"Sheeeit," Dalton whistles, "He went right in to the dam."

Twenty two miles out, there is a fifteen year old boy realizing the power of friendship in a mech that is fifteen stories tall. He has touched bottom in the ocean of despair, and realized that his self pity only harms those that care for him- that rather than reject the feelings of those that love him, he should become a man worthy of those feelings. Tears are flowing from his eyes as he sends a ten ton fist of steel and burning passion in to the eye of the mysterious invader known only as CODENAME: TENGU. His Rapid Reaction Guardian Class DUELIST has lost an arm, its reactor is spent, and its been torn in thirty different places by the massive alien invader. Cables and wires twenty meters long trail behind him, twitching and sparking, and all science says that what he is doing is impossible. But somehow he fights on, to defend his world. And you got a fine front row seat, on the hill across the city in your engineering LAV from this struggle of titans.

That isn't your concern though. I mean, of course you want the kid to win. Nobody wants huge ass space monsters stomping around. You earnestly hope he manages to set aside his emotional problems. It's just that the kid is bashing TENGU's massive bony skull in to a dam that is holding back water enough to flood the whole city, and- yes, Kowalski from below points at the municipal records, probably enough to cause severe flooding in at least one hundred acres of land. Which you and your team would have to clean up, on top of the giant monster viscera. Viscera? Fine. Flood damage? Now that's a bitch and a half.

From soldier to glorified janitor. And if you get on the horn to tell the kid NOT to bash this thing's head in to the dam? You'll get that bitch XO jumping down your throat about not putting more stress on the kid.

You just really wish Kowalski wouldn't tune in to the kid screaming and shouting to himself on the radio.

LAV Engineering Vehicle - Equipped with dozer, winch, high pressure hose, scouring soap, and a M242 Bushmaster that you've never really ever had a chance to fire. Not really anywhere close to regulation, but no one gives a shit.

Crew:
Commander - You.
Driver - Sgt. Dalton. Way too in to the monster fights part of this. Laid back guy, too tall to fit well in your vehicle, but he can drive you places, and seems to know well enough to keep out of range of any of the massive invaders. Which sadly is more than you can say for some in your line of work. You would hate to see him actually tested in a high stress moment though.

Radio, Coordination, And Most Technical Stuff - Kowalski. Creepy girl. Probably a fan of the mech pilots. Pale haired, but hard working. Doesn't do social stuff, which is fine by you.

Ecological Impact Officer - Ambrose. Nobody likes him, because he's the one that makes you hose down EVERY building, and check EVERY corner for EVERY last scrap of invader to get marked down for future pick up by the labs. Dick. He's in the back of the LAV, curled up by a welder, sniveling and looking through a rulebook.

You've all also got the usual jokes for gear- M9 Beretta, clean suit with respirator, and radio. Which doesn't really mean anything, but what can you do?

"That dam's gonna break," Dalton doesn't sound upset. He seems kind of pumped up almost. Moron.

"That dam breaking will flood the city, and a great deal of the surrounding area," Ambrose butts in, needlessly, "Somebody needs to tell the boy to stop."

The radio screams. The boy is screaming/crying about his brother over it. Kowalski wipes a tear from her eye, then goes back to her laptop, tapping away coordination with HQ. Ambrose coughs.

"Somebody REALLY SHOULD tell the boy to stop?"

Of course. You're the commander. You should do it. And further piss off the wonder team and their handlers. Just what you need.

You give a look at Ambrose. He gives a mealy shrug. Dick. Not even military- though, you guess none of you are technically military now, being deployed to UN support services.

"Kowalski, get me HQ."
"Yes sir," She crisply says, tapping at the radio, before handing it over. You nod appreciatively, then haul out of the LAV, and put up your binoculars to take a look at the battle. Dalton has the fancy optics down below, but at least you get to stand up straight through the hatch.

"HQ, this is Charlie Niner."
"Charlie Niner," Ugh, great. Ramirez. Chipper girl with a mommy complex a mile wide, "This is HQ, what's up?"
"Yeah, HQ," You put up your binoculars, and wince. That thing's head is a crater sending green goop flying everywhere, and the kid is STILL wailing on it, "Are you guys seeing this? You have to be seeing this," They narrate every fucking thing like they're god damn telemundo football announcers watching the world cup, "And you know what's gonna happen when the dam breaks."
"Ted-cha- that is to say, Specialist Theodore is having a very stressful time right now, Charlie Niner, and is doing his best! Handler Natasha is already trying her best to reach him!"
"Don't you guys have, like, safety overrides or some shit, I mean," You glance through the binoculars. TENGU fires a laser blast uselessly in to mid air, and the kid lifts the creature bodily in to the air- for a moment, you feel relief, before he literally body slams the Invader in to the dam, making a noise like thunder that is loud to your ears even at this distance. You note with some panic that some water is starting to spray through- real credit to whoever designed the thing actually, "You do know there are, like, people in the city, right?"

"Leave him alone! You don't understand, don't understand what it's like to risk your life!"

You did originally sign up to do just that, but you leave that alone for now.
>Keep trying hear.

Ask to speak to the handler.

"Don't understand? I signed up for this, every fucking time you have a battle, me and my team risk their lives and health dealing with the cleanup of whatever alien bacteria and viruses are in that shit. Don't you tell me we don't know what it's like to risk our lives.
"And you're completely ignoring the lives that are going to be lost when that dam breaks. Or are a hundred thousand people acceptable losses compared to telling the pilot to not get them all killed?"

Also, while I'm writing, I'll throw out some example backgrounds. If you guys can come up and agree on something better, I'll take that. Also, whenever you feel like it, offer custom choices. Word limits is the only reason I don't offer that explicitly in every post.

You are:
>Male

You became an officer by:
>Managed to score well in the academy. Have good leadership skills, and know military theory.
>Jumped in from college. Technical knowledge learned from university.

Male.
Went into the military engineering corps straight out of college back during peacetime. Earned our NCO stripes during the initial Invasion. Went through accelerated officer training at the Academy on recommendation of our CO.
We're considered close to a mustang by older officers who had a full Academy education, but we've got enough leadership and theory to get by; no connections from the Academy, though.

We've had a bit of combat and killing by working through crisis zones that were overrun with bandits after the attacks.

How old are we, though? This would probably put us in our late 20's or early 30's.

"Don't understand? Ramirez, we are out in the field just the same as him, risking our lives to clean that shit up so we don't have a repeat of Atlanta. There's a lot more on the line than just Specialist Theodore here, and that includes all the people in this damn city."
"Y-You don't understand," And she starts blubbering. Shit, there you go again. You've got a big fucking mouth. Gotta focus, you see that the kid is kicking the TENGU full on in the chest now.
"Okay, look, just let me speak to Natasha, please?"
"...Fine," At least she stopped crying. She sounded venomous though, and strangely pleased? But then there's a crackle, and you hear Handler Natasha's screaming.
"GO! THEODORE! VENGEANCE FOR ALL THAT HAS BEEN DONE! VENGEANCE FOR MARSEILLE! FOR CARTER! FOR ALL THAT HAVE FALLEN TO INVADER DEPREDATIONS! LET FURY BE THE BALM TO YOUR SORROW, THEIR BLOOD BE WATER TO WASH AWAY REGRET, THEIR PAIN YOUR GREATEST HAPPINESS!"

You knew Handler Natasha had a rather traumatic past. Actually being at the Joburg Incident would have stressed anyone. But up until now, you had trusted that command had seen a good reason in employing her. To be sure, you had heard much of the bond she had formed with Theodore and the rest of the pilots. But her fervent tirade makes you wonder if she got over that incident.

"Uh, Handler Natasha, this is Charlie Niner, I-"
"What? Who is this fuck?" Rather more distantly, "Ramirez, what have I fucking told you about interrupting me while I compose my pilots? Who in HELL is this?"

This is a total crock of shit. Where the fuck did the UN find these people?

"Ma'am? Have you noticed somewhere in this that Specialist Theodore is hitting the fucking DAM? That contains easily enough water to drown every last living soul in the city- along with, by the way, the secret base under it? Get your god damn head out of your ass, and get a grip, on both you and the kid there, before you do the Invader's job for him!"
"Dam?" A squeak of an abused office chair, "Hm. Did not realize. One moment," She sounds almost calm, before she starts screaming again, "THEODORE!" Some kind of scream of recognition from the kid, "Stop beating the damn thing, and listen! The core is the key! The core! Pierce the core!" Some kind of mangled scream that might have been a question, "IMPROVISE! You wish to avenge, yes? Then do so! DRAG IT TO THE CELL TOWER, AND IMPALE IT!"

You drop your head on to the top of the LAV. Technically, not as bad. But there were going to be a lot of very upset people very soon. At least the networks would probably be overloaded already with everyone trying to post a stream to megainvaderfight or greenbloodgood. How they managed to justify this budget versus conventional forces, you could never understand.

Specialist Theodore screams some sort of mangled noise and then you see his Duelist get a grip on the mash of Invader, dragging it up, and off of the dam- to your consternation, you see some trickles of water dribbling out of the dam- no flood yet, but you'd have to get there ASAP. The kid's Duelist hauls the creature behind him, dragging through town, it ineffectually clawing at the mass of steel and plate. Heading for a tower.

>Call for repair crews on the dam ASAP while you decontaminate the areas you can reach.

"Thanks, though, did you really have to have him use a cell tower? Those are expensive," You clamber back down in to the body of the LAV, and tap at Sergeant Dalton, and point for the dam. Dalton stares bug eyed at you, "You have those fancy knives for this shit, don't you?"
"You have to understand pilot," Natasha replies, "Theodore, he bears a great fury in his heart- has a need to vent it. Merely using a knife wouldn't be enough."
"Right, well, whatever you say, I have a flood to prevent."
"Of course. And Charlie Niner?" Her voice sounds cheery, "Speak to me in such an insubordinate manner again, and I will personally see to it that you are put in to Hell from which there is no escape. HQ out."
"Ma'am," You murmur. She DOES outrank you, you suppose. You switch to the Engineering band, "All units, this is Charlie Niner, get to the dam, I repeat, get to the dam."
"That's a combat zone! You're crazy, I don't wanna go out like Pinkerton!"
"It's this or drown boys, and you're in the base still, right? You can come out opposite side of the Duelist."
"It'll take ten minutes to deploy, but we'll get there."
"You got five, or you best get gills. Charlie Niner out."

You slam down the radio. Kowalski looks up with a vague amount of annoyance, before going back to tapping at her laptop. Dalton, you notice, still hasn't got you rolling down the hill.

"Dalton, talk to me, why aren't we fucking moving."
"Have you not noticed the fact that THEODORE is out there, ready to do serious violence in a death machine the size of a skyscraper?"
"I noticed, but that dam isn't going to last much longer, Sergeant, and I am in command here, right?"
"Fine, sir," Dalton sounds irritated, shakes his head, "How you want it? Quickest would be straight through," He's joking, but he has a point, "If you're NOT suicidal though, I can try going full speed through the cratered town. Also, might pick up some of that Invader crap on us."

You nod, "Okay, Dalton, you have a good point."

Dalton looks relieved. It's important to treasure these opportunities.

"The quickest path is a straight line. Go on through."

Dalton seizes up, his eyes bug out, and he looks back at you, wide eyed, "Th-th-through sir? You mean, just-" He raises a shaking finger, and points, "DIRECTLY in to the path of Specialist Theodore the Magic Murder Kid and his latest punching bag that bleeds fucking DISEASE?"
"Actually," Kowalski's voice is muffled by the respirator she's fitting over her face, "No known transmission of the disease from Invader's has occurred, the reaction in humans is allergic, although it-"
"Techniciain? You're rambling again. Sergeant? You have a hearing problem?" You lean in to Dalton's sweating face, and point, "Straight. Through."

"Ye-yes sir," Dalton turns, puts his hand on the throttle, shakes his head, "Funny that I thought that driving in engineering would be EASY."

Your LAV roars to life, and surges down the hill, smashing through the thicket. You notice Ambrose is looking pretty green around the gills and worried himself, having a death grip on the bars to keep himself up right. Kowalski has one hand keeping her laptop steady, while the other hand types away. Dalton stares ahead, pushing the throttle as hard as he can, making for the dam.

Directly ahead of you, a massive monster of metal walks, dragging a bleeding alien beast across the countryside, dripping green.

I say when we get there, we make Ambrose do decon while we handle spot welds.
"You know Ambrose, YOU'RE RIGHT. We DO have to take every precaution against contamination. That's why you're going to work that hose and decon every square centimeter of this 10 by 10 by 10 meter cube as required by Section 4, Chapter 3."
>>
Your LAV clears the hill, for a moment suspended in midair, before slamming down in to the grass with a teeth rattling jolt. Dalton pushes forward, his eyes like a maniac playing chicken with a train, pushing dead ahead towards Specialist Theodore, his bleeding monstrosity, and the dam beyond them.

You glance down to Dalton, then back to the Duelist and the Invader. Then back to Dalton.

Fuck, he was taking you entirely literally. You open your mouth to say something, before the LAV bounces off of a rock, sending your head in to the ceiling of the LAV, and back down. Bit your tongue. Great. You glance up, and holy crap those things were big close up, and oh god Theodore noticed you. You see the massive metal thing's head turn to regard you as your LAV bullied forward. Dalton is cackling now. TENGU twists, green and awful in the Duelist's grip, green blood spraying from between the massive steel fingers. Dalton doesn't care. Keeps going forward. You're about to say something when another jolt occurs, and the LAV is flying again, this time sent in to the air by the Invader's frantic thrashing, wheels gripping in blood muddied Earth, sending a spray up on either side of the LAV. You pass under the shadow of the Duelist, and see a claw of TENGU's land behind you, just a bit slower, and that thing would have crushed you like a soda can. Another spray of dirt, another shaking judder of the LAV, a momentary fishtail, before Dalton evens it out, and then you're back on solid roads, speeding on cracked pavement for the dam.

Dalton is laughing, hollering, screaming in joy. You stand up, rubbing your jaw.
>>
"Did you see that?! Did you fucking SEE THAT?! Hoooooleeeeeee SHIT, I am a motherfucking GOD, I am the hybrid bastard of Evil Knieval and fucking ZEUS!"

"Dalton," It really is actually hard to be mad at him right now, but you really don't want to repeat this episode, "Y'know, when I said straight through," You glance back at the shrinking pair of walking WMDs, "I didn't mean that you had to go directly through them," Dalton stares up, uncomprehending. You raise a hand, shimmy it in an imaginary line, "You could have turned?"

Dalton stares at you blearily, before his eyes widen, and he rethinks what he had just done."Oh. Shit," He swallows hard, his smile withering, "Uh, about what I said earlier, about being the demi god hybrid of-"

"Yeah," You take a seat, "Eyes on the road Dalton. You did good, but next time? Just remember you can go around."

Ambrose looks distinctly green behind the face plate, but, sure enough, he was ready and impeccably professional. Not very good at the nitty gritty though. More of an academic sort. Civvie to the bone. Kowalski has shut her laptop, and has her eyes closed. Whether this is her weird meditation, or her trying not to be sick, you're not sure. She was technically minded, but thankfully with all the machines you have back here, that's not a hindrance. Not much stamina though. She tired quickly, and when she tired, she made mistakes, and didn't want to admit them. Minor mistakes, but a minor mistake on a lab report is very different from a minor mistake on a weld. Dalton is tough, and follows directions easy. Not much brain, but that wasn't a problem so long as you could micromanage him.

"Thank you Kowalski, yes, a carabiner."

"You're not a trained welder either Ambrose, don't worry about it. Just make a start on the east side, Dalton'll drop you off, and you can clear it for the next wave, got it?"
Ambrose looks stricken for a moment behind plate and mask, before sighing, "Yes, yes, you have a point. I do think that I could help though."
"Too bad regulations prevent it. Right, are we all clear then?" A chorus of yessirs, "Okay," You nod. Four people. One massive dam, with significant damage. All you needed was to keep it alive for just a bit longer, so the heavies could come in and help, "Let's do this."

I don't WANT us to steal the "main characters'" thunder. Let us be the grey eminence, the people doing all the work behind the scenes, let's not get involved with the main plot or overshadow anyone. We're our own fucking protagonist, and we don't need to invade their turf to be awesome.

>>26374842
We can do a little bit of both. Some level of interaction with the "main characters" would be very interesting, if only to show that we're part of a larger world.

For that we need to be higher ranked so that we can't just be pushed around and overruled by the pilots' handler.

Ambrose is dropped off at the side of the dam along with enough industrial detox to sterilize a New York subway station, and the equipment to make a makeshift decon station. The lab techs would appreciate that at least a start was made. For their job.

The combination of NBC suit, even the ones all space age-y and high tech as yours, and welding gear is an awkward combination. Though you made fun of the weird spandex and plate crap that they made the pilots wear, at least it wasn't bulky as shit as the gear you have to tote around in. The climbing harness makes it even worse, but, you didn't really have a choice when it came to this. Even as you step out, you can see the puddles of goo.

It wasn't acidic. It was basic. Awful stuff- some kind of super base previously unknown to science. When first shed, you had to stay way the hell away if you were living- exposure to the skin usually meant crippling, awful, fatal death. Survivors rarely went unscathed. After that though, it got spongy, before eventually turning solid. But it would still emit toxic gases, and hurt to the touch. Usually blended in with whatever it landed on. Bad stuff. Even in Atlanta, you still get dead kids in playgrounds after digging up a chunk of Invader blood. Viscera was the shorthand for it. There's an official name, but you haven't had to say it in quite a long time. CORT didn't seem to stand high on formality these days.

You go down the team, check that they're hammered and hooked in properly. You have about a hundred meters of cable. Should be able to reach all the breaches. God, but you looked ridiculous with all this shit on you. You stop in front of Kowalski, frown. Test her line. Loose carabiner. Shake your head. More used to lab and decon work. You resolve to keep an eye on her, make sure she doesn't make mistakes.

With a few last nods, you rappel down, and get to work. This will take some time.

>I'm rolling for your friends. Gimme 3 1d100, 60 and above for our nameless protag.
>>
>>26374980

Why are we even out in the field in the first place? Shouldn't clean up crews, you know, be deployed AFTER the goddamn monster fight? Like, we sent Ambrose to start decontamination, but what's he going to do if a chunk of monster lands on where he just cleaned up?

I'm trying to find pics of those NBC cleanup crews from Evangelion, because I love the suits. But I can't.
>>
Dalton is a natural pro at this. You see him swing from leak to leak, assessing- patching where possible, and clambering back up and down with plates to weld in with those too difficult. You're actually surprised that he's outpacing you at this.

Kowalski on the other hand...This clearly isn't her strong suit. She nearly drops the welder once, and almost goes flying indiscriminately in to a wall. You and Dalton end up having to do her share of the work as well, and though Kowalski tries to help, you can tell that she's embarassed, and doesn't know what she's doing. You were sure she was welder trained. Though, welding in a workshop, and welding hanging off of a cable in front of a damaged dam, trying to get a grip with NBC equipment surrounded by toxins and poisons is another thing altogether.

Eventually, you employ her as a courier, moving needed supplies back up and down the dam. She remains silent the whole time.

A lot of water, a lot of pressure, and you're still working on seals and patching cracks frantically by the time you hear the welcome noise of chinooks coming in. You spare a glance over to the distance, where you remembered Theodore was. A few swings to glance between the buildings, and yep. TENGU is spitted upon the tower, twisted and broken though it may be, a massive corpse with a stake through its heart.

You remain on to assist the rest of the crews as they work to shore up the dam- the stream it's built on has flooded a bit, and the water level surely has gotten some lakeside property flood insurance used, but the crisis is averted. The city is saved from the flood.

Not that you'd know that by the time you get back up the dam, and hear the radio chatter excitedly about another victory of CORT's brave pilots defeating an invader. I mean, yeah, he beat him. But fuck, did he have to beat him to death against the dam?
>>
You're sweating like a pig in your gear, and after an hour's worth of work, you really don't feel like being a walking sauna anymore. After making sure you're not needed with Colonel Fairbairn, you make for the decon station, giving an appreciative pat to your ELAV on the way out. Girl did good. You shake off the green that coats your glove as you walk along.

Decon is a time honored tradition of impromptu hazing where a bunch of technicians get a chance to vent their sadism on people just trying to do good work. Ah, it was good when you were on the other side of the plastic sheeting.

Hoses and foam work over your suit. Then you remove the suit, hand it to a man who will probably burn it, then sit around, give blood samples, pass the contamination badge, get swept by Geiger counters, walk through an ultraviolet bath, have to answer a battery of security questions, and then finally you're handed a clean set of clothes, and booted off with the rest of the crew in an airtight room to wait for a bus to take you to base.

Safety first. That's the motto. Kowalski isn't here- you're guessing she's moping by the LAV. Probably hoping to sneak her laptop out like she always does. Dalton is in the crowd, and gives you a nervous nod. Ha. He's still scared you're going to fuck him over for the stunt. You can see Ambrose inside the decon station, looking bored, but following the rules to the letter. His fellow techs are looking aggravated. One good thing about Ambrose, he is even handed in being a stickler.

Another glorious day in CORT clean up.

>And that's all I've got so far. I'll need to think up new plot hooks later, and actually figure out where I'm going with this. Just written on a whim. I probably need a name for this guy at any rate. Anyway, sorry for the short stuff here. Thanks for reading!

At least they're safe in a multi-story combat machine; we're working in uncertified hazmat suits made by the lowest bidder, and a single tear can mean a horrible, painful death.

We should probably have the water tested for contamination. TENGU was bleeding a lot into the lake, after all.

Any age you think is reasonable. Not Second Impact occurred fifteen years ago, if that matters. After the Johannesburg incident, there were many infected by the fallout of Invader Viscera, infecting a great deal. A series of brushfire wars were set off after first Johannesburg, then Atlanta brought the horrors of infection to the public eye. Your man might have cut his teeth in these battles to restore public order, to prevent whole sale slaughter of the infected, or to enforce quarantine. He might even have been at the battle of Atlanta, or Johannesburg, or {INSERT CITY HERE}. Valorous action in these battles, or in the peace keeping affairs in the viscera conflicts might have been the reason he made officer.

Viscera has not shown any virulent properties. It seems to be mostly toxic- however, there have been reports of hallucinations, sudden personality shifts, and even mutations reported among victims in Johannesburg and Atlanta.

Like Evangelion, for some reason, the Invaders only choose to attack not-geofront for now after their previous seemingly random aggression. Where not-geofront may be is up to you guys. The world has gone through severe changes after Not Second Impact, so that way I don't have to worry too much about geography.

There is a cult though, that do regard the mutations and the viscera as 'gifts,' and the Invaders as angels of an angry god.

They're mostly ineffectual, but they have lately really liked to cluster around Invader corpses to steal from the bodies, usually with fatal results.

CORT has dictated that any and all matter relating to Invader bodies is under their strict control, and refuse to let anyone else have access to their samples or research.

>>26376167
Nowhere near! There is at least one hill though. So, basically, I'm entirely inaccurate. I'll have to figure out Vienna.

"Lieutenant Kurling?" You had just gotten off the bus and was aiming for the lift to your quarters for some much deserved rest as a reward when a young man looking fresh out of basic in a CORT beret approaches you with a salute.

"Commander Dollfuss would like to see you sir. A personal debriefing," the head of CORT. Never a good sign. Actually, you reflect that this probably will be the first time you'll ever exchange words with the man. The guy usually liked to stay down, way down in the bowels of the GeoFront. Far away from your quarters. At any rate, despite everything, there was no way in Hell you'd be able to get away with pissing off the commander as well as Operations Director Natasha. Oh Hell, maybe that's what this is about.

"Lieutenant Kurling?"
"Yes? Oh, yes, of course I will see him, right away," You mumble, trotting after the young man as he leads the way to the lifts.

The young man is a nice enough sort. Kaplan is his name, and apparently he's an eager fan of the Duelists. He's a bit disappointed that the program is so slow to produce more, but he is glad that the Invaders seem to be focusing their attention on Vienna.

"They're attacking us at our strongest point!" He happily confides. You are surprised about this as well. It's a bit disappointing though, in a way. You were a soldier, a career soldier, but now, you were a glorified janitor. Not the best thing to have in mind when the boss calls you in to a meeting for a Q&A.
>>
You're surprised when Kaplan does not lead you to an office, instead directing you to a hangar. It's vast, if mostly submerged in a strange reddish liquid that frothed orange where it reached wall. You glance over the sides of the railings, wrinkling your nose at the smell. Smelled of mold and rust almost. A disinfectant would make the most sense you suppose. Along the cat walk bisecting the massive room, you see Commander Dollfuss, gray haired and sharp eyed leaning on a railing with his right hand, a cane in his left, seemingly looking eye to eye to the Duelist partially submerged in the red fluid. It's Theodore's Duelist, Unit 2. You're taken aback almost immediately when you note that the armor plating at the shoulder of the missing arm has already been replaced. They worked quick down here.

"Lieutenant Kurling," Commander Dollfuss turns his gaze from the metal monstrosity to look at you, a warm grin spreading on his face, "Glad to see you," He teeters on a cane for a moment, before swinging to get in to closer range, offering a black gloved hand to you. You gingerly accept, feeling awkward in your sweat stained field uniform, "Kaplan, go to Ferdinand, inform him I'll need the helicopter ready by 5, would you?"
"Yes sir!" Kaplan gives a smart salute, then marches off. Eager to please, that one.

"Herr Kurling" Commander Dollfuss seems almost as if he's giving up the ghost, with his pallid complexion, "I understand that there was an...Altercation with Operations Director Natasha today, was there not?"

You internally groan. Oh god damn it, yes, that's what this was about.

We've been under too many commanding officers to be unprofessional. Let's do this by the book.

"Sir. I informed the Operations Director that the fighting between TENGU and Unit 2 would threaten the structural integrity of the dam, which would cause massive flooding in the area. I'm pretty sure you saw it all on your monitors, but I felt the need to remind the Director of the danger to the civilian population and local infrastructure."

"Sir, while I understand that Director Natasha was, and is, supposed to be concerned with the pilots and the tactical picture, the dam was suffering critical damage that would have led to a catastrophic loss of life for no tactical or strategic gain, and would have led to a reduction in our logistical readiness."
>>
>>26376584

>>
>>26376625
>>26376668
Hmm. These two seem the most similar. I'll try to mush them together- calling it for professional recollection of incident. Writing.
>>
To be honest, the way the Director was handling her pilot was a bit hard to believe.
>>
Keep professional. Gotta keep professional. Being unprofessional was what got you in to this mess in the first place. Level. Calm.

"Sir, though I would hesitate to call it an altercation, I will explain what happened. During the course of the encounter between Unit 2 and Invader codenamed TENGU, there was a hazardous amount of damage being inflicted on Kölnbrein Dam. Had things gone unattended, the loss of life and infrastructure would have been catastrophic. I am sure that Operations Director Natasha was aware of the risks from HQ, but I felt it my duty to remind Operations Director Natasha, and by extension, Specialist Theodore of the risks."

Commander Dolfuss nods, placing both hands on his cane, and leaning forward, "And immediately after this call, Specialist Theodore withdrew from the dam, yes?"

"Yes sir."
"As it happens," A shaking, geriatric hand reaches into his pocket, and pulls out a folded piece of paper, "I have a transcript of the radio contact that you made."

Oh dear.

Dolfuss draws some glasses, places them on his noise, and then clears his throat.

"Ma'am. Have you noticed somewhere in this that Specialist Theodore is hitting the fucking dam? That contains easily enough water to drown every last living soul in the city- along with, by the way, the secret base under it? Get your got, got," Dolfuss adjusts his glasses, nods appreciatively, "God damn head out of your ass, and get a grip, on both you, and the kid there, before you do the Invader's job for him."

Dolfuss sniffs, seemingly in offense at having to read such vulgarities, then glances over his spectacles at you.

"Lieutenant Kurling?"

To be fair, what you were originally thinking of saying was WAY worse.

"Sir, I understand the need for discipline, especially going up the chain of command. But the lives of an entire town were at stake, and if the slurs I uttered helped make OPDIR Natasha understand the seriousness of the situation, I stand by my words."

"Hm," Commander Dollfuss taps the head of his cane with a single long finger, "Operations Director Natasha assured me she knew of the danger, and was going to be directing Specialist Theodore away from the dam as it was."

Right.

"Sir, as it was, I had to rush in an patch weld the faults. It will probably take years to repair the damage-"
"Thank you, Lieutenant Kurling," Commander Dollfuss's jowly face shakes slowly, "I understand your concerns, but I wished to be sure that there were no further problems. Natasha was kind enough to explain that tensions were high, and has no complaints regarding your performance, but I do need to be sure that there are no issues. The stability and psychological well being of the pilots is THE most important thing to CORT, and by extension, to the whole of mankind," Commander Dollfuss leans in on his cane, blue eyes glittering, "I do not want to have any strains upon the pilots, understand? When an operation is ongoing, it is the duty of Natasha to make sure the pilots act the way they should. No distractions for them. We don't need to worry about the dam, it was solved," A weak smile, "Understand?"
>>
You note three things. First, Natasha was ranting like a serial killer's schizophrenia, and apparently Commander Dollfuss approves. Second, apparently Natasha wasn't the one that brought complaint against you. Third. Apparently he does not want you talking about the dam incident. Especially to the pilots.

Commander Dollfuss smiles, like a kindly old teacher at a kindergarten, who just managed to get a student to color within the lines.

Dr. Dollfuss's face crinkles up into a grin, and he nods at that, "Very good, Lieutenant. I knew you would understand. You're a good soldier," He waves at you, and then turns to hobble away, "That will be all then. Just follow the red line. That will take you back to your areas."

You really wish you could have said a lot more at that point, but what was the point? This operation was fucked. Admittedly, this dam thing was the nadir of your (short) career with CORT, but the fact that everyone seemed content to just let it slide away, for fear of upsetting someone? Oh well.

You weren't a soldier nowadays. You were a janitor. And probably the only person that gave a damn about collateral damage in this base. You follow the little red line back to the elevator, watched by the lenses of cameras all the while.

As soon as you get back to the level you're cleared for, you're waylaid by Dalton, suddenly coming around the corner in a rush as soon as he saw you. For once, he's in a clean uniform.

"Sir! Uh, hey, I heard you, uh, talked to the big man, and, uh, I was wondering-"
"He's wondering if he's due for cleaning the toilets, seeing as you went to the commander and all," Ambrose comes up, a smile on his face, trying to fit in. Seriously, cleaning the toilets? There are so many more refined and awful things you could do.

Dalton gives a nod. Dalton seems to be under the misapprehension you're mad at him or something. You really are tired, and don't have time for this shit at the moment.

>No one's in trouble. Where's Kowalski?
>No Ambrose, it's about you actually. Don't tell anyone I said this, but...
>No one is in trouble. Actually, just got orders from up high that we're not supposed to mention the dam incident.
>No, fuck off, out of my way, I'm going to bed.

That may be; but taken as a whole, CORT strikes me as a tiny bit more unhinged than NERV. And that's saying a lot.

"No one is in trouble," Ah, your eyes can roll freely now that your job and possibly life are no longer at stake, "Actually I just got orders from up high we're not supposed to mention the dam incident," Both men look at you with surprise, and Dalton opens his mouth to shout a question, when you raise a hand to stop him, "We can discuss it in a bit. Where's Kowalski? She needs to hear this too."

"Kowalski?" Ambrose taps his chin in consideration, "Last I saw, she was heading to the gym with her laptop in tow."
"She took it kinda hard that she was so useless on the welding job," Dalton shrugs, "Not that it's any of my business mind, but I think she had this whole aloof yet confident image going, and fucking up with the welds was real bad for her."
"Well, she's not a welder, she's a laboratory assistant, and is technically skilled-"
"You saying that Lieutenant here shouldn't have taken out on the dam?"

"Enough," You interrupt, feeling a splitting head ache rising, "Gym, right?"
"Yes, sir," they both say simultaneously.

Her laptop in tow. She didn't seem the type, but terrible visions of her updating a blog with details of what happened last mission flash through your head. She didn't SEEM the type. Then again, you also thought she could handle herself on the wall.

>Ambrose, go get her, tell her to meet us at the cafeteria.
>Dalton, go get her, tell her to meet us at the cafeteria.
>I'll go get her, meet us at the cafeteria.
>Let's all just go to the gym, we can talk there.

Quick.

Writing, this'll be my last post for the night I think.
>>
>>26378087

Pfft, blogs. As if all lines of communication out of the Geofront aren't being monitored and censored by CORT.

Incidentially, do we have an AI on the base named CORTANA?
>>
>>26378087
>I'll go get her, meet us at the cafeteria.
We should take care of this personally.
We remember what happened back in Atlanta when somebody leaked the video of some people trying to break quarantine.
>>
"I'll go get her, meet us at the cafeteria, alright?"
"Wait, so, that dam-" Dalton is slow on the uptake.
"Cafeteria, Dalton, I'll tell you when I get there. Keep your mouth shut until I get there, okay? That goes for you too Ambrose."
"Yes sir," Ambrose sighs, in a typically passive aggressive Ambrose way. Civvies.

You march off to the gym. It couldn't be. The Geofront is deep underground. Really freaking deep. She couldn't pick up a signal down here, aside from the Geofront's wifi, which you're pretty sure is all kinds of tapped and monitored. Kowalski wouldn't be that dumb.

The gym is actually fairly reasonably sized, for being part of such a vast and ostentatious facility. A section for changing rooms, showers, lockers, and then the actual floor which has various work out machines. The biggest splurge is a rock wall, one of those ones that goes around on a belt. Maybe all those insurance payouts CORT had to pay out actually did eat in to the budget.

There aren't many people here at the moment. You can see one of your fellow clean up engineers using a jump rope, a security guard doing bench presses, and over in the corner, on a bench, Kowalski tapping away at her laptop.

You cross over to her, and she glances up, frowns, "You don't seem to be here to work out, sir."
"'Fraid not. We're having kind of an impromptu team meeting. Need you at the cafeteria, Dalton and Ambrose are already there."
"I see," She frowns, then nods, "I can be there. I will need to change back to my normal clothes, and wrap this up."

>'Wrap what up?'

"If what you want to wrap up is something about today's exploits, I'm afraid we've been given the clampdown from above. We've been forbidden to speak about the dam incident, and to be on the safe side, I strongly advise you not to talk about today's op at all. Otherwise, see you in ten at the cafeteria," then leave.
>>
>>26378454

Okay, writing.
>>
"Sure, sure, take your time. Just, wanted to mention? Orders from the top, and I do mean the very top- no talking about the dam incident. Really, you should probably not talk about today's op at all," Kowalski looks up, eyebrow raised, "See you in ten at the cafeteria."

You walk away before you can see more of a reaction.

You don't have to wait long in the cafeteria. By the time you've sat down with Ambrose and Dalton, Kowalski is walking through the door, holding on to her laptop bag with a death grip, glancing left and then right, before finding you. She didn't even really change, just threw a big hoody on over her workout clothes.

She joins the three of you at the table, looking thoroughly miserable. You all remain silent, looking at her.

"Well?" She finally lets out.

"Nothing, just wondering if you had anything to say," You really couldn't afford another Atlanta.

"I don't have anything to say, sir," She looks down at the table, to her laptop bag, "I haven't told anyone about it. But..."

She unzips the laptop bag, looking kind of ashamed, "I do take notes. For someone important. I didn't realize that there were rules against it- I never noted anything anybody couldn't find in the news."

She lets out the laptop, and sets it on the table.

"I figured he of all people should know."

>Safety Officer !RKF.iF2YqE
Fuckin' short version on Rebuild.
1.11 is pretty damn fun, basically the first few episodes of the series (up through Ramiel) with better animation resulting from a much higher budget.
2.22 is where things go off the rails. Asuka's different, still fucked up, but fucked up in different ways, most obviously a little less self loathing. There's a new character, a British bint named Mari who steals a lot of screentime that should have been Asuka's. She's interesting, but the fact that her presence detracts from the presence of one of the characters we actually give a fuck about is frustrating. The ending is WEIRD. Zeruel EATS Rei, and Shinji initiates 3rd Impact trying to get her back, but gets stopped when OUT OF NOWHERE IS FUCKING KAWORU WITH A GIANT SPEAR THAT DOESN'T LOOK LIKE THE LANCE OF LONGINUS BUT WHO THE FUCK EVEN KNOWS AT THIS POINT. This seen was the REALLY divisive thing. Some people were all "Fuck yeah, Shinji being badass" others were saying to the first group "Like father like son, he went full Gendo."
Q has PISSED PEOPLE OFF, and I will explain why. Basically, Q is only half of a fucking movie. Originally Q and || were gonna drop on the same day, with the idea being that you'd see one, then go see the other. But that didn't happen. First it was bumped to some time this year. Now it's been changed again to an indefinite release date. So now we have half a movie and a multiple year fucking wait for the second half. As such, the pacing is COMPLETELY fucked, and we get like no screentime for this ASSLOAD of new characters that get introduced in the first fifteen minutes, then abandoned for the rest of the film, and pretty much no info on what happened during the 14 year timeskip (yes, 14 years). || MIGHT save it, but as it stands now, Q is not all that good.

Kiddin' me? Fuckin' everybody loved 2.22. There was one type of fan who didn't like it, and you know who. Picture related.

The idea about Q and || being dropped on the same day is outdated info. Those plans were scrapped before 2.0 was even out. It's just an excuse some people use to make Q seem better than it really is.

It's not half a movie, it's an entire movie showed in it's entirety in the cinema, no additions to the BD, nothing. It's a finished movie.
That's why there is an indefinite release date. It wasn't supposed to come out until later.
>>
>>26382419
...Wait. 2.22 and 2.0 are different?

What the fuck is going on with evangelion.
>>
>>26382978
>2.22 and 2.0 are different?
Only in that 2.22 is the DVD/Blu-Ray release, and has some retouched footage.
>>
>>26383048
...Are there any big differences? That guy in the screencap seemed to think so (maybe?) about that.
>>
>>26383140
He's butthurt because his waifu Asuka got dunked while Rei got saved by MAGICAL RAINBOW SHINJI.
>>
>>26383140
You're misinterpreting it.
Everyone calls it 2.22 now because the home format release is what we all have on our hard drives. But that guy was likely posting during the shitty camrip days, when it was still 2.0.
Also, he's an idiot because
>implying Anno would ever let Rei win

>>
>>26383370
Seriously though, I AM an Asukafag to a degree, but I like to think I'm rational.
I don't hate Rei like some of my counterparts do. In fact I like Rei as a character. A lot. I find her fascinating in her strangeness. I just hold that Asuka is a better match, but more importantly the one that the original work pushes for.
Rebuild is a whole other sack of potatoes, but IF Rei is still a semi-clone made from Yui and Lilith, then it's unlikely that she'll be the winning girl this time, either.

The thing about Touji's Little Sister winning was a joke.
>>
>>26383559
Although I would give her the dick.
Sorry Touji, but your little sister's hot.
And (if my math is right) legal.
Yay, timeskip! Not really. Fuck the timeskip. Fuck it in the ass. With a sandpaper condom. If you're gonna introduce a whole new set of Bridge Bunnies, along with a whole new fucking organization, they need to take the time to EXPLAIN THAT SHIT TO THE AUDIENCE!
>>
>>26383662
>And (if my math is right) legal.
She should be by Japanese laws which is the only thing you'd need to concern yourself with.

>>
>>26383729
The only thing Anno has ever cared about is trolling.
>>
>>26383729

I think the better question is "Can Anno more effectively troll us by changing it, or by making it LOOK like he's gonna change it, then keeping it the same?"

>>

I didn't like the Eva dub so much. Wasn't much to do with the voice acting. Was more translation stuff. It had thing is pseudo translation where people don't actually talk like how they do in the dubs.

Sort of stuff.

Oh, one of those people.
Never mind my comment then.
>>
>>26384818
Generally, the performances were decent. Not great, but overall pretty decent, especially for it's day. But the direction was pretty fucking miserable.
See the needless, cartoonish "blech" added after Shinji and Asuka's (terrible) kiss for an example of the moronic decisions in direction that hamper the dub. She wasn't disgusted, she was upset that he wouldn't kiss her back. The gargling was to throw him off, so she could maintain her pride. This is made quite clear later when, during Asuka's mindrape, we see her in the bathroom afterwards, looking utterly CRUSHED.
>>
>>26385362
That's a pretty awful example. She gagged for the same reason that she washed out her mouth.
>>
>>26385362

Hahahaha, no. You don't break into that kind of business by focusing on artistic integrity or even just a minimal standard of taste.
>>
>>26385362
Don't see how the addition of the "blech" changes her character motivations. That said it's silly that they added it.

Only shippingfags are really pissed off at the last two movies. Not to say the last one was really good, but they hated it the most.

2.22 barely gave any screen time for character development outside of Shinji and pretty much ignored Touji/Kensuke. 3.0 did a retarded timeskip of *fourteen years* with none of the pilots aging, people acting retarded and the issues of 2.22.

>>26384661
You mean part. Can't have them be *too* foreign after all.

>>26384664
Dubs can be okay. Mostly if you watched them when you were a kid, then it can just be weird to watch it subbed years later.

Dubs pretty much have to work with finished animation and dialogue without taking into account the VAs so it always feels a bit awkward.
