/tg/, I own a small FLGS that I run on the weekends. As I'm only running this place as a hobby I don't have much overhead. In fact, my time and getting the business set up is really it. I'm in a building I own, who's utilities are paid by a food service company of mine. Because of this, and my desire to give back to the community, I've only been charging 5% over cost. Lately other store owners and even players have been attacking me saying that I'm not a real store, that I'm hurting the community, and even emailing my suppliers trying to get me cut off.

I can understand my competitors doing this, but why are customers so against low prices?
>>
Most people who frequent a FLGS are friendly with the owner or at least one ranking employee. They tell a story of you screwing them over, the customer buys it and considers you on par with a scalper.

Just how shit works, bro.
>>
>>26253543
I assume some of the customers are loyal to the other shops, and the other shops asked them to complain.

Or, because of your thing, their shops are unable to survive. If you are only open on weekends, I wouldnt be able to go to my FLGS on weekdays because it closed down, and yours isnt an option.

I dunno.
>>
Ah well, I'm not in it for the money anyway. And it's not like I'm selling a lot, just GW stuff. Though I am thinking of expanding to MtG.

Besides, who in their right mind would buy GW stuff at retail? 82.50 for a storm raven is nuts.
>>
>>26253643
Basically, those FLGS are just as small as you, with twice as many bills. They need a friendly community who will come in and spend more than they normally would, ordering, say, over the internet, and so engender a feeling of community with their customers.

Now, personally, I'm wondering how the hell you've managed to do this, as GW usually doesn't let just any FLGS take their wares, nor do they generally repeat business with people who don't charge and pay for their prices. In addition, they generally get to demand what is being stocked and how much you have to stock. So, assuming this is true, it involves at least one count of fraud against GW at the very least. GW is not the friendliest company.

On the other hand, I have never been in a shot entirely supported by GW miniatures aside from GW shops. Most FLGS are supported almost entirely by Magic Cards and less expensive games, at least anywhere within a state or two of where I live in the midwest.

So I dunno, brah, can I buy some GW stuff for 5% above cost?
>>
>>26253643
>>just game works stuff
let those self intitled pricks rot OP.
>>
Well it sounds like you've got a few options.

1.) Start running your game shop full time and really drive people out of business. Become Captain of Industry/Robber Baron (depending on how mad people are at you).
2.) Increase your prices. This is kinda dumb if you're not looking for profit.
3.) Shut it all down. Also dumb, you're not doing it for the other game stores you're doing it to give back to the community.
4.) Keep going as you have been. Fuck 'em, maybe if people can actually afford GW products they'll start actually playing them more.
5.) Start offering 'secret' discounts. Mark everything up to about what your competitors have it, then just start offering massive discounts to people who aren't complete dicks.

I'd recommend options 1 or 5. Awhile back, JC Penny's got a new president that decided he was going to stop screwing over his customer base with "sales", because those sales weren't actually a good deal for the customer. Instead, he said he'd lower prices across the board, and everyone would get to save money. He was going to treat the customer like an intelligent human being capable of doing simple math.
It failed horrifically.

Lesson learned, people would rather FEEL like they're saving money (even if they're not) than actually save money.

Go ask someone who's worked a register in retail for more than a year how often they've gotten someone arguing with them over a sale price, even though the price the cashier is trying to give them is actually lower.

Anyway, If you do that, I'm sure you'll get considerably less complaints.Oh and be sure to offer the discount to anyone who actually figures out what you're doing.
>>
>>26253713
I don't know who told you GW was hard to deal with, they've been kitty cats to me. Kinda poor, dumb, brainless service some times, but not hard to deal with at all. They even gave me some contacts for other companies products. And while they offer the stockist program, I simply didn't join. I can handle my own restocking.

And sure, if you're in the Atlanta area look up StrikeForce Games.
>>
>>26253778
Damn, I'm in California stranded in the middle of an ocean of no game shops.
>>
>>26253778
eBay or Amazon store? Share the low price love...
>>
>>26253790
Really? None at all? Where the hell are you?
>>
>>26253830
Can't, part of my terms with GW. That's how you lose the right to buy from them. Of course, they have no control over how I price stuff in my shop.
>>
>>26253773
I propose option 4 with a twist - become friendly with the other shops, start arranging comps/tournaments with them at their stores for all your customers. Maybe even chip in the gameboards if you're all about FUN!

People flock to those shops, have a great time, buy stuff while they're there and later on shop with them (or you) in preparation of the next event.

Create a network of awesome LGS.

Just never host at your shop.
>>
>>26253846
Literal desert. There used to be a few, but they all shut down. Dunno why, there was always people in there buying.
There's one hobby store that caters to RC stuff and kites, but the owner is a crotchety old man who refuses to stock "any of that nerd crap".

So we nerds have to order just about everything over the internet. That or drive several hours North to the nearest college town. Target does still sell MTG boosters though.

Come to think of it, there aren't even any comic book stores around.

California is depressing. It's like a few cool cities and then a vast mostly-boring waste. Like New York, but bigger.
>>
>>26253878
I've already tried this! But one of the store owners has already warned the others about me, telling them I'm only trying to steal their business. So they are all on edge with me. Besides, I enjoy hosting events at my place as I have a pretty good sized group of Apocalypse players and my store is in the same building as my apartment.
>>
>>26253967
They sound like fgts. Crush them under the iron boot of capitalism.
>>
>>26253967
Fuck 'em, it's a free market - as long as your suppliers keep supplying, do what you like doing.

That said, is there any real likelihood of your suppliers cutting you off?

Store 2 only has to run at cost, seeing as OP apparently has it made.

Of course financially speaking it isn't wise, but it's still a fun idea and not totally implausible. More stores means bulk ordering, which means bulk ordering discounts, not to mention the extra customer base a second location would bring in.

Competitors are upset for obvious reasons.

Customers may be upset because they perceive it as an attack on their regular FLGSs. Or because the other FLGS (with whom they have a relationship*) are upset.

You say you run on weekends. Do you host tournaments/have gaming space? If not it could be seen as trading a playing environment for cheap models.

So hold on a second. Your competitors are mad that you sell GW products and only GW products for far cheaper than they do. They got so mad over this that someone decided to email your suppliers telling them to stop supplying you? That's really fucked up. That's 1920s era capitalism, not the shit you'd expect fucking hobby game stores to be engage in.

I hope OP stays in business with the gaming, though I live nowhere near Atlanta.
>>

Phone/Email Orders are fine, it's the online shopping cart that you can't break or they shut you down.

Do you sell just GW products? What about Privateer Press?

>Not putting effort into this

Then you have no business complaining that your competitors are trying to get your supply chain broken and turning you into a bad guy.

Man up and bury them.

For the community.
>>
>>26254332

Is that forum hidden normally or something?
>>
By the way, OP, you're sole owner of that food services place, etc. etc. right? Just asking because you sound like a pretty cool dude and I wouldn't want you to get slammed for an utter failure of corporate governance.
>>
>>26254283
>fucked up railroad tycoonery

Having worked for a few small businesses, this is kinda par for the course. GW can't do anything about OP, tough as long as he is following their policies to the letter... except change their policies and that takes a while. It would also hurt all the other retailers who don't have his razor thin margins, so unless they are legitimately trying to kill off non-GW distribution channels that's unlikely. But until something changes (price hike or shutdown) the local competitors will likely remain pissed off and cry foul to anyone who will listen.

In my experience the one that will fold eventually is the guy with no overhead because his situation is more likely to change than the other guys. And as OP said, this is kind of just a hobby anyway.

$0.02 - YMMV
>>
>>26254283
People were cutthroat in the 1920's not retarded. They have no real argument to stop getting him supplied. In the 1920's they would pool together and buy him out then establishing a trust that could monitor all the prices in that particular town, while being careful to brutally crushing any possible newcomers.

OP my suggestion to you is that you keep doing what you're doing and try to develop a community, don't get dirty, don't get underhanded, just keep sellin' what you sell and make it an inviting friendly atmosphere and people will come. If you try and dick out the other companies like others said it will just give them another opportunity to "attack" you to their customers. Do what you can to build your own local customer base and let that spread. In a city as big as Atlanta there should be a large enough market for you and if other shops are mad that they are getting outbeat on the buisness end they will just have to deal with it.

tl;dr keep on doin' what you're doing, maybe open up for more days of the week, host events grow your own cutsomerbase, don't be a dick to competitors

I remember you. Good to see you up and running.

The other owners see it as you trying to undercut them. The community should appreciate having another option, but I'm betting most of those people have been hearing about this new under-cutting asshole from the store owners who have to pay things like rent and employees so their perspective is biased from the start.

Not fair to you, but that's what they would feel.

If the other LGS owners are nice, I would try and reason with them since you will presumably be sharing a clientele.

If they're assholes, then you have the ability to squish them if you so please.
>>
>>26255882

I see. You may consider hiring some people, that is what one guy did here. He is the "sugar daddy" for the FLGS, and it runs basically only just to break even and he dosn't pay himself, but uses it just to pay staff and keep it open. It's an AMAZING store, with the friendliest and best people already. At a drop of a hat the staff will stop what they are doing to play a sample game of whatever you like, give painting tips, and just generally be friendly.

It's not the biggest or the best stocked store, but people are flocking there in my area in droves simply because they have the best service bar none. Because the objective really isn't to sell you shit, it is for everybody to have a good time.

I try to buy everything I can from them that they stock or will special order for me. Other game stores here hate them, and that sounds a lot like your situation.
>>
>>26255975
Don't be in a rush to hire anyone.
>>
>>26255965
Also what probably does them no favors is the recurring trend of shoddy employees I notice in game shops and comic shops. Having run a restaurant for a few years now (and managed prior), the average game store seems riddled with incompetent, foot-dragging employees often comprising the owner and some of his friends. Even the nice ones tend to be comparatively poor business-people and exhibit poor managerial habits/practice since the targeted niche market seems to allow it.
>>
>>26256058
But if the market allowed it wouldn't those places not always inevitably shut down?
>>
>>26256050
I'm in no hurry, perhaps, if a year or two goes by and business pics up, then I could. I'll also have to see what happens when I begin to carry MtG cards. No rush to put my boot on the other stores' necks.
>>
>>26256108
In a lot of areas, even densely populated urban areas, there isn't a lot of competition for a game store. They might well be the only place to buy miniatures, or still he cheaper/more convenient than internet orders (after shipping). Or they could simply be the only place with tables.

Sure they'd go under the moment a good alternative exists but for something that targets .only a small demographic, there is often not that market.
>>
>>26253543
Wow that guy who posted the thread is retarded, he didn't black out names or anything. Time to go harass David T Flinn!

Well, yeah. You are in a good position to wait to find the right person. Which is what my local FLGS did. It's a great place to play and is revitalizing the hobby around here. People are falling over themselves wanting to work there because of the culture and the direction the store is.

So yeah, not all employees are terrible and it can be done. I know for one if it was me? I'd be super excited to be able to get other people into the hobby I loved.

Also, what people are saying here is right. Don't hire friends.
>>

>>
>>26256180
That's more or less the problem. In my city six/seven years ago there used to be a really bro-tier store that was built into what used to be a café. Not a huge place, but plenty of table room most days and only a bit cramped during store event. The owner was chill and would let people bring in pizza from next door, or keep the store open after-hours so the Serenity players could finish their session. I only ever saw him get mad once, when some kid took a real nasty shit in the store toilet and left it for someone else to clean up. Store had to close when the roof started collapsing in over the entrance. The owner had to move to a shop only slightly bigger than a stall in the city centre, which was too expensive to run and eventually disappeared. After that the Magic players began meeting at a bar in this upstairs room, usually reserved for birthday parties and the like. The patrons visibly hated us and the staff wouldn't even serve sodas without ID, meaning the under 18's couldn't buy anything to drink, but there was nowhere else to meet up.

Capitalism, If they don't want to outdo your business model either on cost of goods or quality of service then they are fucked.
>>
This store rings a bell for me. How long have you been open? I think a cousin of mine may have visited and bought some miniatures one time.
>>
Just added you from SC, might make trip out there one weekend. Not much into 40k (because no one to play with out here), but mitebcool to buy some stuff.
>>
>>26256998
Since around January of this year.
>>
I wasn't going to feel bad for the other guys since OP sounds like an awesome dude but the other stores are struggling to stay open and are offering 10% discount, so I kind of have sympathy for them. My FLGS is 100% MSRP and my state has like 11% tax.

I would hang out and buy shit at OP's store though. Sell drinks and food because you can make mad profit off those and being able to grab a bite to eat or have something to drink at the store is really convenient. Hopefully your customer base is mature and considerate enough not to be pigs and keep the place clean.
>>
>>26254568

So, OP, where do i find your phone number if I want to by from you? Also what are your hours, I'm a time zone or two away so I want to know when to call.
>>
>>26257687

Either he didn't know that, or he might have meant if OP places orders with FW for his customers, since some FLGS and GW stores do that and you can just pick it up.

No idea why you wouldn't just have it sent to your house though.
>>
>>26257736

>Guy running store as a hobby runs businesses into the round with unfair pricing
>Hobby Store guy later gets bored and stops running said store, he doesn't need to after all, it's not like the store is his livelihood
yeah, this is a great thing we're supporting.

Getting GW for significant discount is fine and all in te short term, bit I can see it being harmful to OP's gaming community long term. It's better to have store owners who want to maintain a lasting business, not just some bored hobbyist who won't give 100% to the business.

Just my two cents. I'll let you all attack me as being anti-fun or whatever as you choose, after all short term benefits outweigh long term survibability of the local gaming community.
>>
>That guerrilla marketing scheme.
Dohoho. Very clever OP. Now more people know about you underselling the local scene and will turn to you instead of going to their old FLGS.

Very fucking sly. I'm impressed. Viral marketing could take a page from your book.
>>
>>26257998
He did say he had more table space than the rest of the local stores and that he was running apocalypse and several campaigns. So it's not like he's ignoring the community aspect.

>>
>>26258089
In the same way that "trolling" is.
>>
>>26258124
I believe they've become direct items, but I think all the stores are waiting on a restock.
>>
>>26258067
You miss my point superbly.

Let's move things forward to two years from now. OP's store is the only store in town, the others are out of business now because they couldn't possibly compete with his prices AND stay in Business.

OP is suddenly struck by anything from financial calamity to a bus, and now can't or won't run his store. Maybe, he just gets bored and quits the weekend only store because he's no longer having fun. Because he can afford to do that when other store owners couldn't.

What then?

See? Short term benefit overlooking long term survibability. This isn't even a worst case scenario, it's just pretty likely based on what we already know. And long term it's bad for his local gaming community.
>>
>>26258167

How come you can get 50% from GW? I thought only certain distributors can get it that low.
>>
>>26258190
But. I'll also have bought alot of really cool stuff cheaply. Which is good.
>>
>>26258190
I'm deeply disturbed by these gaming stores that seem to get a LARGE enough percentage of their profits from miniatures to go down from just losing sales on that front.

The local stores loosing business should've just asked him to not carry their flagship products (Whgich, if they are doing things right, are cardgames and not overpriced minis)
>>
>>26258210
I don't, I get 45% off. As do all stores, as far as I know.
>>
>>26258259

Man, why do GW and stores sell 100% then? Just make everything 45%.
>>
>>26258242
Well, you're pretty selfish and short sighted. It's all well and good having those toys, but if the stores no longer exist to host the games in, you've just got a shelf full of useless plastic.

But I guess if you're cool with that, whatever.
>>
>>26258296
It's called "making a profit'
>>
>>26258250
Then you underestimate how much of a money maker 10% or even 20% off GW retail price is.

And vastly overestimate how much gaming stores make on cards.
>>
>>26258309

GW gets no profit because they sell to stores for 45%.
>>
>>26258303
I am pretty selfish aren't I? I should go re-examine my life. Sorry OP I can't buy from your store. I'm off for a life of self reflection as a monk! Monks don't play Warhammer y'know?
>>
>>26258352
45% of RRP does NOT mean GW is making no profit on the sale.
It means they make LESS.
>>
>>26258352
They get them cheap enough that they can sell them for 45% of full retail and make a profit. Then, they sell for full retail at their own online store so they don't compete with the stores reselling their products.
>>
>>26258362
You should at the very least learn to examine the big picture rather than just short term gratification, yes.
No amount of childishness and sarcasm will alter that.
>>
>>26258366

Exactly. GW can survive if they only sold at 45% right now since most people don't buy direct from GW. Well maybe a lot of kids do at the stores or something, but most of us don't.

The guy I was responding to implied that GW wouldn't make any profit if they sold to US at 45%. But they're selling to the people we're buying from at 45% RIGHT NOW ANYWAYS. So just cut out the middleman and pass the savings to us. All that profit was going to the middlemen and not GW anyways.
>>
>> 26253543

>>
>>26258410
>most people don't buy direct from GW
>they're selling to the people we're buying from
It's not wise to stop selling to the people who buy the bulk of their product in favor of selling to a minority of their customer base.
>>
>>26258417
That doesn't seem plausible, but ok sure. Multiple stores in your area survive and got run each other put of business selling only three product lines.
Ok.
It's not like people go on the internet and just lie I suppose...

You, good sir, are fucking awesome. If I wasn't three states away I'd buy stuff from you.
>>
>>26258961
i dont even play warhammer, but as far as base capitalism goes, you are doing well. local game stores, at least where i live, get most of their profit from TCG's, so mini's shouldnt overly affect their bottom line. this is pathetic strongarming from your competition. if they refuse to speak to you reasonably, just keep going. if they do speak to you, give them your side, listen to their demands, make an informed decision. if, as the doomsayer says, you drive everyone else out of business, and then quit, either someone else buys the store or sets up a new one. where there is a demand, there will be supply.
>>
>>26258961

>>

One day I hope to own my own drive-thru bottle-o and poker house.
>>
>>26258415
Fuck off Gus
>>
>>26253543
>why are customers so against low prices?
Because a robust market is one that's competitive. Lets say you keep your prices low and put everyone else out of business. This is admittedly a hobby for you and you close up some day. Now the town is left with a void that no one else can fill because the consumer expects a pricepoint that no non-subsidized business can offer them. Your town is now game store-less. Good job.

PRO-TIP: 5% less than your opposition's prices is competitive but not community-destroyingly so.
>>
>>26260156
I don't get that one.
>>
>>26260217
>if you buy things for cheap YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG

Says someone who has never taken an economics course defending someone who isn't even in this for the money. Capitalism has as much to do with this discussion as my beer does.
>>
>>26253543
OP, you seem to be a decent guy. You've got the product your people want at a price they want. The ones against you owe fealty to another guy, they're too hooked on one cock to see yours is better.

Also nice to see you come here for help. You seem to know what you're doing, and if you had to you could probably take down your competitors.

My advice, try to be friends with the others and get a feel for who is trying to fuck you over. Or expand your influence, dip into other product lines (not too deeply unless demanded) and then let the natural order take its course.
>>
>>26258190

It'd probably be too slow a supply line, and lacking in packaging. Your best bet would be buying from chinaman and moving it on ebay for a profit as 'used'. Even then, probably not fantastic margins.
>>
I would too like to buy via phone or email, there is no FLGS that carries 40k besides a GW store, and fuck that.

Not OP, but this isn't that hard to do.

You just have to have a business license. You can then contact and have the stuff sent directly to you.

Buddy of mine does that. He runs a completely unrelated business. He uses that address/license to work with wholesalers (all games). Gets stuff anyplace from 45-55% off.

Not just GW, talking just about everything.
