Going to try my hand at a civ, only one civ at a time.
All characters that started the civ are in the game (so pick a name)
after two turns of play new players are added to it.
4 actions per turn, how actions are decided are based on your government (up to you guys)

I'm cool with pretty much every civ.
>>
insects for the hive!
>>
Insects. Mountain cliff face hive, starts with short distance flight and jaws designed for burrowing through hard rock.

Also, delicious honey mutation.

>>
>>26243729
There should probably be a list for random mutations.

DM could make a short list of 20 mutations, number them 1 through 20, and whenever a random mutation is needed he rolls the dice and selects one. Each used mutation is replaced with a new one.

There should be a mix of good and bad mutations. For example, delicious honey. Insects don't care what they eat, but humans do, which makes our honey a prize worth raiding our nests for.
>>
>>26243714
the roll rule is for later mutations

Anyone wanna play the queen? I don't really want to but maybe there's someone else.
>>
Rather than deciding government type (it's obviously going to be a eusocial caste system), maybe we should decide how our species reproduces.

Sure, there's the option of a single egg laying queen, but that puts all of your eggs in one basket and may lead to you creating new rival colonies with their own queen.

Or there could be an egg laying caste, which produce the command caste and all the rest. The problem with that is that egg layers are fat and nearly immobile and are thus juicy targets. Also, they have high food demands.

Or, any member of the hive can breed and we just work together for the good of the all.

We are the queen. That's the PC.

So far:
Civ: Incects

Gov: Theocratic monarchy

Location: 1 vote swamp, 1 vote mountain cliff,

Mutations: (have 2 to pick)

Breading: Options mentioned, Queen lays the eggs, a caste made to just lay eggs, everybody can lay eggs
>>
>>26244153
I suppose that would be one solution to the problem. But the idea behind civ quests is that we start off in a fairly ad hoc position and consolidate our position as time goes on. Eliminate the weaknesses of our civ through technology/culture (or, in the case of insects, mutation).

But to avoid the good Mr. Orkwood thinking that my suggestions are overly agressive, let's just go for the basic queen setup. With your plan to create a special control caste as a long term plan, of course.

I'd rather get the game started. All this discussion is no doubt overcomplicating the game.
>>
>>26244253
I support the classic one queen idea. Also I would like for one of our mutations to be camourflage as we start out fairly weak and it will give us the chance to avoid confrontation and spy on other people.
>>
>>26244256
Agreed. Start basic Queen, maybe evolve down the road.
Mountain cliff.
Two mutations, stronger jaws to dig deeper? Climbing is a must if we're on a mountain.

>>
>>26244253

I support the cliff for location.

Mutations should be something that help dig into the cliffs and some kind of arolia to make scaling up the sides of mountains quick and easy for wingless brethren.
>>
Sounds like cliff wins, in that case let's go with strong mandibles for mining (and crushing), and hooks for climbing (and nasty finishers.

Can we have strong winds and snow in adition to the cliff? In that case flying stuff wouldn't be able to get to us so easily and they'd have to fight us under optimal conditions for ourselves.

>Civ: Incects

>Gov: Theocratic monarchy

>Location: Cliff face,

>Mutations: Has wings. one more to pick, votes are 1 strong jaws, 1 climbing 1 camo, 1 acid

>Breading: Queen lays the eggs
>>
I've already voted way back here >>26243585 , but I think burrowing and arolia are the best starting mutations.

However, I kind envisioned our hive to be more like a paper wasp nest. That kind of complex construction should be a mutation, but we'd have to come to a vote on whether we should evolve in that direction.

Simply put: should our eventual hive design be more like ants (underground tunnels) or paper wasps? I suppose we could do both... but learning how to build our hive like that would use up a mutation, which could be considered a waste. I think we should get some kind of consensus on our direction.
>>
>>26244404
i support cliffs as well

i rather like the idea of an egg laying caste or at very least a "queen" thats waiting to be germinated and made into a queen.

Also the priority should be to create a proper room for the queen to rest and any food needs to be brought there to feed her first and foremost. Long live the queen.

When the queen is safe the castes can be dealt with.
>>
>>26245050
I concur, but I believe we need to get a little further down to fight against the cold. Especially if a storm hits, the further down we are the better.
>>
>>26245020
Seconding this plan, though the cliff faces might be a bit tough we should be able to find a weak spot.

And for the direction we should scout, let's do south for now.

DEEPER.

Have 30 of ours form a working caste, to burrow into the rock
10 as a warrior caste, to scout the area and warn of potential threats
10 as our holy queen's personal attendants/slaves/guards/courtjesters
>>
>>26245196
Now is not the time to waste our manpower on the queen. I think we should have one attendant to the queen that keeps her clean and guarded, as well as relaying orders to the rest of the colony.

about the same height slightly bigger thorax, but small at the moment.
Castes form naturally, with the exception of the queens attendants which were hand picked.
The hunters find that they can catch some elk if they dig holes for them to run into (gained hole trap)
The queen begins to lay eggs, putting extra effort (happens on auto but using an action increases substantially)
The workers go deeper, the tunnals now easily fit every one.

Shiny things are beautiful. Our Queen is beautiful. Logic dictates that the shiny things must go to our Queen.

Have some available workers bring the shiny things to the queen's chamber as tribute to her greatness, provided they don't pose any danger.

SpiderBro and Jimmy Bob decided to mine the shiny, but for a peculiar reason keep it within the tunnels. It is immediately taken to the queen and piled around her, softer than the hard rock the queen is even more comfortable.
The eggs kept warm, to help prevent freazing.
Some of the hunters fell into the water at a small point in the water, forcing the water to go around them and making it so some of the fish got stuck onto the land.

No new events? Well then, continue to breed scout and hunt, try to find ot where the shiny things came from.

>>
>>26247150
Agreed. But since we used up a mutation (and will only appear in our new larva), we should have some of the workers fight for our amusement. That will be the beginnings of the warrior caste, since there is no known outside threat.

And, OP, I'd suggest you start peppering in some events at this point. Not necessarily first contact, but some problems we can respond to.
>>
>>26247174
A giant metorite...

ok i'll think of something
>>
>>26247174
>some problems we can respond to.

I like that idea.

How often do we get babby bugs?
>>
>>26247201
Just basic things. A rockslide. Some workers getting lazy. Attack by wolves or large birds.
It's so we don't do hunt, lay eggs, dig, explore every turn.
>>
>>26247223
about every 4 turns

The Hunters can now reach birds next allowing them to pick eggs on the hunt, they also can drop on dear.

following the river the scouts noticed some paths kind of like the one animals make, but more worn. There is a faint kind of rumble they here as they get closer, but only during the day. They also find a bitter berry, doesn't seem to set well with them(6 workers sick).

>>
>>26247371
This. Can our hardened hunters quell this uprising?
>>
>>26247322
The queen tells Khanon, a hunter, to take some of the new bugs and a couple hunters to go and break up the fight. About ten go out and help break up the fight, their organzation making them easily able to stop it.

The scouts wait till night to go further. Later they get closer to the sound and see trees stripped of their branches and lined up closely togather. Lights seem to shine from the line of trees, small figures walk holding smaller lights.
The hunters try to grab the birds, but for the same reason rabbits still escape them, they just can't get them fast enough.
More berrys are gathered, very few make being eaten by unaware bugs. (7 more sick, but a few have gotten better)

Lets check out that settlement, take a couple of scouts, but make sure they dont get spotted.

If we do get spotted go full submissive dog behavior, they dont have to know we are smart killers.
>>
>>26247539
>lights seem to shine from the trees

Something's in our territory. Let's put an elk skull onto a stake and put into the middle of these trails the figures walk on. Cover the skull with scent as well, maybe that will convince them to go away.

Also, stop eating those damn berries.
>>
>>26247591
But they are so delicious! (Actually we are discovering alcohol)

I like the deerhead idea, lets do that.

No more berries. We carnivore now.

We should get camourflage next time, we could fly from tree to tree and stick on it too. If we were to do so at night we would be Ninja bugs.
>>

Would we be able to be close enough to check it out while being unidentified?

I dunno. If they're dumb cavemen-era people, they might think us fucking scary and worthy of worship.

It's why we need giant stingers.
>>
>>26247640
Yeah, it's a good idea to remember how retarded we are at diplomacy. Humans will try to kill us on sight if we approach them due to our appearance and we have no means of speaking to one another. For the moment, we leave various signs, bribes, and threats to tell them to keep their distance. They probably won't, but it's better than trying to say hi.

And this might be me being "that guy" and trying to insert his favorite things into the fic, but I had this idea for a diplomacy caste that's human-like and won't cause them to attack on sight when faced with the diplomat. They might attack once they realize that it isn't actually human, but they might not. Of course, I'm talking about an insect girl, but it could be a bit... less fetishy... Something more like the bugs from Mimic until we evolve the kinks out. But eventually they'd be pleasant to look at bug girls that use charm to further the hive's interests. Still bugs deep down, though.
>>
>>26247750
A fetish we can gladly share. If we get that eat and adapt mutation we can snatch ourselves a human, that or hivemind control.
>>
>>26247742
possibly but assume if you are able to idenfiy them, then could identify you.
>>26247750
You can try but it'll cost a mutation
>>
>>26247780
:/ im sorry, i think i'll have to catch some sleep.
Good night guys, hopefully you guys liked it, if so i'll try to do it again tomorrow
>>
>>26247779
Shouldn't we have hivemind already? How else are we ordering bugs around if there's no means of communication?
>>
>>26247804
Sure, any given time or will I just have to watch out?
>>
>>26247780
Oh, I'm not saying we do it now. Not at all.

We don't even know we have a penalty to diplomacy at this point. In-character we explain it away as being xenophobic ourselves or simply disinclined to communicate openly. They are threats to our territory and we, as the stronger, want them to go away.
>>
>>26247810
Yeah but can we use it to control non bugs?
>>
>>26247830
Maybe, we could develop some sort of sonic attack to control nonbugs.
>>
Thank you for DMing the quest, Orkwood. I can already tell you have plans for tomorrow and look forward to it.

>>
>>26247909

>>
>>26247887
I think the idea that the bugs view talking as some kind of weapon or enthrallment is hilarious.
>>
If I do end up DMing this, mind control would take 3 mutations:
1. Dimunitive size
2. Paracitic infestation
3. Paracitic Mind Control
>>
>>26247946
why dimunitive size?
>>
Well, I'm assuming we're not going Men in black and wearing human suits. To control the mind you have to be inside of it (because doing it in less mutations is over powered)
>>
>>26247946
>mind control
That's fine if we're going for the hostile to humanity route.

I still... favor... my diplomacy caste idea. And there's no reason the two concepts cannot be merged, with the "diplomacy" term being euphemistic and their true nature more of a deployment mechanism.

I'd shy away from fetishy talk, but there is the idea of a femme fatale infiltrator.

>>26247965
I think he might be thinking of a new caste that is small enough to act as a parasite for mind control.
>>
>>26247946
oh also try to to put it on sup tg if you guys do play on.
>>26248004
ok
lol promise one thing too, if they roll a one make it awesome(well a bad awesome).
>>
>>26243488
How exactly does one play this game?
>>
>>26248037
>sup tg if you guys do play on.
a 1 on which? Size, Infestation, or Mind Control?
>>
>>26248060
New to civ quests? Basically you take a race, set them in a location, and the make decisions for them in such that they are able to survive in the environment and respond to various events/threats.

There's an unspoken tech tree aspect to it, but for the most part you take what you have and use it to make nicer things that you use to make even nicer things.
>>
And what were you thinking about rolling 1's? Would it be the opposite of what it was supposed to be or have an undesirable effect?
>>
>>26248080
I think he means it like this:
>size
If we are trying to become smaller, a 1 would make us much larger
>infestation
Rather than being parasites of humans, they are symbiotic organisms to either bugs or humans (think the Tyrannid bio weapons)
>mind control
Rather than making humans vulnerable to the hive mind, they become hostile to it.

You could easily have other effects, but I suppose that's the idea. Rather than a crit fail doing nothing, it does the opposite of what you intend.
A 2 would be a general failure.
>>
>>26248081
Who sets the challenge? I mean, who decides what I have to overcome? Is that literally the entire game?
>>
>>26248080
any honestly
the rule is farther from 100 the less it is like what they wanted, and then i decide if it good or bad, like with wings a one becomes something heavy on their backs bad being like a growth, good being plates
>>
>>26248136
The DM. And frequently, players dig their own graves in quest threads.
>>
>>26248142
It's still a little confusing.

So I make my race, the DM decides the challenge, and then I just roleplay the result? No numbers?
>>
>>26248137
>e with wings a one becomes something heavy on their backs bad being like a growth, good being plates
Akk k thanks. So I'll roll a d100 and then a d2 if it's within a lesser tier.
>>
>>26248136
The GM. He tells you a story and you decide what would be best to do and you see how the characters grow on you as time progresses.
>>
>>26248160
Well, in this thread we decided to do insects, but generally yes.

And though I'm not the official word on this, I'd imagine dice rolls would come into play for things like combat, general action attempts, and possibly travel rolls. We do use dice rolls for mutation.
>>
>>26248180
Who are the characters?
>>
>>26248196
Currently, the Queen, her loyal attendant Antonymous, and many unnamed and expendable workers.

The PC is either the queen or the hive mind. There will probably be NPCs from other civilizations later.
>>
>>26248196
Anything that can act. Some will be NPC's others will be PCs
>>
>>26248213
And so the whole thread controls the civilization together?
>>
>>26248196
It feels a little cold until now because we play Insects but 'til now we got ourselves the queen, a member of the Queens royal whatstheirface and a Hunter as sort of 'Special' characters.

Sorry if all this is coming a bit late I'm on my phone.
>>
Rolled 12

OK, so what are we doing for this turn?
>>
>>26248239
Yes
>>
>>26248261
Planting a stake with a elk head on the unnatural pathway to tell the figures with the lights who is boss.
>>
>>26248254
It's just really unclear. Is there like a rule sheet I can go over, I'm sort of getting all this information tangled up in my head. Maybe I should just read this one and join one later.
>>
Rolled 10

>>26248277
Not scouting further then? Also assuming that we're digging further. What room are we adding for our glorious hive? Also, what are we doing with all of the rocks (that aren't shiny). Those have to go somewhere. I'll assume hunters hunt.
>>
>>26248295
There are no definite rules, thats the joke. You just say what you think is right and the GM will give you a (hopefully) appropriate response. Just stick around a bit, make some suggestions on your own, hell they cant be worse than mine.

Admittedly there are two rules. 1 the GM is always right and 2 majority vote over your own opinon.
>>
>>26248317
Either we use it for warnings or to cover up our entrance as good as possible (just so its hidden not in a way that we trap ourselves)
>>
>>26248322
Okay so what's the situation so far?
>>
>>26248365
We're in cold mountains, have secured food and a nest, we found a river, some shiny things that we took home, and we have just found an odd pathway (a road) and some creatures that travel on it.
>>
>>26248372
What this guy said.
>>
>>26248372
Do I just post my idea in general, or should it be a response to someone or something specific? What I mean is, should I use double arrows, or just chime in anytime?
>>
>>26248407
>being this new
Feel free to chime in at any time, friend. But a good rule of thumb is to never have suggestions greater than our current capabilities. You'll get a "you cannot do that" from the DM.
>>
>>26248407
Reffering to the OP always works but we will be able to tell if you are trying to make a suggestion, seeing how I'm not even sure who is OP.
>>
Your scouts struggle like a quadruple amputee trying to get the skull onto the stick and driving it into the ground, but they get better at using their mandibles in this way as they continue doing this in multiple places along the path. They then cover the skulls in different pheromones to be able to tell them apart. You can check up on these next turn to see if anything happened.

The workers dug deeper into the earth.

The caste that was handpicked by our holy queen put on a show for her by moving their bodies in a way that seemed to speak to her.

The hunters try to get more eggs. One of them was attacked by a bird and fell to the ground with a damaged wing.

Some of the bugs have decided that they like the taste of the berries. They stash a few of them away for themselves. The ones who had gotten sick seem to be building an immunity to it. They are still hesitant to bring them to the queen for fear that it might be toxic in some way.

What's your next course of action?
>>
>>26248468
Oh good and I was worried we were drug addicts.

Defenetly check out what effect the signs have, good old hunters hunt, workers work orders.
>>
>>26248468
I think we should spend a mutation for some sort of camoflague
>>
>>26248497

>>
>>26248520

>>
>>26248550
Yeah

>>26248560
You can either spy on them or leave the berries as a "gift" somewhere (still spying on them)
>>
We can scout them for a while, then determine a course of action based on what other guys seem to do with them. But I still say we find a way to bring them closer, so we can mark and protect them more efficiently.
>>
>>26248586
Spying on them runs the risk of getting us caught and I'd prefer to not let them know we are here until we either have a strong military or a mimic/diplomacy caste to scout them out without causing a stir.
>>
>>26248592
You want to bring our 'neighbors' closer to the hive?
>>
>>26248586
Thing is we dont want them to think we are trying to make contact for goodwill.

We should continue to scout the settlement and get a feeling for their numbers and technology.
>>
>>26248601
Should we wait until we can develop some stealth capabilities then? I think those would be more valuable than diplomacy in the long run.

>>26248612
Good point, I hadn't considered that. If the find us, they will no doubt try to study us, which could lead to unfortunate results.
>>
>>26248626
Would you consider blending into human society a stealth capability?
>>
>>26248673
I'd consider it the best stealth capability. Hide in plain sight.
>>
>>26248673
It would not help in an actual fight and once it is known there are probably revealing factors though it will certainly come in handy until it is revealed.
>>
>>26248704
I personally consider it more of a diplomacy mutation, but whatever. It means we can access it with the camouflage tech line, DM permitting.
>>
>>26248468
Your scouts notice that one of the signs went missing off the trail. They also manage to see a silhouette of one of the 'neighbors' against the sun. Whoever your neighbors are ... they're big. Later, upon returning to the hive, they talk with some of the warriors about the berries and hatch a plan to feed them to the neighbors. They also get to work on crafting a new pheromone totem in order to replace the missing one.

Your hunters were successful in capturing a few mountain goats by laying a pit trap and chasing them into it.

Your workers dig further but don't exactly know how they should be digging. They end up making a room for themselves. They also manage to find some more shiny rocks to give to the queen.

The warriors have really started taking a liking to the berries. They don't even get sick anymore. Could it be time to present these to the queen?

To do list:
>Figure out what to do with the excess stone you keep clawing out of the mountain.
>Decide whether or not to present berries to our holy matron
>Decide on a way to deliver the berries to the neighbors without getting caught.

evolution and spawn next turn

I don't think the diplomacy caste would be doing any fighting. Maybe suicide bombing, but if the humans start attacking they're more or less dead.
>>
>>26248747
Who said they were humans?
>>
Seeing how OP advertised it several times we probably should feed the queen some berries.

Can we just drop the excess rocks off the cliff?

Also have someone watch the new totem in secret, perhaps its Trolls or Minotaurs that get attracted by the scent.
>>
>>26248731
>excess stone
>wat do
Hmm, that's an interesting question. Meta-wise, we could sell it for more shiny stuff, but in-character wise I'd say who gives a damn.

>berries
No. In my opinion, the berries are poison.

>berries to neighbors
Sure. Get rid of them.
>>
>>26248739
We must learn where this hide comes from. It could prove quite valuable if the cold gets any harsher.

>>26248731
We should test the warriors. Allow the newly adjusted warriors to battle those who haven't tried the berries. The winner will be used to produce a stronger caste.

And maybe we can use the excess rocks to build something to our advantage.

You can. If you drop enough rocks off the cliff, the edge will extend a little further.

It's getting late. Have a productive rest of the evening, gentlemen.

Right now I'm picturing our diplomatic caste going into a human settlement and offering to sell them high quality stone for their castles in exchange for gold. Insect girl merchant-diplomats.
