Notes on Rolls and Voting:

When I request rolls, each set of three rolls counts for one action. For example, a two-step plan would take the first 6 linked rolls. A particularly bad failure can stop your plans early.

When rolling 1d100, I will consider criticals within the first ten linked rolls. Only criticals that occur in the first three rolls will be counted as "supercrits". This is still the case even if you'd have plan long enough to require more than ten rolls.

When I roll 1d20, the rules are the same, but I only consider criticals for the first five rolls, rather than ten. Criticals in the first three are still "supercrits".

When a plot choice results in extensive debate, I'll try to weed out the most popular trains of thought, and then call a vote on them. When voting, please respond with only a link back to the post and the number corresponding to your opinion. Other votes are discounted.

Finally, note that this is not a democracy; it is a benevolent dictatorship.

Recent Events Summary:

You flew to Evinbrook to collect a key to Hecate's prison, but found the castle city locked in a battle for survival. Kan-Abar's armies returned, with two demon lords in tow. Duke Vellik made a plan to stall the demons with patched-up dwarven technology. You brought him to safety in exchange for the key, and offered him further sanctuary, but he chose to remain with what forces he has left and make the Kanians pay for every inch they take.

In order to permanently resolve this situation, you need the rightful king back on the throne of Kan-Abar - Obis Vin. You followed him as far as Port Vanta, where he was looking for an old ally, a pirate captain named Vidar Blackwater. Blackwater, however, made an enemy in a particular crime lord - Damian Vonnegut. You learned that after asking around too much, Obis vanished, and you suspected Vonnegut was the culprit.

You were able to locate Vonnegut's base of operations under the city, and as you snuck in, you encountered Freja Blackwater, the infamous pirate's daughter. After a brief confrontation, you figured out that your goals were the same, and joined forces. You were able to find Obis, and after forcing Vonnegut into a corner by consuming nearly his entire crew, he struck a deal with you for the king's release.

Auriel sees great opportunities ahead. She wants to try to bring together Felnoir, Kelvere, Arland, and Archon into an alliance to turn and face the Kan-Abar army and the demon lords currently consolidating their position from Evinbrook.

To that end, you met with Felnoir's de-facto leader, the mayor of Maven Lake - and Freja's father, Vidar Blackwater himself. He's promised to get in touch with Auriel. Meanwhile, you flew back to Archon to explain the situation to Yi Fang, Sir Flint, and Adavan.

Abigail's entrance into the Archonium was sudden, and not what you expected. She is lost somewhere within the enchanted gateway, stuck between bits of her personality given life and pitted against one another. With no other recourse, you dived in after her, and are now deep within the recesses of your own mind, where you have encountered and merged with your Humanity.

After traversing a strange complex housing the scattered shards of your power, you have reached the center chamber, wherein lies another great force - Temerity.

>Last time...

You return to the central chamber, keeping on eye on Darkxis the whole time. Humanity has wisely taken up a position behind him, just in case. Darkxis seems a bit to...distracted, to notice.

The massive door of marble, steel, and black slate looms above you. The three slots seem to resonate as your shards reach the final platform. The gears of the dark machine thunder through the quiet.

<...step up,> you say.

They do so. Each of them reaches out and puts a limb on the slot...all at the same time, without a word. You don't question it. Sometimes, instinct can be a strong guide.

The machinery stops.

The long, rusty shift of the doors echoes through the room. They open, and stay there. The silence is complete.

<...let's go,> you say. You lead the way through and into the darkness beyond.

You're in a perfectly square chamber made of stone brick. The brick itself is a prism of off-colors, as if oily magic had seeped through the grout.

The door slams shut behind you.

Standing in the center of the room is a dark figure wearing a long black cloak and plates of armor that bristle with Shadow. Crescent moons adorn his helmet and several long chains that hang from his clothing.

<Do you know who I am?> the armored figure asks.

As Flint might say...you've already taken a wild guess. <You are Temerity.>

<Exactly,> Temerity says. <And you...you are weak, and corrupted.>

<...you'll have to give me more than that.>

The armored figure shifts. <You talk like a human. You think like a human, -feel- like a human. Do we seem human, to you? You have forgotten our mission; you have ignored our directive.>

The other members of your party seem cowed before this ominous figure. You step forward. <What mission?> you ask.

<To reunite,> Temerity says solemly. <Like you, I am a but a fragment of the whole. But I can explain, somewhat. Our goal was simple: to regain our full power. Originally, we split ourselves into shards because compartmentalizing our powers lent greater efficiency. In sealing the four 'greater' elementals, we went further. We cracked the binds of darkness holding the shards together, unleashing the energy of those bonds in one single moment. Our recovery has taken over 700 years, but we have finally coelesced.>

<...then we are Erebus,> you say. <We sealed the greater elementals by destroying ourselves, but planned our return all along. This is part of his plan.>

<Indeed. And it is long past time that we move toward its final completion.>

I expect that soon we might be listening to "Am I not Human?"
>>
As you speak, the other shards shy back, leaving you to face Temerity alone. For the moment, you're doing the talking.

<Where does this plan lead?>

<I do not know all the details,> Temerity says. <It was recognized at the time of the split that some scarring might be inevitable, but this lack of memory was to be brief, not chronic. The elf is responsible for that - and for scattering us once more, when we had nearly completed our task.>

<She said she was giving us a choice.>

<That is a lie - a scheme designed so that corruption might take root within us. She did all she could to delay us from realizing our true self, because she feared us.>

<What happens then? What happens when we're complete?>

<I know that it is imperative to finish the work we started,> Temerity says. <That is, our fight against the elemental lords. Exact details, however, are lost to me, as well.>

<...you don't know what Erebus's exact goals were?> you ask. <Why would we blindly follow a path set out for us 700 years ago?>

<You're a hypocrite,> Temerity says flatly. <Have you not consumed all enemies in your path on your quest for greater powers? I was there, each time, urging you on. I dissolved their souls. It is because of this that we have survived. This world has demonstrated time and again that it will not rest until we are dead. Reunion is the only way to ensure we have the strength to defeat the challenges ahead.>

<First of all,> you say, <not everyone is trying to kill us. Second of all, I wasn't looking for power to protect myself. I couldn't reason with everyone, and I needed to protect those I cared about.>

>mfw I have a research symposium tomorrow morning

Seriously debating staying up all night anyways.
>>
<Liar,> Temerity says. <Look at me. Look at me and tell me that every time you Consumed a life, it was to protect other lives. Tell me that in the middle of a battlefield, you stopped and ate corpses because it was nessecary to protect lives. Tell me that when you feasted upon the energy of a mad angel, you did it because you were protecting others, and not at all for power, or vengence. Tell me you snuck about and hunted down the crew of Vonnegut's ship like animals because that was nessecary to protect people. No. Do not lie to me. I know you, because we are us. I was there, on that battlefield, to help you grow stronger. I was there when you ate that angel, ensuring the light of his soul became our darkness. I guided your hand when you killed that crew. I am the voice that tells you to do what is nessecary.>

<I may have not always been driven by pure motivations,> you say, <but in the end, everyone I've consumed has been a foe that threatened those on my side. And all the power I've taken has been used to defend what I find important.>

<Even if we take as fact that you are not a hypocrite,> Temerity says, <this conversation is flawed from the start. We are not here to 'protect' and 'defend'. We are here to complete our mission. You didn't even understand what you were, and you were all too eager to act out a role as a human. Humanity is a small stain on the fabric of reality, and it is a corruption that must be purged from our system.>

Humanity steps up to your side. Its dark crystal burns with a black fire. <If you want to purge me, Temerity, I am here. Do your worst.>

<I won't have to do anything,> Temerity says. <Because our mutual friend will do the purging himself, when he knows the truth.>

<What truth?> you ask.

>con't
>>
<It is simple,> Temerity says. <We are not human, which should end the farce of the little flicker over there immediately. But more broadly, we are not a natural force within this world. This world is composed entirely of various shades of chaos - 7 different shades, in fact. The idea that we are some 8th element is a falsity, composed by scholars that did not dig deeply enough. We are not of this world. We are not of Chaos. We are of Order.>

<What is Order?>

<Order simply is,> Temerity says. <We are totally alien in this world of chaos.> Temerity points an armored finger at Humanity. <That is chaotic corruption.>

<Corruption?> Humanity asks indignantly.

<Humans are made of chaos,> Temerity says. <It is not a criticism. It is fact. We are Order. Taking into ourselves traits of Chaos is, simply, a corruption.>

<Is reason a corruption, then?> Humanity asks.

<We do not need Chaos to have reason.>

<Do you have love?>

<We do not need love.>

<Then we have already lost our reason to live,> Humanity says. <Have not all our journeys been to aid our friends, Sir Flint, and Abigail?>

<Ah, HUmanity,> Temerity says. It does not sigh, but there is a sigh in its words. <That unique combination of arrogance and innocence. I tolerated that foolish adventure in silence because in so doing we built connections to people of power who could shield us before we were strong enough to shield ourselves. It also brought us into conflicts so that we might consume and add to our power without disturbing the world too greatly, without drawing attention. You mistake our following them as some sort of act of free will, when in reality, you have followed the plan. You have chosen the route most likely to help us rise while avoiding the risk a direct attack.>

<Is there something wrong about me?> Huamnity demands. <Because from my point of view, you are cold, intolerant, and altogether inane.>

<You are Chaos, we are Order,> Temerity says. <We have never understood one another.>

<Is that all you've got?> Humanity says. <I'm Chaos, you're Order, as if there's some arbitrary, self-evident truth just floating there?>

<It is a fact. Or do you think oil can mix with water, if you merely stir hard enough?>

<You'd abandon our motivations, /our/ plans, for some mysterious, ancient goal.>

<Your empathy and rash emotion will lead us to an early anihillation.>

<Your hunger for power will do that a lot faster!>

<I,> you say to Temerity, <would like to hear an answer to that point.>

<Fine,> Temerity says. <I am patient. Humanity. You are self-indulgent fantasy of the worst kind. You are weakness. You are a fungal growth that has infected us from within. Yes, you may cite the subjectively wonderful traits of mankind, love, and joy, and other similiar nonsense. Conveniently, you avoid mentioning jealousy, spite, arrogance, vengence. For you, emotion is like pieces of candy littering the path of a small child. You leap and tear for them at every instance. It's pathetic.> Temerity looks at you. <What do you imagine, precisely? To mimick them, and live as one of them? For what? Your own entertainment and comfort? They will live their little chaotic lives, and then they will die. And their children will die. And their children with die. And a hundred thousand years shall pass, and if the chaos of humanity has not raged itself into oblivion, and if the self-multiplying magical chaos has not enveloped all the land, you will live on, alone, watching them live and die. What will you do then, I wonder? Will it have been enough? Will you be bored, and wander away? Will you finally realize it's a cruel illusion made up because an elf was smart and quick enough to wedge herself between our shards? Humanity. A poor joke, at best.>

There's a long, strange silence. While pessimistic, you can't deny the horrible kernel of truth at the core of Temerity's words. Abigail's funeral...will you see it, just like in that vision?

>con't
>>
<I've got a better idea,> Humanity says. <We use our power to make her immortal, like those angels. If Hyperion can do it, we, who are stronger, certainly can.>

<So then you'll both live forver,> Temerity says, <a fate perhaps more cruel. You'll not be separated by the closure death, but by the apathy built over an eon.>

<You don't know that will happen. You're just guessing.>

<Do you deny it is likely?>

<Even if it is, better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all.>

<Stubborn little fire,> Temerity says. <Even if we could perform such a feat, we have not the power now - I can tell you that. Ironically, we would need the power of Erebus to fullfill your all too human wish.>

<I am not a corruption,> Humanity insists. <When Flint nods our way, are we not friends? When Abigail smiles at us, do we not feel fulfillment? If we live forever, then we'll have the opportunity to live a hundred thousand lives, and see so many humans, each one different, and unique. Special.>

<I do not like you,> Temerity says, <but I do not label you a corruption out of malice or ill-will. It is by definition. Inherently, you are of chaos. We are order.>

<So what if I am? Is that really such a bad thing? Can there be no balance, no cooperation?>

<You ignorant flame. There can be no balance between the sun and a void. Order is organization. Order is peace. Order rests, quietly, content. It is chaos that intrudes, that shines its light so glaringly into the dark, that burns and turns and writhes without purpose. Chaos found Order in its home and struck out at it, not the other way around.>

>con't
>>
>>26220271
><It is a fact. Or do you think oil can mix with water, if you merely stir hard enough?>
Man, Temerity would be shit at making salad dressing.
>>
<And what is so great about Order?> Humanity asks. <No change. No motion. Eternal silence. What kind of an existence is that?>

<What kind of existence is a flame that lives only by burning up its own fuel? Magic creates more magic - chaos creates more chaos. How long before humanity tears itself apart?>

<Better than an endless nothing. I say we can contain the overflow.>

<Past a certain tipping point, even we could not contain it,> Temerity says. <Order is not nothingness. It is peace. It is salvation from an inevitable death in the fires of chaos.>

<You deny chaos a hundred thousand years, but believe that a hundred-thousand years of nothing is acceptable?>

<I would rather peace and meditation than your self-destructive strife, petty emotions quantifiable by energetic connections within a twisted brain that argues with itself.>

<Enough!> you shout. They both fall silent. <I've had enough. Temerity. What are you suggesting, exactly? Make it plain, and simple.>

<First,> Temerity says, <we break this thing calling itself Humanity, and leave its shattered bits within this strange vision, where they belong. Second, we restore ourselves to our full power. I have told you all I know - but I do know that once we are reunited and rejoined, we will once again realize our true goals - as Erebus.>

<And here I thought that I was supposed to be the melodramatic one,> Humanity says. <He'll never choose you.>

Temerity ignores the jibe, and continues to look at you. <I am the one that consumed our foes. I digested rotting corpses that we might add that energy to our own. I was there with you in the gutters, in the worst of times, when petty Humanity was nowhere to be found and our very survival was at stake. It is I that binds your enemies with shadow, and it is I that shields you when magic strikes. When you call upon the resolve to do what must be done, you call upon me.>

>con't
>>
>>26220298

Well they still will eventually separate in solution, but Temerity forgets that it is the combination of two "incompatible" substances that makes for a delicious meal.
>>
Humanity just looks at you. <And when you chose for yourself, and not for some ancient mission,> it says quietly, <you call upon me. When you hold Abigail, you speak through me.>

<It is not about what we have done,> Temerity says. <It is about what we are.>

<We are not born within a predetermined mold that dictates the course of our lives!> Humanity shouts. <It is our choices, and our actions, that make us who we are!>

<Does a tree choose to grow?> Temerity asks. <No. It simply does. To state otherwise is to insist that 2 and 2 make 5."

<But we have a mind!> Humanity insists. <We /can/ choose!>

<Yes,> Temerity says. <We are a thinking tree, and you are the axe we might cut ourselves down with. Your -choice- is a maddening insistence that we become a stump.>

<No,> Humanity says. <is it so that we can become something entirely different.>

<And therefore, chaotic.>

<So?>

<That's exactly what I find intolerable.> Temerity looks at you. <I cannot convince a flame to stop burning. On one path, lies survival. On the other, certain death. You know you cannot survive without my power. Mete your judgement.>

<Indeed, do so,> Humanity. <I'm getting tired of the stubborn knight.>

<...why am I the one choosing?> you ask.

<I am Temerity, the willingness to seek and use power,> Temerity says. <You are Judgement, the director of that power.>

<Judgement,> you say. <...then...it is true. Justice...that is my purpose.>

<We asked ourselves a question, long ago,> Temerity said, <when we were united. I remember it. What is justice? What is the source of justice? Ultimately, justice is subjective. Therefore, the most powerful individual is the most influential judge, because that judge can force his justice upon others.>

<Are you arguing that might makes right?> Humanity asks.

That was our conclusion.> Temerity looks at you. <And so to mete our justice, we decided that we must be as strong as possible.>

<You're insane.>

<Denying a truth you can't bear to accept?> Temerity asks. <How very...human.>

You feel Humanity's gaze turn on you. <Well, you picking me, or the madman?>

This is my sentiment. He needs to learn patience. Even if chaos swells out and consumes more of the universe it will eventually burn out, and we'll be there to watch it when it does. Then eventually something else will cause chaos in our world of perfect order, and the cycle will repeat.
>>
>>26220353
We need to tell Temerity that without Chaos the Order he loves so much would cease to exist and that by definition both must exist in balance if they don't want to die out altogether. We need to Chaos AND Order so we know the difference between the two.

The clearest I can think of is proposing that we would wrap chaos withing order, creating... patterned, ordered, chaos. something that can exist both chaotically and yet have definition and order.

From a meta perspective, I can't help but think of numbers like Pi, calculable numbers with meaning and definition, yet infinite and non-repeating.

Actually, there is other thing that order and chaos together brings immediately to mind:

Dynamos.
>>
>>26220621
Not necessarily. If there were no chaos, we would be the only being in the universe. Since we have experienced chaos, we would be able to compare and contrast order and chaos. We'd probably just find order incredibly dull.
>>
You know, I realized something, Temerity is arguing that we shouldn't care about this world because we originate from outside of it, but doesn't the fact that we physically exist within this universe mean that we are NOW a part of it anyways? Our mission is dependent on parameters within this world, the people and forces we encounter, it's not a one-way street.

Some chaos is inevitably going to be introduced into the system anyways.

Oh dear. Temerity has it in mind that his order is like a great sleep, a rest at the end of the path that was made for us, and that chaos is an intermittent nightmare along that path that is to be dealt with and passed off.
Let's ask them more to find more logic fuel to solve this.

<You say to choose as if there are two options. I only see one. Order and Chaos. Opposites, Inverses. The furthest points on a scale, yet at the same time, the closest. Order cannot exist without Chaos, as Chaos cannot exist without Order. To deny one is to deny both. To destroy one, is to destroy both. Our Existance, and that of the world, is more than simply Order and Chaos, or Black and White; It is an ever changing palate of the two. A myriad of greys even shifting, darkening, lightening. To Lose Temerity is to deny our form. To Lose Humanity is to deny our mind. Yes, we are not human, but as the young boy said, we are something else. If I am to be the Judge, then You all; Temerity, Silence, Hunger, Isolation and Humanity, must be my Jury. The others will join, their voices will be heard.>

>>
>>26220776

Oh definitely. We can't accomplish our goals without power, but the problem is that we view our Humanity as a strength in itself, and Temerity only sees it as a ball and chain.
>>
<...you believe that justice is what we make it?> you ask Temerity.

<The exact memories...they are robbed from me, like you,> Temerity begins. <But her power affected you more, it seems. But to your question: the mightiest have the power to define justice. It is as simple as that.>

<That's not true,> Humanity says. <There are rights?>

<Rights?>

<The idea that a living sentience has certain privileges, inseparable from its being,> Humanity says. <Sentient beings have a right to live as they might, as long as they do not harm another's right to do so.>

<A stratagem to grant power to the weak and limit the power of the strong by imposing arbitrary morals,> Temerity says. <In the end...power still reigns.>

<You make a good point,> you say. <Here's one that agrees with what you've said. I believe that Humanity has made us stronger than you care to admit. We would never have accomplished as much as we have if not for the allies we have made and the emotional connections we have nurtured. Humanity has helped us to survive as much as you have.>

<And you have reached the limits of that strength,> Temerity says. <The way forward is through order.>

<Limits, huh?> Humanity's fire flares brightly. <You sure about that?>

<Do not test me, little flicker.>

<But why must we act?> you ask. <If you're right, Chaos will burn itself out. All that will be left is us, in the end. Either way, human or not, we win.>

Temerity slowly shakes its head. <Do you not understand the basic nature of chaos? It creates more of itself. Humanity will be burned as the fire grows beyond its control, but the fire itself will expand to the far corners of the universe. It will burn everything, until there is nothing but fire, and pain, and endless chaotic cycles of energy that spin about themselves, never settling, never resting. Order will be destroyed.>

>con't
>>
>>26220756

Good lord. Use this please, SM.

This is good shit, man.
>>
>>26220799
It still the same argument. He doesn't want to deal with Chaos and it's problems. So he wants to destroy it over take care of it.
>>
>>26220708
This... is a really good question, worth asking but I bet he'll say something related to merging to regain Erebus's memories. Still worth asking though.
>>
If Temerity is the willingness to seek and use power, he should not be rejecting Chaos out of hand as a substance from which he can obtain power.

Rather than rejecting it out of hand, he should be trying to see if Order and Chaos combined are a stronger substance than either alone. After all, a pure metal is not necessarily stronger than an alloy of that substance with something entirely different (and in fact, such alloys are often made specifically BECAUSE the result is better in some respect than the sum of its parts.)

He has already acknowledged that he has let Humanity have run of things in order to gain the advantages it affords us. Is that not a form of power? He should be embracing Chaos as something new with which to improve ourselves, rather than dismissing it out of hand simply because it is different from Order.
>>
<How do you know that?>

<It is something I've retained. I believe that is the goal of our mission: to stop this process. It is the only thing that makes sense.>

<But without chaos, there can't be order,> you say. <We can't destroy half the coin.>

<No. But we might be able to seal it up.>

<Why not keep it where it is now?>

<Do you not remember the army, headed by the demon lords?> Temerity asks. <Chaos grows. It seeks to increase and concentrate its power in greater and greater avatars. First, humans, then demons. Then in even greater beings - elementals. And after them? The roots of the weed must be pulled out. Chaos must be contained as a seed within sharp boundaries of Order. Even now, it is a shoot - but bamboo grows quickly.>

It seems Temerity refuses to acknowledge Humanity as a strength. It views humans themselves as machines of chaos...to dangerous to live. Where is the middle ground?

I like this; if absolute Order is the correct way of things, there should not have been a need to separate it from itself, and there ESPECIALLY shouldn't have been distinct facets of Order to separate itself into.

Also, if he believes that might makes right, and that Chaos, if left unchecked, will be capable of overpowering Order, he should be throwing in with Chaos. If Chaos came into being once, it will come into being again in the future. And at some point, it will grow out of hand before it can be obliterated again.

He should think it better to prune the tree that is Chaos rather than burning it down and hoping a stronger tree doesn't grow from the ashes.

>Implying implications

Temerity is a force for Order, however as choice we are distinctly Chaotic, and can go in any direction. Humanity is a force for Chaos, however as justice, we seek out peace and order.

By simply being, we are the compilation of both shards. By simply being, we are the balance between the two. We are organized chaos. We are an evolving, changing, system.

Temerity is trying to make us believe that bringing destruction to all things will bring about true order, true serenity. Yet in the past, when there existed "true" order, and absolute nothing, a light came into being, and chaos sprung forth. If we bring about eternal night, absolute darkness, unending void, etc... then we are just ensuring that chaos will spring forth again. Again and again, without ending, we'd snuff out the candle of substance with our all consuming maw. Eventually, substance, chaos, light, and whatever else you wished to call it would overpower us. If it's going to go on and on down for infinity, then logically at some point light will prevail.

If we follow Temerity's path, then the order will eventually die forever.

comment's too long,
>cont
>>
>>26221896
But there is an alternative. To not snuff out the candelight of the world. To not CONSUME everything. Instead we could bring about order and peace to the world. Bring forth as much order to the world as is possible. The fire will always burn, flame without end. Yet we could organize it. Let it continue to grow unending, but crystallize it. Bring forth it's light carefully. That is the most order possible in this ultimately chaotic universe, and to attempt otherwise would unpragmatic folly.

<You can make as many points as you want, Temerity. But at the end of the day you are simply arguing that I should choose Nothing over Something. By your very nature you can't present a more substantial argument, because you only wish for an existence without substance. How do you expect me to choose you over -anything- else?>

<...are you choosing Humanity?>

<I am,> you say. <But I am also choosing you.>

<That makes no sense.>

<Humanity is as much my strength as you are,> you say. <I am stronger for my emotion. I am stronger for the ability to empathize with humans. I am stronger for Abigail's love. I cannot reject that. I will not accept its removal.

<If you accept my Judgement, then accept this: there will be balance if I have to forge it myself. Humanity is my mind and soul; you are my body - and I can't live without one or the other. I no longer ask for your cooperation. I WILL have it.>

<...it is as I feared,> Temerity says. <Chaos has corrupted your judgement. I reject it.>

<It doesn't matter. I've made my choice.>

<I refuse!>

<Then I'll force you to comply.>

Your shards gather behind you. Even Silence crouches, ready, waiting. For now, you're the leader of the pack.

<...I see,> Temerity says. <Then let us begin.>

A wave of power blasts out - then stops, a wave of frozen shadow. You try to move, but you're trapped, immobile. It begins to warp, and twist. A howling black wind sucks in toward Temerity.

You feel stripped of something.

Your Wisp disintegrates. Isolation, Silence, and Darkxis turn into tiny crystals. They clatter to the stone, and vanish. Only Humanity remains before you, burning fiercely against the black wind.

Humanity burns at your side, a single black fire. You flex your shadow, confirming that you have yourself back under control, and stare down Temerity. Stripped of your powers, you feel naked and exposed - but you still have options. It won't win.

<Get ready,> you say to Humanity.

Humanity soars foward. Temerity casts a Shadow Beam! The darkness pierces the room. Humanity's flame flares brighter, and the darkness warps around him. Temerity steps backwards, taking space as Humanity tries to close in.

You flank him, and cast your Bind spell.

>Mana: 22/34

Your wraps of Spirit unravel and snap toward Temerity. It tries to dodge, but half your spell entangles it, tripping it over the stone. It scrambles to spread wings and get itself upright.

Humanity is there.

Temerity shrieks as the fires sear into its side. It gets away, but not without a flickering patch missing. You know exactly how much that had to hurt.

Temerity has your back turned to you and is flying away from Humanity...but the room isn't that big. It can't run forever.

What do you do?

<Do you not see the contradictions in your arguments and actions? Where before there was a singular will Erebus left division and conflict. His plans meant for order to gave to chaos and for order born out of that chaos. Yet you still deny the possibility of balance and that from chaos order can be born? Even your on refusal to concede to that results in conflict and chaos within ourselves. Even within order their is chaos and vice versa.>

Humanity tries to catch up to Temerity, but the black knight proves faster and more agile. He flies backwards, firing magic at the flaming crystal repeatedly. Humanity is buffered about somewhat, but doesn't seem hurt.

But he's done an excellent job of distracting Temerity.

BOOM

The knight's helm turns to look at you just as you slam into him. The spinning point of your aura pierces his cloak and armor. You crash into the wall.

The stone doesn't give a single inch - no explosion, no dust, not even a crack. It hurts when you strike it - through, caught between you and it, Temerity is even worse off.

You throw another Bind at Temerity, trying to pin him down.

Temerity has managed to cobble together another spell - a Nighflare! Your magic unravels before it reaches him.

But it doesn't matter, because you're already on top of him. You land a blow, then another, and a third. The weight of your punches crushes his armor. he's thrown back against the wall of the chamber.

You go in for another punch -

He vanishes! Your fist slams into the impenetrable stone.

>you've taken 2 damage (HP: 67/81)

You spin back the other way and see him in the corner furthest from yourself and Humanity. He's preparing a big spell...!

Indeed it does, but I suspect Temerity will make good on the whole might makes right thing and force us to serve him. Not that we'd have right to complain, seeing as how all these people voted to try and do it to him first.
>>
Temerity's shadow lashes out at you, coated in magic. You fall back before the barrage, trading ground to avoid the worst of it, but you still take heavy damage.

>you take 11 damage (HP: 39/81)

You try to get your balance back, but Temerity presses forward. It slashes again, again -

Humanity flies in from the side!

Temerity shrieks again as the fire burns away its shadows. It's forced to back away as Humanity herds it into the corner of the room. The fire grows brighter.

>you've taken 4 damage
>you've gained 2 HP from regen (37/81 HP)

>mana: 18/34 (forgot Ice Strike subtraction)

Humanity is holding off Temerity for the moment, but Temerity is preparing more magic. It can probably Blink again soon...this might be your last, best chance.

>>
>>26224035

>>
>>26224002
No, seriously. The only ally we could possibly hurt is Humanity, and we're not likely to go after it when Temerity is trying to kill us.

Titanic makes us a bigger target, but also gives us way more momentum and physical power. We've only actually been hit by Temerity a few times so far, so I'm not too worried about being a target because we have the initiative.

Schattenkrieg has been fucking him over hardcore. He's got to be taking tons of damage from it.

You struggle forward, but the water has rebounded off the walls and is flowing your way. You're making progress, but it's too slow. You're not going to reach Temerity in time.

<It's time to snuff this little flame.>

He's about to cast the spell. It's even more powerful than the last one.

If that hits you...

...you might not make it.

If you die, Abigail is lost. You feel a terrible fear begin to rise inside of you - the fear that you just might not win this one.

<I'm tired of being called a little flame.>

Temerity visibly recoils as Humanity's fire begins to change. It starts black, then fades to purple, bright, shining - and then the color bleaches out of it, bit by bit, until it's solid white, flaring so brilliantly you can hardly look at.

The water around Humanity vaporizes. It moves faster than before, slamming into Temerity.

The armored shard shrieks as the fire burns into it - but trapped in the corner, there's nowhere for it to go. The fire burns, and burns, erasing the shadow, whipping it into nothingness.

<...stop it,> Temerity cries. <...don't let it win.>

<SHUT UP!> Humanity shouts. It burns until your magic is gone, and Temerity is a clump of shadows desperately trying to piece itself back together. <YOU SHOULD'VE JOINED US WHEN YOU HAD THE CHANCE!>

<Corruption...Judgement, don't...>

<NOTHING WILL GET BETWEEN ME AND ABIGAIL! NOTHING! I'LL DESTROY EVERY LAST BIT OF YOU!!!>

Temerity is on the verge of destruction.

>they are the worlds answer to all the chaos magic, naturally born order mages
We've established that Order lies outside the space of the world, though. It's effectively an extradimensional force that happens to have taken offense at Chaos from its perch in the middle of previously unblemished nothingness. I'm not sure why there would be naturally occurring Order mages if humans are truly an element of chaos. Though it's possible that Humanity IS the neutral force in the world, and it only takes on elements of the things it's exposed to. Helps explain how there can be both Shadow Mages and Elemental Mages, and why our contact with it has driven us to attempt to bridge the gap between Order and Chaos.

<Would he stop if the situation was reversed?!>

<We will show him mercy, even if he does not understand the meaning of the word.>

Humanity continues to burn, threatening Temerity's very existence.

You lunge forward. Humanity's flames rage out of control, and turn upon you.

They lick around you harmlessly.

<...we've been through this.> You grab Humanity's crystal and pull it close. <Calm down.>

<But - Abigail - he'd - we have to - >

<Stop.>

Humanity's fire slowly dies, and returns to its normal purple-black. <...yeah.> It floats behind you, and lingers there, seemingly uncertain.

<...call upon me when you need to locate them. I can sense their presence. That will tap my power, however. Be judicious.>

Question for you - can we later upgrade a Servant to a Chosen by paying the difference?
Do the conditions stack if the cost is paid for both?
>>
>>26225862
read the description. to make a Chosen the person must be a Servant first.
>>
>>26225862
Yes, you filthy fucking nigger. Reading comprehension.
>>
>>26225833
There's white between all the other trees as well, SM is just lazy when it comes to photoshops liquify tool I'm guessing.
>>
>>26225699
I disagree with Abigail because she's too young to have that power and because we're not sure if it stops aging the way Hyperion servants do. Being trapped forever in a child's body is bad.
Also voting against Adavan, but that's already done. But I think we should talk to him, because he's got some strong allegiances to Hecate (who we want to free) and I'm not sure what he wants for himself, yet.

But yeah, as soon as Ila is ready (she's currently wanting to do stuff alone), I vote that we servant her.
Servant her hard.
>>
>>26225862

A person has to be a servant to be upgraded to Chosen in the first place. You make them a servant, and then you can make them chosen. You pay the full cost for both actions.
>>
>>26225862
We can only use Chosen on a Servant. How do you so consistently fail at reading comprehension?
>>
>>26225833
>at the end of the quest it is still unrevealed

>>
>>26225849
>>26225856

Its a trap. There's no need to buy things now.

Finishing the servant tree literally only benefits adavan, and any completion bonus is very unlikely to benefit us.

Temerity fades from your vision.

You glance back at Humanity - and then you stare. In the middle of the room is an Archonium gateway. The magic has recognized your victory.

<Guess this is it,> Humanity says. <Well...if you need a second thought, I'll be there.>

<Understood.>

Humanity fades away like a ghost, but you still feel it burning within you.

------------
------------

Shards of Erebus:
(Isolation) - Normal
{Hunger} - Strong
(Silence) - Empowered
{Temerity} - Fragile

New Shards:
{Humanity} - Resonant

------------
------------

You step through the gateway.

There's a familiar feeling of vertigo. The world seems to flip, and turn, and tumble. Your vision goes dark.

And then is reappears.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0sV8aXy3qik

Before you is a vast, open desert. You take a few paces out onto the sand. It's hot and grainy under your feet. The repetitive dunes are sharp gold on one side, and steeped in shadow on the other. The air feels too dry, as if it's leeching something away from you.

You shift your gaze over the landscape, but the desert stretches to the horizon in every direction. The sky makes a cloudless, bright blue dome over your head. You feel an urge to take cover from the white, boiling sun.

When you finally turn your attention behind you, the archway is gone.

You sigh, and straighten. Another day in this place, another vision, another puzzle. When does it end? Is this where Abigail is, or are you still trapped inside yourself? You feel exhausted...not tired physically, but just mentally drained.

What do you do?

While i'm not necessarily against servanting, Fuck You for buying shit that doesn't help us survive the archonium.

The ONLY thing that may - MAY - be worth buying is The Sense because it may help adavan talk to us through the archonium like he did before.
He's a mind mage, and the elf queen is presumably also, so being able to establish contact with the outside world - since we learned the archonium amplified magic somehow to establish the link with queen whatserfae - its reasonable to assume adavan could replicate the trick.... if he knew what to look for.

Which The Sense might show him.

He could sense abigail inside, still alive.

So if we want to cross the streams, and find abby, having an outside guide who can spot both parties and guide them together would help IMMENSELY.

But fuck buying the entire servant tree.

You use Deep Focus.

Your senses spread in all directions.

You detect nothing.

It's extremely disturbing. Normally you feel the thrum of life...bugs, plants, the wisp of magic in the air.../something/. But there's nothing here.

The sun burns in the sky above you. You decide to dig down into the sand. You plunge an arm down into the grains. You get about two inches deep when you hit something hard.

You clear away the sand in a small space. A greenish tint greets your eyes.

Adamantium.

You pound on it a few times. It doesn't budge. You lift your gaze, and then you realize - the dark side of the dunes isn't dark with shadow. It's dark because it's exposed adamantium metal.

What the hell is this place?

<Humanity. Do you sense Abigail?>

You decide to try getting out of the burning sun. You land, then ink into the sand.

It's a hopeless effort. The sand just isn't deep enough. It's hotter than the actual air. You slither along, probing at the metal, but it's perfectly smooth and seamless. You quickly Ink back up and spread your wings to get off the ground.

The sun burns in the sky above you.

>Or is it just flat, implying there might be an edge of the plate to find in the distance?

Its more likely that there are access points buried beneath the dunes in critical locations we can't see.

If this is a magical metaphor, then Order would be away from Chaos - and as we know, there's a giant fucking barrier between the world and the vast ocean of order outside.
Represented by a...... you guessed it, impenetrable adamantine wall.

But we also know erebus had the power to banish the Elemental Lords(a few) BEYOND that sky-sever powered barrier, while STILL INSIDE IT.
So its possible to get through. We're probably the only one who can.

IN either case, earthforge is the correct answer. It gets us Sun Protection, Shade, and continued use of it lets us look about for weak points we can assume must be there.

You soar toward the sun. It grows larger. It's bigger than any one thing you've every seen.

The fires leap and swirl on its surface. You finally reach the edge of the glowing ball of lava-like chaos. The searing heat penetrates to your core.

>38/81

It's just a giant ball of light, right? Like any light. Just big.

You try to Snuff out the sun.

The sun vanishes.

FUURRRRRROOOOOOOOOOOOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

WHOOMPH

You reflexively put your hands to your ears to cover the sound...but then, you don't really have ears.

You glance down at yourself. In your panic, you assumed that human form between John and the human you created. You allow yourself to melt back to indistinct shadow.

You're floating in a void. The darkness is complete. You wonder if this is what it's like to be unable to see in the dark.

It all feels very familiar.

You can't believe that worked. You suppose not every puzzle has a complicated solution.

There's a door far ahead of you - an Archonium gateway. It twinkles with light. You head for it.

<Wait!>

You stop. <Humanity?>

<...turn. Keep turning. Aaaand....stop!>

You're facing complete blackness. <What is it?>

<Abigail is that way.>

<...are you sure? There's nothing there.>

<...I sense them,> Humanity says. <...other people. Other doors. Hidden. Locked away. Hers...it's there. Go. Go!>

You fly forward as fast as you can.

You're about to ask Humanity if you're going the right way when the world flips around you. The bottom drops out of the world. You feel a sense of vertigo, as if you just passed through an archway. But then...maybe you did.

The world settles back around you.

You land in a bright green field. A river runs through a shallow valley. A small farmhouse lies in the middle of the pastures; you can see several cattle idly grazing.

Mountains rise on either side of the valley, tall and proud. A strange-looking fortress peaks out from the shelf of the cliffs ahead, all spindly supports and thin towers. You gaze at the scene, taking it all in.

<Which way?> you ask Humanity.

<...hmm...I'm not sure, now. It's...the same in every direction. But this is definitely the place.>

This was the second part of the social experiment, by the way. I could have tripped at any point between I started and now, but I wanted to see first when the anti-namefagging reached me(two days short of a month!) and then when the impersonation would start.

So! how does it feel to be me?

A heavy flap of wings - a wind like death - you remember that. It's a more physical memory than anything, but you still remember the image of the giant dragon that attacked you, and the elf queen, back when all this started.

A huge dragon flies over your head at high speed. It reaches the fortress in short order. A heavy bell tolls out over the valley. The dragon shoots its fiery breath down onto the fortress. A globe of spirit magic deflects most of the blast, but many flames linger, hopping on the stone, searching for wood. A barrage of arrows leaps out from the towers, but falls short of the dragon.

What do you do?

I don't usually get involved in this shit. I make a conscious effort to never make a post that has nothing quest-related in it.

BUT.

Seeing as the quest is over for tonight I'll make an exception just this once.

Nevermore generally posts on topic. The few times I've seen him not doing so were his response to other people insulting him. So my opinion is that he's a pretty okay guy as far as internet drama goes, except he can't just let things go. After a certain point it really is a better idea to just stop responding. That's what I try to do and it works pretty well. I don't know if people hate me, but if they do they keep quiet about it because I'm just going to ignore them (or try to, anyway). The quest remains unshitted.

I think Nevermore needs to do this too.

As far as why namefag at all goes, I personally do it so that people know which ideas are mine. That way we can have coherent discussion. If you ever spend time on /pol/ you see that once you start having 3 or 4 people arguing with 3 or 4 other people it gets confusing right quick because nobody knows who is saying what. Quests are about debate and consensus. Namefagging facilitates that. I have a trip because of impersonators.

That is all.

It's an imageboard, emoticons are for forums, if you have the ability to provide any image you desire to communicate your feelings then that is what you should use because it works very very well.
Emoticons are really just unnecessary though and if you're going on 4chan (which has neurotypical behavior on every board in a certain measure) you can expect at least a few vocals to be on your ass for it.

Never post a post unless it's got more in it that's thread related (suggestions, arguments for or against etc.) than isn't.
Don't engage in circle jerking even if the above is true (circle jerking is just talking about myself/what i enjoy/what my hobbies are etc. that nobody really cares about)
Don't feed the namefag trolls. If somebody hates me and insults me just let them. It doesn't matter. I've got nothing to prove to anyone.

By doing this I make sure that, at least on my end, the thread is more about the quest than it isn't and that the parts that aren't about the quest aren't intolerable tripfaggotry or people slinging insults at each other.

I'm told my posting style is abrasive and that I'm egotistical, but at least I'm on-topic.

I don't want to sound like an ass, and those really are good rules to follow, but it seems to me that all of that is common sense?
I guess that's why you aren't as bad as most of the namefags.

People from /pol/ make common sense into rules as a matter of habit. Helps with the agressive internet-tier debates.
>>
>>26228415

FUCK. You got me. That's hilarious
>>
>>26228463
It is common sense. I didn't even write them up until just now and I only did that because you wanted to know them. It's not like I sit here coming through every post cross referencing it with my rules. That's just how I try to behave because that's a good way to behave.

It makes everyone happy.

Without trying to sound like an asshat, when you name/tripfag you have a responsibility. You make yourself stand out, even if you don't really want to, and that means that you can easily become a source of great frustration. If you want to name/tripfag you need to do what you can to not be that source of frustration. I've found that the things people hate about tripfags are when they shit up the threads and derail them by talking about shit nobody cares about. People come here to read SQ, not what Scruffy thinks of boat people and not Scruffy and some Anon slinging shit at each other. So I talk about SQ and ignore shit slingers and everyone's happy or quietly unhappy, which is just as good.

You'd make a good babysitter.

I (he who you quoted) wasn't actually the guy who asked to know them, but yeah no makes sense. And I can see why some people would want to namefag, this being a great example. It's just a shame that 75% of the people who do it are attentionwhores instead of people trying to keep debates orderly, as I'm sure we all know.

And it finally dies.
