You are Percius Aurex, Captain of a raider-class pirate vessel. Formerly the 14th son of a noble family, you fled that life in search of adventure and to escape your status as a political pawn. You've just completed an expedition into the forbidden system of Vectes, sending your men into a severed aft section of an Imperial cruiser. Good men lost their lives in an accident, and you decided to complete the few tasks you'd begun and head on to a planned meeting in a nearby system instead of lingering in the forbidden system.

Currently your ship is docked above the planet Folkvangr under an offer of truce, and you sit across from the Rogue Trader Alexander Kerr. With negotiations over the ransom of the sororitas complete, you shifted the conversation toward trade of a more legitimate nature. Your wolf-pack is to regroup above Caseblanco in 114 days and travel to the neighboring Sector Corgus.

"I have no interest in equipping a pirate vessel with arms, even if my people could spare them. The other goods you seek are possible, though I'm unsure as to your inquiry over millinery products." Lord Kerr's expression remains professional, despite his next words. "Such a question is quite... peculiar."

You're fairly certain that Ana or Tes is nodding behind you.

Starting a bit early due to trade resolution and the chance someone may want to debate choices or ask for other items.

Can't see a reason to switch up what is listed for the current deal.

And I say try to sell some of the sapphires instead of wealth. See if he's interested at least.

Kerr regards you for a moment, his left thumb and index finger slowly rubbing together as he considers your proposal. "I can accept such a deal, but I'll be taking the risk and responsibility of moving cargo stolen from the Iron Monks of all parties. I've never been a fan of or loved by them, but possessing the stolen wealth of Arch-Cardinal Kest" He pauses, his hands raising and making a miming a shrug. "I can find some use for such cargo, though I'll pay nowhere near the prime value. For the difference in your requested trade... say twelve wealth's worth of the smaller stones."

why don't we try to sell the saphires little by little?

I feel like we need to raid a few more ships so we have some deniability as to where we got the gems before we sell anymore.

He is making an offer on goods stolen from the minions of one of the top 2 or 3 most powerful people in this sector, and offering to take the bulk of it off your hands.

"I believe I'll pass upon your offer, Lord Kerr. My minor eccentricity with fine products of Millinery does occasionally demand that I squeeze the most profit possible out of goods."

"We all have our little weaknesses." Your host smiles slightly as if recalling a particular weakness of his own, but soon reverts to his more serious expression. "If the business of trade is concluded, I'm afraid we have other matters that are less pleasant. You've come into possession of a ship that was run by Captain Menexel. The man served beside my father in the Third Crusade and worked with our Dynasty to help rebuild this world. I request that you turn over the personal effects of Captain Menexel and those of his wife, in addition to the cargo he carried for me."

>reposting journal find text!

The room is fairly simple, though the quiet luxuries of it clearly mark it as the Captain's quarters. A large desk in the corner is covered in what appear to be journals and unrolled maps. To your left, a deceptively plain bunk is clearly more luxurious than it would have you believe. The real treasures, however, are likely to be the wash room that seems to contain a large tub and a paired set of carved wooden wardrobes. Almost trembling with excitement, you wonder where his uniform hat is...

You search the area around and even below the bunk itself for the Captain's stash of hats, but only find a collection of journals. Several of them are stained with blood and oil.
>>
>>26193127
but didn't we take a closer look at the journal while in warp-transit? If my memory serves me, they were coded

I wouldn't mind agreeing to return everything though I am conflicted about giving back the hats.

On a side note we should turn the ship upside down in search of that armor.
>>
>>26193113
Hmm, thought so. Lets give him a vaguely positive yet non-committed answer and say that we'll bring the items we find to the next meet.

If there is nothing more to discuss, let's head back to our ship and turn those quarters upside down. We need to decrypt these journals and find this armour ASAP.

"I'll not reject an offer of free labor. If there is nothing else to discuss, I believe we have only to transfer the goods and my crew and I will be upon our merry way?"

Kerr offers his hand once more, and you exchange another gentlemanly verification of a deal. "I'll have my people awaiting you at your ship, Captain Aurex. If you come across more souls in need of rescue, please keep Folkvangr in mind."

Departing Kerr's company, you find a white-robed member of the Mechanicus and two older women awaiting you at the bottom of the gangway to your ship. "Captain Aurex? Magos Oret. I shall be verifying the cargo for Lord Kerr." Various mechadendrites dance about the Magos, though one seems to have spotted Keller and Advinessa and returns their gaze up the gangway itself. "I assume the late Captain stored the cargo in the officer's smuggling compartment? I know the location well and do not require your guidance."

"I believe I'll walk with you, Magos Oret. Lord Kerr mentioned he would send one with knowledge of this ship's type?" Never one to pass up a chance to be let straight toward loot waiting to be found, you motion that you'll follow the Magos. "After you, esteemed Magos. Ana, please escort these two ladies to Sister Jessira and see her off, if you will."
>>
>>26195114

Advinessa and Keller join your little party at the top of the gangway, one of the Magos' mechadendrites maintaining position before your Chief Enginseer as he orates a troublingly detailed history of the construction techniques used to modify the vessels of this type after their capture. Advinessa seems to be enraptured, while yourself and Keller simply nod and allow the majority of the information to go flying over your head. Arriving just beyond your quarters, the Magos stops and motions to a small, innocuous maintenance hatch. "Captain Aurex, I presume you have the key to your quarters?"

Placing your hand upon the hatch, a soft chime sounds from within and the section of wall behind you begins to withdraw. The hiss of a stasis field deactivating whispers about your little party. "Lord Kerr's cargo constitutes only the fifty plasteel crates in the center. I believe the remainder is yours, Captain Aurex. I verify based upon volume that all fifty crates are accounted for."

I think it's time we do some actual pirating. let's find a system without patrols where we could attack a cargo ship.

Btw. what's our stance on slavery, could we take the crew of a ship we capture as slaves?
>>
>>26196172
Are we able to search the station in vectes and still reach the wolfpack before it leaves?

>stance on slavery
Usual pirate stance is to offer captured crew a chance to join your crew/wolfpack

Anyone that declines is subject to your whims. Sell them into slavery, kill them, employ them as slaves, make servitors, leave them ship-lorn somewhere in the void... all cool.
>>
>>26196254
I'm up for a little pirating, and anyone who wants to join our crew when we offer can while anyone else can be disposed of.
>>
>>26196327
That game me a brilliant idea! Anyone who refused to join our crew will be given to our techpriest to see if they have any "need" for them and if they don't need or want them for "anything" we just dispose of them.

depends on how much they would be worth as slaves. We may want to keep those tat would be high quality slaves like people with important skills or pleasure slaves, but everyone else could become raw material for the tech priests

A stream of men and small number of servitors begin carrying Kerr's cargo for delivery, Magos Oret carefully verifying that none of the seals upon the cargo have been broken. "Advinessa, if you'll ensure that Magos Oret has no trouble from the crew, Keller and I have matters to discuss."

"Aye, Captain Aurex. Magos Oret shall experience no delays."

Keller is hot on your heels as you head for the plotting room, finding Elise and Erin studying a multitude of various charts and data slates. "Ladies, I feel a distinct need to satisfy my predatory instincts. I believe it is time we pirate some trade vessels." Your officers share in the grin that spreads across your face, and you all dive into the tedious work as a team.

>Site 1: DI-843. A small star with only a pair of gas giants in orbit, DI-843 is an important point for 4 warp lanes. Though it is uninhabited, this system should see fairly high traffic due to the Core-Dominus warp lane that uses it as a popular jump.

>Site 2: DI-315: A young star at the outer edges of a shrinking nebula, DI-315 is part of a smuggler's run. With little beyond dust in the system itself, this system's traffic is estimated to be low, but it is only a short distance from 'Victory of Faith'...

>Site 3: DI-103: Binary system at the edge of subsector Ionium. Part of a vast 'root' system of trade lanes that feed into the core world of Templos. Target saturation unknown, but Elise finds an interesting note concerning Templos. "if you can't find something to buy, then you should visit Templos"

>Site 4: Astrobel Secundus: Part of a warp lane leading to the Ecclesiarchal world of Astrobel and the moon 'Traitor's Grave'. Ships traveling to and from such a world could be filled with treasures of the Iron Monks or worthless pilgrims.

>Site 5: DI-993: Located between Subsector Ionium and the Core Worlds of Sector Deus, DI-993 is part of a popular smuggler's run used by ships both legitimate and criminal.

This seems interesting. The dust should help us hide and execute an ambush, while smuggling vessels should be small enough for us to defeat.

And we can move on to Victory of Faith if nobody shows up.

There could also be private warships or mercenary forces.

"DI-103 looks interesting, and Templos seems interesting if the hunting is poor. We've got some goods to sell and some wealth to acquire goods. Worst case, we can hunt on our way out of the Core Worlds." Elise and Keller nod at your words, Navigator Erin pulling up a navigation map upon her data slate.

"Captain Aurex, we've two options when it comes to our journey. Folkvangr is seven jumps away from DI-103. The lanes are short, calm but serpentine in nature. We could forge our own path to DI-142, cutting six of the jumps from our journey and saving, conservatively, 19 days from our journey. The lanes should take 23 days to traverse on their own." Tapping the data slate several times, she offers it to you as her suggested paths are highlighted. "From D-103, I suggest we remain upon the warp lanes if we proceed to Templos, it should be 24 days between the two. Quite a short time for traversing a subsector itself, especially one that has reports of warp storms."

As you consider the navigator's proposal, the vox beside you clicks to life. "Captain Aurex, the cargo has been delivered to the dock and verified. Payment for our guests is being weighed as we speak. We'll be ready to offload Sister Laurent and depart shortly."

"We'll take the warp lanes. Better to lose time and travel through calm warp space. Elise, Erin, prepare the ship for departure and get us to our hunting grounds. I'll see off our guest." Your officers nod and depart the plotting room behind you, scattering to go about their business. Alarms sound as you travel to the gangway, finding Ana beside a calm Sister Laurent. "Captain Aurex." Tight-lipped as ever, this one.

"The Emperor works in mysterious ways, does he not, Sister? Do look after Sister Jessira, and may we meet again under better circumstances." With a flourish, you sweep your hat from your head and hold it over your heart while your left hand gently grasps hers and raises it. "Fare well, Miss Laurent. It was a pleasure to have you grace my ship and myself with your presence."

She slaps you. "If we meet again, Captain Aurex, I intend to kill you for your crimes." As several of your armsmen walk past with the gold bars, you motion that the Sister may depart. Ana's smug grin and eyes fall upon you as the bulkhead begins to close. "Does that mean she likes you, Captain?"

"I am ze locksmith of love, no?"

>>26212755

Your ship burns hard as it departs Folkvangr Station, the trio of escorts departing shortly behind you and following at a comfortable distance until your ship prepares for warp travel. Time seems to jump due to the short nature of your jumps, causing a minor bit of warp sickness among the crew, but nothing that is worth concern. The sixth jump sees your ship exit within the gravity well of the system, a thundering crash sounding throughout the vessel as gravity pulls at the forward portions of the vessel before the aft is clear of the warp. The damage is minimal, but the experience is one you'd prefer to never repeat again.

Navigator Erin begs your forgiveness for her error, offering to halve her next share of loot as penitence. Concerned your officer is suffering from exhaustion, you order her to rest while Kihomi pilots the vessel from the system's gravity well. Once more your ship eventually tears back into reality at the edges of DI-103. A small convoy of several ships heads toward the opposite edge of the system, too numerous and distant for you to intercept before they jump out.

Elise and Advinessa study the auger readings as they filter in, searching for features to use as part of the planned ambush.

>System features
>Outer Reaches: 2 asteroid clusters
>Habitable Zone: 3 rocky planets, 1 asteroid cluster, 1 asteroid belt
>Inner Cauldron: 4 rocky planets, Solar Flares
>>
>>26212771

"I doubt any ships will dive the Inner Cauldron to traverse the system, they would be adding too much time to their journey in most cases. The clusters in the Outer Reaches and the features of the Habitable Zone will likely be our best bets, and we can make a silent run from them to strike prey that passes too close. On the other hand, using them could mean that we're out of position to intercept the vessel we want." Elise sighs, her fingers playing with her earlobe nervously. "What do you think, Captain?"

>Orders?
>>
Did we get anything done on the trip?
I think we still aren't done exploring the ship, mapping everything out and and cataloging it.

Anyway, the outer reaches are where ships come in and out of warp, right? That's when ships are at their most vulnerable, so I suggest we set up shop there.

>>
>>26212838

>exploring the ship, mapping everything and cataloging it.

Your ship is 1.7 km and literally a maze of machinery and compartments. Some vessels are known to have literal ecosystems in the bilge areas or compartments long sealed from the rest of the ship by battle damage or repair teams.

You'd have to put it into dry dock and literally strip it to the bare spine to fully explore it.

As is, there is a small chance something from a pre-set list is found at random intervals. [Kerr's offer was a minor quest reward for following two hooks]

Inner Cauldron: the subjective 'hot' zone of a star, usually too hot to support life.
Habitable Zone: the 'sweet spot' where liquid water is likely to exist upon worlds orbiting the star
Outer Reaches: often the largest zone, it is everything beyond the habitable zone within the star's gravity well.

Ships generally exit the warp on the edges of the Outer Reaches. In this system, most ships will have to traverse the gravity well of the star in order to safely and easily jump the next leg. This also allows their warp drives and Gellar fields to be inspected between jumps, and for navigators to get some rest.

Where exactly a ship exits the warp is effectively random except in the case of the most skilled of navigators.
>>
>>26212878

There are two clusters roughly opposite each other in orbit of the star.
>>
>>26213001
>You'd have to put it into dry dock and literally strip it to the bare spine to fully explore it.
We'll get to that part eventually, but making sure that everything available to us is accounted for is a good start, right?

If nothing else, we can have ship exploration as a task for whatever idle personnel we might have at the moment. Like the armsmen. When they aren't training, have them explore along with a techpriest or two.

We also need to set up training programs and stuff. To train generic crewmen and slaves into armsmen, trained crewmen and stuff. And the techpriests are welcome to take servants for evaluation too. Hopefully, they will find some potential tech adepts that way.

Stuff like that is what I mean when I say we should do things during warp travel.

>Armsmen
Generally, these souls are volunteers due to the high risk/reward lifestyle. True armsmen are separate from your crew, as they're constantly training across the ship instead of running it. You can create conscript armsmen, but expect problems.

>techpriests
Most techpriests have a small party of adepts among your crew that assist them. Most adepts will never be skilled enough to be techpriests. Nor does the priesthood want just any monkey as a techpriest.

Techpriest numbers are most often increased by recruiting, rescue, or conversion of prisoners.

Taking up position in the first cluster, your vessel's systems seem to settle into an alert rest while your crew prepares themselves for a long wait. The day after you set up shop, your augers light up with contacts as nearly a dozen vessels are flung back into reality at the edges of the system. Several contacts that seem to be forming into a convoy set course to plunge deep into the Habitable Zone, one of the four large enough to be cruiser sized. Two other contacts set course to follow, though the angles involved suggest they are keeping their distance from both the group and each other. They're believed to be smaller transports.

The targets you're most interested in, however, are the ones on course for Templos itself. Three ships are on course for the trade world itself, one clearly an escort class vessel or sprint trader judging by speed. The other two take divergent courses, neither heading directly toward your hiding place. One is on course to brave the asteroid belt and cut several days off it's travel, while the other seems content to orbit widely around the Outer Reaches and take the long way. At these ranges, your augers can not give you any more detailed information.

Your ship gladly maneuvers behind an asteroid to hide the burn that will carry you to your target, the systems functioning perfectly as your ship closes with it's prey. For hours your crew waits as the augers slowly build a better picture of your prey, hoping that the ship isn't detected despite the silent run procedures...

"They don't seem to have detected us, but they will soon enough. All hands prepare for battle!" You grip the command throne with your golves, the bulky carapace of your voidsuit both comforting and instilling you with a sense of dread. This might be the time your luck runs out.

>>
>>26215174
Probably too late but definitely get them from behind, I think only Eldar vessels have Keel weapons. Head On could work if they only have broadside weapons, but I'm guessing that they'll have at least a Dorsal or Prow weapon to hit from the front. Broadside rhymes with Suicide, which is basically what it is. Imperial ships are all about broadsides, their prow weapons nixed in favor of higher armor to see them get safely into broadside range.

tl;dr- when you have the option to attack from behind, you best take it.

"Star clippers and other custom vessels. The target seems to have a battery spread about the keel section of it's fins, I believe them to be the Sunsear laser STC."

"That isn't good! If they gain much more on us they'll be out of our range, and we can't close without abandoning our evasive maneuvers." Kihomi shakes her head at the helm. "Captain, this one might be too big for a single ship!"

VU stands for Void Unit. There is some roughly defined measurement for it in Rogue Trader, but for now it's just a rough measurement of space distances. I really should have read up on our ship before now. That No Broadcasting thing mighta been really useful, letting us try to scan the ship before going after it and committing to the attack. Might have found out what weapons it had, if they weren't concealed. And I mean they musta been powered on, making them easier to detect, cause they were able to fire right away instead of taking a turn to charge and turn on, if we're going by RT. >>
>>26216710
Any chance we can Aid Another Keller with his Lock on Target check? Aside from that everyone seems to be doing a good job/

>>26216702
The enemy's stopped evasive maneuvers and is putting all available power into getting away. If their targeting gets worse, then our stopping evasive maneuvers should balance out and end us up at the same chances we were before. Plus the Sunsears have better range than our stuff, we really want to close to 6 VUs to allow our cannons to fire at full effectiveness. Lastly, the fact that they're running speaks for itself. You typically don't run from a fight you think you can win.

Negative.

Typing turn, then.
>>
>>26216854
It's because we're not a Real Rogue Trader (tm) that we can't give him +10, isn't it? ISN'T IT?! Clearly we need a much better hat to allow us to confer a bonus like a real RT!

The ship lurches as Orsola nurses additional power into the engines, your target's speed advantage soon gone and your own increasing. "Keller, prepare to fi-" Alarms sound across the bridge, drowning out your words as Advinessa abandons her post and rushes to Orsola. You feel the ship's momentum shift slightly and you shout at the top of your lungs. "Fire! Keller! Fire!"

Your macrobatteries scream into the void at your target, and Elise is the first to call out the results over the blaring alarms. "Hit! A very palpable hit! Looks like we tore her flank open!" A massive cloud of atmosphere, debris and likely corpses trails your prey, but you notice the more important information. She's pulling away at nearly twice your speed.

"Report!"

"Engines at half power, Captain! They couldn't take the extra power!" Advinessa's voice barely audible over the alarms, and she soon has them silent. "We'll need to enact repairs. By your leave, Captain." As your Chief Enginseer rushes from the bridge, you slam your fist upon your throne. If those engines aren't repaired immediately you'll have no chance of catching the wounded vessel.

>Orders?
>Follow the Target, they're wounded and you'll have your engines back soon...
>Disengage, you can set course for another, slower target and still catch something...
>Other?

>>26217130
Before we decide, can we get a scan off on the enemy to determine the damage to her engines, if any?
>>
>>26217130
Continue the chase and wait for the techpriest's report.

Do we have any reports of other danage we might have gotten from the 2 hits?

How far away are the nearest ships?

It might be a viable option to threaten them via vox if there are no other ships to close
>>
>>26217307

If her engines were damaged, you'd notice immediately.
>>
>>26217334
Damn. Well then I can only say to press our already strained luck and

>Follow the Target, they're wounded and you'll have your engines back soon...
>>
>>26217130
Follow them.

If we let them get away, they'll warn the other ships in the sector and we'll be forced to withdraw empty-handed.

>Enemy Vessel is clear of Vox Jamming range

"The Merchant Lords shall hear of this, you fools! But more importantly..." The vox is silent for a moment. "Farewell, and may you always remember the day you almost, caught, Captain Jack Bolton!"

>>

Despite Advinessa's best efforts, it takes nearly an hour to repair the engines. "One of the plasma manifolds was nearly melted through, Captain. It is patched for now, but additional attempts at increasing output are ill advised."

Elise sighs as she hands you a report. "We lost some crew in that hit that struck the bow, but we're still in combat condition for the right target."
>Hull: 31/35
>Crew: 99%

The sprint trader has taken advantage of your engine damage and escaped combat range.

You know only that they have a very expensive ship working for them. And it is likely beyond your reach.
>>
>>26218303
Damnation. All these years playing BFG have led me to ruin, have failed me. I mean I can console myself with the thought that the sides or front would have had even more weapons but.... Damn keel weapons. Would we have been able to scan them earlier, to try and detect weapons, by the way?

Also >Stern Chase
>>
>>26218363
Considering how small our current ship is, it probably falls below anything that would appear in BFG.

The stern guns that were firing on us might not even have stats aside from the turret rating in BFG.

Eh, it would work as an Escort. And the stern guns were probably like, Weapon Battery 1-2 rating. Still stings to be so wrong. Also someone else please roll since apparently dice hate me.

you're in a raider/destroyer sized ship, slightly larger than a cobra class destroyer.

You encountered a sprint trader, which is far too valuable for the Imperial Navy to have as a transport.

What IS a sprint trader?

I'm guessing something akin to a schooner during the age of sail. Fast, badass courier ship.
>>
A star clipper is a fast lightly armored transport ship, they are an oddity in the imperium and more often than not carry high value cargo.
>>
>>26218533

You give chase to Captain Bolton's vessel, swearing to yourself that you'll have his hat!

After nearly a day, you've gained little upon his vessel and your augers detect his ship's warp drives activate as he makes his escape.

"Emperor damn it!" Your fist pounds into the command throne.

>Out of position to intercept other ships.

>>
>>26218576

'Sprint Trader' covers everything from specialty-built fast, lightly armored transports with raider speed to escort class vessels modified with copious cargo holds. Most mount more powerful drives than standard [like your own ship's drives]
