The ride continues on VALKYRIAN MERCS QUEST

Don't know what Valkyria Chronicles is? Check it out here! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valkyria_Chronicles or http://valkyria.wikia.com/wiki/Valkyria_Wiki

You are JAGER STURMFUHRER, leader of the fledgling mercenary company DEMONS OF RANDGRIZ. In addition to fighting Imps for money and vengeance, you have your own private mission to hunt down Karla, your former fiance who sided with the Imperials and destroyed your home.

You first arrived in the Federation nation of Albion to help defend it against a possible amphibious attack. However, your boots barely hit the deck before you were assigned a mission to break up a spy ring. However, through a chain of extraordinary events, you not only smashed the spy ring apart, but also managed to capture an Imperial u-boat (mostly) intact, and figh off an Imperial amphibious invasion by defeating their leader, Belkan Knight Sir Fleisher.

You then moved on to Ustio, where you helped the beleaguered defenders fend off an Imperial offensive and stage a counterattack. While there, you also took care of a personal mission for Qyburn, got a new weapon called the Buzzbomb, recruited some new squad members, and helped Isolde regain her honor by defeating the Knight leading the Imperial forces in the area, breaking the back of the Imperial offensive.

You then returned to Gallia to help the Loyalists fight the GRA and rescue Archduchess Cordelia. You also finally decided to move on from your past and start a relationship with your longtime friend and XO, Sam. Now, you've been recruited by Lynch to destroy two Valkrur superweapons. You already managed to destroy Stonehenge, and all that is left is Excalibur.

After the destruction of Stonehenge, you and the rest of the Demons high tailed it back to Gallia where you lay low at your castle while the heat dies down. Lynch has promised to use his position to deflect attention away from you, and focusing on the nonexistent Colonel Ozling. Not only do you have to wait for the heat to die down, but you also need to wait for more details about what Excalibur is and how to get to it.

So... it's basically lots and lots of waiting right now.

However, when you return to Castle Sturmfuhrer, you notice something odd. Military construction crews, professional ones, not the skilled but amateur Darcsens refugees, are started to erect additional structures outside the castle. You can only think of one person being responsible for this...

"Grandmaaaaaaa!" Stomping your way into Grandma's stateroom. "You have some explaining to dooooooooo!"

You're honestly not surprised. Grandma did have the annoying habit of going off and doing her own thing, which caused your parents endless headaches. It was partly the reason why they sent her away, so they wouldn't have to deal with her shenanigans, even if they were done for the good of the house.

"No need to shout so loud, dear. I'm right here." Grandma sighs, setting down her cup of tea.

"Grandma, you're doing stuff without telling me again."

"Well, you were away with no way to contact you. What else was I going to do?" Grandma shrugs.

"Grandma, why are there military construction crews here?"

"Oh, that, I've been having some chats with the Archduchess as of late." Grandma smiles. "And I have to say, she is VERY grateful for your rescue of her during the civil war."

"Grateful enough for a favor, I assume." You narrow your eyes.

"Jager, what you are looking at is the future site of Gallia's second military academy."

"Wait.... what." Your jaw drops.

"Well, it's only natural, with that massive scandal Lanseal is suffering at the moment." Grandma smiles. "Secret human experimentation on children tends to be a pretty big hit on your reputation."

"Okay, what's the catch here?" You slump in the chair opposite Grandma.

"Not much. All we do is lease some of our land to the Gallian government. As the landowners, we still have a degree of control over it, even though the government nominally owns it."

"Thats the spirit!" Grandma beams. "Think of like this. At least you'll have a security net in case that whole mercenary gig doesn't work out, like, when, you know, the war ends."

"I know, Grandma."

"And I'm pretty sure you're good with kids, considering how that Artya seems to hold a special place in your heart.

"I know, Grandma." You sigh.

"Either way, it won't be done for another few years, but we'll have much more modern facilities, as well as military resources at our disposal. I convinced Cordelia that this place could act as a second line of defense in case Ghirlandio falls again."

"Well, I'm sure she of all people is rather tired of Gallia getting invaded." You nod. "Anyways, have you gotten any messages from Artya or Matt?"

"A few." Grandma hands you a few letters. "Nothing much. Due to Lanseal's closure, as well as all their service during the civil war, all surviving students at Lanseal received advanced automatic graduation. They're off helping build some new Gallian military unit. A lot of secrecy around it, but I'm sure I can find out more later."

"Well, I need to be going." You say as you get up from the chair. "I got other business to take care of. Just... next time can you please TELL me when you're going to do something crazy beforehand?"

"Says the kettle to the pot." Grandma casually sips her tea.

Admitting defeat (for now), you leave Grandma's stateroom and head over to the castle's new communication bunker, where Elizabeth has taken up residence.

"Hell there, Captain. Need to talk with Lynch?" She asks.

"Yeah, can you get him on the line?"

"Yeah, let me just adjust this..." She says as she tunes into Lynch's secure frequency.

You hears a series of nonsensical numbers and beeps being broadcast over the radio. You have no clue what any of it means, though Elizabeth is busy jotting everything down on her notebook. She then turns off the set and does some more scribbling.

"So...." She says, reading whatever she just wrote down, "Lynch is pretty much stringing the investigation along. He's managed to convince them pretty thoroughly that 'Colonel Ozling' is the one responsible for the incident and that he's doing everything he can to hunt him down. As for Stonehenge itself, the guns are pretty much unsalvageable."

"What about Commander Garret?" You ask.

"Well, considering she isn't officially at fault, they didn't give her TOO big a punishment, but this all still went down on her watch. She got a transferred to a research position, which basically amounts to trying to reverse engineer the Stonehenge guns from the wreckage, so at least she's got something to do for the next few years. Also, Lynch is wiring your payment from one of AIS's secret accounts.

Spiderweave Armor (PROTOTYPE) - 1200
Constructed out artificial fibers several times stronger than steel, this cloth armor provides superior protection to standard Scout armor with no additional weight.

Suppressor - 1500
Portable addons to any existing Gallian weapon to reduce the sound the weapon makes. However, they're not quite as quiet as the Gallian-Q, and have a minor negative impact on weapon performance.

War Emergency Power (PROTOTYPE) - 2000
By disabling the mechanical limiters built into vehicle engines as well as injecting more efficient coolant directly into the engine, total horsepower is nearly doubled. However, has a high chance of damaging said engines.

Demolisher Assault Gun - 3000
A cannon specifically designed for Kilroy that allows it to shoot a heavy high explosive mortar shell specifically designed to destroy enemy fortifications. Has much shorter range and armor penetration than its regular gun, which it replaces if equipped.

Fenrir Heavy Upgrade Package - 6000
Upgrades the Type-36 Medium Tank to a Type-36 Heavy tank. Also includes one master upgrade.

Buzzbomb Launch Racks - 8000
Replaces the Vergeltung's aft cargo bay with vertical launch tubes specially designed to hold and fire buzzbombs. Increases the amount that can be called down from 1 to 4.

>-6000 credits

"Ah, an excellent choice!" Qyburn nods. "This will require me to overhaul the Fenrir, so it'll be out of commission for at least several days. I hope that isn't too much of an inconvenience."

"It should be fine." You shrug.

"Also, this is the perfect opportunity to use the Fenrir as a testbed for some experimental technology of mine! However, I'm afraid there's only enough carrying capacity for one of the upgrades..."

"Let's hear it then."

REACTIVE ARMOR: A highly experimental type of armor that repels incoming projectiles by exploding on contact. Vastly improves protection. However, reactive armor is destroyed when hit, leaving that particular area vulnerable to future attack.

122mm REAPER CANNON: Currently the largest gun ever designed for use on a tank, the 122mm Reaper Cannon has enough stopping power to make even the heaviest Imperial tanks quake in fear.

Horizontal Volute Spring Suspension: An improved suspension system allows for a smoother ride, somewhat improving the vehicle's maneuverability, as well as making it a more stable firing platform while on the move.

You decide to go find Julia and tell her the good news. However, oddly enough, you don't find her at the motorpool. Headcase and the Stig are there, trading stories about their exploits, and the Stig politely declining Headcase's offer to install a new sound system in the Growler.

"Hey, Headcase, Stig, you guys know where Julia is?" You ask.

"Julia? Last I saw, she was headed for the main keep." Headcase shrugs.

Wondering what Julia could possibly be up to, you head for the main keep as well, where you see Julia standing outside Grandma's door, deep in thought, as if she were trying to decide whether or not to knock on it.

"Something the matter Julia?" You ask.

"Oh! Nothing sir!" Julia squeaks in surprise as you approach. "Nothing at all!"

"Which would be..."

"There... there was this guy I met in EWI."

"What, like a lover or something?" You ask.

"Sounds pretty heavy." You frown. "You need any help with that?"

Julia seems to be taken aback by your remark.

"W-why would you bother?" She asks.

"Julia, you're a Demon, which means you're pretty much family to me. Demons and family look out for each other." You reply simply.

"Well, if you put it that way, then yeah, I could use some company." Julia admits.

"Come on then, let's go ask Grandma if she knows this Dillon of yours."

You open the door, allowing Julia to enter.

"Thanks." Julia mumbles, obviously not used to being treated politely like this.

"Ah, Jager, Julia, what brings you here to my chambers on this fine day?" Grandma asks with a smile.

"You glance over at Julia, who gets the clue and speaks up. "Um, Mrs. Sturmfuhrer, I was sort of hoping to ask you something..."

"Well, how am I supposed to answer you if you don't ask the question? Ask the question, don't ask to ask it!" Grandma laughs.

"Well, this is kind of a long shot, but do you happen to know anybody named DIllon?"

"Hmmm, there's a lot of people named Dillon, dear, you'll have to be more specific." Grandma sighs.

"Uh, well, he was a fencer in EWI and... that's all I know."

"That's a good idea." You nod. "Come on, Julia."

The both of you walk out of the castle and towards the main construction area, where you're most likely to find the people Grandma was talking about. However, Julia is oddly silent along the way, leaving this sort of awkward silence.

"Sounds like a good man." You nod. "I really do hope we can find him."

"Oh my god, it's him." Julia stops in her tracks and gapes. "What the hell is he doing here?"

"Huh? You mean Dillon?" You ask.

"No, somebody else I know." She shakes her head and points. You follow her finger to see a huge ox of man unloading vegetables from a truck. "It's Uncle Largo..."

"Wait a minute..." You narrow your eyes. The man looked somewhat familiar, until it hit you. "You mean to tell me you know Largo Potter? From Squad 7?!?"

"Well, technically, I knew him from before he joined Squad 7." Julia shrugs. "Old war buddy."

"Julia, just how old are you?"

"You'll never know."

"It was worth a shot." You concede. "You think he knows where Dillon might be?"

"Can't hurt to try." She shrugs. "Hey! Uncle Largo!"

Largo turns to see Julia, and a big stupid grin forms across his face.

"JULIA! It's been forever!" He laughs loudly, pushing his way through some workers and snatching Julia in a huge bear hug. "How have you been doing, kid?"

"N-not bad." Julia gasps for air while trapped in Largo's clutches. "You're just as strong as ever, I see."

"That's because I've never stopped eating VEGETABLES!" Largo yells loudly and proudly. "Since the end of the war, I've started up my own veggie farm and I've been shipping them all over Gallia!"

"That's great!" Julia smiles and motions toward you. "Oh right, Largo, this here is my boss, Captain Jager Sturmfuhrer."

"Aw man, I heard of you! To think, I get to meet a real celebrity!" Largo laughs as he shakes your hand. You wryly note he's got a VERY powerful grip. "Sergeant Largo Potter, at your service! Well, ex-sergeant anyways."

"I heard a lot about you too." You reply. "Anyways, Julia here actually has some questions for you."

"Um," Julia shifts nervously, "Largo, you remember that guy who brought me to you? Dillon? Did you ever find anything on him?"

"Hmmm..." Largo pauses for a second. "OH YEAH! I totally forgot! I asked Eleanor to go through all the old war records, and I think she found something! She came across a record of a Dillon being admitted into a hospice a couple years back. It's actually not far from here."

"REALLY!?" Julia's eyes widen. "Where!?"

"Let's see..." Largo scribbles something down on a notepad. "Okay, hopefully I'm remembering right, if not Eleanor's gonna kick my ass."

"Thanks a lot, Uncle Largo!" Julia hugs the giant ex-lancer. "I promise I'll try out some of your vegetables later!"

"That's the spirit!" Largo laughs. "Go get em!"

One harrowing half-track ride later, and you reach the hospice in record time. You notice that this particular hospice was set up for aging war veterans. Not exactly the most dignified way to go, in your opinion.

And, oddly enough, you see a figure standing in front of the hospice. He's impossibly old, but stand with a strength and posture that indicates that his age is no obstacle to him.

Also, he's wearing full plate armor and bearing a large sword and shield.

"That's far enough." The ancient fencer says. "You will not be plundering this hospice."

"Is that him?" You whisper to Julia.

"Y-yeah." She nods.

"Well, what are you waiting for? Go talk to him!" You shove Julia forward. She moves forward meekly, a bit unsure of herself.

"So, Stig, who the hell robs hospices?" You ask."I mean, what is there even to steal?"

The Stig just shrugs.

Meanwhile, Julia approaches the aged Dillon cautiously.

"D-Dillon? Is that you?" She asks softly.

The fencer gives Julia a confused look for a second, before his eyes widen in recognition. "Little one! I see you have been doing well since last we met!"

You can't see from here, but you have the sneaking suspicion that Julia is crying. Not that she'd ever admit it, though. You see her and Dillon embrace for what seems to be a very long time.

"What are you doing out here?" She asks between sobs. "What have you been doing all this time? Why'd you just leave me there?"

"So many questions, little one, but I have such little time to answer." Dillon sighs, patting Julia on the head. "I go where I am am needed, and you no longer needed my help. Nothing more, nothing less."

"Then what are you doing here?"

"Even with the war over, its effects are still felt in the countryside." Dillon explains. "Thieves, bandits, marauders of all kinds prey on the weak and vulnerable out here. It's my purpose and my cause to help those who need it."

"So, uh, these bandits." You ask, reluctantly butting in. "Are they still around? And uh, how well armed are they?"

"Just a bunch of hungry and desperate fools." Dillon shakes his head. "Not quite malevolent, just misguided."

"I thank you for your assistance in this endeavor." Dillon gives you a respectful nod. "You're a good man, Jager Sturmfuhrer."

"I don't remember introducing myself." You frown.

"You didn't need to. You're quite the hero in Gallia, you know." Dillon laughs. "More than I, at least."

"Quit being so modest." Julia shakes her head.

"I merely do what I can, little one. Your friend here has done far more than I have, and that deserves my respect."

You now understand why Julia has a such a large amount of affection for this man. You have to admit, he does have a certain kind of charisma about him.

"They come." Dillon says, pointing off in the distance.

In the distance, you see a small gaggle of vehicles approach. To say that they were threatening was a bit of a joke. They were basically just civilian vehicles with cheap steel plating bolted on.

"Ha ha, very funny." You sigh.

Damn, this guy was good.

As the bandits pull up, they see the Growler and stop in their tracks. There's a bit of an awkward standoff as the bandits don't see quite sure what to do. Believing the needed a bit of prodding, you yell, "Who's in charge here? We just want to talk for a bit, that's all!"

JAGER STURMFUHRER, PART-TIME BANDIT PUNCHER!
>>
>>26148754
Unfortunately, the only response is the sound of a bullet whizzing by your head.

"Well, it looks like the time for talk is over." You say.

"Works for me." Julia says as she lets the .50 cal roar. The Stig meanwhile floors it and starts doing combat maneuvers in the the Growler.

Meanwhile, Dillon raises his shield and charges at the bandits. There's four vehicles with four to five people in each, so he's effectively going 20 vs 1.

With the Var mk2 in hand, you leap off the Growler and sprint to Dillon's location. Dillon sees you approach and instinctively reorients himself so he acts as mobile cover so you can fire Var over him.

Julia continues to pump .50 MG fire into the bandits. To their credit, that extra armor plating they bolted onto their cars is the only thing keeping them from getting instantly pulped by the massive weapon, but it wasn't going to last long.

So I totally missed the thread where we got the Var. I just thought it was a big fucking machine gun.

So you're telling me, its a big fucking machine gun, that also shoots grenades, and is ALSO a sword?

If we can use a grenade as we advance to make our jobs easier.

You fire off several wild bursts with the Var mk2, more to just keep their heads down while you advance behind Dillon. The Growler continues to circle around the bandit formation, pumping .50 cal fire into the vehicles, slagging and ripping apart armor plate, forcing most of the bandits to dismount.

However, at that point, you and Dillon already amongst them, and with your swords drawn, start carving a path through them.

Truth be told, the whole thing was kind of a blur. Like the knights of old, you and Dillon carve your way through who knows how many bandits, blood and gore being spattered everywhere. Like a mighty broadsword, every swing of Var mk2 cleaves of arms, legs, and sometimes the occasional head. Brute force at its finest.

Dillon, on the other hand, is all about finesse and precision, which is all the more important in his advanced age. Not a single move is wasted, effortlessly weaving and dodging and stabbing at vital points. He moved like a man a fraction of his age.

At this point the bandits had more than their fill and finally broke and ran. By the time you regain your senses, twelve bandits lie dead or wounded, and the remaining eight are fleeing for their lives.

"Sir, we can catch them." Julia says. "You want us to finish them off?"

>Finish it. No survivors.

"There's been enough killing for today." You say. "Just round them up."

It's a relatively simple matter for the Stig to cut off the bandits' line of retreat, and a few not so veiled threats from Julia convinces them to surrender. The Growler carts all of them back.

"I hope this teaches you all that crime doesn't pay." You say to the captured bandits. The just sit there glumly and don't respond to you.

"The doctors at the hospice have already called for aid. The military should be here in a few hours." Dillon says, walking up to you. "It's fine. I 'll keep a eye on the prisoners until they're taken care of."

"Hey, if you ever need a steady line of work, you could always just roll with us." You say.

"Thank you for your offer, but I must decline." Dillon shakes his head. "What I do I do not do for money."

"Well, it was worth a shot. But if you ever need anything, like some help, a beer, or just to visit Julia, just swing by Castle Sturmfuhrer. You'll always be welcome there."

"I will keep that in mind." Dillon nods and turns to Julia. "Little one, heh, I probably should be calling you that anymore. You've grown so much since last I saw you."

"I... I don't mind..." Julia looks away, her cheeks reddening.

"If that's the case," Dillon laughs, "little one, I have a gift for you, to remember me by."

He then places a small, white crystal in Julia's hand.

"What is this?" Julia asks.

"Just a reminder that I'll always be there should you need me." Dillon says. "Now, off with you. I'm sure you have more important things to do than babysit an old man like me!"

Julia gives Dillon one more hug before you leave. For the entire trip, Julia has this big, stupid grin on her face, but you guess you can't fault her for that. It was like finding out your parents were still alive and were just hiding somewhere all this time.

However, you're left wondering just who the hell Dillon really was. In some ways, he reminded you a lot of Grandma, what with being old and experienced in the ways of the world, and possessing an odd charisma.

Well, maybe you'll find out someday. But for now, you're pretty damn tired, so you lean back and let your exhaustion overtake you.
