You are Ssen, a Lamia raised by a human Paladin who adopted you after killing the ones who birthed you. You are grown now, and Father has passed on. After a great deal of work, you have become a Paladin like your Father, and now take up his duties.

You are accompanied by your best friend from childhood, the insect druid Tricia; Mage, a magic user who ran away from his family of cannibal raiders known as the Ghouls (Yes, his name is Mage. It was his idea); Persephone, a 22-year old thief/ex-guerllia fighter (She goes by Peri), and Mari, a 13-year old prodigy scholar/now sniper, who has her mind and soul trapped within Peri's body; and Lea, a deeply religious musician/martial artist, trained by her father, a famous trainer for arena fighters, she's covered from her mouth down in bandages to hide the horrific state her body has become thanks to the 'cures' that saved her from cancer.

Your journey continues...

The City of the Crafters continues to be a giant horror show that never lacks for creativity. You snuck your way inside the Foundry, the facility where the Crafters did their advanced fleshcrafting, research into the art of fleshcrafting, and where they stored giant vats of 'spare material' for later use.

Inside you first met Nakai'ia. A 'Nurse-Assisstant-Guide' who was less of a person and more of a biological robot. Her entire body had been 'perfected' to make her the best at her duties. After a little bluffing, you were able to get her to take you inside the Foundry to meet with Doctor.

Doctor turned out to be less of a person, and more of an entire room. An operating room with a living ceiling. A mass of eyes, mouths, and plenty of dendrites and tentacles coming down from it. The largest being a 10ft tall, headless torso with six arms connected from the waist down to what resembles an umbilical cord that connects to the ceiling.

Doctor was cheerful and friendly. He was also upset at the realization that he hadn't noticed all the time that had passed and in that time some of the spare materials had spoiled. So, in a jovial manner, he proceeded to reprimand/correct Nakai'ia by 'restoring her original settings and then repairing her...with upgrades!' a process that requires three dendrites that have surgical implements growing out of them, and Nakai'ia screaming...a lot.

Then he turned to you and, addressing Mage, said that he would be taking the rest of the group and be using you to replace the lost materials.

Naturally, at this point in time, you felt it would be thoroughly necessary to express your distaste, and absolute loathing, of the City, the Crafters, the North, and the really BAD days that you've been having so far.

You're about to do a LOT of harm.
>>
>>26136109
The Doctor is the entire ceiling, right? That means he's HUGE, therefore he has HUGE GUTS. CLEAVE AND SMITE!

Not yet bro, we need to save nakai. She's screaming a lot.

I vote we constrict all three dendrites together, so they can't work any more. Also, we could saw them down from this position.
>>
>>26136109
I vote that once Nakai is safe, we try seeing his reaction to being told that all the Crafters are dead.

We should do that while making sure she's safe. Get to restricting and destroying the dendrites, while simultaneously telling him something like
"Okay, I was bluffing. The truth is the crafters are dead and we're a free association of peoples investigating your long dead civilization. Also, it might explode soon. My bad."
>>
>>26136109
Alright... For the time being, maybe we can still get out of this, diplomacy style. Gonna try my hand at writing.....

"WAIT! You don't have to do this anymore. All of the Crafters are dead and gone!"
~wait for him to say something like 'That's silly, they're immortal!~
"When's the last time you've seen a Crafter? Why do you think it's been so long? Why else would a group of people, not part of their empire, be wandering their city, carrying weapons? You're a logical thinker. THINK! What are the chances that they've just been avoiding you, or forgot about you and the silos? Now compare them to the chances that the CRAFTERS ARE DEAD!!!"
>Aaaand see his reaction to that.
>>
>>26136368
(Well, dendrite/villi/really thin tentacle, take your pick, but if you put a picture of a typical tentacle of any type, from any form of media, and then put one of these things next to it, you'd think that these are either malnourished, still forming, or some other body part. It just doesn't feel right calling them 'tentacles.' The Choir had tentacles. Doctor doesn't.)

Okay, so last night we rolled initiative and you got first. Pick your action. You can also give orders to the other Dawnchasers and make a battle plan, I have to go deal with cat vomit.

What's a battle plan for the other dawnchasers? Just have them hold the torso off?
Perhaps we should earmark Tricia for medical duties instead of fighting this battle, because we'll need to stabilize a surgery patient.

The doctor wants to recycle our companions to replace the spoiled flesh. This isn't DnD, Diplomacy doesn't let you do that shit.

Let's save Nakai'ia
>>
I don't think diplomancy is going to work at this point, he is literally programmed to be the Doctor of this place.

Anyway lets try to free Nakai'ia. Maybe shooting an arrow at the base of where the dendrites are coming from.

That's just asking to find out, Anon.
>>
I haven't had time to catch up with this for a couple of weeks, but thanks for running it Echo! Definitely my favorite quest.
>>
Rereading the last thread, it sounds like the Doc is going to turn Nakaia back to her original state then mindfuck her until she loses all her memory. We should allow him to do that while we fight his tentacles then kill him
>>
>>26137020
Let him turn her back to her original form, then kill the Doc. Sorry if I wasn't clear.
>>
>>26137020
I think she is currently at the original state, and is in the process of being mindfucked.
Which must be interrupted.
>>26136988
>>26136996
what's the worst that could happen?

Also, on the topic of nakai'ia's spider lower body: I bet that's one of the only mounts wide enough for us ourselves to ride. Think it would become tame outside of doc's influence?
>>
>>26136430
"WAIT! You don't have to do this anymore. All of the Crafters are dead and gone!" You say.

"Really? Again? Well, do you mean ALL of them, or just the majority of them due to another slave uprising or one of the Factions detonated another bio-bomb in the city?" Doctor says. "Well, that certainly means a lot more work for me. I'll send out some harvesters, and get to work! But, now I REALLY need that extra material, so behave now and rejoice, perhaps some of your tissue will be used in the new bodies of the Divine Ones! Gosh, you're lucky!"

So you'd have to sweep the operating curtain that's hiding Nakai'ia away with your tail, and then you'd get one shot at one of the three dendrites. There's scalpel, needle, and saw. Which one are you aiming for?

Or you can aim for the torso, or you can reach yourself up and jab beacon into the ceiling, or whatever else you want to do.
>>
>>26137080
>scalpel needle or saw
I can't choose all three?
Well, let's go for the saw first. It's the most potentially damaging.

Also, we should call somebody over to free her from her restraints. Peri and Mari have right proper blades. Let's put them on restraint removal duty, while the rest of them hold off the torso.
>>
>>26137080
needle, the saw and the scalpel can damage her body. The needle can damage her mind.
>>
>>26137080
Let's save Nakai'ia first, then we can stab the ceiling.

Take a whack at the saw I guess.

You whip the curtains away.

"You guys handle that!" You say. "I'll get Nakai'ia!"

You jab Beacon right at the needle dendrite.

Nakai'ia has already been 'reset' it looks like. The clear back pops open like a display case, the spine-disc things have been removed and you see a normal spine has been replaced. Her lower torso is the same, so they probably plan to just stick her back into that eight-legged platform thing. But her face has changed from that gummy-shape-shifting thing back to what must have been her original face.

Huh, she's a Crafter.

Anyway, 1d20+1 to hit the needle.

Oh, goody, time to make dinner.

Also, you can't reach the torso from your position and still keep the two dendrites wrapped.
>>
>>26139930

The needle dendrite goes very sluggish in your coil and the scalpel goes limp.

Lea keeps on fighting the torso.

The saw dendrite keeps trying to get free, but no dice.

Tricia does another double attack.

The Torso does another triple attack

The needle dendrite sluggishly tries to get free. No chance.

The platform tried to attack you again.

The scalpel dendrite just hangs there limply.

Peri squeezes the stone and swaps to Mari. Mari starts to figure out what exactly to do.

Mage shoots an ice blast at the torso.
>>
>>26140383
Well Mage's ice spell hits and works on the torso. But that's about all the good that happens. Lea and Tricia get hit, Tricia got slashed hard enough that one of her limbs reverts back to normal.

Also, the platform stabs you again.

Beacon throbs and vibrates in your hand. It's ready.

Tricia's remaining mantis blade arm slices through the torso's cord, blood spurts all over the room as the cord flops around wildly. The large multi-limbed torso falls to the ground with a crash.

"Heh...heheheh...get...hehe....get a hand!" Lea says. Tricia nods a dopey smile on her face.

The platform is still trying to attack you.

Laughing, and drooling a little, Peri clumsily slices off one of Doctor's hands.

Mage lazily points his staff at the Platform. "Hang on...ssssss...hang on." A stream of cold mist...something...sprays out of his staff.

Nakai'ia has long since passed out. Both due to stress, and the anesthetic effect of the blood.

Wiping away a little drool and keeping the giggling to a minimum you go over to the bed and lift Nakai'ia up enough so that the platform can open up and fit her inside. Nakai'ia makes a little grunting noise and flexes her jaws.

The platform skitters towards the exit. You follow, using Doctor's hand to re-open the door and taking it with you.

The door seals behind you and you take a deep breath of clean, cold, not-drugged air.

"Ughs..." Tricia moans. "Head...I see all around be with twinkly-sparkies."

Mage just lets out a long "heheheheheheh." as he stares up at the ceiling.

Peri and Mari are muttering to each other.

Lea leans against you and smiles. "This...this was a good flight. I think I need to sit down and possibly vomit." She stokes your tail. "Your tail is smoooth...but it feel like you're gonna shed...yeah...I need to..." She slips off you and lies on the ground.

"What?!" She gasps. "Wait...the Ascension Party actually got the vote? I thought that they were going to lose, that's at least what the criers would tell us." She shakes her head. "Ah well, maybe becoming a God is a good future policy. Although Daddy and I still favor the Eugenic Party. Better living through better breeding is a much more catchy slogan than One Party As God...please." She scoffs. "Alright, now beasts, base. Escort me home so I can get dressed properly, and see about my private Doctor Suite. Get me back in a Divine body not this...utilitatian nightmare...actually no. We're not going to Daddy's. We're going to my Uncle's. He's got a better Doctor there, what with his menagerie." She nods and looks at you all. "Well? Chop, chop! Your Physical, Moral, and Spiritual better and Master has given you a command! Obey!"

You and the other Dawnchasers share a 'This is really happening?' look.

"You...you DO know that your family and civilization are long gone and turned into a giant...thing. We're not lying about that." Mage says.

"Yeah, yeah. I heard, I heard." She rolls her eyes. "Not like the Crafters haven't been wiped out by our own hubris before. I mean I remember choking to death on my own blood from the plague that we created to try and stamp out the Orc Rebellions. Big deal. Eventually the planets will align again and release enough radiation...I'd explain what that is, but you're Base and Beasts so I'll spare your minds...and then the Restore Process will begin again at the Tower of Renewal." She shrugs. "Honestly, you Base get WAY to tied up in your concepts of mortality. So, how long has it been one hundred, two hundred years?" She grins. "Ah well, it'll be nice to have a proper God watching over us. Maybe nature will get things right for once and not need our divine guidance." She snaps. "Now come on! I have a home to get straightened up, my uncle to see...and while we're out I am SO going to go into Ras'ilia house and take BACK my favorite gown and a few of hers. Bitch owes me!"

"Umm...out of curiosity...where is the Tower of Renewal?" Lea asks.

"Eh, somewhere to the South." She says. "We recently moved it to keep it safe from the Orcs due to the uprisings. You can't miss the place, we have it surrounded by the Loyal Red Wolf Orc Tribe, and they maintain the great fires all around it. Showing the night that nothing can erase the immortal power of the Divine Crafters."

Tricia looks at you wide eyed. "Uhhh, this place, it's...it's not underground or anything hidden like that?"

"What? No!" She says. "Ugh, you Base...why should the Divine hide anything? The great vats are there for all to see."

You do remember seeing a lot of very thoroughly destroyed ruins on the Red Wolf Island when you were out hunting.

"Not anymore apparently." Peri says. "Look, kid...what is your name?"

"It's...ohh...oh shit. Fuck, see I KNEW storing my hippocampus was a dumb idea, but daddy insisted." She shrugs. "Nikai will do for now...but bow and say Praise Unto Thee when you say it."

>>
>>26143609
Well, we're on a mission for the Red Wolf tribe, I highly recommend that you follow us if you want to live. Also, it hasn't been a few centuries. It has been thousands of years. There's no-one left. No-one knows what Crafters are. Hell, WE only know because we're the first living ones in this city for Light-knows how long.

I don't want to be mean, or cruel, but I am completely honest when I say that there is no mention of Crafters, or anything like them, in any recorded history anywhere as far back as it goes.
>>
>>26143609
"Okay. You don't understand. The Crafter's have been dead for THOUSANDS of years. There is no tower of renewal. You are the last one. This city, the capital of your race, is a nightmarish wasteland of undead, ruled by an insane god. The so called 'Base' races inherited the world.

The hubris of your race destroyed you for good this time.

I'm sorry."
>>
>>26143609
"No. It's been thousands of years, your Father is gone, your Uncle is gone, Ras'ilia is gone, your entire civilization is GONE. Your favorite gown? GONE. You? Disassembled and experimented on and probably tortured regularly for thousands of years by an insane monster. The Red Wolf Tribe? Strongest tribe of the FREE orcs. That body? Only one you're likely to ever have from here on."

"The "Restore Process" clearly never happened. All that's left of your people? Their legacy? Shambling undead horrors made of ice, darkness, and ichor."

"So you have two choices: waste your life here in the darkness, or help us end the nightmare that has devoured your ENTIRE RACE."
>>
>>26143609
Wait a sec. A tower in the south, right?

We were born in a tower to the south.

Look a few minutes ago you were about to be diced up for spare parts by the doctor in there. He'd been using you as a programmed floor sweeper and receptionist for who knows how long and in that time some of the materials in the silos went bad. He was about to chop you up for spare parts, which apparently was to be followed by us.

The moment you step outside this building you'll be attacked and torn apart, with your head being forcibly added to the body of the nearest undead ice-god collective. The Orks from the Red Wolf tribe have been maintaining the wall of fire as planned but are using it to hold back the ice-undead. Their current camps surround ruins that look like they could have been destroyed centuries of even millenia ago. If your Tower of Renewal was there it's long been destroyed.

Right now we're trying to save the immoral souls of as many of your people as possible. Is there any chance you might be able to help us with that?

*Roll eyes*
I supposed we could grab a couple of your things before we get out of the city if its along the way.

>Wait, is she referring to the tower that I think she is referring to?
I was actually tempted to have it be Bright Tower, but then thought better of it. Although Bright Tower was now built by the Crafters, but it was just the equivalent of a summer home.

"You have massively underestimated the hubris of your race. It's already over. Has been for millennia." You say. "It's been thousands of years, your Father is gone, your Uncle is gone, Ras'ilia is gone, your entire civilization is GONE. Your favorite gown? GONE. You? What did Lea just tell us a couple of threads ago when we were dealing with someone annoying and uncooperative? Pretty sure it wasn't "twist the knife"
>>
So yeah, the gist of it seems to be
1) You were being used as a floor-sweeper, door opener, and receptionist for thousands of years, and were about to be used for spare parts
2) The Restoration process never happened, and never will because the Tower has long been destroyed
3) Your race have become undead zealots that exist to kill, convert, and absorb all sentient life
4) Follow the snake if you want to live
>>
>>26144026
She stares at you with a completely uncomprehending look on her face. She truly cannot understand how you, a Beast, can talk and how you can talk to her like that.

"Thank you!" Peri says as she yanks her blades back out of her hands. Nikai isn't a trained fighter, so they were fairly easy to extract.

"Hey!" She snaps. "You can't do that!"

You slip out from under her and she squeaks in horror at your movement and staggers back, nearly tripping over her own limbs.

"You...you can't do this! I am a Divine One. I'm better than you and you're supposed to know it! Also apparently, we're God now...so...so why aren't you being properly respectful? Don't you CARE what we do to you, your flesh, and your soul?"

"Actually, right now we're trying to save the immoral souls of as many of your people as possible. Is there any chance you might be able to help us with that?" You ask.

She sniffs. "Fine."

>>
>>26144041
"marvelous, we'll take all the help we can get.

Oh, as for your other question, the crafters have been dead longer than known history. Also, gods are all over the place nowadays. There's at least three down south, two of which are sealed and the third of which we're working on. This one up here, though, is just outright terrible. "We are NOT taking her with us." Tricia says.

You all round a corner. Huh, it looks like your 'friend' is heading straight to main storage. Lucky you.

"Well...maybe we can just let her know about the bomb and give her enough time to get out of the city?" Mari says. "She's one of the Crafters, right? The God thing wouldn't hunt her down...would it?"

"We have no idea how that thing thinks." Mage says. "Nor do I ever want to know."

You follow Nikai's path, and some old signs and you end up in central storage. Giant vats about the size of small buildings loom in the room, all of them covered and with runic script etched all over their sides.

There's a rather nasty smell in here though, just as was said, it seems a few of these vats have had the magic expire and they've spoiled and rotted.

"Where's the kid?" Peri asks.

Mage shrugs as he checks another vat. "Dunno. She ran past here, so...shit, another one rotted."

"Shouldn't you open the vats to check?" Tricia asks.

"Not really." Mage says. "I can smell it easily enough, and failed magic is failed magic."

"Three vats. And the last one is just because the magic failed less than a week ago. Good timing on our part." Mage says.

"Would rotten flesh work?" Peri asks. "I mean, there's living stuff in that, right?"

"I have no idea." Mage says. "But do we want to risk another mistake like what happened with the fire?"

"We should do what we know works first, if we have an option to do something that works let's do that BEFORE going to our normal craziness." Tricia says.

"What exactly is your plan Mage?" Lea asks. "You said you had one."

"Yeah. It's pretty simple, this stuff can survive outside the vats for about a day or two. Maybe longer, if the stuff that hasn't spoiled yet is any indication." Mage says. "It won't exactly be pretty, but some Ghoul Spells can turn this stuff from giant vats to something that could fit inside a barrel, like the ones we saw outside, and I know I saw a few here and there. I shrink the stuff down, we load it up in the barrels. They'll still be heavy though, so we roll them back to the Sad things, pop them open and then get out of there. They use the living flesh, and hopefully that works, and then we get the staff and blow this place to the Darkness."

"I just had a bad thought." Mari says.

"No." Tricia says. "No, you didn't. For the love of His Light Mari, don't complicate things further. Just get a barrel and let's go."

"Go ahead, Mari." Lea says.

"How do we know that the Joy Things are the only Sad Things in the City? This place is pretty big." Mari says.
>>
>>26145228

"You're not wrong. A city this size would have a substantial population, and if Nikai's ramblings were any indication, it was only a slim majority of them that were in favor of the 'God' plan. Maybe if we opened the doors and called them all here?"
>>
>>26145228
"Mari, I'll get to you in a second, but Mage wouldn't that barrel be very heavy and dense? Now Mari, why'd you have to go and jinx everything?"
>>
>>26145228
"Yeah, that's a major concern. I was thinking we could just... attract all the sad things to us. We're alive, we have light and warmth, that's what they want, right? So we just have to show it off. From the rooftops. Loudly."
>>
>>26145228
"That's true. But you see, we have only a limited amount of ... meat and even more limited time. So we will save who we can. I guess this was what my talked to me about. 'The hard part.'"
>>
>>26145228
"That was the part of the plan we didn't figure out. We need a way to attract the Sads but only the Sads. And we should probably find Nikai before someone else finds her."
>>
>>26145228
"So you are you saying that we should bring the creatures here instead? Lure them here with some sort of...beacon?"
>>
>>26145228
"While we're thinking, I really think we should find where Nikia went. I have a feeling she'd probably find a Headhunter, or worse-yet one of the wolves...
>>
"Mari, I'll get to you in a second, but Mage wouldn't that barrel be very heavy and dense?" You ask.

"Hence why I picked a barrel and not a box." Mage says. "Barrels can be rolled. Plus Lightmare is in the lobby eating wicker furniture as we speak. If it can pull a wagon with us in it, three heavy barrels shouldn't be too much for it."

"Alright. Now Mari, why'd you have to go and jinx everything?"

Mari shrugs. "Sorry, it popped in there and I couldn't help it."

"You're not wrong. A city this size would have a substantial population, and if Nikai's ramblings were any indication, it was only a slim majority of them that were in favor of the 'God' plan. Maybe if we opened the doors and called them all here? Lured them here with some sort of beacon?" You say.

"Are you forgetting that we are RIGHT across from the Cathedral?" Tricia says. "Headhunters, Hounds, and the God itself right across the square?"

"Good point." You say and then sigh. "But in the end we have only a limited amount of...meat and even more limited time. So we will save who we can. I guess this was what my talked to me about. 'The hard part.'" You shake your head. "We'll do what we can, and we should probably find Nikai before someone else finds her."

"Okay." Mage smiles as he finds some storage barrels in a corner. "And these have...old potatoes in them...for some reason I don't want to know." He says. "I'm gonna need some help getting these ready and putting the flesh in here. Ssen, if you want to go look for Nikai, you can...but only take one more person for help...why would anyone keep a hat in...never mind...everyone else help me with these things and we can maybe divvy the stuff up into six barrels and make it a tad lighter."

Do you want to just rush through this and stay with Mage, go look for Nikai alone, or take someone with you. The Storage Room is a safe place, anyone you leave here will be fine as they prep the flesh for travel.

Has anything good every come from us bragging or attempting to verbally put others in their place? Us almost bragging to Sideways and giving up as much info as we got would have been bad if it hadn't got outvoted, but the second I turn my back for a while we pull this shit?

God, no matter how many time Lea corrects us when we're slacking as a paladin, we repeat the same mistakes again in a matter of days.
>>
>>26145535
Who does the paladin save? All of them.
Take the third option that will probably result in a horrible sequence of events that will have drastic consequences.
My vote is to actually set up a timed event that will go off and alert all of the Sad Things, after, say, a couple hours. In that time we grab the Staff and bug out. Or we could probably even use it as a distraction, going in once all the nasty things go to the Silos to see what all the commotion is...
How much stuff do we have that can be used as a fuse? And how much stuff for fireworks and other stuff do we have? I know we still have some oil bombs...
>>
>>26145632
hey, I keep saying quit with the braggy stuff every time it happens. I don't know why, but some guys REALLY like bragging.
>>
>>26145632
It has been ages since our dragon ego has been so agitated and she did call us an animal along with claiming divinity when gods have been fucking with our head for the majority of this quest. Not to mention we're in the north, it's cold, we're soon to be shedding and she thought to command us even after we saved her ass.
>>
>>26145534
You know what we should do?

Take the flesh elsewhere, and THEN beacon as many joys as possible there.

"I'll go fetch her. Gotta apologize before she gets eaten by a... we should start naming these things."
>>
The doctor mentioned Harvesters.... could we use those as carriers for Living Stuff that the city population needs?
>>
>>26145761
I bet Nikki could command them, or we could with the Doctors hand.
>>
>>26145761
I was thinking that mage's plan could be to make a bunch of primitive walkers to go out and FIND the sads.

You know, fight abomination with abomination.
>>
>>26145761
Sounds like a good idea
>>
>>26145780
>I was thinking that mage's plan could be to make a bunch of primitive walkers to go out and FIND the sads.
>You know, fight abomination with abomination.

That's possible, but then you have to make sure that the constructs find Sads without getting jumped by other Things. Time consuming and dangerous.

Mage has the most efficient and safest idea that will help most, if not all, of the Joy Things. Also, you haven't found any other Sad Things, so they might be the last survivors.

But you're not certain...you can't be 'certain.'
>>
>>26145761
>The doctor mentioned Harvesters.... could we use those as carriers for Living Stuff that the city population needs?

For clarificiations' sake:
They weren't Things. Harvesters was a job title.
>>
>>26145889
well, we'll take the cargo elsewhere, that's for sure. Here is NOT the ideal distribution point. Maybe we'll summon them to the tower of dominion right before we break the staff and signal the bombing.

Go after nakai'ia
>>
>>26145889
Say a prayer to the Light while going to find Nikia, then.

"Light, guide me to those who need help in this city. Guide those who need help in this city to me."
>>
>>26145732
Terry also thought to command us even after we just saved his ass. Lea scolded us when we prioritized putting him in his place over comforting him, and we acknowledged our mistake and apologized. That wasn't that long ago and here we are pulling the same shit.

Not saying we should have pretended to be subservient to her, but we could have tried simply explaining what we were currently doing and why it was necessary instead of being like "I've fought gods before, I'm going to kill the god that is all that remains of your civilization, and then I'm going to kill some more gods! Bwahaha!"
>>
>>26145956
you just keep doin' what yer doing. Vital service and all that.
>>
>>26145956
To be fair, a lot of us were saying that was a bad idea, or just giving alternatives. It's just that this time the worst possible suggestion got picked.
>>

"I'll go fetch her. Gotta apologize before she gets eaten by a... we should start naming these things." You sigh. "Light, guide me to those who need help in this city. Guide those who need help in this city to me."

You head out and look around the Foundry halls to see if you can find any trail of Nikai. Thankfully her trail is easy to follow, there's dust and other signs of age in here, and her platform's feet make distinct trails.

The only problem is that you slightly lose the trail when you go upstairs to the administration floor. There's less dust and less trail. So you can either head towards a sign that's labeled 'Showroom' or 'Evaluations.'
>>
>>26146083
okay, let's get into her head. She's running and looking for help. There'd be more guard-y types in a showroom than an evaluation room, right? So she'll go to the showroom.

Showroom it is. Tourism is go!

Nah, place is brimming with magic, and you can't pick out her individual heat signature from the other rooms that are like Doctor. Which you have been avoiding. You don't want to know why Cafeteria also has a living ceiling, and a solid mass where the kitchen should be.

>>26146155
>Also do we smell anything?
Flesh, bronze, rust, dust, and death.
>>
>>26146183
What about the doorknobs?
>>
>>26146183
my vote remains showroom.

Also maybe we'll go back to the cafeteria later and try to make the kitchen work, if we're feeling adventurous.

You go into the showroom. It's a large room, there's some upright glass display cases and a model diorama of the City in the center.

Whatever kind of beings that were in the display cases have been long dead and turned into rot and then that turned into dust.

Nikai is there, sadly staring at the model. She looks up at you and starts to look afraid for a moment, and then collapses into defeat.

"Fine, go ahead. Kill me." She sighs. "The world has gone, savages and beasts run rampant, and the greatest civilization are those Base Birdfolk from across the sea. And even they've allowed themselves to breed into..." She snarls. "Filth. I remember what they used to look like. Regal and resplendent in their feathers. Not like that harpy trash, but elegant...but that damn ape genome is..." She shakes her head. "The first Lamia looked NOTHING like you, but fuck enough humans and that toxic plague they call their genetic makeup will rot your divinity, or regality, or dragon...inity, whatever. Either way, people always end up looking like them. THey have crap brains, crap bodies, crap everything, but they can make sex enjoyable and a genome that's most dominant than..." She gestures to a window at the Cathedral outside. "I guess the Entropic Party was right...time ruins all things." She shakes her head. "So...what now? I won't go live in this world. It's filthy and unclean and I'd rather die. I'd rather all of YOU die first." She narrows her eyes. "But..." She looks back to the map. "That's not going to happen now. Is it?"

"How do you know about the Phoenix Empire?" You ask.

(cont)
>>
I bet there's some shit in the showroom.

We need to get a camera. We need those to be invented.
>>
>>26146830
She touches the model and pushes it. Your eyes widen. It's not a model. It's...something more. The model moves and shifts, you see the tundra Orc Camps, the UKF, the Citadel Dome, and the desert. She pushes the diorama to the side and the map continues to move, you see the Phoenix Empire. It's pretty big, four big cities, a bunch of little towns, you see what must be the Silks, and their tent cities, and the huge mountains that are behind them.

The map continues to roll and you see another land unlike any you've seen before. It's still land, but you don't know those mountains, those plains, those cities in strange shapes and buildings, and more and more. Then it goes to a large amount of water, and you see the UFK again. There IS land to the East. Plenty of it too, with unknown civilizations.

Nikai brings it back to the ruined City of the Crafters. "This was once all ours. You live upon our corpse and dine upon our scraps. We became God, and even then...we accomplished nothing. It all turns to that." She gestures to the dust in the display cases. "It's not fair...it should have been YOU...or some other Base race that was destroyed." She sneers and then sniffs and uses one of her hands to wipe a rag across her three eyes. "Fuck you, and fuck time."
>>
>>26146839
"If it makes you feel any better, I'm probably going to outlive everyone I care about too."
>>
>>26146839
"What I'm trying to do here is save that divinity. In the end, you are where you are. But you have a choice, right here and right now. You can let things get worse, or you can allow others to get better. You might be surprised what humans can do with a bit of allowance and help. I also have a feeling I know what might have ended your civilization."
>>
>>26146830
>>26146839
"Well, there is one who survived. You. If you truly want to revive you race's glory days, why are you moping and in here. Help me. Help me so i can help you. What do you say?"

Time to give her a kick up the pants and the spirit to go on.
>>
>>26146839
Can we carry that map?
>>
>>26146839
"Hah, yeah, time's kind of a jerk. Sorry for going off on you earlier, you're the one who should be more upset right now, what with all this.

I really think you should consider living, though. There are still good things out there. Why compound tragedy with more tragedy?
>>
>>26146839
"It may not be fair, but your life is the last of your kind. Please try to make it count. We could use all the help we can get."
>>
>>26146839
>>26146900
"Beyond that, here and now, there are the souls of those who did not join in...to whatever it is that is in the city and surrounding Ice. I have found a way to save some of them from their undeath and continue their cycle, if you'll help.

I need a way to call them to particular places without calling the Things outside. I know of one area where they are, of you can help me find more."
>>
>>26146839
"So, things have been getting more human-like over time? Fascinating. We don't have records going nearly that far back."
>>
>>26146839
"But you're still alive aren't you? You can rebuild and show the world that the Crafters were even better than your ancestors. That they had no need to commit the cruelties and destruction that they did. The orcs have lived with the horrors invented by the god your race became and have emulated the worst aspects of your kind. Please consider."
>>
"I'm sure we could find a place for you away from all us 'filthy degenerates'. I'd prefer no more people die than need be.
I know a nice glowing tower out in the boonies, for instance."
>>
>>26146839
Time ruins all only if all stands still. And all never stands still. So time only ruins those people and those things who try to stay the same. Change is inevitable. And yes, it's scary. When I learned that I am functionally immortal, I wondered how time would affect me. I might go crazy. I might see everything I know turn into dust around me. I'm certainly going to lose everything dear to me, one day. Be it in ten years or ten thousand. But! I'll only lose everything dear if I never find new things to cherish. The world keeps turning whether we like it or not. I'll just learn to keep turning myself, too.

C'mon. Let's get out of here. Time can only hurt you if you hold onto it.
>>
>>26147105
that's actually pretty good.

>>26147133
So... cliche, though. And all that talking about ourselves.

>>
>>26147146
a bit too much talking about ourselves, yeah, that's my main problem.

So... requires editing.

She scowls and shakes her head. "I...I can't." She sighs. "Aside from the fact that I'm currently trapped in this form, I just..." She looks at the map. "What would you have me do? You expect me to be some advisor, or living record of my age?" She shakes her head. "I am of the Divine."

"I'm trying to save that Divinity." You say. "That God of yours, there are the souls of those who did not join in...to whatever it is that is in the city and surrounding Ice. I have found a way to save some of them from their undeath and continue their cycle, if you'll help. I need a way to call them to particular places without calling the Things outside. >>26147247
"The Orcs have been living with the horrors that your race created, and have ended up emulating some of the worst aspects of YOUR civilization. You can help this." You say.

She shrugs and looks out the window. "Why should I care? I didn't vote for the God plan, and the rest are just Base or Beasts. They don't even have souls." She looks at you. "Or maybe not..." She sneers. "Probably stole those from us, somehow...or a dragon thing." She shakes her head. "You're asking me to live in a world that repulses me. I don't..." She sniffs again. "I want to live with my Daddy and Mommy. Visit Uncle and go to University and date Par'tall when he finishes his internship." She scowls at the world and then at you, tears dripping from her eyes. "I wish you had let me die." She's biting her lip and she looks sick when she says it. It's not that she doesn't mean it, but this isn't like the Purist Boy, this girl literally has nothing, no idea of what to do, no skill set that matches this world, and the only things that she has to hold on to are about to be incinerated. She's bitter and scared, and unlike you, or the Dawnchasers, or any of the people you've met who've been worth a damn. There's no one to even pretend that they care for her, and even if you and the Dawnchasers tried. There's no part of her that wouldn't believe you to be Base or Beasts. She's not broken. She's as irrevocably warped as the flesh she's in.
>>
>>26147178
I don't even particularly agree with that aspect.

Advising her to deal with the loss of her entire species by trying to "keep moving" sounds too close to advocating denial or escapism. Even when we had to re-kill our mother, we had to face the fact at some point. We couldn't just move on.

>>
>>26147282
well, normally I'd advocate a period of mourning, yes, but she literally needs to keep moving for like, a day. Two days. Or she'll explode.
>>
You try to coil up next to her, but she almost involuntarily flinches away. But she lets you near her, but she recoils at your attempt to touch her. You let your hand drop and just stay next to her, watching the diorama of the world slowly turn.

"I couldn't have let you die. You just said you wanted to live. Not live here, but to live." A pause. "Tell me something, do the Crafters know where souls come from?" You ask.

"From our Divine Flesh." She says.

It's late though, let me know when we're on 9.
>>
>>26147427
"If thats true then why do I have one? I have never met a crafter, nor has my mother, and I have seen my mother's soul. And I know I have one. It has been proven to me beyond a shadow of a doubt."
>>
>>26147427
We're still on 8, for the time being.

>>
>>26147456
Might also want to bring up the known fact the souls can be stored in gemstones, and continue to exist independent of any flesh whatsoever.
>>
>>26147427
hmm. Grief counseling is tricky. And we're still completely untrained. I feel like we missed a paladin boot camp at some point.

"So, there were no souls before the crafters? How did they come about? Why couldn't others get their own souls?"

I hope convincing her other folk have souls might make her want to live in the world a bit more. I hope that is the right way to go about this.
>>
"If thats true then why do I have one? I have never met a crafter, nor has my mother, and I have seen my mother's soul. And I know I have one. It has been proven to me beyond a shadow of a doubt." You say.

"You're of Dragon Flesh." She says. "Dragons are...different." She says.
>>
>>26147503
Yeah, they're arrogant fuckers aren't they? "The Be All And End All Of Creation" in their own minds.

Tell me, you say you are of the Divine. What is that? I know of Dragons and Trolls and Rocs and Leviathans, but what is the Divine? And don't just say 'It's Divine" because that's just silly.
>>
>>26147503
"And what of the apes? Birds? Orcs, even. They all seem to be their own people, with their own souls.
Look, I'm not trying to bother you about theology. I'm just trying to say that there are people out there. They're not the ones you knew, you'll never be able to replace them. But they're people, and they might not all be as bad as you think.
>>
>>26147427
"Well then, wouldn't my soul come from my own flesh by that logic? Same as with any human, or elf, or mer? Because make no mistake, I have a soul. I've seen others who had souls as well... but I don't like to remember the circumstances."
>>
>>26147503
"Then why do humans have souls?1 I have seen those captured in gems, felt their cries in a dragon's prison. Why do elves have them? The Orcs? Why do those of the Phoenix do? No, your flesh is no more divine then mine. It is merely different. If you were truly divine your kin wouldn't be slaves to the Land Spirit they became part of. They would truly be gods. Instead of the monsters they are in the Cathedrel."
>>
Wait, she expressed dismay at being trapped in that shape. Couldn't Mage help with that?
>>
>>26147503
"And the humans whose souls I've seen trapped in gems, or bound to bits of wall by the so-called "god" Citadel?"

"No doubt, your civilization did great things. But I hope you'll give us a chance. We're not the same, and we're not perfect. Light knows we're FAR from perfect. But we're working on it."

Then perhaps >>26147497

Or something like it.
>>
"So, there were no souls before the crafters or Dragons? How did they come about? Why couldn't others get their own souls?" You ask.

She shrugs. "They weren't real souls. That's what the Truth of the Flesh has told us." She shakes her head.

"Tell me, you say you are of the Divine. What is that? I know of Dragons and Trolls and Rocs and Leviathans, but what is the Divine? And don't just say 'It's Divine" because that's just silly."

"Then...I...I guess I'm silly." She shakes her head. "Only the Divine have the ability to understand the Divide." She shrugs and moves the map to see the Ice Sea.

"Are you familiar with the concept of the Light?" You ask.

She frowns and looks up at you and eyebrow raised. "Wait...that cult still exists?" She asks and then laughs. "Change is inevitable? Charity and Forgiveness are Virtues? That slave-loving nonsense? Is that the same Light?"

"Tell me more about this Truth of the Flesh. It sounds eerily similar to what a lot of the land spirits are selling to ensnare and enslave what you'd call the "base" races."

The fact that the Light has been pretty consistent in it's teachings for thousands of years tells me that it's probably got someone or something maintaining that consistency.

"But I've seen souls. I've seen human souls, sealed in gems, and metal, and rock. They're tangible things - You can reach out and touch them.

And I honestly believe that anything which has a soul deserves a chance. You feel like you've had your chance taken away, and, well, I'd like to say I know what you're going through, but I don't. When I came to this city, I decided very quickly that I didn't like the Crafters, but this has provided me with some much needed perspective - Just because a few of you went too far doesn't mean that you deserve what's happened here.

But remember, it's always darkest just before the dawn. I've seen people who don't think they have anything worth living for, and there's one thing I know: They're always wrong. There's *always* something worth living for. Even if it's just a tiny thing like a warm rock to lie on, or something huge like a family. Just think about what you want, and on the way to getting it, you'll find a myriad of other things that make you want to keep going."

Still rather uplifting
>>
Do you guys think that mentioning that some people whom she knew could be skittering about in the ruins as undead, or that her loved ones' souls are being held by the land spirit could motivate her to try to help? Or would that make things worse?

She seems to be closest to regular people in the 21st century (plus some institutionalized racism and superiority) college student in mentality. And perhaps not the most upstanding or studious type either. How do you motivate someone like that to pick up arms and become an Adventurer after she discovered that she may have no high standard of living or loved ones left?

perhaps add on that you touched crafter souls as well and they felt no different.

She scowls. "It didn't out survive the Crafters." She sneers. "Fine. I am of the Crafters Divine. My flesh is the holiest of creations and the grandest of all things. I WONT let my civilization be BEATEN by a silly little slave-fucking cult!" She turns to look at you. "I will hate you until your grave is dust, and all that remember you are buried. I will be the last one to ever know you existed and I will DANCE where you are buried!" She leaves the room. "Now COME ON....we get to the Tower of Obedience we can call the Base and Beasts and cleanse them from MY city. But FIRST we stop by my Uncle's menagerie to FIX me. And I'm KEEPING my Platform, it's the ONE thing here that's TRULY loyal. "

You swear you hear the platform chirp in response.

Okay, so...spite is probably not the best reason to keep living, but beggars can't be choosers.

"Given the fact that I'm functionally immortal, let's hope it's a long and healthy hate."

We'll swing by your uncle's on the way out of town, and pick you up a... er... What did crafters have, in their normal state? I've never seen one."

Ohmigosh! Lea is going to be PUMPED to hear this! I have an antithesis! I'm so happy!

Jesus Christ.

So she's only carrying on due to her massive hateboner for everything the world has become.

Also, I don't think she's going to like that our plan is to break the staff and nuke the city.

I can just see it now: 1000+ years down the line, that psychotic hatred becomes psychotic hatred with a really bizarre affection mixed in.

Is there even a term for that?

An entire race, in fact.

Though in all seriousness, through the facade of hatred, there seems to be some degree of acceptance there.
>>
Wait, does she know that the city is going to be destroyed soon?
>>
>>26147809
"Well, it IS your city, but it's sort of, er, going to explode. didn't I mention?

We can still visit your uncle's, but, you know, let's not take too long."
>>
>>26148095
She's decided that life is worth living for the sole purpose of spiting the world, and primarily, Ssen. That's going beyond acceptance.
>>
oh this is perfect, we are heading to the Staff, to cleanse the souls of those who remain. At least I think thats where the Tower of Obediance is.
>>
"Wonderful, I'll look forward to you outliving me. We can play card games as you wait for me to die, let's hope it's a long and healthy hate." You say.

"Now, we'll swing by your uncle's on the way out of town, and pick you up a... er... What did crafters have, in their normal state? I've never seen one."

"No, we're going to Uncle's FIRST." She snaps. "I KNOW what I'm doing, and it won't take long. Stupid fucking dragon-bastard cultist spawn..." She mutters as she walks by you.

"It's okay. I know you're only trying to uphold the pride of your people. I forgive you. I'm just happy you're still alive and well, and that you've found a reason to go on living. That was all I wanted for you."

Her response is to flip you off.

You both head back to the Storage Room and see a note, the others have the barrels ready and are waiting for you in the lobby.

Heading there you see that they've cobbled together a crude cart, and there's six barrels in there.

"Hey, so she's with us now?" Mage says.

"Hmph, I suppose all of you are members of that Cult as well?" She says.

"What cult?" Tricia asks.

"That stupid 'Light' thing." Nikai snaps. "It was stupid back in my day and I bet it still is!"

"His Light shined all the way back during the Crafter's time?" Lea's eyes shoot up and she laughs a little. "Oh, oh that's marvelous!"

"Oh spare me." She grumbles.

Lea looks at you and you wink back at her.

Mage peeks his head out the door and then closes it again. "We must have been out longer than we thought." He says. "It's nearly dawn. We wait an hour or two and it'll be daylight."

"Morning prayer and meditation." Nikai says.

>>
>>26147809
"You kinda sound like a dragon I know."
>>
>>26148156
"The orcs should still be there, right?" Tricia asks.

"They said three days." Peri says.

You all wait an hour. Nikai is at least impressed with Lightmare. She goes on about how NIghtmares were Crafter creations and how they improved the Tundra Hind, Horse, and this animal that is probably extinct, all in one creature.

Lea is amused, and a little saddened by Nikai's new passion for living. However, she's hoping that it actually works for her. "The Speaker Grant was one of His Light's greatest prophets and wrote many teachings, and he was famously known for his day long rants about how much he hated His Light." She smiles. "The opposite of Love is Indifference. That man who ran Shadow Company was a man who had no faith and was the stronger for it." She grins and you see her eye crinkle. "Nikai hates His Light with such a passion that I don't doubt she'll become one of His most learned scholars. Maybe she can go plot His downfall with Old One." She giggles. "Oh that's marvelously awful."

Dawn comes and Peri scouts out to confirm that, indeed, the Hounds and Headhunters have all gone into the Cathedral to sing with the Choir.

You open the doors and, with Nikai as a guide, quietly move Lightmare through the city.

"First stop my Uncle's house. You wait outside, and I'll go in and come back out." She says.

"Can't we wait inside?" Mage asks.

"No. No room for the horse, and I'm not letting you or the Orc Beasts defile more of my ruined home than you have to." She says.

"So, you're okay with us bombing the City and the Ice God?" Peri asks.

Nikai shrugs. "Fuck the Ice God, I didn't vote for it. As for the City, eh, it's a dump now. Screw it all. I'm going to fix my body, grab some of uncle's jewelry, and get the hell out of here after you fail at doing your Light Cult crap."

yeah, we're cleansing the souls at the tower of obedience, which is where the staff is.
This may or may not put the staff directly into our new super enemy's hands.
Let's be careful with that. And letting her get her hands on the doctor, careful with that too. No need for her to go all A-team on our ass with meat.

Reminds me of a Hindu story.

Basically, one way to achieve escape from the cycle of death and rebirth is to keep God constantly in mind. So, of course, there one day existed a atheist who was so sure of the non-existence of God that wherever he went, whatever he did, he constantly reminded himself and others that there is no such thing as God right up until his deathbed.

Guess who he saw next?

>>
>>26148487
The happy ending includes backstabbing.
In fact, it includes gaining a new person in our life whose entire life purpose is backstabbing us.

And then playing cards with that person.
