Only a few days behind Moruk, the part from God Eata arrived. The female trolls were very pleased to see Gronk, presenting him with the new cubs that had been born. Most were male, though there was a female cub as well. Every single one of the crippled humans had died or been eaten on the trip. The female was also dead, from child birth. Gronk’s son by her, however, was perfectly healthy. Half troll and half human, he was a strange thing. His arms were too long in proportion to his chest for a human, and his hair was too thick and long for a human. His teeth were far longer and his nails were black and claw like. He had once fallen and cut his head, only for the wound to seal after less than an hour. The most disturbing thing about him was his eyes though. Neither human nor troll, they lacked irises completely, being merely pools of black.

The trolls that had been scouting the mountain returned as well, giving little information that wasn’t already know from other scouting missions. There was a lot of loose rock in the territory, dumped by the dwarves as they cleared their mine. There was an abundance of animals, as the dwarves had rarely hunted. With the scouts returned and the tribe back together, Gronk felt more comfortable sending trolls out into the world. He dispatched his two deputies, Moruk and Ragnar, in opposite directions. Moruk was sent, with his goblins and a few trolls, to scout out the defences of the city of Märlas. Ragnar was sent North to find any other clans or living beings further into the mountains, with an escort of three bull trolls. Tink-Tank said he was going to start forging the first set of armour, and spent two hours measuring Gronk. The marked one wondered what to do with the black wearing, knife using human.

Provide something beneficial (i.e. loyalty, training in Rogue techniques, etc.) or else we rip him apart and ravenously eat him.

We can coerce through fear, but I still think earning loyalty would be preferable. Given how we just killed his comrades, that would be somewhat tricky.

I like that training part, trolls wouldn't have to much use for it, but train goblins, especially Moruk's bunch, into elite scout/stealth units, for gathering intel on the other troll clans and the human city

Gronk was no fool, and could tell that his ash touch could be a terribly potent weapon if he could truly control it. He also sensed that the power could be used to do other things than disintegrate the surroundings. However, no matter neither how often he practised or how hard he focussed, Gronk was unable to stop it from simply burning through everything connected to him. He was able to focus it in one place, but it still leaked out everywhere else as well. When he eventually decided to focus on other things, he found that his stone magic was now even more powerful. He tested out the depth of his control on the great statue of him, using his words to smooth and carve it into a more accurate rendition of himself. The dwarves were made to bow down to it whenever they passed through the great hall, and all their weapons were piled at its feet. As part of their worship, Gronk had all families search the mine for precious metals and deposit them beneath the statue. One of the things uncovered was the gold bars taken long before the invasion. Many of the things offered were shiny discs, that the dwarves called ‘coins’. One if the old leaders explained their function to Gronk, but he still thought them unnecessary. If you want something, you take it. Trading is temporary, you just give someone something until you dominate or destroy them, then you take it back.

Tink-Tank and his underlings completed their first breast plate for Gronk. It was a tight fit, but was easy to get out of. It had an extended neck, to guard against decapitations. Tink-Tank’s main worry was how fast Gronk grew and how much larger than the other trolls he already was. If Gronk defeated a champion and grew, no-one would be big enough to inherit his armour, except possibly Moruk. Tink-Tank also mentioned that they didn’t have much metal ore, though there was some in one of the mine shafts.

Gronk found the new armour to his liking and commended the little goblin for his sterling work. His next act was to command all dwarves capable of swinging a pick to mine metal. He had Tink-Tank draw up an estimation of the amount of metal in the vein, before telling the dwarves that terrible consequences would befall them if less was handed over. As he left Tink-Tank to his work, another small goblin approached him; it was Tak-Tak. The little scribe had been all but forgotten since he returned from the disastrous attempt at diplomacy with the dwarves. He had been left in the temple while all the other goblins had marched to war. As Gronk now spoke almost fluent common and had Ragnar to translate any words he didn’t know, the little scribe seemed redundant. But now he had found a way to be useful again. He had spent long hours thinking on how to please Gronk, before realising he could do something not even Ragnar could. He had been unable to act on his plan until they had come to the dwarf mine, where there were tools for a scribe. He had spent the journey to the mine talking with the escort trolls about Gronk’s deeds and history before Tak-Tak was enslaved. The culmination of his labours was in his hand. It was a thick bundle of papers, bound together with string. Gronk didn’t understand what written word was, but after Tak-Tak explained the concept he saw its power. These words would stay forever, because the paper never forgets. Tak-Tak said he could produce more copies and keep writing about Gronk, if he could only have a few underlings and a wife. Tak-Tak wished for his old authority, but new that Tink-Tank was now more useful. But he could get a little of it back at least.

Sorry it's taking a while, I had to grab something to eat.

With a large amount of ore mined by the dwarven slaves, Gronk decided it was time to try something a little different. Most of the axes used by the trolls had been broken during the fight, causing them to revert to their claws. Gronk knew that if they continued like this, it would be very difficult to teach them to use weapons later on. So he had Tink-Tank cease work on armour and spend time working out how to make weapons for his bull trolls. Swords and axes would be too complicated, but he had other ideas. A spiked metal club or metal blades affixed to be affixed to troll claws. He also had Meldan begin training the goblins that still remained in the mine on how to creep and avoid detection. The training must be going well, as he hadn’t seen any of them for days.

Tak-Tak and his goblin apprentices hadn’t been seen for some time either, as they were shut up in their workshop through day and night. The book of Gronk was coming along speedily. Gronk and Tak-Tak were talking about the battle at the gate, so it could be added to the book, when Moruk returned. He marched into the great hall and bowed to the statue, the trolls and goblins who accompanied him doing likewise. Then he bounded up the steps and bowed to Gronk. Gronk pushed the papers out of the way and embraced his heir. Moruk had grown even in the few weeks he had been away, but still didn’t come up to Gronk’s shoulder. As soon as Tak-Tak had left, they began to talk of Märlas. The cunning one confirmed that the walls and gate were in abysmal repair, but couldn’t comment on the military defences. He had done his best to spot those on the walls, but there was little he could determine their efficiency from a distance.

We use limbs to move faster, but ultimately our high level of regeneration lends to a naturally high defense regardless.

I would argue that weapons should be as highly damaging as possible. I liked the idea of adding metal blades to troll claws, because it would make even more dangerous weapons while retaining the 4-legged running speed. I can also support blunt weapons, since clobberin' is what we love to do.

When Moruk had eaten and his warriors had bedded down, Gronk introduced his heir to Vulug, the half breed. Moruk was both horrified and fascinated, examining his new brother carefully. It was clear that he could be made useful, as he could almost pass for human. At the moment, he only spoke the language the female trolls had taught him, trollish. Gronk decreed that both him and Moruk would learn the common tongue, studying under Tak-Tak. The book of Gronk was important, but it could wait. Moruk already spoke a smattering of common but was far from fluent. Moruk’s goblins were sent to Meldan to join the others in training. Tink-Tank brought out his new weapons, which were sharp elongated claws. They were given to one of the bulls to test, and the results were favourable. His fighting style changed not at all, and yet attacks would be several times as deadly. Gronk suggested producing wooden shields with metal rims and spikes, so trolls could charge and be defended at the same time, and Tink-Tank scurried off to test the idea out.

Gronk also spent days with the ex-leaders of the dwarves. They were broken beings, unable to raise any resistance to Gronk’s demands. With his two sons now studying under Tak-Tak, Gronk decided to try and use yet another sort of magic Just before the golden champion of the dwarves had died, he had thrown a bolt of lightning from his hand at Gronk. Gronk had dodged and proceeded to eat the dwarf, so now he would see if he could wield the power. For hours he experimented with the magic, using his words to the extent of his ability. But he was unable to conjure it, whether because the magic wasn’t his or because he couldn’t access it he knew not. He sensed something as he tried, a sort of tingling in his claws. He felt that he might be able to get results, if he persevered. Tink-Tank showed him the new shield, and explained that, while perhaps useful. They were far more expensive in resources than the claws. Gronk ordered him to produce enough claws for all the bulls, putting the shields on hold for the moment. His other idea was to do with the ballista. He and the little smith went to examine it, though the results were less than satisfactory. The weapon was serviceable, but very old. Upon questioning, the dwarves said it had been built many years ago. The plans were likely still in the archives.

Ragnar returned after some days, looking far thinner than when he left. He and his three body guards had spent the intervening weeks travelling rather than hunting, eating only when they had to. They had found what they had been sent to do. There were three clans in the northern mountains, each with their won chief. None had been overly aggressive to Ragnar, but neither had they been submissive or welcoming.

With the news that there were other clans out there, Gronk’s mind swung back to when he had defeated the chief of the Skull Eatas, Gulgamarsh. In that duel, magic had made him the victor. Back then he hadn’t been much bigger than the other trolls, and far smaller than his opponent. Now even Moruk was larger than the other troll had been. Maybe he would defeat the other trolls with strength alone. Either way, he felt that the lightning magic was just out of reach. If he kept trying, he might be able to grasp it. Hours were spent doing nothing but muttering connected words and thrusting his fist at a tree. After two days, he was ready to give up. Then it finally worked. A single bolt of clear, blue energy blew the top half of the tree off. Gronk gave a feral grin.

In the following days, the tribe was clearly arming themselves for yet another war. Bull trolls were being fitted with the new metal claws, and practising to get used to the added weight. Tink-Tank and his team had now produced enough for every troll to wield a set, including Gronk. The other project was the ballista. While Tak-Tak searched through the archives for the plans, Tink-Tank and some of the larger trolls worked on getting down the ballista from its perch above the gate. Once down, they had the dwarves demonstrate loading and firing. Two male dwarves seemed enthusiastic about the idea of a mobile ballista, even if trolls were wielding it. It proved the some of the reloading was too intricate and delicate for the trolls to manage, but the winding was easy for them. Dwarves or goblins would be required to help reload it, but it would be far faster to reload with trolls working the winding mechanism.

With his tribe outfitted for war, Gronk decided it was time to march north. He gathered twenty five bulls trolls to follow him, including Moruk, and left the rest with Ragnar. He took a number of the goblins, but left all the dwarves. Their short legs would only slow the group down, and they weren’t entirely reliable. Moruk and his dozen were assigned to hunting and scouting ahead, giving them a chance to demonstrate what they had learned from Medal. The black clad human was to stay at the mine, and was going to be watched carefully. The march north was cold and gruelling, despite it being the beginning of the summer. The goblins were quickly unable to walk on their own, the thick snow drifts being far deeper than they were tall. Some were sent home, but Moruk’s chosen were carried on the shoulders of some of the larger trolls. When the group reached a point about half way between the three tribe’s supposed locations, Gronk had the Children set up camp in a forest. A crude shelter was erected and a fire lit. Before Gronk came to power, no troll would have lit a fire, but things were different now. The fire had been tamed by the Big Papa and was their servant. Moruk went to the three clans, challenging their leaders to a duel. The conditions were simple; only one chief walks out of the ring alive, and they take command of all three other tribes. When Moruk returned, it was unclear if the chiefs had accepted. All there was to do was wait. In the meantime, Gronk and the others marked out a ring some fifty metres across on a frozen lake. This would be the battle ground, as the ice was over five metres thick and very unlikely to break.

After a week, the incessant snow fall ceased. On the same day, the chiefs arrived. The first was half Gronk’s size, his face a web of twisting scars. His fur was white, torn out in places, exposing tough pink flesh. His name was Weshak, and he favoured tearing out throats with his teeth. The second to arrive was tall and slim, for a troll. His fur was grey like a boulder, dappled with mossy green and brown. Had he curled into a ball and held still, he could have easily pretended to be a stone. His name was Fellash, and his tribe were silent about how he gained his power. Finally, the last chief arrived. His tribe was placed furthest north, and he was a monstrous size. As tall and broad as Gronk himself, this troll was fatter than any they had seen. His skin was a sooty black, thicker by far than any other trolls. Much was said about his mighty arms, and the way he crushed the air out of his opponents.

Despite the mounting tension, the tribes mingled somewhat. Words and grunts were exchanged in an almost cordial way, but it broke off when the four chiefs all made their way to the circle. Each chose a corner and had their followers fill that side of the ring. Then they stepped forward and listed their titles. Little could be gleaned from them, except that the fat one was named Gulank. All around the ring, the trolls began to roar and stamp. The roaring was primordial and chaotic, but the stamp was unified. Every troll slammed their feet onto the ice in unison, screaming the name of their leader or tribe as they did so. Gronk rolled his shoulders and stared down his opponents. To his left was Weshak, whose eyes were fixed hungrily on Fellash, who was on Gronk’s right. Opposite him, Gulank scratched his enormous belly and grinned at Gronk. Without warning, Weshak gave a hideous cry of his own and charged. Fellash hurtled forward to meet him, signalling that the fight had truly began.

We seem to have settled on attacking Gulank, the debate is no on whether or not to use magic. If I'm correct in this, a vote should solve this.
