You are Princess Lydia Tannhäuser Von Cygnus Gates the third, second in line of succession to the throne, duchess of Tannhäuser, and executive director of the Royal Rocketry Corps of Midland.

It is dawn and the sun is rising behind the Mk4c Cherubim launch vehicle that will carry the Selene2 lunar probe to the moon. You had hoped on getting the probe to the moon before the autumn equinox and typhoons but, due to a problem with your radio telescope, it was lost in space before broadcasting any pictures back to earth. Fortunately you have managed to fix the telescope, repair the storm damage, and prepare a replacement probe. It is ready to launch on your orders.

You haven't been the only one hard at work however, after practicing docking and long duration space flight, Ms Kenaway's SSC has launched it's first permanent space habitat. Mbinguni Kijiji or heavenly village, consists of an inflatable living quarters based on an improved version of there reflector balloons; a rigid functional cargo block containing life support systems, solar power, and station keeping thrusters; and a single Kijumbamshale (Southern Swallow) space capsule to serve as the command center and crew return vehicle. Currently it depends on a steady stream of supply launches but the SSC hopes to one day make long term colonization of space completely self sufficient.

It is now turn 20, The Tang contract is renegotiated in 2 turns. your per turn budget has been spent and you are out of luck.

They, focus more on putting things into space. You on the other hand are inventing satellite communications, programmable automatic computers, re-usable spaceplanes, and radio-reactive power.

Also when this next probe gets up, your budget's shall be equal.
>>
We should try to use infiltrators to gain acess to their space habitat and get the layout, expand and improve upon their design and put it on the moon. Also, try to find the missing probe if possible.

Launch the Selene 2.
We must get our permanent space station in geo-stationary orbit, and make it bigger and better than the SSC's, with a shipyard.

Wouldn't we need someone with technical knowledge on building things? I doubt a pilot would be able to learn much.

Speaking of pilots, all our pilots are so bad and unskilled. Leveling any skill up is hard and unrewarding, not to say slow as hell.

The missing probe is probably another craiter on the moon by now. Finding it would be impossible with your current equipment, and very difficult with the best hypothetical equipment.

>>25995526
You haven't gotten any experience in building things in space yet. Hawtry is working on a habitat design however, he just needs funding.
After wracking your brain trying to figure out how to catch up, you decide to stop worrying and just get this probe launched before you plan your next move. It's a nice clear day and everything is ready. You count down to zero and pull the switch.

1. Put a man on the Moon and bring them back safely to Earth.

Uh, yes? It's the very first thing we thought of, and why this quest is part Race to the Moon and part XCOM.
We've already discussed this.
>>
>>25995761
I'd wager it's an FTL burst of some kind. Or an intergalactic war that we're just watching from afar.

Maybe we should have defensive satellites. Are there any treaties regarding weapons in space?

We just have to put some kind of coilgun up there for decent defence.
>>
>>25995834
Well, we'd need a treaty allowing us to do it first. The UN has treaties against putting weapons up into space and I wouldn't be surprised if this world (I'm new as well) had similar agreements.

If there is a treaty, maybe we could call it a "research supercollider." See how fast particles travel in space and all that. In reality, it's a weapon.

You begin typing a formal request to the Bureau to launch an investigation, and to send it to Stonefield where it can be printed on delivered to the Beuro by a trusted courier. Seargent Adell tells you that MVAC can use large prime numbers encrypt a message so that it can only be decoded with the proper key. Without the key it would take a computer comparable to MVAC more than a hundred years working non-stop to crack the code. As long as MVAC is the most powerful automatic computer in the world, nobody should be to intercept your transmissions.

>Harker uses 1 point of stamina to reduce fail roll to 9, success.

The Meteor's radio signal weakens as the re-entry blackout starts. However curiously enough MVAC manages to continue tracking the Meteor's radio signal via the satellite network, even though the ground stations lose contact. Even from above the signal is weakened, but it does not vanish completely. This is especaly remarkable as the Stonefield radio teliscope cannot pick up his signal even though it is much more powerful than the satelite's antennas. Curious.

"It's *crackle* very hot *Buzz* in here Your *Static*" Is all you can make out, but that's more than any other mission has given you in previous missions. Even the SSC has reported that radio contact is temporaraly lost with spacecraft as they re-enter the atmosphere.

It is now turn 22 and time to renegotiate the Tang Contract.

You receive a letter from the Nestle Food company telling you that sales of Tang have been low, with most of the product being bought up by the SSC. Because of the low profit margins Mr Nestle wants to reduce the royalty payment to 1 point per turn from 2 points. Is this acceptable?

You have 50 RnD points to spend, and two luck points. The winter solstice and new year is in two turns.
>>
>>25999416
>You have 50 RnD points to spend
Shouldn't this be 52, because of our successful Lunar mission? Or has that not been publicized yet?

Shouldn't the Lunar mission have reignited interest in the space program, and boosted sales of Tang?
>>
>>25999482
Derp, yeah 52. Although that might be reduced to 51 if the tang deal is renegotiated. Perhaps you should point out the lunar probe and Harker's test flight to him.
>>
>>25999605
That is what I wanted to ask about; didn't the Lunar Impact mission get publicized?

"Mr. Nestle, the RRC has just put a probe on the Moon, and our latest flight of a new type of Capsule has just been successful. Surely such events would respark interest in space and the things associated with the space program?"
>>
Listening to the SSC's radio traffic, you hear something unusual. The third mission to the space habitat seems to be going fine until it comes time to expand the solar panel array with new cells brought up on the supply ship.
You aren't sure entirely what happened because they were talking in Suthish, but from what Klaus tells you it seems like there was some kind of accident and one of the Space Scouts was injured. The Spacewalk was aborted and both crew members are returning to earth in the crew return capsule, leaving the entire station abandoned in low earth orbit.

Depending on your demeanor this might be good news or bad.
>>
>>25999416
Reduce to one point if the probe and Harker's meteor do nothing to excite his sales. In fact could we help market tang by using a recording from our void knights endorsing it as a fun drink on the ground and in space?
>>
>>25999403

No. Begin investing in the other pilots too. We have 9 of them, but only ever use 4.
>>
>>25999694

Since we are in public, we shall act disheartned. On the inside, however, we shall be celebrating.
>>
>>25999694
Of course we will show concern. We are not uncouth, and it would not befit a princess to publicly show pleasure in the misfortune of others.

And the SSC's space station, while a concern to our position in the race, is an obstacle that we can overcome.

We don't want this race to fall from friendly to bitter, after all.
>>
>>25999768
Then what project are you going to take the RP points from?
From MultiVAC, which is one step short of completion?
The Meteor, which we've already shown by the die rolls is still dangerous and none of the other pilots save Cobham have a Piloting skill as good as Harker's, and we need to launch the Meteor in order to secure a 2RP bonus?
The Archangel, which we need to build to even launch the Meteor?
Or the EVA suit, which we'll need for our own spacewalk missions?
>>
>>25999403
Currently the Meteor is in Fort Adler, and Palmer is on Tannhäuser island. Harker also expresses concern that the Meteor also be tested on return from orbit rather than another sub-orbital flight. This will require the construction of an engine and RCS.
>>
>>25999905
>>25999905
That's 2RP additional, but he's right that it needs to be tested from an orbital flight.

Will sending Palmer to Fort Adler, or bringing the Meteor back to Tannhauser Island, take the entire Turn?
Otherwise I don't see why we can't have Palmer go to Fort Adler with the Void Engine and RCS, and have the workshops at Fort Adler construct an Archangel, and do an orbital test.
>>
>>25999954
You can build all of those at Fort Adler, but Good luck convincing Harker to let anybody else touch his favorite spacecraft.

I second this budget.

You manage to talk Nestle into keeping the contract the way it was by promising better publicity in the coming year. You hope you can keep up with this promise.

Confirming budget, updating wiki.

What shall you do this turn?
>Send your regards to Ms Kenaway and inquire on the nature of the accident.
>Take a peek at Harker's will (Dishonorable -1 luck)
>Ask Cobham about Harker
>Ask Orion about the eastern islands.

You have two luck points.
>>
We should see if we can get the Meteor to rendezvous with the space habitat and have a look at the thing.
>>
>>26000532
Lets talk to Ms Kenaway!
>>
>>26000532

Well now that we have Harker's will we should actually check if anybody else has a will or if they are in order. That or have the Colonel Smith delegate it out.

Has Ms Kenway published what happened. If not don't send a message, she may think we are spying on her which is bad form for friends.

Other than That with storm season out of the way I want to go see Orion's mom and her island.
>>
>>26000532
>Send your regards to Ms Kenaway and inquire on the nature of the accident.
This is time sensitive, since it just happened.
>>
>Send your regards to Ms Kenaway and inquire on the nature of the accident.

Hopefully this will help with our own project.
>>
>>26000532
We shall also launch the Meteor for the second time this turn. Do not forget.
>>
Rolled 6, 9 - 2 = 13

>>26000534
This would be nearly impossible because of Fort Adler's high Latitude and the meteor's limited RCS fuel. Even if you could reach the station's altitude there wouldn't be enough fuel left over for the necessary maneuvers to rendezvous and still have some left over for the De-orbit burn.

Harker launches from fort Adler to head back home. The mission is being timed so that a satellite will be directly overhead as he de-orbits. Because he has not had time to recover, his stamina is at 1/3.
>>
>>26000766
>Because he has not had time to recover, his stamina is at 1/3
Oh no, we forgot about this rule.
>>
>>26000766

oh dear he should have taken time to rest. we could have had the meteor delivered to the island.
>>
Rolled 4, 8 - 2 = 10

>>26000852
You have two luck points and the Meteior has been improved significantly. At any rate the launch goes off without any problems.
>>
Rolled 6, 10 - 2 = 14

>>26000881
Also I lied, he actually has 2 stamina points. He can afford to fudge both the re entry and landing rolls.
Harker enters orbit without trouble and completes a pair of revolutions around the earth to test the Meteor's thermal management properties in sunlight and shade before firing the de-orbit thrusters and beginning the descent.
>>
>>26000944
>14
Just barely beat the Failure rating.
>>
Rolled 8, 2 - 2 = 8

>>26000981
That was for the de-orbit burn, the failure raiting for which is 19.

Although radio contact from ground stations is lost, the satellites manage to keep relaying Harker's reports the entire way down as the Meteor re-enters the atmosphere.
>>
>>26001038

Have we figured out why the contact gets lost every time? It keeps happening reliably; surely there's some science to it.
>>
>>25999155
this
>>26001069
>>
Rolled 2, 2 - 2 = 2

>>26001069
Yes, earlier this thread in fact. Klaus atributes it to uncharged elemental particles absorbing radio emissions.

>>26001038
Harker's Meteor slowly decelerates from hypersonic speeds as it approaches the island. The runway on Tannhäuser island runs the entire lenght of the beach, but it is verry narrow and Harker will have to hit it just right or end up in the ocean. As you watch from the Manor House's radio room overlooking the airfield you spot a tiny black dot on the horizon.
>>
>>26001180
I think he made it.
>>
>>26001180

Oh wow.

Can we get another luck point from this~?
>>
>>26001337
That's not a critical success and you already have two of them. Your budget will be raised starting next turn.
>>
>>26001417
I'm just glad Harker made it back safe and sound.
>>
>>26001180

Did we take pictures of the landing? This looks proper futuristic. We should send a few around, and make it known that artists are welcome to use what we publish as a base for their work.

"Good Morning You highness!" Ms Kenaway's voice greets you from the MVAC terminal transmitting via your satellite network. "Yes we were having some trouble with the Mbingu, the solar panels weren't giving enough power so we were trying to replace them with bigger ones, but the engineer got her suit tangled and almost depressurized. We had to call off the mission and bring her home, and the council voted ground all flights until we did a full safety check on everything. We might end up de-orbiting it and starting over." She seems very egger to share the entire story with you, the newspapers weren't nearly this detailed. "So how is you program doing You highness? Congratulations on your probe, I hope you don't think this is the end of the bet." She says, injecting a little humor to lighten the mood."

>>26001771
Of course, every launch and landing is recorded for posterity.

>>26001594
In other news, because of the differences in activity between the weekends and weekdays, I'm considering moving SPQ to saturdays only from noon to midnight (PST) If you have any comments on this please tell me in the quest thread general.
>>
>>26001834

"Would you like us to try and do some housekeeping?"

If we can attach a module to the existing station, we wouldn't dream of stealing it of course, but it'd make it an international effort.

Plus it would be nice to have tea wth Jakisan on it.

Assuming we manage to not spill the tea.
>>
>>26001834
Jokingly "Well I didn't say what we sent to the moon, just the moon I believe. Now I will accept checks or dresses for my winnings, that or maybe I can come over and visit some time with my void Knights and retinue."
>>
>>26001834

About moving the quest, I can live with that, for sure! This is a lot of fun. I haven't participated as much as I hoped because I had to go to Serbia and build powerplant.
>>
>>26001834
It would be nice to have a set time on the weekend that everyonewell almost everyone can attend.
>>
>>26001935
"I remember, you say 'race you to the Moon' the winner will be decided when one of us reach the moon or die trying." Ms Kenaway says over the radio, countering your joke with one of her own. Well maybe she's not joking, you can't tell. Does she really intend to go to the moon herself? One advantage she has over you is that being a commoner she can risk her life all she wants without putting a nation in jeopardy.

>>26001932
"Do you want to buy it?" She asks, again with that dangerous mixture of jest and earnestness made even more difficult by her foreign accent and mannerisms.
>>
>>26002118

We should worry a little about our counterpart, she seems to be getting in the blue valley a little...

"Maybe, but before we do we would like to visit!" After all, we did help with the power systems, maybe we can fix them.
>>
>>26002118
No, we really shouldn't buy it. It's in LEO and would need continuous fuel shipments to stay in orbit.
>>
It's past midnight here and time for bed. See you next time and thanks for 130+ posts.

>>26003789
The game does not handle station keeping burns. Although if I wanted to go into that much detail, it would probably be one burn every 12 turns or so. Sending regular shipments of food is more important.
>>
>>26003932
Night god mother.
