Notes on Rolls and Voting:

When I request rolls, each set of three rolls counts for one action. For example, a two-step plan would take the first 6 linked rolls. A particularly bad failure can stop your plans early.

When rolling 1d100, I will consider criticals within the first ten linked rolls. Only criticals that occur in the first three rolls will be counted as "supercrits". This is still the case even if you'd have plan long enough to require more than ten rolls.

When I roll 1d20, the rules are the same, but I only consider criticals for the first five rolls, rather than ten. Criticals in the first three are still "supercrits".

When a plot choice results in extensive debate, I'll try to weed out the most popular trains of thought, and then call a vote on them. When voting, please respond with only a link back to the post and the number corresponding to your opinion. Other votes are discounted.

Finally, note that this is not a democracy; it is a benevolent dictatorship.

Recent Events Summary:

Your friend, Abigail, and niece of the Archmage Yi Fang, was twisted into a complex political situation in Archon. As the Archmage's niece, she is expected by him and much of the city of be a prime candidate to succeed his seat - making her an obvious target for ambitious rivals. You decided to infiltrate her main opposition, the Cheung family, to assassinate their leaders - a merciful alternative to Yi Fang's plan to erase them in their entirety, women and children included. You killed and impersonated a high ranking member of the family, and discovered that the family was divided between an aggressive and moderate faction. You instigated a coup, and with the element of surprise, and your own efforts in killing the leaders of the more violent faction, managed to put the moderates into power.

With Abigail's immediate problems taken care of, you returned to help your new allies, refugees from the battle at the Ring City, establish themselves in the forest. After fighting off an attack by yet more constructs marked with "002" the teleportation was successful. You decided to explore the forest and scout out any possible dangers, and soon found that you weren't alone. The native elves, werewolves, and humans seem friendly enough, but you didn't exactly make friends with the orcs. Meeting the challenge of the orc leader, Vaz Grak, only seemed to antagonize them further, but for now, things are peaceful. Auriel is confident that, with the help of your neighbors, you will be established in record time.

You've decided that one of the keys to the vault under Jacob's Field needs to be collected - the lightning key, possessed by the late Duke Vellik of Evinbrook. But the castle city is again locked in a battle for survival, and this time, it's on the verge of death. Kan-Abar's armies have returned, two demon lords in tow.

You beat one of the demon lords to the top of the castle, but were unable to find anything of note before it arrived. Barely escaping its deadly, acidic fog, you reached the Duke's basement - and discovered the duke himself alive and well.

The demon lord is only moments behind you. Duke Vellik has a plan to stall the demons with patched-up dwarven technology, but his capital is burning, forces are scattered, and he has little refuge but what you can offer. In exchange, he's offered all he knows about the dwarves, and the key that you seek.

>Last time...

<Seems like your options are limited, at the moment,> you say. <But I could take you to safety.>

"Few people would take me in, Shadow - few that would accept be without conditions that would chain me forever."

<Well, here are mine,> you say. You glance at the suit of magically-powered armor. <All this research, all this magic? It's on my side, when the time comes.>

"I expected as much. And second?"

<I want the lightning key.>

"...it's yours." He pats his chest, and you notice a leather string around his neck, ending below his clothes. Oddly enough, only one of the two dukes has it. "Once you tell me where this safety of yours, is, exactly."

>last time, consensus was Haven, but that we don't tell the Duke its exact location

<...I can't tell you the exact location, but it's safe. I promise you that.>

"Not good enough," Vellik says. "I need to know where I'm going. If you can't tell me...well, I'll make it work."

He doesn't sound as confident as he usually does...and when you feel another rumble from the castle above, his expression falters further.

What do you do?

>Don't budge. He has no options; he's just trying to squeeze it out of you.
>You don't have time for games, and he's too valuable to risk. Tell him the location of Haven.
>Snatch the key and leave the duke to the consequences of his actions. You can't trust him as far as you can throw him.
>suggest an alternative plan
>>
>Don't budge. He has no options, he's just trying to squeeze it out of you.

Y'know, I don't think he's actually all that valuable to us. We need the key, sure (and I would recommend snatching it from him if he stays all stubborn), but there's a decent chance that he'll betray us as soon as he has the opportunity.

<We have a couple of options, some friends and I have created a haven for those who needed it, you will not get a warm welcome with open arms but if you keep to your best behavior you will be accepted and with your skills will probably become invaluable. Or I know a certain archmage in Archon that owes me a favor or several. But I don't know how you could feel about going to Archon.>

We shouldn't tell him the location, but maybe tell him something like "It is a "haven" for those who have no home to call their own". We don't have to of course, but it might make him feel a bit better.

For a moment, you think Vellik is going to accept. Something lights up in his eyes - ambition, sensing new, unexplored opportunities. It's a look your familiar with.

But then, he closes his eyes, and shakes his head. "...no. I can't. Take me south, near the border with Arland."

<What about Detson?>

"...Detson is gone," the duke says. "They've been undermining it for months. Kelvere is all but lost." He raises his gaze. "I will need to lead what remains. My last order to my commanders was to regroup to the south. Take me to the border."

<...I have a friend, in Archon,> you say. <Perhaps that - >

"Absolutely not," Vellik says. "The last thing I want is to be anywhere in a ten mile radius of Yi Fang while I'm in no position to bargain." The floor shakes. The barrier of magic shielding the room trembles. "We have no more time, Shadow!" Vellik shouts. His illusionary self created by Magnock's staff moves toward the magic dwarven armor.

What do you do?

By the way, you guys do know that Vellik was lying about the control issues with the staff? I'm pretty certain that he genuinely tried to kill Flint, but when he realised that siding with the angels was a really bad idea, he used the staff to write off his actions.

I'd assume it was nothing personal, and no harm came of it in the end, but still.

>Snatch the key, get the fuck out.

Remember, we came here for the lightning key. If we get out of the scenario without it, we have failed our mission. Vellik doesn't really have much to offer us in an alliance- he's just a lightning mage, and he's lost his political power.
>>
Ok, taking him where he asked is a go.
>>
>>25973578
Take him to Arland, but figure out a way to get in contact with him again. tell him something about how we are still weak and not set in place, and that's why secrecy is required. if we become more entrenched, we no longer have as dire of a need.
>>
>>25973647

This is an excellent point. We should confiscate the Staff from Vellik, along with the lightning key. We could return it to Adavan or keep it as a bargaining chip for Yi Fang.

<Either you lost control of your illusion, or you tried to kill Flint. I'm confiscating your toys, Vellik.>

>>
The armor seems to com alive, snapping and buckling over the clone of the duke as various parts of it light up and flash. The duke nods to his own self. "Detonate it all when we've lost."

The copy of the duke nods, then turns to face the now-buckling stone ceiling. Lightning crackles around him, brighter and harsher.

"Shadow, time to go!"

You grab a hold of both men and gather your aura behind you. <Is this tunnel straight to the exit?>

"Yes, why?!"

<Hold on!>

BOOM

You roar down the tunnel at supersonic speed. The old beams holding up the ceiling collapse from the force of your passing, and the tunnel buries itself as you fly free, up into the sky around Evinbrook. In another few seconds, Evinbrook's castle is fading from view.

The duke and his steward are both helpless at the moment...you could probably snatch the key from the duke right now, before landing.

What do you do?

>take the key, then land

>>
For a moment, you think to secure your hold on the key. You can't trust the duke...but you stop yourself.

>you've gained 4 humanity (448)

You cut out your supersonic above a hamlet along the Tairns river. With a -WHOOMPH- you speed drastically slows, and you drift down to the ground and set down the duke and his companion. You can see a platoon of soldiers in the distance, organizing the town's retreat. Far away, a great cloud of ash hangs in the sky over Evinbrook, a black blotch on an overcast day.

Suddenly, a bolt of lightning strikes down from the sky - and another, and another, a strobe of gold light. It cuts out. A moment later, you hear the echoing thunder roll over the plains. The duke stares at his destroyed home, silent.

<...Vellik. The key.>

Vellik shifts, then takes they key up from the necklace around his head. He passes it to you. "For services rendered."

You take the key and put it in your belt.

>acquired: Lightning Key

<What's your plan?>

"...Evinbrook was a delaying action...as everything must be, now," he says. Suddenly, three dukes are standing on the cliff. "But being in more than one place at once is a pretty good advantage. One, to the Ring City, to call for aid. Another to Arland, for the same. And myself...to hold here as long as possible."

You're surprised. You pegged the duke for seeking shelter elsewhere, not for heroically defending his homeland. Maybe he just feels as if he has no other choice.

>>
<I have a few questions for you,> you say. <Why did you attack Flint?> you ask. <Back at the Ring City?>

"That wasn't actually me," he says. "I sent a copy of myself to the Ring City to ask for aid...which, due to the circumstances there, has not come. Hopefully Sandalphon can now spare a few angels to help my cause. If not, he's either a great fool, or a brilliant mastermind."

<What do you mean?>

"Sandalphon has the strength to destroy the demon lords," Vellik says. "He and a large handful of his highest could see it done, if they attacked together with enough force. So why do they wait? There's the threat of the Black Lady, of course - but even she recognizes the danger of demon lords. In any case, it's a poor excuse. The Black Lady hasn't made a movement greater than the occasional skirmish and rattling of sabers in decades. She doesn't want a real fight." Vellik glances at you. "But say a relatively new northern duke threatened to create a new alliance between countries - independent of the influence of the Empire. Not bound to the yoke, shall we say. Would it be profitable to let them take a few hits if a war cropped up?"

"In fact - " Vellik raises a finger, then lets it drop. "...actually, no. Not even Sandalphon is stupid enough to intentionally provoke the summoning of demon lords. But he'll certainly use this opportunity to destroy Kelvere, and stop my plans."

<What can we do?>

"Nothing," the duke says. "It's already done. And who will sweep in to rebuild Kelvere when it's over? The angels - thereby bonding us in debt and gratitude for longer than I'll live, I'm sure. That is, assuming there's anything left to rebuild."

>con't
>>
<A cynical view.>

"But can you deny the possibility?"

You think about everything you know about Sandalphon, and you can't.

"You see?" the duke says. "The damage is done. But how much damage, how much dependence...that, I can still limit." He tights his hands into fists. "We will strike fast, and then we will vanish. And then we will strike again, and vanish again. The demon lords will not know peace from my lightning while they stand on my lands."

Except we know absolutely zilch about him, for all we know we'd need an army to help beat him down. For all we know he has yet more demon lords as bodyguards.

Besides, I'd really like Obis to be there when we finally deal with that nutcase.
>>

Yeah, it'd be useful, sure, but while wispbro is good and all I rather suspect he's going to be outmatched quite soon.

These demons threaten all I hold dear as well. I will lend my aid as well.

If you could seperate a single demon lord from its host I believe I could slay it now. I have grown stronger. But not strong enough to deal with both it and an army.
>>
>>25974097

maybe we should help him kill one demon lord, we could pull it off with the Duke helping us.

Best to limit the control the angels will have over him, as well as dealing with those fucking DEMON LORDS.
>>

That is if SM doesn't have him chained in an incubus dungeon or something.

>>

In short order, you land at Haven.

You've been noticing something, though...the Sky-sever seems to be 'finding' you faster than it used to. Perhaps it's a product of flying too often?

You quickly gather the leaders of your group.

Auriel is the last to arrive, stepping along with Tyrael. She nods at Ila, Hamil, and Cain, then looks to you. "How was the trip?"

"Good...but Kelvere is not in good shape."

"What do you mean?"

You explain everything to the group - the battle, the demon lords, and the duke's current state.

"...so...his cloning magic got out of hand, and he accidentally tried to kill Flint?" Auriel asks. She raises an eyebrow. "You believe this?"

<Not entirely,> you say. <He kept avoiding any real answer. My conclusion is that I was the ally he needed at that moment.>

"Next time I see him, I'm going to pin him to the wall and skin him alive until I get real answers," Auriel says sharply. She softens. "But...his foolishness is apart from Kelvere, itself. All those people..."

"Is there something we could do?" Tyrael asks.

"...we can't reveal our position, and you're not strong enough for one, let alone two," Auriel says. "For now...the duke might be exactly what we need. He's lived his whole life pitted against forces greater than his own. Now that their surprise is gone, I suspect he'll fair much better against Kan-Abar...as long as he can keep the demons scurrying about."

<What do you think about his theory regarding Sandalphon?>

"Sandalphon has lost sight of what is important," Auriel says, "but I don't think he'd let demon lords run about for the sake of political positioning. It's too damn risky. Demons that are out of control always try to summon more demons. If they make a pentaverate..."

<A what?>

>con't
>>
"Five demon lords, working together" Auriel says. "It happened back in the elementomachy, when Hecate was getting desperate. At the last moment, she herself stopped it. The pentaverate is essentially the threshold at which they'd have enough power to detach themselves from their summoner entirely. You see, summons are creatures of imagination and magic. They don't -exist- like we do. It would be an attempt to shift into our existence - they could no longer simply be banished." She folds her arms. "Basically, really, really bad. But if it's just two, I think we're alright, for now. The Ring City will muster."

<In any case, I need to find Obis,> you say. <I don't want whoever wins to own Kan-Abar. He must be restored to his rightful place. What happened to him after Palthair?>

"He went with Fang," Auriel says. "He said he was going to Port Vanta, to find the person that the sage mentioned - Blackwater. You'll have to look for him there."

<Do you know anything about this Blackwater?>

"Sure," Auriel said. "An infamous pirate and master of escape. He sailed every sea, and robbed them all, too. He even stole from the elves, and they know how to hold a grudge, let me tell you. Rumor had it he was actually a privateer of Kan-Abar - maybe there was more to that than we realized." She taps her chin. "You know...that Janus Miller fellow, the oddly dressed fool we met at the rock? He seemed a roguish sort - maybe he knows someone that could help. We could send him a message."

What do you do?

"Will do," Auriel says. "He owes me those tools still, anyway."

Ila folds her arms. "I don't like him. He's a liar, and a thief."

"To find something in the mud, have to get your hands dirty," Auriel says. "Well, back to work."

They disperse. You can see your construct working on the fortress, hauling lumber from the woods and back.

You decide to mediate on a shard while you wait. You're not sure exactly what happened back at the duke's castle...but you don't want to find out what happens when more than two are weakened at once.

You have two "recharge" periods to work with. So you could work on the same one twice, or two different shards.

That and it would take a large amount of EXP to get results out of the tree, as we are still at the start.

We aren't at all pathetic, we have many of the stealth skills, and the times when we have failed are when we roll 1-10

Nope.
>Shadow - animated undead, as well as shadow spirits and wisps. While these summons tend to be the weakest in endurance and attack power, they are cheaper. They also passively gain whatever stealth bonus you have, and have lower control-break risks. They make up the right branch of the tree.

>>25975218
>>25975222

Counter-intuitively, the right-hand branch of the tree, the shadow-element summons, stealth with you. That's everything past ghoul, as well as your first summon, the wisp.

Ghouls themselves don't have that power.

It's a bit handwavy because I made most of it up before I set some other things in stone. Don't think about it too hard.

Now, ghosts n' stuff have their own not-small measure of sneakiness, but your first 'ghost' will not be as sneaky as you.

At this moment, I want to curse in a manner that would make mister Blackwater blush.

This thread started when I was still at work, so I missed the optimal window of opportunity to my hopefully well thought-out contribution of all the plans and many interesting thoughts people have come up with.

Here, have this bit I thought of while walking home.

Spirit, Water, and Earth are the elements of the elements of the world. From them will arise life.
Wind will erode what stands in time, fire will blacken and char, lightning will invoke fire and shock creatures dead.
Light burns and dries that which lives, yet allows people and animals alike to perform their daily things.
Shadow withers plants and brings a stop to day's work, but allows for rest and time with loved ones.

Namefag awayy.

You meet with Auriel and walk to a nearby clearing where Janus has agreed to meet you. The man himself is sitting on a log, smoking a pipe. His motley collection of enchanted clothing is as odd to your senses, and your sight. You can feel a few other men back in the trees - a predictable precaution.

He stands up and gives Auriel a long look up and down her body. "I think I've died and gone to heaven."

"Tools," Auriel grunts.

Janus produces a small cube. He holds it out from his body, fingering it gently. It shines brightly, and then a giant pile of everything from shovels to 2-man saws is dumped in the clearing.

"Tools," Janus says. "You're so happy you could kiss me, right?"

"I'm spoken for," Auriel says. "Tough luck."

"Aww, come on. He can't be that great."

"He puts his life on the line for innocents without hesitation, befriended a certain shadow elemental, and slayed a demon lord," Auriel says.

Janus shrugs. "I could do that."

"Despite these feats, he thinks himself the worst knight in Venia," Auriel finishes, "because he is truly humble." She smiles. "Your little come-ons are flattering, though. Keep it up."

"Anyway," Janus says, miffed at being brushed off, "what was that info you wanted?"

>con't
>>
You step forward. <I'm looking for Blackwater, the pirate,> you say. <Any leads you could give me would be appreciated.>

"Well," Janus says slowly, "can't help you."

<...why not?>

"Blackwater's a friend of mine," Janus says. "Now...I'm not a goody-goody or anything...but he's a good friend. And, he's retired."

<Someone I need to find went to Port Vanta to find him,> you say.

"That's not good," Janus says. "After old Blackie got kicked out of Kan-Abar by Nulis, he moved his base of operations to Vanta. Now, the local gangs and such didn't like him moving in on their turf, especially one Damian Vonnegut - owns a crime empire the stretches from Heavensgate to Gaphold. Blackwater outsmarted them, though, but he did have to leave, and that's when he called it quits to enjoy his treasure. He always did like the fighting and the travel more than anything else, though. It was hard on him." Janus shrugs. "So, if your friend goes to Vanta and starts asking around for a guy that a lot of them hate...he could get himself into trouble, see what I'm saying?"

<Is there any lead you can give me? Where would he have gone?>

Janus frowns and scratches his head. "...place down by the docks in Vanta called The Virgin Orc. Blackwater's crew was regular there. But I won't tell you anything about the man himself. Annoying thing, friendship."

<Understood. Thank you for the help.>

Janus gets up and walks from the clearing. "Careful around Vonnegut," he calls over his shoulder. "There's a shred honor among pirates. Some bullshit about taming the ocean. But there ain't any among thieves."

You've been touching the ground periodically to avoid the Sky-sever. You noticed the intervals are getting shorter on you...but that's not what the roll was about.

-------------
-------------

<Looks like I've got my lead.>

"Obis will be vital to restoring Kan-Abar," Auriel says. "And he's a good man. But if anyone gets wind of this, it could blow up, fast. Stay quiet. Stay safe."

You nod, and fly into the air.

-------------
BOOM
-------------

You cut out your supersonic a few miles before the city. The river winds low within a long, farm-coated flatland, punctuated by a port sprawling up and down the coast where the river meets the ocean. Port Vanta. Everything produced by the northeastern chunk of Venia flows through here, eventually.

You land near the river, and transform into a human with a heavy cloak. The road is busy with people - animals, carts. You see a group of ten soldiers or moving along on patrol. You blend into the crowd, walking along easily.

You reach the first buildings quickly. They're ramshackle affairs, long since bursting outside the walls. The gatehouse holds a mage, and you sense more soldiers, and see a few archers posted on the rooftops.

Ulund is very friendly with the Empire. Shadow mages wouldn't exactly be welcomed with open arms. You draw your aura in tight.

Do you use any special ability to hide yourself?

You calmly walk under the gate. A guard's eyes flick over you briefly, and then away. You let out a little sigh of relief, and continue on.

The years of bustle and trading have forced the port to build up. Tall, mufti-storied buildings lean in around you, creating narrow, winding streets. There's plenty of dark nooks and alleys - it actually makes you feel safer.

It isn't long before you reach the docks. The crowd transitions from farmers delivering food into burly sailors carousing and milling about the streets. Tavern signs swing in the ocean breeze.

You notice a sign painted with a effeminate orc in a white dress, holding it down against a gust of wind with a red blush on its cheeks. Black letters reading "The Virgin Orc" are painted in an arc above the image. You step inside, and find yourself in a dimly lit room. It's moderately crowded, and there's plenty of chatter and background noise. A bard plays a violin in the opposite corner, providing a bit of music. Several serving girls attend to the sailors, and the barkeep is busy directing his kitchen and filling glasses.

How do you play this?

>take a seat, order a drink, and wait. You should scope things out first.

You decide that, for the moment, you want to case the place a bit.

You sidle over to a small table in the middle of the room, so as not to draw attention. You sit. There's two doors behind the bar, both leading to the kitchen. Stairs at the end of the counter lead upstairs. Looks like there's just the one entrance to the second floor.

A serving girl appears. She gives you a look. "Get you anything?"

"Beer," you say aloud. "Cheap, but not too cheap."

"Be right back." She wanders off.

You lean toward the nearest conversation. Your "eyes" are looking off and away, but you can direct your gaze through your Replicated form in any direction you like. You watch the men without watching them.

"...hear Jake's getting worked over?"

One of the men looks toward the barkeep, then back to his friend. "Vonnegut?"

"Yeah," the other grunts. "Well, probably. He's been cleaning up since Blackwater left." He nods at the bartender. "Jake's protection fee keeps hopping up and up, know what I mean?"

"Yeah. Like we should find another bar."

"Shame, though," the first man says. He sighs. "Best food in the fucking port. Of course this is the place that gets put down."

They both nurse their beers quietly for a time, then get up and leave.

Your waitress returns soon after that, giving you a sizeable, frothing mug. "Anything else for you?"

"No, thank you." You reach a hand for your purse.

She snorts. "Try listening to him for three weeks straight. Jake loves the damn violin, but I'm sick of it." She walks off.

The barkeep eventually wanders in your direction, drying a glass. You nod at him to get his attention.

He sets the glass down and leans on the counter next to you. "Yessir?" He eyes your still-full mug. "Not a problem with the drink, I hope?"

>Also, the obis plan is a really bad idea, mostly because whatever happens to us would be attributed to him if he is still here.
The smarter play is to enter the bar as obis, and AFTER seeing people's reactions, throw some cash down on the bar or nearest table.
Then, once we have everyone's attention, point at ourface and say 'I'm looking for this man. Who wants to get paid?. Take a Goooood look.'

This has a nice effect of possibly getting a message to obis, because holy shit will people talk about it - and its clear we're NOT him.

Also, offering thieves money for information is probably the best way to get it fast.
>>
>>25976413
could be fun.
>>
>>25976413

This is a terrible idea. It outs the fact that we're looking for Obis, that we're an unknown mage with the power to replicate people, and that we're stupid enough to announce both of these things to a crowd of strangers.

Voting against this. Plus no one knows Obis is a prince yet and we don't want people to know that he's important at all.

"No problem with the drink," you say. "I'm looking for a friend of mine. We were supposed to meet up here, later."

The barkeeper frowns for a moment, then shrugs. "What's he look like?"

"Kanian. Brown hair, reddish eyes. Wears a pack that looks like he could go hiking and spelunking at the same time."

The man slowly inhales. "...yeah. He came by, asking about...the wrong sort of thing. I told him to leave, he didn't, and now he's up shit creek with no paddle." He leans toward you. "You listen," he says quietly. "Don't know what you want with Blackwater, but he's long gone. You leave, or you'll end up like your friend."

"What happened to him?"

The barkeep stops. He stands back up. "Anyway," he says loudly, "if you're looking for work, best try the warfs. Captains always looking for replacement crew members."

You're confused by the sudden change of topic, when two men come up behind you. They position themselves to your right. They wear dark clothes, and you can see knives at their belts. You can't draw attention to yourself - not yet. You collect your mug and move to another table. The man's gaze follows you for a moment, but it seems they aren't going to go out of your way to harass you after you cooperated quickly.

One of the men puts their arms around Jake's shoulders. "Let's have a chat upstairs."

Two chefs come out from the kitchen, dressed in white clothes. One of the men wears an apron spattered with blood. He has a very long, very sharp looking knife. "Hey, Jake. Wanted to know how you wanted your steak cut."

Jake's face changes, and he pulls the man's arm off his shoulder. "No, actually, we can talk right here."

The bar has gotten a lot quieter. Light from the door flickers as not a few people slip away. You tense up on your seat.

The man that feels like shadow shrugs. "Fine, Jake. Where's our money?"

"We have three more days to pay," Jake says. "The agreed amount will be delivered on time."

"That's funny. You see, we just spoke with the bossman, and by his calender, you're three days late."

Jake's face darkens. "You've been pushing me higher and higher, but I've paid, same time every damn month. I've had enough. You tell him I'll pay him in three days and not a second sooner."

The man looks at Jake. "You sure that's the message you want me to take back?"

Jake grits his teeth. "Yeah. It is."

The man gives a slow shrug. "Have it your way. But you know what happens to people that don't pay."

The two men walk out of the bar, throwing glares around the room at the patrons. Jake visibly relaxes, then shuts his eyes and turns into the kitchen. The two chefs follow, very worried looks set on their faces.

You know what I hope the summoning tree has that would make wispbro even better? If there's some ability that let's us know everything our summons know as they learn it. Long range telepathy.

It still counts, it's just not super crit. Wispbro is probably going to do his job well then get fucked over somehow over just fucking up the whole thing.
>>

First 5 over 10. It counts.

true. it won't be as bad as the <SNEAK SNEAK SNEAK> thing...

You order your wisp out after the two men. It zips out from under your illusion and under a crack in the door.

>mana: 7/34

You get up from your seat and follow the men into the kitchen. The staff and Jake are gathered in a ring. The mood is not cheery.

They look up at your entrance. Jake faces you squarely. "See what we're dealing with? That was just the tip of the iceberg. You should leave while you can."

"The friend I mentioned isn't just a causal acquaintance," you say. "What happened to him?"

"...I don't know," Jake says. "He seemed capable at a glance, but he wasn't subtle. The wrong person overheard him asking. One day, he left the tavern, and he didn't come back. That was almost a week ago." Jake turns to everyone in the kitchen. "...my dignity has suffered enough. But you all aren't a part of this. We leave, tonight. Once he hears what I said, Vonnegut will make an example of me."

You feel a sensation - something suddenly cut off from you. Your wisp is dead. Your senses tell you it's just a few streets over.

An image flashes into your mind. An alley next to a brick building. The last message from your little servant.

What do you do?

>head to the rooftops; scout out the alley
>say something else to Jake
>go outside, try using Deep Focus
>some other strategy
>>
>>25977116
>go outside, try using Deep Focus

Deep Focus
>>
>>25977116
<Well if you're leaving anyway allow me to go make my own example of them.>
>>
My friend was not a weakling. How powerful is this Vonnegut.
>>
>>25977116
>go outside, try using Deep Focus
also, resummon wispbro
>>
>>25977116
<What your dealing with is small time, in the grand scheme of things.>
>>
>>25977116
If this is heading to the conclusion I believe it is, Vonnegut will not live to see tomorrow.
go check out why Wisp died.
>>
>>25977116
>say something else to Jake
"Don't worry about Vonnegut. If he's harmed my friend you won't hear from him."
Then
>head to the rooftops; scout out the alley
>>
>>25977116
>Go outside and Deep Focus

You might not have to leave after i'm done with everything.
>>
>>25977191
Don't forget, they had a shadow mage with them. We might get spotted.
>>
>>25977116
<can you point me in the general direction of vonnegut? i would hate to have to kill my way up the chain of command>
>>
Good idea to use Deep Focus and alert every single magic user in the area to our presence.

>head into the valley, hide in the shadows, scout
>>
>>25977188
This seems good.
>>
>>25977188
>"Don't worry about Vonnegut. If he's harmed my friend you won't hear from him."

Oh hell yes, this, only replace just scouting the alley with Deep Focus
>>
>>25977210

sounds like a plan.
>>
>>25977139
>>25977149
>>25977172
>Give away our location to the people we want to be tracking.

If we have to we can just use Focus, Less of a chance of getting spotted by their mages.

Honestly, it feels like people think that Balance eliminates rather than reduces the penalty.

It's still there and still quite high for deep focus.
>>
>>25977226
>implying we won't immediately change positions following DF
We can just blink into a dark corner a few hundred feet away in an alley if we DF on a rooftop
>>
>>25977226
Yea, use Deep Focus only after all other options have been tried.
>>
>>25977226
I honestly don't care if we get spotted. Hell it would probably mean a quicker meal to get some much needed mana, anyway. Also, we might pick up on a shadow creature in the process if there is one here.
>>
>>25977253
They'd still be more alert as a result, because they know they have a shadow mage following them.
>>
<Don't worry about Vonnegut,> you say. <If he's harmed my friend, you won't hear from him.>

"...kid," Jake says. "Maybe you don't realize what you're dealing with. This man, Vonnegut - he's not just some thief with a few magic tricks up his sleeve. He owns a third of Port Vanta. He has fingers in trade routes from here to Kan-Abar. Hell, they even say he's got a man on Heavensgate's council. The only reason he's taken an interest in me, personally, is because he hated Blackwater, and he wants to ruin anything the man every touched. He's beyond what we can handle."

For a moment, you contemplate demonstrating your capabilities. But then, why risk giving yourself away with a show for no gain? You shrug at Jake, then walk from the kitchen without a word.

You quickly find the brick building, and the alley in question. There's nothing remarkable about it. You Focus on it, trying to keep the range of your magic as small as possible.

>>25977451
>risk a Deep Focus
They'll know something's in the city, but they'll have no idea what. Besides with a successful deep focus we could probably find any shadows that might happen to be in the city, Vonnegut's extremely magical (I'm assuming it's extremely magical) super sekrit hideout, and if there are any nearby enemies, then we will draw them into our extremely capable clutches.

He basically sent you a last location before going poof. There's nothing special here. The chance was knowing the general direction the men had gone in, but your focus roll sucked, so you lost them.

I went anonymous to get re-roll, I have to admit it.

I rolled the same damn thing.
>>
>>25977629

We scored just barely about the 50th percentile.
>>
>>25977640
SM does DC checks. Generally he uses the first three dice rolled, if two passes the DC then we succeeed. If theres a 100 in the first 3 we supercrit. If its within the first ten we get a minor crit.
>>
>>25977640
Actually, we have to have two rolls beat the DC to you know, beat the DC of the challenge.
What percentile we roll doesn't even matter.
>>
>>25977681

but some DC's are variable so, they have high & low targets....
>>
>Vonnegut

A criminal organization built on Bokononism
>>
It's already been a week - you can't sit and wait. You use Deep Focus.

Two things come to your immediate attention.

A large building in the center of the city holds a high concentration of mages. You suspect that is some sort of city building; perhaps the empire's men. Others are scattered about, dots of power both small and large.

A spike of earth and spirit magic catches your attention. It doesn't feel strong...but it's oddly unique. It's four or five blocks away.

Finally, a column of soldiers, headed by a mage, is marching through the streets. They're headed toward the spike of magic you just sensed.

What do you do?

>head toward the spike of magic
>head toward the government building
>sneak along behind the column of soldiers

-------------
-------------

I'll be calling the thread here. I might do more later tonight. See the twitter for more.
>>
>head toward the spike of magic
Maybe Vonegeut bit off more then he could chew.

Or that mage is in his pocket and we're going to have to fight them.
>>
>>25977843
>head toward the spike of magic
See yah later SM.
>>
>>25977843

No Fire mages we can sense, that must mean Obis either isn't in the city or he's hiding himself again.

Or, y'know, he's dead, but I doubt that.
>>
>>25977843
>head toward the spike of magic
>>
>>25977843
Spike, seems like it's going to be interesting.

And thanks for the thread man. See you next time
(hopefully)
>>
>>25977843
head toward the spike of magic. those soldiers are looking to fuck something up.
>>
>>25977870
Or he's in some type of magical, hidden, holding cell.
