(Welcome, friends, to BlackSmith Quest, with me, your new QM.)

The moon was high in the night's sky, passing the Centaurus constellation and shining down on palace grounds with its bright, silver light.

Two figures stood in the royal rose gardens and talked in hushed tones as the wind blew their words across the empty courtyard.

The shorter of the two had a deeply troubled look on his old, wrinkled face and wiggled his moustache every time he finished a sentence.

-„Your majesty, your royal father grows ever more eccentric. We fear for his health, and for the kingdom. The Orcs are at our doorstep and he is doing nothing. You must act at once!“ – he said and wiggled his moustache to indicate the end of his thought.

The older one pulled out a scroll of parchment and presented it to the younger one.

-“Here, your majesty. All the lords have signed this, only your signature and the royal seal remain and then you can…”

The younger man waved him into silence.

-“No, my father will come to his senses. He must. I have faith in him. And what you are suggesting, chancellor Wuller, is treason. I will not do it.” – said the younger man whilst removing his cowl. His golden hair, now freed from his cowl spilled down his neck and to his shoulders.

He continued with a determined look in his eyes:

-“And I will hear no more of this.” – he pointed a finger in the old mans face –“Do you understand?”

The old man seemed disappointed.

-“Yes, my prince”- he answered shortly.

“I must leave at once, chancellor” – the young prince continued – “Our war effort needs to be coordinated in the field. Have the lords been notified?”

-“Yes, my prince” – the man answered, his voice still sour from disappointment.

The younger man then moved around the rose bushes of the yard and entered a inconspicuous hidden door behind one of the fountains while the older one was left standing there, gazing at the moon.

-“Gods help us.” –

The sound of hammers striking hot metal resonated through the newly equipped Belerin’s Foundry, apprentices were running back and forth carrying, pushing, pulling and dragging all kinds of metals, pieces and equipment. The buzz and the striking of hammer on the steel echoed from early morning up to late at night.

Alaric found himself entering this chaos and being taken aback by the commotion. Fortunately, Feldane appeared out of nowhere, slung his arm across Alaric’s shoulders and gave him a tour. The foundry was everything Alaric dreamed it to be.

Great big smelters of molten iron and copper were heated above a large fire pit in the center, smiths worked left and right hammering, polishing, sharpening, engraving and inlaying mass produced armor and weapons.

-“Alaric! Look what we have done in only a week! Is it not grand?!”- He yelled trying to shout over the noise of industry coming from all around them

Alaric, a bit dumbfounded by the size of the whole operation managed a short response:

-“Yes. It’s great.”-

The tall man continued to shout, trying to win against the hitting of a hundred hammers:

“-Glad you liked it! I have some work to do now! You go visit some of the other smiths and see if they need any help. Or just take a hammer and get down to production!”

After Feldane left, Alaric finds himself alone in a sea of apprentices running around and their masters yelling at them. What are you going to do?

Here's a short recap, for the new players.

-------------*--------------

In wonderment at the sheer gigantism of this factory you wander around for a bit. There seems to be no mistake, we are preparing for war...

The prince has sent over forges from the royal mint to help with the war effort. And every Blacksmith north of Granitewood is here. Most of them simple village blacksmiths, never made a sword in their lives, and here they are, breaking down plowshares and hoes into metal for weapons.

A bit disheartened by that image you go up to the task board. A lot of jobs are posted for the taking by those who want them.

You pick up a paper and read:

3 sets of bronze pauldrons for the shipment to Millturn.

>Will you take up this job?
>>

66 - Smithing
99 - Armormaking
76 - Metal proficiency

The coals are orange and glowing.
You feel the well-known heat of the forge and dump the metal into the smelter.

As you pour it into casts, you can't help but to notice how pure the ore is... These are going to be nice pauldrons.

You strike the heated bronze on the horn of the anvil and it bends easily under the force of your hammer. Seems like all those jobs you did at Urist's shop are finally paying off. The contures of the pauldrons are perfect and you start tempering them.

You end up with a plain, albeit a very strong set of pauldrons.

Angrily, you look at your creation and take out a file and some cloth. You file down on the pointy bits of metal left over by your clumsy engraving and start polishing it.

You furiously polish on the pauldrons until your hands are sore... They are incredibly shiny, and the high quality ore gives the metal some real pretty color.

You take the last one and squeeze it with your hand and legs to stabilize it, whilst furiously scrubbing it...

-"Alaric... what are you doing?"- an apprehensive female voice comes from behind.

You turn around to see El'Galia, standing there with a worried face, smudged with a bit of coal and ash on her cheeks.
You give her a puzzled look.

-"Oh... you're... polishing your pauldron?"

-"Yes... what else would I be doing?"- you reply.

She giggles and continues:

-"Come with me, I have something to show you."- she says while running playfully out of the room.
You put down the last pauldron...

You follow her behind the foundry, into a small courtyard with a well used to pull the water for the tempering of metal inside the foundry.

On the far end there is a work bench, a small furnace and a small anvil. A jeweler's anvil. El'Galia proudly leads you to her bench, picks up a small golden plate, riddled with filigree and presents it to you.

It seems to be a head... of a lion... beautifully engraved and crafted, with deep inset rubies as eyes...

She smiles and looks at you with a childish look, waiting for approval...

"Yes... it's beautiful... but why do you need me for?"

-"Well, this is for the shield I've been tasked to make for Crown Prince Valian... his favourite animal is a lion... but that's as far as I came... I don't really don't know much about making shields"- she pouts as she says the last few words and looks you with a sad puppy sort of look

You try to bend the steel like you did the bronze for the pauldrons, but it just doesn't seem to work.

El'Galia however, doesn't seem to mind, just sitting there and watching you work.

You finish the shield, but barely, it's just a slab of steel in the general shape of the shield.

+0,1 to MP:Steel

El'Galia bounces up from her seat the moment you are over and takes the shield from you and surveys it.

"Well... I'll just slap up some more filigree and decorations and it will get more... princely." - she says with an unsure smile.

You hang your head in shame and head back into the foundry without saying a word. She follows you up with an inquisitive look and then tends to the shield.

You sigh and take a deep breath of the hot smithy air. Hammering down on the swords you remember your old master... he'd throw you over his knee and administer a stern spanking with the flat end of one of them if he ever saw those swords, no matter you are already in your twenties.

You finish the job and are faced with several, plain, boring and dull-gray swords.

With a tired look on your face you start to polish the swords. It seems that the layer of the dull-gray color is washed away easily and the swords gleam with a new, silvery color. The engravings look better now as well.

It seems, at least, that you haven't lost your touch. You get the swords nice and sharp and take one of them for a test, you try to split one of the hairs from your beard with one, as you heard that the sword of Aeneser the Sagacious could even split a hair from a tiger's back three times!

Unfortunately, you fail to do so and nick yourself on the fingers.

The swords are now in a very good condition... if only the smithing was a little bit better, they would have been wounderful.

You pack up and with some doubt in your heart head out of the almost empty foundry into the city.

(The swords are now at 68 points of quality, while "Great" requires 71... Almost...)

You enter the Dented Shields tavern and hang your cloak near the door. The air is filled with smoke from the hookahs and smells faintly of sage.

There are some belly dancers performing on a stage in the corner opposite of the bar. Long silken drapes are everywhere and there is a questionable amount of velvet on every surface.

You look around and see a booth, separated from the rest of the tavern with more silk. Feldane is sitting in there, and there is someone with him... He motions you over.

You approach the table and recognize the other person at once.
El'Galia's face looks up to you and smiles.
"Hello Alaric! Thanks for the help with that shield today. The Prince liked it."

You wonder what's she's doing here but are interrupted in thought by Feldane

He smiles while taking a hit from the hookah in the middle of the booth.
"Please Alaric, sit down, join us.

Feldane puts down his hookah pipe and raises his angelic voice.

"Yeah, we've all got our days when it's just not going our way." he says and makes a theatrical hand motion.
"It'll probably be better when you're back in your shop, once all this blows over, where you can work in peace. And there's that warforged who helps you..."

You remember you left the shop in Balthazar's hands. Hopefully he did not wreck anything.

El'Galia patiently waits for Feldane to finish his soliloquy. She the turns to you, sidles up and whispers in your ear with a guilty look on her face:

"You should have told me you were planing on going out to a tavern tonight... I wanted to invite you to go with me but you seemed very distressed by your work today so I hesitated... I only asked Feldane to go with me because you know... It gets boring to drink alone."

Feldane raises a glass

"Well, Alaric, here's to you! You're a great guy, hopefully with more luck in smithing tomorrow. May you live a hundred years and then some more!"

You and El'Galia join him in the toast.

"There are some men here to see you."

You feel your brain crack under the pressure of last night's happenings.

"Who?" you inquire, groggily getting out of bed.

"The Royal Guards, it seems." the Warforged replies instantly.

You pick yourself up from the floor and open the door.
Three men are standing outiside, clothed in the purple capes of the royal guard.

"Alaric Tyvin?" one of them asks with a calm voice

You stumble to the dresser and groom your beard. You really look like shit on this particular morning. No matter, you open the dresser and wear your finest clothes. A red wool coat on a flax shirt and some grey trousers which had a hole behind the knee, but it was the best you could afford. You decided against wearing your peacock feather hat.

The guards threw you in a carriage and you started your short journey. In 5 minutes you were at the castles gates and in 5 more you were sitting across a table from the Crown Prince.

He seemed to be in his early twenties and his blonde hair seemed to be reaching his shoulders. He reminded you a bit of Feldane because of the same aristocratic way they both held themselves.

He opened his mouth.
"Thank you for the shield. It is lovely. Now, please sit down."

You nod and take a chair in front of the prince. Wine is served to you, but you make a disgusted face at it remembering last night.

"Perhaps you'd prefer water?" he inquires while sipping out of his cup.

"No thank you, your majesty." you reply, still dazed by your headache

"Anyway, do you know why I called you here?"

"No, your majesty."

"I've heard you were assembling a ragtag militia. Gladiators. Pirates. Nobles fallen from grace. Everyone. Quite a contingent you have ther Master Tyvin."

You feel flattered. Nobody refered to you as "Master" before.

"Yes, I gathered them. Is that a problem?" you ask, trying to be as nice as possible.

"Noooo. Quite the opposite." He gestures with his hands. He clasps them infront of his face and says

"My father... has made a decree, and in the event of attack on Belerin, all City Guards must retreat into the inner Castle. I can't change his decision, but I can help the people of Belerin. Me and my personal guard will fight in the streets in the event of an attack, and maybe my father will come to his senses and send the guard to my aid.

You show up at the tavern in which the mercenaries are currently residing in. Just in time for a showdown of skill, strength and determination. A handwrestling match between one of the Graecian warriors and Atropos. The barbarian horde is smashing their mugs in approval of the duel and Ariel and Alwen are snickering at the foolish men.

The others seem to be around the captain who is telling some story.

You raise a hand and ask for a word. They all stop and listen to you...
How unexpected...

"I have just been notified by the prince that the Town Guard will be posted in the Castle if there is a siege of the town, and only him and his guard will defend Belerin. He has tasked us to defend the people who can not get into the castle!"

Everybody roars up in agreement and raises their mugs to you.

"An laddy, 'ow much is he payin' us?" one of the pirates asks

"Well... Nothing. You'll get payed by the city guard and you can keep any gear that you want made for battle. I'll even make it myself!"

Another uproar, and they all promise to come by your shop tomorrow for their new gear!

You decide to go to the foundry, but notice Atropos sitting all by himself in a corner so you go up to him.

"Hey, are you alright?" you ask him, pulling a chair to his table

"Hyup. Alright as ever." he responds

You size him up with your eyes.
"You aren't very talkative are you?"

He looks at you, stopping mid-sip.
He puts down his cup and rests his elbows on the table whilst letting out a long-winded sigh.

"Words are overrated. Some choose to sharpen their words, I choose to sharpen my sword. Words lie and trick, a sword doesn't. It's always just the truth with a sword. It's either you or the other guy. No lies, no smokescreens, no words. Just swords."

You can't tell if this was a really bad joke on the similarities of the words "sword" and "word" but you decide by looking at his face that it's better not to ask and stand up.

As you enter the foundry, you are greeted by all the noise from yesterday. You take a look at the notice board and rip down a paper.

3 Steel Cuirasses for Granitewood.

Feeling up to the challenge?

Roll three d100s if so.

You cast the cuirasses, still with a pounding headache. You feel your head pulsating with each and every strike of the hammer. It's not going to be your best work, but you'll damned if you'll let it be crap again.

After some hours of work in the inhuman conditions of the Foundry you have in front of yourself three cuirasses, displayed near the work bench.

>>25975353

You start engraving the cuirasses, drawing simple lines and patterns on them. Nothing fancy, no need to go overboard.

As you finish, you survey your work. Three cuirasses, engraved with the city's own coat of arms and some ornaments. Fit for a lieutenant of the army, but not much more.

You can try to make them better by polishing or repoussing something into them.

You polish the cuirasses with all your might but only bring out some of the shine out. It seems that your steel working capabilities are not as good as you hoped them to be.
However, you remain headstrong and with a lot of polish oil and some rags you manage to get a good amount of shine out of the cuirasses.

>>25975406

You've never repoussed before, but you are familiar with the process and decide to try it out. You turn the cuirasses around and hammer out a small design on them, nothing fancy, just some ornamentals around the coat of arms which you engraved. This seems, goes naturally for you and you get a really nice cuirass.
However, it just lack that "wow" factor.
Another pretty good piece.

+ 0,3 on polishing
+ 0,6 on Repousse
+ 0,2 on Smithing
But you remain unshaken, you are determined to make something really good and go to the notice board.

Already tired from your drinking last night and being continuously faced with your mediocrity you do a rather shabby job on the daggers. Your strikes with hammer aren't precise and it seems like you just don't care anymore. The daggers come out uneven and slightly brittle.

You quench them too slowly and the metal loses some of it's natural resilience. You cup your face with your hands and sink down on the bench near yourself.

However, you pick yourself up and decide to finish the job.

>>25975505
You feel bad for the trappers who will get these shabby knives and you try really hard to engrave something nice on them. So you engrave a stag's head in the pommel and several nice patterns on the sheath of the dagger.

Now the only thing left is to sharpen them
another 3d100 roll please

Rolled 11, 3, 28 = 42

>>25975582
Sharpening!
>>
>>25975598
I think we should stop drinking.
>>
>>25975598

The good news is that if the trappers get mad about these knives, at least they can't stab us.
>>
>>25975598

You feel completely disheartened by your work today and just run over the daggers with a grindstone a few times. They are barely sharper than a kitchen knife, but you just don't care. You feel exhausted and slightly down in the blues from your failures at work.

Maybe tomorrow will be better. You'll be in your own shop, with your own tools and Balthazar...

Say... the sun already set... didn't you have to be somewhere?

I'll give you a 0,4 on Engraving.
That's the best I can do, the rest was crap.

------------------------------------

You suddenly remember: El'Galia

She's probably waiting you at the Two Moons Tavern. And it has started raining. Just your rotten luck.

You really start questioning if you are cursed these last few days or is it just bad luck.

You tie your cowl below your neck and make for the Tavern. The rain is pounding hard and you are soaked halfway there.
However it is interesting to see the streets empty like this, not a soul, everybody too busy preparing for the war with the Orcs. You look around... maybe it's a bit too empty. It's a bit eerie.

Finally you reach the Tavern and enter. Not a lot of patrons tonight, except El'Galia. And Ariel and Alwen.
The three of them are sitting by the furnace in the warmest part of the tavern, and even though the weather is crap, all three look incredibly beautiful.

"Well hello there my hero. Here's the drink I owe you." she says as she pours you a goblet of wine and all three giggle simultaneously. They seem to be drunk. Or at least a bit tipsy.

>>25975727
Sarah is coming back in a fortnight.
>>
>>25975786
Let's keep our head whilst getting all the Elves really drunk.
>>
>>25975786
Let's see if we can't charm all three tonight. We are about to go to war! We may as well get some kisses beforehand. Maybe it'll inspire us to make something needed against the orcs.
>>
>>25975896
>not staying faithful to Sarah

Im disappoint
>>
>>25975917
Haven't you heard? Elf kisses are like licking toads for blacksmiths. We get inspired by all sorts of shit.

Kidding.

Though something light-weight, with a sharp edge and can handle a lot of stress or aging would be a fine weapon for anyone.
>>
>>25975829
You sit down with them and Ariel and Alwen side up to you, one from each side, and take you by the hands, still giggling.

You laugh with them and drink your cup, albeit slowly. During the evening you sing, laugh, talk and dance, all while refilling their cups and sipping from yours.

At one point Ariel takes you to the side and gestures to sit next to her. As you do she scooches uncomfortably close to you and lays her head on your shoulder.

"Tell me Hero, what are you going to make me tomorrow? What are your big strong hands"- she says whilst flexing her own lean, long hands - going to do... I mean make me?"

You take a deep breath planning to answer this... She smells like lilacs...

Before you can muster the willpower to answer Arwen hears that and comes up to you two
"No." - She pulls you towards herself.- "What are you going to make me? - she asks while hugging your arm- "Is it going to be pretty?" she says whilst frowning in the cutest manner you've ever seen.

It's getting increasingly obvious that they are really drunk now.

El'Galia voices from across the room...
So?
What are you going to make them?

>CHOOSE YOUR ANSWER WELL /tg/
>>
>>25975970
We shall devise for them a weapon unseen and unheard of.

A bow with levers and pulleys that allow the user to focus their strength on aiming and precision, and not on strength.

We will make them the first composite bows.
>>
>>25975970
>What are your hands going to do..I mean make me?

Nice, I hope there's a harem ending to this.
>>
>>25975970

>>
>>25975970
What do we know about each girl that could tell us what weapon that would be perfect for them?
>>
>>25976145

They are both archers.
Friends of El'Galia, and very, very pretty.

I suppose it's just going to be a matter of how lucky you are.
>>
>>25976040
Should I go with this or do you have some cool pickup line you would like to use?
>>
>>25976163
Many we could smith them some ceremonial golden arrows?

Or we could just ask them what they want.

You think about it in between them bringing the bottle up to your lips and giving you wine and after a few minutes answer:

"There is nothing on this Earth that I could make, not from gold, silver nor other materials, that would shine as brightly as the fair maidens around me."

Both of the archers give out a slight "daawww" and squeeze your arms stronger. El'Galia comes up to you and sits in front of you, as beautiful as ever, she looks into your eyes and asks

"Do you really mean that?"

You smile and take her hand.
"Yes. Yes I do.”

Arwen and Ariel stand up, and you just now notice how scantily dressed they are now they aren’t wearing their armor.

One of them produces a bottle of clear liquid from her bags and opens it.
She slightly angles it and sloppily drinks a few gulps whilst spilling some over herself and proceeds to pass the bottle to the other.
As they sit again, on both sides of you, El’Galia takes the bottle and moves into your lap.
She looks into your eyes and hugs you.

“My Hero…” she whispers and takes a long chug from the bottle before bringing it up to your lips.

As the liquid touches your tongue, you note that it tastes completely vile, you have never in your life tasted something like that and it almost makes you gag. But then your eyes lock with El’Galia’s and you overpower your instinct to do so.

She removes the empty bottle from your lips… and shows it to the two archers.

“He drank all of it… “ they giggle like one again

All three of them have to help you up… “Let’s go my Hero… you deserve… something for your efforts…” she says as she kisses you passionately and you close your eyes when you feel her soft lips on yours…

When you open them, you are in your bed and Balthazar is towering over you.

“Are you alright?” he inquires

“What? How did I get here? What the time?” you return more questions

“I asked: Are you alright? You were brought here by El’Galia and two more elves an hour ago, it’s currently 3 hours after midday.”

“I’m… Great…” you reply as your head hits the pillow again…

I think we should end today's thread on this... note.

I'll be around for a couple more hours if you have any questions.

Anyway, the next thread will be tomorrow, at the same time.
Unless anybody objects, I can move it around a bit since I'm free for the whole day.

No questions?
Oh well, I'll just surmise that I made such a good thread that any questions would be excess,
>>
>>25976677
when is the orc attack gonna kick off?

will there be much build up, or will it just slam into the city straight away?
>>
>>25976677
Is this your first quest OP?
>>
>>25976713
Possibly next thread or the one after that.
There will be build up as the human kingdoms try to rally against the skirmishing orcs, while unbeknownst to them a horde marches from the south.

Yeah, and expect some action.

>>25976738
Yeah. (if we don't count the few civilization ones)
Is it that obvious?
>>
>>25976760
No, in fact you did a pretty good job seeing as you've taken over someone elses quest.

i'll make sure I stick around tomorow for the next installment!
