Some time ago we had a brainstorming thread about a setting where everyone wears all-covering protective suits almost the entire time, to the extent that showing your face would be a weird private thing.

Let's discuss that type of setting again. Fantasy or sci-fi, your choice. Reasoning behind it can be whatever you like as well.

Pic possibly related.

One time I thought up a story of a witch's curse on a family of metalsmiths that afflicted them with a type of agoraphobia. Basically they had an irresistable urge to wear full-body armor and if they tried to fight it they basically went insane and other horrible things (for example one of them ended up diving into a vat of molten lead to cover his body).

The problem is that it's contagious if you look upon the uncovered face of a suffer. The story was about a son of the family who falls in love with a beautiful female ranger, who at first argues with and dislikes this towering metal tin-can but eventually falls for him after he saves her life. However he constantly fights off her advances because he doesn't want her to suffer his fate, but ultimately she gets him to tell his story and let her accept his burden.

The ending of the story would be a family portrait of a man and woman in ornate full-body armor with matching helmet wings.

Explanation being, that as an Exile your first priority was getting yourself a decent vacsuit, which were all monomolecularly skintight and you never took them off, Exile culture was all about expressing yourself through customizing your vacsuit (or was it Skin2) and having unsuited relations with someone was the highest form of trust (this is of course, pre-Tali).

>showing your face would be a weird private thing.
It wasn't translated to any universal language, but some time ago Polish writer Jacek Piekara wrote a handful of short stories taking place in a distant future, on the planet called "Tauriga".

People there had masks for most occasions, and depended on what mask they were wearing, what they said had different meaning.

For example: there was a mask of "Insane Warrior" that was all about fight. You wore it, everyone treated you like someone looking for a fight. Or, there was a mask of "Benevolent Sage", which meant that you were treating your discutant as half-serious joker, no matter what he said.

There were rituals and customs, special masks, rhythm of talking & much more. Interesting setting related to what you're depicting here OP.

I maintain each character becomes obsessed with armor of their own type. Everyone has some metal parts to them, but not everyone has full plate.

Like, if a prostitute would get the curse then she'd get some kind of lacy full-body outfit with lots of frills and shit, maybe a cape, and then some thigh-high metal boots, a metal bra and a facemask/helmet with a beautiful face on it.
>>
>>25971519
I believe the correct response here is: FUND IT.
>>
>>25971592

That's the idea. The armor matches your profession, body-type, build, personality, etc.

For example let's say you're a person growing up in this. You start out as a little blue Knight with a simple visor and thick leather for your crotch so you can take it off quickly. As you grow up you have to trade in your armour every year as you grow until you reach puberty and start modifying it to resemble you a bit more. For example if you get in fights often at school you might add thicker armor to the legs and arms to punch and kick harder, or if you're getting bullied you'd add spikes and stuff to defend yourself, or switch out parts for leather to make yourself more flexible and lighter if you're athletic.

Eventually you'd pick a profession, let's say... heavy engineering and chemical handling. Your helm would be modified with a primitive rebreather, a glassy visor, and your hands would be covered in heat-resistant fabric and your armour would feature tubes running along it. Inside the tubes would be water used as a coolant that connects to a big back-mounted clockwork tank full of water and a ton of ice-cubes that are swished about with a paddle to circulate armour your body and keep you cool in your armor during welding and so forth. Or you could switch it out for a canister full of different chemicals and construction equipment, or whatever.

Or if you became a dock-worker or fisherman, you'd have a big old-school diving suit only more elaborate, and walk along the bay floor harpooning fish to drag back out of the ocean. Stuff like that I guess.

>>
>>25972401

The curse has a minor effect which makes the wearer fully comfortable in their self-made/chosen armor. They can sleep, rest, work out and do pretty much anything they could do unarmored just as well.

This is a very important detail IMO

I'm also suggesting:

The curse cannot spread to another person until the first person affected has gone through the process fully. (IE once you see someone's face you won't spread it until you've become mentally compelled to wear the armor yourself)
>>
>>25972373
I think the idea of everyone using found objects would be more entertaining than them just buying up suits of armor no one other than the riches nobles could afford.

That is the one big problem here; How many peasants can actually afford a suit of full plate? Most peasants can barely afford to feed themselves and their families, so what this curse will do is cause most people to go crazy, livestock and farms will wither and die since they don't be tended anymore, nobles lose their fortunes since they no longer have any income and no one to tend to their land, ect.

Realistically, this is a crazy horrible curse that will kill most people alive and cripple the rest finanically.

How does the logistics work in this case? There will still be shortages outside of where the wizard was, and any time he goes to cast a spell he has to deal with the Failure rate the armor gives him.

Most professions wouldn't have a suit of armor that would be suitable for them. Also, this means cost for custom-made armor, which will likely offset much of the price diffrence.

The problem with "MAGIC!", is that it can solve everything. If you don't put limits on what it can do, then your campaign ends up in the crapper when your full-plate wearing party of Wizards walks into the room, drop their tower shields onto the floor for cover, then end up slaughtering everything in sight since their AC is going to end up in crazy places.

If a normal tunic and breeches classify as armor, then most of my problems with this are moot since everyone is wearing armor anyways.
>>

This.

Wizards = cloth
Melee fighter types = plate
Light skirmish/ranged types = leather or chain
Rogue types = leather

For civilians it would vary depending.

Just because it's all covering does not mean it's a full plate.

>gradually builds over the course of a few hours

>the sufferer feels a mental compulsion to wear full-body armor, whether self-made or received as a gift
>the sufferer's armor reflects their profession, personality, build and is often decorated to make it feel unique
>the armor must be at least 60% metal and can encorporate other materials like cloth, leather and other clothing types, however it must have a fully-enclosed helm and reveal no skin
>the sufferer feels very safe and secure within their armor and does not feel uncomfortable, even able to sleep within it peacefully
>the sufferer cannot steal or otherwise unlawfully claim materials or parts to create the armor, however they can mine or scavenge it from un-owned land or unstaked claims as long as it's legal
>the sufferer can remove their armor for up to an hour every day in order to bathe and clean themselves
>the sufferers are well-aware that their Curse can cause chaos if spread and so take steps to prevent accidental transmission, such as using locks to keep their helmets in place or carving runes and carms into their armor to prevent accidental or forced removal

And not bathe? What if bathing became a bit of a roman thing?

Alteratively, do you still get time removed by partial exposure. It can take half an hour to remove plate, and not much less to remove things such as leather or chain. Maybe partial exposure is okay for short stints, such as taking gauntlets off for fifteen minutes to have full fine motor control, although their mind is screaming at them to get the damn things back on?

The town, somewhat strangely, thrives because of the curse.

After the first incidents with invaders, the town got rid of its guard/army. Now, every time a menacing force looms over the city, the mayor goes out wearing his negotiation helmet. Unlike the usual headpieces used by citizens, this one is projected in order to easily allow the user to reveal his or her face.

The mayor approaches the opposing army in full plate and the negotiator helmet, but carries no weapon. The seers and wizards do not detect offensive enchantments or spells. It's just a middle-aged man in an overly elaborate plate suit, trying to negotiate the survival and welfare of his town.

The mayor enters the general's tent. Talks to him politely, and asks the invaders to leave or suffer the consequences. The invading general laughs at him, pointing out that they don't even have a defense force, and tells him to leave. At this point, the mayor removes his helmet, looks the general in the eye, and says "See you in a week".

He leaves the tent, helmless, and, gathering every bit of willpower in his mind, manages to walk around the whole invader camp while not fully covered. When he thinks everyone has seen his face, the mayor covers his face, and walks back to his town.

5 days later, General Gurgthrôk the Merciless, Bane of Beasts and Slayer of Millions, meekly walks into the mayor's office and asks for a job for him and his band, so they can make their own customised armor.

The scratch of quills stopped abruptly as the heavy oak door swung open. Mayor Frankart looked up from his latest edict as Gilda walked in, his secretary.

"Mister mayor," her gentle voice asked shyly with a hollow ring, "You have visitors."

"Thank you, Gilda." Frankart nodded, his helm clanking with his breastplate slightly from the act, "Send them right in would you?"

As she turned to leave, he made a mental note of the designs on her leg-lames. He'd have to ask her about that later, they looked fairly new. Setting his quill in the inkpot, he capped it and placed a hand atop another, looking to the door.

The woman that entered was a forigner, that much was painfully obvious. Frankart reserved judgement however, at the blatant bareness, and tilted his helm up in greeting.

"Good evening, ma'am. I am the mayor of this City," Frankart greeted, rising to extend a hand warmly, "Mayor Frankart, of house Razav. What may I do for you today?"

The woman looked at his hand for a moment, before slowly shaking it half heartedly. As she sat, he took his seat as well, crossing his hands once more. Already, Frankart could feel this would be an awkward conversation.

"I have come from the neighboring community of Faehaven," she began, speaking as if she had rehearsed this speech twenty times in the waiting room, "And we wish to express our apprehension at your recent increase of Soldiers."

The Mayor paused for a moment. Frankart was unsure how to proceed, should he tell her? Make something up?

"I assume your superiors know nothing about our city, then?" He asked, cursorily.

With a huff, she blinked a few times in confusion, "of course. We have been-"

"Obviously not," he cut her off, tapping the side of his helmet, "or else you'd know about the curse over our town."

The lady seemed to freeze in time, before slowly smiling, "I'm sorry, what?"
>>
>>25974402
">>25974402
Oh yes..." The Mayor tilted his helmet down, the bearded visage on the sugarloaf helm growing grave, "The people of this town are cursed. Cursed to forever be bound to these suits of armor. We haunt this town..." Slowly, he pulled off his gauntlet, revealing nothing beneath it.

With a shriek, the women flipped out of her chair, knocking her head on the floor with a 'thud'. The mayor was too busy laughing to notice immediately she had been knocked out cold, but when he did, he laughed even harder.

"Sir?" Asked Gilda, looking in, "Is everything all-... Sir.." He looked at Frankart with a disapproving tilt of her sallet, "Did you do the whole 'Ghost Hand' thing again?"

"Oh, forgive me, Gilda," Frankart replied, putting his prosthetic gauntlet back on, "but it is far too much fun. Would you call in Skaal and Gregor, and prepare accommodations for our guest?"

With a sigh, Gilda nodded, "At once, Mister Mayor. Oh, and, you have a surprise visitor."

What happened next came as only a minor shock to the mayor. He had expected pride, or maybe anger, but when the Bandit Prince Gurgthrôk entered his office, he was a man exhausted and beaten.

"Gilda, would you be a dear and fetch some Brandy?" Asked Frankart, "I have a feeling our friend here is in need of a drink." As his aid left, he rose and fixed the chair knocked back by the ignorant diplomat, "Please, take a seat."

On the topic of partial exposure, this also brings up the issue of Child birth. Child birth takes more than an hour most often than not.

I assume maternity armor would be a special thing passed down through generations and such, with special pieces made to mitigate the effects of carrying a child and the eventually water-break (or however it's supposed to be said in this tense).

I think Partial exposure can be done, but it's just very uncomfortable, bordering on emotionally traumatizing. Hence, bath sex is the way to go, as it's A) A fun way to get clean and B) You don't have to worry about the stress of partial exposure.

As it very well may be after face recognition in computers surpasses human abilities, and every inch of civilized territory has smart electronics that can track faces to an unprecedented level.

Faces and retinas would become something to hide if you didn't want someone to instantly look you up and added to a database. Even an off hand glance at a face with enhanced vision may automatically log the fact and add whatever information that had been passively garnered archive to sell to corporate interests or part of a governmental monitoring system.

For the clean suit idea, you just have to take note of the rise of antibiotic resistant diseases and the idea of extremely dangerous extraterrestrial pathogens. In Korea and China, it is very common to see people doing their daily routines with surgical masks to avoid infection; in the future this may expand until it is the norm. Escalation due to past epidemics may encourage protection up to NBC gear levels.

Also holy shit, it didn't break the filesize limit.

Um...I used to have an extensive explanation of a universe that vaguely involved this on /d/, though it seems the thread has been pruned. The basic premise, though, was that specialized power armors (I refer to them as "nanomachine-lattice hyperalloys") take to their user better the more often they're worn, so many who live and die by combat in these power armors basically live in them nonstop. Some have even sealed themselves inside permanently.

There's a place where everyone is clad in steel head-to-toe, their faces masked, their body completely encased in metal. This is to keep the Devil out. You see, anybody could be the Devil, because nobody's face can be seen; until two people share the intensely important, intimately private, never-before-done* act of showing each other their faces, there's no way for one to know if the other is really the Devil. If the Devil sees your face, he steals your soul, and your armored body continues to walk and talk and live as before, but it'll never allow its empty face and soulless body to be seen again. However, if you're lucky enough to see the face of and have your face seen by another person who is not the Devil, the two of you share in something so profound and empowering that together you banish the Devil and free all of the people from their masked armor. Sadly, obviously, nobody has managed to do this yet.... *The other one is always the Devil.

"So, I've just got marry a girl from Eisenvania? No trouble!"
That was what you said. In your quest to acquire the family inheritance from your four scheming brothers you had happily accepted your father's challenge, though as you left the family manner you had noticed a smirk on the dying old man's face. Additionally, though they had also been offered the chance your brothers had suddenly seemed to lose their nerve. You'd mused that perhaps they were feigning disinterest in an attempt to throw you off.

However, once you arrived in the small, peaceful town of Eisenvania you soon found out just what your brothers and father had known about.

You were standing in the local tavern, finely dressed but concerned. Your money and handsome face, charisma, and skill with horse and bow would have won over any woman, but here you faced a rather interesting conundrum.

The quiet town was cursed with a strange sickness, causing all those who lived there to cover themselves with steel plate and leather strap, completely turning into metallic knight-people. The fine maidens you had sought were not spared, and a quick scouting had revealed three armoured bachelorettes suitable for bedding.

After talking to all three, you had informed them of the situation and explained you were looking for an ideal partner, and that you would happily annul the marriage if it didn't work out. As to the curse itself, you'd like to see how things go first. All three had accepted your terms, and now awaited your decision.

(cont'd)
>>
>>25981363
The first, the most outwardly feminine, was Bricca. She had a very curved suit of armor, designed to announce her shapely body and bosom, and had legs and arms covered in thin, dainty-looking plates. Her waist radiated a rosy-red dress that split at the front to show off a tight-looking crotchplate and leather leggings tipped with steel pointed boots, and her helmet resembled the portrait of a princess and decorated with angelic wings that almost resembled...pigtails? Bricca was friendly, shy, clingy and was instantly smitten with you when you first met her.

The second was the witch Karen. Apparently a visitor to the town who had come to research the curse but ended up infected, Karen was dressed in simple leather and black metal armor that heightened her thin frame, with thick leather gloves allowing her to write effectively with a quill. Her small body was draped in a black wizard's cloak and her helmet, featuring a steel witch hat decorated with engravings of stars and astrological signs, was a small visored face with a carving of a petite pair of lips, apparently to aid in her spellcasting. Carrying a staff, Karen was an intelligent yet passive woman who was interested in leaving the town, and had plenty of supportive qualities that could make her a good partner. What's more, she seemed to find you interesting.

The third option belonged to the towering metal behemoth that stood watch on the edge of town, Salana. Resembling a walking castle, the bronze giant bore pauldrons like turrets, massive stomping boots like dragon feet, and a fearsome-looking helmet that resembled a wrathful god. The only hint of her femininity was the curved torso and elegantly-spiked breastplate, and her surprisingly high voice. Salana had been mostly silent when you had spoken to her, however once you finished she had eagerly accepted your offer and awaited you final decision.

So here you were, deep in thought.

This image was made prior to Dark Souls, but now that you mention it...

>>25978881

Okay, I'll try, but it's kind of hard what with no /d/ archive to base this off of.

In the near-future, a great deal of Earth has become urbanized as a result of population growth, particularly in developing countries, Following the invention of devoted nanomachines to fight cancer and other diseases, said nanomachines quickly find purpose in military and law enforcement applications, beginning an arms race - but not an arms race between countries, more like an arms race between the governors and the governed - state governments versus private enterprise. Applications are developed for control, regeneration, and even variable geometry systems, but the most important development is that of new "hyperalloys" generated by nanomachines, with various properties that make them excellent for power armor development.

Some of these properties include being highly ductile (Almost liquid in form), high heat ablation, high resistance to kinetic energy penetrators, nigh-immunity to chemical energy weapons, and relatively light weight. Using specialized nanomachines, these hyperalloys can be laced with a 'lattice' giving it the ability to be manipulated through expansion and contraction - effectively as an extension of the user's muscular nerves. While initially used as armored control systems for conventional vehicles, it was found that the most efficient layouts were composed entirely of this new nanomachine-lattice hyperalloy (By the way, just a word of note: Early lattices were grid-based, but later-generation models use a trimesh. Other experiments have been made in better lattices, but most are only in prototype phase) in the form of power armors. These power armors gave their users incredible strength and durability, and even a slight boost in speed. This proved quite beneficial for entering buildings and other fortifications where enemies are often garrisoned.

>>25987136

Early power armor designs were slow, loud, and bulky, but as technology regarding them developed and more experience was garnered, they became slimmer, faster, and stealthier.

Nanomachine-lattice hyperalloys are also notable for a rather distinct property - As they are worn by the same user repeatedly, they gain more knowledge of its user's movements and effectively can anticipate and mesh with their motions better. This leads to various usage habits. The first is that nanomachine-lattice hyperalloys cannot be easily exchanged - in fact, doing so is highly advised against, as user incompatibility can potentially prove fatal (It is nonetheless performed more often than it should, however). The second result of this development is that users generally want to wear their nanomachine-lattice hyperalloy whenever they possibly can. Ordinary operatives may exit their suits from time to time, but the most hardened mercenaries and bounty hunters never do unless absolutely necessary. Some even seal themselves inside and act as if it is their permanent body. Memories of these peoples' faces and natures are lost over time and conflict, and they are better recognized by their armors than by who - or what - they truly are, nonetheless the stuff of legends and constantly vied for in employment.

The third aspect of this development, however, is more of a blessing than a curse. When nanomachine-lattice hyperalloys are activated without a user inside, they act autonomously based on the user behavior they have 'learned'. While not as quick on the draw as their originals, and being rather difficult to train effectively, they are nonetheless a cheap and effective alternative to flesh-and-blood soldiers, and many mercenary squadrons are not truly a group - they are simply one good operative who trains many armors.

It is also worth noting that even if the pilot is killed, the armor can still operate until it is ultimately destroyed. This can lead to some eerie situations...

If the birds chirping outside was any indication, today was a beautiful day. A sliver of sun punched through the window, landing gently upon the sleeping form of Gilda and her betrothed, Ariah Staam. A tiny pin of light made its way into the slit on her helmet, and slowly Gilda came too completely, rising slowly. The soft 'clack' of her oiled armor wasn't enough to rouse her love, so she gently made her way from the bedroom to the great hall.

Castle Razav was one of the larger estates near Eisenvania, owning to the ruling family that once dominated the region making their home here. While the Razav's were a shadow of their former selves, the Curse having decimated them when they were afflicted to begin with, the splendor and elegance of the Razav Halls was peerless.

"Good Morning, Madame." came the voice of Gregor, the Knight-Errant of Razav. Always the Charmer, he bowed to the common-born Gilda despite the class difference. Blushing under her sallet, she returned with a curtsey and a "Good Morning" as well.

"Is Master Staam late to rise, again?" Gregor asked, resting a hand on the hilt of his longsword, casually leaning into his armor as if expecting to chew the fat all day.

"Unfortunately," Gilda replied, sighing, "Such a late riser, paired with being a heavy sleeper... I'm not sure I could wake him if the sky started falling."

With a deep chuckle, Gregor nodded, "Yes, yes, I remember when he was-" he was cut off however, by a loud crash, and as he spun, he saw a still-drunk Skaal fall out of his dormatory.
>>
>>25994524

"What in the Nine Hells are you doing?" He scolded the drunk, who dragged himself back to his feet wearily on the banister, "Drunk, in the Lords house, I will have you flogged for this you rascal."

"Yeh'd do no sush thin'." Replied the bearded man, who after a pause, looked over Gregor's shoulder towards Gilda, "E's da yuh, Geel?"

"Hello, Skaal." Gilda replied, trying to keep from laughing, "How did you know it was me?"

Poking his ears, the monk smiled, "M'eyes may b' shite, bu ma ears knows yuh breathin' when day's 'ear it."

"Off with you, knave," Gregor hissed, "Go get yourself cleaned up."

Waving a hand, Skaal sneered at Gregor, "Ahn' wa if I dun't? Ya gon smack m' gobber? Laddie I'd fight ya any day o da week, punch ya straight inna ya mum's womb, armor'n' all!"

Excusing herself from the spectical, before she had to watch the Knight and the Monk come to their regular blows, she made her way down to the large table laid out in the center of the hall.

"Have a good day, My lady." Gregor added as she walked past, Skaal pipping up "Ahn' don' worry 'bou' Aar', We'ah take care o' him." Before returning to his argument with Gregor.
>>
>>25994532
The castle began to come alive, slowly but surely, as the Mayor made his way to the dinning hall, nose in a stack of papers. As Gilda served herself, she chanced a look over at her soon-to-be Father-in-Law, and the man she worked for. Almost by accident, he looked up, tilting his helm in a 'smile'.

"Good morning, my dear." He greeted happily, "I hope you slept well?"

"Of course, Mayor Sir," she responded, taking a small helping of fresh fruit and a slice of butt, "Thank you for your hospitality."

"Oh, do not mention it my dear," he said, returning to his papers, "What's mine is yours, you're part of the family already. I can scare imagine Mary without you to look after her."

Breakfast was fairly colourful, all things considered, such as the loud clamour of Gregor and Skaal flying down the stairs, and Mary tackling Gilda off her chair in excitement. The youngest of the Razav was like a little sister to Gilda, and was set on following Gilda to see her Father today. Of course, ever the late riser, Ariah Staam was last to join, affectionately cupping Gilda's helm with his arm and touching his head to hers before setting down to ravage anything that hadn't already been eaten.

There are female users, but it's often hard to tell - among females there's a lot bigger of a gap between the good ones and the "just trying to get by" ones.

As regulation regarding hyperalloys has yet to arise, the general idea is that "if you can earn it, you can use it". In private and mercenary systems, this is usually done by garnering enough money to purchase one as a different type of soldier or pilot, but in the government they are often given based on superiors' orders.

In case you're wondering, the universe is heavily inspired by a dream I had ages ago at night, and while I don't remember who the hell I was anymore (Perhaps it was third-person? Or maybe I was just some random PMC operative that didn't have a hyperalloy?) I do distinctly remember a red-haired woman who wore these hyperalloys. She wasn't exactly one of the permanent users though, just a part-time who used the money to fund other things.
