Back after a long break, it's VALKYRIAN MERCS QUEST!

Archive: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Valkyrian%20Mercs%20Quest
Pastebin: http://pastebin.com/t7083HCY

Don't know what Valkyria Chronicles is? Check it out here! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valkyria_Chronicles or http://valkyria.wikia.com/wiki/Valkyria_Wiki

You are JAGER STURMFUHRER, leader of the fledgling mercenary company DEMONS OF RANDGRIZ. In addition to fighting Imps for money and vengeance, you have your own private mission to hunt down Karla, your former fiance who sided with the Imperials and destroyed your home.

You first arrived in the Federation nation of Albion to help defend it against a possible amphibious attack. However, your boots barely hit the deck before you were assigned a mission to break up a spy ring. However, through a chain of extraordinary events, you not only smashed the spy ring apart, but also managed to capture an Imperial u-boat (mostly) intact, and figh off an Imperial amphibious invasion by defeating their leader, Belkan Knight Sir Fleisher.

You then moved on to Ustio, where you helped the beleaguered defenders fend off an Imperial offensive and stage a counterattack. While there, you also took care of a personal mission for Qyburn, got a new weapon called the Buzzbomb, recruited some new squad members, and helped Isolde regain her honor by defeating the Knight leading the Imperial forces in the area, breaking the back of the Imperial offensive.

You then returned to Gallia to help the Loyalists fight the GRA. You also found out that your grandmother and a group of Darcsen refugees have begun rebuilding your ancestral home. You then participated in a mission to rescue Archduchess Cordelia from GRA captivity. However, Sam was grievously wounded during the mission, causing you to realize how you really felt about her and reciprocating her feelings for you.

No offense Merc, but this sounds unbelievably cheesy.

Anyways, I had a real great 4th of July weekend, and some bros of mine also commissioned some VMQ fanart as well! It's only Sam and Tarin stuff, but it's still something, right?

There's 4 total so I'll start off posting those first before getting back to the quest proper.

You wake up, feeling oddly refreshed, as if this was the first time in a long time you've gotten a decent night's sleep. However, this feeling seems to clash with the fact that you're currently sitting in the middle of a military police lockup with Sam and a few other Demons.

You're honestly not sure how you ended up in this situation, and you're pretty sure you don't want to. The other Demons seem to still be passed out in their alcohol-induced stupor, so asking them for clarification seems out of the question.

Well, at least snuggled up against your shoulder, snoring softly.

As much as you want to, you still feel a bit reluctant about waking up Sam. She smile on her face seems to indicate that she's either having a really good dream, or that she's just really enjoying the moment.

You take a deep breath and start poking her in the cheek.

"Hey. Hey Sam. Sam. Hey Sam."

>Hahaha, oh wow. Well, if you're going to critfail, you might as well do it on a low-risk action, right?

You see Sam frown as you poke her in the cheek, and what comes next, you honestly didn't see coming. You're not sure if she purposely did it or if it was some weird, subconscious reflex, but without missing a beat Sam's fist swings out and socks you right in the face, already adding on to the bruises and scrapes and aches you've already picked up.

And considering she's a lancer, her punches hit stupidly hard. Your vision explodes in stars and suddenly goes black.

You're not sure how much time has passed when you regain consciousness, but Sam is now awake and stretching, as if she had just woken up as well.

"Oh, morning, Cap." Sam smiles, kissing you on the forehead. "Looks like, we uh, got in some trouble again. Oh man, and it looks like you got a nasty hit, too."

"Well, it still stings a bit." You say, rubbing the bruise. "Maybe you could heal it up with a kiss...?"

"And you think I act like a kid." Sam laughs before leaning forward and kissing you on the cheek as well.

"Heh, thanks." You grin stupidly. Honestly, you don't have the heart to tell her about the true source of that injury. Plus, your pride as man was also against it. "Anyways, if you haven't noticed, we're in an MP lockup right now. Any idea how we got in here...?"

"Uh, well." Sam frowns, trying to recall what happened last night as well. "It's a bit fuzzy for me, but I think it involved a tank and lots of collateral damage."

"Yeah, that sounds about right." You nod.

"Been enjoying yourselves, have you?" You hear a very formal and very familiar voice speak out from behind you. You spin around and instinctively salute General Wellings.

"Um, I think I can explain things, sir." You say.

"No need." General Wellings opens up a file and puts his reading glasses on. "According to eyewitness testimony last night, you stole Gilbert Gassenarl's personal tank, took it on a joyride through all of Randgriz, knocked down a statue of Baldren Gassenarl, tied it to the tank, set it on fire, and drove it off a cliff. Theft and destruction of military and civilian property are the least of the charges against you."

"So, we're getting medals, right?" You say jokingly, though the General just gives you a look that makes you want to wince. "We're screwed, aren't we?"

"Hardly." The General gives you a sly grin. "That particular tank was not yet formally captured by the Gallian army, meaning TECHNICALLY it was still GRA property, meaning you were still technically doing your jobs."

"Um, thanks?" You blink. "Do you really like us that much?"

"Oh no, if it were up to me, I'd let you stew in here for another week. But then I'd have an angry mob on my hands if I formally punished you for this." The General sighs. "You're only in here for the standard 24 hour holding period, which expired twenty minutes ago. You're all free to go."

"Hey, cool." You turn around. "Sam, let's get the rest of these losers awake and moving, and see if we can find some decent coffee."

"Sure thing, Cap!" Sam smiles.

"Is there... something different between you two?" General Wellings asks, frowning, trying to figure out what was bothering him.

Since the main conflict, Gallian tanks have seemed to improved since VC1's era though they'd need some customizing if they're to go up against Imperial stuff head on.

You insides freeze colder than ice. Deep down, you suspected that this would happen someday, but now that it's confronting you in the face, you honestly don't know how to deal with it. Before, all your prospective marriages and engagements were arranged by your parents, so there was no need to have to formally announce your relationships to the other family because everybody already knew everything. This was uncharted territory you were steaming into here, making you feel nervous.

"Hey Sam!" You yell a bit too loudly. "What's your opinion on this?!"

"Ah well..." Sam laughs awkwardly. She obviously still holds a healthy mix of respect and fear of her father. "MeandJageraretotallytogethernowandweloveeachotherverymuchandtheresnothingyoucandoaboutit!"

Well, shit.

"I see." General Wellings narrows his eyes and turns his gaze on you. "For your sake I hope you live up to her, and MY, expectations."

"T-thanks, Dad."

"So, I don't need to do anything to earn your blessing?" You ask. "No hunting trip or 'family' outing or anything like that?"

"Oh, we're going on the hunting trip, all right." The General grins. "If you pull this off then I'll never lodge an objection to your relationship ever again. Meet me in my office in and hour."

He then looks at the rest of the Demons sprawled around the cell.

"Actually, make it two."

With that, General Wellings spins on his heel and marches out of the room, leaving you and Sam alone with the Demons.

Checking your options, you suppose that you've got enough time to get cleaned up, get some breakfast, and even take Wotjek for a walk, and still have plenty of time to make it to the General's office.

The first issue is finding a place to get cleaned up. Gotta look presentable, after all.

You decide to just head back to the Vergeltung, which is docked on the lake shore. It's a bit far, but it's familiar, plus that's where Wotjek is at anyways.

"Ah, it's good to see you, Captain." Davos nods as you step aboard. "We heard some rather 'interesting' stories about your post battle celebrations."

"Yeah, well, they're probably true for all I know." You sigh. "Just stopping by to get get cleaned up. Gotta meet the General again today."

"A good idea, sir." Davos nods.

"You should get off this ship sometime, Davos. You're in Randgriz! Go see the sights, or maybe woo some girl who's got a thing for grizzled sea captains..."

Davos laughs. "I'll think about it."

The Vergeltung's shower facilities are a bit limited, and not nearly as luxurious as anything you'd find on land, but they were functional and had hot water, which was all you really needed. Twenty minutes later and you're cleaned up with a fresh uniform. Sam, being a girl, naturally takes a bit longer, but she's out ten minutes after you're done. She's still in her normal getup, in uniform with little to no makeup, but for some reason she just seems more attractive to you than ever.

"Hey, Cap, you ready? You're kinda zoning out there."

"Oh, yeah." You nod. Then you hearing a barking sound signalling that Wojtek has arrived. He was thankfully still a manageable size, but you fear that one day he'll grow too big to even fit in the Vergeltung.

"So where to now?" Sam asks, carrying Wojtek in one arm and looping her other one around yours. "I'm actually really hungry."

"BIG GUTS BIG BREAKFAST." You bellow. After that all night bender, you are absolutely STARVING. Thankfully, you know a place you can get a big, hearty Gallian breakfast, assuming it didn't bombed or anything during the civil war.

"Ooooh ooooh! Are we going to Jenner's?" Sam squeals.

"You are damn right we are." You nod.

Fortunately, it's not too far from where are, so you and Sam can just walk there with Wojtek in tow. Sam is taking every opportunity to cuddle up close to you as you walk, earning a few stares and points, but you ignore those. Finally, you reach Jenner's Diner, yours and Sam's favorite breakfast spot. Fortunately, the place is still standing and open.

"Jager!" The owner, the titular Jenner, grins from behind the counter. "I haven't seen you in forever! How have you been?"

"Oh, you know, traveling the world, kicking ass, the usual." You shrug.

"I suppose you've been trying out all those foreign breakfasts, too?"

"Yeah, but they're nothing compared to yours." You say.

"Damn fucking right. Same as before, two of the usuals?"

"Double portions, please." You add.

"Got it."

During your travels, you've had some pretty good breakfasts in Albion and Ustio, but neither of them could compare to a good old Gallian breakfast. Scrambled eggs with sausages and potato pancakes. However, you've always heard of Headcase boasting about the superiority of Emmerian breakfasts, but you've yet to see one for yourself, though he promised once he's got the time he'll show the Demons what he means.

You and Sam start wolfing down your breakfasts along with little Wojtek, who has his own plate to eat from.

"So anyways," You say between mouthfuls of food. "While we were on the Vergeltung, some mail finally caught up with us. It's actually about Matt and Artya."

"Really?" Sam's face brightens up. "Are they fine? What have they been doing?"

"Well, they can't really say what they've been up to due to security reasons, but they've definitely been kicking GRA ass all over the south." You nod. "And, heh, Matt's letter didn't say anything about it, but Artya says she and Matt are a couple now."

"Really!?" Sam nearly drops her fork, startling Wojtek for a bit. "That's so sweet!"

"It just makes me wonder how they, you know... with that mask on..."

"You do realize that she can take it off whenever she likes, right?" Sam sighs.

"Riiight...." You shrug. "Well, from the looks of it, your dad's going to have to deal with a lot of grandki- aw shit."

Sam bursts out in laughter at your show of awkwardness. "Aw man, that's not something I want to deal with for a few years, at least."

"Y-yeah." You nod, chugging your entire cup of coffee in an effort to wash the awkwardness away.

And with that, you're finally finished. You pay your bill and say your farewells to Jenner and you're off again. Wojtek, now with food in his belly, gets a sudden burst of energy and starts tugging at his leash, ready to go.

"I'm just good enough not to get caught." Tarin shrugs.

"Hey, no need to rub it in our faces." Ramirez sighs, rubbing his forehead. "I don't even remember what happened. I just hear everybody calling out my name all the time."

"And I've got the distinct feeling I drove a tank that wasn't mine." Headcase frowns. "These hands... they just don't feel right."

Um... not exactly I don't think. Besides "capture fetish" sounds like some kind of weird kinky S&M subtopic. No, I mean she's probably very competitive (not quite like Elsa) and also has issues with trusting people (which is probably common for Darcsen). It's more like she tests people because she's used to being let down. Looking to get "caught" was referring to someone giving her a challenge and proving themselves to be reliable. That's probably what's behind her playing sneaky-sneaky all the time. But this is just an opinion.

"I think I can fill in the gaps." You say. "Apparently, we all stole a tank, joyrode it around Randgriz for several hours, knocked down a statue of some asshole, tied it onto the tank, set the whole thing on fire, and drove it off a cliff."

"Oh, so that's why I smell like burnt ragnite." Heloise sighs.

"That actually sounds pretty cool." Ramirez nods. "Though I wonder why may hands hurt so goddamn much."

"Maybe you tore it down with your bare hands." Julia shrugs.

"I can actually see that happening." Headcase nods.

You want to stay and hang out with your squadmates a bit more, but a tug your sleeve and the sight of Sam tapping her watch means that time is up.

"Well then, carry on, you all. I've got a meeting to get to." You say.

The Demons say their goodbyes and you and Sam head over to Army HQ, which is just now being repopulated by the staff that were forced to abandon it. It's not hard to find General Welling's office, as it is the most busy place in the entire base. You press yourself against the wall to make way for a large herd of staffers as they shuffle past, and you enter the office to see a very tired looking General Wellings. Like Lynch's office, Wellings' office was bare and Spartan, though you attribute you that more to him just recently moving in rather than any aesthetic taste.

"General."

"Ah, Captain Sturmfuhrer. Come in." General Wellings sighs. "It looks like you've cleaned yourself up rather well in such a short amount of time."

"Thanks." You say. "Anyways, what's this 'hunting trip' you were talking about?"

"Ah yes, well..." General Wellings rolls out a map of Gallia on his desk. "You see, even though we retook Randgriz and have effectively broken the back of the GRA, their leader, Baldren Gassenarl, is still unaccounted for. Intelligence suggests that he's fled south where he still has forces loyal to him."

"So he's our hunting target?"

"That's right." Wellings nods. "I've got men combing all of southern Gallia for him, but there's one place where's likely to be holed up in."

He then points to the one place on the map you were dearly hoping he wouldn't.

"That's right, we're assaulting Castle Gassenarl." General Wellings says.

"So, in order for you to bless my relationship with Sam, you want me and my men to assault one of the most heavily fortified castles in all of Gallia? A stronghold that managed to hold its own against the Imps during the invasion?"

"That's right." Wellings nods. "With the bulk of the GRA either destroyed, scattered, or surrendering, Castle Gassenarl is at its weakest. Even if Baldren ends up not being there, we deny him his last stronghold that he can use to rebuild his forces."

"So, what's the plan, then? Surely you don't expect us to charge head long into the castle."

"It'll be a night attack. We'll be having supporting forces pushing in and drawing their fire while you and a another specialist team infiltrate the castle from the river and take out the defenses from the inside."

"And what exactly is this specialist team?" You ask.

"Classified. You'll be informed once you're deployed."

"Of course."

"We'll be moving out in two days. Make sure your men are ready by then."

"Of course, sir."

"Good. I'll release your payment for the last mission. Dismissed."

Perhaps we should get the BIG BOOM Team?

So Elsa and Alek on overwatch. Julia, Headcase, Sam and Isolde in reserve?

Send in Tarin, Brilliant, Ramirez. Have them escort Heloise who carries the demolition charges.

What do with Elizabeth?

And Jager can punch someone.
>>
>>25925548
>>25925579

Beyond that, we built the starlight scope.

We might be able to get NV goggles.

>>
>>25925768

A single eye flipdown sight will be a good aid for the team, though. Especially since I doubt they will have access to such things and have to rely on Mk. 1 Eyeballs.
>>
>>25925769
Might be risky. GRA stronghold will have tighter security. They won't be easily fooled and would catch something suspicious.

That being said... it would be fun.

What kind of kit would we send her in with?
>>
>>25925805
Until they, inevitably, break. Then you're Stevie Wonder.
>>
>>25925855

We still have those rerolls as insurance and this sort of mission is her element.

For kit, maybe a standard issue GRA uniform.

>>25925803

Yes but im not sure if they have maids in this one. Maybe she'll find another for her collection.
>>
So I'm analyzing the picture for how best we could assault it. I'm going to share a few ideas that I've had.
1- Buzzbomb into the bottom of the outcropping tower nearest to the river. Hopefully that'd create a nice little breach to get in. We dart forward from the river into the hole, work our way in from there. Mortar should lay down a smoke screen down near the tank hanger.
2-Scale the wall with infantry up to a gun port, apply a bit of explosives, and enter from there. 3- Head downstream until just before the waterfall, then move around into the woods near the hangar. Scale the hangar, drop down on the opposite side. Work way up through the treeline into the castle.
>>
Will be back in about 20 mins

A Delisle carbine for sentry removal, some C4 equivalent. Hand grenades. Suppressed handgun and combat knife. A sneaking suit with complementary bandana.

We go full kit, we probably won't see any problems.
>>
>>25925908

We're going in silent first, though. Don't think we should be deploying the buzzbomb immediately.

...Nevermind, Ramirez can handle any and all equipment. Including ARMOUR.
>>
>>25925902
Might have something with using a GRA uniform.

Also forgot we'll probably have Mac, Matt and Artya for this mission.

Be nice if we could give Elsa a Gallian Q with a starlight - remember she gets bonuses when stealthed.
>>
>>25925855

Right now, the GRA is scattered and on the retreat. I think it would be easy to infiltrate Elizabeth with a cover story of being from a routed unit that was presumed wiped out. Unless the ties between the GRA and the Federation come to light, then we can just infiltrate her as that ambassador's aide.

>>25925988

The Starlight is dependant on what time the raid will be commencing--we don't want our boys lugging around any more equipment than they already need. If it's early dawn, I don't think we'll need it. However, if we're planning this offensive for the dead of night or even as early as dusk, it'll be essential.
>>
>>25926016
I though it was a confirmed night raid.

Nah. Bring plenty of ammo, stealth to the tanks, choose the biggest and baddest for Ramirez to jack, then sabotage the rest. A full clip of Gallian-Q into the control panels should do the trick.

That or having Helly fuck with their engines.

It's simple enough to catch a train back up to northern Gallia, and from there it's a relatively short drive back to your estate.

"Back so soon?" Kincaid scoffs as he sees you and the Demons pull up. "First you disappear for two years, and then you come back and can't very well leave this place alone!"

"Yeah well, I have new obligations now." You shrug. "How's the reconstruction going?"

"I'd say about sixty to seventy percent complete." Your huntsman points to the castle. "The main builds have been rebuilt. We just need to do the walls and the towers next, which are the trickiest ones."

"That's good." You nod.

Firing might not make much noise but the bullet hitting metal will. Plus firing a gun inside a metal box is a pretty bad idea, the bullet could ricochet and end up anywhere.

>>25926348
Yeah that would be much easier than using a gun. It wouldn't be too hard to mess up the controls if you just went to town on it with a pair of bolt cutters. Painting over the gunsights is still a good backup plan because they could still use the hull MGs even if they can't move the tank.

You decide to go find Grandma first, considering she's the one in charge here, after all. You also kind of want to find out just where she's getting all the resources and materials to effect these castle repairs. However, you still appreciate the effort.

"Ah, so you really did remember to come and visit!" Grandma beams as you approach where she's set up her little table and tea set. "It's always so nice to see a grandson come visit once in a while."

"Yeah, well, I had some free time." You laugh. "Oh right, and I suppose I should tell you that me and Sam are together, now."

"You mean you weren't before?" Grandma gives you a sly, knowing grin.

"Was it really that obvious?" You sigh.

"I would've been more shocked if you restarted your relationship with that Karla Hohenzollern." Grandma says disdainfully. "Your parents truly did have the strangest tastes in girls."

"Anyways, I was just checking in on how the reconstruction was going." You say, desperate to change the subject.

"Oh, well enough, I suppose." Grandma leans back. "These Darcsens are a very resourceful bunch. I think we'll be back to our original condition in a couple of months or so. However, I have some ideas on how to expand this castle, though I'd need to have an audience with the Archduchess.

"Actually, we did kinda just save her life." You say.

"Ah, so she owes you a favor." Grandma smiles. Favors can be such valuable things."

>>25926409
I think we could set up primary objectives and secondary objectives for our team mates, like first Heloise sabotages tanks in the yard. Her secondary objective might be to rdx a main gate for when our tanks need to roll in, securing both an entrance and exit.

But we could get into some dirty dozen stuff.

I don't know. She's up to some serious conniving though. It'll be big.
>>
>>25926738

Please, you give her too little credit.

Shes not a social worker, she obviously intends to set up the place as a haven for Darscen to encourage them to flock here. Then utlise their expertise to transform the local area into a major centre of Industry, unfettered by discriminatory policies.

And Stormfuher granny will lord over all of it as a benevolent overseer, and see that all is good.
>>
>>25926807
The reason why she didn't like Karla was because she felt the Sturmfuhrers needed to rise to power on their own strength rather than marrying into royalty. Sounds like the kind of move she'd make, actually.

Will there be cookies in this slightly delusional vision of the future? Please let there be cookies!

>>25926662
Could Jagger infiltrate posing as a GRA officer with Beta? How far could this masquerade go?

But yeah, thinking of teams:

Alek and Elsa is obvious.
Was thinking Brilliant and Helloise, who could later link up with Tarin and Ramirez (and possibly Artya)
Matt and Mike would be bro-snipers.
Julia and Head case in reserve, with possibly Sam and Isolde accompanying.
>>
>>25926882

Its not that unlikely.

A single Darcsen? Easy to maginalise. A town/city of them working together to produce engineering marvels? Impossible to ignore.

In a single stroke, she gains the gratitude of the Darcsen people who have been mistreated, the loyalty of the people settled on the Stormfuhrer holdings and influence and political leverage over lords, the gallian Armed Forces and anyone who wishes to purchase the finished products.

That she'll still collect rent is the icing on the cake.

Granny is a very shrewd and scary.
>>
>>25927000
I think Jaeger's face is just too well known to infiltrate. For teams I was thinking of the following.

Alek and Elsa, Sniper couple extrordinare
Brilliant and Helloise
Ramirez and Isolde/Tarin
Sam and Jaeger
Tarin/Isolde and Artya

>>25927039
No I don't doubt it. I was just joking about "benevolent overlords" baking cookies.
