“Nightmares again?” Ice asks softly, sitting down in the other sofa as you idly flip through late night TV.- nothing on, really. Rarely is this time of night.

You look over at her sharply- and she holds up a hand, forestalling your question. “No, she didn't tell me. But you might want to tell her to hide her journal better.” She pauses.

“And yes, she knows I read it. She reads mine too, when she finds it. We've been doing that for years.”

You shake your head- in this case, no, it wasn't nightmares. Just couldn't sleep.

“Listen, Frank, I-” She stops then shakes her head. “I know we haven't always gotten along in the past, but the well-being of my squadron is my business. How long did you plan to hide this?”

1/2
>>
It's a good question, really. To you, it wasn't an issue that merited her attention- it wasn't interfering with your flying, and if it had been, you'd like to think you'd have had the sense to go see someone from the mental health guys on your own.

You'd like to think that, but then again, you're well aware they'd have had to drag you in there kicking and screaming. Or Merlin would have had to ask you. That might have worked too.

You shrug, noncommittally, finally settling on the local programming channel- they tend to play some decent music this time of night. The sounds of Sinatra's take on fly me to the moon fill the room. You turn it down enough that you're not worried about having to speak over it.

“Come on Frank. Did you think you'd be able to hide it from all of us for however long you're here?” She persists. “Someone was bound to notice, sooner or later. Samantha would have said something, or maybe Patty or Rachel when she thought it was too much for her. Or Captain Blackwell when we got back aboard.”

You chuckle, briefly, shaking your head.

“What's funny?” Ice asks.

[x] This whole mess.

You sigh, the sudden burst of laughter dying down almost as fast as it came- amusement mixes with self-pity and not a little weariness.

“This whole mess.” You say, chuckling darkly. “I mean, shit Ice. I'm twenty four, I'm nowhere near qualified for this shit.”

“Oh bullshit, Frank.” She says “You're-”

“You sound like Slider.” You cut her off. “I'm not. I'm not old enough, I don't even know what I'm supposed to be doing. Know how I got in this unit? Good grades. No shit! Top percentile in my graduating class. Know what we were told in advanced? It's our job to take care of 'our' witches. Nothing more than that.”

“And you've done a fine job of it-” Ice says, stopping herself short.

You snort. “Yeah, in combat, by more luck and a hell of a lot of improvisation than anything else. And what's the return? Don't lie to me, you think I'm losing it, don't you?”

“Well, I-”

You cut her off again. “Taking unnecessary risks. Doing shit with an aircraft that apparently aren't possible. Don't know what she said about the nightmares, but...” You shrug. “Katya's worried I'm seeking some kind of hero's death, apparently, Slider's... who the hell knows, I sure don't. And...”

You stop. Slider told you not to let her onto the fact that she thinks Ice has daddy issues.

“And what, Frank?” Ice asks.

We don't know her well enough to help her through that and it will only cause more problems, such as Slider no longer trusting us.
Slider is the best person to help Ice through her issues, not us, and we'd only compound the problem by bringing it up.
>>

Then may I just kindly say, fuck Slider for saying anything in the first place, seriously, if she wasn't looking for help on this issue, then she could have kept it to herself or maybe worked to convince Ice to tell us. No, this is just another in a long line of stupid actions that people take because they don't actually think through.
The only way we can help Ice is by not dying, not going into her own neuroses when we are hilariously incompetent at it.
There is no need to take the option which is detrimental when a better option is available.

Pretty sure at least some people are picking it for "Ice points" or something. I'm neutral on the whole romantic subject but I don't think the middle of having Frank's own issues come out is the best time.

Deliver it like this, Slider confided this in me, and if she's concerned, then I'm concerned, but she believes that you think you're cursed, and that curse is gonna come back in full swing and something terrible will happen to me.

Oh shit, I thought we heard about that around Japan, no wonder I couldn't find it.

Okay, yeah just read it, we didn't pressure it, she just says it out of the blue, and we ask for clarification, no pressuring. Christ, perspective warp much guys.

Now, I'll give this, we promised not to say anything, but just how long are we going to let this shit hang between us? I mean, when the best suggestion for helping is "don't die" when we're a pilot in the middle of a major war...we really gotta do better than that.

Slider will smack fronk about abit but if he can help Ice get her head on straighter, she'll forgive him.

“And... nothing, boss. Forget it.” You say with a sigh. “I'm fine, it's just the inaction. Too much time to think.”

She cocks her head sideways. “You're hiding something.” She states, then lest her shoulders slump. “I'm not going to dig. But I guess I do have good news for you, if inaction is your problem.”

“Orders?” You ask, suddenly excited. “Where are we going?”

She laughs. “Now I remember why we called you warhound. Nothing concrete yet, but there's another mixed unit due on base shortly, and as soon as our testing and familiarization is done, we're going to start get live weapons training time in at the range.”

“Well, at least it's something.” You say, shrugging. “Any rumors?”

She shakes her head. “Nothing credible. Iceland, some old castle in the UK, some base in France, Back in Japan, Korea, aboard the Sara, aboard the Big stick, no wait, aboard the Abe... “ She shrugs helplessly.

You have to laugh at that- same shit, it seems like.

So this thought might be a little off topic but....the last time the martians invaded was during WW2 when, presumably the human militarys were at their weakest.

So it would stand to reason that if the martians have any intention of invading again, WW3 would be the perfect time to do so.

Maybe they'll have upgraded from 'Mars Attacks' to 'Independence Day'

If the martians wanted to invade, and they have the technology to between earth and mars, then they could just shotgun a shitton of debris at the earth.

That would have the triple effects of eliminating sat coverage, clearing the orbitals of hostiles, and cluttering up earth-based radars.

After that it's just a matter of orbital bombardment to soften up ground targets prioritizing military installations capable of striking orbiting or entering craft
>>
>>25918295

>So this thought might be a little off topic but....the last time the martians invaded was during WW2 when, presumably the human militarys were at their weakest.

Uh...no. They specifically invaded the two largest concentrations of military might on the planet (the Battle of Moscow and Pearl Harbor, respectfully) in attempt to wipe them all out at once. They obviously failed miserably.

In fact, that was the biggest problem with the Martian invasion in the first place: their hubris. They thought that they could just waltz over mankind with superior weaponry. That the invasion would be routine, and they could immediately proceed to mop-up. They VASTLY overestimated their capabilities.
>>
>>25918356
Because interplanetary ships are expensive, bigass gun was cheaper.

That and it's still sorta War of the Worlds Mars.
>>
>>25917350
>[x] Well, that's no way to be. C'mon, let's go get some food.

I don't think we should taunt her
>>
>>25918356
Because they don't seem to have gravity engines capable of orbital insertion by themselves, or the ones that are powerful enough to do so are prohibitively expensive.
A giant mass driver is also far more efficient for getting things into orbit, and apparently theirs is also powerful enough to get things past orbit and into a ballistic trajectory to Earth.
>>
>>25918330
Meh, they've had time to improve their tech too.

They could launch modules into their own orbit and assemble them in space.

Or for that matter, build up a large amount of material in space to hurl at the earth and deplete their defenses.

If they've been building up the same way the humans have since WW2, they could have some crazy shit.

damn, for some reason i wanna play kerbal space program now.....
>>
>>25918356
It's expensive you know.

Rockets are big and need fuel and when launching, they need more power for that fuel to escape the gravity well which needs even more fuel etc.

We don't even know if they have the right fuel, (what the heck is on mars anyway?) but electricity is a common source by virtue of solar power or what have you.
>>
>>25918358

That and they didn't seem to understand its not midnight everywhere on earth at the same time.
>>
>>25918393

Ok, but still. I wonder how the damn jellyfish survived the Gs during the acceleration.

>>25918404

See, wouldn't it make more sense to fire the mass driver to a Lagrange point about Mars BEFORE making the journey? Instead of having to individually plot each reinforcement pod and having to wait ages before firing the next one?
>>
>>25918451
>I wonder how the damn jellyfish survived the Gs during the acceleration.
They have gravity manipulation technology. Maybe they also developed intertial dampeners using control over a Higgs Field.

>Instead of having to individually plot each reinforcement pod and having to wait ages before firing the next one?
Why would they have to wait? They could continue firing reinforcements towards Earth without waiting for the Lagrange Point to be cleared if the pods went directly toward Earth.
>>
>>25918451
>See, wouldn't it make more sense to fire the mass driver to a Lagrange point about Mars BEFORE making the journey? Instead of having to individually plot each reinforcement pod and having to wait ages before firing the next one?

“Jeez, boss. It's a shame you couldn't come out to the Colonel's with us. His daughter cooks up a hell of a mean dinner. Fried chicken and ham and mashed potatoes and gravy and...”

She interrupts your menu with a thrown sock.

You dodge it- just barely- and laugh. “Well, 'cmon. Let's go get some chow.”

She hesitates. “Well, I shouldn't leave... what if someone comes looking for me or something happens here? M-Maybe I should just stay...”

You laugh and drag her off the couch by her wrist. “Let Slider handle it. We're not gonna go that far off post anyway, something major comes up, we'll know about it.”

“I... Ok.” She nods. “But it's not a date. Rachel's a better match for you anyway.”

Ice has the sense to grab a pair of pants- BDUs, which make her look suspiciously like a Marine, in her brown Tshirt, but you don't say anything- you're either in khakis or a flight suit anyway, unless you're helping out in the hangar.

The diner you're thinking of is just outside the gate- You'd swear it was a waffle house chain place, but it's too big for that and independent anyway.

Inside it's empty but for a few truckers and one guy in a suit taking up a table by himself with his his school books. You smile, remembering many late nights of your own.

The table is relatively clean, and Ice takes a seat across from you, picking up the menu and scrolling over it before the cook comes over and pours you both a cup of coffee.

“What'll it be, folks?” He asks, pulling out an order pad.

Ice shrugs. “Go ahead and order for me, Frank. I've never eaten here before.”

“Waffles,” you state, as if issuing a proclamation. “Waffles. And Bacon. And hash browns.”

The cook, for his part, isn't impressed. “Anything else?”

You narrow your eyes. “And gravy. And biscuits. And eggs. Scrambled.”

“I'll have it up in a few.” He says, walking over to the grill and dropping on some sausage patties, while dropping some waffle batter in the irons.

Ice looks over at you. “You usually order that much?”

“Nah.” you shake your head with a laugh. “but leftovers never killed anyone, and if nobody else will, the twins will eat 'em. Assuming we don't.”

“Ugh.” Ice says, stretching briefly. “This training cycle is hell. These new strikers are rough.”

“Worse than usual for you guys?” You ask.

She nods. “Very demanding- it's no wonder Goose is having such a bad time with them. We've been doing captive missile tests with playboy, that's something we'll have to really work out, since we've got too many witches and not enough steelwings to go around.” She sighs.

“But there's not enough steelwings to go around either, right now. Not and maintain our readiness level. You know they're considering using Phantoms as our missile carriers?” She sighs again. “Phantoms! You remember how they did up in Alaska.”

[x] “Boss, take a breath. Let go of work or a bit.”

“Boss,” You say, shaking your head. “Take a breath. Let go of work for a bit.”

“It's just-”

You cut her off again. “Boss, listen. You keep on like this, you're gonna have a breakdown, and we'd all be screwed.”

“I-”

“No. no more work talk or I start making bad puns.” You say, wagging a finger at her threateningly.

She laughs. “Fine, fine. So, Rufus seems to be getting along well with everyone. Though his favorite trick seems to be sneaking up behind the twins and barking at them. Scares the crap out of them.”

You laugh at that, picturing it in your head. “He's a good dog. Loves it out at the colonel's place too- he's got more hours in biplanes than you'd think.”

“Biplanes?” Ice asks, spearing the first waffle as the cooks sets it down.

You nod, grabbing one too. “Yeah. Crop dusters, mostly. Open-cockpit stuff. The colonel's taken him a couple times while we were aboard, whenever my aunt and uncle couldn't.”

“Sounds like the Colonel is quite a guy.” Ice says. “Goose and Rosalie spoke pretty well of him.”

You smile and nod. “Next time I'm out there, you're coming along. You might even have fun.”

She looks up at you, but, with a mouthful of waffle, can't retort. You chuckle.

“Besides, Rosalie looked at him like he was Jesus and Santa Clause when he asked her to take those strikers for a spin. There's something relaxing about prop flight, I think.”

“I just wish I had the time....” Ice says, sadly. “But I've been so busy with the squadron...”

“You trying to steer us back to talking about work?” You ask, smirking.

She shakes her head. “No, just saying. I just don't have the time to get out like that, no matter how much you and Rachel think I need it.”

[x] “We'll sort something out. Cos you do need to get out.”

“We'll figure something out, Ice.” You say, already working on a plan. “You need to get out sometimes, you're going to give yourself an ulcer or something like this.”

She looks at you and opens her mouth, prepared to protest... then stops and nods. “Thanks, Frank. You and Rachel are right, probably I could use some time off. Maybe if we've got a couple days after this training cycle. I'd like to meet the colonel, or go for a road trip or something.” She sighs.

“Well, if Admiral Nixon is still around, maybe he'll help us out?” You say, questioningly. “He's been pretty good to us so far.”

She nods. “Sure, if he's not too busy. But he works too, you know.”

You laugh. “Yeah, sure. He's an officer! You know those people never work!”

She laughs at that. “Totally useless, all of them.”

“Completely.” you agree with a sage nod. “Especially those little girls.”

“Scandalous little bitches, every last one of them.” Ice says with a smile. “They're all just in it to chase after hot older men and hook up with fighter pilots.”

You can't contain your laughter anymore. “Sometimes I wish that's all it was,” you admit. “It'd be a lot more fun.”

“Oh, sure, you say that.” Ice says. “Right up till all of us end up like your Russian stalker.”
>>
The very thought of that causes you to freeze.

“Mhmm.” Ice says, nodding. “So, what? Eight girls, all just like that?”

You shudder. “you're starting to scare me a little.”

“You know, maybe I should start doing her routine the next time you start with the bad puns and movie quotes.” Ice says.

“I have suicide pills somewhere, I think.” you note. “I might have to start carrying those around.”

“Rape whistle?” Ice asks.

“Rape what?” You return. “Rape whistle?”

She nods. “I heard a story, once, that those were standard issue for Males in mixed units.”

You shake your head. “Damn thing wouldn't do any good anyway. And no. That's probably just an old witches tale.”

“Oh, hey, that reminds me. Did you get Merlin a present for her Birthday yet?” Ice asks, suddenly.

[] Oh, shit, no. I completely forgot.
[] Hey, want to run into town so I can take care of that?

A look of dawning horror spreads across your face. Ice, for her part, looks unimpressed.

“I totally forgot.” You whisper, your voice straining under the realization of how terrible a person you are and how you should go drown in a sewer now. “Want to run into town so I can take care of that?”

“At oh dark thirty? You're going to have trouble finding a place that's open.” Ice says.

“Well, what other option do I have? She's home tomorrow, and today was her birthday, it totally slipped my mind.”

Ice smirks. “Probably too busy being ace pilot. Rosalie did tell us about you handling that corsair.”

“Compliments later.” You say, in a borderline panic. “What am I going to do? I can't give her anything of mine, she'll know I didn't get her anything!”

“Hmm...” Ice says. “You know, there's a midnight release of the start of a new witch comics series. She likes comic books, right?”

You nod. “Yeah, but she's been on this anime kick. I dunno... “

Ice shrugs. “Do you have any better options?”

“I could always have someone dig the tomcat out of my chest cavity, then have that turned into jewelry or something!” you say, trying to think of something for her.

Ice makes a face. “That's kind of creepy, frank. And gross. Plus, where are you going to find a surgeon to do that right now?”

“Crap.” You state, flatly.

“Come on, it won't be so bad.” Ice says. “Besides, they usually give the real deal a discount on the comics, so there's even a reason to bring me along.”

I'd imagine Merlin would pass out from embarrassment before she ever got further than writing about them holding hands

[x] “Alright, let's go.”

“You're a lifesaver, Tabby. I could kiss you. Let's go.” You hurriedly pay the bill, missing Ice's half-mumbled reply.

Ice guides you to a comic shop near post- Comics and cards, mostly, it looks like. You'd collected Baseball cards as a kid- who hadn't- but you never really messed with this kind of store, preferring to buy packs from the Ice cream truck and the MX whenever your parents would let you.

Inside, the majority of the shoppers are girls- younger ones, only a few around Merlin's age. A lot of them stop to look at Ice as she walks through the store. You dutifully trail behind her- kind of weirded out by the general response.

Finally it dawns on you- this is a witch comics release, and there's a witch in here. Duh.

The comic's cover looks different than any comic you're familiar with- a dirty, disheveled witch, in rags vaguely resembling an IJN uniform cowering in the corner of a cell with a text bubble- presumably from someone out of the picture, saying “my god, sir, she's practically feral.”

The title across the front reads “The assault, issue #1”

“They run in little miniseries.” Ice explains, grabbing a pair of copies. “Usually three or four issues, then they'll take a month break, then start a new one. Most of them are famous witch stories, or at least stuff that would make a good tv show. Haven't seen what this one's about though. Looks interesting.”

She gets in line with you behind a pair of girls- both with familiars out.

“Showoff kids.” Ice mutters to you, leaning close to your ear. “Witches sometimes get discounts- let's play this one honest though. I kind of like this shop, used to come here a lot as a junior grade.”

You choke back a chuckle, shaking your head. At least they have the excuse of being kids- you remember seeing pilots just out of basic flight wearing their wings on their bar jackets, in an effort to help them pick up dates.

You, however, have some class, and just got a name tape made up for bomber jacket.

Ice pays for both copies, managing to not let the guy behind the counter get a real good look at her face. He seems to recognize you at the last second, but you're already out the door before he says anything.

“Ya know,” Ice says, sounding frustrated. “This fame thing might not be all it's cracked up to be. This war's over, I'm moving somewhere quiet. Like Wyoming.”

You laugh and agree, turning onto the road and heading back onto base. Major crisis averted, you think, pulling up to the house.

Now if you can just get your head back on straight, you'll be downright scary.

Give it up, Ice. You know you want it. Might as well embrace it.

And that's it for the night!

sorry about that long lag there in the middle, my internet got kinda weird on me for a bit. No idea what that was all about.

anyway, gents, hope you enjoyed and we'll be back next week! till then..

Actually, no. till then, I'm on the IRC if you need me. and no, I have not forgotten about that thing I was doing for writefags.

Not only a deathflag, but also I really would have liked to see Wyoming

Ouch ghost...ouch

Thanks for running though

Is that based on an actual mango, or is it just something spur of the moment, I'd read it.
>>
>>25924330

They all want it, but they gatta pay for it like the rest of them.
>>
>>25924377

Shes still denying it, though.
>>
>>25924374

It's... complicated. it was something I was going to write set in SWQ's era, but it fell through with my partner in crime.

planefag?

tl;dr:

FAPANGEL ABANDONED US.

and lo, did the tear-harvest continue
>>
>>25924278
Not sure if this is the kind of material we want to give Merlin. Kind of seems to imply a brutal raping took place. Could scare her.
>>
>>25924478

Nah, he's been amazingly helpful when i actually talk to him. We tend to swap WTF stories from WW2 a lot. Had a pretty good conversation about the battle off Samar a couple days ago.
>>
>>25924526

So does Planefag follow 89? What does he think of it?
>>
>>25924526
Tin can badasses
>>
>>25924526

When is he returning?
>>
>>25924547

To be honest? I try to not bother him too much about quest stuff. I don't want him to be like "damn, not that fag again" when I talk to him, haha. I think he does- he'd mentioned it before, and I'll link him when he's mentioned.

>>25924568
yeah, no shit. those dudes were... I mean, damn. that's some rambo shit. except, ya know. in a warship.
>>
>>25924616
Yea, no shit. Going toe-to-toe with the (admittedly remaining) cream of the IJN battle-line in fucking destroyers and DESTROYER ESCORTS. Didn't one of the American ships get saluted by a Japanese captain/crew as it went down because they fought like men possessed? Taffy 3 in general had nuts of goddamn titanium
>>
>>25924616
Well next time you're chatting with him and quests come up, tell him to hurry the fuck up, his fans are losing hope
>>
>>25924616
>"damn, not that fag again"

I wonder how many SWQU writers that applies to.
>>
>>25925028

planefag's trying to finish off his Wizard story first, since he started it first. The Endgame for it's about to start, so it shouldn't be too much longer. Another year, by my guess.
>>
>>25926055
>Another year, by my guess.
fuck, I hope this doesn't go down Maid Quest style, the ending wasn't all that bad, but having the wait be so long and the author coming back bitter was a let down.
