You glance outside the shuttle's viewing port and gaze at the Night-Prowler city below. It seems somehow different since your last visit, however brief it was.

Steel-Arrow points to a large and imposing structure below. "That's the palace." You notice significant combat damage along the outer facade, and what was once the tribal gallery is now a smoldering ruin.

"Looks like it's been through a siege," you remark.

The shuttle lands a few moments later, and a pair of Night-Prowler guards stand watch over the landing pad as the passengers disembark. You take your place in the queue, waiting in turn to be cleared by Night-Prowler security. After a long while, your turn comes.

You answer the warrior's questions shortly and succinctly. You tell him you're here for the tournament, and have already registered as an entrant. The warrior looks you over. "You will stay in the guest barracks, across from the arena. Stick to your business and do not wander the city. You will be watched." You are ushered forward, into the city.

Steel-Arrow and Ashen-Blade finish their clearance, and follow you. "Where to now?" they ask.

Do you:

A. Take a walk around the city, and see the sites.
B. Head over to the arena.
C. Survey the central city and study the major residences.
D. Head over to the market.
>>

Scout out the battlefield with Sharp-Strike first, but have Steel-Arrow and Ashen-Blade split and >C. Survey the central city and study the major residences.

Let's make sure we aren't tracked so that our covert ops are actually covert.

B, if they are indeed watching us we should wait for a chance to sneak out, not blatantly disregard their instructions 10 seconds after we leave the shuttle.

You decide to head over to the arena. As the four of you walk through the streets, you notice a significant increase in security presence. You see several Night-Prowler warriors standing guard over each of the corners.

Steel-Arrow nudges his head to the side. You turn your head and notice several small orbs attached to walls and ledges. "Cameras," he whispers.

The arena looms before you. It's shaped like a large, semi-circular dome, and you see a small crowd lined up in the plaza outside. You see many pairs of mentors and students loitering around you.

Do you:

A. Proceed to the Arena office ahead and sign in.
B. Socialize and mingle with the other entrants.
C. Head over to the barracks, where you'll be assigned a room.

Night-Prowlers might try to mire us in bureaucratic crap because of our affiliation with their clan, if we sign in way later.

At least we'll know ahead of time if they're gonna give us grief, or not.

>>B. Socialize and mingle with the other entrants.

You walk through the crowd and make small talk with a few of the mentors, when you're greeted warmly by a warrior from clan Silver-Spear.

"Three-Claw, is it? Good to meet you. I am Wind-Falcon. You may not remember me, but I took part in the study of that Fey'lenn Queen you brought back. That was a marvelous specimen."

You return his greeting.

He points to a much younger warrior next to him. "This is Iron-Staff, my protoge. I'm hoping some competition will do his training good." You greet Iron-Staff and introduce them to Sharp-Strike.

Wind-Falcon gestures cordially and glances around. "Well met! But I must say, the Night-Prowlers aren't exactly very festive. Three years ago, when we held the event in my city, things were much livelier. We're just warming up here, but what do you say to a friendly spar? Iron-Staff against Sharp-Strike. A bit of a friendly bout?"

You turn to Sharp-Strike. "How about it?"

"Yes, but ah, only if you think we have time," he replies.

Do you:

A. Agree, since it will be good practice.
B. Politely refuse, saying you've got other pressing business.
>>

Refusing would arouse suspicion. We're not supposed to 'look' like we have pressing matters.

A
>>
>>25885040
Would the spar be in the middle of the square or in a private dojo? If the other competitors will be able to watch and study Sharp-Strike's style I'll go with B, otherwise A.
>>
>>25885040
Make damn sure it's not against the rules to fight outside of competition. We don't want to get Sharp-Strike disqualified.
>>
>>25885104
This would be worth looking into.
>>
>>25885077
>>A. Agree.

"Why not," you tell him. "It'll be good practice."

"Good. This way."

You follow him across the plaza to a large training yard. You see several pairs of young hunters engaged in sparring within. You pick out an unused sparring mat, and gesture Sharp-Strike to step in.

The two fighters gesture to each other in respect, and begin to spar. At first, Iron-Staff has the clear upper hand, throwing out lightning-fast jabs and precise punches. But Sharp-Strike fends them off with his solid form, and soon, Iron-Staff begins to fall further and further behind in tempo.

"Remember our training, Iron-Staff. To break his defense, you need to focus your strikes and disrupt his stance. Go for his legs. Break his form," WInd-Falcon advises.

Iron-Staff begins to shift his fighting style. Instead of quick, relentless jabs, he begins to mix in pushes and tackles, as well as low-angle kicks. He connects once, and Sharp-Strike's balance begins to falter, allowing Iron-Staff to follow up quickly with two successive jabs. Iron-Staff is once again ahead.

Do you:

A. Remain silent and observe.
B. Advise Sharp-Strike, "You need to step up on the counter attacks. Less defense. More offense."
C. Advise Sharp-Strike, "Watch your balance, and step up your defense. Focus on deflecting and defending. Try to tire him out."
>>
>>25885475

>>
>>25885475
>C. Advise Sharp-Strike, "Watch your balance, and step up your defense. Focus on deflecting and defending. Try to tire him out."
Pure offense against an opponent with skill and cunning is a sure way to lose. He has to be smarter than his enemy, as well as more skilled.
>>
A. Remain silent and observe.

All warriors must find their own path eventually. Let him gravitate towards his strengths naturally. You won't always be around to teach him. He needs practice learning by himself.
>>
>>25885535
I wish you'd all pick A. It's so very dark and brooding.
>>
>>25885475
B. Advise Sharp-Strike, "You need to step up on the counter attacks. Less defense. More offense."
>>
>>25885475
B
>>
>>25885535
Since my vote pretty much counts for nothing, if no one picks A, my vote goes to B.
>>
>>25885571
Have you seen sharp-strike when he goes all out and fights on the offensive - he IMPALED a synthetic and charged a few more screaming like a goddamn monster.
>>
>>B.

You advise Sharp-Strike, "You need to step up on the counter attacks. Less defense. More offense."

Sharp-Strike listens, and begins to unleash a flurry of counter attacks. A few moments later, he breaks Iron-Staff's tackle attempt with his left hand and immediately inverts his right fist and propels it forward. The blow solidly connects with Iron-Staff's chest , knocking him back and causing him to stagger. But to Iron-Staff's credit, he quickly regains his balance and resumes the attack once more.

"He is stronger than you, which means you must be faster. More feints. Faster footwork. Make him guess." Wind-Falcon advises.

Iron-Staff heeds the advice, and begins to step up his movement, nimbly retreating and advancing, and dashing from side to side, striking blows from the flanks.

Sharp-Strike's attacks begin to falter against his opponent's nimbleness, and slowly, he begins to fall back on the defensive.

Do you:

A. Remain silent and observe.
B. Advise, "Don't try to figure out which attack is real and which one is a feint; you need to be even more aggressive. Force him to defend."
C. "Rush and advance. Force him to back up. Lock him down. Don't give him room to maneuver!"
D. Advise, "Stay defense. He can't keep this up forever. Don't give him any openings. Wait for him to tire."
>>

A. Remain silent and observe.

I'll say observe, the true mark of a warrior is being able to adapt on their own. We know he's ready for this, otherwise we wouldn't have entered him in the tourney. (Well, we probably would've, but whatever.)

He's capable enough, let's not distract him by telling him how to fight. No need to coddle him.

I agree.

A.

We can still give him words of encouragement.

"Follow your instincts. etc"
>>
>>A.

You remain silent, and continue to observe. At first, it seems like Sharp-Strike is overwhelmed by his opponent's speed. As the fight goes on, however, he begins to grow more confident; his deflections become more fluid, and his counter-attacks increase in accuracy. Suddenly, Iron-Staff rushes forward and launches a palm strike at Sharp-Strike's chest.

Sharp-Strike turns quickly to the side, dodges the blow, and counter-attacks with a flashing elbow, which connects solidly with his opponent's shoulder. Iron-Staff twists from the blow, and Sharp-Strike follows up with a rushing tackle, bringing his opponent to the ground.

The two fighters stand. Iron-Staff approaches Sharp-Strike and congratulates him on the win.

Wind-Falcon thanks you kindly for the practice, and begins to lecture his student.

Do you:

A. Head back to the arena office to report in.
B. Head over to the barracks.
C. Take some time to loiter the practice ground and gauge the competition.

>>A. Head back to the arena office to report in.

You step out from the training grounds and return to the arena plaza. You head over to the arena office, and report you and Sharp-Strike to the tournament ledger. The tournament official looks the two of you over.

"No betting. No fight fixing. No weapons. Don't wander the city. You will be watched. Now, report to the barracks and stay in your room. The first match will commence this afternoon." He hands you and Sharp-Strike a small metallic token. "Wear these on your chest harness. They're trackers. Lets us know where you are. Don't go around the city without them."

You take the tokens and head towards the barracks. Upon arrival, you're shown into a small chamber at the end of a long hallway. Within are two simple beds. It looks like this will be where you'll be staying.

You take one of the tokens and examines it up close. It resembles a small oval with the Night-Prowler logo imprinted on top.

You take the small knife you received as a souvenir from your father and slowly begin to pick at it long the seams.

You lodge the tip of the blade underneath the front plate and gently twist. The token cracks, and parts in two. You slowly lift the cover and examine the inside.

You see and identify a small transceiver buried within. As you attempt to probe and extract it, you inadvertently scrape the blade against one of the thin wires, slicing it in two.

Suddenly, an audible alarm buzzes outside and you hear footsteps coming towards you.

A. Attempt to put the token back together and pretend nothing happened. (Pass, vs. DC 12)

You quickly stow your knife and gently piece the token back together. Just as you fit the front plate back on, the door bursts open and two Night-Prowler warriors burst in. Targeting beams light up from their shoulders, tracking you.

"DON'T MOVE!"

A third warrior rushes forward and snatches the token from your hand. He scans it with a device attached to his wrist computer. "No longer active" he tells his companions.

He turns to you, and shines his targeting beam at your head.

Good thing we didn't take Burning-Scythe. I doubt his skills with explosives would prove very useful on this mission.

We'll probably have to trust much of the work to Steel-Arrow and Ashen-Blade now.
>>
>> C.

You stare directly at the warrior. "Why are you tracking your guests in the first place?"

The warrior clicks angrily.

"Night-Prowler policy. If we're going to have strangers roaming our city, we should know exactly where they are."

He turns to Steel-Arrow and Ashen-Blade. "AND you two!" Where are your tokens?"

Ashen-Blade taps on his wrist-computer and brings up a holo screen. "Statement of work for one of your technicians. I'm here on business."

The warrior squints his eye and examines the document, and says nothing. He stows the deactivated token into his belt and takes out another one. He hands you the replacement.

"Here's a new one. Don't lose it, don't try anything funny, or I'll vaporize your head."

With that, he motions his companions, and the three of them leaves your room.

Ashen-Blade waits until they're out of earshot, and says,

"I bet we can find someone at the market who knows how to work these trackers," he tells you.

You look at your wrist computer. You still have several hours until Sharp-Strike's first match.

You turn to Ashen-Blade and Steel-Arrow. "Why don't you two head over to the market. See if you can find out about these trackers. Sharp-Strike and I will head to the arena."

Ashen-Blade and Steel-Arrow agrees, and the four of you splits up into two pairs.

You and Sharp-Strike make your way to the arena. You hear the thrumming of engines above the plaza. You look up to see a finely decorated shuttle land at the far end. The door opens, and a Night-Prowler elder dressed in full ceremonial armor steps out.

You recognize him as Death-Gifter, the former lead warrior of Night-Prowler internal security, and member of the current ruling council.

The crowd parts as he moves through them. One of the arena guard greets him respectfully, and shows him in.

I can denote when rolls are non-combat rolls, and institute a rule which discounts 1's if one happens after a passing roll.

So if the DC is 10, and we roll 9, 12, 1, then I'll count it as pass. But if we roll 9, 9, 1, or 1,12,15, then we still crit fail.

Same goes for crit successes.

Deciding you're harmless, the guard turns away to watch the plaza. You quickly reach into your belt and palm a transmitter. As you walk by the exhaust section, you wave your hand and quickly insert the transmitter under one of the control flaps.

You check the guard, note he's still not looking your way, and you casually back away from the shuttle.

You spend some more time loitering in the plaza while furtively tuning your wrist-computer to the transmitter. A few moments later, you hear the blaring of a ceremonial horn.

The opening ceremonies for the tournament are about to start. The plaza begins to empty as everyone gravitates toward the entrance. You notice several guards following the crowd in as well.

Do you:

A. Follow the crowd into the arena.
B. Have Sharp-Strike enter the arena while you stay behind.
C. Have both of you stay behind.

There's nothing else we can do here. Better to enter and blend into the crowd.

>> A. Follow the crowd into the arena.

You blend in with the crowd, and move forwards into the arena.

The arena guards take their posts, and the crowed is ushered to the ringside seats, surrounding the large combat pit below.

You and Sharp-Strike are escorted to the bottom rung with the other contestants. Wind-Falcon spots you, and beckons you over. The two of you sits down beside Wind-Falcon and Iron-Staff.

As the crowd settles, several Night-Prowler warriors enter the combat pits from the side. They stand respectfully to the side as an elder warrior in shining ceremonial armor emerges from the side door.

It is Death-Gifter. The opening ceremonies have begun.

As many of you noticed, I've been quite sporadic in holding quests these few days. Apologies for that.

The reason is I'm currently shuttling back and forth between Hong Kong and Singapore for work purposes. I'll be flying back and settling back down in August 7th, so until then, I'm afraid the session frequency will be fewer in number.

As always, watch my twitter. I'll usually update daily, unless I'm stuck on a plane.

>unless I'm stuck on a plane.

I can just imagine the conversation
>"Excuse me sir, but no electronics allowed on the plane"
>"Fuck you bitch, I've got a quest to run!"
