You are Ssen, a Lamia raised by a human Paladin who adopted you after killing the ones who birthed you. You are grown now, and Father has passed on. After a great deal of work, you have become a Paladin like your Father, and now take up his duties.

You are accompanied by your best friend from childhood, the insect druid Tricia; Mage, a magic user who ran away from his family of cannibal raiders known as the Ghouls (Yes, his name is Mage. It was his idea); Persephone, a 22-year old thief/ex-guerllia fighter (She goes by Peri), and Mari, a 13-year old prodigy scholar/now sniper, who has her mind and soul trapped within Peri's body; and Lea, a deeply religious musician/martial artist, trained by her father, a famous trainer for arena fighters, she's covered from her mouth down in bandages to hide the horrific state her body has become thanks to the 'cures' that saved her from cancer.

Your journey continues...

Your journey North to contact the Orc Tribes and hopefully convince them to fight the Phoenix Empire with the United Free Kingdoms has stared off in a fairly typical way for the Dawnchasers.

Craziness, Danger, Mass Property Damage, and Contact With Horribleness That Dwarfs Imagination.

You slowly made your way through the Northern Woods, where apparently some short-sighted Druids had turned the place into a deathtrap. You found their dwelling, and discovered that it had been dominated by a strange type of Ice. The Ice had also apparently changed the Druids into something else.

You also discovered in the basement, an Orc who was in the middle of a battle with one of the former druids. You helped him dispatch the once-human thing. The orc showed little gratitude, but was willing to show you the way to his tribe.

His name is Tisgut and he is a scout for the Red Wolf tribe. A tribe that dedicates themselves to crushing the threat the Ice poses to the other Orc Tribes. A tribe that the other Orcs turn to for rituals and judgement. A tribe that lives out past the Tundra, upon the Ice.

Also, I saw this mentioned upon the Quest General boards. Someone wants to do a synopsis of the quest. By all means, go ahead, and you can reach me at the email that's included in this post for any feedback you'd like.

Woo, lamia quest! Great way to spend a muggy sunday afternoon.

Oh, yeah, I was thinking about doing a summary. I guess I'll work on that.

Aww yeah Lamia quest, this sunday is awesome as hell.

I think I'm going to get snacks in this writing-lull. Also, what do you think of using piles of clocks to weaken citadel's influence long enough to break through their wall with high explosives?
>>
>>25875732
I think clocks only really work with people. Citadel seems to work by disconnecting people from reality, clocks are pure mechanic and can't really be corrupted it seems. That or it's the rhythm of ticking or something equally babblish.

Also I got a burger so I'm good on snacks

Lightmare makes his way through the increasingly frigid woods. Tisgut says nothing, save for occasionally gesturing for Lea to adjust your path.

After a bit he holds up his hand. "Late. Make camp."

"It's not that late." Mage says looking at the sky. It's early evening, 4:30pm 5 tops. You've still got at least two more hours of solid sunlight.

"Reach plains during night. Crossing plains by night death. Wind, animals, and the *Orc Word* that we miss." He has pointed to his steel charm when he said that word.

There's little argument from the others as Lea pulls Lightmare to a stop and you begin to make camp.

You make a fire, and Mage puts together a simple travel stew. (He adds the meat base after he's taken out a portion for himself.

You empty the pot and fill all your bowls. Including one for your guest, and all sit down and start to eat. Tisgut bolts his food down quickly. Not a surprise, seeing as how long he was likely trapped in the Druid's cellar.

Then he looks up and looks around at everyone. Then he gets up and walks over to Tricia and grabs her bowl.

"Hey!" She says.

Tisgut says nothing but goes back to his seat and continues to eat. He has a rather calm look on his face, like he's just asked Tricia to pass the salt.

Tricia looks at you, fuming with anger.
>>
>>25875859
Snatch it from him and start eating it.
>>
>>25875732
That'd probably need a fuckton of clocks. More clocks than there are in the country. That's like trying to overload the Yangtze river with piss and doing it one bottle at a time or breaking into Fort Knox with a nail file.

"You're gonna have to do something about it yourself. Individuality remember?" You say quietly. "Remember your strengths aren't his. Don't use his but yours. I don't paticularily care if he suffers from bugbites."

Tricia frowns and gets up. "You're sleeping alone until you make this up to me." He mutters. "HEY! PIGFACE!" She shouts and stomps over to Tisgut.

She whips out her hand, this time she's changed it into a large pincer and has it around Tisgut's throat.

She pulls the bowl of stew back out from the orc's hand. She withdraws her claw and gives him a warning snap. Then goes back to her new seat, which is not next to you and eats.

Tisgut looks up. Peri has drawn a blade, Mage has his staff glow and Lea just glares.

Tisgut shrugs and gets up and heads off into the woods.

"Uh...dId I go too far?" Tricia asks.

"Though it would have been humorous if you ate it out from under him. Maybe I should tail him, to make sure he doesn't get into any trouble?"

"When my swarm eats, my own stomach is still empty." Tricia says. "It just means they can lay more eggs and I have more to work with. I still get hungry."

Mage snickers a little at the 'tail' comment, but says nothing. He looks at Mari/Peri.

"Too easy." They say.

Tisgut returns after about ten minutes. He has a squirming rabbit in his hand. He grabs the mostly empty stew pot, pours a little clean water in it, and then snaps the rabbit's neck and tosses it into the pot.

Lea frowns. "Fur and all?"

"Best part." Tisgut says. He waits a little bit and then reaches into the boiling water and takes out the rabbit, plops it into his bowl and goes back to his seat where he eats the entire thing, using his knife and fork.

"I will never comment on your eating habits again, Ssen." Peri says.

You flick your tongue out at Peri. "Tisgut, I'm confused. How does food work for your tribe? If a hunter brings back too much for him to eat on his own, what happens to the rest?"

Tisgut shrugs. "Hunters told how much to bring back, always enough for all orc to eat. Orc still hungry, orc get more, take from others, or get own." He shrugs. "Maybe get smashed face, maybe get lost and starve, maybe get more food." He shrugs. "Hunter did job."

"What happens if a hunter kills...I dunno...a moose that he can't carry back by himself?" Peri asks.

"Hunter carves what can, returns with what he can, then goes back. Sometimes wolves there. Then orcs eat wolf...or wolf eat orc." He nods. "Moose hard to kill. Usually don't kill moose for food. Skins, maybe...but moose hard to kill."

"Huh." Mage says. "So...what...you're going to just keep taking food from us if your hungry? Even if we feed you?"

Tisgut shakes head. "No. You strong. Tisgut not fight for food, hunt more, easier." He crunches the rabbit's skull between his teeth. "Most orc prefer simple way, fighting hard, sometimes lose food in fight, so orc go get more, or wait for next meal."
>>
>>25876665
"What if the game is scarce, not enough for everyone to hunt down food by themselves?"
>>

then they starve.

>>25876665
>moose hard to kill
Are these special moose, I wonder? I mean, we've crushed a moose or two in our time, I remember.

"Makes some sense, I suppose. Shame about those who get lost, as you say. I think we'll have to fill the pot a bit more next time, it'd be a shame if our guide was the one to wind up disappearing."
>>
>>25876665
I see
>>
"What if the game is scarce, not enough for everyone to hunt down food by themselves?" You ask.

"Then orcs starve. Some leave to go die or find food. Some kill other orcs for food. Some orcs raid other tribe. Then tribe war." He shrugs. "Red Wolf get food tribute. NEVER ask for more than need. Not. Thief." He says. "Much game on ice." He says. "Red Wolf bravest, take it, Red Wolf always have food. Often trade with Boar for *Orc word.* Use for barrier."

"I thought Orcs didn't trade?" Tricia asks. "They just took."

Tisgut shrugs. "Fool to fight. Boar has *orc word,* no need. Red Wolf has much food, much need for *orc word.* Trade is useful, simple. Fool orc fight and fight and fight. Good orc not fight when can do other way. Fight for need, or for Rights...or fun." He nods. "But that different fight."
>>
>>25876856
"What does *orc word* mean?"

What would you trade for langauges? I wish to learn yours.

"What would you trade for langauges? I wish to learn yours." You say.

He shrugs and picks the fur out of his teeth. It looks like he enjoys this activity as much as eating. "Not teacher. Learn yourself. Not stopping."

You roll your eyes. "Fine. What does *orc word* mean?"

He hands you one of his belongings that he took from the Druid when he was leaving. It's a small water skin.

"Do NOT put near fire! Look ONE drop. Precious!" He snaps.

You carefully let one drop of the liquid within it to drop onto your palm. It's a thick black substance that smells to high heaven.

"Looks like tar." Tricia says.

Oil. Black gold.

Ask what they use it for.

>>25876856

"So... what's it do?" You ask, tying not to taste it.

You toss it in.

"WHOA!" Mage says as the cloth lights up in an instant and puts off a plume of foul smoke.

Tisgut nods. "Tool for ice. Use in barrier. Long line, always burning, need fuel, that best, also wood, dung, corpse, whatever can get." He shrugs.

"Wait...to protect your tribe and the other Orcs from what's out on the Ice...Red Wolf maintains a giant wall of fire?" Peri asks.

Tisgut nods. "Is one tool. Not ALWAYS lit. Just during Ice Raid."

"A. Giant. Wall. Of. Fire." Tricia says.

Tisgut nods. "Yes. What? Simple thing. Long hole, fill with stuff, light on fire...not hard."

"You made a giant wall of fire." Mage says.

"Not THAT big." Tisgut says.

"But it's still a giant wall of fire." Peri says.

"Yes. Why ask again and again?"

Lea looks at you and mouths 'Giant Wall of Fire?!'

Tisgut smiles and nods. "Snake woman understands." He finishes his rabbit, tosses the bowl in the pile with the others and heads off.

"Hey!" Peri says. "We're not going to have any issues with you tonight, got it?"

"I have no comment, but if you're ever unsure how to take something, it's a compliment. I learned that from a very unwise man.

"Anyhoo, I think this lamia is going to take first watch tonight. I'll be cold anyway, if Tricia makes good on her sinister plans." You say.

Your watch is long and slow. The fire isn't warm enough, your modified armor isn't overly warm, and the warmth charms aren't great. All together they kinda work, but you still feel sluggish and miserable.

Also, these woods are very much alive with things. You hear animals and nature sounds, so your hand keeps drifting towards Beacon, for false alarms.

You're also a little concerned about how you found Soma here. You know you brought the Grand Seal Mirrors, but you thought you were quite certain about leaving Soma at the Lighthouse. Then is showed up in Wagon, and no one else acted like it was odd. Did one of the others bring it?

Either way, your watch continues.

That last snap wasn't a wolf.

You look and you see Tisgut walking towards you. "Sword. Now." He says quietly. "More fire."

You rouse the others and give Tisgut one of Peri's spare, non-magical blades. (She's using the pair of Empire Silence Blades she took from Cai and the Crystal Witch.)

You're all up and armed long before you see anything. Also, Tisgut has built up the fire with some logs, and a few drops of that black stuff. The smoke and smell are pretty bad for a minute, but the fire leaps to life quite quickly.

When the thing smashes into the camp, you're ready for it...but at the same time, you're not ready at all.

You were expecting something humanoid, or even reptilian like yourself would have been nice. This thing...is...not.

It's legs are more like long thin points, like tiny icicles, bent and kinked one way or another, you see a few snap off, and new ones jut out and pierce the ground. It's torso is a cylinder of black, frostbitten flesh, from it rip tendrils and legs of the clear Ice. You see little bulbous spheres emerge and sink within the black flesh, a green-yellow glow within them. You realize that those are its eyes.

At the top of the cylinder are heads, two orc, one human, one deer, worn like a demonic necklace, only you can see that the backs of their skulls are fused to the frostbitten flesh. Their eyes are frozen open and their lower jaws are missing, however, their red tongues are not as they hang freely.

Above them all is...you have no idea WHAT kind of species THAT thing is, but it has three empty eye sockets, sideways mandibles, and a long tongue. The tongue is a black thing, long and covered in long little dendrites, it goes along, licks the heads it collects.

"WHAT. IS. THAT?!" Tricia screams as she staggers backwards.

"Dead." Tisgut says.

There's a ripping sound and slowly, two long, arms, made of ice containing that green-yelowish fluid, rip out from the sides of the flesh mass.

You get a free attack.

Beacon, however pierces into the mass of flesh. You see steam rising from the would, and black blood pours out of the hole for an instant, before it freezes solid, making it look like a spike's growing out of the thing.

Tricia summons a swarm of wasps from her sleeves. They don't do anything but hang around her. She's got her eyes close and is chanting.

Mage has a hand on her shoulder and is chanting as well. Apparently they're doing something.

Mari is pouring lamp oil over her bolts.

Lea sticks her bandaged hands into the fire and then leaps at the creature with a quick double jab. (Lea will take 1 wound every two rounds, unless a crit fail. This will last for four rounds, then she'll have to get fresh wraps and ignite them again.)

Tisgut pours his black stuff over his sword, and charges at the Ice Thing, running THROUGH the fire, igniting his blade and he swings at the thing.

Your piercing attack rips into the Ice Thing's deadflesh, you rip it out and expose a large chunk of what's inside, and you really wish you hadn't. There's Ice underneath the deadflesh and inside the ice are three or four of those three-eyed heads. These have more flesh on them and their eyes are not rotted away.

They shriek, their mandibles and lower jaws all opening at once.

- - LET THERE BE I! LET THERE BE US! LET THERE BE ME! WE ARE THAT IS! WE ARE ALL! - -

>>
>>25879697
I'm just trying to figure out how to do trade without making it seem like some kind of charity.

Also, what we could trade them in exchange for military support. Or how to convince them that it's a rights struggle against the phoenix empire, which it kind of is. Though, to be fair, I don't know much about the phoenix. It's almost all second hand reports from a lady who lived there and some of its' spies.
>>

>>25879788

I doubt the Orcs would be much interested in Solidarity. A better appeal would be to their self-interest. Our kingdoms are not interested in expansion right now, and we could make a contract not to expand into Orc territory in the future.

On the other hand, the Pheonix Empire is demonstrably expansionary, and will probably try to conquer the Orcs eventually. It strikes me as a univeralistic empire that feels the need to bring the wonders of taxation to everyone.

So play it as proactive defense against an encroaching state and it could work.
>>
>>25879852
yeah, that's true. They WILL probably expand into orclands, and orcs probably hate even the idea of taxes.

We, on the other hand, will simply offer trade and immigration. Which some would say is more insidious.
>>
>>25879852
Well we have the mirrors. If we sealed away the Ice spirit the Ork tribes would prolly follow us out of gratitude.

Also calling it now Soma is possessed by Peace.
>>
>>25879852
We can also give them some sort of trade agreements with both our kingdom and with the Elves. They would likely be down for the agricultural goods we can provide in exchange for stuff like hides, exotic meats and magic babble stuff. Maybe easier immigration rights.
>>
>>25879910
we'd have to couch it in terms of trade. We help you get rid of the nasty Ice spirit and you help us deal with the army of Pheonix.

>>25879938
>soma possessed by peace

Thought for the day:

To be GOVERNED is to be kept in sight, inspected, spied upon, directed, legislated at, numbered, enrolled, indoctrinated, preached at, controlled, estimated, valued, censured, commanded, by creatures who have neither the right, nor the wisdom, nor the virtue to do so.... To be GOVERNED is to be at every operation, at every transaction, noted, registered, enrolled, taxed, stamped, measured, numbered, assessed, licensed, authorized, admonished, forbidden, reformed, corrected, punished. It is, under the pretext of public utility, and in the name of the general interest, to be placed under contribution, trained, ransomed, exploited, monopolized, extorted, squeezed, mystified, robbed; then, at the slightest resistance, the first word of complaint, to be repressed, fined, despised, harassed, tracked, abused, clubbed, disarmed, choked, imprisoned, judged, condemned, shot, deported, sacrificed, sold, betrayed; and, to crown all, mocked, ridiculed, outraged, dishonored. That is government; that is its justice; that is its morality

Mage's blast hits and the Ice Thing staggers back some more, more smoke coming from it.

Lea's last flaming strike is all that's needed and the thing topples into the fire.

There's a hissing and a cracking noise as the creature writhes in the flames. You see the deadflesh and the orc and human trophy skulls burst into flame and wither or just fall off. The top head's tongue whips around wildly.

The fire is extinguished, but the Ice Thing pulls itself back up, growing more spindly legs and using its arms. That ichor is oozing off of it, and the inner skulls are now slightly exposed, their faces now open to the night air.

"SING EXULTATIONS AT OUR SIDE! FOR OURS IS THE WILL OF PERFECTION! WE CAST OURSELVES AS GREATER! OURS WAS PERFECTION SO PERFECTION WE OBTAINED! WE ARE OUR OWN GOD! WE ARE GOD! WE ARE GREATER! WE ARE ALL!" The heads shriek and yell. It's all a mass of sound really, but you're able to pick those phrases out.

You pierce both remaining faces, one after another. They stop shrieking, and the ice legs collapse and the ichor mass turns into a liquid and splashes all over the ground. The last two heads burst into flame and then ash. Beacon's glow slowly fades away, and Tisgut sniffs the air. Then extinguishes his blade.

"Gone." He says. "Deadflesh armor...new trick." He shakes his head. "Bad sign." He nods. "Tiny one. Slip past. Hard to find. Fought well, all of you. Know Orcs that run. No shame. Stay, fight, good...foolish...but good." He yawns. "Make new fire, leave in morning. Sleep." He starts walks off as if this was nothing.

Everyone just looks at you.

"Okay, I am now all for that plan where we DON'T go out to the Ice." Mage says. "I mean, really really for it."

"Stupid, stupid, stupid..." Tricia mutters as she grabs some salt pork and shoves it down her robes. "Set them on fire! Great idea...ugh, next time just stick with the hybrid...fuck that stung."

"Have to keep a watch on the shoulder." Lea mutters as she re-wraps her hands in wet bandages. "It's all about rapid fire power-strikes."

"Don't worry about it Mari. I've had fights were I couldn't hit the broad side of a barn. Though knowing how it moves would help." You say.

"Thanks..." She looks thoughtful. "Although I swear I've seen that three-eyed head thing before...probably in a book. We get back to the UFK, I'll look it up."

You nod and then go to coil around Tricia and hug her. She returns it. "Are you alright?"

"Yeah." She says.

"Hey Tricia, that was a monster, right?" You ask. "A monster made of corpses."

She blinks and then squirms out. "That was ARMOR made of dead flesh! The monster itself was made out of ice and living heads! Doesn't count, and even if it WAS it doesn't change what THAT thing was."

"I'm going to be hearing this argument for the rest of my life." Mage whimpers.

Tricia huffs and then hugs you again. "You're the only Big Monster around here...and...and...and you're a jerk." She says.

"Alright, sorry." You say.

You and Tricia head back to your tent.

The next day, you all have breakfast, pack up camp, put out the fire, and hitch up Lightmare. (Tisgut doesn't go off to get his own food or tries to take anyone else's.)

"Tisgut, how big do those things get?" Mari asks.

"Big." Tisgut says. He points at a tree as you pass it. It has to be at least 30 feet high.

"That big?" Mage asks.

Tisgut nods.

"I assume that big around, right?" Mage asks.

Tisgut nods again. "Old ones say there was bigger one, once." He shrugs. "Know that Old Place has even bigger. Can't move. Screams, sings, breeds."

"Oh this keep getting better and better." Peri mumbles.

ghoul king ended up looking like a beefy tall guy with very few visible mutations because of citadel garbage.

"Yeah, no kidding. Now all we have to do is go kill the biggest one. I vote we get a catapult...or flaming ballista...or just more of that *Or Word.*"

"*Ork word*" Tisgut says. "Harder K on end."

"Well, at least it can't move, right? That's a good thing, Peri. Also, it's not raining!" You say.

A snowflake falls upon your nose.

"Not. A. Word. More." Peri says.

You clear the treeline and enter the plains of the Northern Tundra. A harshly beautiful, flat land with scrub, a little snow, and miles upon miles of absolutely nothing.

"That way." Tisgut says. "Must ride to Ice or to Tribe. Alone on Tundra is death."

You ride further north. Miles pass and still you see nothing. One patch of this land looks almost exactly like the next. Occasionally you see animals, a lone scavenger or a herd of deer, but mostly it's absolutely nothing.

"Hold." Tisgut says.

Lea brings Lightmare to a stop.

He points one way. "Ice, Red Wolf, make it before too dark."

He points in another direction, you can clearly see a little flickering light in the distance. That's a fire, or something. Either way, it means other people.

"Other tribe. Can stay. May need Tisgut." He shrugs. "Will need to show strength. Orcs can be stupid."

well, we won't have a problem ourselves. We've been able to crack trees since like day 1. Lea can just set herself on fire to impress everyone, Tricia can do anything with her bugs and be absolutely terrifying, and mage is the one who set lea on fire. I'm more worried about peri/meri.

You point towards the fire, Lea nods and turns Lightmare to head that way. "We have plenty of strength. Shouldn't be a problem." You say. After a pause, "How does one usually show strength?"

Tisgut shrugs. "Usually violence. Strong will. But violence best and quickest."

Wagon approaches the fire and as you get closer you see a large collection of tents, some penned herd animals, and a bunch of fires set up.

Tisgut points at the tops of the tents. There's a circle of small rat skulls around each of them.

"Rat tribe." He says. "Medium sized tribe."

"Do they have a special talent?" Lea asks.

"No. Why should they? Special 'talent' tribes are dead tribes. Tribes that can do anything and everything are living tribes." Tisgut says. "Rat totem of survival, scavenger, finder. Not good tribe, not bad tribe, just tribe."

Three large orcs come forward. They have large axes with them, and you can see people with bows in the back.

Tisgut gets off Wagon and turns his back to the Orc and lifts up his leather shirt. You see that he's got some tattoo on his back. It's done in red ink.

The Orcs lower their axes that the bowmen de-string.

Tisgut talks to them for a while. A new orc comes, this one has a rat skull necklace. Tisgut talks to that one for a bit. He gestures to you and the other Dawnchasers for a moment. Then the returns.

"You share tent circle, no food, no talk. You guests, travel Red Wolf, respect, ask nothing, receive nothing." He says. "You want, you take."

"What about you?" Lea asks.

"Fair enough. We've got provisions of our own. We can talk to each other, right? Just not them?" You ask.

Tisgut nods.

"Tisgut, someday I'll have to figure out the finer points of Orcish culture. But yeah, sounds good." You say.

You set up your camp. The orcs are doing nothing too out of the ordinary. You see some kids running around with sticks. Some men are chopping wood, you see a group head off to get water, and a group return, dragging with them a could of dead deer. Some women get to work skinning it.

Orc women are taller than orc men, but they don't look as muscular, but they're obviously quite strong. They have grey skin, they also have the same tusks and snouts. You couldn't call any of them overly attractive, by human standards. (Isen might give a few sixs or sevens...but Isen is Isen.) However, there are a few that Tisgut seems to be flirting with, so there's apparently some quality that Orks find attractive. Not that you can tell.

"Umm, Ssen." Mage says. "We may have a problem."

He points out across the plains. You see a few small dots, they're getting bigger.

You look over your shoulder. Tisgut isn't getting ready for war, so it's not an Ice Thing.

After a bit, you can see it's about two dozen or so orcs. They're armed to the teeth and are wearing hawk feathers. You don't see a rat skull anywhere.

"Oh boy, fellow tourists." You sigh. "Mage, we do not have a problem. The rat tribe probably has a problem. We are not getting involved with random clan wars."

"And I'm sure these folks with axes, blades, and torches are sure to acknowledge your perfect logic and leave us alone as they rip this place apart." Peri says.

"Right." You wave at Tisgut. "TISGUT!" You shout and wave some more.

Tisgut marches over, he looks amazingly aggravated. "What?! Tisgut have PRESSING matters!"

You point at the advancing crowd. "Do those guys with the hawk feathers have the same relationship with the Rat tripe as hawks and rats do in nature?"

Tisgut rolls his eyes and mutters what have to be some rather explicit words. "Tisgut never leave bed. Every day, someone screaming, every day, new crisis." He looks at you and the others. "Get weapons. Might have to fight."

"Who? Them?" Tricia points at the Hawk Orcs.

Tisgut shrugs. "Maybe, maybe rat, maybe both. Depends. Either way, fighting starts, human not fight, probably die...or become thing. Hawk lots human things." He shrugs. "Then valued...as thing." He walks towards the Hawks. "Tell Rat Chief and shaman." He says to you, pointing at the largest tent. "Shaman speak tongues. He tell chief. Tisgut see reason Hawk here."

>>
>>25884196
>Every day, someone screaming, every day, new crisis
"We've found the orc version of me."
>>
>>25884269
that was one of my mental reasons-to-step-in.

If they're attacking noncombatants? Step in. Taking slaves? Step in. Looting literally -all- the food? Maybe step in.

There's cultural awareness, and then there's when we have to step in.
>>
"We've found the orc version of me." You mutter as you watch Tisgut march off.

"You have cuter toes." Lea says.

Everyone pauses and looks at her.

"Was...was that supposed to be a joke?" Mage asks.

"Yeah...was it not funny?" Lea says.

"No. It...it kinda was." Peri says. "That's why we're surprised."

You head over to the chief's tent. The chief is probably the guy sitting on the large bench. He's listening to what's probably the shaman. He's...no wait...she...is the Orc who is cutting open a bird, spilling out the guts, and studying them intently.

They both look up as you enter. The chief says something to the Shaman. The shaman walks up, to her herself between the Chief and you. You see that she has a large club with large iron spikes in it in her hand.

She's pretty tall, all orc women are tall, but she looks like she's got an inch or two more. She has long black hair in multiple braids with complex looking knots in them. Her skin is a dark grey and she...doesn't have tusks. She's got a smallish snout and there's no doubt that she's 100% an orc, but she doesn't have tusks.

"Why are you present, follower of the Red Wolf? You were instructed to please remain within your own tent and not to trespass upon our own. Please explain yourselves, forthwith."

She also apparently speaks better than half the population of the UFK.

"I was just wondering whether your lookouts have spotted those heavily armed orcs wearing hawk feathers heading in this direction yet. I figured a good guest would give their hosts a heads up." You say.

The shaman turns and says something to the chief. He says something back and stand up and leaves the tent. She turns back to you.

"Thank you for informing us upon the arrival of the Hawk clan fighters. We were expecting their arrival and will now deal with them. Do as you will." She walks past you.

During her last speech, you saw her teeth and figured it out, at some time in this woman's life she had her tusk teeth forcibly removed. Also, those old scars around her wrists and neck probably aren't from combat.

You leave the tent. You see a squad of soldiers assemble, and other orcs retreat behind lines of other soldiers. You see the chief and the shaman. They have two orcs with them. They're young males, and they've been bound, gagged, tied, and it looks like they've been severely beaten and even branded a little. The two boys have hawk feathers on their clothing.

The Hawks arrive, with Tisgut in tow. He talks to the Rats, the chief and shaman speak for a bit, then he turns to the Hawks. They talk for a bit.

You notice that there are three humans in the war party. They're carrying the tent rolls and supplies. It's not like they're carrying everything and to an excessive amount, but it the stuff that the Orcs don't want to carry. Also, they're on leashes.

Tisgut walks up to you as the Hawks and the Rats bark at each other.

"Rats catch thieves. Hawk boys. Stupid. Normally, beat, return, good lesson." He sighs. "Problem, boys not think right, smoke, drink, something." He shrugs. "Fight back, too much." He points at the pair. "Was three. One boy killed. Hawk chief nephew. Huge mess."

"How's it going to end?" Peri asks quietly. She and the other Dawnchasers are there, with their weapons.

"I don't suppose they could be convinced to settle their differences over a game of skill? Nobody ever wants to do it that way." You say.

Tisgut shakes his head. "Hawk not want known thieves. Also, must answer blood. Rat cannot allow thieves, justified in blood, but still kill young." He sighs as he watches the orcs argue and shout. "Complicated. Hand boys over, not option."

"Well, yeah. If only it was so simple as that. Just let them bang their heads against each other. Would that work?" You ask.

Tisgut shakes his head. "No...maybe...too far gone now. Hawk always hate Rat....Rat hate Hawk too...but Hawk always angry." He shrugs. "Hawk want as Boar. Hawk never be as Boar. Boar big, Boar smart, Boar blessed by totem, Honored by Red Wolf, Hawk...not blessed." He sighs. "Just wait, maybe end with challenge, one or two dead. Advised it."

My dice have atoned.

The Hawk Shaman is doing something. She's keeping calm and keeping direct eye contact with the Rat Shaman, but the other orcs can't see what's she's doing behind her back. The other Hawk Orcs are in the way.

You can see it from your position though. She's got a large mass of feathers, they're all slightly stained red on the tips, and she's winding a thin white rope around them, over and over again.
>>
>>25885821
anything show up on magic vision?
>>
>>25885821
Elbow mage and close yer magic eyes. I've no idea what's happening, but it's gonna be good.
>>
>>25885840
Well, she's a magic user, so she naturally glows like Mage does...but her glow is currently brighter than Mage's or the Rat shaman's.
>>
>>25885887
well, she must be doing SOMEthing then.

Oh man if she summons giant eagles we have to steal one
>>
>>25885821
Does the rat shaman know?

We should inform her if she doesn't.

>>

>>
You nudge Mage and point your head at the Shaman. Mage looks for a moment. He frowns and looks confused. "White thread...blood...feathers? Okay, hold on...did this before I got used to the staff." He then starts and looks up and then looks at you. His eyes are wide and he's got a combat grip on his staff.

"Stalking and Invisibility spell! One feather for each person!" He says.
>>
>>25886234
Quick quick pluck the feathers maybehaps?
>>
>>25886234
ooh, that's a nasty one. They'll get free reign to butcher and then turn on us. I suggest we interfere in some way. Mage can use a gust of wind to blow it away, we can practice our championship spitting and burn the feathers, we can inform the shaman and see how she deals with it...
>>
>>25886257
>>25886280
If it were me in our place, I'd just kill the two prisoners. Problem solved.
>>
>>25886319
Nah, not our MO. Also equally likely to cause fighting to erupt.
>>
>>25886319
We ain't like that.

Also my feather plucking idea is cool
>>
>>25886347
a bit overt, but better than nothing. There's all sorts of ways out of this one, we've just got to pick one. I personally like the ideas of using a bit of wind, or adding alternate spell components to foul up the spell.

Or, if you want to do things the easy way, warn the rival shaman. But probably too late for that.
>>
>>25886280
Maybe I'm being unclear. She's not TRYING to cast an invisibility+stalking spell.

She is CURRENTLY IN THE MIDDLE of casting an invisibility spell, and there's a LOT more than two dozen hawk feathers in her hand.
>>
>>25886338
>>25886347
Like I said, if it were me.

Next best solution is having mage prepare some sort of countermeasure to invisibility, like kicking up a bunch of mist or snow to silhouette them in case they turn on us.

After all, it's not our affair unless we are attacked, which we're not sure they'll do.
>>
>>25886434
Can we quick quick the feathers out?
>>
>>25886434
In that case, warn Tisgut. Let him decide what to do - we're outsiders here.
>>
>>25886434
wait, she's making everyone invisible? Strange. Probably going to nab some people in the confusion.

Have mage get ready to blast them with snow. We're too late to stop the spell from being cast, but we can render it ineffective. Also, why not talk to tisgut about it. Tell him the haps.
>>
>>25886540
Quick quick could stop things, so could clear poison on the hand to get her to drop it.
>>
>>25886556
if echo allows it, I'm for a quick-spit. I thought it was sort of too late. Otherwise, let us prepare countermeasures.
>>
>>25886572
It sounds good to me.
>>

>>
>>25886728
We do need to get the shaman to drop the feathers
>>
>>25886728
yeah, I can agree with this. Tisgut will know if it is time to panic.
>>
>>25886741
we'll do that as soon as they make their move. They've not done it quiiite yet.
>>
>>25886804
Gotcha
>>
>>25886620
You nudge Tisgut and point it out to him...but then you look out beyond the squad of soldiers and past the tents and you know you're in trouble.

They must have stayed back, and spread out. They were invisible so naturally Tisgut didn't see them, and you were watching the Hawk party and not looking out at the plains. Also, this place is lousy with hot spots thanks to the damn fires.

Either way, the Shaman drops the bundle of feathers, and now the Rat camp is surrounded by a mass of Hawk soldiers.

Tisgut steps forward and shouts at the Hawks for a bit. The Hawks make a reply. Then Tisgut walks back to you.

"So...prisoners now." He says. "Hawk 'honor' Red Wolf. Plan trade Tisgut for food or *Orc word.* Think weapon." He spits on the ground.

"And what about us?" Mage asks.

"You things. You Hawk thing now." Tisgut says. He snarls and spits on the ground and lets out a curse. "Red Wolf NEVER hostage. Tisgut gave word. Insults all." He looks around at all the orcs and sneers. "Fuck it. Tisgut kill all of them."

Just to keep this in perspective. There's about 50+ of them, surrounding you, with bows and arrows, not to mention the 25 right in the middle of camp.

Tisgut plans to kill ALL of them. By himself.

He looks at you. "You in? Not weak to run, Red Wolf that way, follow peak and star. Easy to run once fight starts. Not your fight."
>>
>>25887089
Kill all of them. We are NOT property.
>>
>>25887089
"You work on killing who you will, I'll kill the ones attacking the camp. Not right to go after the noncombatants.
>>

>>
>>25887089

>>
>>25887089
"You know, Tisgut, I think this could be the start of a wonderful friendship."
>>
>>25887139
he is talking about the hawks not the rats
>>
>>25887089
Tell Tisgut that everyone who doesn't want to die should RUN.

Then we start mixing up cloudkill.
>>
If Tisgut is just a scout I'm scared to meet Red Woves higher on the totem pole than he is.

Or maybe scout is a higher-tier job due to how horrible the tundra is.
>>
>>25887184
that seems extrme
>>
>>25887089
Let's not run. I think we should walk.

We turn around and walk away, and anyone who tries to stop us dies where they stand. Because Tisgut is right, this isn't our fight. But as soon as the Hawks make it our fight, we should make them regret it.
>>
>>25887207
We are kinda badly outnumbered here so really need something to even this up.
>>
>>25887205
>Or maybe scout is a higher-tier job due to how horrible the tundra is.
This is probably the case.

I think we've got a little bit of a translation problem here. From what Tisgut's said and done, he's more of a wandering knight errant rather than a scout - going around, finding problems, and beating the living daylights out of them.
>>
>>25887184
If we do this, ask Mage if he can give everyone in our party breathing enchantments.
>>
>>25887178
the haws are attacking the rats. The ones in the camps too.

We're going to go to the camps and kill the haws attacking them. Is my plan.

>>
>>25887207
Not realy we're outnumbered so we need AoE weapons.
>>
"We are NOT property." You say.

You look at the Dawnchasers. They've drawn weapons and nod at you.

"Shaman first, draw them away from the non-combatant tent." Lea says.

"I'm on arrow shield duty." Mage says.

"I'm already calling every friend I can. I'll blacken the sky with flies." Tricia says.

"We're with you all the way Ssen." Mari/Peri say.

"Lets dance, Tisgut." You say.

Tisgut grins and raises a full bastard sword that he must have taken from the Rats. "Hawks cowards, sneak and hide, Tisgut show what strength IS. Snake Tribe show what strength IS." He nods, and turns to face the Hawk war party who were in the middle of browbeating the Rat leadership and forcing them to their knees.

The Hawk leader asks Tisgut something.

Tisgut's response?

"GWWWWUUUUUUUUUUAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!" As he charges.
>>
>>25887249
true, we've got to scare them off somehow.

we COULD go to the hawk side of the field and start doing our gas. Get our folk to hold back. It would depend a bit on the wind.
>>
>>25887184
If we're going with this, ask Mage if he can throw up some sort of magic airfilter for our comrades, first.

We also don't want to kill the Rat tribe.
>>
>>25887273

>We're the Snake Tribe

>>
>>25887273

We have to match that warcry with something. How loud can we hiss?
>>
>>25887289
I think the sight of a half-snake lady with claws and spikes tearing their advanced party to ribbons would give them some pause.

After all, orcs are pragmatic. It's no use trying to ransom Tisgut off if nobody's alive to collect on it.
>>
>>25887273

I love this guy in a completely non-homosexual manner.

Now let's get mixing!
>>
>>25887273

That's fucking adorable

Anyway, I suggest we stick some kind of unpleasantness of that shaman. Some distraction poison arrows, or claws.
>>
>>25887361
Give her a bite of white?
>>
You guys are forgetting that we need to survive those turns to charge the gas to begin with.

Would it be safer to stick in some sort of ghetto formation for our party or just jump into the thick of things and let everyone handle themselves?

It'd be funny if we literally could a full beacon light charge in 1 round from the sheer amount of attacks we parry but....
>>
>>25887349
we'll see how the spines-and-claws-both-covered-in-venom approach works. It might be scary enough to get them to back off. If not, we should really switch to beacon, as it's got prolonged group fighting benefits.
>>
>>25887395
Geek the make first, then get into sweeping the crowds
>>
>>25887378
a bite, an arrow, white, black, clear, that'll all distract her from spell casting. Black is our general go-to, but if someone wants to authorize something nastier they're free. I think the orcs are sturdy enough to withstand the acid nonlethally, but that's a judgement call.
>>
>>25887408

>>
>>25887361
And with that we close for the evening as I have to plot how you guys, Tisgut, and the Rat tribe are going to fight 75 orcs.

Next thread will be Tuesday, July 9th, 5-7pm PST. And yes, consequence free cloudkill CAN be on the menu!

Geek the mage! Spines and claws, maybe that will scare them a bit. Also, ironically, they're our most nonlethal weapons.

Don't get TOO chemical warfare happy. We're going to try bluster and good old fashioned geeking the mage first. Some tribes are cowards. These guys might be.
>>
>>25887425
yeah, I don't think they'll live through the white. I DO think they'll live through the clear.
>>25887428
because less casualties on both sides is better paliscore. And also, the more orcs that live period the more orcs we can recruit to go to war.

So, you know, a mix of pragmatic and moral reasoning.
>>
>>25887295
>>25887423
Well, Mage did that wind spell on the Kassat. Combine that with Cloudkill and you get a Cloudkill moving in one direction, say a bunch of hawk orc troops.
>>
>>25887522
we never DID actually test to see how it affects various races. Mostly because the vast majority of ways to test it in controlled conditions are evil as fuck. I wonder if orcs are more or less trollish than granny.
>>
Use Beacon, Gain new orcish converts
>>
>>25887551
Probably less. FAAAAR less. From what we've seen I doubt they're much more resilient than a human.

Lamias and Nagas are kinda like nature's munchkins in this setting. Our ancestral blood seems to run a LOT stronger.
>>
>>25887609
Goddamnit anon if the FIRST action of the snake tribe is converting the rat tribe, we'll never be able to live down the metaphorical significance of that.
>>
>>25887629
I think it's because they're failed dragon superbreed attempts.

Wheras whatever peace was is a superbreed attempt made by the dragon of shadows, and they were apparently pretty damn strong. And extinct.

How exactly is poison and speed incarnate a "failure" by anything BUT draconic standards?

We wreck shit, and we're still developing into our inborn abilities. I mean, how long did it take us to figure out we even HAD razor sharp spines and claws, along with at least three kinds of poison?

You know, the way I figure it that isn't our place to decide. If it turns out that there IS something that regulates that process, and souls have to go through some sort of purgatory based on their actions in life, Peace will have to answer one way or another for what she's done. And if we set things up the way they should be, and souls are just blanked or disappear after death, then it hardly matters what our policies are.

Either way, it's not our call what happens once she reaches the Light. It's just our job to arrange the meeting.
