In the great mountains of Granake Th’ull live the mountain trolls. Possessing incredible regenerative abilities and sheer brute strength, trolls make devastating warriors. However, their physical talents are balanced out by their mental one. Or rather, lack of them. Most leaders are merely willing to spend their lives mating, eating and killing anyone stupid enough to wander north.
But the world is changing, and the trolls are changing with it. The trolls further south are starting to learn human speech, use tools and considering not killing every traveller who passes through their territory.
On the great southern peak, ‘Ead Smasha to the trolls, a troll named Gronk has torn control of his tribe from the previous leader. Since killing and eating the old leader, Gronk has grown bigger and stronger. Convinced this is because the old trolls strength has flowed into him, Gronk has sworn to eat every one of his enemies. Naming himself the ‘The Great Devourer’ and the new Big Papa, he is a troll with brains and ambition.

Gronk roared to his children that they should go out and bring him food. In the depths of winter, even the trolls feared to roam the mountain. The blizzards could get a troll so lost, they might fall far enough to kill even them. With the coming of spring, the trolls generally went to find food, but Gronk’s battle with the old leader had distracted them. As they knuckled away, Gronk screamed after them. “Bring me sum goblins! De’ze well tasty!”. In the old days, only the Big Papa was allowed to eat the succulent dish that was goblins. Gronk had never tasted it, but the smell of it haunted him to this day.
When the hunting trolls returned, they brought several goats and two dead goblins with them. More importantly, they had news. Further down ‘Ead Smasha, there was a goblin encampment. The Children’s late start to the season had caused the goblins to think the mountain was devoid of trolls.

Will Gronk share the goblins with the tribe, or choose to maintain tradition and keep it for himself?

We should do a large raid on the goblin camp, then capture as many as possible to create a captive slave/livestock population. And then play it off like starting late so the goblins got cocky was our idea to start with. We's dead clever.

Gronk decided to keep the best of both worlds, so to speak. Giving one goblin to the tribe, he devoured the other himself. The meat was less stringy than mountain goat and less rubbery than troll, but not the heavenly meat he had been expecting. But the tribe seemed fantastically grateful for the mouthful of goblin that each member received. Even more welcome, particularly to the young males, was the news that the there were more goblins nearby.
In the dead of night, Gronk lead the tribe down the slopes, telling them in no uncertain terms that they were to be as quiet as possible. Many of them could hardly suppress their blood lust, which exhibited itself in growling and smashing trees. Even Gronk bludgeoning a troll senseless couldn’t seem to calm them. Choosing to substitute stealth for speed, Gronk roared the charge. As they hurtled down the slope, swinging on the knuckles of their long arms, they saw many of the goblins running down the mountain. Some had gathered up weapons, mostly spears and cross bows. Gronk didn’t know what the cross bows were, until the troll next to him howled and clutched at his face. As the troll had been using his arms to propel himself, he tumbled over, taking several others with him. It was obvious to Gronk that stick throwers were dangerous, but letting goblins get away hurt his pride.

With a bestial howl, Gronk charged the goblins. The noise sent a primal chill through all of them, causing several to drop their weapons and run. However, it shows all of the ones that stand firm who the leader is; it’s Gronk. Near the back of the group, there was a goblin that looked a little different to the others. He wore a red robe and his ears were ragged with piercings. On the right side of his face, some form of tattoo snaked was inked under his skin. Seeing the fearsome bull troll charging them down, he turned his back and muttered an incantation under his breath. A spark of flame appeared, and then guttered out. He cursed, and spoke the incantation again with the same effect, hearing the trolls roar again. They were mere metres away. As the trolls slammed into the goblin line, the tattooed one spoke once more. This time a ball of fire roared into life, and he span around to deploy it. Even as he did, Gronk rose up in front of him, mouth and fists dripping blood. As his bowels emptied themselves, the goblin thrust the artificial fire toward Gronk’s face, high above him. At the same time, Gronk’s fists swung down the judgment of god. The shattered the goblin’s bones and pulped his body, but not before the fire ball connected. Reeling back, the Big Papa screamed in agony. The arcane fire died as quickly as it had appeared, but his face was torn by the brief encounter with the fire. Tumbling backwards, Gronk passed from the realms of consciousness.
Some hours later, the Big Papa awoke. He lay in the cave, his face still searing with pain. He growled in pain, before noticing his surroundings. Quite apart from the abundance of food, there were several dozen live goblins in the corner. There were also several of the stick throwers, somewhat damaged, leaning against the cave wall. In front of him was the body of the fire goblin. With a terrible glee, Gronk devoured the corpse, savouring the meat and the pain in his face. This was the price of victory.

Are we able to have the goblins work for us on the proviso they won't be eaten by us or other trolls, we can use them for doing research and scouting.

After some yelling and slapping, Gronk managed to get the ttibe to relate to him the events of the previous night. After he fell, the younger trolls had taken off after the fleeing goblins, slaughtering most and bringing back a few captives. The whole tribe had then gathered round their fallen chief, planning to devour him together. But, to the group’s shock, Gronk was still alived. Convinced he was blessed and had been chosen by ‘Ead smasha, they dragged him back to the cave and left the greatest share of the goblins to him. One of the younger bulls attempted to eat the fire goblin, and had been torn apart and eaten by the tribe. Where before there had been the devotion of underlings, the tribe now followed Gronk like disciples followed a messiah. Many days were spent roaring his name, from the cave mouth and from the top of the mountain. During his recovery, Gronk spent much time with the females.
The roaring made the Children of the mountain feel mightier than ever before, but also attracted Trolls from the mountain to the North. In troll cant, the mountain was named ‘God Eata’. In ancient times, humans had dragged their sacrifices to it’s peak and left them there. When this source of food dried up, the trolls of that mountain turned on the neighbouring tribes. Long years of bloodshed dissuaded them eventually, but they were still known as the most war mongering of the plans. One of them inflicted an injury on one of the Children’s young trolls, and ordered that Gronk come before their chief to be judged. It has been a long time since the last troll war, and their tribe is not much loved.

When his strength had been recovered, Gronk himself took to roaring of the mountain top himself. With his tribe’s support, he felt more powerful than ever before. However, even with all his power, he could not reproduce what the fire goblin had done. Gronk didn’t know goblin speak, but found that one of the goblins knew a little troll. He found it hard to believe what it told him, but listened none the less. The goblin spoke of great big camps of stone, like caves without roofs, which housed thousands of goblins, humans and other things Gronk had never heard of before. The little goblin, named Tak-Tak by Gronk, said there were even a few trolls. Most of them were captives, but a few wandered around free. Gronk could hardly imagine a troll living alongside goblins and not capturing or eating them. It was through Tak-Tak that Gronk ordered the goblins to begin manufacturing things for him. The material brought back from the camp was cut and remade into bags and over shoulder straps. The bags were troll sized, and sown with rope. They were strong enough to hold several of the rocks the Children favoured for throwing.
This took many days, days full of shouting and feasting by the trolls and hard work by the goblins. Gronk had also hinted to Tak-Tak that he wished for the goblins to reproduce, causing some disruption in the slaves. Tak-Tak asked Gronk if they could build a small enclosure for themselves inside the cave. Privacy was mostly alien to Gronk, but it seemed important to the goblins.
Many of the younger trolls spent a lot of time following Gronk around, listening to everything he said and watching whatever he did. At first it was annoying, but Gronk soon found their presence a reminder of his power.

Guys I think we should team up with the goblins. We don't eat them but we make them our brothers in arms against the other races. We can't always be on the front lines because its is Way WAY hard for us to breed so we fill that niche in by letting the goblins fight for the major battles. Besides they'll build some weapons and become our magic users.

Trolls live for a very long time. They're almost entirely immune from disease and terribly hard to kill. Goblins, on the other hand, live a scant thirty odd years and can die very easily. Infection and disease are big killers for them, much like humans. Trolls don't really feel wither.

It was the common tongue, not goblin speak, that was on offer. This is the language spoken in most major population hubs. It was explained by Tak-Tak that in the big tents with lots of thing in them, everyone speaks that tongue.

In 4X games there is always a trade off between early and late growth. Early growth happens by taking territory and stuff; late growth happens by research and population growth. We have a research penalty and abyssal population growth so we will have to conquer with our intrinsic combat bonuses before the other races get too powerful for us. In the late game we will probably need allies.
