Rose looks at you like you're stupid. "No, of course I'm not ready, Commander, I accepted the the challenge because I enjoy losing!" She says, with every noun and verb of the sentence dripping with sarcasm. "You know, if you spent half as much time attempting to be useful as you did asking useless questions, you'd be a lot farther along!"

You are Russells, commander of the M26E1 Pershing Heavy Tank "Black Jack". And as mean and sarcastic as her comment was, she's probably right- but that's just how Rose gets when she's nervous. She's normally quiet and a bit aloof, add a bit of pressure and she tends to say the first thing that comes to mind. Which is usually a cutting and sarcastic remark.

You still haven't told her about the bets with Darjeeling- she hasn't asked it and it hasn't come up in conversation. Probably for the best- she doesn't need any more pressure. Besides, with the pressure she's under at the moment it might result in something more than a cutting and sarcastic remark.

"So, why the StuG?" You say, deciding that it'd be wiser to change the subject a bit. Maybe getting her to think more about technical stuff than about the upcoming test of targetting prowess will give you a better chance of having the use of both your arms.

"We decided the 75mm was the quintessential gun caliber for World War II." She says, obviously calming down a bit. "Almost every nation used some variation of it on a tank."

"Well, yeah." You say, shrugging. "But why the StuG? It's not even a real tank! It's a tank destroyer!"

She rolls her eyes. "It's got armor, it's got a gun, it's on treads. Close enough." She looks over at the StuG- the history club had already begun the early stages of their camoflague scheme- covering their StuG's sides and rear with layers of hanging rope netting. "The biggest reason, though, is that neither of us has ever worked with the StuK 40 before."

"What about Assam?" You say, leaning against Black Jack. "She any good?" You say cooly. Of course she's good, she wouldn't be the lead tank's gunner if she wasn't. But it wasn't about Assam- it was about Rose's response to her.

"She's good." Rose confirms. "She keeps her cool- I bounced a 90mm shell off her tank's mantlet- a foot and a half in front of her- and she kept firing just as accurately as before. A lesser gunner would've lost her zone." That was perhaps the one hallmark of a skilled and experienced gunner- the ability to put the rest of the world, even the rest of the tank, out of your mind and focus your entire universe down to you, your gun and your target. "I haven't seen her distance shooting, but she wouldn't be that good in the heat of battle if she didn't get a lot of practice at the range." She nods to herself. "I'm going to win this, don't worry, but it's not going to be an easy win."

That was good- a cool calm assessement and confindence in the outcome. Genuine confidence. No bluster, Rose didn't do bluster. Just like when she was shooting she was calm, precise and professional. That's what made her so effective.

>>
>>25865383
...I don't see how the two are related.

>>
>>25865424
We should.
>>
It doesn't take long for the contest to be set up- A series of ten targets would be set up a thousand yards from the StuG- each target would need to be individually targetted. Since there was only one StuG, the girls would take turns. After the first girl was done with her shots, the targets would be replaced. Each gunner would have three ranging shots to test windage and ballistic drop- after which they would have nine more shots to hit as many differant targets as possible.

Rose didn't look nervous as she approached Assam to shake hands and prepare for the coin flip. She closes her eyes, hands at her size as she takes slow, deep breaths. You've seen this before, not just with Rose but with almost any athlete who has to put everything on single, perfect shots- she's picturing the shots ahead of time- visuallizing her win before she even touches the trigger.

Assam looks confident, staring with a look of barely hidden amusement at Rose's preparations. Assam is good, no doubt, but she doesn't understand that Rose isn't just good- the Germans had a word for people of her ability: Experten, a term they used to describe their top aircraft aces, men who's abilities were considered almost super-human.

"Assam: Call it in the air." Momo states as she flips a coin.

"Tails!" She says calmly just before the coin hits the ground.

Momo reaches down and examines the coin. "Tails. Assam shoots first."

she probably has figured out we have bet something on this duel anyway. she's smart enough and knows us good enough to get that.
>>

Well, lucky you.

>>25865818
Actually, its my left hand. Secondly, I've been on plenty of teams where just this sort of thing happened.
>>
>>25865848
I don't think a team with trust issues is the norm, anon.
>>
>>25865818
seems like we have picked up a troll some how. the mods need to come around and spray for them soon.

Blackjack QM, please ignore any more posts to tell Rose about the bet. thank you
>>
>>25865794
Actual, healthy relationships work absolutely nothing like you are claiming.
>>
If we lose, what do we have to do? We join Gloriana for a match and help them kick some other team's butt. We could end up against, I dunno, Anzio, and then it would be an easy fight. Or, we could end up against Black Forest, and then we'd have the unlikely opportunity to take Black Forest out of the tournament.

At the very least, we'd get some intel on our opponents.
>>
>>25865848
That's more a consequence of your teams (or more likely you, given you are the apparent common factor) having abnormal trust issues. Not the norm.
>>
>>25865879
>>25865915

There's nothing I can say to convince you guys, so you win.
>>
>>25865943
Can we even do that? Fight for another team? Aren't we on some kind of contract? I suppose if Anzu agrees to it, it's good to go, but you'd think there would be more issues to it.

You really believe that she's going to HATE YOU FOREVER for having made a wager?

I'll let you in on a secret, okay? The character Rose is a reasonable individual, being written by a seemingly reasonable human being.
Now compared to these 3DPD womancreatures that throw hissyfits and are generally off their rocker, she is not retarded like many of the normalfag population are.
If/when she finds out, she'll give us a good, sound beating (if she can catch us) and call it even.
She will not, I repeat, will not think any less of us for something as little as this.

I know, I know. Responding to a troll.
>>
>>25865978
Well if there IS a problem with that, we won't even have to do it.
>>
>>25865992
It's a wager involving her, without her knowledge, and she will have to pay the price if we lose. She might not expect to make the decision, as we are the commander, but she'll definitely want to know about it. Gender flip it and it makes no difference.
With that pic, it's you who's the troll
>>
>>25866125
Not him, but I'm jumping in.
You are being retarded. Put yourself in Rose's place, you are getting ready for a big showdown, and are feeling the pressure. If I were gunning, I would thank him for not heaping more stress on me right before I do battle.
>>
>>25866125
Troll pic or not, he's still right.
>>
>>25866216
Yeah, this. We should have told her earlier. She is starting her visualization. She needs to stay in the zone.
>>
You know better than to disturb her during her pre-shooting ritual. At best you'll throw off her concentration- at worst you'll throw off her concentration and anger her into physical violence. Either way there's too much on the line to risk any last-minute advice or confessions about the bet.

You learn back against the truck that had transported everyone out to the range. Watching as Assam slides down into the gunner's hatch of the StuG- it had already been driven into position and pointed towards the targets- the only thing that needed to happen at this point was for the gun to be reloaded between shots- Caesar was doing the honors there, giving her a bit more practice in the role.

"So, she's not going to ruin my parade float, is she?" Anzu says from behind you. You turn around to see the red-headed Class President and commander of the 38(t). "Assam is no Momo, you know." She chides before turning to her already-tearing-up gunner. "Sorry, Momo."

also add
"Now that i think about it. Yuzu is a fine enough driver, and we know how Momo is at in gunnery. But we have not see you test out your gunnery skills Anzu. when this is over with, i would like to see you try your hand at it."
>>
You sniff a bit. "Assam's good- damn good." You shake your head. "She's not Rose, though. Not even in the same league." You turn back to the President. "You always give Momo hell for her gunnery- why don't you shoot then and have Momo load or something?" It's a valid observation- why keep Momo shooting if she was that bad at it?

Anzu shrugs. "Never much liked shooting," she says simply. "Momo wanted to be the gunner so who would I be to say no, if nobody else wants the job?"

You're about to make a comment about it, but you let it go- Momo was already improving, however slightly, by the time the tournement starts she might even be useful as something more than a very temperary distraction. Instead you steady yourself against the truck and raise your binoculars to your eyes as Assam starts taking shots.

Rose certainly wasn't wrong- She only misses a single ranging shot before she finds her target on the second. From there the shots seem to ring out like clockwork- she's definately good- of the nine remaining shots she only misses three. A seventy percent hit rate on targets a thousand yards, even against stationary targets, was excellent by any measure.

Assam's gunnery takes about two minutes to complete and she finally climbs out of the gunner's hatch looking pleased with herself. Reserved, of course- a Glorianna girl would never lower herself to gloating, but definately pleased.

Now it's Rose's turn.

You can't beat the Rose. This is known.

"Very good, Assam." Darjeeling compliments lightly as the gunner rejoins her two crewmates. Assam smiles as she takes a spot beside her commander.

As she does this, Rose stands- she had been sitting calmly on the bumper of the truck. As she stands you get a moment of eye contact- you could give her advice, tell her she's got this, but instead you just nod. You have complete confidence in her and her ability. You give her the slightest of nods, a communication that you're as confident as she is. That you trust her completely when she says she'll win.

As she slides down into the gunnery match, you watch as that trust is validated- you watch through you binoculars as she puts the 75mm round squarely through the center of the far-left target on her first practice round. Then, like a machine, she moves from left to right, putting one round after another into target after target.

One. Two. Three hits. You look over at Assam, who's calm confidence is already beginning to falter. The fourth and fifth shots and she looks nervous. On the seventh shot Assam's shoulders fall- if Rose missed every shot from here out it would still be a tie. Rose didn't settle for that, though, as her eighth shot hits home.

Eight shots. Eight hits.

There are no cheers, just a stunned silence from both the girls of Glorianna and Oorai. Eight hits in a row was difficult many modern tankers, using hyper-velocity shells, laser rangefinders and computer-aided aiming. Rose had done it with antiquated sights on a gun she had never used in her life.

A few seconds later, Rose emerges from the top of the StuG. "You've got two more shots!" You shout with a grin, breaking the stunned silence at what she had just done. What else could you say? Good job? Great shooting?

She rolls her eyes as she pulls herself out. "You going to pay for them?" She says flatly before she turns and nods her appreciation to the still stunned-silent Assam. "Good shooting." She compliments the Glorianna gunner.

Assam nods back silently. She looks like she's had some sort of religious experience.

Rose slides down the back of the StuG and approaches you. "So, what did you bet on me?" She askes simply as she shakes out her harms and wipes some sweat from her hair- you can't tell whether it was from the heat of the un-airconditioned StuG or from effort of her gunnery.

You blink a couple times, before putting on your most innocent looks. "I'm insulted! Who said I would ever-"

Rose cuts you off with a look. "Because I know you better than that..."

You're caught, but you break into a grin as you turn to Glorianna's lead tank crew. "So, Darjeeling. I believe you owe us a tank?"

Sell it to a museum, I'm thinking. It'd be too mean to just list it off as scrap.

Of course, this is all dependant on just what *is* the tank that we'll be receiving from the Brits--whether it be the juggernaut/money sink that is the TOG II, or a fixer-upper of a Centurion, Churchill, or Cromwell.

>>
>>25867876
the I-Go can still be useful as a scout, having great tanks means fuck all if we don't know where the enemy is

I say we outfit the thing for fast and quiet running, give it some better optics and a decent radio, maybe some different coloured smoke rounds for signalling and it should be great
>>
>>25867882
I do think he means centurion, I have walked through fields of rusting centi's that were thrown away or used as targets
>>
>>25867890
According to the rules we can't add anything that would make it better than it actually was.
>>
>>25867878

To be fair, hitting eight stationary targets under ideal conditions is completely different from hitting moving targets that are shooting back on potentially uneven ground, on the move, etc.

She's good, of course, but even with that don't expect that sort of performance mid-battle.
>>
>>25867890
I'm pretty sure any engine good enough to make the I-Go move more than 20 kmph would have enough torque to tear it into two I-Go's. On the plus side each half I-Go would be about as useful as the whole one.
>>
>>25867890

You want to get in a real tank? Fine. First take this Type 97 and take it for a lap. Around the ship. And if it breaks down on the way--which it will--you have field repair it and finish the lap. It is now 1500. You have until 1700.
>>
>>25867876
>Centurion
Amazing tank, but not likely. Would be great off the bat.

An excellent heavy tank we could use as a HQ, unfortunately too slow as a Rabbit team replacement tank.

I'm amazed if we get anything with an A-number higher than 15.... so, my money's on an early british cruiser (crusader if we're lucky). As a replacement for the I-go, it's good (it has a gun, and it's reasonably fast), but that's about it, really...
