Well hey, it's time for a late VALKYRIAN MERCS QUEST!

Archive: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Valkyrian%20Mercs%20Quest

Don't know what Valkyria Chronicles is? Check it out here! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valkyria_Chronicles or http://valkyria.wikia.com/wiki/Valkyria_Wiki

Also, I'd like to take the opportunity to answer a concern in the the Q&A thread last night.

>I'm just gonna put this out there before I go to sleep, but I honestly don't feel right getting with Sam just yet, and let me try (in my sleep-deprivation-addled ramblings) to explain.

>Jager doesn't have any real closure on his last relationship. It just sorta, stopped. Until he can get that closure, which he can only really get by confronting Karla about the whole thing, it just doesn't feel right. Like he's just using her to make the pain go away. And that's not fair to anyone involved. We've already established that some part of Jager does still love Karla, and that small part is gonna niggle at him, keep him or Sam from being really happy with each other, until he can properly let go.

>It seems that the best option is to tell Sam that yes, we will, as soon as we get that closure, and explain this whole thing to her.

>And as someone who Sam has won over from the Karla camp, it honestly feels like any chance of Karla winning got meta-curbstomped by her utter lack of screentime. Kinda like watching a footrace between a member of the track team and a kid who's been hogtied. Sam's in literally every thread, while Karla's just kind of a shadow character.

My official reply is that (spoiler for meta knowledge) the fact that Karla is largely absent from the story was a deliberate thing on my part. It was partly to prevent metagaming, and partly because Karla is the Unknown. Jager naturally has no idea what her current thinking is at this point, and for all intents and purposes, may as well be a complete stranger to him.

So, in addition to the "past vs. present" conflict between Karla and Sam, there's also the "known vs unknown". You can play the "safe" route and go with Sam, or you can forgo that and take a leap of faith for Karla. That's not to devalue going with Sam, though. Staying with the known means Jager will have to let go a lot of what's made him the man he is today, which is a leap of faith in itself.

Anyways, to the meat of the matter...

You are JAGER STURMFUHRER, leader of the fledgling mercenary company DEMONS OF RANDGRIZ. In addition to fighting Imps for money and vengeance, you have your own private mission to hunt down Karla, your former fiance who sided with the Imperials and destroyed your home.

You first arrived in the Federation nation of Albion to help defend it against a possible amphibious attack. However, your boots barely hit the deck before you were assigned a mission to break up a spy ring. However, through a chain of extraordinary events, you not only smashed the spy ring apart, but also managed to capture an Imperial u-boat (mostly) intact, and figh off an Imperial amphibious invasion by defeating their leader, Belkan Knight Sir Fleisher.

You then moved on to Ustio, where you helped the beleaguered defenders fend off an Imperial offensive and stage a counterattack. While there, you also took care of a personal mission for Qyburn, got a new weapon called the Buzzbomb, recruited some new squad members, and helped Isolde regain her honor by defeating the Knight leading the Imperial forces in the area, breaking the back of the Imperial offensive.

You then celebrated The Feast of All Saints, giving everybody some presents to strengthen your bonds with them. You then headed back to Gallia, only to find out the civil war hasn't been going well for the Loyalists. Things are desperate enough that they've hired you to participate in an upcoming mission.

You've also visited your old castle to find that your exiled grandmother had returned, and is trying to get the place back up and running with the help of some Darcsen refugees. You then rescued Cordelia from the GRA.

Unfortunately, during the mission, your XO Sam, who had earlier expressed romantic interest in you, took a near fatal hit. Her near death experience has prompted her to openly confess her feelings for you.

Fortunately for you, the hospital room is completely empty except for you two, meaning nobody else has overheard Sam's outburst.

But the lack of people also makes the room deathly silent. You just stare in shock at Sam, whose face is still crimson red, but with a very doggedly determined expression which tells you she's not joking or pulling your leg. She's dead fucking serious about this. You don't think giving her a half assed answer like you did at the boardwalk would satisfy her this time.

Sam knows how messed up Jager is better than anybody. Hell, probably better than Jager does.

She also knows, thanks to this last battle, that either of them could take an unlucky bullet and die at any moment. When you die, or lose someone close to you, you don't want a bunch of "what ifs" to be the only thing on your mind.

Dude, I WANT Sam, but I want it AFTER we've had the chance to make it genuinely be OVER with Karla, to tell her that we're done, that no matter her reasons we can't spend the rest of our life with her, even if we wish we could. That way we don't do something dickish to Sam like calling her Karla in an intimate moment.
>>25784848
>She also knows, thanks to this last battle, that either of them could take an unlucky bullet and die at any moment
Relationships that are the result of "we could die any time" are not actually all that stable and usually end in flames.

Saying No would have been the harsh kind way. It also, importantly doesn't cut out the chance of saying yes later down the road.

Now everyone is getting hurt. And if we hurt Sam after this, no way in hell the relationship will be repairable.

I also think Jager wants to wait until after he sorts things out. But Sam wants Jager to stop being a non-committal bitch and give him a straight-faced yes or no answer, and sometimes you have to compromise your plan and just go with the flow.

Saying yes is trying to move on, MC even basically confirmed that. I don't think everything is going to perfect for the two, at least not until Karla is put completely behind. Saying no here with that in mind is just another "maybe later" and I want Jager to finally take a stand on what he wants to get out of this mess instead of being a confused ball of anger.
>>
/tg/ is pretty bad at this romance thing.
>>
>>25784933

Sure but... you know going with the flow and atmosphere sometimes also means that theres really nothing of substance underneath if you're so easily influenced.

Like a kid accepting a confession and going out with a girl just because, why not. Doesn't end well or last long.
>>
>>25784994

Key word, unfortunately, is trying.
>>
>>25784841
I was originally a Karlafag, but seeing Sam almost bite it on Sunday/Monday (while at work) hit a little disturbingly close to home. I can't put it into words very well, but I think Jager coming to terms with his past and moving on will be greatly aided if he's not constantly fighting a solo battle against the "hulk out and punch a straight line to Karla" instinct. Not expertly worded, but I think IC Jager realizes/realized that he can't just be all wishy-washy about it.
>>
>>25785009
You are 100% right, but if there is nothing of substance between Sam and Jager then my name is Queen Elizabeth The Second.

>>
>>25785009

>>25785025
Trying doesn't mean failing. By that argument we'd just be trying to put this off until we deal with Karla and we could just fail to live through the confrontation, or fail to actually move on.

I'll try to use a metaphor for this. Jager is an alcoholic. And he is downright NASTY when he's drunk. And he knows this. And he doesn't want to put Sam through that, so he promises her he's going to get help and sober up, and that they can be together once that happens, but not before, because he doesn't want to hurt her.
>>
>>25785063
My personal choice is to honestly not get into any romantic relationships at all.

If we do get romantic we should leave it until after we're done dealing with everything.
>>
>>25785137
Same here. Romance, I've found, tends to make the entire game go to shit.
>>
>>25785137
I actually kind of liked this romance between Sam because it actually got some gradual build up and came off a bit naturally, plus it also provided a good moment to give some character development to Jager. Admittedly, /tg/ basically pulled this off mostly on accident, so /tg/ sucking at romance still stands, but hey.
>>
>>25785131
That metaphor would work only if you cut out the "downright NASTY" part because Sam is in no way shape or form in danger of being on the receiving end of Jager's Holy Wrathâ„¢.
>>
>>25785119
I know of someone who was named after toilet paper.
Parents be crazy.
>>
>>25785131
This is a good analogy, but to continue with the theme: Sam also knows that we're an alcoholic (to some degree). She was originally content with waiting for us to get help, but nearly biting the bullet in a disturbingly literal sense has made her realize that she doesn't want to wait for "maybe sometime down the line this'll all get fixed"
>>
>>25785131
Why can't he get help from her? Sam has been a reliable and understanding person through this whole quest and she knows this is hard for him, she isn't the type to not help him through this.

>Romance, I've found, tends to make the entire game go to shit.
Let's be honest, it IS doing that already. While I like Sam a lot (I'll admit, I am a Samfag), early in the quest Karla served the convenient role of preventing any waifu wars like we're in now from happening.
>>25785191
No, but he is in danger of her hurting her anyway. I mean, imagine that they get together, and while he's asleep in her arms after their first night, he remembers his first time with Karla. He wakes up the next morning, and in the haze of having just woken up, he calls Sam "Karla". He immediately snaps fully awake, realizes what he did, and he tries to apologize, but he still just called her by the name of the woman who killed his family and burned his home. That's a pretty low blow. Now while I don't doubt that Sam will understand, and come around if that were to happen, I don't want her getting hurt like that at all if we can dodge it.
>>25785279
>>25785285
Good point, and it gave me an idea.
Maybe a promise that yes, they are together, but with an understanding that they can't "be together" in the sexual sense until Jager gets his shit straight, so he can be sure that he's making love to Sam, and Sam alone, rather than using Sam as a stand-in for Karla.
>>
>>25785451
>early in the quest Karla served the convenient role of preventing any waifu wars like we're in now from happening.

Talk about selective memory, some people were already thinking about going for a girl who didn't burn Jager's castle to the ground.
>>
Near death experiences lead to romance. This happened with the sniper fighter between Alek and Elsa. If Heloise wants a boyfriend before this quest is over she's gonna need to see more action.
>>
>>25785451
>Maybe a promise that yes, they are together, but with an understanding that they can't "be together" in the sexual sense until Jager gets his shit straight, so he can be sure that he's making love to Sam, and Sam alone, rather than using Sam as a stand-in for Karla.
This is why I voted "yes, but warn her..." or something along those lines. So long as Sam is okay with it (it seems a bit of a cop-out relationship-wise, and she's probably had enough of that) it makes a whole lot of sense
>>

It takes you several agonizingly long seconds to tr and articulate an answer. Deep down, you sort of suspected this would happen some day, but you never wanted to admit it. Ever since you first met her, Sam had been nothing short of amazing. You're sure that any other man would've jumped at a chance to hook up with Sam, you included, but why were you so hesitant?

And then it hit you like an icy fist to the gut.

Karla.

A part of you had never stopped loving and pining for her, even after all the horrible things she did to you and your family. But... that part of you was doomed to fail. It was chasing a shadow of Kalra, a cheap imitation built from your childhood memories of her. That sweet girl you used to know didn't exist any more. Replaced with that monster wearing her skin.

Even though you haven't seen her for two years, she was still dictating your life from within your tormented heart. Well no more.

You don't know what changed her so, but you are going to damn well find out.

With Sam at your side.

"Yes, Sam." You smile, as if a great weight had been lifted from your shoulders. "I don't know if it'll work, but I will sure as hell try."

"R-really?"

"Congratulations, Sam, you just got promoted." You grin nervously clasping her hand in yours. "To the rank of girlfriend."

"T-that's so freaking c-corny..." Sam laughs, tears in her eyes.

You start laughing too until another cold realization hits you. What would happen if anybody else found out about this?!

>>

I can't help but imagine Karla challenges her to a duel with any weapon and Sam brings her anti-armor Lance (a good way of fighting armored techs and their offshoots; let's see those shields tank explosives!)
>>
>>25785791
Yeah, but when you're The Big Man, there's an extra level on top of it, relating to the nature of your interaction with your troops, and the nature of interaction with a lover, combined with the disparity of power involved, and a bunch of other factors. Fraternization regs actually do have a purpose.
>>25785821
Personally I find myself hoping Karla accepts it, but slams Sam up against the wall, knife at her throat, and pulls some threat along the lines of "If you ever hurt him, I will hunt you down and gut you. He's already had his heart torn out once, he doesn't need that again. Not ever. So you be better to him than I was. You be better to him than any woman ever was to any man in the history of Europa. He deserves that much."
>>
>>25785947
Maybe Sam uses her lance as a melee weapon.
>>
>>25785821
My theory is that Karla's plan is going to try and make a pact with Gallia, probably through marriage with Jager, with the idea being that it's something he can't refuse for the sake of his country, since Gallia is weak from the civil war and Belka would be an invaluable ally for it's intel on the Imperials. Jager will be forced to choose between his country and his love just like she was and will come out the better man.

Kind of puts a sad look on their whole relationship, though. It started as a political arrangement, it ended from another political arrangement, and she tries to get it back with another political arrangement.

Ah, fuck it. The way things go around here, everybody was going to find out anyways. Might as well straight up tell them than have it filtered through the rumor mill.

But first...

You kneel down beside the bed and give Sam the longest, most passionate kiss you can manage. It's been so long you were honestly a bit afraid you would forget how to. But, if anything was wrong, Sam didn't complain.

"W-wow." Sam blinks. "Y-you're really good at kissing!"

"Well, a young noble has to learn how to kiss lots of ass at some point." You joke, not quite having the heart to tell her that you had plenty of practice with Karla in days long past.

"I can imagine." Sam laughs.

"So, you feel up to walking?" You ask.

"What about the doctor?"

"Sam, since when did we ever listen to doctors?"

"That's a good point." Sam starts sliding out of her bed, stumbling and using your shoulder as a makeshift crutch.

"You okay?"

"Y-yeah. I'm fine." Sam nods. "Just let me change into my regular clothes."

You instinctively turn away as she begins pulling off her hospital shirt, and Sam laughs.

"Come on, Jager, we're a couple now. It's fine if you look."

Crap, this was going to take a lot of getting used to. Fortunately for you sense of modesty, most of Sam's chest was still covered in bandages, though you've been told that thanks to your quick application of ragnaid, her injuries had healed very well. There probably wouldn't even be any scarring.

After that little episode, you help Sam down to the yard outside the hospital, where the rest of the Demons are milling about, waiting for news. You see their expression brighten as you approach with Sam.

"So... I got a bit of news." You say. "Obviously, you see that Sam is awake and totally fine."

Everybody cheers.

"And... um... I'm not quite sure how to put this... but we're also a couple now."

And to your mild annoyance, nobody seems surprised at all.

And you smile stupidly as the rest of your squad blanches, while Sam turns crimson red again.

"Nah, I'm just fucking with you. The Sturmfuhrer fund means DRINKS ARE ON ME!"

Well, that certainly got them all happy, and you all move off to look for any open bars. With the liberation of Randgriz, many of the inhabitants were slowly starting to return and open up their businesses. Well, if you couldn't find an open bar, you figure you could just break into one and leave the money behind as compensation.

"So... was there any news of Matt and Artya while I was out?" Sam asks nervously.

"Ah, yeah. Your dad finally made contact with Lanseal. Matt and Artya are both fine ,and are in fact raising all kinds of hell against the GRA down there."

"That's good to hear!" Sam breathes a sigh of relief. "One more thing off my chest!"

Fortunately, you DO find an open bar, which is already nearly filled to the brim with Gallian troops who had participated in the liberation of Randgriz. Well... it was a bit crowded, but it would do.

You enter the bar, which is a flurry of rowdy singing and drinking as Gallian troops celebrate their first major victory against the GRA in a long time.

The bartender looks up, wondering how many more troops have decided to charge their way into his establishment, when his eyes widen.

"Hey.... hey you!" He points at you.

"Yeah?" You ask?

"Y-you're the Demons, right? The Demons of Randriz?"

At that, the whole bar turns silent as everybody turns to look at you.

Looking back at what Karla has done is... sobering. She was forced to choose between her people and the man she loved, and in the end the needs of the many outweighed her own personal happiness. I think that every day she's reminded of her choice, when she sees her men fencing, when someone makes a joke, all the little day to day things that remind her of what she had to give up. Its... unhinged her a bit, and a small, manic part of her is desperately trying to get back to her "one true love". Her crazy plan was hatched by that small part of her mind that desperately want to hold Jager again, to see him smile and listen to him whisper sweet nothings into hair as they clutch each other. When she gets word of our relationship with Sam, it will break her.

You decide to go check up on Alek first. After all, he was pretty badly wounded during that fight, and he was also acting like a freaking beast, taking out dozens of GRA guards with that monster ATR of his while on the move.

You can spot with a sniper rifle too. We can set them up as a team of sniper/spotter alternatively or we can have them blaze away.

It just helps flexibility.
>>
>>25788113

I'm sure she'll enjoy killing stuff alongside him far better.

Honestly, the best use of spotting seems to be in a counter-sniper role to me.
>>
>>25788057
Depending on the situation, having two killy guns might be better than just having a single extra-killy one.

She can still spot for him when the situation call for it, but she is a good soldier on her own merits. Giving her a rifle doesn't automatically mean she can't spot for Alek ever again.
>>
>>25788154
Give her a rifle so she can pop officers after Alek demolishes their staff car.
>>
>>25788154
Does she need to be a pure spotter to activate that potential? I thought it was just proximity
>>
>>25788154
And there's also the fact that the spotter is traditionally the one with the higher ACC.
>>
>>25788132
Several reasons.

Have you ever fired long distance? I mean looong distance. You can barely see where your bullet hits. The spotter can spot where it does and call for corrections. Not to mention giving you range, windage, humidity, and all sorts of other useful things.

Another reason is target acquisition. Two pairs of eyes are better than one.

"Yeah, I sorta figured that." You nod. "And Alek, what was up with that whole berserker rage I saw going on there? You were like, freaking unstoppable."

"Yeah... well... I've always been kinda like that." Alek frowns. "When by blood gets running I just kinda... lose it or something. It's actually kinda why I tended to avoid people... because I was scared of that happening again.."

"Don't be silly, you were AMAZING!" Elsa reassures him.

As tempting as it is, you decide to decline Elsa's "generous" offer.

"No thanks, I think I'm good." You say.

"Awwww, but I have so much to each you, like these cool little tongue tricks..."

"I think that's enough, Elsa." Alek sighs.

"But, but, TONGUE!"

"Okay, that's it." Alek leans over, clamps his teeth over one of Elsa's ears, and starts nibbling on it.

"Gaaaaaaah!~" Elsa squeals.

"Whoa, that's a pretty cool trick, Alek, how'd you learn that?" You ask.

"You do not want to know."

"Alek, I think my other ear needs some attention..." Elsa coos.

And with that, you believe it's time to give the two lovebirds a bit of privacy. You then bump into Elizabeth, who seems to have been in a rather engaging conversation with a girl you recognize as one of the maids you rescued from the palace. Elise, was it?

"Oh, hey Captain." Elizebeth nods to you. "Sorry about bumping into you like that."

"Ah, I see you've maid some new friends!" You say happily.

Lately, you've noticed that Elizabeth had been acting a bit... odd whenever you tried to bring up the subject of her castle infiltration. Her reports on it were indescribably vague, which was odd coming from someone like her, who usually filled out her paperwork to a T, like Sam. However, seeing how friendly she was with those maids, you have your suspicions...

"You know, there seems to be a few gaps in your report, like you were trying to skirt around the issue or something like that..."

You see Elizabeth visibly wincing. You could almost see the gears turning in her head, trying to figure out if you knew her dark secret.

Oh, you will. You will.

"But anyways, that had to be one of the most effective infiltrations I've ever seen. A real clean sweep, I must say. You just went in and go the job done with no frills."

And then you see it. Elizabeth's dawning realization that her attempts to hide it have failed. However, you need to be absolutely sure, so you decide to hit the final nail in the coffin.

"Hey, Elise, was it? Wasn't her disguise just amazing?"

"It was!" Elise nods, totally oblivious to the secret war between you and Elizabeth. "Even though they were really embarrassing to wear, Elizabeth really knew how to make them look good!"

Checkmate, Elizabeth. Checkmate.

Is this going to net us a potential?
Alcohol Immune
>>
Well, with Toughness primary, it was just a matter of time before we became immune to all mortal forms of intoxication.
Except for the one called LOVE!
>>
Seriously, didn't Sam nat 1 the last time she did this? She just has no luck with these things.
>>
awww Elizabeth is basically Fem Ian Fleming who wears a maid outfit.
>>

What a terrible potential!
>>
>>25789818
Just checked the thread. She got a nat 1 and we got a nat 20. That is three nat 20s on outdrinking Sam.

Not when the next enemy commander is a raging alcoholic.

Okay, our next duel is going to be a drinking contest.
>>
>Sam is great at holding her drink
>canonically pretty much scared us off of challenging her to a drinking game
>have the fucking greatest luck possible when drinking with her.
>>
>>25789864
And again, the next few rounds, you manage to get through pretty easily. However, you notice Sam has not been faring well, and you're afraid she's going to just pass out like last time.

>Nah, let's keep going. She'd want it that way.

Even if she might want to keep going, it's time to be the responsible adult.
She just came out of the hospital, and she does not need alcohol poisoning on top of being shot.

One more round, Sam. Winner takes all! Make it a lower-alcohol drink, like Schnapps
>>
>>25789930
You're wrong. We have 3 19s, but in three different groups of three. the chance of getting a 19 as part of three different rolls is 14.2625%, which means it is a .290126% chance of getting three in a row, or about 1/344 chance.

>>25789948
>We should stop it right here.

Time to be responsible, tell her that she is close to passing out and if she passes out we won't be able to kiss or fuck with the rest of the Demons.
>>
>>25789979
Technically, he just accepted her challenge. Still kind of irresponsible, though.

>>We should stop it right here.

Wouldn't want her to pass out.
>>
>>25789991
He never asked about groups of three, just the odds of getting 3 19 in a row, see previous statements about VMC and braining. But yeah, you're right about that.
>>
>>25790000

She should be fine. Wouldn't want someone to over do it though.
>>
>>25790034
Well my answer isn't quite correct for the situation I described. The 1/344 is actually the chance for getting at least one 19 in each of the three groups of three, it encompasses each of the different groups of three having one, two, or three, 19s, but it's close enough for government work.

The big question in that situation would be if Jager would be big spoon or little spoon
>>
>>25790111
There is only one person who is allowed to be Jager's big spoon, and that's Sam if she wants to be the big spoon for a night, she's earned that right, nobody else.
>>
>>25790111
>Jager and SIR ERIK SCHNEE spooning

"Okay Sam, I think you've had enough." You say, putting a hand on her shoulder.

"B-but."

"No buts." You say sternly. "You just got out of the hospital. It's not healthy, and you're obviously not at your best. You're going to take it easy now."

"O-okay." Sam sighs.

The rest of the night is spent with wild partying with the rest of the Demons. There's some fighting some flirting, and all the other stuff you'd expect hopelessly drunk people to do. However, even you all have limits to your endurance, and one by one people either start filing out of the bar or just passing out on the spot.

You're not quite sure if you made it back to your bunk, collapsed on the street, or are still actually in the bar. In either case, you've fallen asleep.

However, this time, it's not a nightmare. It actually rather pleasant, in fact. You're standing in a bright green field, like the ones outside Castle Sturmfuhrer, with Sam at your side, holding your hand. Something compels you to look up into the distance, where you see a worryingly familiar silhouette disappear into the trees. But your attention is immediately grabbed again by Sam, who just has the biggest and most infectious smile on her face.

And you can't help but smile back.

>And that's it for tonight! I'll be back on July 8th, so have a great July 4th weekend, everybody!
>>
>>25790192
>no more nightmares for Jager

Thanks for the thread MC. I'm really glad I got be here for this one. This was the most civil and sensible waifu war I've ever seen. /tg/ even avoided jumping to fetishes and whining about everything. Best we got was some heated arguments and a few people getting antsy over a shitstorm. All in all, pretty damn fun instead of frustrating.
>>
>>25790307
As far as the waifu-war went in this thread, I felt that there were good arguments on either side. I think that helps contribute a lot to civility

Not being American, I don't celebrate 4th of July, but VMC is reason enough to celebrate, for me.

Thanks for running the quest.
