So, this past week's been kind of hectic. Got some work done on the outlines and notes for you writefag types (assuming you're not just figments of my imagination, which, to be fair, is equally possible), probably week after next for that.

Also, started some side project work, writefagging in the SWQ pacific. should be fun, assuming I can still do that passably.

Anyway, archives here: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Strike%20witches%201989
and a sheet with a short rundown on the characters and some of the more major plot points so far: http://pastebin.com/zFxWNup1

Sorry about the late start, gents.

++

The colonel, to his eternal credit, has apparently impressed both Goose and Rosalie.

You're pretty sure his fluency in French- Parisian and Cajun- didn't hurt, you didn't catch a single word of his and Rosalie's conversation at all. That and he honestly does try to affect the airs of a gentleman confederate colonel, circa 1862 or so, when the war still looked good for their side. You suspect it's something of a far cry from yourself and any other American males she's met up to this point. To be fair, though, the colonel is a pretty friendly guy, and hard to not like.

Similarly, he's afforded Goose every courtesy that he's 'expected' to show a true lady. She seemed hesitant at first, not quite sure what to make of the whole thing.

Of course, that changed when he mentioned his horses. They're stabled a bit away from the runway- though their pasture runs close enough that you'd be worried about horse crap constituting a FOD hazard. To be fair, though, the colonel only operates prop aircraft out of this place, and FOD isn't quite as big a deal for them. You'd ridden over in his old farm pickup, and Goose fell into helping him out almost as if by nature- it took you a second to remember she's a farm kid, and was probably raised around horses.

/13
>>
Currently, she's off riding with the Colonel's grandson- who's about the same age as her. It was almost cute, when he'd rode up and offered Goose a hand up to ride behind him. She'd promptly asked the colonel if she could ride one of the horses, without looking quite at his grandson. When he'd said yes, she'd saddled it by herself and borrowed a rifle from the barn rack- just a little .22, but after seeing her shoot in combat, you've got no doubt she's every bit as capable with it as her M60. Girl makes Ice's aim look almost sloppy- she's an artist in fire and lead. Kind disconcerting, really.

Meanwhile, in the Hangar, Rosalie found something of her own to fawn over. A pair of D.520 strikers occupy a stand next to some French fighters under restoration. Pre-martian war, the fighters are probably some of the last of their kind.

“You know,” The colonel says, scratching his chin. “We could really use someone to take those strikers up for a spin. We've only been able to try out the engine, but the few witches with our group haven't been able to come out this way for a spell.”

Rosalie's head popped up at that, and the two of them exchanged some fast French. She then executed the fastest striker scramble you've ever seen- you swear her shoes practically ejected from her feet. You're just glad she bothered to wear the issue skirt- she probably didn't expect to be flying today.

2/3
>>
Still, the colonel smiled as the magical engine fired up with a tinny buzz, the propellers manifesting themselves out of thin air. Rosalie's taxi 'roll'- hovering off the ground a few inches as she leans forward, was unusual- you're used to seeing wheels, afterall. Kind of speaks to the skill the older witches had, to balance those things like that while taxiing.

The two of you watch her take off, executing a gorgeous loop as she climbs out. The colonel shakes his head and mutters something before turning to you.

“Well, young sir,” he says, motioning to the largest of the hangars along the strip, home to his rather impressive collection of restored and flying warbirds. “I suppose you'd fly today too?”

[] To be honest, sir, I kinda thought I'd like to keep my boots on the ground today.

[x] You sure, colonel? I'm not as up to speed on prop aircraft as you are.

You'd expected him to be generous- he always has been, up to the point of taking you up on your first flight, years ago, in an open-cockpit biplane- but these warbirds are a pretty significant investment, and hard, if not downright impossible in some instances, to replace.

“You sure, Colonel?” You ask, hesitantly. “I'm not as up to speed on prop aircraft as you are, and I'd hate to bend or break one of your birds.”

He laughs and claps a hand on your shoulder. “Frank, young sir, you're as born a pilot as any man I’ve ever met. I trust you'll do as well as I would if something happens.”

It's a pretty strong voice of encouragement.

Inside the hangar, four beautifully restored warbirds sit, looking, probably, a lot like they did some forty odd years ago, when they rolled out for their check and delivery flights. Two of them bear the deep blue of the wartime USN, one's chrome catches the hangar lights bright enough you'd swear the whole thing was routinely polished, and the last wears the brilliant white finish of the wartime IJN proudly.

1/2
>>
You stop to take it in- the colonel's well-known as a collector and restoration guru, but these four birds represent something else, to you, a living link to your service's past. Kind of awe-inspiring. Plus, as you've heard before, especially from your grandfather, any man who thinks these birds aren't gorgeous has no soul.

“It's always a hard decision,” the colonel muses, handing you a civilian headset. “Personally, sir, I prefer the Mustang, but maybe you'd prefer something closer to your own mount? The A6M5 handles well, we restored her from an air racer, years ago. The Corsair can be a bit of a handful, but the Tigercat...” He nods. “The F7F-1N. We pulled her from the abandoned airfield at midway, believe it or not, about a year ago.” he shakes his head. “Shame to just leave an old warbird to rot like that, sir. Shame. She's as good as new, now, though.”

[x] Corsair? Let's see if I can handle the bent wing widowmaker like the old VF-17 guys.

“Corsair, huh? Wasn't that mostly a marine corps plane?” You ask, walking around the fighter. You've heard it described as big, but it's positively tiny compared to your Wyvern.

The colonel nods. “She came out of an old, forgotten depot in west Texas. Never did really find out where she was headed, we think she was destined for the Pacific.” he sighs. “A lot of history got abandoned after the war, young sir. Terrible loss.”

You grin. “Well, let's see if I can handle the bent wing widowmaker like the guys from VF-17. Hear to tell they did a hell of a job out in the islands.”

The colonel nods. “That they did, sir. They'd be.. let's see. VF-84, today. In this bird, though, they scored 152 victories with 11 aces.”

Thumping down in the cockpit is a bit different- one modernization is that the seat's been raised to account for your lack of a parachute. Still, looking out over the long nose and the engine, you can see why carrier ops in this plane were such a nightmare- your visibility sucks.

The colonel hops up onto the wing, and begins pointing out the various switches, knobs, and dials, and what they all do. Not for the old timers, your MFDs and RIO in the back- fuel mixtures, throttle, propeller pitch controls, battery, magneto, generators... the list goes on, and you thank whatever patron god covers you that you're a fast study.

Finally, he jumps down, and standing off your wing, gives you a thumbs-up, signaling you to start her up.

Prop engines start different than turbines. In your jet, there's a whine that quickly builds up to a screaming roar as they come to life. In this bird, it's a coughing roar that transitions into a constant thunder, the prop sending little vibration ripples through the plexiglass windscreen as it gains it's correct RPM.

1/2
>>
The colonel taps his headset twice, and you click over to the ground frequency after looking around for the radio controls for a second.

“One last thing, young sir. Rockets or Fuel?” He asks with a grin.

“I... what?” You return, confused. He waves it off.

“Wartime joke, I'm afraid. Came from one of our older members. I'd be obliged if you didn't exceed ten thousand feet indicated altitude and stayed well clear of controlled airspace, airports and the like. Regional center doesn't have a problem with us as long as we stick to those rules.”

You nod. “No problem, Colonel.” You respond, raising your voice to be heard over the thundering double wasp up in the nose of the bird.

The bird's takeoff run is shorter than you're used to, and you almost forget about the torque for a second, wondering why the damn thing wants to roll before instinct kicks in and you counter it. Rosalie's out there somewhere, and she's in on the Colonel's frequency, you could go join her, but you could also go check up on Goose and the colonel's grandson, they're somewhere out on the property as well, and you know how kids can be....

[] Let's join up on Rosalie and just tool around a while. The colonel wouldn't appreciate it if I spooked a horse and one of those two got hurt.

Truth of it is, even as little as you talk to her, you trust Goose. Something about her tells you she's one of those country girls- not like Mav, where part of it's a put-on and the other part is compensation. You laugh. She's your friend, but damn if she's not a screwball.

You flick your radio over to the local airborne frequency- usually empty unless there's an air race or show going on nearby.

“Hey Rosalie, want some company?” You ask, noting that the engine, so loud in the hangar, has since faded into a background drone. Funny how that works.

Her laughter comes back over the radio to you, her voice full of mirth. “I think, Frank, that I already have some. Look out your right wing.”

Looking out over the inverted gull wing, you see Rosalie smiling and laughing. She waves.

“It is a fine day for a flight, non?” She asks, her accent coming through there at the end. “Ah, if only Jean-luc were here to see it.”

[] Jean-luc?

“Jean-luc?” You ask, starting a broad, gentle turn to the east.

Rosalie stays glued to your wing, nodding. “My... ah. Fiancee? He's a captain in the 3e Escadron of the 12e Regiment de Curiassiers. Tanks.”

“Ah, hey!” you exclaim. “My brother's a tank captain. With... oh hell. 11th Armored cavalry? At least, last I heard from him, that's where he was. That was a while ago though.”

She laughs again. “It is funny,” she says. “I can't see the allure of it, myself. Tanks are too much of a target. They call themselves kings of the battlefield, but for us, they're just prey.”

You chuckle. “And I suppose you remind him of that every so often?”

She nods. “And he reminds me that if his machine breaks, he can always walk. I cannot fly.” She smiles. “But I have a parachute, so he is still wrong.”

You laugh at that, shaking your head.

1/2
>>
“How's he doing?” You ask, picking out a tiny dust cloud down below- and two waving forms. You waggle your wings in return.

“He's fine- his regiment is part of the strategic reserve for now. He won't tell me about action on the front, but I think it's more severe than they're telling us. They're quartered in and around Brandenburg for now, but would they be that far back if things weren't dire?”

You shrug. “I don't honestly know, Rosalie. Land warfare isn't my thing.”

She sighs. “Well, regardless. He is ok, and I am thankful for that, at least.”

You nod. “Small favors, huh?”

“Oui. Small favors.” She says.

“Mr. Bishop, Miss Kent, I'm terribly sorry to interrupt, but you might want to head back.” The colonel calls over the ranch frequency. “There's a series of severe storms brewing up, I'd hate for you to get caught out in them. My son's got the truck, he's going to pick up young miss Bradshaw and my Grandson.”

Normally, weather wouldn't phase you too much. A storm? So what. But you're also normally in the Wyvern, which can just power straight through them. An old warbird like this just doesn't have that kind of thrust, let alone the aerodynamics or instruments to handle it.

Looking off to the south, over your right wing and out past Rosalie, you can see the ugly black cliff of a massive line of thunderheads oncoming- and practically track their vertical growth with your naked eye. Beneath them, the rain wall looks like a curtain of gray, and the whole deal is shot through with lightning.

“Mon dieu....” Rosalie breathes.

“You said it, Rosalie.” You agree.

[x] Pour it on, try to hit the hangars before this thing breaks over you!

While you can't risk handling the old Corsair like your beloved Wyvern, you also know she's got a better chance of surviving this mess tucked away safe in a hangar than up here.

You also happen to know that, at one point, she was the fastest propeller driven fighter in service.

She turns beautifully, and you slowly advance the throttle forward to the stop. You're honestly not sure if this bird has war emergency power or not- you haven't been able to find in indicator, but then again, there might not be one, or it might be a case where it was retrofit on sometime in the bird's forgotten past.

Rosalie tucks in behind you as your IAS increases, and you start a shallow dive, trying to squeeze just a little more speed out of the aircraft. Down this low, even in a fighter doing roughly a third of your Wyvern's top speed, it feels like you're positively rocketing across the landscape.

And, from your ten, the storm is rapidly approaching, the leading edge of it's wind only just barely noticeable along the ground in the ripples across the grass.

The wind is really starting to pick up as you break over the airfield, noting the relative calmness around the place. Most of the buildings are already closed up, and the small tower at the field is already dark- you two are the only ones up, no need to have the tower manned.

“Frank, you go first. If this wind picks up, you'll have more trouble landing in that fighter than I will.” Rosalie says from behind you.

[] “Like hell it will. This storm's gonna buffet you all over the place. Land first, Rosalie.”

[x] “Like hell it will. This storm's gonna buffet you all over the place. Land first, Rosalie.”

“Like hell it will, Rosalie. I'm a lot bigger, heavier, and have a much more powerful engine. Plus, come on, this is a US war era fighter. It's the closest thing to a flying bank vault as has ever been made. You'll clear the runway faster, and I'll be right behind you. Besides,” you say, pausing. “Ladies first.”

“But-” you cut her protest off.

“Besides. You've just admitted you're getting married. That means they'll kill you off to get tears from the viewers or illustrate how great I am. You first.” You insist, circling back around and casting a wary eye on the incoming clouds.

“I- Oui. See you on the ground, Frank.” She says, breaking off and lining up on the runway.

She clears the runway relatively quickly- She's outside the hangar doors as you line up on your own approach.

You're sweating bullets as you line up- the wind, despite your insistence to the contrary, is buffeting your fighter, hard. You're having to ride the throttle with one hand, while keeping a white-knuckle grip on the stick with your other.

1/2
>>
You're pretty confident you've got it in the bag when a sudden downburst slams into you, costing you a good hundred feet of altitude. You're way too low- and way too fast- to do anything but chop the throttle and haul back on the stick, hoping to not bend the colonel's bird too bad. The tires contact the wet pavement with a loud thud, but everything seems to hold together- flying bank vault, indeed. You taxi to a halt and cut the engine at the colonel's signal, leaning back in the seat and exhaling hard.

You exit the plane as the colonel does a walk around, examining it for damage. He shakes his head as you step down.

“I don't know how you did it, mister Bishop, but there's nothing we cant fix without some wax and a buffer. I'm in your debt, sir. This would have been a hard plane to replace.” He chuckles. “We thought for sure, when you took that tumble, the plane was a write off.”

The unspoken element is that you, too, probably would have been.

“I don't know how you did it, but I thank you.” He says again, shaking his head. “Well, let’s go to the house. I suspect you two would like to clean up a bit before supper, and I doubt there's much more flying to be done today.”

[x] Supper sounds good, Colonel. And yeah, I could probably use a shower.

You laugh, noting that there's nothing quite like stress sweat to ruin someone's day.

“Supper sounds good, Colonel. And I know I could use a shower.” You say, following him to the ranch truck parked in the hangar.

You open the door for Rosalie who climbs in, sitting on the center of the bench seat. The drive is a short one, and you step into the house to be greeted by the colonel's daughter. She hugs the old man, and returns your handshake.

“Your little witch is upstairs in the shower.” She says, laughing. “Some of my old clothes just fit her, but she's a bit smaller than I was at that age.”

You return the laugh. “She'll be fine, she's a good kid. And here, let me introduce you real fast. Caroline, this is Lieutenant de vaisseau Rosalie Kent. She's from the French Navy, on loan with us. Rosalie, this is Doctor Caroline Lee, a good friend of mine. How you doing, Caroline?”

She shrugs, then pokes the colonel in the kidney with a wooden spoon before he can snipe a dinner roll from the basket on the counter. “Can't complain. Dad needs to watch his salt intake, maybe cut back on the sugar,-”

“A scurrilous lie.” The colonel says, interrupting. “I'm perfectly healthy.”

-but other than that, I'm good.” She finishes. “How about you, Frank?”

Caroline and you are friends, if not close ones. She'd moved back in with him after her mother- the colonel's wife- died a few years back.

>>
“Not bad,” You admit. “Tooling around the states isn't too hard, but most of us feel kind of lost right now.”

Caroline shrugs. “Can't say I know the feeling, but I'll take your word for it. Anyway, I'll go lay out some clothes for you, Miss Kent, and you can just use what fits. You look like you're a little bit smaller than I am, so it might all be long, is that ok?”

Rosalie nods. “Merci.” She says.

Caroline smiles and waves that off. “No problem, I have too many clothes anyway. Frank, There's an old flight suit in your size, but that's about all I'm afraid. Dinner won't be ready yet for another hour or so, so you should have plenty of time.”

The shower is good, and you don't think you'll ever get tired of hot water. The old flight suit part, though, is no joke- it's an ancient OD green one, left here god only knows when. Still, it's clean and freshly laundered, so it's hard to complain, even if it isn't exactly what you'd call casual wear.

Dinner's still about twenty minutes off, and the girls are all sitting in the sun room, watching the storm roll through. The leading edge gone, it's still powerful, lashing the area with rain and lightning, but the wind is mostly died down- while it's gusty, it's not really threatening.

The colonel, meanwhile, is probably up in his office. One of the house's bedrooms, it's long since been converted. While he has painfully little modern equipment in there, preferring to use the 'time honored' methods of a pen and paper, he's always shown a remarkable ability to chat while working- and there's plenty of excellent books up there too.

[x] Might as well talk to the girls and watch the storm.

You wander into the sun room- not really living up to it's name, at the moment- and sit down, accepting the glass of sweet tea from Caroline.

“Hi Frank.” Goose greets- unconsciously mimicking Merlin's usual greeting- without the hug or genuine joy at seeing you. Not that that wouldn't be a little weird.

“Hi Goose. So what were we talking about? Boys? Painting our nails? Braiding our hair?” You respond with a smile.

Rosalie scoffs. “I think, Frank,” She says, “That braiding a crew cut would be rather difficult, non?”

Caroline laughs. “And Rosalie has a boy, Nicole says she's too young, and I can't find one worth a damn, and no, you don't qualify!”

You laugh at that- Whatever Caroline's standards are, they must be high, she's never been involved with anyone that you know of.

>>
>>25786600
Nope. Still very relaxing for me. Best sleep I ever get alone.
>>
“So how was your ride, Goose?” You ask, taking a sip of the tea.

“It was nice, other than when we saw the storm coming in. Brad though he'd teach me how to shoot-” you chuckle at that, and she continues “- but he didn't do so bad. Makes me miss home, though.”

“Oui. I know that feeling.” Rosalie agrees, nodding. “You are all my friends, even Katya, but there is nothing quite like home. I miss my family, and I miss Jean-luc.”

“Do you worry about him?” Caroline asks, then covers her mouth. “I'm sorry, that was rude. Please, don't answer if you don't want to.”

Rosalie waves it off. “My grandmother would have maybe taken offense, I do not. I worry about him, but what can I do? He would never forgive me if I had him assigned to a noncombat post, away from his troops.” She sighs, sadly. “Men never remember how easily they are killed in war, and never think about it until it's too late.”

“Like Frank?” Goose asks, innocently. “Mav says he drives Ice and Katya up the walls because he....” She pauses and looks at you. “Oh. Uh, sorry Frank.”

[] Laugh it off. “No harm, no foul. Why do I Drive them crazy?”
[] “No worries, Goose. But I know my limits, too.”

This one won the coin toss. Frank does know his limits, but it would be good to find out what Ice and Katya think about us.

>>

Yeah, Frank does need to let them know that their worry is mutual. Also, that he's well-aware of his limits, and isn't going to try anything stupid.

Much as the other may seem to fit how we've developed Frank's personality, we really need to get an idea of what they're thinking. Honestly, we don't really know how well Katya and Ice have been since the Tanana incident and Ice quest.

[x] Laugh it off. “No harm, no foul. Why do I Drive them crazy?”

You laugh it off, shaking your head. “No harm, no foul. Why do I drive them crazy?”

Goose looks at you for a second, then blushes slightly when she realizes that Rosalie and Caroline are both watching her too.

“Well, uh... well, Patty says it's because they both like you, and Ice is worried that she's some sort of curse and all the men that are important to her die in combat, like her dad. Katya's worried because she says heroes like you never get happy endings.” She pauses after that, then plows on. “But she says they're both wrong, and Slider can stuff it since she always told Patty you were crazy anyway, so she doesn't get to worry, even if she likes you or not.”

“Well, Frank,” Caroline says with a light laugh. “Sounds like Drama in the Navy is just as much fun as when your mom was in.”

“Yeah, tell me about it,” You grumble. “Any advice?”

Caroline laughs, and Rosalie just shakes her head. “For dealing with hormonal teenagers, maybe. For dealing with hormonal teenagers that see combat on a semi regular basis? You're on your own, my friend. Anyway, dinner is ready. Let me go get dad and my worthless brother, and Brad. I cooked some extra over what I thought we'd need, I remember how you eat.”

As it turns out, she was right to do so. The food, and the company are good, and you end up spending the night at the ranch, with the witches taking up the Colonel's room while he sleeps downstairs on the couch. You manage to find a comfortable spot on a packed away blanket in the sun room, listening to the rumble of thunder and the gentle sound of rain long into the night.
