Dinner after that was a much more enjoyable affair. The family, while still not entirely friendly, had warmed up to me somewhat, Marcus especially. He was always staring at me, either seemingly fascinated by my reptilian form, or pestering me for more stories. I was about to oblige him when his mother hushed him, saying that it was not polite to pester someone when they were eating. The stew was nice enough in its own right, but it had been so long since I had had a proper hot meal that I asked for a full second helping. Martha acted aghast at how much I could eat, though I think she was secretly flattered that I liked her cooking.

After dinner Martha takes Sam off to bed, and Rebecca does the same for Marcus, who protests every inch of the way. Michael walks off to see to his father’s room, leaving me alone in the dining room. The embers in the fireplace are still flickering, so I retrieve my book from my backpack and slither over, settling down beside the warm embers with a contented sigh. I bask in the heat radiating from the fireplace, and open my book, turning to the first page of a new story. On the first page is a picture of a giant of a man in a tribal mask, crouched in a fighting stance, massive hands outstretched.

I get a few pages in when I hear footsteps behind me. I lower the book and turn, seeing Marcus.

“Well hello there.” I say, “Does your mother know you’re up?”

“No.” He says, “But I can’t sleep, I’m too excited.”

“Hmmmm.” I groan, resting my chin on a hand. “And why did you come out here?”

“Well.” He says shyly, kicking his foot, “Maybe a story could help me fall asleep.”

I consider it, but any argument I might have vanishes like smoke in the wind when I see his pleading face.

“Okay, just one story.”

Marcus is overjoyed.

Let the story continue.

Reading. I'm enjoying this.
>>
>>25661148

It starts off innocently enough. Me curled up by the fire reading in a calm, even voice. Marcus lays propped on pillows beside me, carried away to lands far afield by the flickering firelight and my voice. After a while though, things start to get a bit more involved. My voice rises at the more exciting parts, slipping into the accents and voices of the various characters, sometimes illustrating with a sweep of my arms. I don’t remember at exactly when I rose from beside the fire to start acting out the scenes as I read them, but Marcus’ huge smile and laughter certainly doesn’t make me regret it. It is an exciting story, perfect for a young audience, the masked warrior and his party of heroes battling dragons and evil wizards, wandering far and wide.

Finally the hero was facing down a truly powerful evildoer, and I could no longer contain myself, fully slipping into the story.

“The hero walked alone into the darkness of the villain’s lair.” I said, making as if to peer through steeped shadows. “All about him was the musk of the tomb, and in the distance he could hear a wheezing breath echoing from the stone walls.”

Marcus was clutching a pillow in front of his chest, looking up at me with terrified, excited eyes.

“The torches flicker, and the hero feels a presence, it is one of evil and darkness, drawing near. He readies himself for a fight.” I drop low into a fighting stance, hands outstretched.

“’Who dares?’ Comes a voice from the shadows, and the hero turns to face it. ‘I dare’ says the hero, ‘look upon my mask and beware, for I am here to meet justice upon you!”

I launch myself forward, as if wrestling with an invisible enemy.

“’It is I, Los Tiburon, The Shark of the Land!”

The fight scene continued for a minute or two, Los Tiburon and his foe wrestling and battling upon the floor of the family room Marcus jumping up and down excitedly. For a moment it seems that the villain has triumphed, throwing back my arms and head and laughing, “I have won!” I declare, “Who can best me now?”

“I can!” Marcus says as he leaps forward and crashes into me. Nowhere in the story did it say that the reader was to be tackled by an excited ten year old, but I can work with this.

“You cannot hope to defeat me!” I hiss menacingly, as Marcus grabs hold of my arm and pulls with all his childish might, trying to topple me. After a moments ‘struggle’ I am overcome and topple forwards onto the mound of cushions, Marcus leaping after me. He wrestles on my back for a minute, jumping about with much more enthusiasm than ability, bashing me over the head with a pillow repeatedly. During this time I hiss and spit and act defiant, finally relenting when he takes my proffered hand and twists it into a mock arm lock.

“ACK!” I say, waving my other arm angrily, “You have bested me!” I start tapping the floor next to me, “I give I give, please show mercy!”

Marcus releases my arm and jumps up and down on the pillows, proclaiming his victory. Then he goes quiet and dives for cover behind the pillows. I look at him curiously, then notice the smell of another at the doorway. I flop onto my back, looking up to see Rebecca in the upside down doorway.

“I assure you this is not what it looks like.”

“It isn’t?” She says, clearly unconvinced. “You mean Marcus isn’t up past his bedtime and you weren’t just making enough racket to wake half the street?”

“Okay,” I say, “this is exactly what it looks like.” The female glares at me unsympathetically. “But come on, it’s the night before his birthday, I think he can stay up a little later just this once.”

Marcus scoots over next to me and we both look up at her with wide pleading eyes. After a moment her gaze softens and she adopts a tired smile.

“Maybe just this once, but now I think it is far past time for you to go to bed, you have a big day tomorrow.”

Marcus, glad for the reprieve, rushes off to bed, Rebecca looking after him making a disapproving noise. I rise up and slither over, leaning against the wall.

“I’m sorry if I caused any trouble.” I say, “He said he couldn’t sleep and wanted to hear a bedtime story. I was hoping to get him relaxed so he could drift off to sleep but things got a bit out of control.” I grin, a bit embarrassed, I really had intended to try and wind him down, not send him running around the room in a fit of excitement.

Rebecca looks at me curiously. “You are a very strange person.” She says, “You meet my grandfather on the road and just decided to walk with him? I could understand if you were coming this way, but nobody goes that far out of their way for nothing, especially not a…” She lets the sentence drag off.

“A what?” I ask. “Traveler, wanderer, teller of stories?”

“A, a,” She struggles with the word, “a serpent.” She finally spits out.

I blink, suddenly understanding.

“Oh, I see. It is true, my people are not known very well for being wanderers or explorers, we usually are not prone to wanderlust like humans seem to be. As for me, I was cast from my home and now wish to see the world that was always out of reach.”

“Nonsense.” Rebecca says, “There must be more to it than that, to just wander the roadside is dangerous and difficult, you couldn’t make it far without getting money from somewhere, so what’s your angle? Looting, stealing, how can I trust you in this house?”

That gets me thinking, the financial necessities of my journey had simply not occurred to me. I had some money in my purse from the bandit hold, though that would not last for very long. My food was enough to sustain me for a while, though I would run out eventually. I took offense to being called an untrustworthy thief though.

“Well, I did pinch a few apples or some flowers from a vendor back in my childhood, but I am no true thief or cutpurse. Your grandfather is a friend to me, and your father has given me a roof over my head for the night, so I would not dare to steal from your house. As for money, I require only enough to fill my belly each day, hearty health and the open road are all I really need.”

“That can’t be true, you must want something more than that.” The says, still unconvinced.

I think for a moment, thinking of how to properly convey what I am thinking. Finding the right words, I give her a slow friendly grin.

“Just try to imagine it.” I say in a low voice, “You walk alone along a twisting mountain path, the wind whistling in your ears. For the past two weeks you have traveled alone, with only a tattered old map and your own wit to guide you. After a long treacherous climb you finally reach your destination, and behold you destination.”

Rebecca looks at me dubiously but I press on.

“Before you rises a crumbling ruin, once a great castle on the mountain’s peak, now torn with the neglect of the ages. Tattered banners flap in the mountain wind like wraiths and you see gate left open, the great door beyond it hanging open.”

I can see my words having some effect on her, and I slither a bit closer, holding eye contact.

“The darkened passage into the ancient keep beckons to you, at once exciting and terrifying, and all you need to do is reach out your hand and seize the moment.”

I reach out my hand to her, grinning.
>>
>>25662488

She hesitates, looks down at my hand, back up to me, and then reaches out. The moment her fingers touch mine I grab her and whirl her around like a dancer, her letting out a little squeak.

“You take your chance.” I say, holding her from behind, slowly pushing her forward. “Your long journey will not be for naught, and you press forward into the heart of the ruin. You hear the cold wind howling in the cracks of the keep, and draw your sword.” Here I slip a walking stick into her hands, which she holds reflexively in front of her.

“You press on through the shattered halls, deeper and deeper into the ruin, descending the stairwell to the ancient dungeon.” We walk out of the family room and into the dark kitchen, me blowing out candles as we go.

“You find yourself submerged in darkness, only the feeble light of your torch to illuminate your path, your breath shuddering in your lungs as you listen for the faintest sound of movement. Suddenly, you hear something, a scrabbling on the stone.”

I let her go and slither back into the shadows, leaving her turning about, reflexively holding her ‘sword’ before her. I circle around her and whisper softly.

“You hear it again, coming closer, clawed feet upon the stone. You are afraid, but must press on, your task is great and the need dire. Suddenly, you hear it. Very close now, its footsteps echoing from the walls, then you realize, it’s right behind you!”

Rebecca whirls around and swings with her stick, which I catch easily in my hand. We stand there for a bit, her quick panting breaths slowly slowing, me grinning ear to ear.

“Do you understand now?” I ask.

She nods, her breath returning to normal. “I think I do.”

We stand there in the dark for a moment more, her getting suddenly embarrassed at still holding onto a walking stick like a sword and lets it go. I slither over to the door and put it down. Turning, I see that Rebecca has followed me.

“Was there something else?” I ask.

“Oh, um.” She leans awkwardly on one foot, “nothing, I was just going to bed actually.” She says, turning to go.

“Excellent idea.” I say slithering after her. “A bed sounds really good right now.”

Rebecca slows to a stop and turns in the hall, looking at me with an odd expression.

“Don’t you think it’s a little soon?”

“No, I think it’s just about the right time.” I say, looking out the window at the dark street, “You’re going now so I might as well go too. No point in waiting up and being tired before I get there, I usually like to amuse myself for a bit before actually settling in.”

She grins a very strange grin, apprehensive but curious.

“What about my father?” She says looking up the staircase.

“He already gave me his permission.” I say, a little confused. “He invited me in and let me stay for the night so that at least counts where I’m from.”

She scratches her neck nervously. “Maybe things are different in your homeland. I really don’t know if this is such a good idea.”

“Of course it’s a good idea.” I say, wondering what she’s on about, “We have a big day tomorrow and it would be a shame to face it without a good night before, rest is important after all.” I smile as charmingly as I can, she seems anxious about something so I want to relax her if I can, humans certainly can be odd.

“Well,” She stammers, “Maybe, then…” She seems to be arguing with herself. “Okay.” She finally says in a surprised voice, as though she is shocked somehow to say it.

“Great!” I say, “Where’s the guest room?”
>>
>>25663069

She turns again and looks at me, confused. “Guest room?”

“Yes.” I say as plainly as I can, “The guest room, I am tired and wish to sleep.”

She blinks at me in confusion for a solid thirty seconds, before breaking out of it. “Right!” She says with far too much enthusiasm, “Just around the corner there and down the hall, can’t miss it.”

I slither off down the corridor, waving over my shoulder. “Thanks, see you in the morning, sleep well.”

I settle into bed and go to sleep easily enough, I had planned on reading but wrestling with Marcus has quite tired me out. It has been entirely too long since I slept in a real bed, so by the time I groggily wake and drag myself u it is midmorning, the sun already streaming in through the windows. I can faintly hear the sounds of talking coming from outside the room, and smell something cooking. I get up, stretch, and slither out into the kitchen to see what’s up.

I come in to see the family standing around chatting, all except little Sam who is likely still asleep. Most of the family is sitting at the table drinking tea, which smells rather nice, Martha in the kitchen putting the finishing touches on what seems to be a platter of bread and cheese.

“Good morning Martha.” I say slithering in through the door.

“Oh, good morning.” She says, reaching for the large platter. I beat her to it though, and carry it out to the table, “Please allow me.” I say over my shoulder. Martha looks a little annoyed, but relieved and settles down with some tea. I sniff the air, the tea does smell quite good.

“Oh, where are our manners.” Martha says, “Rebecca, please pass him some tea.”

Rebecca passes me a mug, giving me a shy grin, which I return fully. I hold her gaze for a moment, she looks like she is about to say something.

“Did you sleep well Solaron?” Menthus asks.

“Quite well,” I say, “It has been too long since I was able to drop into a real bed, what about you Rebecca?” I ask, trying to break the ice.

She gives that weird grin again, then drops it. “Actually I think I hear Sam crying.” She says before dashing off.
>>
>>25663222
Well, this is only the second(?) time we've seen him use it in such a manner so far. His adventures have barely even begun at this point.
Although now I'm wondering what kind of reputation Sol will develop as he continues to roam the countryside.
>>
>>25663405

The rest of the morning passes pleasantly enough, Rebecca returning a little later with Sam on her hip. I get up and leave the family to their celebration, skirting around the outside of the conversation and watching from a distance. Michael is, of course, ecstatic about his birthday, a whole day free of chores and busy work, and then a special dinner at the end, what child wouldn’t be bouncing through the roof at the prospect of a day like that?

I spend much of the morning helping Martha put up a few decorations while Marcus runs off to play with his friends, I could hear him bragging about wrestling down the snake man even before he left the house. With the preparations more or less done, I am somewhat at a loss with what to do for the rest of the day. Then it of course occurs to me. It would be rude to attend a birthday celebration without bringing a gift for the guest of honor, so I don my coat and strap on my belt and head out, bidding Martha goodbye as I head out into the street.

It’s before noon, so with this being a farming village and all the people are still mostly working in their fields, but there are still a goodly number of people about. They seem quite shy though so they always shy away whenever I pass by, though I wave in as friendly a manner as I can. I pass a town guard on my way to the market.

“Morning constable.” I say, nodding.

“Good morning.” He replies, before doing a double take.

Anything else he might have said is lost as I walk into the market at the center of town.
>>
>>25663614

There’s not much in the way of specialty shops in this town, mostly produce stalls and stores for eminently practical things. I do however see one stall which boasts a few pieces of jewelry and sculptures, as well as a few pieces of carved wood. I slither over to the surprised merchant and start to browse his selection. After a moment he seems to work up the nerve to talk to me.

“Hello, um, sir. May I interest you in anything?”

“I hope so.” I say, examining a dragon pendant. “I am looking for something to get a young male for his birthday, perhaps you have something that would suit an adventurous lad?”

“Yes I believe I do.” Says the merchant, evidently excited at the prospect of making a sale. He reaches under the table and pulls out a carved wooden sword. It is of fairly nice craftsmanship, and I think Marcus would quite like it.

“Wonderful, how much?”

We haggle over the price for a few minutes, me giving him all the charm I’m worth. In the end I barter down to a reasonable price and pay the merchant, who hands over the wooden sword. I tuck it into my belt beside my saber and decide to go and enjoy the creek I saw a little way from town, I have a few hours to kill after all.
>>
So is Solaron ever going to actually give someone the D? I'm completely cool with him being forever oblivious of his own seductive charm but someone's eventually going to catch his fancy.
>>
>>25663920

I don't really know, right now he's oblivious and naive, but we'll just see how the story unfolds.

What, you didn't think I planned this out or anything did you?
>>
>>25663948
just a suggestion but what if he gave the boy a mask too like Los Tiburon's.....or even a special "champion's belt"
>>
>>25663948
Oh no. Was just asking the question. Personally, I'm curious to how that would work out. The obvious, comedic answer would be that his charm is only good when he ISN'T actively trying to seduce but that seems a little mean-spirited to such a nice guy like Sol. That kind of irony is more for a womanizer trying to woo his true love.
>>
>>25663920
Perhaps one day a girl will catch his eye in that way, or the girl will tell him in no uncertain terms that she likes him and that she wants to fuck.
>>
>>25663815

I spend most of the afternoon lazing about on the shores of the creek which runs near the town, just enjoying the warm air and dazzling sun. After a bit I pull out a quill and a few pieces of paper and start to write, working on the second gift I can give Marcus. Eventually the sun starts to dip lower in the sky and I decide to head back, it would be a shame to miss the party after I had already gotten a gift! I slither on back through the town, the villagers still shying away from me, though some of them wave back when I greet them. With the sun starting to dip lower in the sky, I at last head back into Michael’s home.

The place is filled with festive cheer now, a few decorations out and the smell of what I barely dare to hope is cake wafting from the kitchen. Marcus and a few of his friends are tearing around the house like mad, and only pause for a moment to gawp at me when I come in. After a moment they scurry off on their own childish business and leave me to hang my things in the closet, along with concealing my gifts for later.

Eventually Martha calms the children down, practically having to drag them over to the table, where after a moment she places out a large glazed confection, the kind of which I have not seen in entirely too long. A song is sung, though I refrain from joining in as I do not know the lyrics. Finally the cake is cut, Marcus looking like he has never been so happy as he is now.

Eventually, it comes time for the gifts to be brought out.

Oh yeah, another piece of CC that I forgot to add last night; it personally irks me a bit that Sol refers to himself as "walking", "running", etc.

I figured he'd slither.
>>
>>25664495

Did I say that?

Damn, I really mean to say slithering, and I usually do. If at any point I say he's walking then that is a slip up not an intentional act.
>>
>>25664534
Consider it just a language thing on Sol's part from when he learned English/Common. A word specifically for bipedal locomotion and another for faster bipedal locomotion being used very commonly is probably not something he'd really understand and just assumes they're a catch all-term to mean a person moving forward instead.

Marcus sits at the table as his family and friends bring out the gifts for the guest of honor. Martha hands him a bag of homemade candied nuts, which he is asked not to devour until after the presents are all presented. Michael gives his son a small woods knife, a sturdy little blade with a handle he can grow into. Rebecca offers her brother a hand carved wooden statue of a dog, she probably made it herself. Marcus is smiling at the table and laughing with his friends when I slither over, holding my hands behind my back.

“I thought it would be rude to spend the night and not even have a gift for the guest of honor, so I got you these.” I say as I hand him the bundle. He takes the wooden sword, tied to it by a piece of string is a handwritten copy of the story of Los Tiburon.

“I know you liked that story, so here’s your own copy. Just promise me you’ll be careful with that sword, I think your mother has enough to worry about as it is.”

“Yes I promise thank you thank you thank you!”

His mother smiles and tells him to run along with his friends, Michael waves the sword over his head and rushes off with his friends, out the door and into the street, the sound of laughing children fading into the distance.

The room is filled with tired smiles, the adults looking quite tired out by the energy of the young guests. I help Michael and his family take down the decorations and clean up the table, and by the time we are done night is about to fall again.

I look out a window into the distant darkening hills, wondering about my next move, when I hear footsteps behind me, and the tapping of a cane on the hardwood floor. I turn to see Menthus coming into the room.

Solaron for nicest snake monster you're likely to meet on a lonely road out in the wilderness.
>>
This is the first time in a long time I've seen a genuinely enjoyable story on /tg/.
>>
>>25664616

“Menthus,” I say, “how are you enjoying your visit?”

“Oh I enjoy it very much,” He says, a smile upon his face, “It has been far too long since I have heard my family laughing about the table together.” He walks over to join me, leaning against the wall. “That was a very kind thing you did.” Menthus says in a quieter voice. “Marcus has a heart of adventure, not unlike your own. He has always been fascinated by tales of heroes and villains. You have a good heart Solaron, of that there is no doubt.”

He sighs deeply. “I only hope that others will be able to look past your appearance and truly get to know you.”

I turn to him, curious. “What do you mean, my appearance?”

“I mean that Yuan Ti do not have the best reputation.” Menthus says. “Most people of the world think of you and your kind as a dangerous vile lot, and they have good reason to think so. The snake men of the south are responsible for great tragedies, the fall of kingdoms plagues and famines. It also does not help that most other reptilian races have earned rather dark names for themselves as well. Most people you meet on your travels will likely not react well to you.”

Oh, I think, actually that explains a lot of things. I sag against the window ledge with the realization, this explains the way people have been reacting to me, they weren’t shy or nervous they were afraid of me. What a sad situation, I thought, how was I going to go on now?
>>
>>25664853

“Oh cheer up.” Menthus says, “I can hear how sad you are. If there is one thing that being blind will teach you it is that what you see is often deceiving. Others look at you and see a dangerous monster, a creature come to destroy them that they must fight against. But none of that changes who you are, a kind caring soul who always looks out for others. I challenge any of your detractors to close their eyes and listen to you speak, then try to convince others of your evil.”

I smile at that, placing a hand on his arm.

“Thank you Menthus, that is very good to hear.” Then I realize something. “Menthus, how did you know I was a Yuan Ti, did Michael tell you?”

Menthus laughs. “No, I knew from the moment I met you, I have yet to meet a human who slithers like a snake.”

Even I have to laugh at that.

“I see your gaze is far afield Solaron. Just what are you thinking?”

I gaze out the window again, making up my mind.

“I am thinking that I have greatly enjoyed our time together my friend, and your family has been most hospitable and kind to me, but that it is time for me to depart.”

“So soon?” Menthus asks, not entirely surprised.

“Yes, my strength is returned and I shall set out with the dawn.” I gaze out over the fields. “I want to see what’s on the other side of those hills.”

“Then I shall leave you to your rest.” Menthus says, “I shall speak with you in the morning to see you off.”

“Good night Menthus.” I say, smiling out the window at the far off misty hills.

After a solid nights rest I rise early in the morning. I slither down to the entry hall and begin to see to my things, checking over my pack. I see that someone has taken the liberty of restocking my preserved food, for which I am thankful, my supplies are short enough as they are. I hear footsteps behind me and turn, expecting to see Menthus, but am surprised to find that Rebecca has risen early and come to see me off.

“Rebecca, I had hoped to see you before I left, it would have been a shame to have gone without saying goodbye.”

“Yes,” She says, “a shame indeed. I know that I was not the easiest on you when we met, I was worried for my brother, but I was wrong about you. It was very nice to have you stay with us Solaron.”

I bow low with a sweep of my arm. “It was a pleasure to have met you milady.”

I smile to myself, but glance up when I feel something warm and wet on my forehead. Leaning back from the kiss, Rebecca smiles. “Fair travels Solaron, I hope you find the adventure you see.”

“And to you, milady.” I say, trying to maintain a little composure.

Pretty sure other people got it as well, it's just that most people seem to think that blind = retarded.

Also this would be an amazing book. You write at a decent clip and your plotwriting skills have been solid thus far. You need to find yourself an editor once you've amassed a pile of paper and try to get this published. Might not be able to use Yuan-ti because loltrademark, but can be converted to some other generic snakeman race name.

Waiting for, at the end of these good feels, Sol gets run out of town and Menthus' family looks on in sadness. Except for the wife, because she organized the posse. It's how I'd write it.

And GO BUY ELEMENTS OF STYLE I'M SERIOUS IT'S AMAZING

A little while later the rest of the family drifts down from their rooms, Martha putting out breakfast, some more bread and a cheese. We eat together, a fairly quiet meal, before I say my last goodbyes, patting Marcus on the shoulder and wishing him best of luck when next he does battle. His parents look a bit confused but Rebecca and Marcus both smile. I thank Martha for her cooking and Michael for his hospitality. Finally I give Menthus one lase pat on the shoulder and head for the door. Waving a final fond farewell to the family who had given me shelter, I slither off down the road towards the edge of town.

Halfway out of town a pair of guards stop me.

“Ho there serpent, where are you off to this early in the morning?”

“Elsewhere,” I say, “fine town you have here constable but a bit small for me, I have places to go, things to see.”

The guards look to each other, “Well then, if you’re leaving then be quick about it, on your way, you’ve been lingering here long enough.”

I slither on past them, glancing back over my shoulder, past the guard to the home of Michael and his family. Yes, this place was a bit too small for me. I slither out onto the road and head off into the distance, towards wherever the road would lead.

God, this is the first time I've laughed in a week!
I am loving this tale, man, keep it up.

P.S: I'm not sure if I will get around to it, but what does Solaron look like beyond being a yuan-ti? Any clothing at all? Just wondering since I want to make some fan-art.

Of course, you could leave it all up to the fans!
>>
>>25666007

>fan art

My day has been made.

Of course you can imagine him however you want, but this is how I see him.

He has green scales, the same color as the guy in the OP image on the top of the page. He looks more or less like a standard Yuan Ti, though I always imagine him having a slightly flatter tail and little crocodile scale ridges on his back, suggesting some exotic ancestry a few generations back.

Build wise he is a little on the lean side, muscular and strong but not overly muscled, he fights fast and agile rather than hard, darting about lightning quick with his saber.

His typical traveling garb is basically a western duster coat, open at the front, with only a sword belt under it, and his backpack. Saber has a full solid hand guard, rather than a basket hilt with lots of gaps.

His book is bound to his belt and dangles by two pieces of chain.

Maybe post a sketch or something so I can see if you're on the right track? Not that I would ever have any right to complain about fan art, that would just be too cool.

The days and weeks that followed were a mixed bag of experiences. I spent many a night camped in the woods or fields by the roadside, and many long days slithering along roads and trails, over hills and dales and across little wooden bridges. As I went I sometimes passed other travelers upon the road, whom I greeted as cheerily as I could manage, to somewhat mixed results. Sometimes I would be met with a wave or a greeting, other times with fear and other times with a thrown object or two.

Towns were often no better. Sometimes the locals would tolerate my presence, as my coin was as good as any, other times I would be run straight out by the town guard the moment I entered the inn for the night. My preserved food was starting to run a bit low, which was starting to worry me. I still had enough left for a little while, but if the next towns ran me out like the last one then I would be unable to buy more. Off in the distance I hear the familiar sound of a rushing stream. Deciding to improve my food stocks in a different way, I head towards the sound of rushing water for a bit of fishing.
>>
>>25666230

It took me only a few minutes of weaving through the trees to reach the water’s edge, a fast running stream, should be big enough to find something worth eating after a little work. I strip off my gear and lay it against a tree, slithering into the water on my belly. I lie there, still in the cold water, I could be a log for how still I am laying. After a few minutes I spot a bit of movement ahead of my snout, and focus on it. A darting fish, fair sized swims through the water ahead of me. With a great splash and flash of fangs, I have myself a fish lunch.

After that I take to throwing the fish out of the water, and gather a few fair sized specimens before I sluggishly slither out of the water to bask in the sun. I build a little camp fire and cook the fish, tucking what I don’t eat away in my pack for later. Stores partially replenished, I head back out onto the open road.

>>
>>25666246

I slither along the road later that day, taking a swig of water from my water skin. I have not passed another soul for the past three days, and have not felt the need to break the long gentle silence of the vales and fields I have passed on my travels. It had been some time since I had seen any sign of civilization, and to be honest I was starting to get a little lonely. A little time to one’s self can do a body good, but it had been some weeks since I had spoken more than a single sentence to another living soul. The wind shifts, and I perk up my snout, scenting the air with a flickering tongue. There is the scent of human, coming from up the road and traveling closer. Perhaps yet again my loneliness will be abated by another traveler?

I see the traveler up ahead, a male human if I am not mistaken. And it is rather hard to tell, as he is clad in head to toe armor, his helmet in his hand as he walks, other hand resting upon the hilt of a large sword at his side. His armor shines in the light, even though it seems to have seen better days from what I can see, bearing dents and scratches, but obviously well cared for. Upon his chest is a fluttering tabard, bearing the icon of the face of an old man, centered in a golden sun burst.

I don’t think he sees me yet, which makes sense since I am wearing rather muted colors against the backdrop of the trees and fields. As he draws nearer he raises his hand to his eyes to try and see through the afternoon glare. I wave energetically to him, trying to draw his attention.

“Hello there!” I shout, “How goes it traveler?”
>>
>>25666650

The stranger walks closer, and the sun passes behind a cloud, letting him get a clearer view without the glare. He stops in his tracks, and stares for a moment. Oh great, it’s going to be another one of those conversations. The stranger puts on his helmet and begins trotting towards me. I get a nervous feeling and place my hand upon the hilt of my saber, ready to draw.

The figure breaks into a run, drawing a bastard sword and holding it over his head as he charges.

“Pelor guide my blade!” He shouts as I draw steel to match.
>>
>>25666663

He’s coming at me like a battering ram, and only a fool would try and stand strong against a bull rush like that, so I coil up and leap aside, leaving the warrior to slash at empty air. Landing in a crumple, I quickly rise in a fighting stance and slash at him before he can fully regain his balance, though he deflects the blow with a sudden parry. He lashes out at me once again, whistling blade inches from my chest as I dodge back, dropping low to slash at his feet, only for him to jump over my blade and bring his sword down in an overhead chop.

I roll sideways, slashing wildly with my sword as I go, curling up and leaping towards him saber swinging in a rapid attack pattern. We come together like thunderclouds, a whirling maelstrom of clashing blades and ringing steel. His movements are fast, but not quite as fast as mine, his heavy armor slowing him down, though what strikes I do get through simply glance off his armor. Meanwhile I must be careful to dodge him as fast as I can, even a glancing blow from that sword would likely cause great injury.

A sudden flurry of blows sends him back, and I drop back as well, each of us panting.

“Why?” I ask between labored breaths, “Why come for me?”

“It is my duty.” Pants my attacker, “As a paladin of Pelor it is my sworn oath to rid the land of vile monsters.”

“Then you are attacking the wrong person.” I say, trying to regain my stamina before he attacks again, “I am but a simple traveler.”

“Do not try to trick me.” He says, bringing his sword up again, “I will not be fooled by your lies.”

“A wise man warned me about people like you.” I say.

“You should have heeded him!” The paladin yells as he charges again.

This is the first thing I can remember that was specifically Yuan-ti, but I know there's been plenty focusing on personages of some form of scale. Lamias immediately come to mind, if monstergirls count, then there's various lizardfolk, dragonborn, kobold and of course dragon-related creations.
It has been a while since I looked over the archives and 1d4chan, though, and I wouldn't call myself the most knowledgeable about /tg/'s history prior to 2009/10.

This time I try and keep my distance, deflecting his blows and keeping him moving to chase me down. Our first bout wore heavily on my stamina, and I cannot continue to fight him straight on. Maybe if I can keep him moving then the heavy armor and large sword he is using will tire him out. If, after his thirteenth or so swing he is feeling any fatigue he does a masterful job of hiding it, as he does not seem to be slowing down at all.

Our blades clash together, the paladin coming at me like a battering ram, a solid force coming right at me without a moments reprieve. He pushes against my saber with his bastard sword, and while I am trying to push him off, drives an armored fist into my gut, knocking the wind from my lungs. Then he twists the sword and drives the pommel against my neck, knocking me back.

He flourishes his blade overhead and prepares a coup de grace, but I lash out with my tail and knock the blade away in his moment of distraction, stabbing at his heart with my saber. He reacts instantly, knocking the sword away with the flat of his armored hand. Rather than try and retrieve his weapon, he simply raises his hands up over his head, palms facing the open sky. A ray of sunlight pierces the clouds and falls upon him, armor shining.

“By the holy power of Pelor’s light I smite thee!” He shouts before bringing his hands down onto my chest.

I close my eyes on reflex, not particularly wishing my last sight to be this paladin ripping my chest open. His hands slam into my chest, and I quiver in dread anticipation. Nothing happens. In fact, I feel kind of good, a slow warmth suffusing me, seeping into my weary and battered body from the paladin’s hands. I open my eyes and look down, the warrior managing to seem somewhat confused through his armor, he lifts up his hands to the sun again and lays them on my chest again. This time I suppress a giggle, the warmth flowing into me tickling a little. I actually feel better than I have in a while now, like I had just had a hot meal and a good rest.

I look up to the paladin, who has drawn himself back to his feet and is looking from his hands, back to me, then to his hands again.

“Is something wrong?” I ask, so relieved to still be alive and pleasantly relaxed by the sudden feeling of warm security that the mortal danger I was in a moment ago seems unimportant now.

“Monsters usually burst into flame when I do this.” He says, so bewildered he has seemingly forgotten about the fight.

“Okay,” I say, pulling myself up, “we have obviously had a failure to communicate here. I may be many things but a monster is not one of them, just remember that looks can be deceiving.”

“Shut up.” He says, retrieving his sword, “A holy smite from Pelor should have killed you.”

I look over myself, checking for large obvious wounds. “Actually that felt really good.” I say, stretching as if I had just risen from an afternoon nap, “Could you do it again?”

“No!”

“So you’re not going to channel divine power to try and kill me again?” I ask, trying to clarify matters.

“No, I mean yes, I mean… Give me a moment.”

He starts to pace and think, when his back is turned I retrieve my saber and return it to its scabbard. After a few moments pacing the paladin makes up his mind and starts striding towards me again.

“The holy light of Pelor protects and comforts the good and righteous while bringing ruination and destruction to the vile and corrupt. Therefore the only reason His power would not crumble you to dust would be…”

He reaches out fast as lightning and grabs me, pulling me in close as he scrutinizes me. Beneath the helmet I can see a sudden glow, two points of light, the color of purest sunlight begin to shine. You know that feeling when you know someone who dislikes you is staring right at you with a burning hatred? This is like that, but more so. I feel tiny and helpless before the gaze, something vast and infinite taking the time to examine an interesting mote of dust before it turns its gaze elsewhere. After a few moments of that imperious glare, the light fades and the paladin lets me go, backing away in shock.

“That’s not possible.” He says, “You can’t be…”

“What?” I ask, dusting myself off from where he grabbed me.

“Good.” He says weakly.

I give him a rather annoyed glare.

“Of course I’m good.” I say hotly, “What did you think I was? Any fool should be able to see what I am.”

“Of course I see what you are.” He says angrily, “You are a Yuan Ti, one of the serpent folk. Your kind never brings anything but fear and misery wherever they walk, you are the downfall of entire kingdoms.”

“Well I don’t pretend to speak for the rest of my kind.” I say, “I can only speak for myself, and I the least that I can say is that I do not have a habit of attacking travelers on the roadside without cause or so much as a how-do-you-do. Can you say the same.”

“Silence serpent.”

The paladin thinks for a few moments, considering me from behind his helm.

“My divine sight has never failed me before, but there is a first time for all things.” He says, almost to himself. “I cannot kill you if there is a possibility you are truly good, but neither can I let you wander aimlessly if I am wrong. Therefore you shall accompany me until there is no doubt in my mind as to your intentions.”

Oh well, not as bad as I had thought. I could refuse but I really didn’t want to fight him again, and I could always slither away in his sleep.

“Okay.” I say, “Best I can hope for I guess.”

The paladin seems a bit taken aback by my sudden agreement but continues regardless.

“Your cooperation is appreciated, now hand over your weapons.”
>>
>>25683035

“No.” I say flatly, hand tightening on the sword my master had gifted me.

The paladin grips his sword hilt as well.

“I am in no mood for games serpent, I will judge you fairly but until I am sure I will not have a dagger at my back.”

“You won’t!” I exclaim, “Get this through your helmet, I am not going to attack you, you started this fight!”

He is unconvinced.

“Look,” I say, “I give you my solemn word of honor, I shall not attack you unfairly. Besides, if you took my blades away I could still bite you.”

“I could tie your mouth shut.” He says flatly.

“I could strangle you with my tail as you sleep.” I counter.

“I could tie you to a tree at night.” He responds.

“I could attack you right now.” I say, “But I won’t.” I spread my hands wide. “Anyone can act innocent and helpless unarmed, if you really want to see if I’m good or not you will have to trust me to keep my weapons.”

He considers for a long moment. “Very well, but you will remain where I can see you at all times serpent.”

“Thanks.” I say, “And my name is Solaron.”

The paladin grunts and motions for me to start slithering.

We travel in silence for a little while, the steady tromp of armored boots upon the ground behind me a constant reminder about my new traveling companion.

“So,” I ask cautiously after a few hours travel. “Where are we going?”

“I have no destination, I walk wherever the light of Pelor guides.”

“So you’re a wanderer?” I ask, perking up.

“Of a sort.” He replies, “But I do not simply wander aimlessly from place to place, it is my duty which drives me on.”

“Oh, what duty is that?”

“My duty to Pelor!” He says exasperatedly. “And to the people of this land. It is my task in life to wander the land and to seek out evil and corruption wherever it can be found, and to banish it with my blade and Pelor’s light.”

“Ah.” I say, starting to count on my fingers. Sacred oath, check. No place to call home, check. Battling evil wherever it can be found, check. A slow grin spreads over my face. “Are we on a quest?” I ask excitedly.

“No.” He says, “I am on a quest, you are my prisoner.”

“Well if you are on a quest, and I am going with you, then by definition we are on a quest!”

“No.” He says a touch agitated.

I smile to myself, I’m on a quest.

It turns out that being on a quest is really not that different from what I have been doing. We travel silently along the roadside for the rest of the day, passing no one in our travels. When night falls we pitch camp along the roadside, me finishing off my fish from earlier. After we eat and the darkness falls, the paladin confiscates my gear and makes good on his threat of tying me to a tree. I wait for him to fall asleep before slithering out of the ropes and grabbing my book, sticking my forked tongue out at him as I go.

My surly companion awakes to find me back in my ‘restraints’ all in order, and we set out again. The next day passes much like the last one, as does the one after that. More long hours of boring silent trudging under the sun, it must be exhausting under that armor. Our journey continues for four days before we start to find indications of another settlement ahead. As the day wears on we see another human town ahead, a fairly sizable one at this, with the dirt road replaced with a cobbled street.

Before us a stone wall rises about fifteen feet high, a wooden sign proclaiming this to be the town of Ardendale, a fairly sized trade depot by the looks of things. From above the wall the town watch look down upon us, the paladin waving up at them. It seems that he is known to these people as they come down and open a small door in the main gate to admit us entry.
>>
As we go inside the town, we are stopped by the captain of the watch at the gatehouse.

“Sloane, good to see you visiting our fair city again, what business brings you now?”

“The same business as always, the destruction of the evil. For the moment I wish to recover my strength and seek a new target in need of destruction.”

“Very well, and what is this… thing?”

Sloane turns to me. “An, anomaly, I am studying it further before I pass judgment.”

The watchman nods. “I shall trust your judgment paladin, just keep the serpent on a short leash.”

Sloane nods and we enter the city proper.

“Please tell me there isn’t actually a leash.” I say quietly.

“Only if you deserve it.” Sloane grumbles as we move through the crowd.

This is the largest human settlement I have seen thus far, though it is still a far cry from what I would call a city, certainly nowhere near as large as the city which I was raised in, but perhaps by human standards this is something to marvel at. It’s certainly filled with a surprising amount of hustle and bustle, everywhere the crowds are moving like rushing rivers, merchants are hawking their wares, families are busy about their shopping, everywhere is activity and energy.

I don’t have as much time to look as I would like, the paladin’s firm hand on my arm making sure I don’t get lost in the rushing crowds, but I try to soak as much of the city in as I can before each scene slides out of my vision. Eventually we reach a tavern, and go inside. It is a fairly decent establishment, mostly empty right now, save for a human female cleaning up the bar and a few patrons eating a late lunch.

“Well hello Sloane.” Says the female, looking up. “How are you doing? And who’s your friend?” She looks at me suspiciously.

“I am doing as well as can be expected.” The paladin says, “And this is Solaron. He has caught my interest and I am trying to find out more about him before I pass judgment. I shall require a room for a little while, and please pass along any pertinent information you can find, you know the kind I mean.”

The female nods and goes about her business. Sloane gestures for me to sit at one of the tables, and I sink onto my coils whilst he pulls up a chair.

“Now.” He says, “I think it is time we talked.”

“I was waiting until we were in a secure location before starting to question you, in case you decided to try and run.”

I make an annoyed grating sound and begin. “Okay, I was using the road for the usual reason people use a road. Because I didn’t want to be where was behind me, and wanted to be where was in front of me.”

“Where were you going?” He asks.

“I don’t know.” I said. “Just along the road, seeing what there was to see.”

“Let me get this straight.” He says, leaning in, “You were traveling along the road with no idea where you were going, and no plan other than seeing what was over there?”

“Yeah, that’s what you do isn’t it?” I ask, a little confused.

To hold the theme it'd have to be a character from a race widely regarded as being evil or at least monstrous enough that a typical encounter results in violence or hostility.
Aside from that, you need a decent reason for that character to break the race's mould and a way to do it without looking too much like a Drizzt wannabe (if such a thing bothers your group).

“No, as I have said I am on a holy mission from Pelor to seek out evil and banish it wherever it can be found. I do not simply wander the roadside seeing what will happen to me.”

“So you feel called to do what you do by a higher calling?”

“Yes.” He says, seemingly glad I understand at last.

“And because you are called to do this that makes your otherwise aimless wandering actually a quest?”

“Yes.” Sloane says, a little annoyed.

“Well, then by your own definition I AM on a quest.” I lean back on my coils triumphantly.

He looks at me dubiously.

“I highly doubt that.”

“No, listen to me!” I say, rather excited by this realization, “For as long as I can remember I have wanted to see the world, to explore ancient ruins, to find lost treasures, to rescue fair maidens from high cold towers. I wanted to go on an adventure, to see lands unknown. Now that I’m out on my own, I feel the need to travel the land and help people out wherever I can, and see everything new I can.”

“You are trying to help people?” the paladin asks dubiously.

Well you can have people from an evil race full of angst, trying to escape the dark ways of their people, or you can have people like Sol who are just nice guys.

It's perfectly possible to have, for example, a good drow, who is far from Drizzt. When asked why they left the Underdark their answer is "Because it sucks down there. It's always dark, the cuisine is terrible, the decor is tacky and ostentatious, and everybody and their mother either wants to use you in a plot, manipulate you, enslave you, kill you, or use you in some magical ritual. Also, I don't like spiders."

“Yes, and I like to think I have succeeded. Well, I have a long way to go, but I have saved two people from danger, one of them mortal, so that technically means that I have helped people plural.”

“Explain.” Sloane says, leaning in, fixing me with another of his uncomfortable glares.

“Well, first I found a young female being attacked by bandits, so I saw them off and then took the female back to her father. Then I saw a nice old male being attacked by some ruffians so I saw them off and escorted him home. He was trying to get back to his family to celebrate his grandson turning ten, and was nice enough to let me stay the night.”

Sloane leans back, contemplating. “Why do you want to do this?”

“Because it seems like the best thing to do with my life.” I say, shrugging. “I mean I could hurt people and live for myself, or I could try and be a hero and help other people, I can’t really explain it. That’s just the way I am.”

He considers me for a few moments with his piercing stare.

“Well, you’re probably not lying. I am a fair judge of the truth, and you lack the… subtlety to lie well. Perhaps I have acted in haste, though I cannot be completely sure of your long term intentions. I do not find any immediate reason to imprison or otherwise punish you, but I must keep my eye on you or I would not be doing my duty.”

“So, I can’t go?” I ask hopefully.

“Not until I am completely sure, if you are somehow deceiving me and innocents come to harm due to my laxity then I would be unable to forgive myself. If you are telling the truth and are true of heart then I must ask your forgiveness, surely you understand my predicament.”

“Oh I’m good.” I say, smiling. “I’ve never been on a quest before.”

“We are not on a quest.” He says again.

“Well you’re on a quest to serve Pelor, and I am on a quest to be an adventurer, so maybe we could quest together?” I look at him with large pleading eyes.

“We shall travel together, at least for now.” He says, “Now I believe it is time for dinner.”

After a dinner of rather simple, but cheap, broth, we retire to the room the paladin rented. I glance in, and then give him a disapproving look.

“You couldn’t have sprung for a room with two beds?”

Sloan looks away perhaps embarrassed. “The path of the paladin is not a wealthy one.”

“It’s fine, I say slithering into the room and stowing my gear in a corner, pulling out my bedroll. “It’s just nice to have a roof over my head.”

I turn to see Sloan doffing his armor, evidently a little relieved to be out of the clunky suit, and then starts pulling out his own bedroll just as I get mine set up.

“Aren’t you going to use the bed?” I ask.

Sloan looks at me. “I had thought you would prefer it.”

“You paid for the room, so you get the bed.” I say.

“A paladin does not place himself above others, especially those he may have treated unfairly.” He says, somewhat awkwardly.

“Still, I won’t let you sleep on the floor, I wouldn’t be able to sleep if I thought you were uncomfortable.”

“No, I insist.”

“I insist more.”

We look at each other coolly.

I woke slowly, savoring the feeling of simply lying in bed as the sunlight streams in through a window. True to his word, Sloane has left already. I stretch and slither down to the bar, seeing a few surprised patrons. They must get all sorts here, because nobody raises any great commotion in the bar, though I do get a few curious looks. I slither over to the female Sloane spoke to last night.

“Hello mam, I was wondering if you saw my friend Sloane this morning?”

“Yes actually, he said that he would be busy with business at the temple of Pelor for most of the day, and that you have the day to yourself, he asks that you come back in the evening if you decide to wander.”

“Thanks.” I say, my mind already made up. I head back to the room and throw on my coat and belt, heading out the door and into the bustling town.

I slither along the cobbled streets, listening to the novel sound of thousands of feet striking cobble stones. I pass a few stalls and shops that interest me, though sadly my funds are all but spent, and I have nothing with which to buy anything. The day wears on, me wandering the cobbled streets, before deciding to return to the inn, as I am unable to purchase anything worth the taking. Putting down a decorative chain with a regretful sigh, I turn about and head back the way I came.
>>
>>25686066

The bar on the ground floor of the inn is much livelier now, more patrons coming in to enjoy a little drinking as they return from their business. I regret my lack of coin to purchase anything more than a basic broth dinner, and am about to slither back to our room when I stop in my track. A slow grin creeps across my face as a fantastically terrible idea occurs to me. I slither over to the female behind the bar again.

“Hello Solaron, what can I get for you this evening?”

“Actually, I had an idea of what I can do for you.” I say, smiling charmingly.

She looks like she has heard this before. “What is it?” She says humorlessly.

“Well, I was thinking that you have all these people here, and they’re just sitting here doing nothing, I was thinking the room needed a little… entertainment.”

She looks nonplussed. “And how could you provide that?”

“Well, I can act, sing, tell of ancient tales and poetry.”

She holds up a hand, “You’re a bard?” She asks incredulously.

“Let’s go with that.” I say, grinning.

“Okay, it’s been a long time since we’ve had a bard here, just use the stage over there, if it goes well I’ll be able to pay you something for your services.”

I nod and slither over, taking the stand. This attracts the attention of some of the patrons, who look at me with bored interest. Whether it’s because I am on the stage, or because of my race I neither know nor care, at least I have their attention.

With apprehensive fingers I open my book, and begin to read.
>>
>>25686310

The story is an ancient one. The tale of Focke Wulf, a great Nordic paladin who battled evil in all forms across the length and breadth of the land. I start with his first adventure, where he single handedly slew a clay golem with a single blow before vanquishing an evil wizard.

My audience is a little unreceptive at first, a few people listening from the nearer tables, but most of the pub still conversing with each other or sitting in silence. I don’t let that, or the dubious look on the barmaid’s face dissuade me, and launch into the next act with more enthusiasm, illustrating the tale with bold sweeps of my arms and a dramatic voice over. That gets a little more attention.

I have a nice little following by the final act, the culmination of Focke Wulf’s story. Now perhaps the greatest of the paladins, Wulf gathers his forces and rides out to storm hell, to topple Orcus himself from his throne and take his wand of power. With his faithful cavalry at his side. They slaughter their way through the hellish legions, Focke Wulf vanquishing a dragon the size of a mountain, before they finally stormed Orcus’ throne room to face the mighty demon lord.

By this point, most of the tavern is watching in some form or another.

“Orcus looked upon the paladin before him, the tiny human walking forwards swords in hand. He had heard of a human like this, a man whose twin blades carved a bloody path through mortal and immortal alike, whose very presence inspired terror in demons everywhere. Focke Wulf, chosen warrior of the Norse gods.

The light of recognition shines in Orcus’ eyes. He leaps up from his mighty throne, wand of power flashing in his hand.”

I give the audience a long stare, slowly grinning, “And turns upon his heels and flees the room.”
>>
>>25686493

Well, I didn’t get a standing ovation or anything like that, but I did get a few appreciative nods, and a couple patrons tossed coins on stage, so I counted that as a win. I slithered over to the bar to talk to the female again.

“Well, that was nice.” She says, “Not the best I have ever seen, or the most exciting, but a nice bit of entertainment for a quiet night.” She passes a few coins and a mug of beer over the bar. “Have a drink and relax, I think you’ve earned that for tonight.

I toast my beer to her and find an empty corner to coil up in, enjoying my drink. An hour or so later Sloane walks in, heading over to talk to the barmaid, before heading back up to the room. He is striding purposefully and has a more grim expression than his usual diligent grimace, so I slither over and fall in next to him, setting my empty goblet down on the bar.

“What’s up?” I ask as we head upstairs.

“Mission from the temple.” He says, checking over his gear. “A group of orc raiders have taken hostages in a town a little way from here. One of the prisoners is a cleric of Pelor, so the temple wants this handled by someone in the order before local guards storm the camp and get the hostages killed.”

“You’re heading out now?” I ask.

“There is no time to delay, every moment those people remain in raider hands is a failure on my part, I depart immediately.”

He finishes belting his armor on and heads for the door, I stop him with an outstretched hand.

“You mean WE are leaving immediately.” I say, checking my saber, “I’m not letting you go alone.”

“Yes, you are.” Sloane says, “This is my mission, and I must see it through, I cannot be bringing you into harm’s way. You are to remain here until I return.”
>>
>>25686745

I open my mouth to protest, but he forestalls me with a raised finger. “No arguments Solaron, I do this myself.”

He heads out the door, closing it behind him. “And I’ll be watching my back to make sure you’re not following me!” He shouts down the hall.

I wait until the sound of his clinking footsteps has faded, and give him a few minutes to get a nice head start. Then I slither over to the bed, picking up the sheets from his side. I take a deep breath and commit the scent to memory, before donning my gear and heading out the door.

He will find it not so easy to ditch me.

I slither out into the street, awash in the sounds and smells of the city. I lean my head back and concentrate, scenting the air with nose and tongue. It takes a moment, but then I detect the scent of the paladin heading towards the main gate. I slither off after him, thankful that the crowds in the streets have thinned somewhat in the evening hours. Tracking a scent is difficult enough without being people bumping into you and spoiling your concentration.

I slither out through the main gates, following the scent of steel, incense and unwashed human past the somewhat interested guards and out into the countryside. It is easier to track him now, the invisible trail of the paladin standing out against the natural backdrop of the grassy hills. He is moving fast, that much I can tell, and I slither on after him as quickly as my tail can carry me, though I never once catch sight of the paladin ahead of me.

I track him for hours through the night, and at one point marvel at my own endurance. It seems that the months of training and hardship have paid off, I never thought I could pull off an all-nighter like this before. Eventually I begin to smell something else on the wind as well. The scent is not entirely dissimilar to the city I had just left. I smell something alive, probably unwashed, and quite a few of them in close proximity. I also scent the smoke of cook fires and animals. I think that I am pretty near my destination.
>>
>>25700405
THE BEST PART OF MY DAY HAS FINALLY ARRIVED (again)
>>
>>25700405

Slithering closer through the trees, I can start to hear the sounds of a settlement in the distance. This one sounds different, I notice as I draw closer. I hear loud harsh laughter, shouts and cries, and the yipping and braying of animals. I can tell I am very close now, and drop low to the grass, removing my pack and coat, and slithering through the grass on my belly over the crest of a hill. Laid out before me at the base of a hill is a sprawling camp, laid out haphazardly in the dip between two hills. It is populated by large humanoids, though they are obviously inhuman. I recognize them from my days in school, their robust physiology and prominent teeth could only belong to orcs.

The camp is made of large tents made of animal skin and thick cloth, some of the tents fairly large for being portable structures, an indication of a habitually nomadic culture. Various orcs walk around the camp on their business, most of them armed. To my mild surprise I see both males and females down there, though the latter are just as heavily muscled as the former, so perhaps it doesn’t make a difference.

In the center of the camp a structure has been constructed, a tarp raised up over a collection of wooden cages. Inside the cages huddle a ragged and tired group of people, a few more than a dozen perhaps. At the center a man in stained robes is giving comfort to his companions, while the watching orcs jeer and throw sticks and small stones.

--

>>25700652

You know, I never get tired of hearing that.

It's the best part of mine too.
>>
>>25700684

I see a disturbance on the far side of camp, a number of orcs crowding around, making a ruckus. They shout and jeer and generally seem to be enjoying some form of spectacle, though I cannot see what it is through the crowd. The throng grows closer to the center of camp, and they back off a bit. With a groan, I see what is causing the commotion.

Sloane, stripped of his armor and weapon, is being pushed along by a crowd of jeering orcs, hands bound. He is bruised and battered, but seems mostly intact, though the orcs didn’t have it entirely their own way if the group of angry orcish wounded is anything to judge by. They finally open the door to one of the cages and unceremoniously throw him in, laughing at his attempts to batter down the bars with his bare hands.

Well it seems that divine intervention has failed, looks like it’s up to me to save the day. I look down at the camp of a few dozen heavily armed orcs and gulp. Come on Sol, far too late to back out, could you honestly leave these people here? I think for a moment. No, is the answer, no I cannot, I simply cannot slither away after seeing this. Most of my gear is too noisy for this, so I stash my coat, pack and belt in a nearby bush. I hold my saber in my hands and slither forward on my belly, chin gliding over the cool grass as I draw near the orc camp.

SOL WILL SAVE YOU
>>
>>25700895

The orcs are not that cautious with security, at least not against someone like me. The sentries eyes are looking far out over the hills and fields, not at the grass beneath their feet. I move slowly, scales blending in perfectly against the dark grass, slithering closer and closer to the camp. At one point a guard sees some movement and looks over, but all he sees is a large clump of grass and a fallen log. He averts his gaze for long enough to allow a large serpent to slither out of the grass and into the outskirts of the camp.

Thankfully the limits of the camp are fairly poorly lit, so I can move freely, slithering along the ground, peeking around the corner of one of the tents. Sloane is railing defiantly against his captors, who are amusing themselves by throwing small objects at him. To his credit he doesn’t flinch when they hit him, though I can see from here that he’s worried. I would be too in his situation. Right Sol, not it’s time for a rescue, I just have to come up with a plan.

I look around the camp, awash with the light of cooking fires and torches, shadows flickering on the tents in the firelight. Fire. Tents. Fire is a good plan, that should work. I dart from the shadow to shadow, moving around the camp until I have reached the side furthest from Sloane’s cage. I peek my snout in under the tent wall and find it thankfully empty. I slither inside and look around, searching for a lamp, some flint, anything.

>>
>>25701177
I love you and all but you use "slither" far too much. Try "creep" or "slink" for when Sol's being sneaky, "glide", "snake" or "skate" when he's just plodding along.
>>
>>25701645
you're thinking about it wrong man
in this context slither is literally the same as walk
Its not a creative descriptive word hes using, its just a common verb because the main character is a snake
>>
>>25701672
I know. I specifically told OP that "walk" felt strange in the context of a snakeman. But "slither" is still being overused, which can be corrected. Especially in this situation, where Sol is sneaking into a camp of orcs. People don't walk into places like these; they lurk, the tiptoe inside, creeping in with careful steps.

Basically yes. He still has the more subtle abilities like being able to inspire his friends to throw off fear or fight bravely, but that's because of his personal charisma rather than any magical power. Combat wise he is a fast moving duelist with Yuan Ti natural weapons as well as his saber.

After a few minutes of frantic searching I find a tinderbox and pull out the flint and striker. I start sparking onto the carpet and after some effort it starts to smoke. I gently nourish the tiny ember, which soon grows into a small fire, smoking nicely. I pick up the burning patch and move it over to the side of the tent, letting the fire lick at the canvas wall, setting alight a few moments later. I dust off my hands and admire my handiwork. The tent is well and truly on fire now, flames racing along the cloth walls. I hear sudden alarmed shouting outside, growing closer. Right then, time to leave.

I shoot under the smoking tent wall and back out into the night, not considerably brighter as the tent behind me goes up like a tinderbox. I move fast now, racing low across the grass. The orcs night vision will be ruined by the sudden burst of light, and I will have to move fast while the distraction is still effective. I shoot out of the cover of the tents towards the cages, Sloane looking away at the burning tent. The bars of his cage are heavy wood, so it might take a moment to chop through them. I scrabble for a latch, but the cage is bound by a heavy iron lock. Sloane hears me at the door and turns, his arms raised in a fighting stance, but he then drops them in surprise.

“Solaron, what are you doing here?”

“I’m here to rescue you.” I say, winding up for a swing, “Obvious really.”
>>
>>25702082

I start hacking away at the wooden bars, taking off chips and splinters.

“How did you find me?” He asks, still quite surprised.

“Scent.” I say between blows.

Sloane looks like he is both relieved and offended. The orcs are still trying to get the fire out, so it looks like I still might have a little time. The bar is starting to show obvious damage, though the thick wood continues to resist my trusty saber, though a few more good whacks should…

I see a shadow fall over me and the cage, Sloane raising an arm to point.

“Look out!”

Before he is halfway finished speaking I am already whirling around to face the orc rushing me, sword held high. When he brings down his cleaver of a blade he find the space I was a moment ago quite empty, as I slash my saber at his exposed arm. The raider curses but doesn’t seem to slow down, spinning back and lashing out.

“Over here!” He shouts, “I’ve found another one!”

To my horror a few orcs turn from the somewhat extinguished tent and run over, drawing knives and axes as they come. The orc I duel with swings again, battering me about with the sheer force of his blow. I stab with my saber at an exposed flank, spitting him through the side with the long blade, sending him tumbling to the ground. I pull the blade free with a wrench and a spray of blood, preparing to face down my next attackers.
>>
>>25702267

Five of them circle around me now, great slabs of muscle and bone wrapped in armor and chain, weapons in hand. They have me well and truly surrounded, darting in and out. They lash out at me with their weapons, not quite coming into reach, baiting me. I hold my ground in the center of their ring, parrying blows and sending an orc scurrying with a slice to the arm, though they press closer in. I barely turn aside the blow from another, before white hot pain rips across my side, and I feel something warm trickling over my scales.

Not going to pay attention to that now though, I don’t have time to bleed. Other orcs are gathering around now, shouting insults and encouragement at the fighters and laughing when someone gets hurt. After I send another one falling back to the sidelines nursing a bleeding arm, it seems that they have tired of their amusement. I see two of the spectators coming at me with a large net, the other three edging me into it with their blades.

With the net behind me and the fighters in front of me, I really only have one choice available to me. I launch myself forward, a tornado of slashing blade and snapping fangs, driving my attackers back a step in my frenzy. They rally though, and start laying into me, pushing me back with the sheer weight of their attacks. Suddenly I feel the net fall over my back, quickly tightening. Rough hands grab me and I lose my grip on my saber. I try to bite but my snout is clamped shut and I am lifted off the ground, catapulted into a cage, the door slamming shut before I can rise.

I look over to Sloane in the next cage over.

“So I think it’s going pretty well so far.” I say, before dropping back down, woozy from loss of blood.

I feel a hand on mine, and reflexively close my fingers on it.

“Be at ease friend.” Says a calm, gentle voice.

A wonderful warmth seeps into my hand, slowly flowing down my arm and into the rest of me. I feel my side wound grow hot and tingle, and when I look down it has sealed over, smooth fresh scales popping into place. I still feel groggy and dizzy, but the major wound is gone so I guess I’ll heal. I look up to see the male in white robes leaning down and reaching through the bars. His hand is on my wrist and through him the wonderful warmth flows, though now it fades as he stands back up, looking very weary.

“Thank you.” I say as I rise, “What is your name cleric?”

“I am called Galen.” He says, “Follower of the Temple of Pelor.”

I nod.

“This is Sloane, paladin of Pelor, and I am Solaron, wanderer and teller of tales.”

Galen nods. “A pleasure. It was a very brave thing you did, but I fear all you have done is share our fate.”

“The only fate we shall share is our escape.” Sloane says stubbornly, looking at the bars of his cage. He experimentally kicks one of them, though all he seems to do is hurt his foot.

“That’s the spirit.” I say. “Don’t worry guys I’ll think of something.”
>>
>>25702547

If he won without effort, then victory would be meaningless.

Also, it is far more entertaining for you and me when he has to improvise to overcome obstacles, rather than just kill everything.

>>
>>25702756

One hour later, I am sitting on my coils, head in hands, gently tapping my jaw with a finger.

“Anything yet?” Sloane asks, laying down in his cage.

“Still thinking.” I say.

The orcs are evidently taking security much more seriously now, a surly looking female is leaning on a long spear right outside my cage, ready to spit me through the bars if I try anything. Suddenly, a thought occurs to me.

“Actually, I think I’ve got it!” I say as I rise up.

“Is this a good idea or a terrible idea?” Asks Sloane.

“We’ll see after I’m done.” I say.

“Just to let you know,” Galen says, “I’m out of healing spells.”

I ignore the growing sense of disquiet in my gut and glide over to the bars, offering my best smile to my surly captor.

“Hello there,” I say as charmingly as possible, “My name’s Solaron, and you are?”

She grunts. I’m not fluent in orcish, but I’m fairly sure that isn’t an actual name. That’s okay though, I can work with this.

“I was wondering as I was laying here, why you of all the people here were tasked with the rather thankless job of watching the prisoners? I mean honestly an orc of your” I gesture in her general direction, “talents should not be just standing next to a cage all night watching a few foolish prisoners.”

She raises an eyebrow in interest, but does nothing else. Hard crowd, I think to myself.

“I mean honestly, I’m no expert on orcish society, but this must be a low paying job and not very fun at all. You must want something better out of all this work after all? Come on, what’s the plan here? Ransom the hostages? And how much of that money will you see in the end?”

I glide smoothly over to the door, and slide my arms through, leaning over.

“Surely you deserve a better reward for all you hard work, and for the low low price of a simple act of kindness,” I circle the iron lock with my finger, “I’m willing to give one to you.”

I mean, I’m not exactly wealthy now, but I am sure the temple of Pelor would be willing to spring a bit of extra cash to pay off the one responsible for our escape, and I can surely earn more at the inn with my story telling. The orc is seemingly interested, leaning over on her spear to get a better look at me. I have a good feeling about this plan.

“Dance.” She says in a rough voice, though surprisingly smoother than the male counterpart.

“What?” I ask, a little taken aback.

“Dance!” She says again, picking up her spear.

Not particularly wanting to get spitted like a stuck hog, I pull back from the bars and do as she says. It’s not, well, not very good. I had some lessons on dancing back in my childhood days, terrible frightening experiences of trying to hold onto a partner who is evidently as uninterested as I, whilst a tutor tries to run us through a formal dance so complicated we practically got tied in knots. The ‘dance’ I perform now is not so much a formal routine as a series of practice moves meant to for a warm up exercise. She seems to like it though, leaning on her spear and laughing a little.

“What are you doing.” Sloane asks in a bewildered voice.

“Saving us all.” I whisper back when my back is turned. “She’ll let me out and then I can escape to come back for you.”

“Unarmed, with the orcs on high alert?” The paladin asks.

“I’ll figure it out!” I hiss before returning my attention to my audience.

>>25703254

This amuses me.
>>
>>25703282

She seems satisfied by my performance, at least she isn’t stabbing me yet. I dance for her for a little while longer, but I notice she is starting to seem bored, so I try to make the act a little more dramatic, and that catches her attention again, not really changing anything but moving faster and bigger sweeping motions.

“We are all going to die.” Sloane says, “And this is the last thing I will see on the mortal plane.”

“Everyone’s a critic.” I hiss back.

After a little while more I hear clapping from outside and cease dancing, looking out. The orc at the bars is smiling in at me, showing all too many teeth for my comfort and is walking over to the bars. My heart leaps when she pulls out a key and starts undoing the lock.

“Excellent!” I say, “I’m sure you’ve made the right decision.”

The door swings open. “I’m glad we were able to come to a reasonable understa-WOAH!”

She grabs me by the shoulder and pulls me out of the cage, throwing me over her shoulder like a sack of potatoes and starts walking away.

I look up at Sloane, who is staring at me in absolute horror, mouth hanging open. I flash him a thumbs up.

“Told you it would work! Don’t worry, I’ve got this!”

She carries me across camp, a few other orcs laughing as we go.

“Now, not that I don’t appreciate your carrying me, what with me being recently injured and all, but really I can slither perfectly fine, so you can drop me off anywhere really…”

“Oh, is this your tent?”

She carries me through the tent flap and into the little dwelling. Passing through a small general room she hurls me unceremoniously through a door of hanging tassels to land in a crumpled mass on a pile of furs and padding. The she orc steps over out of sight and I frown in impatience. I rise up off the ‘bed’ and start heading for the door.

“I appreciate your hospitality miss, but I have places to go and really must be off.”

I make it halfway through the tassels before a hand on my arm stops me and pushes me back. The she orc is back, having removed most of her armor. It’s a little dark so I can’t make out details, but what she has left on is perhaps best described as ‘minimal’ and left at that.

“No you’re not.” She says, hurling me back into the bedroom.

I pull myself up on my coils. “Actually, yes. I am.”

I launch myself at her, and we crash together, scales and orcish muscle, before tumbling back onto the bed.
>>
>>25703762

We wrestle furiously, sending furs and pillows flying. Orcs may be walking slabs of gristle, but a Yuan Ti is basically a rope of corded muscle a dozen feet long. Also, the lack of legs makes a lot of traditional submission holds entirely useless. She’s trying to pin me but every time she tries and put her weight down I slip through a hole in her defense and counter. Most of my body is basically a smooth round surface, so it’s actually quite hard to hold onto. Especially when I’m fighting for my life.

I manage to get out of her arms for a moment and make a mad break for the door, only to feel her grab onto my tail and start dragging me back. I sink my fingers into the carpet and hold on for a few moments before it proves too much and I am ripped back into the den, the orc making a satisfied grunt. She flips me end over end, me landing on my back on the bed. Before I can move she pins my wrists and drives a knee into my gut.

“Got you.” She says happily.

A quarter of a second later she’s trying to suck in air through her bruised throat, me having driven the blunt end of my snout right in under her chin with all the speed I could muster. I start to go for the door again but she recovers and grabs me, putting me in a head lock. Her arms thus occupied I wrap my tail around her body a few times and start to squeeze, gasping for air through her choke hold.

>captcha: azarba claims WHAT? Is it the absent-minded wizard?
>>
>>25703878

We are like this for a few long moments, each knowing that trying to move from our current position would basically be conceding victory to the other. I hear her labored breath and squeeze as hard as I can, surprised her ribs are still intact. My vision starts to dim, dark tunnels appearing on the edge of my vision as my air starved mind starts to shut down. I am vaguely aware of movement somewhere outside the den, but neither of us have the attention to spare on it.

Suddenly, the tassel door is swept open, a male orc leaning in.

“Hey, why aren’t you on watch?” Then he sees us.

We both freeze in place, her wrapped in my coils, me in a headlock, both panting hard to try and get as much precious air as possible in the brief reprieve.

“Sorry.” The male says, holding out his hands in a regretful manner. “I’ll just wait outside.”

He leaves, chuckling to himself. We each look at the door, back to each other, then back to the door, then we’re at it again, a rolling mass of orc muscle and scaly hide. I tuck my chin and manage to protect my throat, crushing her in my coils. Eventually she lets out a resentful sigh and slips into unconsciousness.
>>
>>25704009
>Prisoner knocks you out.
>lets out a resentful sigh
I love orks, man.
>>
>>25704009

I flop back onto the furs, panting. After a few long moments I catch my breath back and extricate myself from the unconscious orc. Wobbling a bit, I start looking around the tent for something of use in my rescue plan, but am interrupted by the male orc from before, who leans in through the door flap.

“Well that was fast.” He says, somewhat surprised. I start to reach for the female’s spear but a heavy hand grabs me and hauls me out of the tent.

He leaves me to wobble for my balance and starts pushing me away from the partially destroyed tent. It seems our tussle had upset a few support poles.

“Hope you had your fun boy, ‘cause it’s back to the cage now.”

He shoves me again and I turn back to glare at him, but something on his belt catches my eye. I glance down to see my saber crudely jammed through a loop on his belt, next to a war axe. I look back up to him, and our eyes lock. He reaches for his weapon, but few things in the world are faster than a striking serpent. In the time it takes for his hand to get a third of the way my fangs are buried in his neck. By the time his hand makes it two thirds of the way I’ve already emptied my venom glands into him.

He falls to the ground, twitching and convulsing. I grab the weapons from his belt and rush over to the cage. Sloane is looking at me with a look of mixed horror and bewilderment, though he seems pleased that I’ve escaped.

I coil up and launch myself like a ballista bolt, war axe held high, and cleave straight through the damaged bar with the heavy weapon, looking up at the shocked paladin.

“Told you I had everything under control!”
>>
>>25704057
This begs the question: if this sort of thing continues, how long will it be before Sol has a contingent of frustrated females chasing after him in order to claim him as their own?

>>
>>25704236

I hand the stunned paladin the heavy axe and pull myself up, readying my saber.

“Come on, this is our chance! Free the others!” I shout.

Realizing that this is probably the only shot we’ve got, Sloane readies his axe and begins to hack through the conjoining bars between the cages. A few whacks with the heavy axe and a hole is open, Galen surging through, followed by the crowd of desperate hostages.

An orc rushes me with a large knife, and I slash his wrist with my saber, sending him squealing back holding his hand.

“So what’s your exit plan?” Shouts Sloane over the din of the sudden battle.

“I got us out of the cage, the rest is up to you!”

We hurry over to where the orcs have dumped Sloane’s gear, I toss him his bastard sword. He throws the axe at a charging orc, sinking the blade into his shoulder before bringing his sword up to parry another.

“When I saw that orc take you, I thought you were dead for sure.” Sloane hollers over the sound of scraping steel.

“Me too.” I said, “She was, a bit rough.”

Sloan glances at me in a moment before another orc charges.

“She didn’t… I mean you weren’t… I saw the tent shaking, a few of the poles snapped.”

“Yeah.” I say, ducking another orc axe. “It was a bit difficult at first, but I got the hang of things after a while”

“You mean you actually,” He was cut off my an orc trying to decapitate him. “How did you escape?”

“Oh it was easy!” I say, bashing an orc with the hilt of my saber, “I just had to find the right position and keep going until she passed out!”

I grin at him. “Told you I’d think of something!”

He gapes at me for a long moment.

“Let’s just get out of here.”

“Oh so you do have a plan?” I say racing after him.

“Yes, we’re going to steal that wagon.” He says, pointing over to a horse cart in a corner. “Galen! Get the prisoners mounted on that cart, we are leaving!”

Galen, who is busy bashing an orc over the head with a purloined wooden staff, nods and starts shepherding the former prisoners over to the cart.

“Wait!” I say, “I have to go grab my stuff!”

I start zipping off out of the camp.

“Just swing over and pick me up!” I shout over the paladin’s protests.

>>25704813

I follow my own scent back to the bush where I stashed my gear, throwing on my coat and pack and buckling on my belt. I slither low and fast out to the nearby road, seeing a galloping horse cart come crashing out of the orc encampment, barreling down the dirt path towards me with a crowd of poorly restrained villagers bouncing around in the back. I coil up and launch myself through the air into the back of the bouncing wagon. Turning, I see a few orcs trying to give chase, some jumping onto horses.

“Looks like we’re going to have company.” I say to Sloane who is driving like a madman at the reins.

“They’re not going to catch us!” He says with absolute certainty. “We’re on a mission from Pelor!”

In the end, his confidence is warranted. Between his mad driving and our head start we never see the orcs again after we pull out of sight of their camp. Eventually we slow the horses to a gentle canter and move at a more leisurely pace, letting them rest a bit after their mad dash. After an hour or so of riding the familiar city walls rise ahead of us and we head on in for some much needed rest and recuperation.

Sloane and Galen head on over to the temple of Pelor, and I decide to find my way back to the inn. On my way over I drop my gear and dive through a public fountain, uncaring of the flustered passersby, after the long day I had I needed that. Feeling refreshed, I entered the cheery and welcoming inn after what felt like years away.

I decide against alcohol for tonight, I know I’ll be sore and achy enough in the morning to avoid hangovers like the plague. Instead I purchase a fruit juice and sink onto my coils in a nice quiet corner, enjoying the calm of the bar, no orcs trying to kill me or excitable paladins to rescue, just me and my drink. At least for a while, a few hours later Sloane walks back into the bar with, to my surprise, Galen in tow. They each look about as bad as I feel right now and pick up some drinks from the bar before walking over to me and pulling up a table.

I look up at the paladin’s scratched face and bruised nose.

“You look terrible.” I say.

We all look at each other for a long moment. I’m not sure which of us started laughing first, a slow building chuckle, the kind that starts somewhere around the lower spine and just builds as it goes up, but in a few moments we were all laughing.

“You are no beauty yourself.” Galen says, chuckling.

I start feeling my face between laughs. “How bad?”

“Nothing I cannot fix when I receive my healing spells tomorrow.” Galen assures me, so with that said I go back to my drink.

“So,” I say after we’ve all calmed down. “To what do we owe the pleasure of your company master Galen?”

The cleric sips his drink and looks to me.

“Well, I got myself captured by the orcs trying to protect a group of travelers on the road. I have felt the call to travel the land in the name of Pelor, and to spread his most holy light to all darkened corners of the land.”

“So, let me get this straight.” I say, “We’ve got a paladin, sworn to defend the innocent, a cleric spreading the light of Pelor, and a bard wishing to see the world.”

I give them all a level look.

“I think our path is clear.”

“So we had thought.” Sloane says. “Our goals are much aligned and I think we have all seen that going it alone is not for the faint of heart. Perhaps ours is a road we could travel together? At least until our paths lead us apart again.”

Galen nods. “Traveling in the company of two redoubtable warriors would certainly do wonders for my life expectancy.”

I grin. “It’s settled then.” I say, raising my mug. “We go together from here on out, brothers in arms.”

“Noble hearts and worthy souls.” Galen says, raising his mug.

“Defenders of the innocent and vanquishers of the wicked.” Says Sloane, raising his as well.

However, since he's never encountered it in real life (that he can understand) it remains in a mental limbo where he knows intellectually that it exists, but simply does not instinctively associate it with the world he lives in.

It is likely that nothing but directly witnessing or experiencing the act itself will make Sol understand that this is something that actually happens in real life with real people.

Thank you both for taking the time to answer my question. Have a nice night.

So glad to see you are still working on this fantastic story, OP! Thank you for taking the time to share Solaron's story with us.

Nice ending, put a good smile on my face.

Anyways, two questions. First, are you keeping the posts in some text file or something? I know not everybody does, and I'd be more than happy to keep some sort of compilation if you aren't. Second, any idea on how long you plan on making this story go? Just out of curiosity.

1: I am writing this in microsoft word and copy pasting it to here.

2: I will continue to write this story is done or I am dead, whichever comes first.

It is a true pleasure to share his tale with you all.

and it has been a rare pleasure to get to read something of this quality. thankyou for continuing.
I have this weird mental image of this just keeping on continuing, and becoming a daily/weekly thing of "The Continuing adventures of Solaron! Bard Extraordinaire"
>>
>>25706998

I plan on eventually ending it, as all stories do, but not before exploring the full extent of what this character has to say, and the story he has to share.

Once again it's three in the morning, i just got off work, and Solaron is here to entertain and lift my spirits. Thanks, OP.

I HAVE AWOKEN

After our return as triumphant heroes, we spent two days simply recuperating from our harrowing experience. True to his word Galen fixed what damage we had left with another few shots of healing warmth, and we were all looking right as rain by afternoon. But even that healing magic was unable to really sink in and restore us fully. For that, there was only rest, drink and good food, a cure we took to gladly in the pub on the ground floor.

When I had recovered enough, I retook the stage in the pub and continued performing. I told stories, recited poetry, even sang a little, and reception was usually warm to my performances, if not overly enthusiastic. The barmaid, whose name was Lyda, was thankful for my services and paid well enough, though I was certainly not getting rich here. It seemed that having your inn host a Yuan Ti bard was reason enough for many patrons to attend, if only for the novelty of the performance.

This state of affairs continued more or less unchanged for a week and a half. We ate, drank, talked and I continued my performances to bring in some cash to pay the tab. I did a little shopping with what disposable income I had, it wasn’t much but I got my hands on a few simple ornaments. A plain chain to hang from a picket, a piece of colored cloth to hang on my belt, presentation is important for a performer after all. I also picked up a few more practical items, some camp gear and so forth.

Then one day, our rest came to an end.

Is that adventure I smell?
>>

I was just getting breakfast with Galen when I saw Sloane conversing with Lyda over at the bar. He checked a piece of paper on the table and then turned back to us. As he walked over he had his ‘righteous warrior’ face on, so I braced myself for whatever was coming. He sat down next to us and took a sip of his drink.

“Gentlemen, I have received word that a group of individuals are in dire danger, and we may be the only hope they have for survival. I will give you the details on the way, finish your meal and pack your gear, we depart immediately.”

I perk up at this. “Are we going on another adventure?”

“We shall see.” Sloane says as he heads back up to the room.

I finish my breakfast and hurry back to the room, packing my traveling gear and belting on my saber. Galen throws on a simple pack and picks up his staff. Thus prepared, we depart the inn and head around back, climbing into our purloined horse cart, and set off on our journey. I quite like this cart, saves on slithering, and I don’t actually have to ride on the horses just sit in back and let them do the work.

“So where exactly are we going?” Galen asks.

“To a tomb.” Sloane replies.

“That sounds charming.” I say dryly as I lean in to talk.
>>
>>25716119

“Indeed.” The paladin says as he drives the horses around a corner. “Recently a tomb was uncovered, after having laid abandoned for Pelor knows how long. A group of archeologists set out to investigate the tomb, but they have missed their check in and the camp has been deserted. We have been hired to investigate and, if necessary, rescue the investigators.”

“Are we alone in this task?” Galen asks.

“Perhaps, perhaps not. Our employer hired a team of mercenaries to perform our mission, but that was days ago and there has been no word since. We don’t know what has happened to them, or indeed if they still live.”

“So we’re going down into a dark tomb to rescue hapless innocents from unknown horrors?” I say, “Sounds like an adventure to me.”

We travel until nightfall, bouncing gently in the back of the horse cart as we draw closer to our goal. Just as the sun sinks down below the horizon do we finally arrive. It’s a small camp, some tents pitched around the long cold remains of a cooking fire, some personal gear strewn about. Nobody is here. A quick search confirms our initial suspicion that the camp has been abandoned for some time. I follow an old scent trail from the camp further back into the woods, and we locate the mouth of the tomb, a cave leading back into a hillside, open and waiting like a gaping maw.

Deciding that there was no point in heading down into that rather dismal cave without rest, we decide to make use of the helpfully provided camp and rest for the night before delving down to face whatever unknown forces might menace both us and our charges. So it is with a somewhat apprehensive heart that I curl up and go to sleep. Admittedly the camp is not the most comfortable place to call home, but it is surprisingly roomier than our room back at the inn, a whole tent to myself rather than trying to cram three people into one tiny room.

My dreams are, uneasy. In that strange realm between sleeping and waking I am slithering through tight passages and corridors of dark stone, my weapons and gear gone. I turn and look over my shoulder, listening for movement but nothing is there, so I continue on. Even though I cannot see anything I am filled with the feeling of being watched, and sometimes I think I can hear faint movement behind me, though every time I turn nothing is there. I continue through twisting passages that seem to shift as I pass through them, convinced the disembodied sounds are growing closer. Finally I hear what can only be a footstep and whirl around to see…

I lay in bed, panting, looking up at the cloth ceiling.

I take a few deep calming breaths, trying to recover my nerve. It was only a dream, I remind myself, just a dream and those cannot harm you. Right, a harmless dream and nothing at all is going to go horribly wrong in the next ten seconds. Well, nothing does but that doesn’t do much to relieve the tension I still feel after that night. Try as I might to try and slip back off I am unable to return to sleep, though whether I am too excited from the dream or I fear I might have another if I sleep I cannot say.

I put my arm over my eyes and try to block out the sound of the wind in the trees outside, maybe then I could…

That did not sound like the wind. That did not sound like the scrabbling of leaves. That sounded like a twig snapping.

I grab my saber and silently creep along, poking my head out of the tent at ground level and looking around. I don’t see anything, or smell anything when I scent the air. I glide out onto the cool night grass, looking around, raising u just high enough to see above the foliage. Nothing moved but the trees and the undulating grass. I hold there in complete stillness for a few long moments, before turning and going back to the tent. But just as I go I hear another rustle in the underbrush behind me and whip about sword raised. I don’t see anything but the dark woods, but I am sure something was there. I gaze into the dark woods, trying to make out any figures there, when a hand suddenly grips my shoulder.

I whirl around, sword held high and what I like to call a defiant cry on my lips. Only to see Sloane standing there, looking rather alarmed.

“Easy Solaron, it’s just me.” He says, holding up an arm to protect himself.

I stare at him for a moment, then lower my sword feeling rather silly.

“Now what are you doing prowling around out here?” He asks tiredly.

“I thought I heard something.” I say, scratching my arm embarrassedly. “Came to check it out.”

“Find anything?” He asks.

“No.” I say, “Just couldn’t sleep I guess.

Sloane nods. “Try to get some rest, I’ll keep an eye out for any trouble.”

I grimace and nod, heading back to bed. After an hour of uncomfortable tossing and turning I finally drop back into an uneasy sleep.

The morning could not have come soon enough. I drag myself out of bed and clip on my gear, ready to head down into the tomb. I rise to find the rest of our little band already awake. A quick breakfast is served in the silent camp, everyone is oddly quiet this morning. No words are spoken, no jests exchanged, we all know what lies before us. Or last preparations in place we head on up the slope to the mouth of the tomb. When we reach it we all wait for a long moment, none of us willing to cross the ancient threshold.

“Nothing else for it.” Sloane eventually says and, holding a lantern in front of him and his sword in the other, descends into the dark tomb. He’s right of course, and Galen and I follow him down into the silent crypt.

This must be the most unnerving place I have ever been. Once we travel far enough from the entrance for the sunlight to fade away we have only the light of our lanterns to guide us, everything else is in total darkness. Yuan Ti possess decent night sight, but in this absolute darkness I cannot see beyond the beam of light cast forth by our mirrored lanterns. I scent the air with flicking tongue, but detect nothing but us and the long slow decay of the tomb around us.

“Smell anything?” Galen asks.

“Only old death.” I say before pressing on.

Wow, we actually pushed one to autosage.

Guess we'll see how long it lasts now.

We hear nothing but footsteps and the smooth sliding of scales over ancient stone as we go. Thus far there has been only the single passage, all others we pass have long since collapsed. We pass a few rooms, and see some evidence that the investigators may have stopped here to examine the site, but we find nothing of use so we are forced to press on deeper into the tomb complex. I had battled orcs and common bandits, been trained by a fine swordsman to face down opponents of all kinds. I was prepared for many things, prepared for terrible monsters to emerge and try to kill us all. But I was not ready for, nothing.

And that is exactly what we found as we continued deeper into the tomb, nothing. No monsters, no victims, no blood, no clues, no sound, no light. Even the air was dead still save for what was moved by our breaths.

“Are you all right Solaron?” Galen asks in his usual gentle voice.

Despite his soft words I jump a little, so used was I to the silence of the crypt that any sound was startling.

“Yes why?” I ask rather quickly.

“You seem very ill at ease.”

“I had, unpleasant dreams last night.” I say, feeling a bit embarrassed. It did not do for a brave adventurer to complain of nightmares.

“My sleep was disturbed as well.” Galen says.

“As was mine.” Says Sloane.

“Really?” I ask. “I had nightmares about being chased down dark corridors. Kind of like the ones we’re in now.”

I look around uncomfortably at the dark tunnels we pass through.

“So was I.” Sloane says after a moment, Galen nodding as well.

“We all had the same nightmare?” I ask. “What does that mean?”

“Nothing good.” Sloane says as he proceeds further into the dim tunnels.

We proceed for a little while more before I notice something, the tiniest hint of a scent on the still air. I hold up a hand for the party to stop.

“What is it?” Sloane asks.

“Think I smell something.” I murmur, dropping low to the ground and sliding along, tongue flicking over the dry stone trying to catch the scent.

For a moment I think I’ve lost it, but then there it is! I linger, memorizing the scent, it was nothing I had smelled before, but it was definitely alive, probably humanoid, and had passed by this way a few days ago if I was any judge of such things.

“Humanoid I think, passed this way a few days ago.”

“Lead the way then!” Sloane says, and I’m off like a bloodhound, gliding along on my belly over the cavern floor following the scent.
