Journey so far: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Final%20Fantasy%20Quest

The sounds of the camp about you stir you to life. The smells of sweat, burnt wood and an army of men urinating combine in the dewy morning air. When you sit up, you already see Horry tending to the chocobo. When he turns, he wears a bright smile.

"Morning, Ser Cecil." You notice he looks a lot better about being surrounding by so many. The army has almost finished packing up, tents tied to chocobo saddles or on the back of the men and woman marching. The two you had shared meat with the previous night approach. You stand, shaking their hands, head still a little groggy.

"You slept through it all last night," grinned the guardsman with the heavy stubble. "If every night on the march is like that, I'll be glad to war for years."

"I'll be glad if it's over in a day..." spoke his fresh-faced junior, clearly hung over. "Anyway... best of luck, Cecil. I hope Corneria holds what you hope for."

You wish them luck in their battles, too, before turning back to your own camp. Then you see the woman from the previous night, wearing her hair in a single braid instead of two, as she talks close with Horry. The boy's face is almost as red as his hair and, toying with it gingerly between two gloved hands, he holds a braid of earthy brown hair. The ex-teacher turns away from him, but not before placing a gentle kiss on his cheek. As she turns to pass by you, she smiles furtively.

"Safe travels, Ser."

Then the army starts to move and, after Horry finishes packing up the tent and saddles the chocobo, so do you. Before too long, you are on the road, Horry still holding the braided hair in one gloved hand even as he controls the reins of his bird.

You can fast travel if you like, or speak with your companion.
>>
>>25625474
Fast travel.
Horry obviously is nervous about it, and if she gave him a lock of her hair, they obviously hit it off right.
Hopefully his luck with love will be better than ours, and she won't be dead because of his actions.
>>
>>25625545

You make no effort to speak too much on the remaining road to Corneria. You remind Horry that you have a mission and he rides dutifully beside you. It will take some days for the aches of riding to leave, you imagine. As you stop for rations and to feed the chocobo, Horry talks mostly about Gretla, the braided swordswoman, and how he wonders why such a strong woman would become a teacher when she would be sure to be grand adventurer.

You ride just as fast through the night as you did in the day. It reaches noon in the next day when you finally reach the busy city of Corneria. Men and women peddle their wares, children run through the streets and all over the city, there is talk of war, of the airships that took the Crystal and of the Dragon Knight's betrayal. You can visit the tavern, the shops or the White Church. Or you can head straight for the castle, providing you think you can be granted entrance.
>>
>>25625891

(Sorry for the wait, net problems again.)
>>
>>25625891
Go to the castle. We need to present ourselves and the Orb to the King.
We can say we were sent by Ser Hoskeep, and we can show the Orb as evidence of our story.
>>
>>25626099
This
>>
>>25626099

The gates to the castle grounds aren't too difficult to find. You and Horry ride down the Knight's Street, a long road leading past the most prominent buildings of the city, including the church and the houses of some noble merchants and people of import to the castle. At the gates, you are stopped by the guards, dressed in the same armour and mantles as those who rushed to the king's aid in your vision.

But after you show them the Orb, they glance at one another, before one pardons himself and vanishes inside. When he follows, a woman does, too. She is an imposing sight, to say the least. Her moon white hair hangs in long, soft waves, framing a face gentle but strong, her lips perpetually lifted in a half smile and her deep, purple eyes seemingly all knowing. She wears a long, white cloak over robes or purple, black and white layers. Over her breast she wears the sigil of Erelund but, over all, she wears the Four Crystal, made of gold and hanging from a gold chain around her neck. The bottom right rhombus is filled with a flat, wide ruby.

"Welcome. You claim to possess an Orb of Guidance, Ser...?" After you introduce yourself, her purple eyes slide down to the orb, looking over it carefully. "Might I ask what it showed you?"
>>
>>25626314
"It showed me the King of Erelund, the attack in the throne room, and the taking of the Grand Crystal."
Short and to the point. Enough to show that we're the real thing.
>>
>>25626504

She gives you a gentle smile and slowly flicks her long lashes once. Otherwise, her expression changes not at all. Horry's chocobo titters as he glances between the two of you.

"And which of the Dragon Knight's lieutenants were with him?" she asks.
>>
>>25626612
Don't make me read the archive, man
>>
>>25626612

"I didn't mention any Dragon Knight's."
>>
>>25626627

(Shall I assume you answer truthfully, then?)
>>
>>25626658
Yes
>>
>>25626627

It's a Dragoon, a Red Dancer and a Geomancer. I'd rather tell the King directly though.
>>
>>25626665
>>25626671

(Can I get a consensus?)
>>
>>25626742
This one here
>>25626671
>>
>>25626671
The Dragoon was Hellond Highwind, the Dragon Knight being referred to.
So the lieutenants we saw would be the Dancer and the Geomancer, unless that wyvern counts as a lieutenant.
>>
>>25626742
We're going to tell her that we saw the Dancer and the Geomancer, but we want to talk details with the King.
>>
>>25626665
Sceonding here, don't make us read the archives, especially since it involves a death.
>>
>>25626942
How we left Elly to get her throat slit and die because we were so sure that she'd be alright and because of the shiny bauble should be something we have to relive every time.
It reinforces that actions have consequences and that ultimately we have to live with our choices.
>>
>>25626652

The woman gives a deep, throaty chuckle, before reaching a slender, pale hand towards the Orb. Before you can retrieve it, she has her fingers laced between your own, holding the sphere. For the first time since the moment you grabbed it in that filthy dead pond, slivers of light peek from between your fingers.

"Very good," the woman sighs, eyes gleaming as she watches, before releasing. She pulls the skirts of her robes wide, curtseying deep before you. "My Warrior of Light. We have been awaiting your arrival. I am Olbessa, Sage of the Grand Fire Crystal and advisor to King Ullond Odinfinn. Allow me to escort you inside." Her glance slides to Horry, who rears his chocobo back a step under her gaze.

"Harrion, please guide Ser Mycroft's companion to his chambers." Horry casts you a glance, but dutiful to the last, allows his chocobo's reins to be taken and pulled into the castle grounds. Instead of moving up the steps and into the towering white walls of the castle itself, he's led along the paved path and through the gardens.

"Worry not," Olbessa turns and leads you, allowing you to ride in yourself. When you reach the steps, a young man in a uniformed jerkin rushes forth to usher your chocobo away. "He's being taken to the noble's quarters. For security, we are currently allowing only the essential inside the castle. I'm sure you can understand why."

Her voice echoes as she leads you through the empty, marbled court, where a throne, albeit not as large as the one you saw in your vision, stands before a wide hall where noble men and women would come to hear the words of their King.

"His Grace is currently in a war meeting with some of his vassals, and will be for some days," she continues as you walk into a series of corridors, windows overlooking the other buildings within the castle grounds. You can see men training outside the barracks, practice swords clashing and arrows thrumming into wooden targets. You can also see the great Airship Dock, a tower with multiple wide, wooden doors, most of which are open and empty. "He entrusts me with the briefing of his valiant warriors until as such a time he is ready."

Finally, she opens the door into a small room, containing a simple place with a plush sofa and two chairs around a long, ornate oak table. A window looks over one of the floral gardens. A painted picture of the king, dressed in all his finery and holding a crossbow against a scene of a hillside stream, hangs on a wall, looking sternly at you. On the table, a vase of long, slim flowers, a mix of light, airy colours, sits.

"Castles can be such cold places. I have always preferred my comforts, so I could never receive my guests on such on an uncomfortable seat as the king." She sits upon one of the chairs, gesturing the other to you. She lifts a small, crystal bell, giving it a ring. Moments later, a plain faced maid steps inside and she is soon ordered to bring a pot of tea.

"Now... before you meet your fellow Warriors, I must ask some questions you might find... discomforting. But I must require that you answer them truthfully."

The maid opens the door again, hastily placing a tray on the table. Olbessa lifts the pot and pours a fragrant, dark tea into two china cups. She blows lightly upon her own and drops a cube of sugar inside, before lifting her eyes to you and giving you that half smile once more.

"Do you bear an allegiance to any king, queen, empress, regent, lord or leader of any sort within the Realms of Spring?"
>>
>>25627297
I prefer that anon's suggestion of stopping the moon in the sky, so that it never sinks and takes the souls of the departed with it. Never let another persons heart be rent asunder by cruel fate and the passage of a celestial body inured to heartache by virtue of it being victim of destiny to never meet the glowing face of the sun.

>>25627312
I rather like my homeland, but that's just because it's quite pleasant in the summer, I bear no liege nor bend a knee to any man except myself. I do share loyalty as a brother in arms to Horry, and by extent Sir Hoskeep and company.

"A traveller through and through, I see," she chuckles, sipping at her tea. "Forgive me if you find my questioning offensive, but these are trying times we are entering, where many will die and all the noble men and women of all courts fear for their future." It's the fact she says this with a smile that you find more disquieting. "But you mentioned Ser Hoskeep. You must be one of the party the King sent to rescue his daughter from the bandits, yes?"

At that point, her lips curve down in a discontent frown.

"Perhaps the most troubling element of this entire affair. Well, on to the next question. You will be asked to brave dangers unlike those you have ever faced before, and it would be most unfair or unwise for any of us to assume that you will do such without expectation of some gratitude. So please, Ser Mycroft, be frank with me. What can we, the regents of all Erelund, do to reward you for the return of our Grand Crystal? Is it lands you desire? A castle? Gold? An airship all of your own? Perhaps even the hand of a highborn lady, or..." Her eyes flash playfully. "Perhaps a pardon for some past crime? Please, name a reward and, if it is in my power, or the power of the King, we shall grant it."

Wait, no.

We should become a ninja and learn double strike, with our reD, we'll become a warrior of legend in the bedroom

That or continue to learn red magic spells right now till we are good enough to double cast. Only then do I suggest we learn blue magic or something more esoteric, i.e. calculator

Capcha is clearly still in the ominous portents business.

Blue Magic might be a mixed bag, depending on what we get hit with. It's sure to be as unpredictable as hell to our opponents, and could lead to some potentially devastating combos if Cecil keeps up at his sword and Red mage skills. From a lore perspective, it could also provide some insight into how all creatures (from the gobbiest goblin to Bahamut) utilize magic, potentially giving Cecil glimpses of knowledge that would only be known by some of the most powerful beings in creation. This is all provided that Cecil can withstand those beings and survive encounters with them, however.

Time magic is more intuitive and immediately useful, as it results in a lot of great buffs and debuffs. This could turn Cecil into one helluva Gish, as he could combine time/white mage buffs to make himself into a dangerous melee opponent while still retaining support/black magic capabilities. Time magic also hints at understanding some secrets of creation if taken to an extremely high level.

Guys, the first Red Mage WoL was a thief who accidentally made a zombie apocalypse.

We, the second Red Mage WoL, are now going to become a Blue Mage. What message will this tell to our Red Mage brethren? You need to learn a different school asap or you'll stay an incompetent Red Mage and ruin everything?

Poor Red Mages.
>>
>>25628493
It sends the message that Red Mages are opportunists that jump at the chance to improve.
>>
>>25628478

>>
>>25628249

(Arithmeticians are the Calculators of this setting, but they work a little differently.)

>>25628048
>>25628129

"Your zeal for etheric knowledge is most admirable, Ser Mycroft. But I'm afraid it would not be possible to learn all such schools of magic you wish. As an enthusiast of magic myself, I have met with a Blue Mage, who taught me that the Blue can only be learned by those who visit the Velyaran swamp, where the hidden village of Azura lies. There, one must forsake all the magics of men to learn that of the beast. Summoning is no man-made magic, but the Rites are a sacred process that require a great sacrifice. Some Summoners lose their sight, some lose their tongue, some lose their ability to perform magic, some even lose their mind. And finally, Time Magic... is trickier still. I would be entirely unable to promise such a reward. But I can do my best to discover whether or not we could arrange instruction for you."

>>25628038

At the mention of a Pinion, she smiles amusedly.

"That would be much easier to accommodate. It might take some time, but we could certainly find a Phoenix Pinion with you. The reach and power of the Erelish army opens many doors, you might find."
>>
>>25628493
This is what I was saying, we should remain a pure Red Mage till we can at least double cast, thats something Red mages are known famously for. After that, it should be alright to branch out a bit, but we need to establish our identity as a red mage first. Diverging this early is a bad idea, unless we're playing baldur's gate and its better to multiclass asap.
>>
>>25628493
Exactly. Red Mages are worse braggarts than Bards, thinking they can get through life with just their swag and general utility.
Instead, it always leads to incompetence, failure, and the disgust of all other classes.

What's the Bard Warrior of Light's claim to fame? Being able to stop entire armies in their tracks, ending a war with nothing more than a few songs, banging all the hot wood nymphs, creating a forest from nothing and marrying a princess.

What's the Red Mages got?
Catastrophic failure that killed an entire town and turned everyone there into zombies.

Face it, we're scrubs. We chose this path, we chose to walk down this path, and becoming a turnip farmer is the least damaging thing we could do to the world.
>>
>>25628493

I was under the impression that we'd be learning it alongside of being a Red Mage.

It sends the message that Red Mages shouldn't be afraid sticking to being *just* a Red Mage. While Red Mages are actually pretty useful outside of turn-based combat (like multi-classing in Baldur's Gate or such), they don't appear to be able to learn the highest levels of white magic or black magic for whatever reason. X-cast is OK if used with just red magic... but X-cast coupled with other schools of magic can be devastating or life-saving.
>>
>>25628527
So if we learn blue magic, we lose our red magic?
No thank you, not that desperate, lets just continue to learn red magic till we find another branch of magic we can follow without becoming fatalistic.

Sage, what about this >>25628249
From what I just read mystics are cool.
>>
>>25628527
So Blue Magic means we lose all other magic? Doesn't sound like something we want to go for unless we hit the limit of White, Black, and Time.
And Summoning sounds like a complete crapshoot as to whether we'd even come out of it able to use it.

Time Magic, a Phoenix Pinion, and an airship so we can go anywhere for our research sounds like the three best rewards.

Y'know, I just remembered the Sage class from FFIII was basically a White Wizard and a Black Wizard together. It knew the best of all the spells and it's only downside was it was slow. Maybe that's an option?
>>
>>25628607

"You have an interest in becoming an Augur, too?" The woman blinks her deep, purple eyes at you bemusedly. "You are ambitious if nothing else, Ser Mycroft." She laughs gently into her cup. "The Augurs of the East are lightly trusted, if ever. Few trust those who can curse the fates of their fellow man in so many different manners. But relations between Erelund and Wujia have always been good, so we should be able to arrange a teacher for you in the arts of Condemnation."
>>
>>25628740
Are we being limited in what magics we can get assistance in learning?
I'm getting the feeling that we want to learn all available magics that won't cause exclusions, like Blue Magic and Summoning, and get assistance for a Phoenix Pinion and a personal airship.
>>
I honestly think we should actually go for blue magic. sure we lose out on the other stuff, but the shit you learn with blue magic is varied as fuck, and its much easier to learn new things in it.
>>
>>25628693

Continuing down the Red Mage path could logically lead to that. Perhaps we could ask for tutelage from the foremost White/Black mages in addition to access to the highest levels of power that they have? A Red Mage is less of a class here and seems more like a profession; someone who can fight pretty well, and has also learned white/black magic. Barring plot points, there's no reason why we shouldn't be able to learn from the best of both schools and become a sage.
>>
>>25628740
Well, a man has to have plans, and plans for when those come into fruition. But let's start small, if you're willing to find me an Augur to study under, a map to the heart of the swamp you mentioned, a tome on the beings summoners can petition for aid, a library for red mage research on an airship, and look for a phoenix pinion. I will be your man till the end of my days, or such a time if I consider the actions of this kingdom harmful to the world as a whole.
>>
>>25628898
Yes, it's varied, and yes, it may be easier to learn new things.
But we have to survive getting hit with those things, and we may not get what we want with it.
>>
>>25628926
hence the research airship, plus it's an airship.
>>
>>25628740

West*, not East

>>25628783

"Certainly, we can organize for all these rewards. An airship with a library, prepared to be filled by all the materials you shall acquire in your pursuits of etheric mastery, an Augur from the West to teach you and a Phoenix Pinion. However, I feel I should be less vague. Time Mages.. are widely shunned by all those who follow the teachings of Cosmos. They would say that to manipulate the fabric of reality is a great affront to the Goddess of Harmony. The Throne of Erelund long ago swore a pact with the White Temple of Orbonne. Their laws are ours and, as such, learning Time Magic would make you a fugitive within our borders." She looked at her nails coolly. "Of course, I hold no judgement of a man who makes such a choice, and I can assure you that my potential involvement in your discovery of such arts would be entirely at your discretion and my own. I just thought you should best be informed."
>>
>>25629023

>>
>>25629006
hmm, point. well, If we decide against blue magic, let us go Time Magic.
>>

>>
>>25629023
Fuck da po-lice lets get airship'd and learn proper magic, TIME magic. then cast float on the party all at all times.
>>
>>25629023

So Time Magic and Blue Magic are just stuff she could offer us information on, then? She could probably give us a good start on them, but that information could be discovered by someone with a lot of time and research on their hands (and an airship).

>>25629095

If she's a true politician, she may choose to make a lot of promises but waffle in the end and give us a whole lot of half-promises and/or half-assed substitutes instead.
>>
>>25629121
How about we pass a few milestones before we get our info. I'll let us weigh the consequences better. For now, Airship.
>>
>>25629137
*IT'LL
>>
I think we should just go for blue magic.
>>
>>25629113

I think that we should get:

1.) Airship + Library.

2.) Augur training OR

3.) Unrestricted access to learn from the highest schools of White/Black magic. No prejudice, waffling, back-talk, or any delaying shenanigans from the teachers. X-casting Fira is pretty ho-hum, but X-casting Meteor would be a sight to see.

This is assuming, of course, that legendary spells like Ultima, Meteor, and the like are actually kept in records by the kingdom and aren't buried in some obscure library languishing at the bottom of the sea.
>>
>>25629137

I'm not certain I want us to be potentially branded as heretics for life.
In fact, I'm certain I don't want that, I can't speak for other portions of Cecil's psyche though.

Can't we just learn a little bit of mysticism and keep on the Red Mage track, maybe become this sage >>25628693 I've been hearing about?

We got our ship and our library, and they're fetching us a Phoenix Pinion, I'm good with that, lets do more research before we dive into a potentially irreversible plan of action.

Exactly, at leas the bandit king would be honest that he'll have his underlings stab you in the back, guts, dick, and face.

It didn't specifically mention that Lerian died. So perhaps she's still kicking around somewhere, researching what went wrong with whatever she did. Or that she decided to cut her losses for now, became a massively powerful Lich and raise an army of undead to guard her while she continues her research into whatever.

"Black and White Magic...? Well, certainly there are secret markets in cities across the land, and travelling merchants, from which one can buy tomes of such spells to learn. But all such tomes are scribed by the White Temples and Black Mystics. I imagine the more powerful the spell, the more tightly they would protect the secrets of their learnings and the harder it would be to find. Such fabled spells as Holyga or Firaja, I doubt one would be able to find very easily at all. I'm afraid we hold no sway over the White Temples to get a hold of these most guarded tomes. Of course... if one was to become a Sage, eventually all the secrets of both schools might become available to you. And I don't mean a Sage, like me, but rather a true Sage, one who has studied at the Ancient Library in the Archadian Wasteland."

They shall surely await you by the time you retrieve the Fire Crystal from the traitor, Ser Hellond Highwind. I must ask that you remain in the castle for the next few days, as we await the other Warriors of Light to arrive and deliberate upon how best to advise you. "There have always been four, to begin with. How many will live at the end of your journey...," she shrugs, pouring herself another cup of tea. "As to whom they will be, I cannot know. But four will come, as did you. Should they not, the Orb of Guidance will reach to someone who will."

When you ask about said Orb, she chuckles heartily for a few good moments, even doubling over ever so slightly.

"Heavens... I've never read of a Warrior of Light that was so quick to get rid of the Orb. It's an interesting question you ask. I cannot be all too sure. Some stories have the Orbs show but a single vision. Others two. The Orb of Halyadan the Paladin showed him the future of his daughter whilst he lay dying, so that he would know his sacrifice was not in vain. I would suggest holding on to it, personally, but do what you will."

"I can most certainly understand your desire to meet the ones who will share this journey with you. Alas, first, we will have to wait for them to arrive. I fear you are but the second. But come, let me introduce you to her."

Olbessa sets her cup down and stands, throwing her cloak behind her and leading the way back out. Servants bustle about the halls of the great, white castle, guards stand in their armour around every corner and occasionally you are passed by some lordly looking men, wearing sigils on their chest, and some that look like old crusty librarians, muttering amongst one another. Finally, you come outside to a Praying Grove, walled off from the rest of the garden. It's a neat, pristine garden with a pool of crystal clear water, swaying flowers, lush trees and a white statue of Cosmos, benevolently looking over the figure kneeing before her.

"Ferra, I wish to introduce someone to you," speaks Olbessa, gesturing to you. "This is Cecil P. Mycroft III, a Red Mage of Silinlund. Cecil, this is Ferra Fairwater, a White Mage native to Corneria."

<continued>
>>
>>25630403

The girl can be no older than fourteen. She stands from her prayers, her red ponytail jostling over the let-down hood of her robe, which is white and red in true white mage fashion. She turns, looking up at you with big, wide teal eyes, the same colour of the gem holding her braid. It resembles one side of the Augur symbol, the Fate Wheel, a flat circular shape with a curving tail and a hole through the center, which holds her hair in place.

"It's a pleasure to meet you, Ser," she curtseys, holding her robe up over her ankles, her eyes shyly flickering down. "Are you one of my fellow Warriors?".

>>
>>25630531

It has been said by certain credible and sometimes spherical sources that I may be. But for certain, I am Cecil, and it's a pleasure to meet you.
>>
>>25630618

You reach for your hat, only to remember that it still floats on the dank water of Bandit's Wood. You settle for a bow instead.

"Please, call me Ferra," she smiles, a small bow of her lips, the smile of a girl who guards her feelings often.

>>25630555

Her smile fades. "I am most sorry to hear that, Cecil... I found my own Orb in the Temple gardens, whilst I was planting some onion bulbs..." She bites her lip, big, teal pools shifting off.

"Well, as you two get further acquainted, I fear I must depart," Olbessa speaks up. "The King will require my council, and I have many duties besides that best be seen to. Ferra, if you would be so kind, show Cecil the way to the guest chambers when you are done, yes?"

The redheaded girl replies in the affirmative as Olbessa gives one more bow before slipping inside the castle. When you are alone, the girl turns away, her hands joining in front of her as she wanders to the pool.

"You are a Red Mage," she shoots a tentative glance your way. "You must have been on many adventures, yes?"

Mostly wanders, adventures are where something exciting happens and you have a glorious and happy ending. I've had few of those. Instead I wander, I recall this time when I lost my hat being chased by a squibble of malboro's, they kept pulling themselves along, and I could see my hat floating and getting bumped into the air above the pack of them.

It was then that I happened upon a rustic church long abandoned deep in the wood, at the top of the belfry though was a giant silver bell, shining in the sunlight as if it were the day it was made. I shut my eyes, ran as hard as I could and cast blind at the bell, it reflected, and all those malboro's with their squiggly eye stalks were blinded, just long enough for me to hop across the top of the horde, snag my hat, and run back the other way.

I hope no one else ran afoul of them, I'm worried if there was someone attending that ruin, polishing that bell in anticipation of it reopening, oh well, as I said, wanders not adventures.

Oh, we'll always have a choice, you know. We'll always have a choice. And more likely than not, we're going to choose wrong, because people forget relevant details on a frequent basis, and she's going to die, just like Elly.

>>25631100

Your story, despite being entirely untrue, makes the girl burst into a fit of sheepish giggling. The mention of a red hat bouncing atop a squibble, as you say, of Malboros has
her picture a much cuter scene than would really happen in reality. If she knows the truth of Blind, that it doesn't work like the bright light you describe it, she does not mention it.

"Very impressive," she settles, sighing, her cheeks ruddy with the amusement. "I must admit, Cecil, I was very nervous about what kind of people I might meet. The other Light Warriors, I mean. Although I am more attuned to magic than most of my brothers and sisters at the Temple, I... I am not much liked. Ever since I told the White Wizard that one girl broke her oath..." At that, she turns bright red.

Actually no, that's not true. I like being a Red Mage. But I don't delude myself into believing that we can get through the adventure with just a silver tongue and swagger; that's the lot of the Bard and the Fighter.

I'm repeating bits of lore concerning the setting and how our class is viewed because the players never seem to get it through their heads what being a Red Mage actually entails.
We don't get to coast through adventures because we can do everything; we have to work hard at it because we're always going to be weaker than an equivalent level class. I like working towards success, because it makes the victories feel worthwhile and earned.

She clearly wasn't sure she was going to be the same. Then, although she had just hunched down, she stood right up again, her brow furrowed resolutely.

"The White Wizard gave me a Holy spell to learn from when I left the Temple. I'm going to learn it, so that I'll be able to be as brave as the rest of you. Although it is a level higher than even my strongest spell... I won't quit until I'm able to read the entire tome."

>>
>>25631664
>>25631759

You think of asking to borrow or use said tome. But you have not forgotten how they work. A magic tome is thick, all of it written in symbols known as 'the Voice'. Different schools of magic have different, unique scripts of the Voice. Although Red Mages have a 'jack-of-all-trades-master-of-none' reputation, learning a second Voice without a master is a most strenuous feat. It took you a year and a half to do so, in fact. Regardless, when reading a tome, the symbols glow as you say them inwardly, and fade to leave the paper bare. If one makes a misstep in reading the script, or breaks for even a moment, the spell is broken, the learning is a failure and the script reappears. The entire tome must be read in a continuous stream, the Voice oft written in a way that is intentionally misleading to guard the secrets of their craft. Full understanding of a spell can only be gained by reading the entire tome in a single sitting, which tends to take around two hours on a good day. And once the tome has been read, cover to cover, the script has disappeared entirely, and the tome becomes useless, full of blank pages. If you wish to learn Holy, you must master the tome in place of, and before, Ferra. Providing she'll let you get your hands on it.

>>25631788

(Not trying to be condescending, genuinely trying to be as light-handed in the matter as I can. I just think insulting one another can't lead to either of you finding some peaceable way of communicating. Apologise if you read it in that manner. Anyway, I'll not input on the matter any further.)

>once the tome has been read, cover to cover, the script has disappeared entirely, and the tome becomes useless, full of blank pages
Does creating tomes require special inks and training to do? Like, we can't just buy one White Magic spell book, have Ferra learn it, then have her write another tome and then have Cecil learn it?

>>25631991

Writing a Tome requires that one become a Scribe. They have no ability to cast spells, but rather, have spent their lives learning the Voice, often multiple schools of it, to transcribe it from practitioners. Spells have been known to be lost entirely because their discoverers or few users were unable or unwilling to find a Scribe to create a Tome of it. The Voice is a mysterious thing, a language never spoken aloud except inside the head. Only Scribes can tap into the thoughts of a caster to write it down, and only Mages can read it to cast it. Some say it is the language used for silent prayers. Most mages will call the notion ridiculous, white ones more gently so. When you mention doing your best to help, she nods.

"That's very kind of you, Cecil." That tiny curve of a smile appears again. "Before long I shall have a Holy ready to protect you next time you should encounter a 'squibble' of Malboro." Again she giggles.

Think we should check up on how Horry's holding up? Perhaps introduce him to the latest addition to the Warriors of Light?

I hope he can come along, and/or this Warrior of Light thing isn't required to become a badass.

Considering how lovestruck he is, wouldn't he prefer enlisting in the army and requesting to be put into his love's unit?
I won't say no if he stays with us, but I think she's going to die far away from him if he's not there with her.

"I'm certain your sword will help me many times," she agrees emphatically, her smile growing a touch wider, before she reins it in again.

Ferra responds to your request with an enthusiastic positive, leading you inside with a certain confidence not present in the rest of her actions so far. She is very clearly the kind of girl who responds very well to being given responsibility. You can only imagine how she will be when the gravity of being a Warrior of Light hits her.

After she leads you to the guest quarters, she bids you a good evening before slipping into her own room to study her tome for some hours, the vigour clear in her expression. Then you decide to visit the market of the town.

It's then that two spears cross before you, barring your path from the gate of the castle.

"Pardon, Ser, but Lady Olbessa's orders have been clear. Until you have received the king's audience, you have no leave to quit the castle. Remain inside the walls and be patient." The cold courtesy of the man sets a rigid wall between you, like the glaze over his eyes.

You are starting to feel less like a guest in the Castle and a little more like you felt whilst a bow-point some five days ago.

True. Perhaps he'll forge a legend of his own while Cecil is off with the rest the Warriors of Light.

(And that's it for tonight. Sorry to >>25632322, caught your suggestion a little late. I hope you've all enjoyed yourselves. Feel free to stop at the archive and vote if y'all wanna raise interest. Otherwise, I hope to see all of you come Wednesday, when I shall next be playing.)

"Is there someplace inside the castle where I can purchase supplies/arms/armor, like a Quartermaster of some sort?"
>>
>>25632529
See you Wednesday, then.

See how you explained the way that Tomes work, does this mean that Mages can't teach each other spells, or only Mages within their own type can teach each other?
Like White Mages can only teach other White Mages, Blacks only teach Blacks, and Reds have to get Tomes and can't teach each other?
>>
>>25632529

See you then, Sage. Thanks for running the quest!
>>
>>25632572

Only the most experienced Mages (i.e. Wizards) can directly teach spells. Otherwise, Mages can't teach one another. They can communicate it to a Scribe, a Scribe can make a tome of it and then that tome can be learned by another Mage. White Magic is written in the White Voice, Black Magic is written in the Black Voice and you can only read a Voice after you learn it, which takes a lot of time even with someone to teach you.

And thanks for playing! Y'all are making this quest go better than I had ever hoped.

The original Final Fantasy has the requirement of meeting Bahamut and retrieving the Rat Tail to become the next step in class. Will we have to do that here, or since there are already White and Black Wizards, is it simply a matter of getting XP and leveling up?
Speaking of XP and leveling up, how will you handle that? Did we get any XP from the fight with the bandits?
>>
>>25632789

Classes are fluid, but Wizard is a title of prestige, granted to those who learn a certain level of spell. As for XP and levelling, there are no numbers involved. If you train/fight, you will get better. If you learn magic and cast often, you will get better. Proficiencies and new abilities, spells all have specific ways of being learned. For example, if you wanted to use a magic staff, you could. You can read the Voice carved in them and that would activate the magic charge inside. You can use a sword because you've trained with one often enough. You would be dire with a hammer, however, because you haven't. It works like that.

Oh god it's FF 2

Anyway, I'm off for now. G'night all. Check your wardrobes for Tonberries before you go to sleep.
>>
>>25632919
So in order to be able to the next level of spells, we need to both use the spells we have extensively AND find/steal/purchase new spell tomes. After a certain number of uses/fights, we can learn the next level so long as we have the tomes?
>>
>>25632969
jesus christ how horrifying.
>>
>>25632969
OH hey there's a little green thing with a lantern in my closet, how worried should I be?

>>25632919
first non-bandit combat we need to just keep hitting ourselves.
