Unfortunately, due to some technical issues, we're going to have to do without the pastebin for the next couple of sessions, but at least we've still got VALKRIAN MERCS QUEST!

Archive: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Valkyrian%20Mercs%20Quest

Don't know what Valkyria Chronicles is? Check it out here! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valkyria_Chronicles

You are JAGER STURMFUHRER, leader of the fledgling mercenary company DEMONS OF RANDGRIZ. In addition to fighting Imps for money and vengeance, you have your own private mission to hunt down Karla, your former fiance who sided with the Imperials and destroyed your home.

You first arrived in the Federation nation of Albion to help defend it against a possible amphibious attack. However, your boots barely hit the deck before you were assigned a mission to break up a spy ring. However, through a chain of extraordinary events, you not only smashed the spy ring apart, but also managed to capture an Imperial u-boat (mostly) intact, and figh off an Imperial amphibious invasion by defeating their leader, Belkan Knight Sir Fleisher.

You've decided that it's now time to move on to greener (or at least more profitable) pastures. You and the Demons left Albion for the besieged nation of Ustio.

Your first mission went well enough, routing a platoon of Imperial soldiers threatening the city of Valais' supply lines. Then you destroyed an Imperial superheavy artillery battery, taking pressure off the city's beleaguered defenders and giving them a chance to counterattack. You also took care of a personal mission for Qyburn, and in return, he's given you a new and powerful (if only experimental) weapon! You also captured an Imperial sniper who you convinced to join your cause.

After some much needed R&R (though you don't feel rested at all!), you're now ready to take the fight to the Imperials again, and hopefully against the Indigo Heron.

After a fairly long drive, you find yourself in the small village of Venya, which is honestly nothing more than a pit stop on the way to the larger town of Solis. However, it serves as a good staging point to mount a defense against any potential breakthroughs. It sits in the middle of the main pass to Solis and is on the only road large enough to handle any large scale evacuation.

Fortunately, you're not alone. The Ustian 8th and 19th Infantry Companies are sitting on your left and right flanks respectively, and even Penbury has lent his fighters to support, sprinkling them along the mountain ridges to watch for Imperial scouts and harass potential advances from the high ground.

That leaves you in charge of defending your particular sector the line, which is predicted to be where the heaviest assaults will take place, of course. You're now regretting impressing Freyberg so much with your past actions. Though, at least he's not actively trying to get you killed like General Damon was known to do.

The imps love their heavy armour, even if they've got more elite mobile units. Theoretically they'd be using their armour to cover hte advance of their infantry.
Once we're inside the town its the otherway around, and I believe we've got the best advantage in the urban environment.

You decide to deploy your forces along the edge of the town. You want to engage the Imps as soon as you can. However, thinking ahead, you also prepare fallback positions in case you have to retreat into the town itself. If Imperial tanks had a serious weakness, it was urban combat.

Speaking of armor, Headcase naturally has hidden away Kilroy in a ruined barn, with good concealment and a sight line for side shots on the road. Julia's Fenrir, however, is much a much hardier tank, so it could afford to be out in the open...

She's a great tank and no doubt she'll score a few kills, but she's still a tank, once they're in the town they'll organise to make it mince.

Remember the core of imp infantry is the lancer.

Also its harder to organise a tank hunt once inside the town and under fire from infantry in buildings.

"Sorry about this, Julia, but you're gonna have to sit on the bench for this one." You say to your tanker. "Better that the Imps don't know we've got a heavy tank until it's too late."

"Ugh, fine." Julia pouts and puts Fenrir in reverse. Instead of taking position on the road like before, Julia repositions Fenrir to an alley just inside the town. Out of sight from the main road but with a good angle on the towns' entrance.

Everybody else makes the proper preparations, taking up defensive positions. Heloise fortifies the most intact buildings and erects some mines and obstacles. Your mortar team practices zeroing their artillery on preset distances. Alek stalks off to find a good hide spot.

You first check on your left flank, being held by the Ustian 8th. They're led by Captain Grazani. They're a bit understrength, which is worrying, but their morale in general is quite high and it appears they won't break and run at the first sign of trouble, which is good.

On your right, the 19th, led by a Captain Chamberlain, seems to be in good condition as well. Unlike the 8th, they're fresh and at full strength, and have had a bit of combat experience already. You honestly believe you've got nothing to worry about on this end.

"FIRE!" You yell.

You and Ramirez open up with your smgs at full auto.

Tarin, Brillant, and Heloise try to pick out individual targets with their rifles.

Sam and Isolde let off frag lances.

The second volley cuts down another three Imps. Caught in the open like this, they've got no hope of winning. One of them, most likely an officer, stands up and begins frantically waving at his men to retreat when his head explodes like a melon. Obviously Alek found his mark.

With their officer down, what would have been an orderly withdrawal suddenly turns into a rout and the remaining recon squad breaks and runs. The crew of the armored cars finally realize what's happening and begin firing their machine guns. However, at this range, and with your position, the best they can hope for is to suppress you.

"Headcase, will you do the honor?" You say.

"Sure thing, boss." Headcase replies happily. There's a distant boom as Kilroy's 76mm gun fires. At this range, and at a stationary target, there's no chance to miss. The rear most armored car explodes in flames.

Meanwhile, Sam, Isolde, and Alek take their shots against the remaining armored cars, while you call in a mortar strike to mop up the retreating infantry.

Isolde's lance manage to knock out one of the armored cars, but both Sam and Alek's shots miss their mark. The mortars begin falling as well, but the Imps are retreating so fast they're largely out of the killzone already, with only a couple of them getting knocked down by shrapnel injuries.

The remaining Imps then pile into the last armored car, which quickly reverses and moves to get away on the road. Headcase only has time for one shot.

"Will do, Captain." Penbury says.

In the distance, you can hear the chatter of distant gunfire, and the dull thump of an explosion.

"Problem taken care of." Penbury says.

"Good job."

You then check in on Grazani and Chamberlain. Chamberlain's men managed to demolish the recon unit sent their way. Grazani's men fired on the enemy in their sector and managed to drive them off before they could get too close to the town.

Well, that was good. That meant you wouldn't have to reposition Headcase. He'd actually taken quite a liking to his ambush spot.

It's another couple of hours of quiet before Penbury gets on the horn again.

"Another incoming column. It's a lot bigger than the last one. Tanks and APCs. Looks like a vanguard."

Headcase's shot strikes the lead tank in the side, punching through one side and out the other. It doesn't explode, but it's pretty clear its dead. Isolde's lance scores a glancing hit on an APC, causing it to veer off the road and get stuck in a ditch.

At this point, the tanks screech to a halt and begin firing at where they think Headcase is. Meanwhile, the APCs begin disgorging their troops. Four whole squads exit the vehicle and begin to spread out. Sporadic fire from the Ustian units on your flanks meets them, as well as some artillery.

They're still a ways off, well outside your ideal engagement range.

However, your return fire is more punishing. A number of Imps are wiped out from gunfire, and an excellent shot from Headcase wipes the remainder of them out.

"That looks like all of them." You sigh as Heloise administers ragnaid to your shoulder wound.

"For now." Isolde frowns. "Those were just scouting forces. The real attack will come now. "

A quick check in with Grazani and Chamberlain reveal that their losses were minimal as well. So far so good.

"Oh, uh, a Buzzbomb! Drop it on these coordinates!"

Now, you just had to keep those tanks in one place long enough for the buzzbomb to get here.

Sam and Isolde fire off their lances. Headcase, despite still falling back and not in an ideal position, fires as well. Your flanks also add their own firepower as the freshly reloaded Ustian artillery fires again.

Both Sam and Headcase score direct hits on two of the APCs, which were left exposed by the tanks' rapid retreat. Both vehicles explode in balls of fire, showing the surrounding area with shrapnel and body parts. Yeah.... those troops never had the chance to dismount...

"Let them go, Penbury. It's not worth exposing your position." You say.

You then take advantage of the lull to repair your fortifications, which have been greatly ruined by gunfire, lances, and tank cannons. You're wondering how the building is even still standing.

Grazani and Chamberlain's positions are still holding strong with no apparent problems.

Meanwhile, Heloise plants some mines around the tracked tank to act as a booby trap, and you capture the Imp soldiers in the APC Alek disabled.

"Captain." Penbury's voice crackles through the radio again. "There's another column coming. It's big. VERY big."

"How big are we talking about?"

"Twenty tanks. At least. And that's not the worst part."

"Don't leave me hanging here..."

We can offer her our armor. And she may not even want it. Or she might be proud enough to wear her own damaged equipment.
>>
Hmm...

Hey, a question. What does the Second in a duel do?

Wiki says that they'd ... basically arrange things and serve as a go-between..

BUT, there were some cases where seconds would also fight! Or (I think) the second would take over if the original croaked.

... Anyway. What I'm thinkin is (after we ask her to explain why) would it be possible, and worthwhile, to --

either ask Isolde to be our second, or
be Isolde's second ourselves.

Since she's been quite wounded and all. I wouldn't want her to go into a duel disadvantaged. But I also don't want to just lolno her request.
>>
>>25578082
Our armor is Jager-sized. It would probably only fit Erik.
>>
>>25578107
I wasn't really under the impression Jager was huge like that.
>>
>>25578018

What? All that's happened to it is the trauma plates taking some strain, that's it. They haven't even broken yet. Hell if it's that bad then she could borrow Sam's.
>>
>>25578093
>Since she's been quite wounded and all.

Bullshit, she has a gash that can be easily solved though some ragnaid and a bandage, I see no reason to refuse her request.
>>
>>25578134
I'd say yeah, A gash is one thing. But I believe jager actually got a proper shot in the arm? The why seems mostly a formality before giving the go ahead.
>>
>>25578107
I imagined the armor with removable plates more akin to a modern Kevlar vest. That kind of design is only slightly ingenious compared to the technology to produce easily replaceable bullet stopping armor plates.
>>
>>25578151
Jager got a round through the shoulder but Heloise Ragnaid'd it away, and we can ragnaid away Isolde's gash
>>
>>25578186
So from an IC perspective, Isolde is a tad more in a position to fight. I mean yeah Ragnaid is effective, but I'd imagine we'd still be sore and a bit stiff for a while.
>>
>>25578206

Adding to this, ragnaid did not magic away Elsa's bullet to the shoulder, it just made it bearable in the short term.
>>
On the other hand, Isolde's armor has degraded somewhat.

IIRC Merc Command does have armor degrade and lower if you take damage. So there's that.
>>
>>25578239

Oh boo hoo, she has some trauma plates cracked, whatever shall we do?
>>
>>25578253
Now now be nice, anyway if she is going to duel the night with their swords. They shouldn't be wearing armor anyway, gotta keep it fair.
>>
>>25577873
Aw yeah, you guys just won yourselves a reroll. You got 3 total now.

>>25577808
"Why exactly do you want to duel him so bad?" You ask.

"Remember how I told you how I was wrongfully disgraced? My own order has accused me of a crime which I never had a chance to defend myself against. Trial by combat is still legal in Belka, and there is no way Sir Heinrich can refuse or find a way around it."

"Are you sure about this? You took a few hits during that fight." You say, a bit concerned.

"Superficial, mostly." Isolde stands up. True enough, her armor is largely intact save for the ruined trauma plates and the healed up gash on her forehead. "I can still fight."

"Alright, but swap out your trauma plates for Sam's. I don't you at any sort of disadvantage."

"Thank you, sir."

"Come on, let's go."

So you and Isolde both stride out into the no man's land, now littered with bodies and wrecked vehicles. From the Imperial lines, you can see two armored figures approaching, no doubt Sir Heinrich himself and one of his officers.

"Lord Jager Sturmfuhrer, your reputation precedes you." Sir Heinrich makes a respectful bow. "Sir Fleisher has told me of the stories of your duel."

"Yeah, it was pretty exciting." You respond.

"Alas, that is not why I am here. I am here to offer you terms. Surrender now, and I will not have to bring the full force of my army on you. I will even let you retreat unmolested, as long as you let me pass."

"And let you bail out an entire Imperial army? I don't think so." You shake your head. "I think, you're not so certain you can break our defense, which is why you bothered coming all the way out here."

"Then it seems we have no choice." Sir Heinrich says sadly.

"Not so fast." Isolde finally steps forward. "It's been a long time, Sir Heinrich."

"Reinhardt!" Sir Heinrich gasps. "What are you doing here?"

(cont)
>>
>>25578274
"To fight for my honor, of course." Isolde says, standing right in front of Heinrich. "I have been accused of treason against Belka, and have not yet been given opportunity to defend myself. I demand a trial by combat."

You can tell Sir Heinrich obviously wasn't expecting this, as he shifts around nervously.

"Fine, your conditions?"

"If I win, you will pull your forces back and leave Ustio forever. You will return to Belka, and ensure that the records state I acted honorably and fairly before my exile. I do not expect reinstatement, only the truth."

"Those are mighty large demands."

"Of course, if I lose, then we will pull back our forces and I will allow you to arrest me and take me back to Belka for proper punishment." Isolde says without breaking a sweat. "Are those terms acceptable?"

"Yes." Heinrich nods. "Weapons?"

"Sabers, of course."

>ASSUMING CONTROL

You are Isolde Reinhardt, and right now you are in the duel of your life, probably in more ways than one.

Your opponent is Sir Heinrich, the Indigo Heron. You know for a fact that Heinrich does not really like direct confrontation, preferring to be diplomatic or cunning, meaning his dueling skill wouldn't be as sharp as many other knights you know.

You both ready your stances, and glance at Jager. He gets the clue and begins counting down.

The final seconds of the duel are a made flurry of parries and blocks. Both Isolde and Sir Heinrich inflict a few more minor wounds on each other, but Heinrich is now the clear the loser, as he starts running out of steam from his wounds.

"I-I yield." Heinrich gasps as he falls to his knees. "The victory is yours."

"You fought well, Sir Heinrich." Isolde says, reaching a hand out to him. "But it's clear you've been skimping on your practice sessions."

"That I have." Heinrich laughs before sighing. "I will fulfill my end of the deal. I will return to Belka and ensure your reputation will be treated with the respect it deserves."

"Please, give my regards to the Grand Master, as well." Isolde says.

"It will be done."

"Do you know of the attack on the Sturmfuhrers? My family? Why was Karla in charge? Who ordered it?"

"Ahhh, that." Sir Heinrich frowns. "I don't know the full details, but I heard that it was a test of loyalty. There are many dark rumors about the Princess, after all, especially among the Empire."

"Like what?"

"That she's a Gallia sympathizer, for one." Sir Heinrich sighs. "But you'll have to ask her yourself if you ever come across her."

"On that note." You narrow your eyes. "Next time you see the Princess, tell her Jager Sturmfuhrer says hello."

You consider punching Sir Heinrich, for completeness' sake, but decide against it. The poor man has gone through enough punishment already.

Sir Heinrich limps away back to his tank, where he is promptly treated for his wounds. Climbing back in his vehicle, he takes one last look at you and Isolde and gives a solemn salute. You both return the salute and Sir Heinrich's column departs.

And so ended the legend of the Indigo Heron.

"Thank you, Captain." Isolde says. "For letting me fight for my honor."

"Oh, it was nothing-" You then realize that for the first time ever, you see Isolde crying.

You put a reassuring hand on Isolde's shoulder, letting her know that she's not alone without having to ruin the moment for words. You wait for a few long minutes until she finally gets it all out of her system.

"I-I'm sorry about that. That was highly unprofessional. Knights and soldiers should never cry openly like that." Isolde sniffs.

"Don't be sorry." You sigh. "I could never trust a person who can't or won't cry when they need to."

Isolde nods but stays silent. You both walk back to the town, where your squad, and now the Ustians, were waiting. You tell them all the good news and they begin cheering.

"Hold it up there, we may have defeated the Heron, but the Imps are still out here." You warn. "Elizabeth, get on the horn and let Freyberg know the Indigo Heron is no longer a problem."

"Got it, sir."

"Everybody else, let's get this mess cleaned up."

----

Meanwhile, in Belka, Sir Erik Schnee approaches the Grand Master's chambers with great reluctance. Again, he had to come and bear bad news to the Princess.

"Ah, Erik! Do you have any news from Sir Heinrich?" Karla asks happily as she sharpens her saber.

"Well..." Erik bites his lip. "Sir Heinrich was defeated in the field of battle by Sir Reinhardt. He was forced to abandon the Ustian campaign."

"Isolde? What was she doing in Ustio?" Karla frowns, obviously surprised by this turn of events.

"Apparently, she was with that Jager Sturmfuhrer." Erik scowls. "Just with Sir Fleisher in Albion, Sir Heinrich's withdrawal has put the entire Ustian campaign in shambles. The Empire is in an uproar. They're saying that Belkan Knights are a liability now."

"Such short memories." Karla sighs. "They've already forgotten the countless victories and sacrifices we have given them in the past?"

"Apparently." Erik shakes his head. "Apparently, Imperial High Command is beginning to withdraw our knights or relieving them of command positions, to prevent any more 'unexpected withdrawals'."

Hmmm...

You know, I'm not sure if that would be an ass-pull, or if it would make even more sense!

Because it might give more of a justification/explanation as to why the Crown Princess of Belka was going to marry a Gallian noble.

If the Sturmfuhrer lineage had Valkyrur blood, it might help justify why a Belkan Princess was engaged to a scion of that line.
