Time for part 3 of the crusader quest gents!

You are Jacques Fontaine, a French Knight who travelled to the Holy Land with King Philip II of France and Richard I of England. You took the walls of Acre from the Saracens and you (just barely) survived the Battle of Arsuf, where you rescued a group of crusaders and an Arab from bandits.

These men then joined your party:
>Fulko de Lorche, a Teutonic Knight
>Thomas Marshal, an English Knight
>Imad al-Isfahani, an Arabic scholar
>and Will, of England.

After heading to Jaffa to regroup with the crusader army, you uncovered an English plot to assassinate the King of Jerusalem! Which you promptly ignored in favour of the status quo.
Then, after failing one of the most crucial spot-checks in history, you were ambushed by saracens and the entire crusader army was captured, King Richard the Lionheart (along with many other nobles) was killed and you were at the mercy of Saladin.
>>
>>25546030
It's a bit fuckin' early.
>>
>>25546030
It was here you discovered that your doctor, Imad, was in fact Saladin's personal scholar, and was willing to spare you and your men provided you all left the Holy Land and returned to wherever you came from.

Not wanting to go home (maybe your wife is super ugly) you attempt right then and there to end Imad's life when Sir Thomas Marshal, ahead of an army of a thousand Templar Knights turn up to get stabby.

And this is where you are now.

Your stats are:
>Str: 76
>Agl:65
>Stl:79
>Per:82
>Char:54
and the rules are you roll a d100, and if it lies below your stat score (with modifiers) then its a successful roll.

You currently have nothing but a looted sword and an arrow in your leg, but that's not likely to matter right now.
>>
>>25546093
Is it? I suppose I could post the thread and wait a few hours for people.

I mean, it's 10am where I am but it's any time you want depending where you are in the world.

The Templar Knights begin their charge, bearing down on the Muslim army before any of them even have a chance to turn around. You take the opportunity to plunge your sword into Imad’s chest before falling to the ground due to the pain in your leg.

The battle is over in just a few moments. With the Saracens caught off guard and already engaged from the inside of the camp, they flee the field , where many are cut down by the prisoned crusaders who chase them.

Once the saracens are gone from the field, Marshal rides up to your group.

“A bit late to the party aren’t we?” asks Baldwin.
“You know me, always have to make an entrance,” laughs Marshal.

“So you’re a Templar then,” you say obviously.

Marshal laughs again. Baldwin pipes up.
“Not just any Templar,” he says. “With the death of Robert de Sable last night, he is now the Grand Master of the Knights of the Temple of Solomon.”

Marshal bows with a grin on his face.

“All right then,” you say, before succumbing to the pain falling unscious.

A few weeks pass before your leg is fit to move again. In the meantime you and your party have been moved to Acre accompanied by Marshal and the Templars. Since the battle of Jaffa, Saladin signed a treaty with Marshal, who was acting on behalf of the crusaders, stating that Jerusalem will remain under Ayyubid control, but all pilgrims of any faith will be allowed free passage to the Holy City. Many men seem content with the treaty, many do not, but such is the way of the world.

Marshal approaches you in your chambers.

“There is a boat outside leaving for France,” he says. “The crusade is done, but I remain to keep the peace and guard pilgrims from any rogue Saracens who dislike the treaty.”

You
>o to the boat, ready to return to France
>offer to remain in the Holy Land, join the Templars and assist him

So that's 2 votes for staying, 1 for France? Are we staying as a Templar or other?

Hey, I wanted a hobble charge at Saladin's camp.

You look out the window to the docks.

“There is nothing left for me in France now. I cam to the Holy Land with a purpose, and I do not yet believe that purpose is fulfilled.”

“I understand,” says Marshal. “The doors to the Temple are open to you, brother, should you wish to join our order.”

“The same goes with the hospital,” says Baldwin, entering the room. “Fulko and Will, however, are leaving for home. With Richard’s death there is much contention over English lands on the continent, and Will wishes to return before things escalate. Fulko… Well, honestly, I don’t know. I think the only thing he ever said to me was ‘I’ll cave your head in if you touch my cross.’”

“Sounds familiar,” you laugh.

You

You head to the docks to say farewell. You’ve known these men for over a year now, but you could never truly call them friends. Brothers, yes, but not really more.

You approach them as they board the French vessel.

“Aha,” says Will, “decided to go home as well then?”
“No,” you say, “I intend to remain here with the Knight’s Hospitaller. I have come to bid you farewell.”
Will smiles, “I wish you the best of luck with them, brother.” You thank him.
Fulko looks at you. “I don’t think they’re quite as liberal with looting as the French are,” he grunts. He then cracks a grin and graps your hand. “I have a feeling we’ll be back here eventually, so leave some Saracens for us.”

And with that, your party is disbanded. You go back to Baldwin.
“I have said my farewells. I wish to join the Knights of St. John.”

“Very good!” he grins. “To Jerusalem!”

You pack up what few belongings you have left, and are about to leave when you spot your squire sitting in that broken helmet you gave him.

You
>try to get him to come with you
>leave what wealth you have left to him and tell him to go home (you’ll have to give it up as a Brother-Knight anyway)

You approach your squire and drop the bag of gear off at his feet.

“You’ve been a good squire kid. I’m no longer returning to France, however, I am staying to join the Hospitaller. It’s up to you where you go from here.”
He doesn’t even hesitate. “I miss home, Sir Jacques.”
“I thought you might,” you smile.
After rummaging around for a while in your bag, you find some paper and ink and begin to scrawl a message. After it’s done, you seal it, hand it to the boy and take the helmet from his head.

“Hand this to my chamberlain when you get back to France, and he’ll see you’re well paid. The farm your family works will now belong to you, take good care of them. All of this,” you point to your old gear and loot, “is yours. Sell it or keep it if you like.”

“Thank you, Sir Jacques,” he says hurriedly. He bows, gathers up your things and runs down to the docks.

When you get back to Baldwin he says “That kid was practically in tears, what did you say to him?”
“That he could go home.”
“Ah. And the helmet?”
“To remind me of Arsuf, to remind me of that failure.”

“You mean to remind you to try and stay on your horse?” he laughs.
You punch him on the arm, grinning. “Let’s get going then.”

The road from Acre to Jerusalem is long and hot, and to keep your horses from succumbing to the heat you cannot work them hard. It takes nearly a week to get there, but you finally arrive at the gates of the majestic city.

Baldwin turns to you, “You were willing to die, and willing to kill, for this city, yet you hadn’t even seen it had you?”

You shake your head.

“I thought not. What now? We can head straight for the Hospital or is there something you want to do first?”

>Where to lads? Here’s a map of Jerusalem from the era.

Oh yeah, we're hospibro's.
See where Jesus died then.

“Where is it that Christ was crucified?” you ask Baldwin.

Baldwin leads you down the streets of Jerusalem, lined with hundreds of pilgrims who have taken up the chance while there is some peace in the city, towards the Church of the Holy Sepulchre atop Golgotha. The church is largely empty; most of the pilgrims are muslim, as word has not yet reached christendom of the peace, and you find yourself alone kneeling at the altar.

You spend quite some time in reflection and prayer, asking forgiveness for the lives you have taken and protection for the lives you have saved.
Eventually, you rise to your feet and approach Baldwin, who is sitting on a pew.

“Are you ready to go?”

>”Not quite yet, I want to visit the….”
>Yes, let us go
>>
>>25547127
To the Hospital!
>>
>>25547144
“Yes, let us go.”

Baldwin leads the way again, away from the Sepulchre and down towards the Hospital of the Knights of St. John.

You enter the front doors to a sight of dozens of bed, lined with wounded and sick muslims and christians alike. Some you recognise and men you have fought with and against in your previous battles, but you pay them no mind and follow Baldwin to a tall, grey man bandaging a pilgrims shoulder.
Once the wound is dealt with he turns to the pair of you.

“Carreo!? I’ve not seen you since Arsuf, we thought you would dead!”
“Indeed I would’ve been Grand Master,” says Baldwin, “had it not been for this young Frenchman here. He wishes to join the order?”

He looks you up and down. “He does, does he? You reckon we should let him in?” Baldwin nods, and the man grins. “That’s good enough for me!
“Now, you’re going to have to give up all of your worldly wealth,” he begins.
“I have nothing but the helmet on my head and the clothes on my back,” you volunteer.
“Indeed,” says the Grand Master. “Take him to the church, I’ll be over shortly.”

Baldwin leads you over to the adjacent church of St. John and a tub of water is brought in, along with a white robe.

“Clean up,” he says, “and we’ll get to knighting you.”

Baldwin leaves the room and you wash the sand and grime from your body. It take a lot of time and effort, but you eventually manage to reveal your skin to the world.

You climb from the tub and don the robe, and after a short wait two chaplains come and take the tub away. Their departure is followed by Baldwin and a small group of brother knights and sergeants taking seat around you.

The Grand Master stands before you.

“Kneel,” he says, and you do so. “Repeat after me.”
You repeat the following oath as he dictates it to you:
“Upon the True Faith of a Christian, may God witness that I hereby vow and dedicate myself as a servant of Christ and the Poor, the first qualification of a True Knight.
I promise to be faithful and loyal to Christ and to be guided by the ideals of the Sovereign Order of St John of Jerusalem: to do everything in my power to contribute to its Glory, Protection, Prosperity, Support and Utility: to combat everything prejudicial to its well-being: never to act contrary to its Dignity, but to conduct myself always as a true Knight of Christ: a good Christian and a person of Honour.
Believing that Christ will grant me a special token of his favour, I therefore, in all Humility, Charity, and Respect agree to join with every sincere and Godly Christian of whatever Church, to bring about by prayer and deed the salvation of the Christian World by helping to promote a lasting Christian Unity.
I will adorn my Knighthood with true Charity, the mother and solid foundation of all virtues.
I will wear on my person the Christian Maltese Cross of eight points, to constantly remind me of my religious vow of always bearing in my heart the Cross of Jesus Christ, adorned with the virtues that attend it.
So help me God.”

The Grand Master continues.
“Then I, Garnier de Nablus, name you Sir Jacques Fontaine, Brother-Knight of the Order of St John.”

A few prayers are said and Knights and Sergeants all leave, leaving you with Baldwin.

“Right, may as well jump straight in!” he says happily. “I’ll take you to the armoury.”

You head off to the read of the hospital where you find a group of knights practicing in small yard, and an armoury in the corner.

“I know you said you wanted to keep the helmet,” says Baldwin, “but you can’t be fighting in those robes now.” and he pulls open a doorway and lays two sets of armour and a range of weapons infront of you.

“First one’s on me,” he grins.

In front of you are two sets of armour
>light chainmail with a cloth surcoat (bonus to armour, small penalty to agility)
>heavy chainmail with a plated-metal surcoat (large armour bonus, large agility penalty)

You immeadiately pick up the heavy armour.
“Thought you’d go for that,” says Baldwin, and the armourer hobbles over and begins making adjustments to fasten the mail to you correctly.

“Fit’s perfectly,” you say.

“Of course it does,” grunts the armourer, who then walks off to carry on with whatever it is he was doing before.

“And a weapon?” asks Baldwin.

You pick up the morning star and a shield. “I’ve always wanted one of these,” you think aloud.
Baldwin then hands you a short sword and dagger, which you fasten to your belt. “Always good to have a spare,” he says, before clearing up.

“Right, time to meet the brothers!”

You head over to the training yard and two knights that were previously fightinglower their weapons and raise their visors.

“This is Mathieu d’Aquitaine,” says Baldwin, pointing to a large, ginger haired knight wielding a sword and shield. The knight bows his head to you. “And this is Bartholomew of Cyprus,” he says, indicating the short tanned man leaning on a halberd. He then looks to you.
“Get stuck in then!”

Mathieu drops his visor and readies his sword, and you have just enough time to raise your shield before it hits you. The thud resounds through your entire left side.

You don’t even give him a chance to raise his halberd before running straight at the guy. He looks perplexed as you drop your mace and shield to the floor which gives you the opportunity to wrap your arms around his waste and fling him to the ground.
You quickly draw your dagger and place it under his chin.

The Knight yields and you both rise to your feet.

“A bit unconventional, I must say” he says, “but it worked nontheless.”

“Indeed…” says Mathieu, staggering to his feet. “You’re good enough to me.”

Baldwin gives a quick clap before speaking to you all.

“Right then Brothers, there are a group of Muslim Turks who have finished their pilgrimage today, and want safe passage to Acre where they can sail home,” he looks at you with a grin. “Judging from the fact you were completely useless when I was injured, you’d be wasted in the hospital. While Mathieu and Barty head for the stables you hang back to speak with Baldwin.

“Why are we protecting Muslims?” you ask. “Surely their own kind can defend them?”

“Not all Muslims are saracens, Brother Jacques,” Baldwin replies. “These men are simple folk who wish to pray to their God as much as we do ours, and it is our duty to defend them.
“Besides,” he continues, “Saladin’s peace relies on the Muslims not being butchered in the Holy Land. We want to keep that peace.”

You go to your horse, Balian, and ready him for the ride. Mathieu and Barty are already mounted, and from the look of them they have no qualms with escorting Muslims across the desert.
A small group of seargents also come with you, and you meet the Muslim caravan at the David’s Gate. There are around 20 of them, 5 of which are armed to the teeth. Baldwin approaches two of the armed men and begins a conversation in Arabic, before returning to you. Your party consists of

>You
>Baldwin
>Mathieu
>Barty
>5 Hospibro sergeants
>5 Muslim Saracens

As you leave, you ride up alongside Baldwin. “You know Arabic?” you ask.
“Of course I know Arabic,” he laughs, “you don’t get born in the Levant without learning the language.”
“And what of those two up there?”
“Those are brothers, Nasir and Nazeem. They do what we do, guard pilgrims.”
Suddenly the stereotypes don’t seem so clear. You push the thought aside, however, and continue the journey.

The first two days are uneventful. On the third, however, something seems to be scaring the horses.

There are only 8 or so Templars, so you order the knights to dismount and form a line with the sergeants between the charging knights and the caravan.

You then send the Saracens off to the flanks, who start circling the Templars and firing arrows into the formation, killing two of them.

The mounted Templar approaches you and you ready yourself. At the very last second you spin out of the way and fling your mace at the rider, which connects flatly with his face. The horse panicks and flees, while you pick the mace back from the cave where the Templar’s face used to be.

You look around and see not everyone was so lucky. Only one of the sergeants is still on his feet, trying to stab the Templar with his spear.

Barty is doing the same with another Templar.

Mathieu has killed a horse and is fighting a Templar on foot, 1 vs 1.

Baldwin has been knocked down and two of the Templars are continuing towards the caravan, chased by the Saracens on horseback, but you’re not sure they’ll reach in time.

You charge Balian into one of the Templar’s horses, which knocks him to the ground. You quickly turn to the second and swing away. The mace connects with a sickening crunch and the knight’s head twists into an ungodly angle. He teeters on his horse for a moment before going limp and slowly slumping into the sand.

The second Templar gets to his fee but before he can do anything the Saracens are on him, and drops his weapon and yields.

You look around to see that all of the other Templars are dead, but so are all of your sergeants. The caravan is untouched.
Baldwin is lifted to his feet by Mathieu and stumbles towards you. He is once again wounded.

You turn to the caravan.

“Dig a hole,” you command them. They catch on quickly and dig a man sized hole in the ground which the Templar is promplty dumped into. The sand is then piled back around him so only his head remains above ground.

“This road is travelled fairly often,” you say, kneeling in front of him, “so you should serve as an example to others not to disturb the peace.
”What’s your name, Sir Knight?” you ask bitterly.
“Sir Reric de Cortina” he spits at you.
You go to stand, but stop yourself.
“Oh, and I’ll be taking this,” you say, drawing your dagger.

The scream echoes throughout the desert, and you toss his eye into the sand next to him.

“That was exceptionally brutal,” says Baldwin, worriedly.

“You yourself said how important it was that the peace is kept,” you reply. “What better way than to set examples of those who refuse to.”

“I suppose…” he says, but after that none of the Brother Knights will look you in the eye.
The Saracens look pretty pleased about it though.

The remainder of the journey passes smoothly, and the caravan boards its ship without incident. The Saracens accept a small amount of money from the Caravaneers, but as a Brother-Knight you cannot, so you spend the night in a small Chapel.
Before you leave the next morning, the Saracens approach you at the gates to speak to Baldwin, who then turns to you.

“He says he likes that trick you did with the eye,” Baldwin says, not sure whether to laugh or cringe.

You reply with

Baldwin translates and the two laugh. One of them speaks in broken English.

“All right then, we’ll come.”

Your party, with the addition of Nasir and Nazeem (the other saracens remained at Acre) heads back to Jerusalem. As you pass the place where you buried the Templar you notice he is missing, and you feel rather uneasy.
You ignore this though, and the party reaches David’s Gate without incident.

Before you can cross into the city however, you are confronted by a group of Templars and Knights bearing the sigil of the Kingdom of Jerusalem.

You rest your head and go to sleep, with faith that with the truth on your side God will help you prevail.

The next morning you are awoken by the guards, who drag you and your party before the Queen of Jerusalem, Isaballa I.

In the courtroom are a few groups of people:
>the Queen and her guards
>a small group of christian pilgrims
>Thomas Marshal, Grand Master of the Templars and some Templar Knights
>Reric One-Eye
>your party
>GM of the Hospitallers
and the walls are lined with Templars and Hospitallers in even number.

A chamberlain steps forward from aside the Queen.
“Sir Reric de Cortina, please give your testimony.”

The one eyed Templar reels off a tale of falsehoods where he claims to have been patrolling the roads looking for unruly saracens. There he claims to have been assaulted by you and your party, along with the caravan which he claims was fully armed and butchered his men, before you buried him neck deep in sand and cut out his eye.

You interrupt Reric.

“He speaks only falsehoods, my lords! The caravan was made entirely of pilgrims, the only men armed were me and my brothers who were assigned to guard them!”
The chamberlain is about to shoot you down when Grand Master Garnier steps forward.
“This much is true, I and my Brothers will attest to this. There were many in the marketplace who saw them depart as well who will verify the nature of the Muslims involved”

The chamberlain thinks for a moment and turns to some guards. “Fetch some of the marketmen and bring them here for testimony.”

A few minutes pass and the guards return with three men, all of which testify that the caravan was infact made up of pilgrims as you say.

“Very well,” says the chamberlain. He then calls forth the Christian pilgrims. One of them steps forward and then confirms that they found a number of dead Hospitallers and Templars, with Reric buried in the sand with one eye. They dug him out and bandaged his face before bringing him back to Jerusalem.

Curses are flung between the orders in the room, but order is quickly restored by the Grand Masters.
The chamberlain turns to you.
“What have you to say about this then?” he asks.

The Queen glares at you for a few moments before speaking.

“You speak true, Knight, even if you speak out of turn. I am God’s woman, and would not ask anyone to break a vow.”
She returns to her seat. “This is a farce, all of you leave.”

You lower your head and offer your apologies, but he’s already storming off down the road.

You turn to your party and

The other Brothers head back to treat Baldwin’s wounds. He’s still not 100% but he should be fine, so you don’t worry yourself.
The Muslim brothers also decide they’ve had enough of your shit for one day, and have gone to the tavern to get drunk.

Many hours are spent wandering the streets, and eventually darkness falls. You decide it’s time to get back when your path is blocked by three men. They wear plain clothes and are Arabic in nature, but you already see blades flashing in the waning sun.

You decide it best not to chase after the assassin, for all you know it could be a trap. You quickly rush back to the hospital and let your Brother-Knights know what happened.
You lead them back to the scene where you find that the corpses of the two hashashin and the boy have all been removed, and the blood hastily cleaned up as if someone threw a bucket of water over the area.

With little evidence to corroborate your story there is nothing that can be done about it now, and a few of the brothers look at you like a madman despite the obvious evidence of some kind of fight.

Guess cutting out people’s eyes doesn’t make you look sane.

You return to the hospital and turn in, though the night is sleepless and you find yourself staring at the doorway with dagger in hand.

>All right guys, I’m going to leave it there for now, I need to sort my stuff out to move house. I might be back on in a few hours though. I’ve already archived the thread.
