Shadow Quest - Early Morning Edition!

I'll be running on and off all day. First break is in less than an hour, unfortunately. I've been assigned to pick up a random family member at 11:15.

---------------------
---------------------

You are a creature of darkness and shadows. Stripped of your memory, you seek to learn your true nature and find your place in the world.

Recent Events Summary:

While pretending to be the summoned creature of the Archmage Yi Fang, you were captured by the Ring City. The angel Michael, one of the greatest healers in the world, is responsible for your 'examination'. But a curse he received from a Demon Lord twisted his mind into that of a psychotic madman - and you were at his mercy.

Auriel was working with him to restore her powers. You communciated with her telepathically, begging her for help and informing her of Michael's insanity. Before she acted, however, you managed to burst free of your cage and attack and consume Michael.

You snuck into the city sewers and used them to access the underground complex holding the souls of many Shadow and Spirit mages captive. You destroyed the magic holding them in place - and the suddenly-freed slaves immediately turned on their masters, throwing the city into chaos.

Intent on helping them escape, you rushed to the Airship Noiralev to consume its core and use its power, but you ran into Auriel and Flint in the engine room. They explained that they'd found the remains of one of Michael's victims. That - combined with Flint's encouragement, and her own experiences - has led her to put her trust in you.

In one swoop, she took command of the ship, turned its crew against Sandalphon's despotism, and used it as a rallying point for the embattled shadow mages huddled inside the collapsing city.

Meanwhile, you used your powers to overclock the airship's dynamo, directing its firepower and shields far beyond their normal abilities - but even still, you were overwhelmed, and your efforts destroyed the dynamo in the process. Before the airship was destroyed, you were able to charge its jump drive and teleport to safety.

The battle has rendered the Noiralev useless, but you managed to safely guide the craft to one of many stone plataeus in the Shiprakers, an isolated and desolate region where Tarun Gakth meets the sea. You've convinced your fellows that the best place to set up something more permanent for your renegades and refugees is in the Great Forest. The spirit mages, led by Hamil, are currently putting together a mass teleport spell to bring you there.

You've started scouting the surroundings, hoping to find some trace of Steward or his proclaimed home, City 001. But finding something in the barren waste has proven harder than you first suspected.

After ensuring that Ila is a trustworthy leader of your new group, you spoke with Sir Flint - and you both agreed it was time to see the archmage, Yi Fang. You flew with him to the mighty fortress of Archon, and met with the mage in person.

Abigail is already twisted into a complex political situation. Fang requires his own trustworthy leader to succeed his position - and he sees Abigail as that leader. But unless she performs, her admission to the Archonium - a requirement for any could-be councilor or archmage - is in question. Fang sees you as the "summon" that will ensure none question her abilities.

>Last time...

<Even if she were able to reach admission into the Archonium, she will be years away before she is ready to assume the responsibilities that come with the position of a council seat, let alone yours as Archmage. Could that be called into question?>

Fang closes his eyes. For a moment, he says nothing, and then he opens his mouth to speak. "...in short, no."

<In short?>

"If she graduates from the Archonium, it won't be a question," he says.

<...I could grant her some of my own power,> you say hesitantly.

"What do you mean?"

<If you have a shadow mana pool, I believe I could imbue her with extra strength,> you clarify. <Something extra to protect her.>

Fang nods. "As long as it's safe enough. Such a mana pool exists not far within the fortress proper."

<I need only some excess energy,> you say. <Do you have any spare magical artifacts I could consume for the task?>

Fang smiles his evil smile. "I have a better idea." He walks around the desk, and taps one of the floating baubles near the bookshelf. An orange screen crackles to life in front of him - a sort of flat image that holds the days arranged into regular blocks.

"What is that?" Flint asks you in a whisper.

<It seems to count days,> you note.

"It's called a calender, you plebeians," Fang says, half-sighing. He runs his finger along its breadth. "Perfect timing. She's in her summoning class right now. Her first practical." He looks at you. "Two floors below us. Don't get detected on the way."

>con't
>>
<...wait a minute,> you say. <I haven't agreed to anything yet.>

"I see," Fang says. "So you're just going to let a 9-year old whip up a summon, then? Yes, I can't see any problems with that."

"For the sake of the Light, man," Flint says, "she's your flesh and blood!"

"And it is for that reason I sit here and do nothing!" Fang snaps. "Or should I condemn her as a cripple, incapable of moving without my help?"

"You're just pressuring Shadow into doing your work for you," Flint says smugly.

Fang makes a face. You're surprised - it seems he was caught. "...well...that's not untrue. But how would it look if the archmage of the land went down into a novice's classroom specifically to help one student? She already has a bodyguard just outside the door."

Flint licks his lips. "...well..."

Fang needles his fingers. "Shadow. Go down there. Stay hidden. When she attempts a summon...no matter the result, take its place. I will instruct you from there."

A list of ongoing tasks of varying importance, as decided on in earlier threads, sorted to groups by relation:

Personal:
>Make sure Abigail is okay with Yi Fang
>Murder Yi Fang if she isn’t
>Deal with Flint's parasite (Yi Fang promised to)
>Help Yi Fang in finding the Staff of the Winds

Elemental:
>Free Geb, make a new friend (Have a fallback solution - trap again, CONSUME, what?)
>Get all keys, find out what the Spirit thing is

Political/Leaders:
>Find out situation in Kelvere, is the Duke really dead?
>Find out what else the Duke was hiding from us
>Get information on Sandalphon’s movements and the Light empire’s situation
>Get in contact with Steward/City 001
>Find out what's up with the Black Lady. Could she be trusted?
>Get Obis his throne back
>Ask the Elven Queen some very pointed questions about our memories

Misc/Faction:
>Find Joey
>Fortify our current position
>Research how Servant works, make sure it won't cause unrest among people
>Research Dynamos
>Assure peaceful co-existence of differently aligned mages

Potential new tasks:
>End Skysever (we have read that the spell is physically located somewhere and visible, yet hard to access)
>Deal with Legion
>Explore, this world feels small
>Find more fragments of Shadow
>Find the other Elementals
>Convince Flint to become the leader of his people, after the parasite has been dealt with
>Find what happened to the Dwarves
>Find out about the Presence we felt when using Focus in the Shadow temple underneath Tarun Gakt

Remember all of these have direct and indirect solutions. For instance, the keys: We could just go in and take them by storm, sneaking around and killing those who spot us, but do we want that? Would it help upkeep our image as a good-intending catalystic force, or would we appear as self-righteous destroyers? Atlantis is believed to have a key. Too bad for us, their water supply relies on it.
>>
>>25506923
>Neck too long and thick.
>Hands too small.
>Left foot shaped weird.
>Hair looks like a cowl.
>Shadow is heavy as fuck. No way Abby could do that.

Abigail's blonde, silly.

--------------------
--------------------

<...alright, Fang. But you'd better keep your word.>

"I always keep my word," Fang says. "Don't exit the tower; head straight down. Two levels below ground. Go left, and then right. Three doors down."

You fly out of the room and sprint down the spiral staircase leading up the archmage's tower. The faster you move, you figure, the less chance of detection.

The tower quickly transitions from warm wood and carpets to stone halls. Lines of magic pulse through the building. Little globes of gold and orange light keep everything well-lit. It isn't long before you see a familiar lich loitering outside a classroom door up ahead.

<Adavan.>

The man jumps. "...Shadow?!" Adavan cocks his head for a moment, as if listening to something. He squints, then nods. "...Fang just explained. Ok."

<Can you hear me?> comes Fang's voice.

<...yes?> you say into your head.

<Good. Once you're inside the classroom, I'll be unable to contact you. Classrooms are heavily enchanted to prevent spying from external forces. Now. The teacher herself is a graduate of the archonium - and one of the people that could potentially take a council seat. It was her family's assassination attempt that I thwarted this morning. If we're not careful, the follow-up could happen shortly. Slip into the classroom and get close to Abigail. Once you're there...> It's almost like you can feel the mental shrug. <Accidents happen. Eat an offending student, or the teacher herself, if the opportunity arises.>

<Ok. What if I'm detected?>

<You'd better not be.>

The connection to Fang ends.

You edge up to the classroom door.

What do you do?

>Ink in under the door and slither over to Abigail
>ask Adavan something
>some other strategy

You turn to Ink and slip under the door.

The classroom is lined with wide tables, most with inkwells built into them. There's a bookshelf on one wall. Orange and white tapestries reduce the impact of the blank slate walls.

A stone gargoyle sits near the door, still and silent. You feel its orange eyes flick across you...but then its gaze returns to the door.

The teacher, a woman of about thirty, is using chalk to draw some complicated symbol on a slate board at the top of the classroom. With the students focused on hurriedly copying the spell as exactly as possible, it's easy for you to worm your way between the tables without being spotted. The clack of chalk and the scribble of pens on paper follows you through the room.

Abigail is seated in the back corner, at an older looking desk. She's cleaner than you've ever seen her, and wearing a orange and white dress. Her hair is tied up in a neat bun, held in place by a long, ornate needle. An orange crystal glimmers at the end of it.

It doesn't have an inkwell, but she doesn't need it. Her paper isn't paper at all - but a soft, glowing screen resting above a small orange square. She draws in the screen with her finger. Another motion 'moves' the device to a fresh page. Perhaps a gift from her uncle?

She flips through a few pages. You see a distorted drawing of Fang in his armor, and then a doodle of Flint holding a sword...and...a blob with eyes and arms. A cartoon Abigail walks between them with her hair bound up in ponytails.

She finds a fresh page and starts drawing the spell on the board. She frowns, then keeps going.

What do you do?

>>
>>25507228
Hide for now

>>25507249
We need it to free Geb. I just updated this to reflect that we now share that goal with Yi Fang. The four keys would be used to free the Spirit elemental, but gaining access to those keys was deemed too slow so we decided to roll with Yi Fang, as that route would allow us to potentially get closer to more goals.

Now that I think about it Fang said the only way for Flint to recover is for him to kill or end the life of the person on the other end.

So basically Flint might be forced to kill his brother-who is the king of Arland- to get rid of this parasite.

Yeah....this isn't going to be a fun homecoming.
>>
>>25507228
Pick up a pencil with a tiny darkness tentacle and explain the situation in writing?
>>
>>25507325
Why would we do that when we can just telepathy at her?
>>
>>25507325
What on earth would that accomplish? We can speak directly into people's minds, the point in just hiding hiding would be that we don't cause Abigail to fail her summon because of us. Better wait for the sigil to be complete, after which we can notify her of our presence and decide on a plan.
>>
>>25507325
lets not do this, seeing as we want nobody to be aware of our presence. we don't know if the teacher could know of our presence by searching Abby-Sabby's mind if we let her know
>>
>>25507382
>implying we aren't going to murder the teacher the second we get the chance

Hi Guys, I put this together last night. Just some points to think about.

PRO/CON LIST FOR SERVANTING ABBY

PROS

- Abby will be relatively safer at school and will almost certainly survive
- Yi Fang will owe us a favor

CONS

- We don't know whether Abby will stop aging at 10 years old
- A (extremely) well planned assassination may still succeed
- Abby will not be in full control of her powers (spirit or shadow) for years and she won't be able to assist us outside of Archon until then
- Yi Fang might be extremely angry that his niece is now a perma-loli
- Abby herself may grow to hate us for trapping her in a young body
- Yi Fang will almost certainly try to weasel out of our agreements
- Servanting Abby puts forward a bad precedent for Shadow (in that the most capable and wise people should be servanted, not his friends)
- It will also undermine our political power amongst the Shadow mages when they learn that we passed over Ila or Hamil for a 10 year old girl who is fucking Yi Fang's niece.

CONCLUSION:

At the current juncture, it seems wiser to play along as Abby's wildly powerful unbound summon and allow Yi Fang to move through his ritual with Flint.
We MUST be wary of Yi Fang's betrayal - we cannot hand over the staff until the Shel'Kath has been removed or we have some other means of leverage on Flint.
Furthermore, Yi Fang is ACTIVELY SEEKING TO CONQUER ARLAND. He does not want an empowered Flint as an enemy, and so might be trying to fuck us anyways.
>>
>>25507393
We really shouldn't.

I mean, if the teacher screws up (summons something too big) and makes it plausible that they could get killed, then it might be fine.

But just prioritizing eating the teachers is a recipe for disaster, especially after we assume the identity of Abagails summon.

We don't need to go after risky targets, especially when there are probably plenty of magically potent asshole students around.
>>
>>25507427
was that evil laugh because I'm right(why am I asking you aren't going to answer) or because you are now picturing Aruiel and whatsherface snapping their fingers at each other?
>>

>>
>>25507427
Hahaha... Muahaha... MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA- I don't get it.
>>
>>25507440
>- We don't know whether Abby will stop aging at 10 years old
Irrelevant because servanting is reversable.
>- A (extremely) well planned assassination may still succeed
It will need to be much better. That's like saying not to wear a bullet proof vest just because someone might bring a bigger gun
>- Abby will not be in full control of her powers (spirit or shadow) for years and she won't be able to assist us outside of Archon until then
And that's a reason to leave her more vulnerable? Servanting buffs all base stats. It would help her get control sooner.
>- Yi Fang might be extremely angry that his niece is now a perma-loli
See earlier point
>- Abby herself may grow to hate us for trapping her in a young body
See earlier point
>- Yi Fang will almost certainly try to weasel out of our agreements
Elaborate. I'm not seeing the logic behind "He gave Abby a powerup, so now I'm not helping Flint with the parasite"
>- Servanting Abby puts forward a bad precedent for Shadow (in that the most capable and wise people should be servanted, not his friends)
So not protecting Abby as much as we can is preferable?
>- It will also undermine our political power amongst the Shadow mages when they learn that we passed over Ila or Hamil for a 10 year old girl who is fucking Yi Fang's niece.
Ila passed over it by her own choice.
>>
>>25507440
>It will also undermine our political power amongst the Shadow mages when they learn that we passed over Ila or Hamil for a 10 year old girl who is fucking Yi Fang's niece.

I thought that we didn't want political power, only that a nation of acceptance and cooperation be founded...

Compress -> Appear as tiny shadowblob -> uncompress -> grow into massive lovecraftian horror of tentacles, eyes and mouths.

However in the last thread some anon made a valid point, if she does manage to summon something by herself, just eating it would be kinda bad. At some point you gotta let go of the bicycle when you're teaching someone to ride.

We want to look really impressive, so I suggest something crazy.

Poofing in as a cutesy blob would be nice, but we're going for "you fuck with Abby and you'll wind up in many tiny pieces".
>>
>>25507668
Doesn't focus increase the chance of getting spotted, or is that just deep focus? After all we are trying to stay hidden in a room full of paranoid mages.
>>
>>25507685
That is actually a good idea.
>>
>>25507686
I believe oneness drastically reduced that.
>>
>>25507713
75% reduction.
>>
Or was it balance?
>>
>>25507685
I agree.
>>
>>25507668

Focus may alert the teacher to our presence prematurely... then again Balance drops that chance by 75%....
still leaves us with a 25% chance of getting outed...

For what Focus is, I'd say it's not worth it now...

we could always appear in scary mode, and have Abby 'command' us to take a less threatening form...

That way, best of both. It even suggests that she has an overwhelming will power by making a monsterous summon physically alter it's own form to her whim...
>>
>>25507719
>>25507721
Oneness reduced the cost of shadow magic by 20% (or 1 mana for things where 20% is less than 1) and balance reduced focus giving us away by 75%
>>
>>25507648
I kinda want to do this, just to see her reaction

>>25507624
>However in the last thread some anon made a valid point, if she does manage to summon something by herself, just eating it would be kinda bad. At some point you gotta let go of the bicycle when you're teaching someone to ride.

Part of the reason we're in here doing this is that Shadow and Flint and even Fang think that letting her do the summon is a bad idea.

Using servant on Abby and buying shared resistances would be very good.

Would make her get all our elemental resistances, but not only that. It says servants share "your magical resistances". So she'd get the buffs to defense from the aura defense things from that middle tree.

It would very much help keep her alive.

Get fang to feed us artifacts and the dickasses that tried to kill her if they're still alive to buy servant.

If he's iffy about it we be all "I survived getting blasted by a demon lord. Multiple direct hits. It would probably require that even you actually put some effort into it too take me down. Why wouldn't you want Abby to have that level of protection? I thought you wanted to keep her safe."
>>

Exactly. It's worth servanting her for the resistances alone, because she's a squishy human with average resistance across the board. Dodge bonuses are an added perk.

>>

Fang has no qualms with us using Servant on Abby... Though he is effectively telling us to get the required energy (exp.) from CONSUMEing teachers and students, not his magical stuff...

Though for now at least, we can wait on using it on her as she has Us to protect her. We should probably raise the issue with her after a while. After all, everyone should have the right to choose their way in life, no one should be forced into something...

I still think servanting Abby is a bad plan, because she's only 10 and will STAY 10 while she's servanted.

How is she supposed to learn how to defend herself when she has the dedication and disciple of a 10-year old?
>>
>>25508161

tldr; assuming assumptions.
>>
>>25508238

We don't know it's not, either. I just feel like screwing around with very powerful magic and we know less than half the variables here.

Erebus servanted one dude and now he's a freaky eldritch abomination. I'm not sure that Servanting for us is the same thing as Servanting for Hyperion. Why would it be? We're polar opposites.
>>
>>25508283
We're also nothing like Erebus, so who knows if we servant people the same way, or how it affects them
>>

>>
>>25508221
Right. And if we don't servant her, then she's still just a 10 year old that's more easily killable.

The only way we're going to cover enough time for her to grow up is if SM does decade long time skips.

>>25508325
Nobody freaks out about buying other skills and wonders if they'll make us into a dick like Erebus. Making a 15xp cost ability fuck us over is retarded.

If SM went and pulled something like having servant turn her into an eldritch monstrosity, it would be one of the biggest dick moves possible. Ultra shitstorm and quest implosion would result.
>>
>>25508360

SM is a harsh but fair kind of guy from what I know of him. So far we have absolutely NO indication that serventing someone turns them ebil.

Oh wait, Sandalphon or Michael?
>Sandalphon saw some horrible shit in a war against the shadow, Michael lost his mind to a Legion curse

Then what about Legion?
>Corrupted in the Nether for hellalongtime, doesn't count because we know absolutely nothing concrete about what Legion was before The Giant Lazor Show

All of your examples of "servents" being ebil has nothing to do with the fact that they're servents, but rather that they are just FUCKING EVIL EITHER WAY

There is always the possibility of 'temporal magic BS'...

Also, technically this entire discussion we are having over the use of Servant, can be partially accepted as a legitimate internal dispute Shadow is having, as the only examples of people being Servanted are the Angels, who's leadership is discriminatory and seems to be gunning for world domination, and Legion, who apparently was the reason behind the Angels legitimizing their rule due to the chaos his Black Hand faction was causing...

It may not prove that Servant does bad things to people, but Power does that, and Servant is technically a short-cut to power...

That would be a concern if she wasn't already part of a succession inner war. Fang said (and I believe him) that there was an attempt for her life just this morning.

Abby only has a GOOD amount of power. She is going to need every bit of power if she wants to live to adulthood.

A lot of these problems dealing with speculation about what it does would've been solved if we just servanted her first. I don't think it's necessary at all, at least until we need to spread out more and have more leaders.

Yi Fang wants to screw Flint over to start with, bud.

Flint is the strongest mage of the royal family of Arland, the country that was founded by Flint's great-great-great grandfather, and we enlisted the one lich that a) remembers that Arland should belong to him and b) has stated to our face that he intends to reconquer Arland.

I'm not sure why no one else seems to see a problem with this.

Anyway.

I'm for servanting abby, because depite all this argueing, we eventually need to figure out what it does without any of this rampant arguing and speculation.

Don't see it as 'fagging' or 'waifuing' or 'not doing what i want'.

We WANT abby to survive murder hogwarts, yes?
We want flint to survive this soul-parasite, yes?
Yi fang wants to conquer the kingdom flint is an heir to, and has already said on screen that the procedure is risky
Yi fang cares for abby.
Servanting abby gives us a measure of leverage against his someone the lich cares about if he fucks over someone we care about
he's handing us the cost for servanting on a (bloody) platter
Abby's archmage-teacher already tried to kill her once, or her family did, and she was almost certainly a part of the plot.

This isn't something worth arguing about. Its politics. Do whatever we need to do to make sure our friends come out alive and on top.
I'm confident

You should always think carefully about doing something when you don't fully understand the consequences. But, in this case, I don't mind clearing up a few points of contention.

Servanting, by itself, is a small boost to all base statistics. Obis or Ila would benefit the most from being stronger or faster, because they have the skills to back it up. Abigail is still just a nine year old. This is something to consider.

She would certainly have more protection, and some small-scale regeneration, but until you upgrade the Servant class, it's not really that amazing.

This said, the argument that she needs all the protection she can get has merit. Her speed and strength would increase, as would her resistances, and she would gain stealth. She won't be able to actively use any shadow magic right off the bat - that is dependent on the upgrades you have to buy.

So, those are the mechanics clarified. I will not answer any other questions, as you need to weigh the risk and reward yourself. Part of the game is Shadow attempting to understand and regain control of his own lost powers; it makes sense that you would have this kind of debate - risk of the unknown versus the reward of power.

The real question is whether you want to gamble on Abigail. Is protecting her worth the risk of locking in her age, or worse, turning her into some sort of proto-legion? But then, you have next to no information regarding either of those two things. They're both assumptions based on your meta-gaming from what you know of other fantasy plots and your expectations. They might not be wrong, but they might not be right, either.

Now, I have writing to do.

Can't believe that nobody brought up the fact that Light 'won' the Elementomachy, or atleast became dominant afterwards, primarily because he shat out angels like a queen bee.

If we were a normal human I could agree, but most of the thinks a summon could do for us we can do it better. For us they could work mainly as support, as such it subtracts its value in my eyes.
>>
>>25508807
Thanks SM. It does clear up the mechanics part of the dilemma. I admit that ICly it is a bit of a conundrum as you've said. The question as you've put it is whether we want Abigail to be as protected as our magic or power can allow, regardless of the consequences. It's just one more little thing that makes this quest so appealing!
>>
>>25508807
>Her speed and strength would increase, as would her resistances, and she would gain stealth.
These basically all would increase her chances of survival, If we get Shared Resistance then that is increased drastically as well.

This would actually be a pretty fitting punishment for him, given that it would strip the Light from his soul and replace it with weak Shadow affinity.

But obviously we should wait until we have the XP for this kind of thing.

What IC knowledge? We've never seen or used servant. The only creature that probably but wasn't certainly a servant is Legion. There has been nothing IC to learn about Servant.
>>
>>25508815
They also won because Erebus mostly stayed out of things until the very end.

The greater elementals of Water, Earth, and Spirit were all defeated prior to the end.

In the mutual annihilation event, if i remember correctly, Erebus faced off against the four remaining elementals, and managed to kill or scatter all of them before dying.

No guys, we shouldn't servant her because If we servant her then her tight little loli cunt will be spoiled by shadows and I want to make sweet pedophile sex with a tiny little tight bodied spirit mage not some loose ass shadow shit. Maybe read SM's post which addresses both of these points of speculation as speculation? There's a difference between IC knowledge and assumptions. Shadow doesn't KNOW any more than we do: it MIGHT cause one of these too things, but we don't know.

Anyway, yeah, servanting Ila before anyone else would be a good plan. I would've liked to have it done before, but she herself turned it down. We'll have to wait for the proper time.

Until then, since servanting won't help that much, we should just stick near her as long as we're in Archon.

As much as you want to stay hello, you decided that the best thing to do is quietly position yourself in her shadow.

The scribbling continues. Abigail isn't the only young student, but she's easily the youngest. You notice her seat is relatively isolated. The back of the room feels lonely. You wonder if she's made any friends. The niece of the archmage should be popular...but maybe the nature of the Scholomance doesn't lend much to friendship.

Abigail draws quickly to copy the instructor's sigil. She keeps frowning, and 'hmming', and frowning some more.

The teacher finishes drawing and moves to the front of the raised section before the tables. She waits for a moment, until the students catch up to her, and then speaks. "This sigil does not appear in your textbooks. Hopefully, you've been practicing the basics, leaning core principles, because you're going to need them. Remember: the sigil is merely a framework. It is law; it is foundation. A summon itself is forged by the mind. By the imagination. At least, once you get off templates, it will be."

She smiles. It isn't the kindly smile of a mentor. It's the ugly smile of someone that enjoys watching other people fail. You're always surprised how similar expressions can convey such different emotions.

"Who's first?" she asks. No one jumps to volunteer. "...well. How about...our...new...celebrity?"

Abigail starts, and swallows.

"Yes, you, girl. Come on. Why don't you show what the Fang family can do."

Abigail gets up from her seat and edges up to the front of the class. Her fingers work over each other, twisting and turning. "...um..."

The teacher taps the board. "Use my sigil as the framework, and get started. You ARE begin graded on this."

Abigail dances from one toe to the next. "...but...it's not..."

"What?"

"Well...it doesn't seem right."

"...are you questioning your teacher?" the woman asks.

"Oh, no!" Abigail says quickly. She seems frightened by the idea. "But...maybe..." Abigail takes the piece of chalk and draws a new line connecting two smaller symbols. "Like this?"

The teacher's face darkens. "What makes you think -that's- correct?"

"...it just...looks more right, that way."

The teacher sighs. "The fancies of a young girl. Miss Fang. Am I your teacher?"

"Yes ma'am."

"Are you saying I'm incorrect?"

"Um..."

"Yes, or no?"

"...no," Abigail says quietly.

The teacher wipes the new line away with her hand and slaps her palm on the board. "Then get started before I fail you for the day! Again!"

Abigail worries for a moment longer, then closes her eyes. You feel her magic flare. It comes alive on the floor, a orange copy of the sigil on the board.

"Remember, this is a test of control." The teacher steps down from the platform and raises her hands. A thick, magical barrier rises up between the rest of the classroom and the raised stage. "If you mess up, you'll have to deal with the consequences yourself."

The sigil flares brighter. A bead of sweat drops down Abigail's temple. She's straining hard, pushing a lot of power into the spell. She must truly not want to mess up.

A gate opens to the other place...the Nether.

Something rises up though the floor. Shadowy, but pulsing with spirit magic. A ribbed spine lines a long, curved back. Its breath is heavy and feral.

>>
The teacher folds her arms. "Well...that's not quite right. You'd better banish it. It doesn't feel mentally stable."

The creature lets loose a shriek that echoes off the walls of the room. Abigail rapidly steps backwards and she focuses hard again. The creature lunges forward -

- then stops. It freezes in midair, caught in Abigail's magic, and it quickly begins to disintegrate.

The teacher does something. It's difficult for you to sense through the barrier - and she's intentionally hiding it - but she's countering Abigail's banishment spell. But how?

You feel a thread of Spirit, and look behind you. The gargoyle's eyes are bright. She's acting through her familiar!

The disintegration of the creature halts, and begins to reverse. Abigail's power is greater, but you realize that the teacher's insistence - she's plotted this from the start.

What do you do?

>make yourself look like a second summon, and devour that monster

You think so narrowly. Once it gets out she has slightly higher resistance to magic, then they'll just try to kill her through non-magical means.

That or seeing as they TEACH FUCKING MAGIC, they'll know that light magic wrecks shadow shit.

Why don't we just do the smart thing and eat the teacher in front of the students and teach everyone a lesson like Yi Fang asked us to do?
>>
It's time to act.

You glance around the room, spotting a few magic lights here and there.

<Abigail, it's me!>

Abigail jumps. She glances around. "Mr. Shadow?!"

"What are you doing?" the teacher demands. "It's going to eat you at this rate!"

With her focus broken, Abigail seems lost. "Uh...uh...!"

<Stay calm. I can't just jump out and help you. Pretend that you're making another summon. It'll be like you're summoning me. I'll protect you.>

"Um...ok...I'll make some lights!"

She raises her hands and focuses. Spirit magic flares out in a broad circle a short distance away. It flickers and flashes in a fancy pattern. You set yourself in the middle of it and use your aura...Doom Aura.

The lights go out. The only source of visibility is the sharp neon lights of Spirit. Without Abigail actively fighting it, the creature is fully revitalized. But now, she's not alone.

You rise from the floor.

You tower above Abigail, stretching up until you fill the room from floor to ceiling. You aura rolls off you like black smoke. You dwarf the tiny shadow-spirit creature from the Nether.

<I'm back, Abby-Sabby.>

"Mr. Shadow!"

The creature lunges for Abigail.

Your arm twists about the girl, sweeping her out of harms way. The creature strikes you, biting your side.

>you take 1 damage (55/56)

Your arms and shadows combined and spear the creature down into the ground, crunching down through it and into the wood. You rip it aside, tearing it in half, and then consume what's left over.

>you gain 2 EXP (18 total)
>you gain 1 HP (56/56)

The next moment, you let your aura fade, and snap back to your normal size. Abigail grins and gives you a hug. "Thanks, Mr. Shadow."

The teacher walks up to the barrier. "What on earth are you doing?! What spell is this? You haven't learned anything close to that level!"

Abigail's face grows nervous. You pat her on the head. <Just tell her I'm something you made in your free time.>

"Um...well..." Abigail says. "Uncle Yi - I mean, the archmage helped me make a summon before. So I just did that, because my banish wasn't working."

The teacher narrows her eyes. "...I see." She lowers the spirit barrier, and steps up with her hands behind her back. "This exercise wasn't about making a powerful summon. It was about -control-. Leaning on the archmage won't get you anywhere in my class. You're done, Abigail. Get back to your seat."

The classroom is filled with whispers and snickers. You glance out. There's not a friendly face amongst them - just cutting glares and open jealousy.

"And banish this," the teacher says, pointing at you.

"Um...that's kind of hard."

"No doubt, considering your lack. Of. Control. For now, get to your seat. Don't return to my class until it's gone."

"...ok." Abigail wanders off the raised platform.

You feel a strong need to remove this problem. Permanently.

But you relax, and let yourself be towed back by Abigail's shadow.

She sits, and worries at her fingers again. She glances at her shadow. "I messed up."

<No,> you say. <The teacher was trying to make you fail.>

"Professor Suen was..." Abigail's eyes widen. "That's why she messed up the sigil! Uncle Yi told me to be careful, but she seemed..." Abigail's head droops. "She was nice, at first."

<It's alright, Abby. I'll protect you.>

"...how did you get here? I thought you were caged up!"

You give her the PG version.

"...wow. So, Sir Flint needs to get better? I'm sure Uncle Yi will help a lot."

You bob your head slightly. <...how did you know the sigil was wrong?> you ask.

"...it just felt wrong," she says. "Uncle Yi says I'm an artistic mage, like him. He says most mages need math and charts and pictures to focus and balance magic stuff. I just sort of paint them in my head...I feel it, I guess? I don't really get it."

<...I see.>

The class ends without more events. Abigail quickly scribbles down pages in some obscure text she needs to read, and then scurries out of the class, pocketing her box-like note keeper. The formerly empty halls are now filled with students walking to-and-for; it seems the day is done for most. Abigail keeps her head down and sticks near the wall, quickly meeting Adavan. The lich takes her hand and leads her forward, keeping a sharp eye on the bustle.

It isn't long before you make it back to Adavan's study. "Hi Uncle Yi," Abigail says.

"Why hello there, my little ghostling." He leans forward and pats her head. "How was class?"

"Um...well, I did the summon wrong, but then Mr. Shadow came, and he said that the teacher made me do it wrong on purpose. And it felt wrong, too."

.... Why would SHE survive when everyone else died? She would be completely unharmed, yet... there's no trace of the other students? Why Abigail? Did she have a spell she got from Uncle Yi which protected her from it? Wouldn't that show favoritism, and have it less likely for her to get promoted?

The teacher glances up, taking a sharp breath. She blinks, glances around. Then turns back to the slate board.

"I see. Well, we're going to have a talk about that, so why don't you go upstairs and get changed for dinner."

"Ok." Abigail runs off to the back of the study. You notice a small door set in the back. She vanishes through it.

<Where's Flint?>

"In my guest quarters, up above," Fang says. "It's best he keeps a low profile. Less tolerant Archonians would kill him on sight. There isn't much love of Arland, here." Fang glances at Adavan. "Have they made a move?"

"Not yet."

"I see." Fang looks to you. "The real threat is preparing itself carefully. I'll need you with Abigail at all times in the coming days."

<No kidding. What would you have done had I not shown up today? She was in serious danger!>

"Relax," Fang says. "The crystal in her hair pin is a focal point for my magic. I would have taken care of things, one way or another. But on the subject...professor Suen is still alive. I thought you were going down there to set an example."

You rise up and stare at the archmage. <Examples will be made,> you say, <in a precise and excurciating manner. What does professor Suen do after class?>

"She usually heads back to her family's home."

<Where is it?>

"Sixth level down," Adavan says.

"I like where this is going," Fang says. "I'd say you have two options. Either tail the professor - she won't be home yet - and sneak inside. Or...they have a large veranda peaking out over the canyon, just below the waterfall. Though you'll need to break in, that way." He smiles his evil smile. "Either way...they've been a thorn long enough. Their family is expendable. Take care of them." He walks away from the room. "I'll see you on the morrow. Use caution."

The door shuts behind him. Adavan looks at you. "I'll stay and watch over Abigail."

What do you do?

>glide down to the veranda
>stalk the professor through the fortress
>some other strategy

SM, going back to Abigail and this set up was the worst thing that you could let happen to this quest.

Now it's nothing more than a vehicle for creeps to live out revenge fantasies against the teachers they hated in school.
>>
You sprint back down into the fortress proper.

It's emptied out somewhat. You stick tot he ceiling, creeping along at a quick, erratic pace. Few of the novices do more than blink or glance up at your passing. None really notice you.

You see a few elder mages, and some guards here and there. Security is tight in Archon. You keep a low profile.

It isn't long before you find the professor, strutting home with a satchel over her arm. You have half a mind to eat her right there, but you hold back. She turns onto a stairwell.

You check Isolation. It's still very fragile. You shouldn't press it to hard.

But you want this one to die. Screaming.

What do you do?

We know she is less powerful (raw power) than Abigail.
This means either that Abigail is so incredibly powerful at the age of nine that even the elite of the elite is weaker than her.

alright, first things first, make sure we are compressed.

and SM. a question. do we lose shadow power when compressed? or only physical. because shadow domination is shadow power based. along with our stealth attacks.

but guys really. dont kill the family for her sins. that is revenge. not justice.

but a possible way to get her on edge is lets play flicker in the corner of her eye. be a shadow on the wall. a person that she sees one moment, gone the next. go full slenderman with replicate and blink. idk go crazy guys. but kill her before she gets to her home.
we are doing this for abby. not fang. and her family has done nothing to abby yet.
>>
>>25510341
>get her on edge (write-in)

DON'T FORGET!

---------------------
---------------------

You merge with the shadows. The flicker and move with you, drawn to your presence, concealing your movement. You move between them silently.

Professor Suen doesn't suspect a thing. Eventually, you reach a hallway that is empty. Ahead lies a wide, ornate door, guarded on either side by twin gargoyles. They look similar to the one back in the classroom.

You give the hunger shard the slightest of touches. It rings. An image of her being consumed by shadow blasts forward.

Suen whirls, eyes wide, her fingers cracking with orange magic. She looks back down the hall, and stands there for a moment, breathing hard. She slowly lets out her breath, then picks up her satchel and continues on.

The door opens when she touches it. She slips inside and closes it. You just make it before a shock of Spirit - and Water - seals it shut.

The home is warm and ornate. Orange-hold lights sit in clusters on the ceiling like little magic chandeliers. Through several wide living spaces, you see the entrance to the veranda. The waterfall lies opposite, crashing down the long cliff.

She moves into the dining room. Her family is already eating. And older man sits at the head of the table; two others that must be her mother and father sit next to him. Another, younger man, more Suen's age, is also present. He feels like water. That must be her husband, then. They all have not-insignificant magic power, but the professor is the strongest of the bunch. You don't feel overwhelmed, but you wouldn't want to fight them all at once...

She sits, and begins to eat. They make small talk. You tuck yourself into a shadowy corner of the room.

What do you do?

>wait, and listen. The time will come, and you could learn something.

I love it.

Stay a while and listen. Maybe well learn something interesting, maybe well know where the family jewels are kept, maybe we find out something about Feng. Whatever the case, be quiet and wait for the evening, then kill the husband with her shadow and try and work the demon baby in there somewhere. If necessary start with the others first so as not to get ganged.
>>
>>25510614

Wait and listen.

We can smother some of them in their sleep...
>>
>>25510619

I rare we learn what we can now and eat her afterwards then do the same with the rest of the family.
>>
>>25510619
Seems kind of needlessly cruel and rather drawn out. Shadow dominating her to kill her family and then herself, okay. That way nobody would suspect us, Yi Fang, or Abby. Past that though it just kind of seems drawn out and time consuming.

Wait for a bit. If we can find a good moment, then fuck with them a bit.

We can differentiate the guilty from the innocent by listening in. Judgement shall be rendered only upon those who deserve it.

I'm pretty sure the family jewels are kept in the husband's underwear. They wouldn't be very useful otherwise.

>Well, everyone seems obsessed with consuming in general, so why not just consume the most powerful people we've encountered?

Its not that, its that we need the XP for the servanting - half the reason we're here is to eat magical resources to turn it into protecting abby. (potentially, if she agrees)

However we do this, we should make sure to consume the tastiest of them for xp.
Do we get full meals for dead things, or only partial credit?

If partial, then we want to make the killing blows ourselves - though turning them against each other is a good opening move.

So did the mayor of Abby's town, he got together a mob of townsfolk to burn her alive. We didn't kill a single one of them. In fact, we risked our live to make sure they stayed alive only a few threads later.
>>
>>25510788
They were dumb bumpkins.

They were confused and scared townsfolk who thought Abby was the source of a plague. This is a powerful mage who knows precisely what she is doing

Yeah, but we don't know for sure whether all these people are guilty yet.

if they are, then it's woe to the wicked, and th ones who are trying to kill Abby are gonna die screaming, but we're not going to slaughter innocent people just because it makes Fang's political life easier.

We understood that they we afraid and easily swayed. Plus the Mayor was not thinking right. Micheal and this teacher, they are like this with out external forces. They will be punished.

The only reason we're killing this chick is because A) She threatened Abby, and

Just a thought: perhaps the crueler the act we put on, the more Temerity we get? It does act on us going like a machine, so just a word of thought.

Do we have any sort of mind reading powers?

Can we use them on the sly?
Does consuming things give us insight into their knowledge?
>>
>>25510786
oh god this is brilliant
>>
>>25510819
So? Temerity is not intrinsically bad.
>>
An attack now might work...but then, it might not.

The shadow is best as itself. A shadow.

The conversation turns with the clink of forks and chewing food. Gargoyle servants move in and out of a kitchen. You could probably break them easily, but there's at least ten or twelve throughout the house, as far as you could tell. It would be annoying if they ganged up on you.

You wonder what other things this house might hold...

The old man speaks up with a long, gravely voice. "What of the Fang girl?"

"...she's unexpectedly strong," Suen says. "The plan seemed to be working...but she brought forward a second, stronger something. Some work of the archmage, no doubt. It took car of things. I was lucky enough to play it off quickly...but he'll be more than suspicious, now."

"Well, after this morning, it was lucky your brother was still alive," he says. "We've got a target painted on our backs. We need to let others take the lead, after these..." the man glares at the professor. "...obvious, and blatant failures."

"...I apologize, my lord. It won't happen again."

He waves a hand. "Don't apologize to me. You're the one who'll have their soul ripped out if you mess things up again." The old man stands. "I'm turning in. No one is to leave the house, excepting official business, or your classroom duties, I suppose." He hobbles off to bed, helped along by one of the gargoyles.

The residents disperse. The gargoyles clear the table. Professor Suen and her husband take to the veranda. Her mother and father also retire to bed.

What do you do now?

>wait until they're all asleep. Poke around the house.
>take out the grandfather
>take out the mother or father
>sabotage the veranda, dumping them over the cliff
>attack the two on the veranda
>mess with the house
>some other strategy

>>
>>25510819
Temerity is based on instinct. Thus, we wouldn't get much temerity from planning out this big elaborate way to kill her for revenge. We'd get temerity from jumping her now and eating them all or eating her immediately.

And then, while she is lightly slumbering, we can slowly prod and touch her, make her think its her husband, slowly ramping things up until she climax's and wakes up, THEN we reveal ourselves as the bed, holding her down, making her completely helpless while we CONSUME her husband while he sleeps blissfully unaware.

And only then shall we CONSUME her.
