Predator Quest: Episode 34

You are Three-Claw, a Yautja hunter of the Cloud Viper clan. You have been tasked by your clan Matriarch to investigate breaches of forbidden knowledge by clan Weyland on the planet Fey'lenn, or Pandora, as it is known in the human tongue.

Due to some drama towards the end of last session, the the previous quest thread is archived at foolz, here:

You take the melted remains of the holo-projector and attempt to salvage the data chip, but unfortunately, it seems to have been fully destroyed in the power surge.

The door behind you slides open and several well armed warriors burst in. They sweep the room with targeting beams.

"Everything alright, executrix?" One of them asks.

"Yes. A reckless move on my part. Get me a technical team immediately, and bar all communication from exiting this building until a full system sweep can be arranged."

The warrior acknowledges. "Yes, executrix."

Your mother turns to you. "Knowing the matriarch, she'll have made a copy of this data. But whatever message it sent out will make our job more difficult."

Do you:

A. Suggest she requisition a copy of the data from the matriarch and try the decryption again.
B. Suggest she check with the archivist for a more comprehensive and time consuming study of the data.

"We should check with the archivist," you tell your mother. "Get some experts to look through the encryption."

"Agreed," she tell you. "It's a bit unfortunate that we didn't find out much from the data, but at least we're certain there's data on there worth looking into. Now, how else can I help?"

A. Ask her about her opinions on clan Night-Prowler and the conspiracy.
B. Ask her about the newly appointed ruling council.

A.

You ask her about her opinions on clan Night-Prowler and the conspiracy. She thinks for a moment.

"Smoke and mirrors, I think. The conspiracy Night-Star was involved in extends far above one Night-Prowler clan. To do what they do would require complicity across the empire. The Night-Prowlers, with this sudden change in rule, is attempting to mask the involvement of other clans. If you ask me, I think this is a deliberate move to distract the Empress's agents while other conspirators take the opportunity to hide their tracks.

"Which is why," she adds, "the current Night-Prowler ruling class MUST contain at least one conspirator."

The door slides open, and an aide walks in. "Executrix, the technicians are here."

Your mother acknowledges, and turns to you.

"One more question."

Do you:

A. Ask her about the Empress's interest in the conspiracy, and what she's doing about it.

"What's the Empress's interest in this? What's she doing about it?" You ask.

"The Empress likes to hold a tidy court. She likes things to be regimented, and honor-bound. She has her agents to make sure of that, and while the official line is that this conspiracy doesn't exist and never had, Night-Prowler's reaction is a sure sign that she has been keeping a keen eye on the situation.

"I'm not privy to the mind of the Empress nor her agents, but I can tell you this much: her agents have a bit of reputation of being everywhere at once. Once you leave our clan city, remember, anyone can be an agent, each with their own methods and their own plans. If you get in their way, they won't hesitate to remove you. They're not your enemies, but be careful in counting them as allies."

You thank her. She exits the office hurriedly, off to consult with the technicians.

You exit the building and find the day to be very late. You head home to get some rest.

It is the next day.

You check your wrist computer to find a message from Burning-Scythe. He has acquired the signal analyzers.

Seeking-Eye informs you he will be at the training grounds today, giving Sharp-Strike a few lessons.

You make your way to the Archives.

You find the Archivist in her lab, rapidly tapping away at a nearby console. The synthetic head you bought back is mounted neatly on a dissection bench.

She turns and greets you.

"Ah, Three-Claw. Apologies, I'm quite busy at the moment. The Executrix just handed me a slew of data and asked me to attempt to decrypt them, and naturally, it's highly secured, and very difficult to crack."

You tell her this must be the data you were digging through yesterday. You give her the account of how a hidden switch within the encrypted block hijacked your mother's console and sent out a message.

She thinks for a moment. "Interesting," she says. "This encryption is... challenging. It may take me days to crack it, even if working full-time. When do you think you'll need the data inside? Is it time sensitive?"

Do you:

A. Tell her to take her time, and try her best to get it decrypted.

"Would it help if there was someone else to assist you? Surely there must be someone here qualified to lend a hand."

"There are - quite a few - but they're all engaged with studying the Queen specimen. Besides, the executrix has mandated that this data is for my eyes only. No one else is to look at it."

She pauses. "Unless you can find the decryption key to this data, I'm afraid the only way to crack is to keep on plugging away at it."

"The key?" You ask.

"Yes. The decryption key. In this case, it seems to be a certain signal. Most likely, whoever locked this data also has a transmitter counterpart, which sends a signal that forms the algorithm to decrypt the data."

"I don't have this key, but now that I know it exists, I'll keep an eye out for it," you tell her.

"Ah, Three-Claw. Welcome back." She takes a look at your plasma-caster. "Still working, I see. Good. As it stands, I have a few new prototypes I'd like to test, if you're interested."

>>A.

"Always happy to help," you tell her.

"Good. Follow me." She stands up and leads you down the hall and into her private armory. She depresses a button, and lowers a nearby weapon rack.

The rack is filled with several devices. Some you recognize, others you can only guess at their intended function.

She picks them up one by one.

The first is what seems to be a small and compact plasma pistol. "Rapid fire. Small. You can carry it on your arm, or on a leg hoster. One charge pack..." she depresses a button on the side and a small, round pelle ejects from the side. "...is good for 100 shots. Not very powerful, but good in a pinch."

The second looks like a small, coiled whip. She takes the handle and shakes it. The device uncoils like a serpent, and the strands suddenly unravel to for a wide mono-filament net. "Good for capturing specimens or subduring things you don't want to kill, and far lighter and deploys a larger net than a netgun." She depresses a second button, and the net retracts back into a strand, which coils itself back into a loop. "Also functions as a melee weapon."

She takes up a third device, which looks very much like your mine dispensor. She flicks a switch, and out drops a familiar looking mine. She depresses a second switch on the dispensor, and a small holoscreen is projected outwards. Suddenly, you notice four mechanical legs extend from the mine. It begins to crawl up a nearby wall. "Remote control, with camera and audio feedback. When you're done..." the mine suddenly buries its legs into the wall and stops. "...it's a mine again."

"Take your pick," she tells you, "but only one, for now. Can't let you have all the toys now."

Do you ask for:

A. The compact plasma pistol.
B. The whip-net.
C. The drone-mine dispenser.

You pick up the mine dispenser and examines it. "I'll take this. Looks helpful."

"Wise choice. I'll have someone swap your current stock of mines aboard your ship for these new ones."

"Anything I need to know about this?" You ask.

"Just what I showed you. The controls are easy, and you can overlay the drone's camera view to your vision mask. Each mine has a remote control range of 1 kilometer, and enough power reserves for a good hour of movement and tracking."

"We're working on an improved version with longer legs that allows it to jump outwards from any surface."

You thank her. She depresses a switch on the wall and retracts the weapon rack. "Well, that's it. Good hunting, and let me know how it works out for you."

>>C. The shipyard.

You make your way to the shipyard.

As you enter, you immediately notice a flurry of activity within the main hanger.

You take a few paces forward to see what they're working on. As you enter the main hangar, you notice a massive ship section suspended upon a series of scaffolding. You recognize it to be a cutout of the human battlecruiser you captured earlier.

Hundreds of technicians, from many different clans, are performing various work on the section.

The shipmaster approaches you, and greets you.

"Ah, Three-Claw. Good to see you around."

She follows your gaze and looks at the massive battle cruiser bridge. "I hear we have you to thank for that. The plan is to take it apart and put it together to mimic every signal, every signature a fully crewed human ship will emit. By the time we're done, from outside, it'll be indistinguishable as a human vessel, even when it's crewed by a few Yautja."

Do you:

A. Ask her where the rest of the ship is.
B. Ask her if she knows what the plan is for the ship.

"And the human's prototype weapon? What are your plans for that?"

"You mean that massive abomonation the humans tried to put together using a piece of our technology? I had it cut out and scrapped. The Matriarch didn't want it to be public knowledge, so I had to do it somewhat discretely. It was close to being operational, though, which is worrying in its own right. We've replaced the extra room with some additional cargo space and munitions storage. Which reminds me, Three-Claw, you remember the first ship I loaned you, which in turn you almost destroyed?"

"Yes. The Wind-Adder."

"She's fixed up. I asked the Matriarch who I should assign it to, she said she'll leave it to your discretion, since it was meant to be a permanent fixture for your mission. So? Any ideas?"

Do you answer:

A. "I may have a use for it for specialized occations which demand high stealth and high speed."
B. "I'm hoping to bring a few young hunters on my next mission. Perhaps I'll loan it to them."
C. "I'm not sure at the moment; I'll let you know.

"I may have a use for it for specialized occations which demand high stealth and high speed," you tell her. "May as well."

"Sure." You hear a sharp whine as a nearby plasma cutter begins its work. The shipmaster leads you away from the hangar towards her office.

"Speaking of which," she tells you, "the Matriarch has allocated a good sum of resources to my team, and I can only have so many hands working on the human ship without overcrowding. Since the Matriarch informed me you might be ground-side for a longer period this time, I figured she's hinting on asking me to give you a hand with doing some work on that ship. I've reviewed the schematics, and there are a few areas I suggest we try to improve."

She brings up a holo-screen, and displays a model of your ship.

"First up is the cargo space. You don't need that much cargo space. I'm afraid it's a design relic from ages ago. We can work on modernizing that space and put it to better use, be it turning parts of it into a munitions bay to store extra missiles, or even modifying it into a hangar for smaller craft.

"Or, we can make use of these empty spaces, along the outer shell. I can easily fit four more plasma turrets there."

"Then, there are the main cannons. I don't want to remove it, but some optimzation may be useful. I did some quick calculations. We can double the cannon's firing rate for the same power consumption if we update the cooling systems, here. What do you think?"

Do you:

A. Ask about renovating the cargo space.

>>
>>25503859
I don't think our current ship is THAT much bigger than the Wind Adder.
>>
>>A. Ask about renovating the cargo space.

"Let's talk about the cargo space," you tell her.

"Right. So take a look here." She zooms the holo-screen in on the first level of your ship.

"A few things. If we stack these storage bins here, and move this there... and now you have all this extra room to work with."

She taps a few areas to get your attention. "I can mount landing clamps here, and a mag rail here, and now, it's a hangar for one smaller craft, like the Wind-Adder for example."

"Or, I can mount a secondary missile bay here, and turn this into a munitions rack, you can almost triple your current missile capacity."

"And here, take a look, I can install a compartment towards the rear, cut out these two pieces here, and install a pair of secondary thrusters, to make your ship far more maneuverable."

Do you:

A. Ask to have the cargo space converted into a hangar.
B. Ask to expand the cargo space into a munitions bay and a secondary missile launcher.
C. Ask to have a secondary set of thrusters installed.
>>
>>25503898
Wind Adder is pretty tiny though. If we remove some unnecessary walls and consolidate all the cargo together we should be able to fit it in. If not we could at the very least install a docking hatch of some sort that lets us attach the ships together.

So A. if we can fit it in. If not B. We can always use more point defence when the shtf. Plus our main guns already smite things like the fist of god, so dakka is nice but we already have a lot of it.

"How is he coming along?" you ask Seeking-Eye.
