Recent Events Summary:

While pretending to be the summoned creature of the Archmage Yi Fang, you were captured by the Ring City. The angel Michael, one of the greatest healers in the world, is responsible for your 'examination'. But a curse he received from a Demon Lord twisted his mind into that of a psychotic madman - and you were at his mercy.

Auriel was working with him to restore her powers. You communciated with her telepathically, begging her for help and informing her of Michael's insanity. Before she acted, however, you managed to burst free of your cage and attack and consume Michael.

You snuck into the city sewers and used them to access the underground complex holding the souls of many Shadow and Spirit mages captive. You destroyed the magic holding them in place - and the suddenly-freed slaves immediately turned on their masters, throwing the city into chaos.

Intent on helping them escape, you rushed to the Airship Noiralev to consume its core and use its power, but you ran into Auriel and Flint in the engine room. They explained that they'd found the remains of one of Michael's victims. That - combined with Flint's encouragement, and her own experiences - has led her to put her trust in you.

In one swoop, she took command of the ship, turned its crew against Sandalphon's despotism, and used it as a rallying point for the embattled shadow mages huddled inside the collapsing city.

>damn, that was fast

The battle has rendered the Noiralev useless, but you managed to safely guide the craft to one of many stone plataeus in the Shiprakers, an isolated and desolate region where Tarun Gakth meets the sea. You've convinced your fellows that the best place to set up something more permanent for your renegades and refugees is in the Great Forest. The spirit mages, led by Hamil, are currently putting together a mass teleport spell to bring you there.

You've started scouting the surroundings, hoping to find some trace of Steward or his proclaimed home, City 001. You found a few robots - but they weren't friendly. They claimed to be working under Steward...but frankly, you don't know enough to draw any conclusions.

Ability Tree

GREEN abilities have been unlocked and learned.

BLUE abilties are unlocked, but are not yet purchased.

RED abilities are revealed, but locked due to prerequisites.

UNDERLINED abilities are active-use, as opposed to passive. Not all active abilities require mana.

Unlocked Ability Descriptions:

http://pastebin.com/zYkUY1zM

Books the Main Character has read:

http://pastebin.com/dAXR00gP

-----------
Active (intent-use abilities that don't require mana)
-----------

Consume - Devour the latent energy of enemies and magical artifacts to add to your own power and restore your health.

Glide - Your aura allows you to glide, dropping safely from large heights or covering large distances if starting from a high position. Gliding is always stealthier than flying.

Flight - Spread wings of darkness to soar through the air. Carrying capacity is based on physical strength.

Supersonic - Fly at supersonic speeds. You'll move extremely fast, but suffer a large penalty to stealth and magic stealth. Takes 1 turn to activate.

Mimic - Take on the vague form of things you've seen. Won't stand up to close examination, but works well in the dark.

Snuff - You shadow can put out the lights it touches.

Blink - Sight-range teleportation. (Cannot blink through walls, through the ground, into places you can't see, etc. 5-turn cooldown in battle. Auto-cooldown if battle ends. You can only Blink yourself and inanimate objects on your person. Max range 1/4 mile or 0.4 kilometers)

Focus - With a burst of concentration, you can significantly improve your detection of both the mundane and magical, but you also drastically increase the risk of giving yourself away. (think sonic ping)

Deep Focus - Long-range focus with heightened detection and scouting ability, but with a correspondingly higher chance of revealing yourself.

Berserk - Ignore your defenses and strike all around you in a vicious physical assault. Difficult to determine friend from foe.
>>
Something to consider for Legion:

We can remove the power given to a servant at any time.

I bet we could use that somehow when he finally gets 100% out of the nether and we have to fight.

Shadow Eater - Eat an enemy's shadow for a small heal. Their shadow will regenerate over the course of a day. However, things might turn sour if they notice their shadow is missing...

Doom Aura - Puts out all lights in an area at once. Large penalty to dodge if used during battle.

Compress - By sacrificing strength and defense, you can compress yourself and your aura to the size of a small mouse, greatly increasing dodge and physical and magical stealth. Warning: requires a turn to activate and deactivate.

-----------
Spells (and other abilities that DO use mana)
-----------

Shadow Strike - Strike the foe with needles of darkness. (base power 2. Costs 2 mana)

Shadow Assault - Launch a flurry of shadowy projectiles at the enemy. (base power 4. Costs 4 mana. Can hit multiple enemies)

Shadow Beam - A concentrated beam of shadow power. Attacks faster than shadow strike/assault, and is more accurate. (Costs 6 mana; 6 base damage)

Nightflare - Disrupt target spell or enchantment. (costs 2 mana)

Nightblaze - Cancel enchantments and spells in an area around you. Success and range based on mana spent. (Spend 4 to 10 mana. Radius: 30 feet. Additional 20 feet per mana. Alternate: Spend 10 mana to attempt to cancel any one single spell in sight-range with a greatly enhanced success rate)

Shadowmeld - Magic-based stealth. Pay any amount of mana. Physical and magical stealth increases based on how much mana was spent until stealth is broken. Can be used to re-stealth mid-battle.

Shade - Create an illusory projection of yourself to confuse enemies. (dodge buff. Costs 1 mana)

Spirit Whip - Lash the enemy with a whip of spirit magic. (base power 2. Costs 2 mana)

ROUGH DRAFT OF THINGS TO DO, THREE! (Abby-Sabby edition)

>Find Joey
>Fortify our current position
>Ask the Elven Queen some very pointed questions about our memories
>Deal with Legion
>Get Yi Fang’s help in finding the Staff of the Winds, work out if it really is a good idea to free Geb, maybe free Geb, put him back when it turns out to have been a bad move, otherwise make friends
>Learn what the fuck really happened in the past
>JESUS FUCK DO RESEARCH ON HOW SERVANTING AFFECTS PEOPLE BECAUSE WE DO NOT WANT TO MAKE ANOTHER SANDALPHON OR LEGION, OR CAUSE A POLITICAL SHISM IN OUR PEOPLE

Someone made a list of ongoing tasks of varying importance, I cleaned up the list and sorted them to groups by relation:

Personal:
>Get our stuff back from Yi Fang
>Make sure Abigail is okay with Yi Fang
>Murder Yi Fang if she's not
>Deal with Flint's parasite
>Get Yi Fang’s help in finding the Staff of the Winds

Elemental:
>Free Geb, make a new friend (Have a fallback solution - bind, CONSUME, etc)
>Get all keys, find out what the Spirit thing is

Political/Leaders:
>Find out situation in Kelvere, is the Duke really dead?
>Find out what else the Duke was hiding from us
>Get information on Sandalphon’s movements and the Light empire’s situation
>Get in contact with Steward/City 001
>Find out what the hell’s up with the Black Lady. Can she be trusted?
>Get Obis his throne back
>Ask the Elven Queen some very pointed questions about our memories

Misc/Faction:
>Find Joey
>Fortify our current position
>Research how Servant works, make sure it won't cause unrest among people
>Research Dynamos
>Assure peaceful co-existence of differently aligned mages

OOC:
>Deal with summerfriends making bad decisions on purpose

Potential new tasks:
>End Skysever (we have read that the spell is physically located somewhere and visible, yet hard to access)
>Deal with Legion
>Explore, this world feels small
>Find more fragments of Shadow
>Find the other Elementals
>Convince Flint to become the leader of his people, after the parasite has been dealt with
>Find what happened to the Dwarves
>Find out about the Presence we felt when using Focus in the Shadow temple underneath Tarun Gakt

Remember all of these have direct and indirect solutions. For instance, the keys: We could just go in and take them by storm, sneaking around and killing those who spot us, but do we want that? Would it help upkeep our image as a good-intending catalystic force, or would we appear as self-righteous destroyers? Atlantis is believed to have a key. Too bad for us, their water supply relies on it.

Same as last thread, why I don't want to servant Ila.

Right now, she's the representative of the Shadow mages. She has been for quite some time now, both in the ringed city and here. They look up to her, and trust her, more than anybody else. Whether she's servanted or not won't change that.

If you want someone to guard the camp, I think it can already guard itself pretty well. It's not a particularly big risk we're taking in not having a servant guard the camp.

The need to servant isn't particularly pressing right now. We need to remove Flint's parasite, and it's unlikely anyone we servant will be with us. We should save the exp for our own use for now, at least.

I voted against servanting Ila, but as a matter of it not really being the right time.

As the de facto leader of the freed mages, she probably is our best choice so far.

If we are planning on servanting her, or anyone for that matter, we should talk with them about it for a while, in detail, before we act.

It's not like the mana pool or our exp is going to rot.

>>25478497
Thanks for putting this together.

Sorry the thread is too busy going apeshit for this to get recognized.

Current priority seems to be sorting out our mistake from last thread with the rebel robots and contacting City 001.
We should probably work towards it while we are in the area, and we have a bit less than two weeks.

As for servant madness, lets just talk with her about it.
It's not like we are going to drag her to the pool and servant her without talking once.

Also, love the GIF.

I'm here! Lets do this!

>>
>>25478596
Really? Everything he's drawn for SQ has been pretty crummy.
>>
>>25478575

Pfff, summoning in general has showing itself as a poor investment, unreliable at best and very dangerous at worse. Traditional magic has a bigger priority than that flawed school.
>>
>>25478642
We can do that after we settle in Felnoir. There are orcs there, too anyway.
>>
I just realized, since geb has been suspended in the air since the elementomachy, he should have been ripped to all hell by the skyserver, and there is a good chance that all that's left is his dead bits floating around.
>>
>>25478616
Yeah, at this point I don't think we need to servant anyone, but once we decide to hand out some buffs to loyal followers, I don't think we need to worry about shit like Legion happening to us. We aren't Erebus, etc.
>>
>>25478642
It's worth a shot. Improving human/orc relations could go a long way in not dying by a big fucking ax in the middle of the night.
>>
>>25478601
No. If you ignore the nibblers, they will fester and destroy the quest. We need to smack them down now. Hard and decisive. Crush their dreams of getting with Ila and end it once and for all.
>>
>>25478648
Finding the keys and freeing the spirit under Jacobs Field is the other way.
No matter what route we take to free Flint of his parasite he'll still need to go home to Arland to deal with it-as far as the seer said.
>>
>>25478675

>>
>Ila's already flying to the cavern with us
>We're gonna take the orb and top off mana
So, what's our reason for bringing her? What are we gonna tell her we brought her there for? Or are we just gonna have her stand there wondering what the fuck just happened?
>>
>>25478670
How do you know man? we haven't used any. We don't even have to go near Demons there is like three paths of summons. And wisp bro really really helped us out by finding Flint.
>>
>>25478714
It's more of a matter if he's willing or not, he has our stuff anyways so we still need to go to him, I suppose trying both at the same time would be wise.
>>
While I think we should investigate the consequences by servanting people with Auriel, I think having a more powerful agent that could do stuff for us individually would be good, our backlog just keeps growing and a servantized Ila would be useful for getting shit done.

That said, I think we should go for Eclipse, since we have a shadow mage army, shit will explode if we use that!
>>
>>25478677

Still, I think is wiser to wait a little longer before making her a servant. Hell I don't even like how that sounds at all.
>>
>>25478688

It's more like he's caught within a never-ending tornado. While driven mad by the Light-based parasite.

Yeah. Poor Geb.

There was some discussion about putting together a list of goals to help questers keep their eye on the ball. I took the liberty of doing so. Let me know if there's anything I've missed.

Active Goals

1) Sir Donovan Flint's Parasite - Flint's parasite, a demon known as a Shel'Kath, must be removed. You've learned that the lich Yi Fang knows how to remove it.

2) Abigail's Education - Hopefully, Abigail is safe and learning to control her powers in Archon's Scholomance...but you've heard it's a dangerous place.

3) I want my stuff back! - You left your utility belt in Yi Fang's keeping, and you want it back.

4) The Staff of Winds - To free the earth elemental, the sage Taremtis told you to acquire the Staff of Winds - and that Yi Fang would be vital to doing so.

5) The Four Keys - Four magic keys lock the great vault under Jacob's Field which contains a great Spirit power of an unknown nature.

6) City 001 - You want to locate Steward and find out if the constructs will become your ally...but the robots are a complicated bunch, sometimes aggressive, and always secretive.

7) The Throne of Kan-Abar - Obis seeks to regain his throne. It has been foretold he will parish in the attempt without your help.

8) Establishing Independence - You've freed the Shadow and Spirit mages from the clutches of the Ring City, and they see you as their leader. How will you lead them?

9) Who is the Black Lady? - You've heard her name spoken across the land in fear and respect - the greatest Shadow mage of the modern age. Is she an ally, filtered through the lens of war and propaganda...or exactly as terrible a foe as advertised?

10) Elven Inquisition - You know not what you truly are; your memories were sealed away. You want to find the elf you believe responsible and ask her some very pointed questions.

Among others.

Yeah, for sure. I don't even know if Ila is the best choice, or who else would be a good candidate. It can wait for now, but once we get to it we shouldn't worry too much. Worst case scenario, something goes wrong and we start to CONSUME.
>>
>>25478754

Speaking about finding Steward, maybe we having doing it wrong all this time. Lest try to find another huge robot with a core, it was Steward who came to us after we got retrieve a core.
>>
>>25478783
That's what we might see it as, but humans are petty and fight over power ups very easily.

That's nice. What about the teleporter?
>>
Alright.

We talk with Ila, see what she thinks about servanting, and go from there.

We keep looking for more robots; if we find city 001 or it's bots, good. If we find 002 rebels, more cores and EXP for us.

Once we get to the forest, we will be in place to zip over to Archon and bug Yi Fang + meet up with Abby.

Checking out the situation in Kelvere can come whenever we have a free moment.

I believe I stated it was fried by your overcharge.

I don't want to spend another thread with bad rolls and accomplishing almost nothing.

Let's go and deal with Flint's parasite, now. Servanting is hardly a priority compared to that.
>>
>FINALLY
>Last time...

Two days pass. You scout across Tarun Gakth for signs of robots, going deeper into unknown territory.

You find a lone repair construct, trundling along. You land next to it. It ignores you, and keeps walking forward. Eventually, it reaches a wall, and simply walks into the wall. It falls over, gets up, and then walks into the wall again.

You put the construct out of its misery, and consume it, but you don't feel all that much stronger.

>HP: (37/56)

You're walking through the Noiralev when you hear some shouting. It's coming from a room with a door slightly ajar. Bright light burns within.

You peer inside the door. Several mages of all elements are packed inside, many of them with ignorance potions from the Noiralev's stash. Tyrael and Hamil are huddled over a board filled with stones. It's an odd shape, very different from the one you played with the Duke. Several empty glasses sit on the table next to them, clustered around a pile of money.

Hamil grins, then moves a set of stones over. There's a moment of silence, and then Tyrael slumps over, defeated. Half the room groans while the other half cheers. You suppose he made some move that decided the game.

>con't
>>
>>25478890

You find Ila outside, helping herself to few gulps of water. You walk up to her group of mages - which, you notice, with a bit of satisfaction, holds an angel. You get her attention, then motion away. She walks over to you.

"Shadow?"

What do you say?

>bring her aside; it's time you learned more about each other.
>take her to Refuge. Your chosen leader must have the strength to lead
>ask her something unrelated (write-in)
>something else
>>
>>25478866
Oh, quick thought, only elemental lords can do the servant thing right? How are those angels going to react to suddenly being on the side of the Shadow Element Lord? Some I'm sure will be less than thrilled...

I'm not saying not to do empower Ila, I'm just saying that we might want a frank discussion with (at minimum) Auriel so she has some time to acclimatize her people to the idea.

i dont think even aproaching the idea of servant is good right now. if she knows we can do it then it might be interpreted as a slight when we dont
>>
Eh guys, regarding the servanting. If we do go through with it(though I am against it), lets ask Ila to keep this a secret, for now. We don't want it to become common knowledge that we are capable of bestowing power.

This.

>>25478904
Talk to her.

When / if we get to the shadow pool, we really need to let her know to let go of revenge.

Don't do as the angels did and hold on to the past. Break the cycle of abuse and hatred, because justice is not only shifting the wrong to another side.
>>
>>25478977
We've already told her it's a possibility, about two threads ago.

We can also promise she'll lose her powers if she or ANYONE ELSE will be dicks about it. Let it be known this is a test to see if people can play nice, unlike the last time.
>>

Just shoot the shit with her, so to speak.

DO NOT TAKE HER TO REFUGE.

We should not be Servant'ing ANYONE right now. Especially with all these starstruck shadow mages that would vie for our attentions.

Whether Shadow is more attentive than Erebus or not, he can not change the nature of man.

You take Ila aside, near the edge of the plateau.

<It seems Hamil and Tyrael have found a bit of common ground.>

"Really?"

You nod. <Stones.>

Ila smiles. "Hamil likes his games. I was never one for it...but I'd bet on him, occasionally."

<You bet?> you ask.

"We didn't have much entertainment," she says quietly. "...our rooms, single-man cells where the sewers met the mana center. We couldn't speak with one another, so it was all finger talk, hidden in corners where they couldn't see. We had lookouts, just to play stones. Just to play a game." She smiles. It's half grim, and half nostalgic. "We used chalk we stole while out on missions. Easy to rub away, wash off with sewer water. Played plenty of games, stones included. Easy to get makeshift pieces for a simple game like that."

<...what did you wager?>

"Rations, mostly." She looks at you. "What did you want to talk about?"

Good job keeping your head on, being against something and still able to think about it rationally. Shame we couldn't have this last thread.

No matter who we eventually, hypothetically servant, keeping it relatively hidden is a good idea. Just be sure not to hide it TOO long, lest someone suddenly find out we have an army of servants at our beck and call.

>>25479037
We talked about sharing our power, yeah. Could be a problem...

>>25479066
I would hope we're smart enough to put down any stupid competitions for attention before they start. Erebus had this problem because he didn't care about people, we're learning to merge with them.

We should definately bring Ila with us, time to get to know each other, it will also give us some insight into what the shadow mages think and what they expect of us.
>>
>>25479060
We need to find out about her whole view of justice vs revenge.

Not sure about the exact wording, but something along the lines of asking her about how she would act should the light fall from it's current dominance.
>>
>>25479112
After we consumed Isolation, we used Focus and found something looking back at us. And we fled the temple as if we were afraid of dark.
>>
>>25479029
Anyway someone could swap out the red (kinda taken by Fire) for some of the purple/violet that's associated with us? She's going to be a representative of Shadow after all.

Might as well. We could go negotiate with the orcs if we did that as well.
>>
>>25479060
And idea is our last question should be a what if scenario. We have gained quite a bit of power, people who follow us, and have our own set of morals. But to accomplish our goal we must take on the forces of the entire world to make things right. What would she do with such power and responsibility?
>>
Really? I've always imagined a servant as someone like Death from Darksiders, chopping angel wings off with some impressive acrobatical movements.

>>
>Not wanting to go and consume that other deep shadow for another shard.
>>
>>25479094
While I to want to get this show on the road I think it's important we look over everyone until they are about ready to leave. Having crazy robots from city 002 doesn't help.
>>
>>25479060

I know is hard to ask but tell of the battle on ring city. I am glad that you are all free now but I am not naive to think it was a bloodless revolution. Do you know how many were away on missions? And...how many did not make it to the ship? I am responsible for their deaths as well.
>>
>>25479094
Slow down, skippy. Not yet.
>>
>>25479214
>>25479101
Also mention (if it's appropriate) that forgiveness is something for yourself, to get peace out of what has hurt you.
Though I've no idea how shadow would say that or if it understand humanity enough to say so.
>>
>>25479218
>Implying it's just a deep shadow and not something far more monstrous.
>>
>>25479085
We probably will end up using servant on her at some point.

The concern I have is if it is the right time and the right circumstances.
If we servant one person, we should probably servant multiple people, and pick up some servant branch powers so they have more than enhanced shadow power and endurance.

The sense, multishade, and shadow eater seem like good options, considering the other tow cost more, and we don't want to cause people to share our resists/weaknesses until we buy off out light weakness.

>>25479094
>>25479166
This is probably the best-case i can think of. Giving a bit of extra power and then leaving her to lead her people as she has for years.

>>25479191
That's why we solve this city 002 problem first, before anything else.
If we can't solve it by teleport time, well then we are out of harm anyway.

>>
>>25479246
Mhmm. The timorian deep held all sorts of different monsters.

Fortunately, we are much stronger than we were then, taking down cave creeps, of any size, shouldn't be too hard, especially with a mana pool right there.

Our main worry would be not collapsing the cave of the pool, considering it got dangerously close to doing so when we fought the Lonely Shadow.

>>25479283
We never found out what it was.

The only thing that may have been legion but what never proven to be what the "presence" that we felt inside the dying demon lord.
>>
>>25479191
There are literally over 300 shadow mages alone there, the camp is probably one of the highest concentration of military power on the continent at the moment.
>>
>>25479268
I agree with the sentiment, but Shadow Mages are more like Navy Seals and Angels are more like Marines. Army is ground holdind foot soldiers, what we have are specialized fighters of awesome.

>>25479191
Which is why they aren't defenseless without us.
>>
>>25479268
Remember, City 001 was made up of robots numbering somewhere in the hundred thousands.

I don't like those odds.
>>
>>25479268
And I'm suggesting that if city 002 throws something at our army while we and Flint are gone, it might minimize casualties on our side if we improved their defense capabilities somehow.

"...they do."

<Why is that?>

"...I am strong, in magic. That's one reason. I try to be fair. I...I try to like people. I have friends among them." She folds her arms. "Some scoffed, when I was optimistic about our lives, and our situation. I tried to stay positive, though...at times...it was impossible." She brings a hand to her face, hiding it from your sight. "...I'm not sure if I believed my own words. They weren't for me. They were for the younger ones, really."

<You were strong, when others were weak,> you say. <So they respect you.> You glance back toward the Noiralev. <I haven't noticed many younger mages...none less than sixteen years.>

"...they were targeted in the fighting at the city," she whispers.

<...I see. Do you hate them?>

"The angels?" she asks. You nod. "...I guess I do. I can't help but hate them. They stole my life from me. From all of us. I can barely look Auriel in the face. But a month ago, she ordered me about like a dog."

<...she is a stubborn one,> you admit. <But honest. She called me an evil monster right to my face.>

Ila laughs bitterly. "Did she?"

Once we get to our destination: 'insert speech about making an order that will keep the peace and uphold justice'. Then ask if she would like to be the one of the first to accept this gift.

I'm not sure shadow pools work like that.

<I feel a power within me,> you tell her. <If you wished, I could make you stronger, by giving part of myself to you. You would be greater than you are, now. A leader with the strength to defend her people.>

"...you chose me," she says. "Why?"

<Based on what you've told me.>

"What if I lied?"

<Then you lied,> you say, shrugging. <But as you said yourself - I choose optimism. Because optimism in the face of uncertainty is courage.>

"Or stupidity."

<You have me cornered,> you say. <But then, you've just called yourself stupid.>

Ila grins brightly, and for a moment, the pain and the tension wash from her face as easily as the ocean wind blows over the two of you. She turns to the cliff's edge, and spreads her arms, letting the air brush past her. "...stronger...to protect them." She drops her arms. "...maybe...when I can stand again, on my own, and look an angel in the eye. Then - and only then - can I accept your strength. I don't want you as a crutch, Shadow. You wouldn't respect that."

>con't
>>
>>25479823
It's probably safer to wait until we can make a dynamo.

Narrative-causality wise, it's practically inevitable, either through freeing Geb of rediscovering it ourselves.

Either way, we are taking the airship with us, so we can come back and work on it when we make progress.

>>25479842
Wouldn't matter if it was obvious, nothing in this age can work with mana pools.

Might be that easy, and yet no-one looks into mana pools because of how dangerous they are.
>>
<...I did not think of like that.>

"Really? It always seems like you think of everything."

<Sometimes, it feels as though many voices inside me pull me in different directions,> you say. You sigh. <I am not the monochrome Shadow I appear to be.>

"We all argue with ourselves. What's important is what we decide."

<I am glad for your support,> you say. <I place my trust in you.>

Ila stretches her hand toward you. "I will build a shelter you can be proud of. I'll build you a city of hope."

You take her hand. <What will you call it?>

"...Haven," she says. She pumps your hand, then turns from the edge. "I will make a Haven." She walks back to the camp.

What do you do now?

That's just manipulative SM.

For all we know Fang's going to be pissed at us for starting a war and removing his ally against the black lady.

Or he could be laughing his bony ass off, given the damage we caused to his enemy.

Regardless of what we choose, we should probably head to the shadow mana pool on the way to Archon. We need full mana in general.

You meet with Flint in his temporary room. It looks like he's working the kinks out of his new armor. You're glad he's dressed to go.

He turns, then jumps a foot back. "Dammit, stop sneaking up on me!"

You shrug. <Do you tell the wind to stop blowing?>

Flint sighs. "What's the occasion?"

<It's time we dealt with our parasite problem. And I want to see Abigail.>

Flint settles back on his feet. His face becomes stony. "Archon, huh?"

<Yeah.>

"...Fang, huh?"

<Yeah.>

"...Abby, huh?"

<Yeah.>

He heaves another sigh, then secures his sword to his belt. "Let's get moving."

You march through the halls of the airship with determined strides.

You exit the starboard hatch and see a few angels and mages, including Auriel and Ila, gathered in discussion. Flint swallows, then makes a beeline for his lover.

Auriel turns when her companions all look over her shoulder. She smiles at the both of you, then frowns when she sees Flint geared up. "...Donovan?"

He clears his throat as he nears her. "Auriel...it's time. Shadow and I need to get to Archon."

"...I'm going with you."

"You need to stay," Flint says firmly. "You're a leader, here. We'll be alright."

Auriel's frown turns into a scowl. "You gonna make me?"

Flint looks nervous at the prospect of telling Auriel what to do.

But do you have an opinion?

>we could use the backup. Let her come with you
>Flint's right. You need to stay with your troops

No clear consensus, arbitrarily calling for letting them work it out.

Note:

You already spoke to Hamil about long distance communication. It is possible, but the ends of the "phone line", so to speak, are rooted in space, and a mage must be present with either "end" of the spell at the desired locations. Enchanting an item that can do the trick and be carried around with one or two people is complex and requires many reagents, but he's hopeful he can find most of them within the Great Forest, and find the others given enough time.

So, that's basically a big, fancy NO.

I'd like to figure out the inner darkness, so we can get mighty regen and be nigh-invulnerable.

Flint takes Auriel's hands in his own. "Auriel," he says. "I'm asking you to stay here. Please. I think it's important that you do what you do best."

Auriel's face softens. She smiles. "...if you say so."

"I know so." He kisses her on the cheek. "We'll be back before you know it."

"...you'd better keep that promise."

"Of course."

<Don't worry, Auriel. I'll make sure he stays safe.>

"Now I'm worried," she mutters.

"So...uh...Shadow," Flint says. "How are we getting there? Teleport?"

You grab him by the waist and drag him close. <Flight.>

"No!" Flint shouts. He starts struggling. "Absolutely not! Call Hamil!"

<He's busy with the larger spell. We can't waste his energy.>

"I am not going to fly again! I've had enough flying for a - "

You clam a tentacle over his mouth. "Don't struggle. It's hard enough staying balanced without that."

"Mmmph-mmph-mm!" He waves a hand desperately at Auriel.

She cups a hand to her ear. "Sorry, I couldn't hear you. Something about your pride, and doing things on your own?"

Flint's hand jerks one more time before you grab it and tuck it in. <Hold tight.>

You fly up into the air a safe distance, and gather your aura behind you...

You fly at top speed, dragging a disc of compressed air behind you.

Each time you feel the spikes of the Sky-sever creep in, you dive to the ground, scrape it with a limb, and once more climb into the air. The spell immediately departs even after the briefest contact with the earth. It's more strictly ruled that you'd expect.

The plains that follow Tarun Gakth quickly transition to the massive canopy of the Great Forest, but even that massive feature is quickly left behind by your tremendous speed. You see a large lake on the southern end of the forest for just a few seconds, punctuated by what appears to be a massive tree - and then you're gone, whipping over more flatlands.

The land turns rugged and rocky. Hills and small, gravel-strewn peaks and flat-topped mounds dominate the landscape, all grown over by stands of trees and tough shrubs. You zip through the canyons formed by many creaks and small rivers, and it isn't long until a huge structures rises in the distance. You cut out of your supersonic and flight up more slowly.

For a moment, you think you've mistake a mountain for a building.

But both assumptions are correct.

At the end of the river valley lies a mountain fortress. Buildings protrude from its structure like roots from a massive tree sticking out from the ceiling of a cavern. The entire mountain is carved, squared, intentionally made.

Walkways line the outer walls. Patrols of soldiers, most bristling with magic, walk at regular intervals. You can feel lines of magic extending from nasty-looking turret emplacements and leading back into the core of the fortress.

But it's not entirely functional. The tiles of the buildings are elegant, artistic. Great statues and etchings climb the walls. Even some of these are coated in magic, but many are not - purely aesthetic.

You chance direction, soaring directly up the wall of the fortress. The most important parts should be at the top, and you're not here to deal with red tape, or be mistake for a wild elemental. You keep your senses peeled for Yi Fang's distinctive soul...

Several hundred feet later, you reach the top of the fortress.

The peak of the mountain city bristles with towers and domes. The landscape beyond continues on normally - there's actually a huge, sudden change in height the way you came, turning into that giant, seemingly unnatural cliff. The river bends around the top cap of buildings and falls down around the side of the fortress, far below to the canyon floor.

You stare at the river. Floating craft - flying crafts! - are moving to and fro along the river. They start at one tower, then descend, then end somewhere else in the complex along the river's edge. You can see people boarding and leaving from the miniature airships. Some kind of public transport? You wonder if they're suicidal.

Just as the thought crosses your mind, you see a few men riding one-seat versions of the small transports. They fly at exceedingly high speed close to the rough, rocky waters.

It doesn't speak well of them.

You're unsure of where to go, but the grand-looking staircase at the bottom of one of the largest towers is probably a good place to start.

You land with the grace and silence of the shadows, and release your grip on Flint.

The armored knight flops to the ground, wheezing his breath. His gloves scrape the dust on the neatly paved stone. "Oh...dear Light...thank you for your salvation..."

<Don't the Shadows ever get thanked for anything?>

Flint gives you an ugly look. "...no."

<That hurts, you know.>

"Ah, shove it."

"It appears we have some guests," comes a voice.

Everyone turns. The soldiers salute sharply. The mage bows, and walks backward in respect.

His voice is unfamiliar, as is his appearance. And his spirit is muddled - perhaps by intention - but you'd recognize it anywhere.

<Yi Fang.>

"Shadow," the man says smoothly. He stops before you. He glances at Flint, chuckles slightly, then cocks his head expectantly.

<You look different.>

"The armor is merely for effect. My magic is my defense." He folds his arms, drawing his cape back dramatically. "To what do I owe the pleasure?"

<Just thought I'd stop by for Flint's checkup. I'd heard there was a mage here that could help us out.>

Flint smiles. "Your sense of humor is as shocking as your apparent intelligence. Well, I don't like to conduct business in the open. If you would follow me." He gives Flint an ugly look. "The knight can come too."

Flint looks like he has more than a few words to say, but he keeps it to himself. You follow Yi Fang up the long stairs. <Where is Abigail?>

"One thing at a time, Shadow," Fang says.

<If it could wait, I wouldn't have asked.>

"Presumptuous, aren't we?" Fang says. "She is being watched over by Adavan. He'll stop anything lethal...unless you feel the need to scamper off and leave your friend here in my...care."

<...lead on.>

Fang chuckles. "And here I thought I had your trust."

You continue up and into the tower...

>Flint did smile at your joke. The speaker was Fang. Forgot enter key

------
------

You move up through the tower, past several other halls leading off the stairwell. You quickly gather that it isn't a small building.

When Fang reaches the top door, he waves a hand lazily. What sounds like a hundred locks click and snap and unwind, and the door opens by itself.

"...bit paranoid?" Flint asks gruffly.

"Please," Fang says. "The locks are to make people think I have something valuable kept here. The real treasures are hid in the best place."

"What's the best place?" Flint asks.

"In plain sight, obviously."

Flint rolls his eyes at you.

You step into the room. It's a study - the magical study of an archmage. Bookshelves line the walls, wrapping the room. A wide desk with a plush leather chair sits in the middle of a thick maroon carpet. It's all rather tastefully done - dark, warm colors. It smells like fresh leather and ink.

Open books sit on the desk, but most of it is laden with stacks of papers. One stack is neat and completed; the other a bit more messy. A quill sits in its inkwell. A seal rests near a pot of wax. A hundred other tiny glimmering baubles dot the room, some moving, some not. Most shimmer with magic. You're not certain as to the function of any of them. Perhaps they're for show, too. Pomp and circumstances seems to be a running theme with mages. Maybe they just tend to be full of themselves.

Fang gestures with a finger. The leather chair flies up and over to him. He sits, and it carries him up and lowers him behind the desk. Another gesture brings down two chairs from the ceiling, which you suppose were suspended there for the purpose. They settle on the carpet and arrange themselves in front of the desk. "Why don't you have a seat over here?"

Without much other option, you sit. Flint takes the chair to your left.

Fang leans forward and rests his head on his hands. "So."

Flint swallows. "...uh...so. Can you get this parasite off me?"

Fang begins to laugh. "You two are quite the amusement. Let's see." Fang counts his sentences on his fingers. "A talking elemental. Captured by the Ring City, to never return - and ends up escaping, killing Michael, destroying their soul vault, stealing one of the most powerful airships in the world, and baiting Sandalphon into destroying half his own infrastructure."

He looks at Flint. "A knight of Arland that is lightborn, rather than windborn. You probably can't even perform the Windburn." Flint's face twists, and he blushes deeply. But he says nothing. "I thought so. And you're cursed with a magical parasite that reduces what would otherwise be...formidable magic power. And somehow you've gotten a Shadow to help you."

Fang looks back to you. "Ah, lest we forget you've earned the allegiance of a angel and you risked life and limb to protect my niece."

He leans back. "Well, gentlemen. What can I do for you?"

What do you say?

Some stuff we might want to talk about.

Obvious:
- Parasite. What does he need to remove it, how long will it take, can we help in any way?
-Abigail. We want to see her.

Other things:
- Legion is still running around. Fang can probably deal with it if he encounters a part but his followers and students should be careful. Don't want Abigail to be swallowed by Legion while we are away.
- Building big alliances for world-peace. We have a new city of shadow, spirit and light. We have the fire-dude, we might get Arland soon (I'm looking at you, Flint)
- Big spirit under Jacob's Field. Fang seems like the kind of guy who would have one of the keys.

I think we just found Erebus's theme.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=actZumishxQ
>>
>>25482234
Also, just to further give examples, I've noticed nobility-lines tends to have specific affinities. For example:
Duke Vellick's family were the remnants of the worshipers of the elemental of lightning, meaning that they were traditionally lightning mages.

Obis is the descendant of the worshipers of the fire elemental

Abby-sabby, while it is unknown if Yi Fang and his family worshiped Hecate, traditionally have very strong spirit magic.

Perhaps at birth Flint's parents detected his light affinity instead of what was supposed to be wind (which is now revealed to us as the proper affinity for his family), and thus this has always been a point of contention between him and the rest of his immediate family.

>>
>>25482349
Fang can't help with Obis, as far as we know. Taremtis was incredibly vague with him. Basically just said "Hey, stick with this guy and you'll be all fine, yo!"

I mean, we should get back to him, but I have no idea how to go about putting him back on the throne.

<I hit Sandalphon directly, at the end,> you say. <I doubt I killed him...but what is the expression? He screamed like a little girl.>

Fang sighs. "A show I'd pay to see. Pity."

<You seem well-informed, for having been so far.>

"Several spirit mages were plates of mine," Fang says, "their minds protected so as to not give them away. I am kept well-informed of the Ring City's movements. The angels are powerful, but they are not subtle. Archon must play its strengths to survive."

<Do you have my things?> you ask.

Fang waves a hand. Your satchel flies out from an obscured corner of the room. You glance upward, but you don't see anything but a ceiling with an elegant wallpaper. There are heavy enchantments in this place.

"The pen and the diary are part of Abigail's inheritance," Fang says. "As such, I have removed them from your purse. The rest is intact." He smirks. "I didn't think a creature such as yourself would be summoning succubi, but your reagents are for one of the lessers. Let me know if you'd like...an upgrade."

"No deals, no trades?" Flint says.

"I said I would look after the purse, and I have," Fang says. "It is returned intact. Abigail is healthy, if...pressed, by her education. My word is good. Unlike the word of some knights, who have not yet formed their so-called Order."

"I've had enough insults from you," Flint snaps.

Fang gives you a look. "I was under the impression that your Light flea needed my help."

You clear your "throat" at Flint. He settles back into his chair. <We do.>

"Removing a Shel'Kath," Fang muses. "I can do it. Right now."

Flint grips the edge of his seat. "...so...?"

"Of course, there's a high risk I'll tear out your soul with the parasite," Fang says calmly. "Not that I'm particularly worried. Thought you ought to know."

Flint slumps. "...then...is there no other..."

"Of course there's another way," Fang says. "First. It'll take about a month of preparation to create a spell both attuned to your soul and sensitive enough to remove the Shel'Kath without ripping out any important bits." Fang points a finger at the knight. "The Shel'kath...yours, anyway, has been there for quite some time. It's practically fused in, mixed somewhat, like some malignant growth. Peeling it off without peeling away your very essence is something only a mage of my caliber could accomplish." He looks between the two of you. "Secondly. Once the spell is complete, the Shel'kath will be primed for removal, but the removal step is more complex. We must track down the other end of the Shel'kath, and Sir Flint must either kill it, or the end the life of the soul to which it is attached. This act will cause the Shel'kath to instinctively attempt reunification, upon which the primed spell will fully activate and rid him of the curse.

Flint slowly nods. "...but...what is the other end attached to?"

"That," Fang says quietly, "is an excellent question." The mage focuses for a moment, staring at Flint. You take a look yourself...the Shel'kath's faint, gleaming trail leads away, and vanishes through the wall of the study. "The trail, as I can tell, leads somewhat east, toward Arland. Perhaps your homeland holds answers."

You and Flint exchange a glance. You both remember the words of the safe - that Flint must return home to end his curse. Have you finally found the answer?

"Now then," Fang says. "I'll happily invest hours and hours of time and energy into this task...as long, of course, as you do me a favor as well."

<...I'm listening.>

"Have you ever heard of something called the Staff of Winds?" Fang asks.

Flint does a double take. You tense up.

You feel as though fate is drawing a noose about your neck.

<...I have.>

"I need it," Fang says.

<For what?>

"The answer to that...is dependent upon many things," Fang says. "However, I'm not out to scalp you. Half now - half later."

<What do you mean?>

Fang rests his elbows on the desk. "I'm a busy man, but if I see Flint for an hour or so each day, I can have the priming spell ready within a month or so. Here is my offer: I will ready the spell. Once it is complete, you'll be able to witness its effect for yourself - good enough proof. With it in place, you seek and retrieve the staff, and when you turn it in to me, I'll help you track down the other end of the Shel'kath myself."

<And in the meantime?>

Fang smiles his evil smile, and directs it at Flint. "The good knight should really not move about with a curse on his soul. He can be...my honored guest." Fang turns to you. "And you can attend to my niece. She needs to enter the archonium as soon as possible. However, I cannot immediately justify this choice to the council without catcalls of favoritism."

"Wait just a minute," Flint says. "I'll not have you using a little girl for your schemes, be damned if I have a parasite or not!"

<Your words are concerning,> you say darkly.

Fang raises his hands. "Allow me to explain."

Fang stands. He turns away from you, and folds his arms behind his back. His fingers work over each other, one after another. "...the girl...Abigail...is my only family. And this..." He waves to the room around you. "This is my life. This is what I have built, by my own hands. By my own sweat, and blood, and tears. It is the only gift I have for her."

"How touching," Flint says.

Fang turns on the spot. His face is a mask of rage. "You have finished speaking."

Flint's mouth snaps shut. You're surprised - it seems Flint touched a nerve. Maybe...Fang is actually being honest about the situation.

<Please, continue,> you tell the mage.

Fang stares down Flint for another moment, then looks at you, quickly relaxing to his normal self. "The greatest of our young mages graduate from the Scholomance to the Archonium. My personal recommendation is what gives a promising mage a chance to be considered for the Archonium. The council itself is a collective of ten mages, all graduates of the Archonium, the greatest of Archon's scholars and warriors both. They are those qualified to take the position of archmage, though I have held that seat for some time, making the fact irrelevant.

"But pressure has been...increasing," Fang says carefully, "for me to retire. Public awareness of my unnatural stretch of life grows swiftly, fueled by the winged rats of the Empire. Archon has troubles enough without being led by a lich." Fang looks out his study window, past the rivers and towers. "It may not seem it, but I am a man of country. My age has come and gone. My wars are fought. It is time."

He looks back at you. "But the council is wanting. I look for a successor, and I find only the greedy, the ambitious, and the foolish. I had hoped my younger brother's child would be the one, properly raised, properly educated - but he ran from his responsiblity, and he took his pregnant wife with him." Fang squints. "But the pendulum has swung my way."

One I can teach, who can lead Archon to triumph - over the north, and the south. Who can succeed where I, ultimately, have failed."

"One who can tame Arland once more?" Flint says, defying the mage's edict.

Fang turns on him. "And your ancestor, Sebastian? Your great grandfather? What do you know of him, but stories and fluffed-up war tales?" The mage leans in. "I knew him well. I -trusted- him, Sir Flint. He stabbed me in the back, and laughed about it. He threw in with angels, made himself their dog so he could get his little slice of this sad earth. So shut your mouth, you insignificant shitstain of light, and speak again only if you want to die."

Flint doesn't speak.

<Archmage,> you say. <I understand you have strong feelings on the matter...but Sir Flint is my friend, and I respect his opinion on the matter.>

"What do you want me to give you?" Fang demands. "Lies? No. If possible, yes, Archon will bring Arland back into the fold. But hopefully in friendship. He turns his back again. "A council seat is empty; there are only nine High Mages. Abigail might take the seat, and from there, move to my position. But there are others, graduates that seek my attention, those that would make themselves graduates. The council watches my movements, and concealing Abigail's parentage was impossible. They know I favor her - but they all favor themselves, or their own family members, or some up-and-coming mage they've bred and preened themselves. If I place her before them, now, when she is unaccomplished, they will reject her admission to the Archonium, as is their right, and I will be unable to say anything. And once rejected, always rejected."

<Then what do you suggest?>

Fang smiles from ear to ear as he turns to look at you. "A summon such as yourself...would be what I would call an accomplishment."

<And if I refuse?>

Fang gives Flint a withering glance. "Then find yourself another doctor." He looks at you. "Novices do not make it into the Archonium. The reputation would protect her. Adavan is not assigned to her for fun and games. Three attempts have been made on her life already. I thwarted a fourth just this morning. Without you, she might not even make it." He shrugs. "I cannot interfere directly. Despite the deepest desire to do so, I must not. My hands are tied by the politics."

What is your response?

>sounds like you need Abigail promoted more than the Staff of Winds. I'll protect Abigail. In exchange, cure Flint.
>I'll not have her your pawn in political games. I'll get you the staff, but she can learn on her own, not in your mad school

>>
>>25483114
But that in itself is the biggest problem, you see: we know absolutely nothing about how or even if abby can age if we servant her. If we go ahead and do it and she continues to age to adult hood, that's all well and fine, no damage done. If we do it and she becomes stuck as a little girl forever, then we have to live with the ramifications of that action. So, I would rather play it safe and wait until she's old enough to make a rational, informed decision on the matter.

Also to avoid the potential horror of trapping her into an 8 year old's body forever.

Indeed. Let's just *ASK* Fang. He has Abby's safety as his primary concern. If we reveal that we can imbue her with that power, then he can tell us if it's a good idea or not. This is knowledge that we don't really need to keep close to our chests, and we have no reason to believe he can use it to dick us over.

>>
<...I will help you protect Abigail, and retrieve the Staff of Winds,> you say. <But two things.>

"Yes?"

<Are any of the Spirit mages in my camp your men?>

Fang raises an eyebrow. "...apparently not, because I'm unaware of said 'camp'."

<Good.>

"You have my curiosity, now."

<More on that later,> you say. You mentally decide it's probably a good idea to let Haven get its feet under it before you open formal relations with another country...and you should probably speak to Auriel and Ila first, before committing anything to Fang. <Secondly, I want to hear what the staff will be used for.>

Fang pauses for a long time, and then he nods. "...you have my word that I will show you, later."

What is your response?

You are right. The wish to finally get answers to this stuff RIGHT NOW had temporarily overcome reason. A question about the ability tree.

Does Shadow actually know and have full control all the abilities he has from the moment we confirm which ones to buy?
Is he aware of the ones which are unlocked but not purchased?
Would he know that he can use Servant on someone? Would he know the upgrades to Servant that could be applied to it?

tldr; Do we know as much as shadow in regards to his abilities or do we know more?

He knows and has full control of whatever he buys as soon as he buys it. It's like it's restored to him...along with the memory of how to use it, how it's used.

He is not aware of what is unlocked, but not purchased. He senses a 'route' into which potential power can be pushed, but not what lies beyond.

He is aware he can grant someone what feels like a "part of himself" to add to their powers, but doesn't appreciate the full extent those powers could reach.

Fang closes his eyes. For a moment, he says nothing, and then he opens his mouth to speak. "...in short, no."

<In short?>

"If she graduates from the Archonium, it won't be a question," he says.

<...I could grant her some of my own power,> you say hesitantly.

"What do you mean?"

<If you have a shadow mana pool, I believe I could imbue her with extra strength,> you clarify. <Something extra to protect her.>

Fang nods. "As long as it's safe enough. Such a mana pool exists not far within the fortress proper."

<I need only some excess energy,> you say. <Do you have any spare magical artifacts I could consume for the task?>

Fang smiles his evil smile. "I have a better idea." He walks around the desk, and taps one of the floating baubles near the bookshelf. An orange screen crackles to life in front of him - a sort of flat image that holds the days arranged into regular blocks.

"What is that?" Flint asks you in a whisper.

<It seems to count days,> you note.

"It's called a calender, you plebeians," Fang says, half-sighing. He runs his finger along its breadth. "Perfect timing. She's in her summoning class right now. Her first practical." He looks at you. "Two floors below us. Don't get detected on the way."

Did you just miss the part about how, once shit's blown over and 15xp is inconsequential, we can just remove, let her age, and rebuff if she wants it?
>>

>"It's called a calender, you plebeians,"

I love Fang so much
>>
>>25483850
We will always have wisp.
>>
<...wait a minute,> you say. <I haven't agreed to anything yet.>

"I see," Fang says. "So you're just going to let a 9-year old whip up a summon, then? Yes, I can't see any problems with that."

"For the sake of the Light, man," Flint says, "she's your flesh and blood!"

"And it is for that reason I sit here and do nothing!" Fang snaps. "Or should I condemn her as a cripple, incapable of moving without my help?"

"You're just pressuring Shadow into doing your work for you," Flint says smugly.

Fang makes a face. You're surprised - it seems he was caught. "...well...that's not untrue. But how would it look if the archmage of the land went down into a novice's classroom specifically to help one student? She already has a bodyguard just outside the door."

Flint licks his lips. "...well..."

Fang needles his fingers. "Shadow. Go down there. Stay hidden. When she attempts a summon...no matter the result, take its place. I will instruct you from there."

What do you do?

>...fine, dammit. But you'd better keep your word (run down to the class)

We can pretend to be her summon now, but put more emphasis on getting that free xp fo buffing her.

Did you miss the part where it said decades? Cause trapping Abby in an eight-year old body for decades would be pretty fucking shitty. Also, I'm done with this conversation, since Servanting won't freeze age anyway.

IT'S TIME FOR CLASS

Next time, on Shadow Quest.

SHIT, REVERSE, REVERSE
UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCES HAVE BEEN POINTED OUT.

If Abby's summon is under control, let's not eat it.

Gee, I wonder if desummoning is also part of the test.

Are we ever going to be able to ask Fang about hereditary magic affinities, or are you purposely stepping around asking that question for your own reasons which you will not reveal to us?
>>
>>25483985
I've seen that before, but now it actually works...
Huh.
>>
>>25483985
Fuck, I cry every time I read that thing. Damn you.
>>
>>25484009
Also its sort of sad that an eight year old (or what ever age she is) is probably better at summoning than we are
>>
>>25483985
And here we had the ability to stop that this whole time, but people were too MUH XP to stop it.
>>
>>25484052

She's nowhere near where we are at ripping asses new holes.
>>
>>25484059
It's like you aren't even paying attention. No one has said NO SERVANTS EVER. We just want to put it off until we find the right time.
>>
>>25484072
We don't know she might be able to fire of spirit bombs at this point. She can already use kamehameha lasers.
>>
>>25484088
This is the best time if we can convince Fang to fund it.
>>
>>25484105
For a myriad of reasons already mentioned, no, it's not
>>
>>25484102

Shadow Beam. Shadow Assault. And now we can get fucking SCHATTENKRIEG.
>>
>>25484009
If we don't switch places immediately, we won't be able to.

>>25484012
Desummoning would probably be the harder part of the test.
Besides, we can fake it if need be with compress+Shadowmeld+Blinking out of the room.

We can use up as much mana as we need, Fang's got a mana pool for us.

>>25484052
She is a spirit mage, they specialize in summoning to a degree.

She is also the child of a demon to some extent, so that should be taken into consideration when assessing power and potential.

>>25484059
It was never about the EXP, and always about the consequences of using servant.

Plus, acting as a summon does not remove the possibility of servant.
>>
>>25484036

I'm not really sidestepping it. I just didn't think you actually wanted to ask Flint about his magical heredity or lack thereof (over which, for some reason, he seems to feel some embarrassment) right in front of the archmage.

Just remind me next time.
>>
>>25484137
And have you considered the consequences of not using it?

The only semi valid reasoning for not using servant is that the xp could be better spent.

But if we can get the xp for free, it's no longer an issue.
>>
>>25484167
I'm betting that Flint is a bastard son from an affair that his dad had with a lightborn, and his brother put the curse on him to claim the throne and everythign else for himself
>>
>>25484167
I meant asking Fang about the nature of it in general, not asking Flint about his.

I don't care about those measly 15 exp. I don't want to lock our friend into the body of a nine year old for all eternity, nor do I think she needs the extra power. She probably is the most talented spirit mage in the world. She just needs help to start her career.
>>
>>25484222

But seriously, what the fuck? Does this seem like that kind of quest to you?

but what if she's his great great great great great grandmother, is it ok then?

>>
>>25484254

Just checking, SM. Never hurts to.
>>
>>25484240
The body of a 9 yr old thing is not a valid argument. It can be circumvented multiple ways.

And she's aiming to become the leader of Backstab McMurder school. She needs all the power she can get.
>>
>>25484254
Well SM, this is /tg/. You should take a look at the shit that's pulled on tgchan if you want incredible examples of such things.
>>

>>25484273

I seem to have missed those. Could you elaborate
> she's aiming to become the leader of Backstab McMurder school
In all likelihood she doesn't care about that. Let's not confuse what her uncle wants with what she wants. Besides she WILL become the leader regardless of whether we make her a Servant. She already has the talent and the support for it, she just needs some time.
>>
>>25484240
>She probably is the most talented spirit mage in the world.
You're really overestimating her. And even if she does have the most natural talent, all of the other major players all have centuries of preparation. You're placing too much weight on innate ability.
>>
>>25484322
Time is an issue Yi Fang has been concerned about.
>>
>I seem to have missed those. Could you elaborate
Once things have gotten less crazy and if she wants to grow up, we can just remove servant and let her get older.
Or she can do the form hiding / changing thing that Fang is using to not look like a lich.

And that's assuming it does agelock.
>>
>>25484322
>Besides she WILL become the leader regardless of whether we make her a Servant.
>thinking Abby is immortal just because she's a major npc.
May I direct your attention to the lulzy death of the Duke?
>>
>>25484380
That death was way too anti-climactic that I have trouble believing it is at all what it seems.
>>
>>25484393
SM pretty well confirmed he is dead OOC. We still should check of course but Im sad to say we pretty much lost the duke to shitty rolls.
>>
>>25484380
If SM pulls something like that with Abby-Sabby I'll get his area location or his wi-fi zone via a connections reader and work towards finding him from there, then lynching will occur.
>>
>>25484330
>all of the other major players all have centuries of preparation.
I seem to have missed the part where Fang's lichdom was kept a secret because of how unusual and forbidden it was but his enemies don't have those problems.
>You're really overestimating her.
Ok, let's say she is not the single most talented but one of the top five talents in the world with extreme support. Still works.

>>25484355
He has waited for hundreds of years. He can wait a decade for his niece. If he seriously tries to make his nine year old niece the archmage of spirit he obviously only wants her to be his puppet in any case.

Why do WE suddenly want Abigail to become archmage as soon as possible? Of course in the future it is where she fits best but she is nine years old for heavens sake!
>>
>>25484421
No one is this quest has plot armor. We can die, Flint can die. Abby can die! And she is much, much more vulnerable then Flint or Us.
>>
>>25484380
How would her being a servant help her with that? If there is lulzy death that happens despite powerful bodyguards, protections and her own magic I don't think being a servant will really matter.
>>
>>25484453
servant can give her an added DC to dodge the flying sword. Or she can blink away. Or she can heal via shadow eater. As far as I know Spirit lacks actually healing spells.

Unless you want her to become a nine year old loli-lich. That would work.
>>
>>25484428
>with extreme support. Still works.
So why wouldn't we carry that support as far as we can?
>>
>>25484472
In the case of extremely bad rolls as cause of death she would probably blink right into the attack.

>>25484361
Thanks. While I dislike the second option the first sounds nice.
>>
>>25484513
At this point you're just arguing that getting stronger does not help one survive.

If this is your argument, we have no reason to buy any upgrades for ourself. It wouldn't help anyway.
>>
>>25484527
I'm not arguing that strength doesn't help at all. I'm arguing that strength doesn't help (much) against crit failures and that she will survive pretty much anything that is not a crit failure because unlike us she doesn't go out to fight people all day and has the best protections the Archmage of Spirit himself can provide.

Actually I'm not even against making her a servant anymore. I just don't consider most of your reasons convincing.
>>
>>25484604
I can see lots of ways for her various protections to fall away. Giving her an edge would definately be something to consider when we are not around personally.

If Yi Fang has one bad moment of inattention, which he will, even if his enemies have to manufacture it.

Or her assigned bodygaurd is dealt with in some manner.

Or a classroom 'accident' happens.

This is Murder!Hogwarts. Its not called that for fun.
>>
>>25484604
So let me get this straight.

You're just arguing that you don't think she needs as much protection as we can give her while she stays at Scholomance.

She's had attempts on her life every other day so far.

And you think it's cool to skate by on just "ehh, probably good enough" when we could do better.

Why? I cannot wrap my head around your reasoning for this.
>>
>>25484638
>Or her assigned bodygaurd is dealt with in some manner.
This is the biggest one I can think of. Magcock went and roflstomped Adavan. Surely there's someone else that's smart enough to wait for more than a week to plot things out before attempting assassination.
>>
>>25484513
>In the case of extremely bad rolls as cause of death she would probably blink right into the attack.
A crit fail for a a normal human vs a mage is certain death.
A critfail for us vs a mage might just be getting singed by a bit of fire and losing a tad more hp than we expected. Or maybe we only get something like 1xp for a CONSUME.

Bad rolls have different consequences for different power levels.
>>
>>25484646
I just don't think that being a shadow angel will be that much of a defence boost. It's an amazing general boost and if she learns how to use shadow magic it will increase her defences considerably. She could, however, improve her spirit magic instead which would have nearly the same effect.

> attempts on her life every other day so far.
They are just probing her defences right now. No one would throw away perfectly good assassins just like that. The first serious attempt will most likely happen in a couple of weeks and with far more preparation and sophistication.

In fact the servanting would be most effective if it was done when they think they have already figured out how to kill her. They prepare everything to kill a talented spirit mage and then BAM suddenly she uses shadow magic.
>>
>>25484698
I'd say thats not so much because we are powerful but because we are hella durable. The biggest reason for me to make her a shadow angel would be the resistance to many kinds of magic magic because that is the most likely way they will try to kill her. The added power will only be important when she has learned how to use it.
>>
>>25484702
+1 critical thinking points for that idea.
>>
>>25484702
>She could, however, improve her spirit magic instead which would have nearly the same effect.
Except it's not an "either or" situation. We have Fang feed us some magic shit, we supersonic to the pool, and servant her.

Bam. Done. Took 10 minutes. Now she has a larger mana pool to use for learning magic and buffs to all base stats.

There is no reason not to do it.
>>
>With the assistance of a mana pool, you can make any sentient soul a servant for 15 EXP. Your servants are stronger, faster, and have more magical power than normal individuals of their race.

>Your servants are stronger, faster,
>faster
You do realize our greatest defence for the longest time was our speed right?
>>
>>25484729
>There is no reason not to do it.
Yep, no arguing that.

I meant that the main limiting factor for her capability to do magic is the time she spends training and not the raw amount of power she has.
>>
>>25484752
Personally, I think its best that she learns how to use both Spirit and Shadow magic together as soon as possible.

That, and her being able to learn Nightblaze will be really fucking useful.
>>
>>25484728
I can see it before me. They prepare everything, lure away Adavan and Fang, disable her protective items and use a giant magic bomb for overkill. In the middle of the crater remains Abigail, who is now immune the the destructive forces of both spirit and shadow magic and extremely resistant to everything else.
>>
Seeing if we can get Fang to fund the servant upgrades too would be very good.
>>
>>25484779
he basically just told us to go eat Abigail's summon and replace it.
