Back from our commercial break, it's VALKYRIAN MERCS QUEST!

Archive: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Valkyrian%20Mercs%20Quest
Pastebin: http://pastebin.com/XmuisFTk

Don't know what Valkyria Chronicles is? Check it out here! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valkyria_Chronicles

You are JAGER STURMFUHRER, leader of the fledgling mercenary company DEMONS OF RANDGRIZ. In addition to fighting Imps for money and vengeance, you have your own private mission to hunt down Karla, your former fiance who sided with the Imperials and destroyed your home.

You first arrived in the Federation nation of Albion to help defend it against a possible amphibious attack. However, your boots barely hit the deck before you were assigned a mission to break up a spy ring. However, through a chain of extraordinary events, you not only smashed the spy ring apart, but also managed to capture an Imperial u-boat (mostly) intact, and figh off an Imperial amphibious invasion by defeating their leader, Belkan Knight Sir Fleisher.

You've decided that it's now time to move on to greener (or at least more profitable) pastures. You and the Demons left Albion for the besieged nation of Ustio.

Your first mission went well enough, routing a platoon of Imperial soldiers threatening the city of Valais' supply lines. Then you destroyed an Imperial superheavy artillery battery, taking pressure off the city's beleaguered defenders and giving them a chance to counterattack. You also took care of a personal mission for Qyburn, and in return, he's given you a new and powerful (if only experimental) weapon! You also captured an Imperial sniper who you convinced to join your cause.

Currently, you're taking some R&R ahead of a major operation, so you're enjoying what little free time you have. Or, you at least were until you got news of trouble brewing.

Yay! Mercs quest.

Command, I had a question. I kinda came up with a little short of a hypothetical situation in which Elsa and Alek explain how they met. I wanted to write it up, but I don't want to muck up your thread.

Opinion?

"Okay, what the hell is going on?" You sigh, facepalming.

"Well, the reports are pretty varied and vague, but it seems like there's some serious street fighting going down."

You can only think of a few people in the Demons who'd get caught up in something like that.

"But we should be pretty close." Elizabeth adds in. "If we hurry, we can beat them there by a few minutes."

You sprint down to where the commotion is apparently happening, Elizabeth following close behind. It's actually not that hard to find, considering the small crowd gathering around the mouth of an alley.

"Well it looks like we found the right place." You mutter to nobody in particular. Pushing your way through the crowd, you see a melee going on in the alley with maybe fifteen or twenty people involved. You immediately see Ramirez and Brillant in the fray, which you're not quite surprised. What does surprise you is Isolde and Heloise in the mix, though it's more like Isolde shielding Heloise from the worst of the melee. You also catch glimpses of uniforms of Ustian soldiers and some of the Vergeltung crew.

"MPs are going to be here in two minutes, sir." Elizabeth warns you. "What's the plan?"

>>

IF they're trying to out and out murder one of our people just because of the color of their hair? Yes. We are Jager Sturmfuhrer. We are known to be a fair man, until pushed. Such a barbaric display? It would PUSH us.
However, it seems to be a normal brawl, so we should just resolve it in a calm manner.

>>
>>25460815

>Ramirez! Suppress those Rioters with your Fists!
>>
Even if we did fire a warning shot, can we really keep them from outright brawling again? Last I looked, we're only some mercs looking for payday. The way I see it, the best we could do is to bail out our demons and let the others keep brawling their faces out.
>>
>>25461050
Pretty sure they picked a fight with us and the based Vergeltung crew backed us up.
>>
>>25461050
The Vergletung crewmen are basically ours as well. So its us vs. the normal soldiers. We need to stop it and try to stop it happening as much as we can, if only to protect us and ours.
>>
I have a feeling that if we have a beach episode here, it'll be a very short one as we're chased out of Ustio.
>>
>>25460815
Well, you're short on time, and just jumping into the melee isn't going to resolve the matter any faster, so you decide to go for the next best option. Sure, firing a weapon near a military base was probably a monumentally stupid idea, but you really want to break this up before the MPs arrive and start cracking skulls.

Raising your pistol, you make sure not to aim it straight up in the air and instead aim up high at a brick wall. The loud BANG of your weapon rings out through the tight narrows of the alley, catching everybody's attention.

"WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON HERE, SOLDIERS!??" You yell in your best impersonation of your drill instructor. It was dark, so there was a chance they could mistake you for a superior officer or something like that. "BREAK UP THIS FIGHT AND DISPERSE OR VALKRUR HELP ME I WILL END IT FOR YOU!"

The sergeant throws his own punch in response but the move is so damn predictable you see it coming a mile away. You easily sidestep and the sergeant's fist passes by your face and straight into the brick wall behind you. You can hear his knuckles cracking against the brickwork and your ears are filled with his yowl of pain. An uppercut silences him and knocks him out for good.

With their ringleader down, and the whistle of the MPs drawing ever closer, the Ustian soldiers decide to flee.

"Alright Demons, we are leaving!" You hiss at your squadmates.

"Pssst! Over here!" You see Elizabeth waving you over to a side alley. Apparently she had been busy while you were distracting the Ustians.

Everybody makes a mad scramble into the side alley, which leads to the other side of the bock, and not a moment too soon. MPs burst into the alley behind you expecting a fight, but all they find is an unconscious sergeant.

After suggesting to the Vergeltung crew to return to their ship, you turn with a hard stare to Ramirez, Brillant, Isolde, and Heloise, who are busy trying to catch their breath.

"You all have a LOT of explaining to do." You say angrily. "I don't want to have to explain to Freyberg why my men were beating the crap out of his on their weekend! Which, by the way, very good job there, people, but still! What started the fight and who threw the first punch?!"

"Sir! That would be me!" Ramirez steps forwards proudly, not an ounce of regret or apology in his stance or voice. "I threw the first punch, but they started it!"

"Explain." You narrow your eyes.

"Well, as you might have expected, me and Brillant decided to go check out the local bars. Heloise wanted to tag along and we managed to rope Isolde into coming too. Seems like Heloise was hung about something, because she was just downing shot after shot and generally being mopey."

You take a look at Heloise and you can see that she is indeed very drunk. Barely conscious, in fact. You suppose that's why she was largely out of the fight, necessitating Isolde's protection. "Go on."

"Well, we're trying to get her to talk about what's getting her down, and then Sergeant Chucklefuck and his squad roll in. We give each other the stink eye, but we ignore each other so I think we're good for the night." Ramirez sighs. "Then we take our eyes off Heloise for a second, and next thing we know, Sergeant Chucklefuck and some of his guys are leading her on. Isolde tells them Heloise is drunk in no condition for that sort of treatment, they tell her to fuck off, and well, the rest is sorta history."

And with this, time to put on my writefag hat.

Okay, so my first attempt at /tg/ writing, don’t murder me. I found it funny and thought you might like it.
This is Elsa and Alek chatting with people at a shindig hosted by Jager and REDACTED.
>Elsa’s view.
“So how did you and Alek meet? I’ve rarely seen a couple so devoted as you two.”
“Oh we met during the war.”
“So many did, were you in the same unit?”
“Oh, not at first, not until I joined the Demons.”
“Then how did you meet? Did your units work together at some point?”
*laughs* “No, not exactly. Actually when we first met I had just shot Jager twice.”
“…You what?”
“Oh I never told you? I met Alek while I was still fighting for the Empire. The first time we saw each other was through our scopes.”
“…And you still got together?”
“Oh yes, Alek, Jager and the Demons were there trying to stop me from holding up the Ustian advance. I got Jager twice but he had on extra armor for that reason. Then Alek and Tarin found my blind before I decided to move. I found him too, but I only clipped his headset, he got my shoulder. It hurt of course, but when I realized it was another sniper…” *Smiles happily*
“…What happened after that? I take it they didn’t mistreat you then.”
>>
>>25462626
We got one more day and two more people to talk to before the mission starts... Who knows.
>>
>>25462626

Some of the early threads made it pretty obvious that Heloise had an interest in Alek.
>>
>>25462639
“You kissed a man you didn’t know and who had just shot you not a day before?”
“Yes! It was love at first sight I tell you. On my part at least, he seemed kind of stunned really.”
“I’m almost afraid to ask but how did you move from there?”
“Well Alek and Jaeger came to visit me after their next mission and they decided to let me out of the sub to get some air. Jaeger suggested Alek show me his knew rifle and we take some shots together. It was a really big one, .50 caliber. I’d never shot one before so my aim was horrible, it kicked everywhere. But Alek…Alek just crawled right next to me, putting my arms in the right spots and helping me aim. Then the rifle went off and it was a perfect hit.” *shudders a bit* “It was amazing, the kick of the rifle, the smell of the sea and cordite, and Alek’s body against mine. I couldn’t help myself, I jumped him right there on the deck, in full view of the whole harbor. The rest is history.”
“…”
>Alek’s version.
“Alek my good man, whatever did you do to get Elsa so enamored with you? I’ve never seen a girl so happy.”
“Uhm, well, it’s rather embarrassing actually.”
“Come on man, it can’t be that bad.”
“…I shot her.”
“…You what?”
“I shot her. It was during the war and we went on a mission to hunt down a sniper that turned out to be her. I managed to wing her shoulder; she nearly took of my head, but got my earpiece instead.”
“And she liked that?”
“…The next time I saw her she was behind bars and she still managed to nearly suck out my tonsils.”
“…That has got to be the weirdest first date I’ve ever heard of. I dare ask how you finally got together.”
>>
>>25462626
What fan speculation? She tried hitting on Alek before already. We even called her out on it and she basically admitted to it all flustered.
>>
>>25462639
>>25462657
You couldn't wait until after the thread...
>>
>>25462657
“…We came back from a mission a few days later and Jager thought it would be a good idea if I spent some time with her. So we let her out and I showed her the new rifle Jager had gotten me. It was a big fucker, .50 cal. Elsa had never shot one before so I showed her how, put her arms in the right spot, rifle firmly against her shoulder. We hit the target and it wasn’t until then that I realized I was right up against her from showing her the rifle.”
“…What happened next?”
“…We had our first time together.”
“You went after her on top of the sub?!”
“No, she jumped me on top of the sub.”
“…Holy shit.”
“Yeah.”
“You are one lucky bastard.”

And done, Hope you found this amusing, see you later, sorry for interrupting.

True. But if he really didn't want to I think he would just say no. Just because he doesn't really show spinelessness he shows a inferiority complex. >tfw Elsa was only interested in Alek's skill and her first impression of him and dumps him later because he's nothing like what she wants in a partner or expected.

It would be a pretty realistic turn of events, honestly.

Also, I'm actually glad for this turn of events. Romance is too often just thrown in for the fuck of it or at the end and it becomes all sunshine and rainbows. It's nice to see some unrequited love, consequences, and have the romance add some actual dynamism to the story.

"It's just not fair... y'know? All my friends, Coleen, Lynn, Mags... and now Alek, t-they've all got someone.... but not meeeeeeeeee. No, poor l-little Heloise has gotta be forever alooooneeee...

"B-but, it's not like I'm angry a-at Alek or anything. I-I'm happy he's got s-someone he can be happy with..."

At his point Heloise starts nodding off. If you want to say anything, now's the time.

Hmm... I. Damn.

Well, since she's straightforwardly going "Aww, I'm happy for my friends, but I wish I could have what they got, too!" we can't just go "But you have friends!" to counter it.

Because its not about not having friends. But rather not being as... fortunate as her friends..

Well. Jager could sympathize, to a degree, I imagine... Given that HIS situation was even more shittier...

Just not sure what to say, though.

My inner demons ask me to fan the flames and say something like "You know, Elsa's an aggressive one, but maybe you can get Alek to notice you if you try harder."

This does seem to be a recurring theme for us, doesn't it...

One of these days, something will REALLY catch on fire, rather than just us speculating on that climactic-duel-on-top-of-a-burning-tank-etc-etc thing.

Desire to waifu. Rising. Must resist. Anyway.

You'd be lying if you said that you weren't trying to think up of a long, beautifully worded speech to get Heloise's spirits up. But then you remember that she's still pretty damn drunk and might not really understand what you're saying. Hell, she might not even remember this night at all.

"I'm sure you'll find someone, Heloise." You say simply and firmly.

"Thanks... Captain...means a lot.. to hear... you... say... that..." Heloise begins nodding off, and a soft snoring sound signifies she's finally fallen asleep.

"Poor girl." Elizabeth frowns. "I really hope she does find somebody."

"Or maybe it'll be the other way around." You shrug. "Like a friend told me earlier, love's a flower that can bloom anywhere."

"I never took you as a romantic, Captain."

"I'm not."

You walk the rest of the way back to the barracks in silence. Elizabeth helps you tuck Heloise in bed before leaving to help Qyburn brainstorm some more inventions. If that's her idea of fun, well, she was already a pretty odd girl.

Checking the hour, as well as your own stamina, you decide to get some sleep. Thankfully it's dreamless this time, and you wake up at a reasonable hour this time.

I as well, unless the circumstances seem that they would particularly sway him one way or another. For example, if she literally tells him to kill her, because she doesn't want to live with how she hurt him, I could see Jager deciding that no, he won't kill her. Now, whether he would take her back in that situation, that would still be up to the coin.
>>

Of course.

You decide to go check on Heloise first. After all, she was in a pretty bad shape last night. The least you could do was to see if she was still okay.

You find Heloise, and a couple other Demons, in the mess hall cradling a large cup of coffee. She's obviously hungover and still tired, but you notice that she's got her regular smile.

"Hey, Heloise, I heard you kind of went overboard last night." You say, trying to stay vague. "How're you feeling right now?"

"Tired... but oddly happy, like I got a weight off my chest." Heloise shrugs. "I don't even remember what happened last night."

I inda feel that the attack on his home was a show of exactly how much Karla loved Jager, she was the supreme commander of the Imperial forces, she could have been anywhere else, and in fact should never have been anywhere near there, but because it was Jagers home, the home of the person she loved, she couldn't let anyone else lead the attack.

Which may be reading too much into it, but Jager would certainly understand that.
>>
>>25464552

Kind of like this.
>>
>>25464555
Woah man, that's pretty deep. If I were Merc, I'd be like "... Yeah, that was exactly what was meant." I think you're reading too much into it, but I like it nonetheless.
>>
>>25464555
I think he'd be less offended by her merely serving them elsewhere than her leading an attack. The fact we have yet ot hear anything about Jager's family suggests they died in the attack.

I don't think it'd be something just overlooked by either of them as Karla seems to be feeling some guilt about it. While they may still love each other, I doubt they'd be able to rekindle their relationship that easily if at all.

That is barring his family magically popping up saying "we're alright"

You decide not to bring up the issue from last night. It seems like Heloise has gotten over that little stumbling block without even realizing it.

"Well, I think it's great that you're feeling better." You give a friendly grin. "Look, if you got any problems or are feeling down or anything, you can always talk to me."

"Thanks, I'll keep that in mind." Heloise smiles.

You then decide to track down Tarin. You're honestly curious to see how she spends her free time. Well, to be more fair, you're not doing much tracking, it's more like "letting Tarin know you're looking for her and SHE tracks you down".

"Oh, hey there, Tarin." You say as you feel a very familiar presence behind you.

"Looking for me, sir?" Tarin asks.

"Actually, I got his shiny new rifle from Qyburn." You say. "Apparently he's claiming that it's almost silent, but I haven't had a chance actually test-"

"Silent?"

You suddenly realize that Tarin's face is now literally inches from yours. Despite being slightly shorter than you are, it does nothing to lessen the intensity of her stare.

"Show me."

"Whoa, hold up there." You say, trying to back away. Apparently this was what Tarin was like when she was excited. "Just give me a little space first!"

As you walk to the armor to retrieve the Gallian-Q, you are acutely aware of Tarin closely tailing you. She's not even bothering to hide the fact that she's there either. It's like her stare was literally glued to the back of your head.

Finally, you remove the Gallian-Q from its secure locker and hand it over to Tarin, who tries to hide it, but you can tell she's marveling over the rifle, carefully going over every detail and nook and cranny of it. It's odd. The closest equivalent you can think of is a cat batting away at a ball of yarn.

You stand back and let her enjoy the moment as she admires the rifle.

"It's an interesting design." She says. "Definitely looks like something Qyburn would design."

"If you want, it's yours." You say.

"Really?!" Tarin says just a bit too quickly and loudly. She blinks and her cheeks redden ever so slightly.

"Of course!" You laugh. "What makes you think I wouldn't give it to you?"

"I was j-just making sure." Tarin says quickly. "Can we shoot it? Please? Right now?"

"Hey, it's your rifle." You shrug. You blink and all of a sudden she's gone.

Wondering just how the hell she moves like that, you go to the one place where you would be guaranteed to find her: the firing range. Sure enough, Tarin is already set up there. She gives the rifle several shots, though you could swear that if you weren't looking right at it, you would never realize a gun was being fired.

"Amazing." Tarin mutters.

You ultimately decide on Gina's. It's not quite as well known as the other places, and you're honestly not sure how Freyberg knew about it, but apparently it's popularity relied heavily on word of mouth. That kind of person is more common than you'd think.
I rarely vote on anything important, I'd rather just read along.
>>
>>25467268
Given how small our band of misfits is I wouldn't think so.
>>
>>25467294
Then we must look into a dress uniforms! Can't be going around in BDUs all the time.
>>
>>25467301
I'd rather stay as far away from a dress uniform as possible shits uncomfortable.
>>
>>25467301
Hey, sooner or later some country may even want to have us around for a celebration and give out minor decorations instead of chasing us out, and wouldn't we be oh so embarrassed to not have something snazzy to dress up in s a unit?
>>
>>25467268

Given we're mercs? Not likely. If anything, the only semblance of a standardized uniform we'd have would be a unit patch.
>>
>>25467314
Depends on the dress uniform we're talking about. Some aren't /that/ bad. Most (read army) are.
>>
>>25467340
I'm actually quite a fan of the WWII army dress uniform. Those were actually pretty comfortable.
>>
>>25467340
that's actually inaccurate. Some dress uniforms aren't bad, most (read issued to enlisted as a no size fits any human known) aren't tailored and thus uncomfortable as hell.
>>
>>25467328
pretty much this, It would be very out of character for the demons to hand anything resembling dress blues, they aint those kind of mercs

You briefly consider having Tarin change up her wardrobe, but you ultimately decide against it. You're already going far outside her comfort zone, so no need to make it worse.

Getting to Gina's is a bit of a chore, having to navigate through a bunch of side streets and alleys in order to reach. However, Tarin doesn't seem to mind. Scarily enough, she navigates the lesser known paths with a frightening amount of familiarity.

"I've been through here several times before." Tarin shrugs.

Lunch itself is rather uneventful. The family that runs Gina's are very tolerant, and don't mind serving Darcsens, which more than you can say for several other places in this city. You order several dishes, trying to vary them as much as possible so Tarin can get the full experience.

Tarin's reaction to the food is borderline adorable. She gives it a thorough inspection, as if she's afraid an Imperial will suddenly burst out of the plate and start shooting. She cautiously spears a a piece of ravioli and slips it into her mouth. You then see her eyes light up in shock.

"It's good, isn't it?" You grin.

Tarin nods rapidly.

"My my, it seems your girlfriend is certainly enjoying the food." The elderly matron who runs the restaurant smiles as she passes by.

Wait, did she just say-

Then an ugly feeling forms in your stomach. You have just realized that you have inadvertently gone on out on a date with Tarin.

"Tarin."

"Yes?" Tarin says between mouthfuls.

"You can never speak of this to ANYONE. Got it? Not even to the other Demons."

"Roger." Tarin says, without question.

By the end, you're slightly regretting your decisions, both due to your wallet and to your self image. However, you believe it's all worth it to show Tarin a little more of the world she never got to enjoy.

"Thanks for the meal." Tarin nods to you. "It was very educational."

"Yeah, and you got two more. Don't forget."

"I won't, sir."

And like that, Tarin disappears, off to do whatever she does when nobody is observing her.

Well, at that's left now is Sam. Likewise, she's not too hard to find. She's in the office, sorting out the Demons' mail.

"Heeeeeeey Sam!" You say, entering the room.

"Oh, hey there, Cap!" Sam looks up. "Just taking care of some mail and last minute paperwork."

>Oh, okay. What are you working on?

"Wait a minute, it's the weekend, and you're WORKING!? UNACCEPTABLE!"

You then physically pick up Sam and carry her out of the office.

"Ah! Cap! What are you doing?!" Sam gasps.

"You can work later, fun times now." You say determinedly. "My only regret is I did not discover you working in secret sooner so I could have interrupted it then."

"B-but the paperwork!"

"I'll tell Ramirez to finish it."

"But he'll just make it WORSE!" She wails.

"Nonsense." You say. "Besides, it's our last day of leave and I don't remember seeing you take any time off whatsoever!"

"Somebody help meeeeee!" Sam cries.

"YOU WILL IGNORE HER PATHETIC PLEAS FOR HELP." You bellow for the whole base to hear. "It's time for FUN, Sam. And by god, you will enjoy it!"

And so the evening starts off with you carrying a girl off base over your shoulder against her will. Surely this is a sign that this day will end well.

>And that's it for tonight! Tune in on Sunday night, 6-7pm PST for the conclusion of the R&R events, and maybe some side story content!
