>Don't be afraid to jump in if you are new!

You are a creature of simple desires. You desire to eat things. With every delicious thing you eat you grow, morph and change.

You recently caused quite a fuss in a sushi shop, and had to leave before you ate everything. You got away mostly unscathed, except for losing a few feathers to the bite of the nasty, undelicious ventilation fan! Your body, near your back legs, feels rather bare without them.

Feeling a little beaten up, you decided to head over to the nearby gunshop. You know you are best at surprising the delicious creatures, but still lack raw power for straight fights. You found an open window and slipped between the bars behind. The room you dropped into appears to be some sort of canteen, with a counter and bench with many seats and a wall full of flashing lights and metal boxes.

You can hear voices talking through the doorless entrance to the corridor, but more worrying is that from right behind and above, you hear a sharp click. You turn and see a small creature, standing on top of a glass and plastic box. It is about knee high to one of the humans you ate before. It has a triangular head with large eyes and sharp mandibles, and it has wickedly curved blades on its forarms, folded and ready to strike. It doesn't look delicious. It clicks again, staring at you.

What do you do?

>When you feast, you also completely heal.
>>
>>25427645
Oh holy shit, I think we just accidentally entered a cock fight. Really look at this fucker, posture, attitude, fighting ability, anything we can discern from its appearance. Back away, but slowly, so as not to provoke it.
>>
>>25427738
Actually, changing to this. We are still very squishy.
>>
>>25427645
Tell it. "Sit"
>>
You back away from the creature slowly. The creature follows you with it's eyes, even in the dim light. It crawls down on four legs, with it's two raised blades held ready. Its feelers trace out patterns in the air. It has a carapaced lower body, hiding what you think are wings. It gestures toward you, jabbing it's arms quickly towards and clicking again, softly.

You puff up your feathers and open your toothy maw...
"Sit."
The word surprises you, a little. But perhaps more surprising is how the insectoid creature reacts. It stops moving forwards, and places its abdomen on the ground!

You hear more voices from out beyond the corridor.
>>
>>25427840
Is there any place we can hide? Perhaps some ceiling light or a rafter.
>>
>>25427645
I'm envisioning this thing as a very, VERY large praying mantis. This is not something we should be fucking around with. We need to consider its instincts, because it may not be as intelligent as us, but it is almost certainly faster. For anyone who didn't grow up in mantis country, they're actually pretty chill. They are not afraid of anything, and they rely on a single super-fast kill strike. We are almost certainly not faster than this thing, and we may or may not be able to take a strike. I cannot stress enough that a direct strike will invariably result in injury.

I would also like to look around the area, we need to know if this is actually a cockfight or if I'm just being paranoid.
>>
>>25427840
Tell it "Stay." Then lets go see about finding something tasty.
>>
Rolled 5

>>25427840
huh that actually worked. get close to it and call it a good boy then once its guard is lowered bite its head off.
>>
>>25427895
This is prudent.
>>
>>25427840
Huh, I didn't think this would work. I second the "Stay" command, just to see what kind of control we have over this thing. Examine the area. Are we surrounded by delicious meatbags?

Our best option may be to pretend to be someone's prized murder critter. We can rapidly gain evolutions and then eventually murder our owner. There is DEFINITELY something to be said for sticking with this.
>>
>>25427899
Na bro, we'd get no upgrade. Who knows, maybe he'll become mantisbro and chill with us, helping us rise against the tasty sentient beings.
>>
>>25427963
Why are you saging?

Also, I think we would, this thing is alive, its around our size, and just because it may not be sentient does not mean we wouldn't evolve. I suppose at this point we'll see, either way.
>>
>>25427645
And I was just about to go to sleep.
>>
You have a look around the room. You can't see any delicious things, but you can hear them talking in another room. There are many boxes on the bench. With a bit of focus you remember their names: Fridge, microwave, cupboard, toaster. Hanging from wires on the roof is a light, but it is currently turned off.

"Stay," you tell the not delicious creature, a mantis of some sort, and it stays where it is, only tilting it's head, and clicking again.

You recognise the thing it was sitting on as a television. Does it have a nest up there, perhaps?

You peer out of each of the two doorways. One leads to an empty corridor, stained in places. There are two doors at the end of the corridor, from underneath both shines light, and from the right hand one you hear the voices. Tracking back to the canteen, mantis still stationary, you peer out the other door, left open a crack. Inside you see many of the nasty metal rods that burned you. Guns.

The voices momentarily get louder, then a bang, and you hear footsteps approach from the corridor.
>>
>>25428044
Saging is polite because it bumps the thread less so haters don't bitch as much. The only thing negative about Sage is the reputation it's built as a "downvote". It literally does nothing (As opposed to a regular post, which bumps.)
>>
>>25428112
get above the door. our claws should be good enough to climb walls I hope.
>>
>>25428112
Run! They have guns, a pet, and they possibly outnumber us.

Let's not take the chance.
>>
>>25428161
>The guns lie idle, on racks and pegs. They are in the other direction of the voices.
>But this IS a gunshop, you are expecting the fleshbags to be armed.
>>
>>25428112
Move towards the mantis thing, tell it "stay" and stop if it continues to do anything, and attempt to get close enough to it to kill it in a single blow. If not possible, stop and move away.

>>25428113
Fair enough, I appreciate the explanation, I was just curious!

Also, I'll try to do one or two draws tonight, OP has final say on whats drawn, since this quest is fucking rad and it is him that is producing it.
>>
>>25428161
we went to a gunshop, aboard a pirate base. what did you expect?
>>
>>25428191
Hey man, I still think we should keep out of buildings and stick to the homeless until we can reliably take out a target without losing the upper hand--we've had way too many close calls.
>>
>>25428208
The only upgrade homeless people would give is begging.

OP, can we go into the gun room?
>>
>>25428227
Yeah, right? I hate how they have those mandatory DNA wipes for the homeless.
>>
>>25428243
Yeah, homeless people don't have bodies they're just large blobs of begginess. But once we eat enough we can just beg for more powers!
>>
I don't wanna bail out of the gunshop before at least one kill. Plus the guy is on the way to this room right now.
>>
>>25428112
Just wait. He'll think his pet has made a new friend.
>>
>>25428182
>Feel free to draw whatever you think would look great, I love your work, and drawfags are amazing!

You leap up above the doorway, embedding your claws in the soft plaster of the walls, and hanging there. The mantis continues watching you from its place in the middle of the room.

You stay there, puffing up your feathers slightly, as the footsteps get closer. Then a hand enters the room, flicking the light switch by the doorway. A harsh brightness shines out as the light flickers madly, before light fills the room and the tube steadies.

"Hey Abraham, what'cha doing there?"

A human walks into the room, all greasy and delicious. Your mouth waters just looking at it. It is wearing loose clothing of patchy shades, and holds a can in one hand.
>>
>>25428300
Leap on him.Rip and tear to his spine.
>>
>>25428300
Don't react just yet. If we attack him, the mantis will sure as hell go after us. It's got the intelligence of a dog, it'll sure as hell have the reactions of one. Stay put and wait, or try to find a better hiding place.
>>
>>25428112
Sneak into the door that lead to the guns.
>>
>>25428300
I AM LITERALLY BLUSHING I HOPE YOU ARE HAPPY.

Alright, as a denizen of /k/ I'm just gonna go ahead and say the guys at the gun store are gonna kill the shit out of us if we try anything. It MAY behoove us to try to pretend to be a pet, so we have a lair to strike from. These mofos will be able to defend us really well.

I vote to make a noise and ruffle our feathers to look adorable.
>>
So, I realized something very important last thread:

We don't have a sense of time, which means we don't have a sense of -timing-. This is bad, because any time we are met with an obstacle that would require the knowledge of how quickly we can do something, such as, say, dodging an attack or slipping between fan blades, we would be at a serious disadvantage.
>>
>>25428300
Wait. Maybe see if you can find the wire that controls the light so we can tear it.
>>
>>25428356
We don't know what time is, but that doesn't necessarily mean we don't understand timing. Temporal awareness does not equal awareness of timing.
>>
>>25428300
Let's not attack him just yet and continue to observe him.
>>
>>25428356
Can we just retcon that?
>>
>>25428429
The fan incident made it painfully obvious.

We're capable of basic estimation of our abilities, but a true sense of timing is lost.

>It is creating quite a mess of your feathers.== You aren't sure how to estimate it, but you can see it making circles.==You might be able to duck through, were you about half as long as you are.
>>
>>25428356
>You don't know how long things take in a non-immediate sense. You can dodge and bite things just fine. You know how to use any upgrades/morphs you have.

You wait, puffing your feathers up as much as you can. The human walks over to the fridge, and grabs six more cans just like the one it was holding from inside. There are many many more inside, you can see.

"Abraham, go to bed." The human points towards the television in the corner of the room. The mantis turns and walks away...

You lean out from the wall, and with a quick snip with your mandibles, cut the power cable to the lights. You are briefly shocked, but the light dies instantly.

"Ah damnit! I knew we should have replaced that broken fixture." The human grumbles in the dim light from open fridge. "Fred," it shouts, "Light's out again!"

While it's distracted, you decide to sneak into the gun room...

You leap onto the light, then the floor beyond. Your feathers cushion your landing, and you remember to tuck your claws in, so they don't scrape. Perfect. Soundless. You scrabble past the ajar door. Yes. Excellent. Nobody will know you are here!

Your feathers puff out in happiness... and bump a small round thing. The thing rolls gently across the table until it's handle runs into a metal bin, colliding with a metallic gong noise.

"Abraham! You're meant to take care of the vermin around here. Get in there and eat it."

Uh oh.

You quickly scan the room. It is dark in here, the light is also off. In one corner there is an impromptu office, with a keyboard and mouse and much paperwork. Most of the room is full of wooden boxes, and the walls are covered in guns of many sorts, on little pegs. You recognise the thing you bumped from old videos the human you ate enjoyed watching: a grenade.

You scramble up on top of the gun racks, height is good, you think.

The mantis pushes the door open slightly further, and walks into the room. Its eyes scan around at ground level, looking between the boxes.

The human appears to have left the canteen. You can hear its footsteps trace back down the corridor.

I also think we need to move away from the 'cute an innocent' look. Feathers are not terrifying.

You stay quiet, up on top of the gun rack.

The mantis slowly walks around the floor, poking at boxes, searching.

You open your horrible mouth and quietly speak: "Foul fleshthing, sit. Stay."
The mantis looks up to you, and stops. It tilts its head and looks at you. It seems to be thinking.

You puff your feathers up. "Hunt the delicious man meat!" you hiss.
The mantis clicks its mantibles at you twice, decisively. It shakes its head from side to side.

In a single roll of a d100, there are 100 possible numbers that can be rolled with equal, 1/100 probability. Now, if we assume the difficulty of a roll is 50, we have an equal 50/100 chance of success or failure, as there are 50 numbers equal to or greater than 50.

If we remove the even results, there are now only 25 numbers equal to or greater than 50.

A 25/100 chance of success. 26/100, if we include the crit success 100.

But they do. They completely don't count for anything ever. Good rolls or bad rolls.

...I am talking about the "second even roll" type thing that he usually does and not the "best of the odd rolls in the first 4" thing he did earlier which was just retarded. I don't even know what the probability of that would be. 6.25% chance of rolling absolutely nothing for a start.

The creature climbs up onto the footstool, and you can only see its feet. You are hungry.

You creep out from your hiding place, worming your way out into the room, behind the thing.

It is doing something with the light, balancing one tube under its chin while it puts the other in with its hands. Its neck and hands also have those rings and lines on them. It has a flower growing out of its waxy hair.

So hungry...

You spring with all your might, but not at the creature, at the stool it is procariously balanced on. You crash into it, knocking it aside, and the creature falls towards you... Just as planned! You bristle your quills and arch your back, driving them upward into the things loose weaved fabric clothes, stabbing into its stomach.

The glass tubes it was carrying shatter on the ground as it drops them, scrabbling about in pain, pulling you away from it and clawing at its shirt. You get a full view of its head, mouth and noseless, just bare... flesh...? with more of those lines. You spring forwards again and bite into its face, splintering it and spreading shattered remains around. It leaks clear fluid.

It squeals, the noise coming from the sides of its head, and struggles to get up. You bite at its throat, crushing and splintering it as well. Then it is a simple matter of biting into its throat until it ceaces to struggle.

It lies sprawled in the canteen, dead, in front of the fridge. It is leaking translucent fluid. It smells absoultely delicious, from its toes to the flower in its hair.

Let's do this shit:
1/4 chance of one roll that counts (with a 50% chance of being above 50)
3/8 chance of being best of two rolls (75% chance of being above 50)
1/4 chance of best of three rolls (88% chance of being above 50)
1/16 chance of best of four rolls (94% chance of being above 50)

0.25*0.5+0.375*0.75+0.25*0.88+0.0625*0.94 = a 69% chance of getting above 50 with the 'best of the odd rolls in the first 4' system. About halfway between the odds for a single dice and the odds for best of three. But still retarded.
>>

Anyway, eat the thing. Obviously.
>>
You don't bother pulling the thing anywhere before you eat it. Why bother if you're just going to eat everyone who might find the mess, you think.

You bite into it, devouring it's wooden flesh and waxy hair. Ahh, this is the stuff. Perfect, delicious! Well, except for these little hard seed things up in its hair. You spit them out.

>Pick one of:
>Photosynthesis - Turn light into energy!

You are standing in a pool of translucent fluid, leaking out from where the thing's body was. Shreds of its skin tight pants are spread about the floor here and there.

Honestly I'm tempted by photosynthesis because it sounds like it would allow us to heal without consuming mass.

Sense of smell is all well and good but we can get that from practically anything.

The flower is cute... but just not practical at the moment.
>>
>>25430063
Sense of smell I guess? What a crap species.

>Photosynthesis - Turn light into energy!
What the is the use of this? Do we even need energy? We don't eat normally, just turn stuff straight into upgrades by plotmagic.
>>
>>25430063
photosynthesis, could come in handy if we play it right
>>
>>25430063
Hmmm...meat are stupid. Probably leave their scent everywhere..makes it easy to find more food..

Smell.

Then down the corridor. What are the voices saying. Let's meet the meat.
>>
>>25430063
Photosynthesis. We'll get sense of smell from something else, how often does this trait come along?
>>
>>25430124
It sounds like it allows passive regeneration, and it could lead into further upgrades. As it is we may be missing out on upgrades by having to heal instead of just completely consuming biomass.
>>
>>25430124
>I probably haven't been emphasising it, but you have a limited amount of energy. Mostly you're fine for ambush actions, or quick fights, but you tire quickly. Alternate methods of food/energy gain would help you be active and heal without consuming delicious things.

Your feathers shiver, and appear to change shade. You think. It's hard to tell, when everything is monochrome. You know that if you stood around in bright light for a while you would be able to gain energy and heal slowly.
>You gain energy from Feasting and now from Photosynthisis. More energy means you can be more active.

You lick at the clearish fluid bathing your claws and the plastic floor. It is not undelicious.

The voices from the coridoor raise in anger. You hear a few thumps of something against a wall.
>>
>>25430232
Probably the man who wanted the lights to be on. Can we change our voice? If so, yell, "Hold on, almost done."

Then make it your way to wherever the voice is coming from.

>>25430232
Find somewhere to hide and listen. They may be coming in, they may not. If they aren't, they could be arguing about something - which we could use to our advantage in hunting them.
>>
>>25430232
go and investigate. try and climb the wall to stay above sight level.
>>
You scramble into the closest hiding place: The fridge. You have to claw the door open and throw a few cans out to make room, but you do fit inside. But nobody approaches.

Curious, you climb out, feeling slightly lethargic, and creep down the corridor, clinging to the damp and decaying plaster walls. From behind the one door you hear many delicious voices shouting at each other. There is an occasional bang of something hitting something else. You make out a few phrases: "Full house!" "No! That was my ship! I demand a buy in!" "Shut up an drink, Larry."

From the other door you can hear a single delicious voice, and a few strangely undelicious voices. The delicious one is saying "Come on Swiftstrike! You can get him!"

>>
You jump down and grab the door handle of the door to the undelicious voices (and single delicious voice) in your mandibles, and wrench it open as quietly as you can. Which isn't particularly, since your mandibles are strong enough to sheer the doorhandle off. As you just found out. There is a room here, with a bed and a couch and a television, antennae standing tall and skewed. You see more of those undelicious seeds sitting on the bedside table, under a lamp, on on some stacks of dead things. Books perhaps? This stolen knowledge thing is strange and unreliable.

A delicious fleshbag sits with its back to you in the couch, with its back to you. It is shouting at the television. You see more small mantis things inside the television, stabbing at each other with their sharp claws.

"Comeon! Swiftstrike, I've all of next paycheck riding on you!"
One of the tiny mantis quickly decapitates the other.
"NOO!" the delicious thing shouts, throwing its arms up.
"And we have a surprise win from the challenger! That's a big surprise, and someone's going to be very happy!" The voice is cold and undelicious.

You scuttle towards the back of the creatures couch, just as it stands up, arms in the air. You recognise it's spotted pants as the same as before. It was the fleshbag that sent the mantis after you.
"Can you believe it Gwen?" It says, "Only I could lose out on a sure bet like that." It turns towards the door, seeing it hang open.
"Gwen?"

You are right behind the thing's couch, ready to strike...

You scramble up the couch, claws digging into the aged and dying fabric, shedding fluff and padding everywhere. Your foreclaw collides with the thing's neck and, luckily, manages to sever something important. Thick dark blood begins spraying from the wound as the human fleshbag punches at you and grabs at its neck. You get thrown onto the bed from the force of the punch, but the creature is already dying. It struggles towards the room full of delicios voices, but only makes it to the doorway before it gurgles and collapses in an expanding pool of blood.

You bite the things spotted pants, and drag it inside the room, behind the bed. Then you bite onto its neck and guzzle down as much blood as you can, so it won't leak.

You mean to dart back out to clean up the trail of blood, but drinking its precious fluids clouds your mind. "Eat, eat, eat!" You cry, as you begin devouring into the meatbag's body.

>Adrenaline gland - One use massive boost to your strenght and speed!

>Adrenaline gland is the first of many biomorphs with powerful, but limited effects. Mechanically, this is like a kind of like physical fate point, making physical actions much more likely to succeed. Recharges on feast, instead of healing yourself. With your photosynthisis you can also heal or recharge one of these biomorphs or heal with a few hours.

Your eyes twist and change. Your vision goes black, then explodes in a multitude of colours and lights! Blood is red! You are green! The walls are sickly orange and the television is black! So much new sensation! You giggle to yourself.

You finish licking the last of the thing's blood from your feathers when the door across the corridor slams open loudly. An insectoid being is flung down, and lands in the doorway to the room you're in. In the blood of your kill.

It picks itself up, dusting itself off, then looks at its fingers, stained crimson.
"Steve, are you alright?"
It steps in the door.
"Hey guys, I think something happened to Steve."
It draws a phaser, and, holding it steady in front of it, steps through the only exit of the room, following the bloody trail towards you.
