You are Ssen, a Lamia raised by a human Paladin who adopted you after killing the ones who birthed you. You are grown now, and Father has passed on. After a great deal of work, you have become a Paladin like your Father, and now take up his duties.

You are accompanied by your best friend from childhood, the insect druid Tricia; Mage, a magic user who ran away from his family of cannibal raiders known as the Ghouls (Yes, his name is Mage. It was his idea); Persephone, a 22-year old thief/ex-guerllia fighter (She goes by Peri), and Mari, a 13-year old prodigy scholar/now sniper, who has her mind and soul trapped within Peri's body; and Lea, a deeply religious musician/martial artist, trained by her father, a famous trainer for arena fighters, she's covered from her mouth down in bandages to hide the horrific state her body has become thanks to the 'cures' that saved her from cancer.

Your journey continues...

Hope you had a good trip or whatever over the weekend, echo.

I'll just be over here, doing my thing.
>>
Cutting it a little close aren't ya Echo?

Anyways I think we've got a bit of a consensus on what we want to do from the Q&A and the last story thread.

IIRC it was go to White Tree and get stuff done with the Elves and pick up Jullian, hit up River's Crossing to visit Dad's grave and have another good time with the church then hit up stone hall and make fun of Isen.
>>
>>25384737
we also have to visit bronze peak, too. The harpy queen wanted to have a talk with us about how safe her people would be with the dramatae at large. We have at least three good talking points now.
>>
>>25384764
Old One needs his heads delivered as well
>>
>>25384764
>we also have to visit bronze peak, too.

Plus we have a special delivery for Old One.
>>
I was trying to write a long summation of everything that had happened, it took a little longer than I thought it would, so I decided to scrap it. Today we'll wrap up any loose ends you'd like to cover, which includes having time fly by as you train/research/etc. Later in the week, we begin the invasion.

You have won. Kind of.

The Dramatae are dead, and Citadel no longer has any sway over the kingdom, nor does it intend on swallowing it up.

Also, the plots of the Dragon Who Was As Shadow, the land spirit known as The Fifth Humor, and Peace are now in shattered ruins. A lesson to all masterminds, if your plan requires you to turn off the device that regulates destiny...don't count on the heroes not just shooting you in the face when they get a chance.

Unfortunately, Citadel still exists, and all the people and souls that were within it, are now trapped within. A giant dome separates the city from the rest of the world.

Still, you, the Dawnchasers, and Her Illuminated Self, are free of the place. Now that you have freed it, the future is now yours, young lamia. Good luck.

No, first wood is on the road before white tree, so we visit it first. We should break the news about citadel to all the towns on our route- the birds got eaten too, so nothing gets a message around faster now than us on our devil horse.

Lea halts Lightmare at a crossroads. One way will take you to First Wood, the other will go to White Tree.

Mage lets out a low whistle as he looks at the fields. Citadel's magic is gone, so now the air reeks of rotting grain and stale dust. You can see some of the fields have already withered away into dry fields, and those that haven't are rotting as you stare.

"This land is going to take years to recover." Mage says. "And His Light forbid that there be a storm or a tornado. This place would turn into a giant puddle of mud."

"We need to go to First Wood." Peri says. "Julian and the others trapped in the Grove need to be freed. Plus, we have to check to see what the situation is with Mab and the Court."

"I agree, but we should go White Tree first." Mari says. "Those people are directly affected by this." She gestures to the dying fields. "Plus, they have my body. I think now's a good time as any to move it."

We have this. It's sorta accurate, though missing all the towns and cities not mentioned in this quest. There's probably all sorts of places that Ssen hasn't visited yet because they weren't being eaten by ghouls.
>>
In all seriousness, we ARE visiting River's Crossing and we ARE giving dad the good news.

We have time now...
>>
>>25384798
>I was trying to write a long summation of everything that had happened, it took a little longer than I thought it would, so I decided to scrap it.

Would still be awesome to see later, if not right at the beginning of the thread.

> Today we'll wrap up any loose ends you'd like to cover, which includes having time fly by as you train/research/etc.

On the order of days, not months, I hope. We don't have *that* long; Citadel is imploding, and its citizens are in full lotus-eater mode now.

> Still, you, the Dawnchasers, and Her Illuminated Self, are free of the place. Now that you have freed it, the future is now yours, young lamia. Good luck.

I wonder if Comedy's death also killed her resurrected shades?

Off the top of my head, spatially ordered in the direction we need to go:

- Talk to HIS

- We need to go pick up Julian from Comedy's forest. Hopefully she wasn't load-bearing for that forest.

- We should visit Mab and see how the elven courts and are faring, and then give her a ride to Stone Hall if there's nothing more for her to do there.

- Visit White Tree, help out there, get Mari's body and take it somewhere safer.

- Visit River's Crossing on the way home.

- Stone Hall.

- Bronze Peak.

>>25384913
>"I agree, but we should go White Tree first." Mari says. "Those people are directly affected by this." She gestures to the dying fields. "Plus, they have my body. I think now's a good time as any to move it."

We're headed all the way across the continent to the east; First Wood makes more sense to visit first, to minimize backtracking.
>>
>>25384913
We need to hit up First Wood anyways to pick up Mab and Jullian if they want a ride, it wouldn't make sense to go back after hitting up White Tree.
>>
Currently reading the Sunday Q&A thread; wish I'd known that was going to happen, I assumed there'd be no quest until Tuesday.
>>
>>25384987
Echo said he might do something.

Are you not on /tg/ 24/7 or something so you can check for anything?

>capatcha: HIS iedctte\

Okay then
>>
Responding to one thing in the QA thread:
>Oh, and one little bit of fluff that I made that sadly, you'll not have a natural way to discover now.
> That dragon that Dagda mentioned? The Dragon Who's Name is Dragon because she IS what a Dragon IS. That was Ssen's Dragon Ancestor. Her great-great-great-etc-grandmother.

We could potentially find that out in-character via Old One, if he decides to do a little scrying or necromancy with his new heads.

>>25385052
>Echo said he might do something.

Missed that.

>>25385052
>Are you not on /tg/ 24/7 or something so you can check for anything?

I wish, but no.
>>
>>25384913
Goddamn, it took me forever to word this properly at all.

"While it's entirely true the people of white tree need to be told of this with absolute haste, first wood would be very close to on our way there. How about if whatever we have to do there would take longer than an afternoon, we'll continue on to white tree, inform them, dispatch messengers, and secure your body, and return to first wood?"

Fucking geological proximity to one another. It's only a day's travel between either town, anyway, lightmare and all. we have a slightly more lenient time budget.
>>
>>25385070
So, you're suggesting we go to First Wood, and if something time-consuming comes up we leave for White Tree rather than completing it? Sounds reasonable.
>>
>>25385103
well, it's not SO reasonable. It's a bit of a gamble, considering we could lose twice to thrice as much time as we save in travel time to such a decision.

Also I'm a wordy motherfucker, jesus.
>>
>>25385070
I don't know. I can of want to get Maris body out before shit hits the fan at White Tree. We don't need to stay there at White Tree just grab the body and bolt.
>>
>>25385116
>well, it's not SO reasonable. It's a bit of a gamble, considering we could lose twice to thrice as much time as we save in travel time to such a decision.

I still think it makes sense to head to First Wood first for travel distance reasons. We can make the call about how long to stay there once we find out what's up.
>>
>>25385131
well, I too want to go to white tree first.

I'm just being a time-jew over travel distance.

Want to just say "screw it" and go to white tree? I mean, first wood will have some legitimate issues we are going to have to deal with, almost certainly.
>>
Another response to the QA thread:

>Okay, have to go. WOndering what theme song I'm gonna use. I'd like to use something that's NOT from an anime or was unsed in another work...

If we're going with the invasion of the Phoenix Empire, I can think of a few possibilities for that. Do you strongly prefer something with lyrics like the ones so far, or would you be OK with something instrumental?
>>
>>25385147
Yeah, I mean really. For once time isn't the enemy here and personally getting Maris body out rates a little higher than issues in First Wood for time being.
>>
>>25385169
in light of that, let me make some alternate dialogue for echo marking us going to white tree, and he'll decide by whatever mechanic he decides by.

>>25384913
"Let's go to white tree, why not. They need to know about the food concerns, and mari's body needs to be shipped somewhere secure. Not to mention that whatever we have to do in first wood will take a while. "
>>
>>25385169
>Yeah, I mean really. For once time isn't the enemy here and personally getting Maris body out rates a little higher than issues in First Wood for time being.

Can we safely transport it in stasis, though, or do we need to rush it straight to somewhere else that can put it in stasis?
>>
>>25385191
I think it's a stasis-coffin, which will be OK to transport.

Our biggest problem will be keeping the party members/ourselves from storing perishable snacks in there along with mari.
>>
>>25385204
Ahahaha. I can see it now.

>GUYS! Knock it off! Stop putting fruits in with my body. Who the hell put dried meat in there too!
>>
"While it's entirely true the people of White Tree need to be told of this with absolute haste, first wood would be very close to on our way there. How about if whatever we have to do there would take longer than an afternoon, we'll continue on to White Tree, inform them, dispatch messengers, and secure your body, and return to First Wood?" You say.

"Sounds like a plan." Lea says, and turns the cart off.

Her Illuminated Self, Deborah, is sitting there looking very out-of-her-depth. She watches the world pass by.

"This is the first time I've ever been outside of Citadel." She says.
>>
>>25385162
>Do you strongly prefer something with lyrics like the ones so far, or would you be OK with something instrumental?

Either, let me hear 'em all.
>>
>>25385232
"Really, this is the first time ANY of us have ever been outside of Citadel if you think about it."
>>
>>25385271
seconding this
>>
>>25385271
>"Really, this is the first time ANY of us have ever been outside of Citadel if you think about it."

Nah, we've been to Stone Hall and Bronze Peak. But I like the spirit you're going for.

>>25385232
"In more ways than one, I think; many who physically have left Citadel's presence have never left it either. How does it feel to not have its voice in your ear anymore?"

I'd also like to talk to her about almost all the Paladins being in Citadel right now.
>>
>>25385232

I'm going to raise a concern that was raised in the QA thread.

Whatever happened to Princess and our mantle and circlet?
>>
>>25385299
>"In more ways than one, I think; many who physically have left Citadel's presence have never left it either. How does it feel to not have its voice in your ear anymore?"

Rephrasing this:

"In more ways than one, I think; many who physically left Citadel's presence have never truly been outside it either. How does it feel to not have its voice in your ear anymore?"
>>
>>25385232
"I can assure you any prior experience would be of little help now anyway."
>>
>>25385306
>Whatever happened to Princess and our mantle and circlet?

Princess is likely still in Citadel, fate unknown. Likewise our mantle and circlet, but those are not irreplaceable. (We still have the medallion, fortunately.)
>>
>>25385232
"Hey Mage, why don't you sing this song I've just come up with:"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-kl4hJ4j48s

(Actually, this is kind of the theme of the new Season, isn't it? Going to all the places outside the Citadel Kingdom.)
>>
>>25385232
"Too bad it's under such strange circumstances, isn't it? With any luck, it won't be a very somber time for you. I had hoped to show you a few sights, maybe my hometown while you were under my protection, some new places might help a bit."
We already told her we're going to free citadel, so I'm not going to re-iterate that here.
>>
>>25385328
poor mage
>>
we need to ask her about our circlet, as well.

We lost ours, didn't we? Is that a pali-crime?
>>
>>25385352
And we stuck them on a pet...
>>
>>25385340
We've been putting our levels in poison. Mage, on the other hand, put his in swag.
>>
>>25385373
yeah, we might need to do a confession over this. Also the small matter of the whole... citadel... implosion?
>>
>>25385377
He seems to have misclicked at some point, as he doesn't seem to like cougars as much as his talent tree would say.
>>
>>25385386
"Please forgive me, Your Illuminated Self, for I have sinned; I caused your city to implode and turn itself into a giant bubble of doom."

"I accept your confession, but I don't think that's against any of the teachings..."

Maybe we should consult Lea on what the Teachings have to say about this?
>>
>>25385386
The Mantle was lost in the course of our duties. As for Citadel imploding, might call for a confession. HIS could certainly help with that, and it would probably make her feel more useful.
>>
>>25385408
>"Please forgive me, Your Illuminated Self, for I have sinned; I caused your city to implode and turn itself into a giant bubble of doom."

OK, that's worth a chuckle. Though not so much "caused" as "killed the thing doing something worse and left that as the default".
>>
>>25385413
>>25385408
also, it would be our chance to tell her how we... er... fabricated a miracle. that one time.
>>
>>25385408
It's not about any particular teaching, it's about doing the right thing. And given that our actions caused Citadel to seal itself off with an unknown but probably large number of souls inside, and likely lead to a lot of deaths before we even got there, some doubts on the "right thing" count wouldn't be unreasonable.
>>
Heyo, fellow Dawnchasers. I'm building us a new map of the world using a trial version of Fractal Mapper.

It's fiddly, but it seems to be a good tool. What do we know about this continent?
>>
>>25385434
>>25385457
So, confession time is a go?
>>
>>25385472
well, that there are mountains/hills next to first wood. Most likely to the south/southeast, given desert patterns in comparison to ocean location.

But fuck if I know.
>>
>>25385472

It has land. And water. Some trees too. Grass maybe.
>>
>>25385507
Not so much anymore I think.
>>
>>25385494
if we really want to tell HIS about all that.

The miracle one, at least, is a pretty big fucking secret.
>>
>Whatever happened to Princess and our mantle and circlet?
Princess and her owner made a fake mantle and circlet for them to wear. You still have yours. They wouldn't fit around Princess anyway.

As for what happened to them...that's something to find out later.

"In more ways than one, I think; many who physically left Citadel's presence have never truly been outside it either.

Too bad it's under such strange circumstances, isn't it? With any luck, it won't be a very somber time for you. I had hoped to show you a few sights, maybe my hometown while you were under my protection, some new places might help a bit. Either way, I can assure you any prior experience would be of little help now anyway. How does it feel to not have its voice in your ear anymore?"

"Strange." Deborah says. "It feels as if part of me is empty, but I only realize that it's gone because it's gone." She frowns. "It's a cold, unpleasant feeling. As if your parents suddenly stopped telling you that it was okay, and everything will be alright." She looks out at the destruction that surrounds you.

"I don't think there will be many who will thank you for this." She sighs. "Part of me resents you a little as well...I suppose." She shrugs. "I know that's foolish, after all they were going to do something vile to me, weren't they? But..." She gestures to the dead fields. "I know there will be some who will say that it was my place. What value is one person's body and soul versus that of a kingdom?" She shakes her head. "And when I say those words, my blood runs cold with fear."
>>
>>25385527
To be fair, the day doesn't exist anymore
>>
>>25385494
No. Please. No.
>>
>>25385541

"The needs of the many outwiegh the needs of the few. The question is, which few? It was that logic that allowed Citadel to flourish in the first place."
>>
>>25385541
Hey I'm used to being hated! However right now the Kingdom needs you to help keep everyone as calm as possible as the only remaining member of the royal family is intersting to say the very least.
>>
>>25385541
"Citadel was fueled by bodies, souls, and the sacrifice of innocents. It had to stop sometime."

"Don't hold yourself responsible."
>>
>>25385541
"I didn't quite expect all of this to play out like it did. The crops and such, perhaps, but the rest was out of the blue. Don't concern yourself so much about one soul versus a kingdom here- what we're working for is freeing a kingdom's worth of souls. The fact that I could help a few living ones like yourself along the way is a much appreciated bonus, though."
>>
>>25385541

Incidentally, Echo, do you mind giving me a few important tidbits with regards to world-building?

>general shape of the continent
>name of the continent (assuming it's not Citadel)
>size of the continent
>locations of major landmarks (mountains, rivers, lakes)

Give me some time to figure that out. I need to sit down and doodle. I'll have some solid stuff by Thursday, hopefully.
>>
>>25385541
We should show HIS Citadel's maw. She'll see what it took for Citadel to be so prosperous.
>>
>>25385673
See >25384915
This is what we know in-game.
>>
>>25385715
Good plan. The scale of the whole affair is kind of a "see-it-to-believe-it" sort of thing.
>>
>>25384915
We could also use some approximate terrain types through regions. Yeah Bronze peak is surrounded by mountains to the north, but do those mountains stretch across the continent? Does the chain extend inland?

What is the extent of the area in which the crops instantly failed when Citadel went turtle?

Would also be handy to have indicator markers next to each major area showing who controls it as it becomes known to us. Especially important once Phoenix Empire gets all up in this.
>>
>>25385714

You don't have to draw anything, I was going to do that. I just needed a basic idea of the scale and shape of things.
>>
>>25385757
>>25385764
Gentlemen, can't we deal with this some other time? You know, like maybe at the end of the thread?
>>
>>25385832
Yes. Please. Time and place, people. Time and place.
>>
"I didn't quite expect all of this to play out like it did. The crops and such, perhaps, but the rest was out of the blue. Don't concern yourself so much about one soul versus a kingdom here- what we're working for is freeing a kingdom's worth of souls. The fact that I could help a few living ones like yourself along the way is a much appreciated bonus, though." You say.

HIS nods. "Though, I think not claiming credit for this right away, may be a prudent step." She says.

You make camp as comfortable as you can for Deborah, but she's still a little phased by the idea of camp food, sleeping on the ground, and using the bushes.

Still exhaustion and hunger seem to help the woman along, and the day passes.

You arrive at First Wood.

"You know," Peri says. "I'm honestly not surprised anymore. We can't go anywhere nice. Ever."

Apparently, Mab got the Grove gateway open quicker than you thought she would. They Fey Court Army, though not huge, is still big enough to have control over the city.

Thankfully, you don't see many people filled with arrows, just two. The rest you see all gathered up in the village square. You see Julian tied to a post, gag in his mouth.

"Hold!" A soldier says. "This is elven lands, turn aro-"

"Wait!" Another says. "That's the Paladin Serpent. Her Majesty said we were to let her in...but her alone."

"But I am Dagda!" Mage says.

"Yes, she said you say that." The second soldier says. "She says that we should tell you that 'She sends her love, but she needs some space.' You aren't to enter." He nods at you. "Leave your weapons on the cart, and we will take you to her Majesty."
>>
>>25385849
Take clang on our back, even if we leave our weapons. Shields totally don't count.
>>
>>25385849
Why'd you have to go and open your big mouth Peri?
>>25385873
We get a good bonus for being completely unarmed, might as well ditch clang if we can't have beacon
>>
>>25385849
"The last time I agreed to meet an elf alone his men took my group hostage. If yours try anything similar they will die in the attempt. Consider yourselves fairly warned."

"And take the gag out of Paladin Graves' mouth. That looks terribly uncomfortable."
>>
>>25385849
>Wow, Mab. Leave you for two fucking seconds and you pull this?

Not like we don't have other weapons built in or anything so lets get this over with.
>>
>>25385904
Let's not make any threats right now, okay?
>>
>>25385849
At least allow HIS to go in also. We just want to show her Citadel's Maw.
>>
>>25385849
"Looks like I'll have to field this one on my own, fellows. Walking into traps is my stock and trade, after all."

Hand beacon and clang and twang to our comrades, and gesture for the elves to lead on. If things get nasty, we're not COMPLETELY unarmed, but we're way outnumbered.
>>
>>25385849
"I ask permission to bring one distinguished guest to meet with Mab, diplomatically. I will take full responsibility for her, and for Mab's ire if any."
>>
>>25385926
Lets save that for after we get Mab to stop being crazy
>>
>>25385918
Think of it as a "warning". Our track record with elvish diplomacy doesn't lend itself well to trust.
>>
>>25385937
They said one person
>>25385943
Comedy was involved last time, she's in your head bag now
>>
>>25385939
This may or may not be entirely her doing; she might just be trying to regain some semblance of control to keep things from falling apart, and her group of elven guerillas aside, most of First Wood was massing an army to take on the world. Such things are not quickly diffused.

>>25385952
>They said one person

I'm aware. Negotiation. Worth a try.
>>
>>25385952
>Comedy was involved last time, she's in your head bag now

Mab should be pleased to see that, though we'd better not show it to anyone else unless we know that they know "Thistleblossom" was fake.

Speaking of which, did we ever ask "Mab" why she had Robin and friends out looking for us and for Thistleblossom?
>>
>>25385952
And before that it was Donovan.

The point stands that the Fey Court elves are hostile, and seem inclined towards backstabbing. And if they try it, a lot of them WILL likely die, as our fellow travelers are far better at this than they were with Donovan's band. It'd be as much a public service announcement as anything else.
>>
>>25385993
We're quite capable of dealing with whatever stunts they pull; the warning may do more harm than good.

Captcha: notorieties
>>
>>25386008
And the entire POINT of warning them is so that they aren't tempted to pull any stunts.

But I'll let it drop, because I can see I'm in the clear minority here.
>>
>>25385714
Okay, okay. Give me a bit.

>general shape of the continent
The area you see in the map is about a third of the continent. With the tundra above being less in size than the desert below. The tundra doesn't have a solid land mass. It's a bunch of largish to smallish islands, but there's a lot of ice fields there, so if the weather is right you can walk from island to island.

The southern side keeps getting wider then it sharply turns into a horn. There's a lot of desert from Purple Sands down, but nothing is known more than 40 miles beyond Purple Sands.

>>>name of the continent (assuming it's not Citadel)
It's just the Continent, and it WAS known as Citadel Kingdom. Mark the east side of the map as Menagerie Kingdom, from Bronze Peak to Coral Gate.

>>>size of the continent
Comparable to North America plus half of South America.

>>>locations of major landmarks (mountains, rivers, lakes)
There's a large lake by First Wood, a Mountain Range that's between First Wood and Purple Sands, The range runs in a Y shape, both ends ending at least 5 miles away from White Tree.

There's also a group of Key Islands that's between Stone Hall and Coral Gate.

But two or three small fishing villages along the east coast. There's also a few smaller villages that are in the kingdom, but White Tree and First Wood are the closest settlements to Citadel. As of now, that area might as well be marked 'Citadel Wasteland' as it's land that's long been totally reliant on Citadel's Magic.

First Wood is surrounded by Trees up until the Citadel Wasteland. The Fey Court hideout is closer to the mountains.

Put two rivers that cross at River's Crossing, have one run up to the north, then bend towards White Tree, and have the other run all the way to the East Coast.

Yeah... don't really need to make any snippy or clever one-liners about our natural weapons. Let them find out for themselves if the need arises.

they totally already know about at least one of 'em, if mab shared the corpse sphere story. three, if they have studied the citadel-lamia guides.

"The last time I agreed to meet an elf alone his men took my group hostage. If yours try anything similar they will die in the attempt. Consider yourselves fairly warned." You say.

They nod. "Mab said that anyone stupid enough to attack the Dawnchasers, would be executed by her if you didn't kill them." The second one says.

"I ask permission to bring one distinguished guest to meet with Mab, diplomatically. I will take full responsibility for her, and for Mab's ire if any." You say.

The second elf shakes his head. "We're not supposed to listen to anything you offer or bargain. Her Majesty warned us about your ability to warp people's minds with your tongue alone. Alone."

HIS shakes her head. "I...I wouldn't know what to say anyway." She's terrified.

Lea puts a hand on her shoulder. "It's fine. We've done this countless times."

>>25385936
"Looks like I'll have to field this one on my own, fellows. Walking into traps is my stock and trade, after all." You say.

"See?" Lea says. "Nothing to worry about."

You put Beacon and Twang in the wagon, and allow the elves to lead you down the hill into the town square.

"Could you please, take the gag out of Paladin Graves' mouth. That looks terribly uncomfortable." You say.

"Only if he promises to stop shouting and using horrific language." A soldier says.

Julian nods.

They remove the gag.

"Ungrateful bastards." He mutters. He nods at you. "Ssen. You're looking well." He sighs. "The monsters and the Sea Queens have ben sent back to the East Coast." He says. "Mab got all the gates working in the grove. I saw them off." He jerks his head at the soldiers. "I was planning to go with them, but they requested that I remain. That apology and everything...then this." He growls.

"It's nothing personal." You hear a voice. You turn around and you see Mab walking towards you with a royal guard. Her hair is tied up in many loops and curls like before. "Just taking advantage of the new situation."

Not a perfectly straight one, and the horn is a bunch of smaller islands in a group, but roughly, yes

And, what, we're just supposed to pray she does not take advantage of it further?

We so need to remind her of the agreement, which, among other things, said that folks not under Citadel's control would be as welcome in elven lands as elves would be in other lands. Unless they're hoping to never visit anywhere else, ever, then keeping us out is not a good idea.

"Lady Paladin Ssen Patrick." Mab says bowing. "Many thanks are owed to you, you have saved my people from a horrific threat."

"You can drop the act." Julian says.

"It's not an act." Mab says. "I really am thankful, and that's why you aren't dead, Julian Elfslayer. Same with the others here."

"And what of them?" He gestures to the two dead men on the ground.

"You saw, they charged at us with blades drawn." Mab says. "We were within our right, and it keep others from being foolish."

"A fish gutting knife and a butcher's cleaver are not swords." Julian says.

"Foolishness is deadly." Mab says. She turns to you. "I'll allow everyone to walk out of here. Unharmed, even him. You can escort them out of the woods, and then do whatever you will."

That would be good to know, actually. I could believe that a certain part of it is her grandstanding as required for her role.
>>
>>25386473
In the meantime, we can put "Find spell that can turn First Wood into First Desert" on Mage's to-do list (or maybe we should get our artificer friends working on lumber processing technology). Maxine might just be grandstanding, but there will be other Mabs in the future.

(I'm not so worried about having to do this, but "turn First Wood into First Desert" sounds too badass not to mention at least once.)

She shakes her head. "No. The contract was fine. The terms were fair and the retirement deal was sweet...and then things changed." She smiled. "Now, you don't have an army. I do. And as for the contract, the only word an Elf need hold sacred is one that they give to another Elf." She shrugs. "Lamias don't count, and neither does that quarter-blood lich you work with."

Julian shakes his head. "We know things about you, Maxine." He growls.

Mab nods. "Yep, you do." She puts a finger to her lips and looks skywards. "Although, I seem to remember that a lot of the heads of the old elven families were killed off all at once. The only people who are left are Fey Court soldiers, and cells. Who don't really give a crap about traditions, but want this stupid war over and our land back." She smirks. SHAZAM. as a placeholder i named it The Lamia Quest Setting, or TheLaQuS for short.

This is a basic outline of the continent, with rivers, lakes, mountains and civilization omitted. I want to get the shape right.

The two lines indicate the upper and lower limits of our 'old' map, and thus the limits of Citadel Kingdom pre-fall.

>the only word an Elf need hold sacred is one that they give to another Elf." She shrugs. "Lamias don't count, and neither does that quarter-blood lich you work with."
And neither does Mage, apparently. I guess those trials were for nothing.
>>
>>25387156

As distasteful as this entire affair is, I'd have to agree with this. Posturing and image are the lifeblood of politics, and they're anything BUT nice.

We can deal with this later. Right now, we need to get Graves and whomever else to safety.
>>
>>25387203
You do realize that's a picture of Nikita Kruschev, right? And that it says so in the file name?

Is the part sticking out of the west coast supposed to be Citadel? Cause if it is, then fine, otherwise it's a bit too far out and too wide, also you need the islands on the east side. I've mentioned them being the source of the ever illusive pineapple.
>>
>>25387229
they were mostly for comedy's sake.

Also, to get our foot in the door, which is really all a religious person like us needs.
>>
>>25387249
I'm the original mapmaker, and that part sticking out of the west WAS the citadel ocean district, yes.

The new mapper doesn't know that though.

>>25387156
>Whisper back: "Next time you need to tell me that you're trying to weed out the backstabbers and need to put on a show for them, say that *first*."

To Mab, further, before talking to the crowd: "Fine, get your own court in order, but don't take too long getting some diplomatic envoys over to Stone Hall. If we have to have the negotiations in private at first, fine, but better that we have them sooner rather than later lest there be misunderstandings by freshly evicted people."

Then, for the crowd: "Very well, *Queen* Mab, we won't soon forget this. We'll be on our way. And don't think we've forgotten about the two who died needlessly. Make sure they're the last, if you have any hope of peace between our peoples."
>>
>>25387119
Then I will be expecting results Maxine. I will not hesitate to turn First Wood on it's head if that is what it takes to get everyone to play nice together and act as equals.
>>
>>25387262
>>25387249

The central west peninsula IS intended to be the location of citadel. is it too large? Adding the eastern archipelago now.
>>
>>25387119
Also, ask Mab privately how her new court felt about Thistlebottom: since they don't care much for ceremony, did they fear her and know she seemed fake? Would they kill us for having Comedy's head in a bag, or cheer?
>>
Yeah, back off on mab. I knew it was a suspiciously-good-for-our-side doublecross.
>>
"Look, if you expect me to be anything but stupid, you really need to re-assess what you know about me. I'm all about discrediting leaders in front of large crowds. I'll back off on this one though, since you didn't really mean it. Clean this up, I would hate to have to interfere with sovereign affairs later on."

"I know I know." She whispers. "Why do you think your Uncle isn't breaking free of those cheap ropes I put him in?"

"You've got a year, if you can't clean this up. I will." You say. "I will not hesitate to turn First Wood on it's head if that is what it takes to get everyone to play nice together and act as equals."

"If I don't have this under control in a year, that means I'm dead." She says. "Done. Uhhh, you HAD to get rid of the ENTIRE army, didn't you? Now I CAN'T retire!"

You step back. "Very well, *Queen* Mab, we won't soon forget this, but we don't want a war, and I'd be a fool to start one over something as small as an insult. We'll be on our way. And don't think we've forgotten about the two who died needlessly. Make sure they're the last, if you have any hope of peace between our peoples. Have these people gather as much as they can from their homes, and I'll escort them somewhere they can start over."

"Agreed!" She says. "See? Even the great Paladins bow to me, my strength, and my schemes!"

It takes a while, but you end up at the start of a very disgruntled group of people heading towards Stone Hall.

Julian rides next to you. He groans. "I'm sorry, this has turned into such a mess. This was actually my idea. If you heard her talk to some of those other Fey Court leaders, you'd do the same." He shakes his head. "When we could threaten to destroy First Wood in a day with the army, we had something. Now, it's this, or we go back to night raids, and caravan attacks." He shakes his head. "I should have figured out a way to warn you. I'm sorry."
>>
I don't know about being cowed, but certainly put on an act of leaving in a huff.
>>
>>25387416
I'd still prefer to be able to talk to her in private. Shit's going to be hitting the fan in a lot of places going forward, and it would help for her to know what's going on outside her kingdom, and what we're doing. Likewise, knowing what's going on inside her kingdom helps us.
>>
>>25387458
It's alright. I trust you, and I understand. I'm just glad everyone got out of the Garden.
>>
>>25387458
We're going to need to clean up the Maw at some point. It's unfortunate that we couldn't take the opportunity to show HIS one of the most blatant bits of ugliness underneath Citadel.

"Don't be sorry; with plans like that one we'll make a Dawnchaser out of you yet."
>>
>>25387458
On the bright side, you can finally visit Dad's grave. Also we've pretty much gotten most everyone of any threat to us dead. Also I've got a surprise guest for you to meet!
>>
>>25387458
"To be fair I wasn't expecting Citadel to turn in on itself like it did, so we'll just have to make do for now."
>>

Oh, and after staying behind in the Garden and surviving, and us finally having a moment's peace, I think Julian needs a lamia hug.

"I don't mind much- I'm not angry or anything like that. Though, I've made my career setting off powder kegs like that one, so it would be wise to tell me in advance next time.

>Also I've got a surprise guest for you to meet!

I wanted to show HIS the Maw. You know, show her what we are fighting against and that we can win against overwhelming odds.

Certainly we could ask for no better benediction for our travels.

In any case, onward to White Tree. We need to see a Conclave about a body.

Where do we need to go for the other two last requests again? The manifesto and the black rose.

manifesto is in bronze peaks. The black rose needs to be planted under a white oak in the coral city.

We will probably need to purchase both the black rose AND the white oak from stone hall.

This, and call him Uncle Jul for extra lovings.

Also, SHAZAM! Citadel peninsula shrunk down so it's only a few hundred miles across, and an island chicane added between Coral Gate and Stone Hall (or where they'll be, anyway). I feel like it needs more islands, but this is Echo's world, not mine.

"Don't be sorry; with plans like that one we'll make a Dawnchaser out of you yet." You say, your tail wraps around his arm and shoulder and you give him a reassuring hug.

"I actually don't mind much- I'm not angry or anything like that. Though, I've made my career setting off powder kegs like that one, so it would be wise to tell me in advance next time.

"It's good to see you without it being a deadly emergency, uncle. Have you talked to Her Illuminated Self? We have her with us on our trip. Maybe she'll be helpful in getting the inhabitants of first wood moving with a minimum of riots."

Julian stares at you opened mouth. "You...you rescued Her Illuminated Self?" He shakes his head. "I need to speak to her. Now."

"Yeah, I wish I could have shown her the Maw." You say.

"I'll speak to her about it." He grins at hugs you. "But you just gave us a massively useful tool. She's going to be the difference between a riot and peace!" He nods. "I'll go speak with her and have her talk to the people. Then you need to tell me EVERYTHING about what happened."
>>

>>"I have a manifesto in my locker in the Coins at Bronze Peak." Ryan says. "You have that printing thing...I want everyone to read it and understand the plight of the masses."

So, that one we'll pick up while we're in Bronze Peak, then take it to Barney to get printed and distributed.

Should we visit Coral Gate on our way back, or is that too far out of our way from taking the people of First Wood to Stone Hall? Perhaps we should head south after we get there. Not that far out of our way with Nightmare, but quite a bit out of our way with a townful of people in tow.

There's a serious problem with an immortal being taking titles that last for life. If anything like that ever *did* happen, we'd have to make sure that the title can be passed on while still living.

Wait, are we going to Stone Hall or white tree first?

"Get helping the people. Stories can wait for after we've got everyone moving and words said for the dead." You say.

Julian shakes his head. "I TOLD them not to do anything stupid." He says as he goes to address the crowd.

The herd of people slowly exit the townadn the forest with their stuff, and the few at the front start to see HIS standing there in a wagon. More than a few drop to their knees.

Julian and you, run up to her. She looks at you and Julian confused.

"Paladin Patrick, Paladin Graves?" She asks. "What's going on? Why are all these people here?"

"It's...a complicated story, you holiness." Julian says. "I am...not the best with words...we had to evict everyone on the order of the Elves, but it was really my order, but I had to pretend that it wasn't." He looks at you. "Help?"

"The self-styled Queen Mab of the elves, or Maxine to her friends, is more or less on our side. She had to put on a little play to not get stabbed in the back by people who aren't. Part of that involves throwing her weight around with her new army, which no longer had Citadel's army to stop it. So, First Wood now belongs to the elves as their sovereign territory, and rather than leaving its other residents in place as we'd originally hoped, any non-elf is currently persona non grata. Which means all these folks are now refugees, and soon to be citizens of Stone Hall, the closest thing the non-Citadel part of this continent has to a capital city."

(This is an explanation for HIS's benefit. Obviously we'll be explaining it slightly differently to the folks of First Wood, and not telling operational security details to them.)

"Any other method would have resulted in a lot of unneeded bloodshed." Julian says.

"I can't..." She shakes her head. "How can you two claim to be Paladins, in service to His Light, and allow creatures who have no respect for..." She looks out at the gathering crowd of people, and then back at you and Julian's glaring and stern faces, and she deflates. She curls up her knees and puts her head in her hands. "I can't do this...no no no." She shivers.

"Your holiness...they need to hear something from you." Julian says.

MOTIVATING SPEECH TIME!!!!!
(I cant write worth a fuck but here it goes.)
Your Holiness, we dont HAVE the power and respect that you command. Its your office that allows us to do our jobs. These people are starving and desperate, please just reassure them that things will be taken care of so as to avoid a riot and prevent these people from charging back into first wood to reclaim their former homes from the elves.
>>
>>25388268
>"I can't! It's too much, and too hard." She moans. "Tell them to go away! You're my Paladins, you're supposed to do these things for me!"

"These people just lost their homes and their lands, and they're moving somewhere to start a whole new life. And despite all that, they're falling to their knees in front of you, as one sane thing left in their lives. They don't need the Paladin Serpent right now; they need Her Illuminated Self.

And you need this right now, too. You're going to have to start functioning without that voice of confidence in the back of your mind. You don't have to be perfect; they'll love you anyway. And you don't have to tell them this is fair or right; it's all the better if they go on believing that the elves kicked them out for now. All they need is a blessing for their journey and for the new lives they're about to embark upon, that kind of thing.

We'll take care of the details afterward, but they need a few words. Please."
>>
>>25388268

"They need you, you are probably the only link they have to any sort of structure or normality."
>>
>>25388268
Miss a single beat, because that caught us off guard, and then move on.
"Darn, and I had thought I'd get away without having to give a speech this time. As you will, your illuminatedness. I hope they don't mind hearing the bad news from me."

Then I write up a speech for the people, jeez, gimme a minute I'm slow
>>
>>25388268
"Holiness, Uncle Julian is more likely to scare them into scattering with his language. And I'm a 300 pound Snakewoman with a devious mind and bone melting venom. Right now they don't need me or him. They need you."
>>
>>25388390

we're more like 900~ pounds.

We're fucking huge
>>
>>25388411
>>25388397
>>25388390
Something like this.

Let's just have her give her blessing to these people and this trip, and then we'll do the rest for her.

She needn't be a great public speaker, just a standard, every day blessing. She can shift the rest to us, all the logistics, planning, and where-are-we-going is up to the paladins, s'true.
>>
>>25388390
>We'll take care of the details afterward, but they need a few words. Please."

This is so that she can give a blessing and turn it over to us for the motivational speeches people are already writing. We can then follow up with telling them more about Stone Hall and Citadel and what's going on, and then ending with the good news that thanks to Robin's selflessness they won't be starting from nothing. That will also serve the purpose of showing them some elven generosity and telling others of his sacrifice, which will go a long way towards mollifying their resentment towards elves right now.
>>
>>25388444
>>25388411
We've not weighed ourself since we were less than 600 pounds.

So we're less than 600 pounds. Don't let Ssen catch you positing otherwise.
>>
How many refugees are there in total, echo?

2,500 might not be much. if there's a true city full, then it'll really only cover the trip.
>>
>>25388480

>>
Augh, telling people they're refugees now, pack their things, we're leaving is hard. I really hope we get a blesshelp.

"Please, your holiness." Julian says.

Deborah glares at the two of you. You have the unmistakable feeling that you've made another enemy for life.

She stands up and sneers at the two of you as she walks past you.

"People!" She says. "We are here today to speak to you. Today, you have you lost your homes to the elves. Your Citadel, your beautiful city has fallen, reclaimed by dark magic, and We...sadly...were unable to stop it...as were your Paladins." She glares at the two of you. Then she takes takes a deep breath, she's gotten her shot in. "But we are a strong people! We are a united people, and we are pure in our faith and power!" There's an applause and cheering. HIS' eyes light up and she nods. "Yes...yes...you believe in me and His Light! This was not your fault! This is merely a test! A true test of your Faith!" She says.

SHAZAM, round 3. Now we get into the details.

On the western coast we have the Citadel, now a massive stone dome a staggering 300 miles wide. (we can make it smaller if you like, but that's how the scaling turned out). stretching just over 325 miles to the east are the Deadlands, once fertile farmland meant to feed the ravenous Citadel, now abandoned by its master and left to rot.

Sandwiched between that and the Great lake is First Wood, so named because of the Great Forest to the north. it is through this that the primary highway passes to the east and the rest of Citadel Kingdom, or the Menagerie Kingdom, as it is now known. If one follows this road, the next major city they would reach would be White Tree.

Just to the northeast of White tree, at the meeting of the two primary tributaries of the Great North River (i'm sticking with deliberately unimaginative names because that's how Citadel rolls, apparently) is the tiny village of River's Crossing. Nearly 400 miles directly north of here is the mountain city of Bronze Peak.

Far to the south, isolated by deserts to the south and mountains to the west, is the city of Purple sands. It is likely this isolation which made it such a juicy target for the Dramatae.

On the east coast there is one major city, Stone Hall, in the north. a number of fishing villages occupy the Great North River delta, and in the south lie the ruins of the once-proud Coral Gate.

In the far north, the winter brings ice floes, joining together the many Tundra Islands. the white represents the southernmost extent of the winter freeze.

Now the important question: What's wrong with it?
>>
>>25388745
She's lived in Citadel her whole life. The place where it raining was the worst thing that's happened in living memory. She's never had to do anything like this before.

For our own followup after HIS's..."blessing" (that one was a shock, perhaps that corrupting ceremony wasn't entirely ineffective):

"We're going to be escorting you to Stone Hall, with a couple of short stops along the way. Either Stone Hall or Bronze Peak is a fine place to build a new life. Both of them are still being rebuilt, physically in Stone Hall's case or economically in Bronze Peak's; both of them have many opportunities for anyone with able hands or useful skills.

I don't know how much you've heard already about the troubles in Citadel. I've just come from there, and the city has sealed itself off. And I mean that literally when I say "the city has"; it magically clammed up before our eyes, with everyone inside. Let us all thank the Light that we are not there. We'll be taking care of that problem soon enough.

There are others who are fighting the evil in Citadel as well. There are those who have died fighting it. Three such heroes, Robin, Ryan, and Jessi, as their last act of generosity, left some gold that we'll be using to help people get on their feet in Stone Hall. You may resent the elves right now for kicking you out of your own lands, and I cannot say you would be wrong to do so. But there are still many who wish peace, and it is thanks to them that we are leaving in peace, alive and whole. And thanks in no small part to the sacrifice of the three I mentioned, Citadel is contained, and not spreading across the continent like a plague.

May the Light watch over our journey, and over your new lives. And if the Light sees fit to make our Journey longer, then may it also give us the strength to see it through."

I was rather hoping she'd be less vindictive and more inspired and inspiring.

But on the bright side, at least she seems to be coping well from suddenly being transplanted from a fake paradise powered by unspeakable horrors.
>>
>>25388803
That looks amazing.

One thing that stood out at first glance: I don't think Citadel should be a perfectly round circle; the edges on the continent side should smoothly go inward and taper into the coast, rather than having a taper of ocean between parts of the city and the continent.
>>
>>25388803
Move Bronze Peak closer to the east coast by 200 miles or so.

Have a road go through the mountains to connect First Wood and Purple Sands.

Other than that. This is great.
>>

"Yes, as her illuminated self has said, the capital has fallen and dark times are upon us. You will all return to your homes and gather what belongings you can carry, marshal what pack animals and wagons you can, and carry as much of your lives as you are able. When you are finished, we will leave this place heading east, stopping at towns along the way, destined for stone hall, on the opposite shore. You will be free to pick up a new life at a place of your choosing along our path, and we will actively work to settle anyone who is still wandering once we arrive at our destination. Work together and move with peace, and we will get through this with no more bloodshed, and there will be time to rebuild. Light be upon all of you."

That's why I said "the evil in Citadel"; they don't have to know about the malicious land spirit yet, but they know there's *something* wrong there. This is enough to help them know what's up.

Shazam. Citadel the Perfect Sphere has become Citadel the Colossal Tumor. A road joins First Wood and Purple Sands, through a mountain pass. Bronze peak is nestled in the eastern mountain range, and unnecessary desert markers in the south have been removed (this being desert, no one would has gotten far enough to make sure it's that wide anyway).

"It's not that hard; you should listen to the voices in your head more." You give him a toothy smile. "In all seriousness, Uncle, in his Light, all people have a place, even if they lose it for a bit.

"The key, my dear uncle, Is to talk to them about the issues before they get the pitchforks and torches out. And she's been through a great deal, it's a lot to take in I imagine. We might've put pressure on her too soon."

"Agreed." He sighs. "Well, let's see what kind of horror awaits us when we arrive at White Tree."

You arrive at White Tree, and the horror sets in pretty quickly. White Tree has closed its gates. It's willing to let in direct relatives of people who live there, Her Illuminated Self, and they're willing to let Peri collect Mari, but that's it. No one else can stay inside the city.

You and Julian as ESPECIALLY unwelcome.

Her Illuminated Self doesn't want to travel any further. White Tree is offering her food, warm bed, and clergy servants. She's good.

Also, the First Wood refugees...they don't want to leave either. Some of them don't want to leave HIS. Others can't or wont make the trip to Stone Hall. A group of them just will not go anywhere with you or Julian. They don't like you, because YOU forced them out of their homes.

White Tree is adamant on not letting these people inside. They aren't shooting arrows at them to go away though, and you see some enterprising bastards are already over charging people for tents, food, and bedrolls.

"Ungrateful fools." Julian says. "I say we leave them."

Lea sighs. "We can't just abandon them. Like it or not, they are still people who sought our protection."

Peri grunts as she pushes the stasis coffin onto the Wagon with Mage's help. "They have a choice to be stupid. I say let 'em." She says.

"Do you think another speech will help?" Tricia asks.

>"Do you think another speech will help?" Tricia asks.

"Yes and no. They don't need motiviation this time; they need some hope and some information that this is not the best they can do."

We need to tell them that they can do better than letting a bunch of folks treat them as unwelcome guests outside the walls and charge them through the nose. They'll be a lot more welcome in Stone Hall or Bronze Peak.

This would be the perfect time for a "Surely Brutus is an honorable man" speech, if we can pull it off.
>>
>>25389356
"Not a speech, no. We could remind them that first wood has no obligation to open their gates, and those who stay here will live without the niceties first wood provides. After that, well, it would really be up to them.

>Her Illuminated Self doesn't want to travel any further. White Tree is offering her food, warm bed, and clergy servants. She's good.
What, she just left? We didn't even talk to her?

>>

>This would be the perfect time for a "Surely Brutus is an honorable man" speech, if we can pull it off.

Something like this might work:

"People of First Wood. I said at the start of our journey that the Light would not put obstacles in our way that we could not overcome. I applaud you for taking the most difficult path. Surely the adversity of life outside the gates of White Tree will surely build character. Spending what little you have on basic necessities, and turning back from the charity of a city like Stone Hall, will surely help you seek guidance from the Light daily about your situation, and would that not be a pious life to live? Those of us traveling on to Stone Hall salute your bravery. May the Light help keep you alive against all odds."

"Paladin Nina Toll is a Green." Julian says. "She spends most of her time in the fields, checking on the farmers and dealing with monster presences."

"I'm not asking to come in, though I'm curious who the order is from."

"The Field Lords, and Paladin Toll." He says. "They're the names on the top of the list of people who can come in." He helpfully shows you a piece of paper tacked to a board of wood.

"I was hoping to speak with Paladin Nina Toll. Do you happen to know where I might find her? And if she's inside, is there someone who could track her down for me?"

"Umm...so...you don't want to come inside?"

You shake your head.

"Okay." He nods. "Umm, I'll go ask." He goes and comes back.

"I had a stableboy go ask for her and tell her that you told me that you told me that you wanted to talk to her so I told him that I told him to tell her that I told you that I told him to talk to her and she's to come out and talk to you because you asked me and I asked him."

Tricia looks at him, and then at you...seeing that you followed that perfect. "Frederick...are you certain that you aren't related to a Leviathan?"

"What's a Leviathan?" He asks.

Tricia shakes her head, and goes back to the paper in her hand. "Crap. Toll's on the bad side of the list."

Stone Hall has loads of spare space and the Mer hate us.
>>
>>25389906
>I wonder...with the influx of refugees, can we get Coral Gate rebuilt again? We might have to split it into 2 districts. One for mers and the other onland for humans.

Coral Gate has pretty much zero population right now, and it's mostly underwater. I don't think it would be a sensible place to drop people off unless they have a pickaxe and a sense of adventure.

Yeah, more or less. He seems to be pretty professional (to a fault), but if he has managed to maintain some semblance of objectivity, then it couldn't hurt.
>>
>>25389936
>Tricia shakes her head, and goes back to the paper in her hand. "Crap. Toll's on the bad side of the list."

Crud.

Given that HIS is on the *good* side of the list, we need to have a little chat with her before we leave her here. Make sure she knows that Toll is not to be trusted, and more generally that not all of her Paladins are good people. After Odette she should know that.
>>
>>25389936
"Perfect. I'm in an antagonistic mood already anyway."

OK, wait. I meant the list posted on the wall of people to let into White Tree. You mean he was on the list that Balles gave us? On the *good* side?

Because that would mean we'd have to seriously start doubting the list.

he was on our good list, most likely.

How and why is Nina here, anyway? Last time we were in White Tree the guard said she'd already left to go to the paladin meeting in Citadel.

>>

He's bound to have made mistakes when compiling the list. He didn't know nearly as much as we did, and probably based the list on a series of factors that made them more likely to be "good".
>>

Yeah, but what happens if Holting was one of the ones he got information from? Perhaps others on the good side aren't, either.

Talk about asking the right questions; this is seriously bad news for us.

Which would explain why HIS turned out to be a whiny little bitch who can't do her job when there's any sort of pressure on.

No, I'm not thrilled about this.
>>
>>25389936
After we point out Lord Holting on our list if he's on there, let's go ahead and make small talk with Frederick about White Tree and Citadel. And the Field Lords.

If there's still time before Toll shows up, we could also ask him if he's happy in White Tree.
>>
>>25389936
>"Crap. Toll's on the bad side of the list."
...Wasn't Balles the guy obsessed with neatness and order?

Wouldn't his list be biased towards people who were all orderly and biased against people who didn't give a shit about rules?
>>
>>25390176
As a paladin you can't really put HIS in the "bad guys" column, can you? She's the incorruptible bastion of the faith or whatever.
>>

That *would* tend to put more Citadel supporters on the "good" side, yeah.

It could be that Lord Holting just was insidiously good at coming off as a decent person and managed to fool Balles.

True. But we still need to have a long discussion with her, since she's clearly neither incorruptible nor a "bastion" of any sort. And now that Citadel's not around, she'll have to learn how to actually do her job.

So ultimately the list is just the people that Balles likes and dislikes, and its thus completely useless for our purposes.

...In hindsight this is completely obvious.

Why were we trusting the list in the first place?
>>
>>25390127
"Double crapping darkness. Take a look at who's on the supposedly good side of the list."

Tricia looks. She shakes her head. "The rest seems pretty cut and dried. I know a few of the other Field Lords....and most of them are on the bad side of the list. Remember Balles wrote this as a way of him thinking who'd be receptive to change and listen to us." She taps the list. "Good way to figure out who you need to take out if you seem approachable." She shrugs. "At least, I'd rather prefer the idea that Holting fooled Balles, and Balles is still one of our guys." She says.

You turn to Frederick. "A leviathan is like a half-fish half-island. They're very good conversationalists, you'd like 'em."

"Oh," He nods. "Okay...to Leviathans like to play mud-pluckin'?"

Tricia blinks. "What?"

"Mud-pluckin', it's a game. I know high fancy Paladins and Occuli don't spend too much time with the small folks, but that's what we do."

"Dare I ask the rules." Tricia asks.

"You take a big stick with a rock tied to one end and the other guy does the same. Then you sink the other guy's stick-rock into the thickest mud you can find, and he does the same. Then you try to pull your stick and rock out first. The tricky part is not having the rock break the stick." He nods. "That's Mud-pluckin'."

Tricia looks at you. "I will never complain about being bored about playing whist with Peri."
>>
>>25390324
"So...its like fishing?"
>>
>>25390324
Yes, a leviathan would definitely like that game.

>>25390324
"Sounds like fun. And yeah, Leviathans would probably have gotten a kick out of that one, though they'd probably have played it with boulders and trees. Their descendants are more our size. Or more precisely, my size. Got a rock-stick?"
>>
On a completely unrelated note, by the way: by the same rules that allow taking over someone's spell if you know their true name, do all such spells tend to end with the death of the caster? Or is there any chance Peace's name is still useful to us?
>>
>>25390324

That makes a creepy amount of sense as a game. It would serve as an effective practice for actual fishing, so it's not a completely pointless pastime, and I can see it being fun...if you're less than 10 years old.

>>25390361

"SSEN!" Tricia snaps. "Back to earth, NOW!" She rolls her eyes. "I asked Julian. The last Paladin that's supposedly still outside woul be one of two that were at Purple Sands. One of them went to the Conference, one of them stayed. We wont know which until later. One's on the top side, one on's the bottom side."

The door opens and a woman walks out. You honestly for a second think that it might be Peace when you see her. She has the same smooth skin and flawless features, and blonde hair. But...no...no it's different. Her eyes are normal hazel, not the two spheres of jet black, and she's missing two fingers on her left hand.

"Lady Paladin Ssen Patrick." She says. She looks at Frederick and rolls her eyes. "He's the Mayor's son." She cocks her head at him. "Anyway, as I thought it was explained. DUe to the current wholesale destruction of the fields around us. We don't have the food to support these people, nor do we have the space. They're welcome to stay, but they should know that I train MY Field Occuli well, and they're now supporting the City Watch." She sniffs. "Also, be sure to contact me at Stone Hall if the whole farming thing doesn't work out. We've been working without Citadel's safety net for a while."
>>
>>25391434
>It could just be that their fields were partially supported by the citadel plenty enchantments.
This is the scenario. Lord Holting also used a lot of Citadel magic to keep the crops plenty here as well. The fields haven't gone full wasteland, but a lot of crops have died on the vine and some fields will have to lay fallow or they WILL become wasteland.

White Tree isn't in a starvation scenario, but they are in need of rationing, and some support would be welcome. They cannot support 2000+ extra people.
>>
>>25391447
>Dealing with Paladin Toll's draconic policies that often end in execution is a heartfelt display of support to your Paladins.

Heh, nice.
>>
>>25391474
>"Also, be sure to contact me at Stone Hall if the whole farming thing doesn't work out. We've been working without Citadel's safety net for a while."

I wouldn't go that far; they're probably attached to the land they're working, and they don't want to give up. But we should definitely offer to trade with them, or otherwise help them somehow.
>>
>>25391239
And now I am imagining Ssen or Toll with a British accent similar to Captain Amelia from Treasure Planet. "Your grace I mean this with the utmost respect but. Zip your howling screamer.
>>
>>25391515
I meant we could explain to them how the fuck to farm without relying on Citadel magic.
>>
>>25391447
"That should get the little shits moving." She grins. "You know, if there's ever some monster family that I need to scare off, like a minotaur or a naga, I just shoot a bunch of arrows at one of them. Think that'll work? I'll try to miss."

Julian's face goes grave and he shakes his head. "No. There's been too much of that already."

"Fuck." Toll sighs. "Alright, you did your part, no one here will say you didn't try and save these shits from themselves."

"It's always a pleasure to speak with you, Lady Paladin Toll."

"Go fuck yourself, Graves." She says and goes back inside her city.

"How?" Mage asks.

"She's a cousin of one of the Field Lords," Julian says. "Also, she's the best arrow shot I've seen. She's better than elves. Also, she'd run into a burning house to save a child and then run back into it to get the cat as well." He nods. "I've seen her do it. She just has a...frank way of speaking." He shrugs. "Her father was far far worse."

"Was he a sailor?" Lea asks.

"Worse, brewer." Julian says.
>>
>>25391523
That'd be more like Ssen. Toll would be swearing every other word.

Also, I think we need to discuss this with Balles. His list has proven to be fucking useless.

"Well, I think that explains how she ended up on Balles' naughty list. He talked to her for a few minutes, and figured nobody could curse that much and not be evil. Same way Holting ended up on the good side, just in reverse; she's abrasive and chaotic but a hero on the inside, and he's nice-sounding on the outside with a creamy evil center."
>>

So, how do the some 1,700 refugees react to our sterling support of the decisions of those who chose to stay?

Because we're leaving as soon as they've had a rest.

>>
>>25391598
It's actually the question of how he came up with these that concerns me. We should devote some time to figuring out WHY we can't rely on the list before we move on.

Actually, I've been wondering it since we got the list.

What, exactly, do we disagree with about how she conducts herself? I'll take Toll's bluntness over Mab's politics any day.
>>

she shoots at monstrous folk.
>>
>>25391568
When we get back to Stone Hall we should consider connecting White Tree to Stone Hall and Bronze Peak's trade network. Light knows they'll need the extra commerce to stay afloat.

>>
>>25391646
On that subject of people not doing their jobs, I don't think we should leave HIS to keep blabbering like that and draining Toll's already scant time and resources.

I know it's an unusual line of thinking, but we ARE the only high-ranking Church official who is willing to look at the "big picture". We're the one who's been out there fighting corruption and saving souls and battling against insane odds against some incredibly fucked-up shit. We've made the tough choices and may actually be DIRECTLY channeling His will.

Couldn't we theoretically replace HIS if she doesn't unfuck herself? Because she really seems unsuited to leading in a crisis, and that's all we've EVER done since we left River's Crossing.
>>
>>25391690
Point. Though it sounds like she doesn't aim to hit, at least. And we can't argue with there being some violent "monsters" in the world, as much as we might wish there weren't. With Citadel contained, perhaps we'll see fewer of them now.
>>
>>25391699
In case it becomes relevant: is HIS's position subject to a vote of no confidence, and how many active Paladins would have to disapprove? Because we have half the non-Citadel Paladins on the continent handy right now.

probably because they get shot at.
>>
>>25391749
We're already the last religious authority left standing. Most of the other Paladins don't give a toss, and I doubt HIS has ever had to do any real leading that didn't involve telling people it was all going to be fine and watching Citadel wipe their proverbial asses for them.

We're practically HIS in all but name, and having the name could be a boon.
>>
>>25391568
"Always good to know a few brewers, I suppose. Stone hall's the next place that can support them, right? We can have whomever choses go up to bronze peak as well.

Julian shakes his head. "I'll go see if anyone is willing to talk to me."

"Maybe Toll can badger Her Illuminated Self into telling these people they need to move." Tricia says. "Either way." She yawns. "We need to get some sleep. Tomorrow, we'll deal with the next problem."

"Agreed." Lea says.

"You really are going to need a solid work-out routine." Peri says, looking at Mari's body. "I'm not gonna run around with baby fat on my hips...also, we better get you riding a horse or six."

"Not a conversation you should be having with a 12-year-old either, Peri, but I think that ship sailed long ago. I think she has a dirtier mind than you do now." You say.

"Trust me. I know." Peri says.

You go to sleep as best you can, and when you and the group assemble you see the number of people who are assembling to get ready to go.

755 people are willing to come with you to Stone Hall.

"I WILL shoot at you if you don't leave!" Toll shouts from the top of the gate at the assembled mob. "YOU HEAR ME! GO WITH THE PALADIN SERPENT AND GRAVES!"

The mob isn't really that keen on the idea. They want in.

And Toll's Occuli aren't keen on THAT idea, and they have bows and arrows. They want them gone.

It doesn't seem like most of the people are the ones who are trying to get in. You're guessing that it's just about 400 or so. THere's only about 50 or so who are pounding and shouting at the gates.

Lea comes up to you panting and shakes her head. "I checked, and it's like Julian thought." She frowns. "It's obvious that a large number of people went back to First Wood." She shakes her head. "They're going to get slaughtered."

"How many?"

"200 max." Lea says. "Mostly a couple of rabble rousers bringing their friends and followers and they brought their families."

"Then where's the rest?" Tricia asks.

"Well, if they aren't coming with us, and they aren't going back to First Wood, or trying to get inside White Tree then..." Peri points and her eyes widen. "Oh, shit."

"They're trying to get back to Citadel." Mage says. "Wonderful."

Julian shakes his head. "This crowd will disperse when Toll shoots a few of them." He nods. "And she's going to do it."

>>
>>25392011
Time for more lamia-of-the-light diplomacy?

"Please, people, listen to me. Trying to return to First Wood, pounding at the gates of White Tree, or even returning to Citadel? It's madness! In searching for an easier way out, you will be condemning yourselves and your families to death, in one form or another."

"Sure, times are hard. They're going to BE hard. But things WILL be better, if you have the patience, the resilience, and the WILLINGNESS TO MAKE IT HAPPEN. We aren't all living in this world to be comfortable, or to live easy and decadent lives even if it must come at the expense of others. No amount of prayer or spouting of scripture can make that right. Why we're here? What the Light truly wants us to do with our lives? It's so that we can draw strength from each other, to help make the world around us a better and safer place for EVERYONE, not just for OURSELVES. We're here so that the Light could be here Himself, through our actions and through our faith."

"I beg of you, please endure. Because it is when the times are darkest that His Light may shine brightest in all of us."

Mage makes his staff make a huge CRACK noise and the crowd turns to look at you.

"Alright, everybody who still has two ears listen up: we're moving out, and the cities we're heading to are a hell of a lot more welcoming. Clear out and let's go, or hang around here and watch Toll play archery exhibitionist. Your call."

"We are DONE being the kind Paladins." Julian says. "We tried that, and now you see the kind of divine wrath that happens when you get the OTHER side of the coin." He shouts. "I didn't get my ass filled with elf arrows for YEARS just have you all die out here in the cold!"

"I would take their advice!" Toll shouts.

Lea sighs. "And this is how our brand new world starts, Paladins maiming and shouting orders at scared and frightened people forcing them to move, while Her Illuminated Self hides in her bed." She shakes her head. "And the saddest thing, is that I see no wrong at all with it. Save for Her Illuminated Self's actions."

"Yeah, well...she's been so Citadel her whole life, I'm impressed she knows how to eat." Peri says.
>>

>>
>>25392283
I already gave my suggestion for a paladiny sort of a speech >>25392101

People then shat on it because they didn't want to try talking again, despite the fact that our last speech wasn't exactly going for "inspiring" so much as "be as sarcastic as possible".

We've convinced Julian that we're truly a servant of the Light. We should try to live up to that.
>>
>>25392297
OK, let's get one-ear and nine-fingers taken care of. I don't suppose that's something a bit of healing potion can help with?

Then let's move out, and whoever follows follows.
>>
>>25392297
"We might have to be stern, but that doesn't mean we have to be done being kind."

Bring some health potions, or bandages, or whatever to the wounded people. I am not sure what is most applicable for lost bits.
>>
>>25392308
And sometimes action speaks a lot louder than words. We can talk to these until we're blue in the face and still get no where with them. It's really their choice if they want to stay or not. We can't stay here for a week giving speech after speech to these people. Those that won't listen to us.
>>
>>25392297
The new reorganization, of things finds that you have 300ish more people with you. The last 100 still refuse to leave the perceived safety of White Tree. However,t hey aren't banging down the gates, and Toll isn't going to shoot at just that many.

So, that gives you with about 1050 refugees for Stone Hall. 200 went back to First Wood, and 450 went to Citadel.

Do you want to try and head off to reclaim either of those two other groups?
>>
>>25392331
If any of the groups it be the ones heading to First Wood. We really don't need elf and human blood running the streets right now.
>>
>>25392331
Unfortunately, they've made their decision, and we can't keep going back and forth with the 1050 refugees we already have.

>>
>>25392344

>>
>>25392331

>>
>>25392331
What options do we have to reclaim them that don't cost us more refugees? They burn food every day, and apparently are prone to splitting off.

I say we send messengers to them, to tell them that if their journeys go poorly, they are welcome in the eastern cities.

We might be able to swing founding a new city in that big middle-are above river's cross. Or rebuilding coral gate.
>>
>>25392331
>Do you want to try and head off to reclaim either of those two other groups?

I think we should. We could take Nightmare and head them off; these folks won't fall over dead if we leave them for a few hours to save the others.

The ones headed back to First Wood are in for a short and pointy death; let's try to head them off first if we can. Then we make a beeline for Citadel and try to stop those folks in time to tell them what will happen to them if they go that route, and ask them if any of them have a burning desire to be a brick wall or a paving stone.
>>
>>25392327
And without the willingness to act there can be no action.

Inspiring others to greatness seems more the Clear schtick than deafening everyone and shouting orders. Lea certainly seems to be catching onto that >>25392297, even if she's outwardly resigning herself to it.

We can be better than that, gentlemen.
>>
>>25392331

Citadel is a very seductive kind of evil. Remember that most people don't know about the Citadel land spirit. They just saw Citadel the prosperous city where it never rains and everything grows. So let's not write them off as "too dumb to live", please.
>>
>>25392331
Yes, head them off with Lightmare.
>>
>>25392422
I'm a bit troubled. We'll plead with them once more to not do this thing they are doing. Then we'll leave. Expect no more miracles than those we can manufacture on our own, the light's more subtle than that.
>>
>>25392433
I have half a mind to let them see the state of Citadel for themselves.
>>
>>25392422
And WHAT THE FUCK would talking at them with another speech have done differently? We CANNOT promise these people that we will be able to shit out puppies, sunshine, and fucking rainbows for them. THATS what they want to hear not the truth. And there is no way we will convince them to follow us without lying our asses off to them. NOT the way to start our new world at all.
>>
>>25392389
>As for the Citadel group? Meh. They're too dumb to live anyway.
They'll either show up later going 'what the unholy fuck happened to Citadel' or they won't show up at all. Remember, I don't think word about whats happened there has spread this far.

I'm happy with either one, really.
>>
>>25392433
Fine. We try to talk them into following us. If they don't. They don't.
>>
>>25392460
Agreed, if they don't listen, then it'll be like talking to a future wall.
>>
Let the citadel ones see citadel. It's made of bones, organs, steel, and stone. They'll get what we were hinting at.

the white tree folk will be rebuffed by elves and join us as well, but we should head them off anyway, since they'll have casualties.
>>
>>25392471
>Let the citadel ones see citadel. It's made of bones, organs, steel, and stone. They'll get what we were hinting at.

Perhaps they'll catch up while we're heading off the ones going to First Wood.
>>
>>25392448
Did you even read the suggested speech? Because it strikes me that you didn't read the speech. The entire point was to try and explain to people, in very charged, optimistic, hopefully inspiring terms that they would need to create their own future: but to also instill a belief that they could actually do it.

NOT to blow sunshine up their fucking skirts, and NOT to be a sarcastic asshole. Those aren't the only options, you know.
>>
>>25392494
We've pretty much got the crowd here at White Tree under control to the extent they're going to be. But I do think the suggested speech sounds pretty good for the Citadel crowd. Let's use it there.

The ones returning to First Wood will need a different speech, though.
>>
Nobody likes escort missions. Not even paladins.

Especially not 2,000 simultaneous escort missions. We can't even blame fate for this.
>>
You get the mass of refugees moving. They're not happy, but they're willing to follow Julian's commands.

"I've picked out a few representatives." Julian says. "I've spread the word that if they need to talk to us, they can talk to them." He shrugs. "Now they'll have someone else to yell at."

Lea shakes her head.

You pause the wagon.

"Something up, Ssen?"

"I'm going to get the ones that went to First Wood." You say. "I was sarcastic to them, what was I supposed to think would happen?"

Lea's face lights up.

"We'll stay with the horde." MariPeri say. "And with us." She pats the second wagon that has Mari's body in it.

"I'll stay." Mage says. "If there's something that we need you back, I'll send a message to you...somehow."

You have a feeling that you'll just know.

Tricia also jumps into the wagon with you and Lea. "You're not going anywhere without me."

"May His Light watch over you." Julian says.

You race off with Lightmare.

Thankfully, it's easy to catch up to the group of refugees. They're traveling in a group, and you have Lightmare.

Sadly, they don't look happy to see you. An assortment of simple knives, antique weapons, a few hunting bows, and one actual sword, are drawn.

"Go away!" The one who looks to be in charge (or at least with the loudest voice and strongest charisma) says. "You let those elves take our homes for us! We're taking them back!"
>>
>>25392511
We already had one escort mission across the continent, why must we do so again only with more people that are actually idiots?
>>
>>25392529
(Because after you succeed or fail to return these two groups, I'm going to speed time up to where you just arrive at River's Crossing, cause I don't want to spend an entire thread about that journey, as interesting as it might possibly be?)
>>
>>25392526
"You're two hundred starving refugees. They're an army. It doesn't take a genius to figure out how that will end. I'm sorry you lost your homes to Mab's stupid bloody political Powerplay, but I can't in good conscience let you all run off to get yourself killed for them. Your lives are worth more than that."
>>
>>25392526
"Oh, you're taking them back? All two hundred of you? Ignoring for a moment the question of how you'll keep them, what makes you think you'll even get close enough to use those swords and knives? Each of you is going to have a half-dozen arrows in you before you even see an elf. If you're very, very lucky, you might get a brief moment of revenge before you die. Is there anyone here who thinks for a moment that they can do better than that?

No, it isn't fair, and it isn't right. It is, however, reality. Would you and your families really rather be dead than move?

It's a piece of land; there are others, and it is not irreplaceable. Your lives are irreplaceable. Your families' lives are irreplaceable. If you're willing to fight this hard to die, why not come with me and fight this hard to live?"
>>
>>25392526
I am considering whether or not we should just straight up plead with them.

"Please. Your homes have been lost, and that is a tragedy, yes, but it is one you can recover from. You still have a future. I beg you all, please don't walk into another tragedy."
>>
>>25392526
"... or die trying, right?"
>>25392508
You think the same speech would work on both?
>>
>>25392573

This, but drop the "It doesn't take a genius"; let's not insult them while we're trying to convince them.
>>
>>25392602

>>
>>25392585

>>25392595

"You're two hundred starving refugees. They're an army. Ignoring for a moment the question of how you'll keep them, what makes you think you'll even get close enough to use those swords and knives? Is there anyone here who thinks for a moment that they can do better than that?" You say.

There's a pause as the warriors of the group snarl, but a few look at their families, at their children, who have picked up little weapons of their own.

"I'm sorry you lost your homes to Mab's stupid bloody political Powerplay, but I can't in good conscience let you all run off to get yourself killed for them. Your lives are worth more than that.

"No, it isn't fair, and it isn't right. It is, however, reality. Would you and your families really rather be dead than move?

"They're nothing but a bunch of heathen elves!" The leader snaps. "We have His Light on our side, and we're in the right! We just need to sneak in, find that Mab bitch, and then get them to back off or we cut their queen's throat!" He shouts. "We can DO this! The Paladins may have turned their backs on His Light, but I haven't!"
>>
>>25392669
Oh BOY, so these guys ARE in fact too stupid to live. Wow i cannot top that kind of idiocy.
>>
>>25392669
"You really think thats gonna work? You're gonna have to keep Mab hostage for as long as you stay there to stop the elves from just killing you, and even then there's more than a few elves who would just attack you anyway to get her out of the way."
>>
>>25392669
You think that you can hold the leader of the elves, a people whose politics is more full of backstabbing than a room full of assassins, you've got another thing coming.

If she doesn't kill you herself, the other elves will either simply let her die, or kill you to get to her.
>>
>>25392669
Slither up closer to the leader. Perhaps even put a hand on his shoulder.

"Please, let the war be done. The world doesn't need a dead elf queen and 200 dead men, women, and children. All of you, just... live. Live good lives. Find a home with your families."
>>
>>25392669
You DO realize that she was the elf that allowed you to leave the city and not be rounded up and slaughtered like SOOOOOO many others in her court would have right? Honestly there are MANY elves in the Court that called for all of your families deaths. What on earth do you fucking think holding a knife to the throat of your benefactor is going to fucking do other than get everyone in the area shot full of fucking holes?
>>
>>25392669
"Mab, and Julian, are the reason you left First Wood alive, believe it or not. There are more than a few elves who would prefer her dead, along with all of you, and anyone else without pointy ears. I'm hoping once we get that sorted out that humans may one day be welcome in First Wood again. But today is not that day.

And while His Light will welcome you at the end of your journey, you should not be so eager to embark on it."

>>25392713
Then this.
>>
>>25392669
"Listen to yourself. I don't know about the rest of you, but those words of hate and vengeance are as far from the Light and the Teachings as I have heard."

"The cycle of vengeance and hate must stop. And believe it or not, Mab has taken the first step simply by allowing you to leave peacefully. The rest of the Court wanted far worse."
>>
>>25392669
"Elf politics aren't as simple as you think they are. There are many elves who'd let you kill Mab and then kill you anyways just so they can get a shot at the throne. And this is assuming you even get that far int he first place."
>>
>>25392714
let's try one of the more slightly graceful approaches, not one like this. We were JUST NOW kicking ourselves over our harsh and sarcastic words.
>>
>>25392719
>"Listen to yourself. I don't know about the rest of you, but those words of hate and vengeance are as far from the Light and the Teachings as I have heard."
>"The cycle of vengeance and hate must stop. And believe it or not, Mab has taken the first step simply by allowing you to leave peacefully. The rest of the Court wanted far worse."

I like this better than my first paragraph.

You get down from the Wagon and slither up to the man. You try to reach out to touch him, but he snarls and pushes away.

"Listen to yourself. I don't know about the rest of you, but those words of hate and vengeance are as far from the Light and the Teachings as I have heard. The cycle of vengeance and hate must stop. And believe it or not, Mab has taken the first step simply by allowing you to leave peacefully. The rest of the Court wanted far worse.

The leader spits in your face. "Monster! You don't know anything about what it is to make a home, raise a family, and then have it be ripped away. You never will and you never can! It makes me sick to ever hear you talking about His Light."

He looks at his mob. "We are His Light's chosen people! We have been given a chance to do something that matters!"

The bad news is that there's about 50 or so people that answer his cheer. Some of them are depressingly young.

The good news is that the majority is hanging back and looks unsure, and are looking warily at the trees.

"Now, get out of my way Paladin Serpent." The man snarls. "Or I will cut you down like all the other elves that will be in my way to reclaim what is mine by right!"
>>
This is the one time I've ever wanted to say "Won't somebody please think of the children!"

I don't know how I should feel about that.
>>
>>25392789
Indeed.

But seriously, this "Mab" is trying to work for us. Fucking that up would be retarded.
>>

Then come at me. Come at a Paladin of His Light. With all your fury and hate and we'll see who His Light favors.
>>
>>25392790
"Very well, then. If you can best me in single combat, I'll take your word that you can fight the entire Elven court with less than two hundred men. If I beat you, you agree to come quietly. Because if you can't beat me, then there's no way you'll survive against Elves in their natural element."
>>
>>25392790
"Don't you dare suggest I don't know what it's like to have a family, or to lose one. But if you're so eager to fight, then go right ahead. After all, if 50 can stop a whole army, then surely you can stop one lamia, right?"

I'm all for using him as an object lesson. Quick wrap to prove our point, then let him go. Anyone not convinced after that can march off and die.
>>
>>25392790
You push your bounds, and you push them hard. I will not let you past so that you may lead others to their death.

I lost my adoptive father not more than a year ago, a brave paladin and I've nearly lost the woman I love more than once.

"My birth parents were killed when I was a child. My adoptive father died recently as well. Until a year ago I was still in mourning."

"A house is not a home without a family. I will do nothing to cut you down myself, but remember: your deaths will be mourned, and worse they will have been for nothing."

"I will pray for your souls if you insist on leading these people to their deaths."

It's a joke, really. The man is nothing, you effortlessly use quick-quick to make it look like his blade passed right through you, and then you snap your tail up and around his waist and with a simple twist, he's on the ground, gasping and scratching at you, trying to break free.

Your glare isn't as great as Julian's is, but its enough to make the rest of the other malcontents sheathe their weapons. Slowly they turn away and start marching back they way they came. Lea and Tricia helping them along. It's obvious that they still are endlessly unhappy with you, and their situation, but they've had the fight knocked out of them.

In single doses at least.

Ssen is a giant fucking snake woman and we've already established that those two are kinky as fuck and they probably love bondage

Either of these.

Obligatory: How lewd!

Dinner at Granny's suggested otherwise. Also the leash.

Let them try. I can't see that ending in any other way than Lea putting a few over her knee and Tricia siccing her moth friends on their clothes.

That just says they play it up for laughs. Lots of people do that.
>>
>>25393093
You're no fun you know that?
>>
>>25393091

No, if you make Ssen that angry the jokes are directed at you. You'll beg for the poison claws after the first few.
>>
"The next ones, I think, will be either much, much easier or much, much harder. Depending on how they react to the corpse-wall. Wish me and my babble luck. Politeness, too, if you think I need it."

Tricia smiles. "I love it when you babble."

You race off, it's a couple of hours but thank His Light for Lightmare. Just don't ask what he's been chewing in his mouth for the day. At least it stopped twitching.

The group of refugees that are citadel bound have just reached the start of the wasteland when you catch up to them. They made better time as they weren't pretending to gear for war, but traveling on used roads.

They're just staring at the grey, cracked or muddy ground, and the giant white bulge that was Citadel.

They look at you. No one's yelling at you, or angry. They just have a mix of despair, confusion, and a need for it to be fixed. They want it all better, and all they see is a dead world and that...thing...on the horizon.

Even if stone hall and coral gate and bronze peak are full, we can just start a NEW town!

"You always have a choice; more choices than you realize. Right now, you're seeing the choice between the ugly side of CItadel or a huge unknown in Stone Hall. But there's also the choice between heading off defeated, or being hopeful for the new life you're going to build. I've spent my life trying to do what seems impossible, like stopping *that* monstrosity [point off to Citadel]. And it always starts with deciding that I'm *going* to do it; you can't pull things like that off without hope. Though a bit of insanity helps too."

>>
>>25393263
Absolutely. And that's been our own goal as well; we want to destroy Citadel the malicious land spirit (which these folks don't truly know about yet), but not Citadel the city. And while we don't want to bring back Citadel the comforting paradise where everything is handled for you and you have no thinking to do, that doesn't mean we don't want to make things better for people.

The crowd turns. A few take comfort and strength from your words, a few turn because it's the sensible thing to do now, most turn because the others are turning, but the biggest reason that people obey you is because...there's no other option available.

Moving the refugees takes a lot of doing. You, Julian, and the Dawnchasers are always either prodding, threatening, begging, delegating so that others get yelled at, or some other method to keep the people moving. You and Julian have had to settle more than a few fights and challenges with a swift and brutal beat-down. That asshole who tried to lead the charge on First Wood is a repeat offender. Nothing you or Julian do makes him happy, and he shouts very loudly. You're reminded of the First Stone Hall assholes, a lot.

But finally, you get a short reprieve as your group of 1600 strong make camp across the river from River's Crossing.

"And so, the glorious heroes return home." Tricia says as she leans on you. "To think, we could have just become pelt traders."

We should definitely drop by River's Crossing (it nothing else, we have some interesting tales for Alexander), but I really hope none of the troublemakers follow us.

I'm pretty sure retirement for us means becoming Bjorn of our order. We'd be laying at the top of the tower in the sun and some acolyte shows up and asks us to tell the stories of old. Sometimes they interrupt private time with Trich.

There are safety nets installed around the tower for a reason.

>Every time I try to get an artfag in on this, it's like explaining homestuck or something. I must be bad with words.

You don't have to give the full background of everything awesome about the quest for that. That would take about, oh, 60 threads or so. Just point to the reference art on 1d4chan and link to specific descriptive posts.

With the nets in place, it could be a fun part of the experience. "Wheeeeee! Throw me again!"

Besides, sometimes Ssen might just let them watch.

>>25393394
yeah, but I prefer it near the beginning of a thread, while I'm feeling all hopeful.

I love all talk about Ssen's retirement. Those students really must learn to knock one day.
>>
>>25393392
I would seriously hope that the kingdom has laws about entrapment. Because otherwise Paladins could pretty easily abuse that.
>>
>>25393406
No, that's now how we roll. We make like we're going to let them watch, and then suddenly they're on fire. Or out of the window. or poisoned.
>>
So how are we going to keep these refugees from descending like locusts onto River's Crossing? An more importantly, how badly has the probable slump in trade hit our hometown?
>>
>>25393423
Or all three.
>>
>>25393424
hopefully the river will keep them at bay. Hopefully.

Also, our home town HAS run the numbers, they can survive on their own without trade. It's honestly probably one of the better-off small villages from their preperations.
>>
>>25393424
>So how are we going to keep these refugees from descending like locusts onto River's Crossing? An more importantly, how badly has the probable slump in trade hit our hometown?

River's Crossing is a much smaller town; they shouldn't need unnaturally productive farmland to keep their people fed. They're also a lot further away from Grand Citadel, making it more likely that they're unaffected.
>>
>>25393424
Anyone who tries anything gets bitten.
>>
>>25393444

>>
>>25393451
True.
>>
>>25393433
>>25393434
Good news, then. But still seems unlikely they could handle a permanent influx of refugees on any sort of large scale.
>>25393444
Fair enough. We are, after all, defending our home.
>>
>>25393451
We only protect until someone does something criminal and/or exceedingly stupid.
>>
>>25393424
>So how are we going to keep these refugees from descending like locusts onto River's Crossing?

We're not going to stick around too long; River's Crossing can survive half a day of whatever adventurous subset decides to wander into town. If a few people decide they want to stay and be productive, the town can probably absorb that, but I think everyone's going to be able to see pretty easily that it's a cozy little hamlet and not anywhere near the size of White Tree.
>>
>>25393457
we JUST talked to a whole CROWD of people about how it's better to put down your weapons and walk away than defend their homes, in their instance.

Let's just remind them that river's crossing is too small for all of them, and they would all starve, town along with them.
>>
>>25393463
Attacking a paladin is both.
>>
>>25393467
I think you underestimate the stupidity of desperate people.

MY big question is this:

How will we get our multi-ton "meditation" rock to the top of the tower?
>>
>>25393478
Mage.
>>
>>25393468
The angle comparing taking over River's Crossing to the elves taking over First Wood might convince some of them.
>>
>>25393488
>The angle comparing taking over River's Crossing to the elves taking over First Wood might convince some of them.

Nice thinking.
>>
>>25393486
It's on the list. Way down at the bottom it just says "meditation rock".

This initially goes unexplained, and confuses Mage for decades.
>>
>>25393486
>Mage, I demand you get this rock to the top of that tower

>>
>>25393635
>he may have paid us back with that winter lining.

Oh, I don't want to suggest that he owes us. But we could still ask about it as a research project. We can be the test case, and then he has a whole population of chilly lizardfolk to sell it to.
>>
>>25393651
And thus, the tailsock was born.

And Isen never let us hear the end of it, ever.
>>
>>25393662

>>
>>25393675
change, as always, brings good and bad.
>>
>>25393662
We can always paralyze him every time he tries to give us shit over it.

>>
>>25393746
Nah. With Ssen's size, the tailsocks should be large enough that we can stuff Isen inside an unused one like a bag.
>>
>>25393776
I never did get an update on how big we were.
>>
>>25393793
19 threads ago, back in Coral Gate for the first time, Ssen was 16-17 feet long. Seems unlikely that she has grown all that significantly since then; it hasn't been that long.
>>
>>25393793
>>25393833
Diameter would be useful to know, though. Though that seems unlikely to significantly increase either; that'd be more a naga's domain. (Unless we take a detour to the Goat Sanctuary while we're in Bronze Peak.)
