Events Summary:

You disguised yourself as a subordinate of the lich, Magnock, to infiltrate his base and save your friends.

However, before you could escape, the lich Yi Fang appeared, backed by powerful angels, and the forces of the ringed city. Fang destroyed the lich with ease, and you confronted him, prepared to hold out while your friends teleported to safety.

To your surprise, Fang was willing to negotiate, and quickly wrapped you up in a scheme to escape back to Archon right under the nose of the angels.

It wasn't long before you encountered Sandalphon - the Most High, leader of the angels. While Abigail avoided notice, he honed in on you, demanding that Fang, who was pretending that you were his summon, turn you in for study. Unwilling to endanger your allies, you submitted to capture.

The angel Michael, one of the greatest healers in the world, is responsible for your 'examination'. But a curse he received from a Demon Lord twisted his mind into that of a psychotic madman - and you were at his mercy.

Auriel is working with him to restore her powers. You communciated with her telepathically, begging her for help and informing her of Michael's insanity, but you're not sure if you convinced her of the truth.

However, using the power of the two Shards of Darkness you've gathered, you manage to burst free of your cage and attack and consume Michael. Now, you're on the run in the middle of the Ringed City - the beating heart of angel territory.

Ability Tree

GREEN abilities have been unlocked and learned.

BLUE abilties are unlocked, but are not yet purchased.

RED abilities are revealed, but locked due to prerequisites.

UNDERLINED abilities are active-use, as opposed to passive. Not all active abilities require mana.

Unlocked Ability Descriptions:

Books the Main Character has read:

http://pastebin.com/dAXR00gP

-----------
Active (intent-use abilities that don't require mana)
-----------

Consume - Devour the latent energy of enemies and magical artifacts to add to your own power and restore your health.

Glide - Your aura allows you to glide, dropping safely from large heights or covering large distances if starting from a high position. Gliding is always stealthier than flying.

Flight - Spread wings of darkness to soar through the air. Carrying capacity is based on physical strength.

Supersonic - Fly at supersonic speeds. You'll move extremely fast, but suffer a large penalty to stealth and magic stealth. Takes 1 turn to activate.

Mimic - Take on the vague form of things you've seen. Won't stand up to close examination, but works well in the dark.

Snuff - You shadow can put out the lights it touches.

Blink - Sight-range teleportation. (Cannot blink through walls, through the ground, into places you can't see, etc. 5-turn cooldown in battle. Auto-cooldown if battle ends. You can only Blink yourself and inanimate objects on your person. Max range 1/4 mile or 0.4 kilometers)

Focus - With a burst of concentration, you can significantly improve your detection of both the mundane and magical, but you also drastically increase the risk of giving yourself away. (think sonic ping)

Berserk - Ignore your defenses and strike all around you in a vicious physical assault. Difficult to determine friend from foe.

Shadow Eater - Eat an enemy's shadow for a small heal. Their shadow will regenerate over the course of a day. They might notice it's missing...
>>

Doom Aura - Puts out all lights in an area at once. Large penalty to dodge if used during battle.

Compress - By sacrificing strength and defense, you can compress yourself and your aura to the size of a small mouse, greatly increasing dodge and physical and magical stealth. Warning: requires a turn to activate and deactivate.

-----------
Spells (and other abilities that DO use mana)
-----------

Shadow Strike - Strike the foe with needles of darkness. (base power 2. Costs 2 mana)

Shadow Assault - Launch a flurry of shadowy projectiles at the enemy. (base power 4. Costs 4 mana. Can hit multiple enemies)

Shadow Beam - A concentrated beam of shadow power. Attacks faster than shadow strike/assault, and is more accurate. (Costs 6 mana; 6 base damage)

Nightflare - Disrupt target spell or enchantment. (costs 2 mana)

Nightblaze - Cancel enchantments and spells in an area around you. Success and range based on mana spent. (Spend 4 to 10 mana. Radius: 30 feet. Additional 20 feet per mana. Alternate: Spend 10 mana to attempt to cancel any one single spell in sight-range with a greatly enhanced success rate)

Shadowmeld - Magic-based stealth. Pay any amount of mana. Physical and magical stealth increases based on how much mana was spent until stealth is broken. Can be used to re-stealth mid-battle.

Shade - Create an illusory projection of yourself to confuse enemies. (dodge buff. Costs 1 mana)

Spirit Whip - Lash the enemy with a whip of spirit magic. (base power 2. Costs 2 mana)

Bind - Trap an enemy in ropes of spirit magic. May spend 0 to 10 mana (determines strength).

Water Strike - A pressurized blast of water imbued with magical force. (2 base power. Costs 2 mana)

Heal - Spend either 2, 4, or 6 mana to heal a target 4, 7, or 10 HP, respectively.

Purify - Spend 3 Mana: 100% chance to heal 1 ailment on target. Spend 6 mana: 85% chance to heal all target's ailments. Spend 9 mana: heal all of a target's ailments and the ailments of all those you are physically touching.

-----------
Summons
-----------

Wisp - A shadowy wisp from the Nether. (2 base shadow attack). Costs 1 mana to summon, 1 mana per action. Never breaks your control; if you run out of mana, it will merely vanish. [Level 0, Shadow]

You grab Ila and fly out the window.

The tower collapses behind you. You dive down, straight into a rising, billowing cloud of pale smoke. You sprint into an alley as a roar of stone crashes to the ground.

You lay Ila against the wall even as the dust rolls over you.

Inspiration strikes you.

<Ila, I'm going to the Great Gardens to find something hidden there,> you lie. <Try and meet me there, if you can.>

If she's captured, they'll make her talk...or at least ask her what she knows. Now she'll give them misinformation.

Points of light dart in the sky above you. More people - both normal, and angelic - are running towards the building. You sprint down to the corner of the alley.

Three things grab your attention - stairs, leading down and out from the gleaming white boulevard you're standing on. A sewer grate. Then, another building across the street.

What do you do?

>Shit! Before we go, we need to ask Ila to find the body of Mike's victim in the Great Gardens! She'll definitely try hard to find it!

She's bound in spirit. Unbinding her would cause her to attack you.

People seem to think that if she can't hear their orders, you'll be safe, but it's been made clear that she has several standing orders to default to if no angels are around to direct her.

Just clearing that up; it's stuff that's already been gone over, but it was a while ago back in the battle at Evinbrook.

>>

>>
>>25349372
Actually that raises a question SM.

When we specify mana expenditure for variable power skills, are you going to want the pre-Oneness cost and then you take the 20% off, or do you want us to factor it in beforehand?
>>
>>25349250

You've selected 2-C: head into the sewers, use both compress and shadowmeld.

Some people said 10 mana; others 5-10. I'll average it to 7 mana.

Mana: 13/20

>writing
>>
>>25349401
>>25349410

Oh yeah, you bought it.

You're spending 7 mana. 20% off is...1.4.

That will always round down, fyi.

>Mana: 14/20

And something else, since oneness will always reduce all shadow magic by at least 1, we should always cast Shadowmeld for 1 (reduced to 0) for a perma stealth boost.

Can we make this out new base form for when we aren't dealing with humans or anything? Because it looks awesome.
>>
>>25349435
From what I understand out plan is to go to the "soul registry" and try to free the slaved mages.
Even if they end up recaptured, it will cause a lot of chaos, and at least a few will probably escape if they can teleport.
there is probably at least one angel there though, of dubious strength.
>>

>>
>>25349512
I concur with this anon. We can just replicate the shirt, pants and shoes. Already have a utility belt.

I'd imagine it's going to be very well guarded.

That is, unless they rely on the fact that the enslaved mages are compelled to obey orders and won't even try stealing back their souls.
>>
>>25349435

Also, let's be honest.

If we eat that airship, we're going to kill people. Some of whom won't deserve it. Michael was a monster. Not everyone in Ring City is.

Not that I'd object to use becoming a little more morally ambiguous. Just raising a point here.

unless the ship is currently docked, then removing it's power source will leave the structure intact as the Sky-Sever should not be affecting it...

also, Might I suggest that next upgrade we get Wind Resistance 2, it would allow for less risk running the Sky-Sever...

Now is not the time to stir up trouble. You gather your mana, and swirl it about yourself like cloak, melding into the scant shadows of the alley.

>Mana: 14/20

>you're now in stealth!

But just to be sure...you take your aura...and Compress it.

With an odd -POP!-, you suddenly snap to the size of a mouse.

You skitter across the white stone street and Ink into the sewer grate.

And not a moment too soon! A even thumping of metal armor crashes up the stairs you'd been contemplating and pours out onto the street, braving the smoke. You hear a man shout, rapidly dividing the troops into the search crew. They spread out through the smog of dust with disciplined precision. None of them are angels.

A shout goes up. They've found Ila.

The sewer is dark. A trickle of light filters down through the grate you dropped through. Lines of Light energy pulse through metal wires that are held firm to the stone by adamantium clasps. Your senses tell you they lead to the center of the city, then below, to the various mana pools. The lines themselves spread through the street and out to the buildings.

What do you do?

>go back up; use the cloud to pick off the soldiers
>see if you can listen in on their conversation with Ila
>use Focus; try to get a heading toward where the mage souls are kept
>some other strategy
>>
>>25349512

I agree by virtue of the fact that the little shadow quiff makes us look like Shadow Tintin.
>>
>>25349519

We could be practically sacrificing the free mages to make our escape and to cause chaos and we don't know if it is even possible to free the souls without physically delivering them to their owner or at all. The plan is full of holes and conjectures that's why I originally favored getting out fast. But if we are going to try lets keep our stealth and avoid using focus at all.

Check the tree. We already did.
>>
You decide that you need to make distance between yourself and the tower as quickly as possible.

You delve into the sewers, sprinting along a hall. You notice a flight of stairs, and, remembering that the room you sensed earlier was relatively deep, take them down.

You're pretty confident in your stealth...and you can't feel anything nearby. You use Focus.

The sewers bloom to life. You feel hundreds of rats, some in the water, others crawling about in cracks between the tunnels. Further on ahead, toward the center of the city, loom the bright spots of the mana pools. You glance up. As you get closer to the center, the adamantium cables conducting the mana to various buildings also grows thicker, like the trunk of a tree.

Several stories down, you feel the room again. There are hundreds of tiny orbs of light - like shells, encapsulating darkness. Some few dozens hold Spirit, but most are Shadow. The orbs are arranged in regular patterns.

That has to be it.

But it's not the only thing you sense. Above you, people are pouring toward and away from the fallen tower. Angels are flying from all corners of the city. You can feel more down below - none near you, but closer to the soul room, and the central mana-pool area, they rapidly increase in density.

You make your way down, further toward the center.

What do you do?

>continue on toward the soul room

I have a better idea than supersonic, we want to leave the city we just follow the sewers away from the city they will eventually lead to the sea or a river that leads to the sea. We are less likely to be seem or detected and is unlikely that the angel will come looking at the sewers.

I know that I supported it earlier, but that's just because I think we're going to need a new form for Harry Potter adventures with Abigail.

And that just screams Mr Shadow. Also, it's highly recognisable. So when we go around in stealth, androgynous or 'Shadow Abigail' form, it'll be harder to associate us with the ever grinning Mr Shadow.

I suppose dark, murky water is about as anti-angel territory as we can hope for. Maybe we should scout out an escape route first?
>>
You continue on toward the soul room.

It's an uneventful journey. You're silent, and sneaky. The angels continue to gather around the tower. Nothing senses your movements.

A mere hall from the room, you turn a corner.

A Shadow mage stands in front of you. You're stunned.

But then, they don't have souls to detect.

He takes a step, then stops. He looks down, straight at you. You both sit there, staring at each other.

What do you do?

You walk right on by. You get two feet past when the man speaks.

"...wait."

You stop.

"...are you important?" the mage asks.

Something about his question is odd. You feel compelled to answer.

<Not at all,> you say. <Just a mote of shadow.>

You can feel relief roll off him. "I see. If you're not important, I don't need to report you. In fact, I shouldn't even waste time noticing you."

<No, you shouldn't.>

The man begins to walk away. "...Ila told us the words of a shadow she met. Do you know Ila?"

<We've met.>

The man turns the corner without another word.

Well. No time to waste.

You head toward the soul chamber, walking down the hallway.

You reach the final corner and peak your head around the edge. A short tunnel leads up to a door. It looks to be made of solid adamantium. Minute figures and shapes are carved on its surface in an intricate pattern. Light leading from the thick cables above pulses through it in waves.

Three angels stand guard outside the door. They are the run-of-the mill variety...but still...three at once might be difficult.

You sit there for a moment, contemplating your next move.

The magic on the door stops. You stiffen.

The door begins to creak open.

You feel something emerging from the door. Light...and...

...Lightning.

One presence emerges.

He's an angel - but not like any you've seen before. He walks with a confident, easy swagger. Black hair droops from around his head in an unkempt mane. The room darkens around him - and it's a darkness you cannot penetrate.

But it isn't shadow. No - he's bending the light. You've seen mages use the light...but this angel dominates it.

The other angels immediately salute this newcomer, pounding their fists to their white tabards.

"I hope you'll put the spells to good use," the angel says. "Michael spent decades perfecting it, after the city was first founded. It allowed us to truly begin the empire. A land where shadow was finally, firmly reigned in."

The other presence steps from the door.

You freeze in place.

It's Duke Vellik.

Part of you wants to lunge forward and demand an explanation. Another part of you feels betrayed. But mostly, you're just too surprised to do anything.

"I will," Vellik says. "I've a few underlings that could be much more useful as loyal servants than unruly mages. One, in particular, in fact. Highly useful."

"Useful for the Ring City, as well?"

"Of course, Lucifer," Vellik says smoothly. "As long as your support is guaranteed against Kan-Abar."

"The faster you help us repair the Velarion, the faster it will be under your command, for the duration of the war," Lucifer says. "Come. There's plenty more to see."

They walk down the hall toward you.

The door begins to shut behind them.

If Ila has been spreading tales about us the shadow and spirit mages might be more coherant then I feared. So they might have a chance at escaping once we free them.
>>
>>25350744
That may be, but we've made her see our side once before, and we have a witness and victim now to prove it. Ila.
>>
>>25350747

Flint and Auriel aren't being held as prisoners though, they can get out on their own and we can regroup with them later if they wish. If things get hot and we need to leave in a hurry, I think we can safely leave them behind and trust they won't be in urgent danger.

You blink into the soul vault just as it's about to seal itself closed, and slip inside.

You here Lucifer's voice. "...did you sense something?"

"No," Vellik says.

The door grinds against the floor, slowly closing...and grinds to a stop with a good foot and a half left to go.

"Dammit, not again."

"Get the mechanics down here," Lucifer's voice says. "We're headed to the control sector anyway. We'll have them up the mana flow to this section of the city."

One of the angels takes off at a quick run. You feel Lucifer and Vellik swiftly walk down one of the long corridors. Two angels remain on the outside of the vault door.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D9TtYbt7mCg

You turn.

Rising before you are neat, even shelves. Spherical orbs of pale light rest within dusty metal arms that keep each sphere secure.

There's hundreds of them. Maybe thousands.

Thousands of souls...enslaved.

You wonder when they're taken. When they're as young as Abigail? Before they even know what they are? How long have they lived like this?

You know instinctively - this is not right. This must end.

But how?

If you break the spheres...might you kill them? Or free them?

One particular sphere grabs your attention. It feels...familiar.

You wander down the aisle. It's low enough for you to see it easily. A soft, dark light spins in the core of the glassy orb.

Ila.

She's held there. Twisting...slowly turning.

What do you do?

>break Ila's sphere
>break them all
>use Nightflare
>it's too risky. Leave.
>something else
>>
>>25350744

But she will know we were right and we didnt lie to her.

On the note of Sandalphon we really need to get more information on all the other angels, I fuck we didn't know about Lucifer until now. And he is alsmot as scary as Sandalphon.
>>

It needs to be done. She'll understand when she takes a step back and sees the bigger picture.
>>

>>25350755

Flint, Auriel, Shadow Bro and lla.

If we have to choose, I say Shadow Bro and lla. By simple virtue of the fact that Flint and Auriel are safer in Ring City than anywhere else.
>>
>>25350744
Yeah, in all likelihood, if we free all the enslaved mages at once it's going to turn into an angel holocaust.

There's a good chance Auriel will end up dying, since she's still in her weakened state.
>>
>>25350781
NIGHTFLARE WITH 8 MANA.
>>
>>25350781

I doubt we can erase a Soul with Nightflare. On the other hand, the Spheres might have failsafes to destroy the soul if they're broken.

Nightflare.
>>
>>25350781
>You here Lucifer's voice. "...did you sense something?"
>"No," Vellik says.

Ha ha, we will refrain from stabbing you the next time we see you for that, Vellik.
>>
>>25350744
It's a different kind of discord. What we're about to do is deliver a short-term crippling (assuming we do some serious property damage before moping the fuck out) blow that ultimately will serve to unite our opposition in the cause of our destruction. Bringing to light the level of corruption at the top of the Angels' organization will (if managed right) cause unbridgeable rifts to form within Sandalphon's ranks and the entire support mechanism (the baseline humans that make the food and repair the weapons). That could be crippling for them during the war we probably just kicked off.
>>

alright peps. we have a problem. breaking the spheres will do one of 2 things. free them. or kill them.

i say we take one sphere. no Ila's. break it. and focus to see what happens to the shadow inside. if it does something similar to steward? then most likely it frees them. if not then it kills them. figure out where to do go from there
>>
>>25350769

Auriel knows exactly what's going on.

She doesn't like it, but we're likely about to kill dozens of angels by proxy, release a whole bunch of shadow mages and basically seriously fracture Ring City's power.

We';re gonna need a 100 for that diplo roll.

can we grab a random one that isn't Ila's, and physically break it? That way, we should be able to see if it frees the soul or kills it...

I propose we move to the middle of the vault (hopefully allowing the massive quantity of restrained souls to help conceal our magics), try Physically breaking one and using Night flare on one. This way, we can see which methods do and don't work. after all, if night flare can free them, then a full power nightblaze should free all of them... or if nightflare just kills them, but breaking them frees them, then we spend that little extra time going Berzerk Juggernaut on them...

Shadow floods your vision. Hundreds of souls rush back to their owners, free of the magic holding them in place. The sound rushes around you like the dark winds of change. The light in the walls of the room goes dark. The door to the room loses power, and goes black.

Shadow blossoms in your senses from a hundred points at once. Light flares to meet it. They twist together, battling against one another.

The room shakes. The rock cracks. The rumbling rapidly increases in intensity, as does the feeling of magic.

Hundreds of points of darkness. But thousands of flaring lights.

What do you do?

BOOM

Your aura erupts behind you, and you blast out the room, blowing past the two angels. They're thrown up against the walls by the sheer force of your passing.

You're down the way you came in half a second.

You barely pull up in time to stop yourself from slamming headfirst into solid rock.

You flap your way up the stairs, then cruise out the first grate you see.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V5Gi_trjnu4

The city is in complete chaos. Towers that dotted the skyline are gone. Plumes of smoke from tons of fallen rubble cover most of the inner streets, and the shadow mages are using it to their advantage. Most of them are gathering in that area, where it's darker, but the fighting is scatter all over the place. Beams and explosions of light and shadow erupt throughout the air.

You power up again for your supersonic...

Daaaaam.

-------------
-------------

You blow past the angel before he can even start to bring his sword down.

And as you do, you open your maw. Your speed does the rest. You tear a hole straight through him, ripping him in half. The only thing left of him is his sword arm, his feet, and the upper portion of his head. They tumble down to the ground.

>you gain 3 EXP (total: 6)

Behind you, the battle continues. Another explosion downs another tower. The entire city is shrouded in a cloud of white stone dust.

You feel beams of light tear through the clouds from above. Many powerful angels circle the outskirts of the city, bombarding shadowy targets using their senses as a guide. It's rough work - and you know well that Shadow mages aren't always where they appear to be. But they don't hesitate to destroy much of their own city, even with all the people still trapped inside.

It sounds like the sort of thing Sandalphon would command.

The Noiralev rests high up in a dock built into the mountains surrounding the city. You race toward it, reaching the craft in moments. While not in motion, its magical shields aren't active. You punch in through a porthole, scattering glass around you as you roll upright onto the floor.

The halls remind you of the Velarion - steel ribbed with adamantium. Everything looks the same, but you can feel a pulsing core down belowdecks.

You blink in surprise.

The Noiralev's dynamo...is the Shadow element.

This...is promising.

What do you do?

Let's take the Shadow Dynamo, and learn finally how to make more. Let's take the Shadow Dynamo, and use it to empower ourselves WITHOUT CONSUMing it.
>>
>>25351879
Time to take over! The ship might be just what we need to overcome our disadvantage.
>>
If we eat the dynamo, we might want to not go the exp route. Imagine, ECLIPSE with all of these shadow mages...
>>
>>25351879
I'm going to get outposted here, but I still like the steal the TELEPORTING AIRSHIP strategy, although we may not be able to fly it
>>

Also, let's not forget to use our HUNGER shard for this.
>>
>some other strategy
split off a shade and order it to go distract something, use Shadowmeld with the rest of our mana to hide. Then enter the airship with all due haste.
>>

This! We can use isolation to boost the shields. The angels can handle wind whatsit, so this might be the best bet of getting as many shadow mages as possible out alive.

>>

if they are destroying their own city, they wouldn't hesitate to destroy the airship. I'm afraid Eclipse is the only chance those mages have to survive.

it's the angels ship not Vellik's
>>
>>25351990

Consuming the dynamo is shortsighted. Sure it will give us a temporary power boost, but there are much better options available. We should try to hijack the ship, we are going to need to extract all of the newly freed shadow/spirit mages.
>>
>>25351990
oh fuck, Sandalphon is there isn't he?
>>

Straight to engine room, no sense mucking about.

Also, Flint and Auriel should be our top priority.

Eating the dynamo and initiating the eclipse is a HUGE part of the plan. Without that eclipse, the shadow mages don't stand a chance. They'll be crushed to a man.

Instead of consuming it, we could study and learn from it. Another way we could use it is to see if we can't get Steward up and running again, at least a little bit.

I ask though: If we consume the dynamo and cripple the ship how will we get the mages we just saved to safety? We can not carry all of them and there will be those who can not escape.

Will we leave those we just saved to die fighting the angels?
>>
>>25352054

it's like you WANT all the shadow mages to die
>>
>>25352071
How do you plan to get the mages on the big fat airship without having them all slaughtered by Sandles?
>>
>>25352054
Steward was a complex machine of multiple types of elements in fine distribution, as far as our focus could tell. Pretty sure we don't have the needed knowledge to do anything about the damaged husk left over.

>>25352053
This. I want the XP, but buffing the shadow mages will have (hopefully) a greater impact.
>>
>>25352071
The eclipse will let us wreck the angels force to the point that they must call for a tactical retreat.

That gives the shadow mages time to scatter to the winds. Shadow is stealthy. Once the battle is done, they can take care of the rest.

Either way, this is a heavy blow against the angels.
>>

can we even fly an airship to the mages, a ship that requires trained crews to piolet
>>

>>
>>25352102
>That gives the shadow mages time to scatter to the winds. Shadow is stealthy. Once the battle is done, they can take care of the rest.
Shadow mages can't fly or swim, and even if they can, then the angelic navy and Sky-Sever will take care of anyone who tries to escape by those routes.
>>
>>25352071

Do we even know how to pilot an airship? Does the airship still have a jump charge? Can it outfly the angels? Too many variables.

I say we just Eclipse.
>>
>>25352120
Yes, but they can SHADOW away.
>>
>>25352015

See, this is a plan.

Drop them off in Arland.

For fucks sake, do not take them near Fang.
>>
>>25352089

I will never say this again, tsun tsun, but you have a sensible and strategically sound opinion.

Extraction of the shadow slaves just simply isn't possible at this option. Maybe had we conquered the Ring City threads upon threads from now, we could have successfully freed whatever fragment of Shadow Mages remained.

Instead, we offered them a chance at justice, and they took it.
>>

>>
Guys, if we get that 100 xp, we can just buy eclipse. Sure it won't be INFINITE MANA mode, but at least we'll have all those new abilities.
>>
>>25352120
Most of them can probably use blink.
>>
>>25352140
What is SHADOWing away? How the hell are they supposed to get off an island full of people who hate them and want to kill them? We have the only way for them to escape. If best comes to best, then Vellik can hire people to pilot it, with help from Auriel, Ila, and the other shadow mages.

How big can we become if we stretch?

This is kind of important because it limits how many people we can carry and what we can replicate.

It's a shop. I can tell because of the pixels and I've seen many shops in my time

------------
------------

You sprint through down the halls, circling in on the engine room. You sense more than one scurrying soul rushing through the halls - you work carefully to avoid them. The control room of the ship feels like a hive of activity.

Halfway to the engines, the ship roars. You stumble to keep your balance as it lifts into the air and begins to turn toward the city.

You doubt the shadow mages will last long if the airship begins a full-scale bombardment.

You reach the engine room. It's seemingly empty. The machinery twists and turns. The magical pressure of the Shadow element is heavy, but you slip along the railed walkway it as if it's not even there. It's a refreshing change from the other ships you've been in.

Auriel and Flint are standing in the center of the engine room. Your wisp zips out from behind Flint and circles your head.

<...Sir Flint! Auriel!> You rush over to them. <What are you doing here?>

"I told you he'd come here," Flint says.

"...good call," Auriel says. "Shadow...Flint...got here last night. We..."

"We found the body," Flint says. "We found Jessica Mordeaux. We investigated her past, found what was left of her family. It...was as you said."

"What the hell is going on down there?" Auriel asks. "Flint seemed bent on the fact you'd try to get here if you escaped. We've been waiting the whole day."

<Why didn't you come to help me?>

"...who would believe us?" Flint asked. "I'm sorry, Shadow...but if we betrayed sympathy...it wouldn't look good. Auriel figured that Michael would put it together.

<I see. Consider the matter settled.> You glance at Auriel. <As for what's happening, I broke into the soul vault and destroyed the magic holding the Shadows mages captive.>

>>
>>25352255
SM stated that strength no longer limited how many people we can carry. Now size is the only limiting factor. There are many many many different kinds of buses. Some only carry 20 people, others 80 or more. Depending on whether we grow (which I think we do because we couldn't have done many things had we stayed man-sized) future planning will change as well.

<I judged that I had to free them.>

"Thousands of people are going to die!"

<So be it.>

"How can you stand there and say that?" she asks. "I thought better of you."

<You thought better of me?> you say. <I think better of you! I had to free them. It was the right thing to do. If some angels die - then that is your penance.>

Auriel shakes her head. "You...I can't trust you. I was foolish to...this - "

<Michael's spell, that enslaved the mages,> you say. <Michael, who was cursed by Legion.>

"You know of Legion?" Auriel says sharply.

<Legion, who corrupted his mind,> you continue, ignoring the question. <It was wrong. Will innocents die? Surely, they will. But this had to end. And I judged that I was the one to end it.> You point at the core of the engine. <I aim to eat that dynamo, and lead the mages from this place.>

Auriel shakes her head. "...I...I can't let you. You're - "

"AURIEL!" Flint shouts.

She blinks, then looks at him. "...Donovan?"

"For the sake of the elements, woman." He grabs her and hugs her to his form. "...I don't know what happened to you...I don't understand it. But for the sake of all that's good in this world...let it go. I care about you too much to let you keep making that mistake. You're smarter - you're better than that."

Auriel's arms wrap up around Flint's back. His fingers clench tight. "...I can't."

"You can, dammit. If the Shadow...if it uses that power it used before, it can get the mages out of the city. That'll end the fighting. And from there...we can figure this out."

the shadow mages are the only people who sacrifice for us. the closest anyone else has come is a promise of help in the future.

but no every shadow mage we have met has gone above and beyond the call of duty to help us. Ila put herself through torture to try and do anything she could to help us. Adivan did the same. but everyone of the higher elements? their problems need to be solved first.
"ohh yeah we can help you, but first you need to help us kill this demon that is hurting these people you dont even know"
so far everyone we have met of the lesser elements has been selfless as they can be. some needed to be talked down (adivan) but they all came around to be great people. not so with people of the higher elements

We activate the eclipse, and then impress upon the mages to escape. It will minimise the loss of life.

JUSTICE.
it makes sense. we are not blind justice. that is why we are special. we have to be able to both understand the judged, and still be able to judge them unworthy

Justice has even invaded our speech, like eating with Daraxis, and alone with isolation

I rolled this 100.

I rolled it for you, /tg/. I love you.

>mfw I do right by my Quest.
>>
>>25352786
no. darkness is refusing to cover the sins any longer. we are refusing these angels the comforting dark of night. they cannot use darkness to cover themselves any longer. we will not allow it
>>
>>25352810
That's what I'll suggest at least. You know the hunger shard? It'd be a good way to use it.
>>
>>25352760
You know, I'd never noticed the winged halo on the Man's cigarette until now.
>>
>>25352786

But that metaphor doesn't make any sense.

The irony is that the "light" has hidden their sins under denial and complacency and hypocrisy. Even though we are shadow, we are forcing them to see themselves clearly, reflected in the eyes of those they have oppressed for so long.

>>
>>25352793
It's sort of true, actually. When we don't have Flint, Abigal, Auriel and heck, even Joey around, we seem to revert to a cold, calculating judgement, rather than justice.

Like, an hour ago we were willing to destroy thousands of more or less innocent lives just to hurt Sandalphon. That isn't justice at all.

Eclipse costs 20 mana (or half, whatever's bigger).

Meaning that unless we get another magic power, we can't use any after casting eclipse. And even if we do get another magic power level, we'll only have enough mana for one or two void rings.

Dynamo eclipse mode is far superior.

"Stop!" Auriel shouts.

Tyrael hesitates. "...captain?"

"...stop. Don't...hurt...Shadow."

Flint's smile splits his face wide.

"...I don't understand," Tyrael says. "What..." His face lights up in realization. "...it's controlling your minds." He steels himself. "I won't fail you, Captain!"

Auriel steps forward. "Isht nule'fth takath nevost fevag'ah, Tyrael."

Even your gift of tongues cannot translate her words. They're lined in Light.

Tyrael stops. "...vass'ad. Dovan."

"Shadow is not our enemy. Not this day," Auriel says.

"...I...would never have dreamed to hear those words from your lips, Auriel."

Auriel walks up to him briskly. "Are you my Lieutenant, Tyrael?"

Tyrael salutes. "Always."

"Then follow me." Auriel storms out to the door of the engine room. "I'm taking your command of this ship."

"Understood, Captain."

"Shadow!" Auriel shouts.

<Yes...captain?>

Auriel turns to look at you. For a moment, you think she's going to call you out - but then she simply nods. "Don't eat the damn dynamo." She puts a finger to her chin. "...see what you can do with it."

Flint swallows. "Are you just going to walk into the control room?"

"Of course I am," Auriel says. "I'm the highest ranking angel on this ship. Isn't that right, Lieutenant?"

"Yes ma'am."

"Exactly what I wanted to hear. Donovan, you stay here. You know engineering?"

Flint scratches his head. "...I mean...I spent a few months on my father's airships. I can read the meters."

"Alright. I'll patch you in from the control room when I get there." She moves to leave. Tyrael throws you one last, odd look, then follows.

What do you do?

>fall in with Auriel in the control room
>stick with Flint in the engine room
>some other strategy
>>

I all came down to one thing.

I introduced Abigail as the first 'real' NPC on purpose. It was so that you would make a choice.

If you let her die, it would have been easy to make it "RISE TO EVIL POWER" quest.

But you saved her, and so I knew it was "learn the nature of humanity and do justice" quest.

That, and Adavan surviving at the end of the your journey through the Old Forest Keep have been the two largest determining factors about the direction of the quest.

Maybe we can draw from it like a mana pool? If so, we can Eclipse anyways AND have a ship to evac the shadow mages on.

Maybe we can fuse with the core and control the ship as if it were our own body? Make it travel supersonic, etc.

<Auriel.>

The angel stops for a moment.

<Thank you.>

She doesn't respond, but continues on out of the room.

You turn to Flint.

"So," he says. "How's it going?"

<...I've been better. But I don't think I'll ever have a better friend than you.>

"...Shadow...what's happening right now...it's going to change things," he says. "You have to be careful."

<I might not have time to be careful, Sir Flint.>

"Always with Sir Flint," he mutters. "Just call me Donovan already."

<As you wish, Donovan.>

He makes a face. "When you say it like that, it barely makes a difference."

<Do you wish to know what happened?>

Flint pauses for a moment, then nods. "Tell me everything."

So you do. You send him impressions of everything that happened.

At the end of it, Flint's sitting on the floor, breathing hard. "...holy shit. That was one fucked up maniac you ate."

<Where is Abigail, and Obis?>

"Abigail is with Fang. In Archon, I'd presume," he says. "Obis mentioned that he wanted to find that Blackwater person. He said he was headed for Port Vanta. That was a week ago, though, now."

The airship begins to turn. You both shift slightly as the momentum changes.

"Attention, crew of the Noiralev!" Auriel's voice comes in crackly over the loudspeakers. "This is Auriel Lightchosen, Fifth Highest. I'm now the commanding officer on this ship. And if you chose to remain, you - along with myself, and Lieutenant Tyrael - are now traitors to the order of the Most High."

You and Flint both look at each other, then back to the speaker.

"For some hundred years, I have begun to doubt," Auriel says. "I have heard the whispers. In public, I denied them. In my heart...in my heart, they have grown. Silently, and in great uncertainty. But they are there, and I believe this is the day on which they have been realized.

"When the Ring City was founded - when I helped found it - I rejoiced, for I believed we had brought from the ashes of the Great War the new seed of civilization. When the elections for the first ruling council of Heavensgate were held, I was there to shake the hands of the men who wanted to build a new home for their people. With great hope, I believed something new would come from this. Some great. We would have peace.

"When Sandalphon appointed himself leader of the council - some hundred years later - I said nothing, for we faced great danger from Archon.

"When Sandalphon authorized the enslavement of Shadow mages, I said nothing, because I believed it was necessary to maintain peace.

"When we established full military rule over the Empire to fight the 60 Years War, I said nothing, because I believed it was necessary. And I said nothing when Sandalphon extended that dictatorship indefinitely, because we then faced the Black Lady.

"How is it, that what began in such hope, ended in constant, unending war? The common denominator is not our enemies. They have changed. No. The common thread throughout all of this, has been us.

"Long have I meditated on this subject, and I realize that the reason I stayed silent was for the same reason we all stayed silent: because I was a coward. Because I was afraid of being labeled a sympathizer. Because I was afraid to believe that those of the lesser elements could be good, could be pure, because of what they had done to me. Because I was afraid that peace would make me, in all my strength, irrelevant, and that I would live out my days as an artifact of lessons learned.

SM i can only say this. you are a gentelman and a scholar. you are a wonderful person. I have been with this quest since thread 5. never missed a thread. and it has always been an interesting time. i was legitimately conflicted with Xella. i was overjoyed when we found Abigail again. i was furious when i saw her in a cage. i wanted to hurt magcock in any way we could. this is the only thing i have read that can get me involved so deeply, so reliably. if i could i would buy absolutly anything you publish. even if it was something stupid like a pamphlet on glitter. i almost feel like i owe you money for continuing to provide me with this wonderful story.

i just want you to know that before we roll our next one and i hate you again. but that will pass.
>>
>>25353590

No, he is on his own side. We can be sure that he is looking only after himself and his plans. And that little deal he made with Lucifer about slaving other mages doesn't sit well with me, we did not liberated everyone here just to turn a blind eye on the duke if he does the same.

"The time to speak has come and gone. But today, I hope to make up for my own cowardice.

"Look out the windows. See our own city be destroyed by our own forces because Sandalphon cannot tolerate the idea that the Shadow might be free.

"But I tell you this: if we never give them a second chance, then we don't deserve one ourselves. This is what I have come to believe. I refuse to abide by laws that have grown stale and corrupt with mindless repetition. Today, I do what I believe is right.

"The Noiralev turns onto the Ring City. We are going to extract as many shadow mages as we can, and then we are going to run. And from there - we forge our own path. If that doesn't sound like something you're interested in, then get the hell off my ship. No hard feelings.

"Full speed toward the city. Raise the main front shields! Half power to the side cannons, one quarter top and bottom! Move it!"

The voice cuts out.

"...I think I might be in love," Flint says. He looks at you. "Told you she'd come around."

<...good call.>

The speaker next to you both crackles. "Hey, you two! What's it look like down there?"

"Uh...uh...uh..." Flint darts around the room. "...everything looks fine! Power readings good!"

"Shadow, do something useful and get on that damn dynamo. Give it some juice or something!"

<How?>

"I don't know! Do Shadowy stuff!"

"Of course, Lucifer," Vellik says smoothly. "As long as your support is guaranteed against Kan-Abar."

"The faster you help us repair the Velarion, the faster it will be under your command, for the duration of the war," Lucifer says. "Come. There's plenty more to see."

There's a leveling up occurring in the background. It is relatively minor.

It's your damage with an average success. You just beat the DC and are fighting an enemy on flat, open ground with no situational modifiers or resistance changes - then you'd do the base damage.

You're more powerful than I thought you'd be. Also, the story is proceeding more rapidly than I thought it would. I thought you'd do more of your own thing first before major world events started turning...but the fact that you got captured kickstarted that, big time.

Shadow Servant
>Neutralize fire, wind, light, lightning
>synergy with shadow, spirit, water earth
>>
>>25353812
Agreed. After Flint's parasite and freeing Kan-Abar, that comes next.
>>
>>25353801
But he wasn't neutral. He was making a pretty clear alliance with Lucifer there.

And a man as smart as Vellik will operate under the assumption that we know about that, and that this has therefore become his worst case scenario.
>>
Hey SM, what would happen if we tried to Servant someone who had previously been Servanted? If it's opposing, would it annihilate it, and if it's one of the same (spirit and shadow, etc.), would it complement it?
>>
Quick note on unlocking Darkness Within. Shadowrage would seem far more likely to unlock it than those resistances.
>>
>>25353845
Yeah, I kind of wanted to fuck around and get bitches before this started happening.
Not to say that this was a bad turn of events, just... different.
>>
>>25353845
Another question. Throughout this process, how have you felt emotionally towards this quest and the players you run this for? How rewarding has it been for you?
>>
Does a subject have to be willing to be infused with shadow servant?
>>
>>25353845
How big is shadow? How much has it grown? What are (roughly) the upper and lower limits without using compression?
>>
>>25353851
He already had an alliance with him, though. And when he did that, he tried to ally us against the light. They already had an alliance, so he could just be playing the part, only to kill Lucy later.
The Duke is a smart man, and it would be wise for him to join our side.
>>
>>25353840

Its his brother for Christ sakes. Think about when the parasite kicked in.
>>
>>25353822
Well it was another anon you responded to, but yeah, Raziel was pretty weak all things told. And he was under Auriel's command, so I'd say he was roughly at Tyr's power level. Also, I'm not sure if Auri was just weak for her position or I am over estimating angels in general give how early we met her and avoided getting killed.
>>
>all this talk to empower Auriel

/tg/'s favor is easily won. I doubt she'd be interested though. She had to have a dead body shoved in her face to accept that the Light was doing the wrong thing. And the Shadow treated her extremely harshly.

Do we start our own place in the local Underdark, or should we try to find an established place that will take them in?
>>
SKY PIRATES! ASSEMBLE!

We besiege the Ring City, and take it for ourselves.
A fitting start for the new, true shadow empire.

>Hey SM, what would happen if we tried to Servant someone who had previously been Servanted? If it's opposing, would it annihilate it, and if it's one of the same (spirit and shadow, etc.), would it complement it?

You'll have to find out the old fashioned way.

Thread is archived. See twitter for updates. Thread tomorrow night, hopefully a bit earlier on. Either way, I wont' run it late because I have work Tuesday very early.

>>25353882

No.

>>25353881

>how have you felt emotionally towards this quest and the players you run this for?

I love the quest. I've heard of authors that dislike stories they've written, but I love all my stories. It's great fun. It's tough to go at breakneck pace, but breaks here and there keep it fresh anyway.

As for the players, well, /tg/ is a roller coaster. You guys are some of the genre-savviest people on the internet, but at the same time, you can be totally naive about random things. It's hard to judge how much I can hint without being totally obvious.

When we dissolved into waifuing arguments, it's mixed feelings of frustration and hilarity. Obviously I've put work into this quest, and I think that shows. But I still don't take it as seriously as all that. Overall, though, it's never gotten all THAT bad. I just keep writing and let the arguments circle around the posts as they will.

The only time I've been really disappointed was when everyone got huffy because things weren't going your way. I mean, sure, it was a potentially deadly situation, but less energy whining and more energy thinking about how to get out of it, right? More frustrating than that was when people directed the frustration at me.

>How rewarding has it been for you?

Very. The quest has blossomed far beyond what I expected...which is usually what happens when I write, which is part of why I like writing. It's also given me ideas for other stories, and other quests.
>>
Something I wondered about Auriel. Despite being empowered by the light and most likely neglecting training she can do spirit spells. What if her soul is actually mostly spirit aligned and she just became an light Angel because of her belief?
>>
>>25353845
So I got a question about Twisting Gloom, in the ability description it says our aura moves with a will of it's own. Could we perhaps, slave our aura to the true darkness shards and use their personalities to dictate protocols our aura will follow in battle?

For instance: hunger shard would have our aura grapple people and incapacitate them for easier consumes, isolation shard would push enemies away and set up for ranged attacks, etc...
>>
>>25353911
>he was under Auriel's command
No, he was her commander, and more powerful than she was.
>>
>>25353956
Either way, you're telling a fantastic story here.

I love these goddamn characters, man. All of 'em. Even the dicks.
>>

The discouraging part was that you were giving us an option that we hated, an option that when voted for you would respond with something like "that won't work" and then responded similarly to everything we did think up.

That is frustrating.
>>
>>25353900

You're about a yard/meter spherically, normally. Easily morph into a humanoid. You can't really get smaller without compression.

Upper limit...meh. Three meters or so spherically?

Of course, with your physical upgrades, you're extremely heavy and dense. Your mass has been increased much more than your size.
>>
>>25353934
Besides the fact that we can't win this fight, we don't WANT Ring City to fall. Not completely.

Those crazy shadow cultists sound legitimately like bad news and the angels help keep them in check. This is a good thing. We've made enough rash decisions for now. We should retreat and reevaluate matters.
>>
>>25353956
Yeeeah, things got pretty crazy back a few threads ago. We shoulda trusted your sense of story telling.

I completely agree. There have been AT LEAST four ways to handle the situation. Two of those you pretty much rubbed our nose in. Just because we misinterpreted one option you gave us doesn't mean it's your fault in any way. It is the players duty to think of good actions, the QM is only a fall-back if players can't think of anything.

>Pretend to be a Shadow Mage
>Buy compress and hide your aura within that of the lich
>Flee
>Pretend to be a summon

Is there an ability/could we expand our body large enough to blot out the sun?

I want to rise from the ruins and blot out the sun. Because that's just the ICONIC "you're fucked" moment.

That is very good to know, even if I had hoped we would have grown bigger. I want to pretend we are a bus or a dragon one of these days.

I'm curious if Ila (LLA? iLa?) is going to make it out of this. On one hand, the misinformation was a tactically smart move. On the other hand, in this much chaos we probably could've gotten away with damn near anything.

Definitely want to see her character developed, now that she's free.

And I feel like I need to apologize for that. I admit that I was feeling frustrated and that I was considering dropping the quest because of that. Hell, I woke up the very next morning pissed and angry. I am sorry that I had assumed you would have made the quest into something I wouldn't have wanted to play. I should have put more faith in you.

>>
>Surprised this hasn't already reached 40+ upvotes on suptg

I'd rather (s)he not actually. It would bring in too many expectations on a fledgling quest, better that it take off on its own merits. That it find it's own voice.
>>
>>25354032
Wouldn't work, Abigail would have been caught, either gets all our friends killed or if earlier we were lead to rationally belief Yi would have killed all our friends, we did that and it did end up turning out okay I guess.

What was the major problem is that when we were talking to Yi and we didn't just go with what he wanted, Shadow Master said something along the lines of "This is what you get for not bowing down to him". That's why the playerbase fell in line and went completely with what he suggested, they were too afraid to deviate.
>>
>>25354086

There are 4 or 5 people that are constantly down vote quest thread the moment they appear. Its a really shiting thing do.
>>

Most of the voters I think are lurkers that read the archives afterwards.
>>
>>25354016
I'd love to see them get kicked out. Could only increase the quality.
>>
>>25354016

I dunno.

I know what you mean about circlejerks, but would it accomplish anything useful in the long run? What are your thoughts on the subject?

Personally, I don't mind people that want to identify themselves with a thread of argument. Seems rather appropriate for a quest thread.

>>25354040

Look, I'm not trying to bait people for apologies, and I totally understand frustration. It sucks to lose. That's pretty human. You don't have anything to be sorry for, so don't be.

What bothered me is how everyone immediately turned on me. I mean, it's like people said. -30 threads in, good story, people having a good time. Then there's one bad shitshow and "WAAAH FUCK YOU SM". It was really surprising, in a bad way.

I mean...are we elegan/tg/entlemen or not?

Flint and Auriel are naturally of the light element, so it would hinder them, if anything. We should still let them know that the feelings are there, however.
As for the others, we should do them in this order:
1. Abigail, so she can defend herself. She's the niece of Fang, she's already wrapped up in this war as a major player. The sooner she can start throwing her own punches, the better.
2. Joey. The guy wants to be stronger, I say we make him more than the guy everyone says should be the sacrificial lamb. Plus, a shadow squire to a light knight? Iiiiiii-rony.
3. Adavan. Dude's been a bro to put up with our request, I say we throw him a bone (no pun intended).
4. Ila. She's strong and fast already, let's make her even better.
And of course,
5. WISPBRO
and
6. SEWERBRO
>>
>>25354272
Abigail is already so completely overpowered. She's already raised zombies with nearly zero training.

Second.
>>
>>25354272
Auriel also has Spirit and our Shadowy gift may or may not be stronger than her natural light.

It would certainly have better synergy, at least.

As for Flint, such a large change to the structure of his soul may just dislodge the parasite without having to involve some other dick.
>>
Sewerbro is such a bro.

"Nothing to see here. Just a mouse"

<Yes. Only a mouse.>

"Well I guess I don't need to do anything. As you will."
>>
>>25354300
We still need to attempt our antimagic on that thing, the demon lords' magic had a temporary effect so I'd like to know if we could come close.
>>
>>25354329
Maybe something related to summoning, too; we learned that it's similar to a succubus in it's suckling regards so that may be a thing.
>>
We should really deep focus on Auriel's soul when we have the chance and check for the presence of LEGION.
>>

>I dunno. Maybe it'll be a test of skill if I don't say anything.
noooo, you gotta tell us. I don't follow other quests, SM. I love shadow quest, but the only reason I even looked at it in the first place was because you had a cool chart.
