You crouch on the floor, the cult leader pinned beneath your shield. Adrenaline is surging through you, fueled by a burning fury springing from deep within, a fire that, if it's not kept carefully in check, could very well consume you. You can feel it straining to break free, as though it were a wholly separate entity rather than mere emotion.

As the masked man struggles beneath you, an overwhelming aroma fills your nostrils: the metallic scent of blood. Blood, trickling down the altar mere inches from your face. Blood, dripping from the stab wound in your gut. Blood, rotting in the bottoms of the channels carved into the dais.

A slight shudder ripples through your body as something is released deep within your psyche, like a wild beast breaking free of its chain.

Suddenly, the world shifts to a new spectrum of clarity. The chaotic clamor of the melee raging on the other side of the altar becomes clear, every sound easily distinguished from the rest. Your foe's struggling seems to slow to a crawl, every slightest twitch plainly visible and easily countered. It's as if a veil was torn away in the blink of an eye, rendering a new clarity.

And the scent of blood is no exception.

((Shall we partake?))

With unnatural speed, you drive your sword forward, seeking to thrust it up under the cult leader's chin.

((Come, dear fellow, let us see what your vintage is like.))

Silver flames spring forth in the blink of an eye, deflecting your stab. Your blade runs across the man's face, making a shallow cut across his jaw and chipping the mask.
Blood trickles out. Its aroma holds a hint of foulness, an acrid suggestion of brimstone.

((Well, this is interesting!))

The flames cover the man's face entirely, and suddenly he is gone.

((Leaving so soon? Come, show me more!))

You spring to your feet, whirling about just in time to intercept a gout of silver flame with your shield.

((Well, I suppose a prize hard-won does taste all the sweeter...))

The cult leader is now fully wreathed in translucent silver, licking over his form.

((So, I play the miner today, do I?))

You lunge forward, bringing your sword to bear.

((This coat of gray, I'll chip away...))

Another bolt of flame shoots out from the cult leader's outstretched palm, splashing harmlessly against your shield.

((...the crimson gem inside to see.))

You swing your blade, a lightning-fast downward cut.

((Dear pick, strike home, remove the stone...))

Flames curl around your sword, slowing its path, but it breaks through nonetheless, carving a sizable gash across the leader's chest.

((...and precious rubies render free!))

The cult leader staggers back, bleeding substantially.

((Ah, marvelous! Simply sublime!))

You press forward, shoving him with your shield, but with a flaring of silver he resists your assault.

((O-ho! Well, aren't you an interesting one!))

In the blink of an eye, you follow up your shield bash with a deft leg sweep, sending the cult leader toppling to the floor.

((Tell me, mountain, how deep do your lodes run?))

Dropping to one knee to follow him, you plant your sword deep into his shoulder.

((How many sparkling rubies do you hold?))

Wrenching your blade free, you raise it for another blow.

((How many ingots of red gold will you yield?))

You bring your sword down, shattering the man's mask and carving deep into his face.

((I want to see it!))

You cut down again, making another gash across his face crosswise to the first.

((I want to taste it!))

Another cut, striking across the neck. A great spurt of blood gushes forth, spattering across your face.

((Yes! Give it all to me! The full extent of your treasure!))

Again and again, you rain blow after blow with your sword. His feeble struggling ceases after the first or second strike, but you continue until the man's face is lacerated beyond all recognition, a flayed mess of chopped meat and fractured bone, glistening with crimson wetness

((Oh. Is that all? Alas, I was expecting more.))

As you rise to your feet, something catches your eye in the shadows by the stairs leading up to the surface: A pair of shining yellow orbs, low to the ground.

>cont
>>
>>25308156
The orbs move, and a shape emerges into view, melting out of the shadows as though formed from them. Small, furry, with a long tail.

A black cat. Or so it would seem. You aren't fooled, though. The shadow it casts is unusually large, and has the shape of a humanoid with skeletal wings. And even from this distance, you can smell its blood -- foul, noxious, the scent of acid and sulfur and decay.

{{Alas, dear brother, I was rather fond of that pawn...but I suppose I shall leave you to your fun with your own.}}

As the cat slinks away, bounding nimbly up the stairs, you hear a great cracking sound of shattering stone, followed by bellows of rage. Turning to face the archway you came in by, you see two hulking figures barrel into view.

((Come, let us dance!))

Ducking under a swinging claw, you angle a slash at the brute's belly.

((What scarlet riches will you show unto me?))

Your blade strikes true, bringing forth a gout of foul, dark ichor.

((Putrid! Vile! No, this will not do!))

Furious, you bring your sword back for another blow, striking deep.

((Accursed, tainted thing! Begone from my sight!))

The beast lashes out with a claw, which you narrowly manage to deflect with your shield.

((A big fellow like you is hard to hit properly...)

You swing again, cutting into the side of the creature's knee. It roars, and staggers a bit.

((...but I imagine I can still finish you quickly enough.))

Shifting to take advantage of the brute's momentary instability, you thrust your sword ceilingward, plunging it deep into the creature's viscera. As your blade pierces the heart, a gout of rancid ichor pours out to drench your front, causing you to retch.

((Ugh! Disgusting, wretched creature!))

As the big enemy falls, the second creature approaches from your left, bellowing with rage. It makes to grab you with one of its oversized claws.

((Perhaps you'll be more interesting than the other?))

You duck under the advancing claw just in time, pulling your sword free as you do so. Moving to step around to the side of the second large enemy, you cut at its ankle, drawing more of the same black, rotten ichor.

((Alas, the same. No, I think I've had enough.))

Turning about, you run toward the melee back on the dais. One form lays motionless, its black robes charred by lightning but relatively unstained by blood.

((Such wastefulness! What cretin would use such inelegant methods?))

You come to the closest target, one in dark robes. It is presently engaging another, clad nearly as your target's chromatic opposite. Your blade pierces the foe's unguarded back easily, emerging from the other side dripping red.

((Yes! Cleanse the foul grime with treasure pure!))

((Ah, so much sweet nectar here!))

Two of the remaining black-clad ones shift their focus to you, advancing with daggers glinting with argent light.

((It has been long indeed since I last drank so deep!))

The two are no match for you, falling under your blade like so much grass.

Reaching around from behind, the foe wraps its arms around you in some sort of grappling hold. It's not much of a hold -- both arms are wrapped around your neck, but with neither the proper configuration nor the tightness to choke. And it doesn't restrict the limbs at all. Ordinarily you could break free easily, but with your legs and sword arm bound to the floor with stone...

At last, the dark presence departs from your mind, driven away by effort of will...aided, no doubt, by the help of the gods, to say nothing of your own personal party of goddesses here.

Taking deep breaths to calm yourself, you look up at the girls. Yukiho is shrinking away, clutching her shovel to her tightly. Ami and Mami are at either side of you, daggers out, looking very uneasy. Miki stands directly ahead, poleaxe leveled at you. Her expression is...remarkably resolute, actually. Though certainly troubled.

Haruka...you can't see her, but you can feel her weight on your back, the pressure of her arms clutching you tightly. A faint hint of her scent -- honey, and baking bread. A bit of wetness on the back of your neck where her tears have trickled past the edge of your helmet.

"Well, I guess I'll start at the very beginning. My father was...not a very good man. In fact, he was a cultist, not unlike these guys we just fought. He kept it secret from the family for awhile, but it still affected us. You don't live with a witch without winding up a little bit tainted just by association. Even if you only live with that witch for a few years before he gets killed by adventurers. And it doesn't help when the witch is including members of his own family in demonic pacts.

Anyway, I wound up stuck with a curse of possession. Sometimes, I just, well, lose myself. Something else takes over. A demon, I guess. It doesn't happen nearly as much anymore -- actually, this was the first time it's happened in years -- but when I was younger it was...disturbingly frequent. Practically any time I'd get the least bit angry, the demon would take over. And when the demon takes over...well, you saw what I was like just now.
I've hurt a lot of people. Even killed people. Innocent people. I...I killed my own mother, in one of those episodes. Would've killed my little sister, too, if a neighbor hadn't heard the noise and put a stop to it. Even then, as a little kid, it took two full-grown men to restrain me, and I hurt them pretty bad in the process.

I guess the Arbiter takes a liking to me though, or else one of the other gods does and has his ear, because I got off pretty easy for it.

>cont

>>25311838
"Normally the tainted are lucky to get exiled to some distant wasteland, but me, I just ended up living in monasteries for awhile. Not too much different from any other orphan, I guess, except instead of being put up with temples and monasteries of the Matron, I got passed around between a few different ones. The Arbiter's, to start with, then once they got a better idea of what was triggering the possessions they started sending me to Sister Flame's and the Hero's so I could learn to control it.
And it worked, for the most part. I had some rough patches early in my adventuring career, had to restart in new places a few times to get away from bad reputations, but like I said, it's been years since the last time this happened. I thought I'd beaten it for good, but I guess the circumstances here, between the demonic influence and all the blood and everything, made it easier for the demon to break through.

And...and then I tried to kill you. I'm sorry. I'm so, so sorry."

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Basically, P is a berserker. He can enter a battle frenzy to significantly boost his combat capabilities. This means massive stat boosts -- it'll be virtually impossible to fail most combat rolls, and the upper limit of what would be considered reasonable will be significantly raised. In this state, P is indisputably stronger in combat than anyone else in the cast, bar none.

This battle frenzy is NOT the same as the possession stuff that went down in this thread. However, possession is an ever-present risk while in the battle frenzy. Not an especially likely risk, mind -- contrary to what this session and a few other points of this cavern arc might suggest, I'm really not intending to make this quest super grimdark. The whole possession thing is just one of those things that spiraled out of another, more innocuous detail that took on something of a life of its own. P's possession issues are intended to be more of a background element -- his history will come back to haunt him, and the risk of possession is always there as a drawback to discourage abuse of the berserk mode, but that's about the extent of it. And I should note that future possession episodes will generally be more of a fade-to-black deal; the detail today was just a special instance to really drive home what sort of shit P has to deal with.

TL;DR -- P can barbarian rage and usally stay in control, but there is a small risk of going all BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD. Which is bad. Use at your own risk.
>>
>>25312241
So its Devil Trigger?

>>

>>25312287
Nope. It's just a matter of how much you're willing to risk the chance of flying off the handle. Also, the wear and tear to yourself -- extended berserking will wear you down in the long term.
>>

Berserk mode is pretty much entirely in your hands. Strictly speaking, there needs to be some sort of plausible reason for P to get a good rightous fury going, but in practice that should generally be trivial to orchestrate in a combat situation with the idols about. Triggering berserk mode is basically a little snippet of narrative control on the player side of things -- it's not so much that P himself makes a conscious decision to use it, but rather you as players can dictate that circumstances somehow conspire to get P's blood a-boiling.

As for possession, there are some things that will exacerbate it. The presence of blood being a big one. As you may have noticed, the demon has a bit of a "thing" for blood. Other demonic activity in the area will also make it more likely to happen. And generally speaking, anything that could be expected to loosen/weaken conscious resolve (eg, pain, fatigue, starvation, etc) will make P more likely to slip. Possession won't happen unless you're already in berserk mode, but the same situations that make you more likely to slip from berserk to possession might also pose a risk of unintentionally entering berserk mode (which will then introduce a risk of slipping further to full possession).

>>
>>25312682
Well, to be fair, this episode was pretty much the perfect storm of shit that could make P slip up. He isn't lying when he says he's been clean for years; standard adventuring fare shouldn't be much of an issue. It's just that between the stress of his old guild disbanding, having to adjust to a new city, and suddenly stumbling right into a demonic blood sacrifice ritual at its climax after spending over 24 hours in caverns permeated with demonic taint...all of that together, that'll be a problem.

And the multiple blows to the head yesterday probably didn't help. I kid, I kid.

If you mean the roll for >>25309883, yes, at least one of the girls definitely would've gotten hurt. The first roll there was for P to get ahold of himself on his own (which failed); the second was for the girls to restrain you/defend themselves (which succeeded marvelously).
For >>25310513, any failing roll short of a 20 would've resulted in P being knocked out. You were pretty much at their mercy there, but they're still not going to straight-up kill you that quickly.
With a 20, though, that would've ended with somebody getting hurt.

>>25312874
If you think it might help, you're certainly welcome to try. I can't say whether/how well it would work for any particular individual, though.

>>25312958
Well, the creepy voice itself grew out of the berserking. I first decided I wanted P to be a berserker sort, because I wanted to give him a bit more identity combat style-wise beyond just "dude with sword and board", and I feel like you don't see enough "civilized" berserkers. And when I'd decided that, I recalled the one berserker guy in Record of Lodoss War whose berserking is due to possession by an evil spirit, and considering how well that concept fit with the cosmology I already had in mind for the setting and the ample opportunities it would provide for drama and conflict, I couldn't resist. From there, the details of the possession and the backstory related to it sort of sprang up on their own.
