While sometimes her duties- both as an Imperial princess and Imperial Navy officer call her off where you can't tag along, that's not real common. The base hasn't changed much since you first arrived, though some of the AA guns have been removed, and others replaced by towed units. Soviet and Chinese overflights of the islands proper have stopped for the most part, though some of the southern cities and Okinawa still have to deal with the occasional raid. But the days of scrambling off the runway to deal with incoming, at least here, are over.

Well, for the most part. The base is honestly pretty boring, and too far back to be keeping witches. At least, that's what the Major says, while Rand, when she'll talk to you, says it's fucking dumber than the shit they pulled in Alaska. Katsumi hasn't really commented, but you think she's been pushing to get the squadron out to sea, where you're a lot closer to the front- and a lot more useful.

And it's a lot less boring.

“So, Jessica.” Katsumi says, and you can't help but notice you're making your way to the hangars. “Feel like going for a flight? We’ll have to stay in the area, but the Major won't mind as long as we're close to home plate here.”

Gameplay overshadowed by a terrible OST, lack of customizable vehicles hindered what could have been the next AC-2. Levels were also repetitive and the lack of a Eila path hurt what could have been an enjoyable experience.

On a personal note: The removal of the japanese dubs would have allowed for more content on the disk, but not everyone is a purist like myself.

As much as you make fun of Frank, you understand why he loves flying so much. You're willing to bet he'd love it a lot more if he flew like you did, without being encased in that steel and glass prison. It's stupid. Pilots talk of freedom and power, but they can't hear and see the same as you can, covered by the canopy like they are. They're reliant on radar and the eyes of other people to cover their blind spots.

You, you have a full, unrestricted sphere of vision around you, no metal to block your line of sight. Plus you can hear a lot better, even if you have to be careful about relying on sound- it can get a bit distorted by supersonic aircraft and missiles.

It's one of those arguments that swings way above your head. Some people say witches are better in that regard, others say that radar was just the precursor to you being totally outclassed by fighters, and once they can get the survivability down, witches will be a thing of the past. You don't really believe that- there's always going to be witches- but to hear Kat talk about Frank and how he can fly a fighter, or the twins, whoever they are, you're wondering if there might not be pilots that can match them.

Inside the hangar, you stop by your locker, pulling out your HUD and wrist MFD. The HUD isn't too bad, though a lot of the time you think it's pretty useless- You'd rather do without, honestly, and just use a good rifle optic and a skydiving altimeter, but squadron SOP is to wear the HUD. The wrist MFD is really great though, and you're glad you have it. Map function is your best friend.

Your strikers sit in their rack, along with your weapon of choice. It took some doing, but you turned up your dad's M-14, the one he went through the jungle with. You got lucky it was still in a depot armory for some reserve unit. It's since been restored and blueprinted, and you've been working with your armory team on it, trying to learn it down to the tiniest detail. You haven't sent a picture to dad yet, but you're planning to soon.

Your strikers are a different story. Factory new, with just their check flight and delivery flight on them, plus the time you've spent in the air. Hell, their paint is brand new, though you're waiting for the major's permission to add some paintwork of your own.

Your takeoff roll is unhurried and leisurely, not the full afterburner affair of a combat scramble. There's not much flying today- a JAL flight passing to the south is about your only company in the airspace.

Katsumi takes the lead, but her slow speed means she's just out for a stroll too, not some other motive.

“Where you feel like flying, Jessica?” She asks. “I don't feel like picking.”

At least Jake never did that except that one time and she was a really nice person but she was way too quiet and that was when he was in college anyway and I don't think Rex really works like that with girls or anything else and he kind of is just around to make mom and dad mad.” You manage to finish in one breath.

The JAL flight- a big 747- looks like it's just leveling out. You're careful to keep a few dozen yards off the wing tip and a good hundred feet above it as you cruise alongside- those big jets have wicked intake suction, and you'd hate to be the first witchstrike incident on a civilian airliner.

You're just starting to pass the front row of windows, just behind the cockpit, when a terrible metallic screaming fills the air. Katsumi flips over, looking back behind you, and her eyes shoot open in shock, as she starts a rapid climb away from the jumbo.

You look back over your shoulder, following her. The aircraft's tailfin looks like it's been chewed on by Rufus- the rear half is gone, and the remaining portion is badly damaged. A cloud of hydraulic fluid hangs behind the stricken jet, and below, a debris cluster falls to the ocean.

“Missile hit?” You cry, pulling your rifle free and scanning for airborne threats.

Katsumi shakes her head. “Couldn't have been! The air force didn't report anything and it couldn't have been surface launched!”

The pilots look like they're struggling to control the jet, and the continual loss of their hydraulic fluid can't be helping that. The debris back there looks pretty dangerous, but if you don't do something, everybody on this thing is dead.

It's similar enough though. That the plane is also JAL means that repairs on this one could have been sloppy as well. I believe it was a number of years before they managed to inspect and properly repair all their remaining planes in the wake of the incident.

Kat's already calling it in, and a general air-defense warning has gone out- just in case. There's not much you can honestly do if this thing loses all it's controls, it's just too damned big.

But, you can maybe keep it from losing everything. These big civilian birds, they're built for capacity and safety, and have multiple redundant systems. As long as they still have one hydraulic system, they should be able to limp back, though it won't be a fun ride.

Let's see Frank do this! You think, dropping back away from Katsumi.

“Kat! I'm dropping back!” You call out, letting the airliner gain some lead space on you and then closing from above and behind. “If we can't plug up one of these lines-”

Working on a badly damaged airliner's tail as the crew slowly loses control isn't exactly your idea of a good time, but it is interesting as all hell. Exciting to boot.

“Two of these lines are gone!” You call back. “One's maybe savable if I had some tools, and the other's... I can't even find it.” you inch closer, mindful of the jagged debris.
