Haha, you thought there'd be news here! joke's on you!

nothing new.

anyway, Archives here: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Strike%20witches%201989

It's a little old, but still works just fine.

“So how's your brother doing?” Katsumi, or, as her friend insists you call her, 'the imperial princess Katsumi' asks you. Her full title takes too long and you usually lose interest in whatever it was you were going to say halfway through the name anyway, so you just shorten it to Katsumi. Or Kat. She doesn't seem to mind either way. You think she likes Kat, actually. She's a lot more laid back than Ayumi, her friend.

Ayumi's kind of a stuck-up bitch, you think. She actually seems to have it out for you, but you don't really care much since she's a bitch and you tend to just tune those out. Besides, she ain't a marine, you don't have to care about her.

Kat's a different story. She must have taken notes from Frank, you think. She's between you and the holiest of holy, the coffee pot. Your dad taught you the wonder that was sweet coffee- basically, make a pot of coffee with about six cups of sugar in it. Best stuff ever and you wish more people would try it. Anyone else- well, anyone except Rand, who hates you because Frank ripped into her, and your CO, who's quiet and really kind of scary good at the whole violence thing- you'd just go around. Or over. Or under. You've found that speed is the best option for acquiring coffee when other people don't want you to.

Kat, though, Kat's quick. And perfectly willing and capable of putting you on the receiving end of the 'psycho little sister' routine, as Rex once called it. It's almost unsettling, not being the supplier of the insane energy in the immediate vicinity. You're not sure what to make of it, really.

You like Kat, she's fun.

You mumble something, shifting to your right, then to your left as she keeps herself interposed between you and the glorious, delicious coffee. “This is cruel and unusual.” You state, trying to not whine. Kat laughs.

“How's your brother?” She asks again. Maybe if you answer her, she'll let you have the coffee? 'Course, you're kinda mad at Frank right now, and you're not sure she even means Frank anyway. Why would anyone ask about him? He's kind of dumb. Tabby and that Katya chick seem to like him though, you can tell. Maybe Rachel does too, but Rachel's crazy too, and you know better than to question it.

Tabby and Katya and Rachel's taste in men is seriously lacking, in your opinion.

[x] Which Brother do you mean? I have lots of brothers. Even if Rex never talks to us and Jake is kind of a big dumb tanker and Frank is a damned dirty squid.

“Which brother d'ya mean, Kat?” You ask, edging towards the coffee pot. “I have lots of brothers! Rex, but he never really talks to us, and Jake, but he's... what did dad call them? DAT? Something like that. Anyway, Jake drives around on the ground and hides behind like, three hundred inches of armor and calls Frank a dumbass because he flies a million parts of things riding a contained explosion and pisses all over Newton whatever that means, and Frank's just a dumbass squid and no one likes squids, not even squids, and...”

“I mean Frank, Jessica. Do you really need more coffee?“ Kat asks, laughing. You nod emphatically. Yes, dammit, you do need more coffee!

“Well I guess he's fine.” You say, finally squeaking past her and into the clear. Coffee! This makes your fourth cup of the day, and you're finally starting to hit that point where you're pretty sure you've had enough.

Well, ok. Enough for the next couple hours. Sleep is for the weak. And the Navy.

“But he hasn't written me and the last thing he said was to steer clear of that crazy Soviet witch but we haven't seen her since he left and I'm pretty sure he was just being overprotective anyway, since they always are because dur, little sister, must protect but I'm a witch! I can take care of myself and....”

Katsumi holds out her hands, making a 'slow down' motion. Slow down? Who wants to do that?

“So he hasn't written yet?” She asks. Why's she so interested, anyway?

So what are the chances that Merlin's boyfriend asks us to help him get a letter to her via our brother or something like that? And that at first we hilariously misinterpret him as either having a crush on us or having a crush on Frank?

[x] “No. Why are you so interested? Do you like him?”

You cock your head to the side. “No. Why are you so interested? Do you like him too? You need to get your brain checked if you do. Frank's boring! All my brothers are. All Frank does is fly around and we can already do that like, way better, and ride around on Grampa's motorcycle with that big damn dog of his that totally isn't a dog I know a dinosaur when I see one and that's a dinosaur or maybe a bear and- “

Kat's laughter causes you to pause. She shakes her head. “Like him? Oh no. No no. Ayumi was curious, is all. She thinks you may be related.”

“Related?” You make a face. “Kat, I know she's your friend but she's kind of a bitch.”

Katsumi just laughs harder at that. She's kind of weird. Maybe she could marry Frank, you'd be ok with that. She seems like she'd be more fun as a sister in law than Tabby or Katya.

[x] Kat's fun! Let's see what kind of trouble we can get into along with her!

Katsumi's interesting enough that you hand her a cup of coffee follow her out of the kitchen. While sometimes her duties- both as an Imperial princess and Imperial Navy officer call her off where you can't tag along, that's not real common. The only place you haven't really been is the Imperial palace, and to be honest, what's there? Bunch of boring stuff, that's what.

She takes a sip, then yanks the cup away from her face with a scowl. “Jessica, how much sugar is in here?”

You take a sip and make a face of your own, reaching for the sugar tub and spooning in more, till your coffee reaches the consistency of maple syrup. Perfect.

Katsumi just shakes her head with a laugh, setting her cup down on the counter. “I think I'll leave that for you.” She says, nodding to Major Bradshaw as she walks in.

The major eyes the coffee cup sitting on the counter, then looks at you. “Bishop, did you make this?”

You nod, and she sighs. “Knock it off with the coffee, Marine. I don't need to be sending you home when your heart explodes, understood? Two cups max from here on in.”

“An hour?” You ask, innocently.

“A day.” She responds, bluntly. “If I have to, I'll have Rand move the coffee pot. Don't make me have to do that, Marine.”

[x] “This is cruel! I need coffee to live! To liiiiive!”

You fix her with your best, absolutely guaranteed to make even Rex cave, puppy dog eyes. “But... but coffee?” You say, working to keep your voice small and somewhere between terrified and confused.

She doesn't fall for it. “Two cups, marine. Normal sized ones. None of those forty ounce big gulp cups full of coffee.”

Damn, there goes your backup plan.

“But.. This is cruel! I need coffee to live! To liiiiiive!” You protest, watching in horror as she empties the pot- so much wasted coffee!- and rinses it out.

“And don't try to go off post and get some either,” She says. “I'll know.”

You're pretty sure she would. She seems to have a sixth sense about that kind of thing. It's downright creepy.

You follow Kat out of the building, dragging your feet somewhat in disappointment. Limited coffee intake? How are you going to manage?

The base hasn't changed much since you first arrived, though some of the AA guns have been removed, and others replaced by towed units. Soviet and Chinese overflights of the islands proper have stopped for the most part, though some of the southern cities and Okinawa still have to deal with the occasional raid. But the days of scrambling off the runway to deal with incoming, at least here, are over.

Well, for the most part. The base is honestly pretty boring, and too far back to be keeping witches. At least, that's what the Major says, while Rand, when she'll talk to you, says it's fucking dumber than the shit they pulled in Alaska. Katsumi hasn't really commented, but you think she's been pushing to get the squadron out to sea, where you're a lot closer to the front- and a lot more useful.

And it's a lot less boring.

“So, Jessica.” Katsumi says, and you can't help but notice you're making your way to the hangars. “Feel like going for a flight? We’ll have to stay in the area, but the Major won't mind as long as we're close to home plate here.”

“Home plate?” You ask. “Like in baseball? Baseball's kinda stupid. And boring. Football's better.”

“Football?” Katsumi asks.

“American footabll. Not soccer. Soccer is acting. And boring too. Though the soccer hooligans are awesome. Hey! After the war, wanna go be a soccer hooligan with me?”

Katsumi laughs. “You want to go for a hop, or not?”

The joke is the amount of red tape the Brits have to go through for a fucking boiler vessel, I mean for Australia's M1A2's, we asked if they could come with refrigerated armored compartments for storage, and guess what, we got armor plated eskies on the rear of our turrets for no extra charge, GD threw them in for free

yea, the problem is this 'requirement' is not a 'standard', it is required to have the boiler vessel before it reaches its parent unit, but there is not 'standard' demanding it have one when it leaves the factory, and there is a stupid amount of bureaucracy involved between the factory and the parent unit

that is how stupid the British army and its bureaucracy is, and between the vee leaving the factory and reaching the parent unit, where officially nothing happens, there is usually a period of 2-5 weeks of 'paper work',tens of thousands of pounds are spent on this 'paper work', and all that fucking happens is they fit a boiler vessel to the thing, and break its AC.

their army is held together by masking tape (they can't afford duct tape) and their bureaucracy is run by a bureaucracy

[] Yeah! Beats standing around.

“Beats standing around!” You respond with glee.

As much as you make fun of Frank, you understand why he loves flying so much. You're willing to bet he'd love it a lot more if he flew like you did, without being encased in that steel and glass prison. It's stupid. Pilots talk of freedom and power, but they can't hear and see the same as you can, covered by the canopy like they are. They're reliant on radar and the eyes of other people to cover their blind spots.

You, you have a full, unrestricted sphere of vision around you, no metal to block your line of sight. Plus you can hear a lot better, even if you have to be careful about relying on sound- it can get a bit distorted by supersonic aircraft and missiles.

It's one of those arguments that swings way above your head. Some people say witches are better in that regard, others say that radar was just the precursor to you being totally outclassed by fighters, and once they can get the survivability down, witches will be a thing of the past. You don't really believe that- there's always going to be witches- but to hear Kat talk about Frank and how he can fly a fighter, or the twins, whoever they are, you're wondering if there might not be pilots that can match them.

Inside the hangar, you stop by your locker, pulling out your HUD and wrist MFD. The HUD isn't too bad, though a lot of the time you think it's pretty useless- You'd rather do without, honestly, and just use a good rifle optic and a skydiving altimeter, but squadron SOP is to wear the HUD. The wrist MFD is really great though, and you're glad you have it. Map function is your best friend.

Your strikers sit in their rack, along with your weapon of choice. It took some doing, but you turned up your dad's M-14, the one he went through the jungle with. You got lucky it was still in a depot armory for some reserve unit. It's since been restored and blueprinted, and you've been working with your armory team on it, trying to learn it down to the tiniest detail. You haven't sent a picture to dad yet, but you're planning to soon.

Your strikers are a different story. Factory new, with just their check flight and delivery flight on them, plus the time you've spent in the air. Hell, their paint is brand new, though you're waiting for the major's permission to add some paintwork of your own.

Your takeoff roll is unhurried and leisurely, not the full afterburner affair of a combat scramble. There's not much flying today- a JAL flight passing to the south is about your only company in the airspace.

Katsumi takes the lead, but her slow speed means she's just out for a stroll too, not some other motive.

“Where you feel like flying, Jessica?” She asks. “I don't feel like picking.”

[x] South! Let's go buzz that JAL flight or something!

“Let's head south.” You say, following Kat's leisurely turn. “It's always fun to fly alongside airliners for a while.”

Kat laughs. “Like having your picture taken?”

“Well, I have to get in the paper more than Frank.” You say. “And he's always playing the hero type so he can get pictures taken and on the news and stuff, just because he wants to impress girls. At least Jake never did that except that one time and she was a really nice person but she was way too quiet and that was when he was in college anyway and I don't think Rex really works like that with girls or anything else and he kind of is just around to make mom and dad mad.” You manage to finish in one breath.

The JAL flight- a big 747- looks like it's just leveling out. You're careful to keep a few dozen yards off the wing tip and a good hundred feet above it as you cruise alongside- those big jets have wicked intake suction, and you'd hate to be the first witchstrike incident on a civilian airliner.

You're just starting to pass the front row of windows, just behind the cockpit, when a terrible metallic screaming fills the air. Katsumi flips over, looking back behind you, and her eyes shoot open in shock, as she starts a rapid climb away from the jumbo.

You look back over your shoulder, following her. The aircraft's tailfin looks like it's been chewed on by Rufus- the rear half is gone, and the remaining portion is badly damaged. A cloud of hydraulic fluid hangs behind the stricken jet, and below, a debris cluster falls to the ocean.

“Missile hit?” You cry, pulling your rifle free and scanning for airborne threats.

Katsumi shakes her head. “Couldn't have been! The air force didn't report anything and it couldn't have been surface launched!”

The pilots look like they're struggling to control the jet, and the continual loss of their hydraulic fluid can't be helping that. The debris back there looks pretty dangerous, but if you don't do something, everybody on this thing is dead.

[] Stay on Kat. That was a missile, they're after her.

The flight was also out of Tokyo international airport so it's obviously not.

It's similar enough though. That the plane is also JAL means that repairs on this one could have been sloppy as well. I believe it was a number of years before they managed to inspect and properly repair all their remaining planes in the wake of the incident.

The Oda were one of the first clans to get big into firearms and the Otomo mostly stayed in their own turf rather than get involved in the fighting. Yes, I fucking mad that they throw out historical accuracy just so they can have a gimmicky DLC faction.

>Using an ashigaru core
You can literally beat a yari ashigaru core with a katana cavalry core if you play it right. I want you to think about that.

Ashigaru make a great anvil, a great auxiliary, and great flank defense, but you can't use them as your main striking force.

You can if you also have another 2 fully filled ashigaru armies.

[x] drop back, see if you can't do something to plug up one hydraulic line! That was mechanical failure!

Kat's already calling it in, and a general air-defense warning has gone out- just in case. There's not much you can honestly do if this thing loses all it's controls, it's just too damned big.

But, you can maybe keep it from losing everything. These big civilian birds, they're built for capacity and safety, and have multiple redundant systems. As long as they still have one hydraulic system, they should be able to limp back, though it won't be a fun ride.

Let's see Frank do this! You think, dropping back away from Katsumi.

“Kat! I'm dropping back!” You call out, letting the airliner gain some lead space on you and then closing from above and behind. “If we can't plug up one of these lines-”

“It'll be one twenty three all over again.” Katsumi responds. “The rest of the squadron's getting in the air, and we've got a pair of navy witches diverting to help out, but they're too far to do much good. What do you see?”

Working on a badly damaged airliner's tail as the crew slowly loses control isn't exactly your idea of a good time, but it is interesting as all hell. Exciting to boot.

“Two of these lines are gone!” You call back. “One's maybe savable if I had some tools, and the other's... I can't even find it.” you inch closer, mindful of the jagged debris.

1/2
>>
So do we have any word on when the next Tank Witches is happening?
>>
“So you've got one line? Hang on, I'm on the way.” Kat returns.

She joins you, staying just above the hydraulic fluid cloud. You join her, shaking your head.

“I can see the lines, and I can probably fix them,” You start “But there's no way in there, not wearing strikers. One of the lines looks ok, like you could patch it up with parts of the others, but I don't know how long it'd hold, and we don't have what we need anyway.”

“How bad are the other three?” Kat asks.

You shrug. “Two of them are shot all to hell. The last, I couldn't even find. It's just the one, or we can't do anything.”

“And that hole's too small to get into wearing strikers. Ok,” Kat says, nodding, and handing you her rifle and sword. “I'll jettison my strikers, then go in there and patch it up. No sweat.”

Yeah, I just get buttmad about it.
I'm not usually very weeaboo, but within the limited context of Jap history, I'm kind of an Odaboo. I mean, Nobunaga did SO MUCH for the unification, but of the Three Great Unifiers, he's always the one who gets shit on, always portrayed as a raving psychopath. He was far from a nice guy, in fact he was incredibly ruthless, but his ruthlessness was always targeted, always pointed at the precise point where it NEEDED to be applied to get shit done. He did the dirty work, and he gets shit on for it.

[X] Like hell you will. I'm smaller and I've already seen the damage. Let me go.

You shake your head, shoving her equipment back at her and handing her your own rifle. “I”m smaller and I've already seen the damage.” You state. “Plus, I'm a Bishop! We're too stupid to be afraid till after it's over. Just ask Frank. You really could do better than like him, you know. And you're a bad liar. Why would you like him anyway? He's just a big dumb squid. Anyway, here I go!” You dive in on the stricken airliner- now headed north- flaring at the last second and dumping your strikers. The pair of units sputter and die as the magical energy feeding them is suddenly cut off, and you let out a small yelp as your skin hits the ice cold skin of the jet.

“Jessica? You ok?” Kat sounds worried. That's sweet of her, but you know what you're doing.

Kinda. Maybe. Ok, no, not really, not at all, but you're not gonna let anyone know that. As far as they need to know, you do this kind of thing all the time!

“I'm fine!” You call back, worming your way into the jet's innards. Thankfully, this thing is huge, but it was never designed for people in here. Of course, it looks like the designers never really meant for it to suffer a catastrophic failure back here either, so that point is totally ignorable.

The two most damaged lines are totally dry, but you've always carried a multitool, and it only takes a few minutes to strip off the parts you need and plug the worst of the leaks in the line, securing some of it in place with strips cut from your Marine corps witches' blouse, which, as far as you're concerned, makes this the best damn aircraft in the JAL's inventory.

1/2
>>
Kat stays in constant contact with you, relaying with the pilots, who say their #2 line's pressure is low, but it's stabilizing, and they're able to keep some control, even if they're having to control yaw through differential throttle settings.

Most of that flies over your head, but the important part is they didn't lose their controls. You tuck the leatherman tool into the top of your skivvies- having cut your shirt apart, you realize it's damn cold up here.

You have to squirm and twist and be really thankful your folks insisted on gymnastics to get out, and the first blast of air reminds you to put up a shield- which is really taxing without a focus, and you can't maintain it long, but it's there. “Done!” You exclaim, poking your head and shoulders up above the level of the fuselage's skin.

Up above, Katsumi and two unfamiliar witches- new friends! You think- are holding a formation. One of them shouts a warning that's lost on you, but you manage to turn enough to catch the flying piece of debris mostly with your shoulder and back. Which, you think, as your vision starts tunneling down, is good, damn thing probably would have decapitated you.

Still, the shock of the hit knocks you free from your precarious perch, causing you to cut your stomach and legs badly on the jagged edges of the tailfin as you fall clear. Honestly, you think. Honestly? This is bullshit. You're barely aware of the arms that catch you, or Kat's voice yelling for you to stay awake, focus, she's got you.

You can't suppress a grin as consciousness fades. She's got really nice boobs.
