Welcome to the fifteenth episode of A Game of Thrones – The Quest of House Harrock.
Previously: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/25158316/
All Previous Threads: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Harrock

In this quest, the year is 284AL and it is eight months after Robert Baratheon was crowned king. You are Lord Artys “Hangman” Harrock, thirty-eight years old and the head of House Harrock, sworn to House Arryn of the Mountain and Vale. You are a dedicated, devoted and cunning man, eager to see the rebirth of your house from its ruined state. With a head for numbers, a good sword-hand and an exotic Valyrian yataghan named 'Ambition,' you shall lead your family to new wealth and new stability.

During the last episode, a few things happened. Bronze Yohn prevailed against the Belmore knight, Ser Marwyn – if only by knocking his opponent unconscious. In the following feast, many things occurred. You spoke with Lord Royce Coldwater on the topic of his son as a possible ward but he asks for a future child of yours in return. You were caught up in a scheme designed by Lord Benedar Belmore with the purpose of bringing a new knight into the fold, only to claim Ser Banton as your own – although it isn't yet public. Finally, Lord Yohn Royce announced the lists for the grand melee. You fell asleep beside your wife but now it is time to awake and see how your son performs.

Is anyone interested in continuing?

As this rule continues to enforce order and removes any discussion of tripcodes, I'll maintain it until the moment it stops being useful.
>Anyone who posts with a tripcode or a name will be ignored. If you wish for your contributions to the quest to be read, then you will post anonymously.

In addition, Page has started up his own Game of Thrones quest again. I suggest you read the adventures of Lord William Bordain for yourself. It predates the Quest of House Harrock and to be frank, if you like this quest, then you'll love Page's take on GoT. It takes place every Saturday, starting at roughly 9PM EST.

Finally, the Quest of House Harrock will not be taking place this Friday; I have a nine hour shift on Saturday and I'd get less than two hours of sleep if I ran this quest the night before. Instead the next episode shall be taking place precisely a week from now, on Monday the 10th of June, 9PM GMT.

As we always are.

Westpass. This is your land, your territory, your home. It's a harsh and unforgiving place, sparsely populated by evergreens and hardy shrubs. It's a steep valley filled with sudden falls, treacherous cliffs and unexpected gutters and furrows. Anyone who lives in this part of the Vale of Arryn quickly learns to walk softly and with great care.

Splitting Westpass in half is a great river just as unimaginatively named, the Westflow. Born from a great sheet of water that descends from the mountains, the small stream quickly transforms into a great raging current, with many muddy little rills and brooks contributing to its size. Despite the dangerous pace at which it flows, there are a few safe places where the river can be forded.

Clinging to the mountains on either side of the Westflow, the road for which the region is named winds and bends, a well-worn path of gravel and dirt that it is your duty to protect and maintain. One of the few routes in and out of the Vale, many merchants use the Westpass for their trade routes for a certain fee. To the North, the road leads to Strongsong. To the East, the road leads to Crown Crag.

Finally, there are the great structures of Westpass. The hub of civilisation is High Harrock, a grim and foreboding structure that brings comfort to the inhabitants of the region as the sole provider of protection, boasting an iron mine and great solid stone walls. Then there are the two towers that guard it; Skycliff built amongst the peaks and Wetrock built upon a solid stone foundation beside the Westflow.

But what about the people who live here? There are a few thousand smallfolk scattered throughout the land, in huts and hovels that dot the rocky landscape. It's a hard life but honest life, where they harvest and farm what they can, whenever they can. Some keep herds of hardy mountain goats for their meat and milk, while others farm lettuces, berries and edible ferns.

This is your land and these are your people. Treat them well.

Rising from your bed after a long and pleasant night, you find the rising sun greeting you through the window. Strange; you're usually much more efficient, a man with little need for sleep who wakes before the dawn. Perhaps you have grown used to the luxury offered by this fine establishment – and the luxury of your wife, your undressed bodies affectionately tangled together beneath the sheets after a night of passion. That is stranger still. Are you letting the warmth of family interfere with your cold, mechanical efficiency?

Reluctantly parting yourself from the ample form beneath the sheets, you went through your normal rituals of cleansing your body and preparing yourself for the day ahead, dressing in the drab greys and blues of your house. Perhaps your choice in clothes is a tad too plain for courtly matters such as these but you would appear practical than look as foppish as your dear neighbour, Lord Loras Egen. The thought of dressing as he does almost brings a shudder to your spine.

There are a few hours until the grand event; is there anything you wish to do about town?
>Are there any individuals you wish to speak to beforehand?
>Do you wish to check for the arrival of any ravens?
>What about retainers? Is there anyone that you seek to bring into the fold?
>Is there anything that you wish to buy?
>Sod everything, time for the grand melee!
>Or anything else you can think of.

And the heraldry of House Coldwater.
>>
>>25222876

Of interest; check for new ravens, speak with our son about the melee offering advice we really don't have much right giving, and then we can discuss the possibility of retainers. People have been coming up with different ideas here and there the last couple of quests.

I mentioned something about a Master of Spoken Tongues last session.
>>
>>25222876
I think we wanted to speak with Lord Lynderly again, and find the Coldwater knight who's armour we have to see how much we'd get for its return.

Checking for ravens is a great idea.

Ohhh! We wanted to talk to Mabbin (Ser Naptys' squire), to see if, since he no longer has a knight to follow, he wants to squire for us or one of our knights. We can at least give him a home.

It'll also help if he's helping to keep an eye on Brock for us, especially with two Belmore knights on the same team as him.
>>
>>25222876

Let's speak to our son and give him some words of encouragement before the melee
>>
>>25222886
>>25222897
Not bad at all. What programs did you use to make them, Plasma?
>>
>>25222876

>>

>>25222926
>>25222911
First of all, ravens.

You check with Maester Ralion, a servant of House Belmore who seems to be mostly reliable. At least, you trust the man more than you trust any other dog of Belmore, considering he didn't try to poison you when tending to your injuries. Anyway, there is a raven that arrived during the night. It's from your dear uncle.

>Lord Artys Harrock of Westpass,
>I hope that you are enjoying the hospitality provided by Lord Benedar Belmore. It must truly be spectacular in order to keep you from returning to your house in times of need. I trust in your judgement however; clearly a social event such of this is of greater value that our land's stability.
>I offer good news. As far as we are aware, these archers have been driven from our lands after a pitched battle at the foot of the Wetrock. Ser Boros managed to interrupt a second attack on the tower and harried them East to the border of Crown Crag, where Ser Tenry and his men were waiting – against the orders of Ser Crowlys, Lord Egen's lackey. Most of the archers managed to flee but we killed roughly ten of them and captured two; unfortunately, six members of the Wetrock garrison, eight rangers and three Woodsmen died as a result of the conflict.
>I believe it was Ser Tenry who masterminded this defence, although he does not admit to it. I fear that his actions may have only increased the tension between House Harrock and House Egen. However, it also saved lives and earned us valuable assets ripe for questioning. I have the two archers contained beneath High Harrock, waiting for your return. I hope you shall return soon and leave behind the farce of courtly matters. Your house needs you.
>Your blood and your faithful servant,
>Alric Harrock, Castellan of High Harrock.
>>
>>25222995
Fuck yeah Ser Tenry. Dude deserves a promotion or something.

We need to leave as soon as the melee is concluded. We should be back in High Harrock by nightfall, or at least back in Crown Crag so we can find out why Ser Crowlys is being such a righteous cunt.
>>
>>25222995
Fuck yes! We got them!

Still, this is worrying... it sounds like they fled into House Egen's lands, which doesn't bode at all well for us, since it'd imply that Egen has been duping us the entire time, when he previously seemed very friendly (especially in regards to the upgrading of the port, etc).

I thought he was going to be our bro, but it seems like we'll have to be a lot more careful with him in future.

We should send a letter back (closed with our wax seal), telling our uncle that we should hopefully return in the next couple of days, and to ensure the guard on the captives is doubled, in case they try to kill themselves before interrogation. Also tell him to inform Ser Tenry to be on high alert, in case House Egen makes any move against us, due to our deteriorating relations, and congratulate him on his expert handling of the situation.

Ohh... was the letter from our uncle sealed with wax? Otherwise it means that Belmore have read it.

>>
>>25223150
There is a faint trace of red wax where the letter was previously sealed - removed before you got your hands on it. Someone else read the parchment before you did. That's the most logical explanation. Apparently what trust you had in the Maester may have been misplaced.

As for a response to the raven, do you wish to stick with the suggestion of >>25223068? If there are no other proposals, I shall go with it.
>>
>>25223199
That sounds fine, go ahead.
>>
>>25223199
Yea, go with that suggestion, and watch the maester send it prior to leaving, we don't want him reading out mail.

Once we've seen it leave, tell him in future that less pleasant people than us might not take kindly to him looking in their missives, and that he might want to think before doing so in future.
>>
>>25223199
Don't send anything back, anything the belmores don't get their hands on, is something less to worry about.
>>25223249
And certainly don't threaten the man outright, we don't even know if it was him, and if it was him, he's probably being commanded to.
>>
>>25223199
>>25223242
>>25223249
Oh, also add in that the Rangers should keep a close eye on the border with House Belmore, as their maester opened his letter prior to us getting hold of it, and so they might try to capitalise on the situation with Egen, and they also know what happened with the archers now.

We should also talk to Lord Badics at some point, then, to tell him what happened with the archers. Not sure if we should tell him about the captives, though.
>>
>>25223242
>>25223068
>>25223249
>>25223283
Sending a letter containing details of how to keep an eye on the prisoners and how Ser Tenry should remain alert and prepared for any signs of betrayal, you deliver a brief speech to the Maester. Not so much a threat, but a warning; it is not wise to look into the letters of lords.

Frankly, this Maester Ralion seems utterly unimpressed.
"Forgive me my Lord Harrock, but I value duty above honour. I am bound to serve House Belmore by oath and I shall only refuse the most heinous crimes in their name. If a Belmore wishes to read a letter delivered witihin their territory then I shall offer the letter to them, no matter who it was addressed to. I do not wish to conspire against you, my Lord Harrock. I simply serve those that do. If there's nothing else, I have duties to attend to."

>Go to visit Brock and offering as much advice as you can?
>>
>>25223367
Sounds good, let's head over to talk to him.
>>
>>25223367
"Belmore's territory. Yes. A tender distinction. Mind your chain, Maester - if it grows too heavy for you I would be glad to measure one for you of hemp instead of iron."

Let's talk to Brock.
>>
>>25223460
Anyone for or against this threat?
>>
>>25223460
Nah, don't threaten him more. He knows we're onto him and his liege, so that's good enough for now, since we won't be receiving any more letters during our stay here (if we leave soon after the melee tournament has finished).
>>
>>25223479
No, don't make the threat. He is right, and we'd probably do the same, so now he knows we know he opened the letter, that should do.
>>

Holding your tongue, you decide to contain the Hangman persona for the time being. You'd rather not give Lord Benedar Belmore any further reason to use that title against you. Leaving the Maester's chamber, you go to find your son wherever he may be.

It seems like the boy woke earlier than you did. He is already hard at working practising with an extremely irate Ser Lyn; at least, you assume it's practice. The knight of House Corbray carries a longsword, blunted but lethal nonetheless while Brock fights with his flail. With the thick wooden haft of the weapon your boy parries many a strike offered by the knight of Corbray, at one point catching the dull blade in the chain of his flail and yanking it clean out of Ser Lyn's hand. With a snarl, your heir's tutor tears a genuine hunting knife, sharp and dangerous from his belt and gives your son a brutal shove on to the earth only for the lad to grasp his wrist and bring him smashing down into the soil beside him. However, the dagger is held in Lyn Corbray's other hand and it takes him but a moment to bring it to Brock's throat with a dark expression. The hateful silence is held between the two for many long moments before the knight looks up towards you and pulls himself to his feet, out of your son's grasp.

"You're not going to hope to defeat another squire, fighting like that. You should withdraw the boy now, Lord Artys. He's hopeless; no hope of victory and no hope of knighthood. But I refuse to let him drag me down with him. I shan't bother defending the child during the melee, that I promise you."

With a face scarlet with rage, Brock shoves himself to his feet but doesn't utter a word, instead glaring between the two of you and awaiting judgement.
>>
I always miss the running... I've been reading since the first episode, and Harrock has turned me on to the other previous aSoIaF quests and the Green Ronin game itself, gonna be starting a game with a few friends in a couple weeks. So glad to be here for once, thank you for this quest Plasma.
>>
>>25223746
Haha, Lyn's so pissed. Brock had him beaten until he pulled the knife. What a bitch.

I guess we should tell Brock that he shouldn't worry about the melee - the joust is for knights to show their skill, but the melee is where real fighters show their talents.
>>
>>25223746
On your head be it then, that your grouping be divided and easy prey.

Brock, stay safe and give a good showing.
>>
>>25223746
Side with Brock.
"A knight without a sword is no knight at all, and my son took yours."
Maybe too snide, but I like it anyhow.
>>
>>25223746
Lyn's just bitching that the boy managed to disarm him - if he managed to do that with a knight of Lyn's quality, he'll easily best most of the squires out there.

"He managed to disarm you, Ser Corbray, and whilst you might have bested him in a true battle, he would have defeated many of the other participants here. You should be proud that your student managed such a feat as to take your sword, it reflects well on your tutorship. I look forward to seeing how well you do in the melee, Ser Lyn."

Then turn to Brock, and take him to one side.

"That was no small feat you did there, boy, and don't listen to Corbray, he's just hurting that you managed to snatch his sword away so easily. You've got skill, lad, and with it you'll go far. Now, just keep that up, and you'll massacre them out there. Not many people make a fool out of Ser Lyn Corbray and live to talk about it, so don't go boasting or anything, or he's liable to do more than just not bother having your back during the melee. You'll do us proud, my son."
>>
>>25223746
>Your choices are your own, Ser Lyn, but Brock will participate in the melee, if he still wants to.
Once the Corbray is gone;
>If you fight like that during the melee, I doubt anyone but Bronze Yohn himself could beat you, son. But, one word of caution. The grand melee is good and all, but I'm not expecting you to fight to the death. Once you're in there, you'll do well, I know that, but not everything is within your control. The Belmores might play underhanded, Seven knows they're not above that, or you might just get unlucky, but whatever the situation, if your life is in danger, yield. You're my son and heir, and I am not sure I or our House could survive losing you.

Brock's muddy, piggy eyes blink in shock, surprise showing through the low intelligence that dominates his gaze. His perpetual scowl gives way to a ragged, giddy grin at the compliments and comments that you provide while Ser Lyn simply twists his lips in a sneer, seizing his sword and sheathing it. Striding away, he leaves you and your son to speak alone. One thing's certain, your boy has been touched by your words. More than touched, honoured. Blessed. You doubt he's ever received praise like that in his life.

However, it doesn't last for long as he has other things to tend to. Meticulously and almost obsessively admiring that sturdy wood of the flail, he inspects the weapon for any damage. He certainly seems to cherish this gift, more than any other that you have previously offered him. Eventually he looks up to you, all rage having drained from him but his mirth has gone as well. All that's left is uncertainty as he asks a rather hesitant question.

"Father... This isn't just practice. This is a real fight. Blades may have been blunted but you can still stab with a sword and a spear or smash with a hammer or mace. If I go into this fight wearing leather, I doubt I'll last a moment against all of these knights 'n lords... I want to wear real armour. Your armour. If uh, if you'll let me."

Wear it with pride, my son, for, if you do well, you will not only have brought honour to your family, but you may soon have your own armour, and the title of Ser Harrock as well.

Plasma, I've been meaning to ask, are we taking a break when the show concludes ( a season break you could call it) or going straight through?

I just have a sneaky suspicion that a lot of people might leave as soon as the show finishes for the year
>>
>>25224120
>>25224100
Despite Ser Lyn's rant about hope, you can see plenty of that in the boy's eyes, past that haze of stupidity and his fat, bulging face. He's lost for words even as you console him and honour him in a way that he never has been before. A thrill of pride shoots through his body but at the same time, he nods sincerely in response to the caution that you offer. The lad even gives an uncertain grin when you joke about Lady Deyya.

"Y'know, a few weeks ago I thought that neither of you gave a... Thank you, father."

Leading him away, you go to try and fit the armour on him. It's a tight fit, more than tight. There are several unsightly bulges in the half-plate where fat and flubber is quite visible and many components need to be stretched in order for him to have a hope on wearing it. You are unsure whether this broad, big-boned warrior before you - all clad in plates of metal and layers of chains - is an intimidating sight or a ridiculous one. When he tries to move, it's with some difficulty, forcing him to move in an encumbered waddle. This boy will either make you proud or humiliate your house in front of all of the Vale.

What's your verdict? Should he keep the armour on for the duration?
>>
>>25224290
>We'll end this season when appropriate. I'm not stopping just because the show will.
>>
>>25224299

Maybe only some of the armor, mobility is important.
>>
>>25224299
Son, do you think you can move sufficiently? Mobility is key, being protected will do you no good if you can't move. Perhaps we could try taking some off, and leaving only your vital areas protected?
>>
>>25224299
No, it's not going to fit, we should see if there's a suit of chain or something around town that'll fit him better, and get him a full suit properly made when we get back home.

"I'm sorry Brock, but this isn't going to work, the armor's so tight you can hardly move."

"Lets find something in town better than those leathers, and when we get home I'll be sure to have our smiths make something better for you that'll fit properly."
>>
>>25224336

However, he is still our son. Plasma, is there a Harrock insignia on this armour? I'd imagine this is what Brock wants to wear more than anything
>>
What about our brigandine? its still our personal armor, he might handle it better than the half-plate while still wearing /our/ armor.
>>
>>25224368
House Harrock has never been the wealthiest house. The platemail is rather plain and standard with no signs indicating which house it belongs to. Normally you'd wear a surcoat with the armour, as you did during the joust, but for the competition the boy will have to be wearing a yellow tabard, his grouping's colours.
>>
>Apologies, 4chan just wiped my post. Rewriting.
>>
>>25224409
>>25224365

Yeah, can he try the brigandine?
>>
>>25224365
second
>>
>>25224420
>>25224299
Could he just wear the front part of the armour? Would that aid his mobility? We could get him a chainmail shirt too, to go underneath it.

Really, though, it comes down to how well he can move in it. Have him try out a few swings, get a feel for it, before asking him if he thinks it will do.

Either way, we tell him that, after this melee, we will have a set commissioned for him.

His hope quickly diminishes and his mood rapidly descends. The foolish lad's a bit self-conscious that much is certain. Tearing off pieces of the armour in a bit of a fit, you need to remind the lad of his value and assist him in removing it in a more careful fashion. Once he's dressed normally, you can choose whether you want to go and buy suitable armour from the merchants - who are peddling these sorts of wares during tournaments like these - or you could try and offer him some of your own.

>The armour you have available to give him is:
>Hard Leather
>Breastplate
>Brigantine
>Half-plate
>If you choose to buy, you can choose any from this following list.
>If you choose to buy, you won't be able to do anything else before the melee. You may even be a little late.
>>
>>25224587
Hmm... Ideally the Breastplate should be an easy fit, just adjust the straps between the front and back plates. Could work if the brigantine wont.
>>
>>25224587

Lets go with Brigandine then
>>
>>25224587

Lets try the Brigandine, if not go for Breastplate as something to protect Brocks vitals.

We also need to reassure Brock that we love him and think that he'll make a fine warrior, but fine warriors need to be able to move, and while the full plate armour will make him even more dangerous in the future, its making him dangerous to himself within the tourney grounds

Also, make a passing quip about if he does well enough than maybe he'll get his pick of the women
>>
>>25224683
I agree. Brock hasn't trained in plate, and learning plate is one of the hardest tasks for a soldier/knight. He WILL use it. Just not without proper training and preparation.

>>25224654

>We also need to reassure Brock that we love him and think that he'll make a fine warrior, but fine warriors need to be able to move, and while the full plate armour will make him even more dangerous in the future, its making him dangerous to himself within the tourney grounds.

Definitely this. He is a warrior, he'll understand that mobility is more important than bogging himself down with thick armour.

Try him with the Brigandine and Breastplate, though - the second should definitely fit him, it just requires the straps to be shifted.
>>
>>25224587

>>25224632

Trying the brigantine and the breastplate, both seem to be of reasonable fit. The breastplate needs its buckles adjusted and the brigantine is almost too short but both fit much better than the half-plate that the lad tried to wear. The piggy lad's temper is quickly soothed by your words and he settles down to mumbling his thanks. He seems to have quite the fragile ego, to say the least.

>Stick with the brigantine? It seems to have the most votes. Also, please suggest one last event you'd like before the melee, if any.
>>
>>25224765
His fragile ego only makes sense. We did ignore him for nearly his entire life.
>>
>>25224587

I would say the Brigandine, and make promise to the lad that with a victory in the first round we will find something better, with a victory in the second an entire set fitted for him.

We have a damn iron man, I'm sure we can manage to build a set of plate for our son with some outside help. And giving him hope for the future of it and something else to strive for in the melee should help.

Also, should we recommend he ask for favor? Perhaps from Egen's daughter, if she refuses I know it will go poorly, but if she doesn't we can laugh at Egen's suppressed rage.
>>
>>25224765

Check on our wife and daughter

Maybe have them give encouraging words to Brock
>>
>>25224765

I'd say go look for a Retainer or two. See if our son has any ideas on a teacher he'd like and our daughter as well. They both deserve to learn something they would enjoy from a master of it.
>>
>>25224765
Tell him that we'll train him in the use of full-plate ourselves, and we shall have a set of it made for him once we return to High Harrock.

If needs be, we will find a craftsman to stylise his armour, to better represent the man wearing it.

It'll have pies, cakes, and tits etched on it.
>>
>>25224814

>Hiring a master of a trade would consume a lot of resources - a lot. Ones that you don't currently have. However, you can always hire fairly standard retainers such as Royter, who are not of exceptional ability. A list of example retainers that you don't have:

>Spy
>Stable-hand

I like the Translator personally. He can teach and help when dealing with odd circumstances, and depending upon his or her origin might just be able to give advice on things we know little about.

The Stable-hand we have handled, just have one of our boys back home do it. I'd rather not hire someone like that in to care for something so important.

>>
>>25225031

for what? we live in the mountains where we couldn't use a cavalry unit anyways, and the horses we have a perfectly fine.

>You choose: Spy
>You may choose two from the following list to learn more information about and chat with - then you can choose the final candidate from those two or choose none at all.

>Your choices:
>An elderly bilingual bravo who claims to have once been a Faceless Man, a profession that he left behind in order to pursue freedom, no longer wishing to serve the God of Many Faces.
>A prim and improper madam who seems to be willing to sell away the secrets of her brothel's customers in exchange for cold hard silver. She will remain within Grimarbour if hired.
>A gelded fellow who claims to have been a gold cloak of King's Landing once before he was caught in the act of rape, something he was punished severely for. He seems to have a fair bit of knowledge about laws and their loopholes.
>A smuggler. A greedy fellow with his own interests and a small boat that he calls his own, crewed by a few people that he trusts. He claims that he can get to almost anywhere unseen, so long as it's a coastal region or beside a large river.
>A mountain man. You can tell it just from looking at him, he's a fucking inbred hill savage. Nonetheless, he likely knows his ways about the mountains and will likely be able to get anywhere within the Vale he wants.
>A locksmith. A humble fellow who doesn't seem to brag much but most of Grimarbour seems to speak quite highly of his skill at cracking any lock and designing ones that cannot be broken.
>A mummer. A trickster and an entertainer who can do many different tricks with his hands, including stealing away purses and pouches before his victims' very eyes, without them noticing a thing. So the rumours say.

They both can serve other purposes as a retainer that would be used as a cover. The former sounds the most interesting to me personally.

>>
>>25225464
I vote for the locksmith and the gelded man. Locksmith gives us more access to locked away places, and if we have anything we really need secured, he can build the lock for it.

The gelded man has a good knowledge of law and loopholes, he won't be able to rape again so his fatal flaw has already run it's course. He's a man in need of redemption that can be useful to us.
>>
>>25225694
Same here, especially since it looks like Egen is going to screw us over, after we were so good to him.
>>
>>25225683
Wait, actually, we should talk to the Mountain man. If we don't like his pitch, we kill him. if he is truly a traitor to his people, we can use him. If he hates them like we do, he is just the smartest hill folk man of all time.
>>
>>25225677
First of all, the bravo. His name, Lymorian. You thought you'd never see an individual wearing more colours than Loras Egen and you were wrong. This man is practically dressed in a patchwork rainbow he's so colourful, with loose fabric of red and blue, green and orange, purple and white and what have you. A long, droopy moustache marks his face giving the fellow an almost comical look but his hair itself is fairly cleanly cut and carefully groomed. This swarthy fellow hardly seems like any spy at all; nor a Faceless Man, current or former. Still, he weaves many colourful tales of his previous exploits and if nothing else, you find them fascinating. He was never a servant of any god; instead this Braavosi is simply a weaver of lies, a creator of myths and fabrications and only by the end of the enthralling discussion and tailoring of tales do you notice that his moustache is gone and his eyes seem a different colour, blue instead of dark brown; transformed from a comical figure into a handsome fox of an old man. You still disbelieve he was ever a faceless assassin but he is quite a skilled liar and clearly excellent with disguises.
>In return for service, he asks that you provide him with a home and do what you can to arrange a marriage between him and an ageing courtesan in Braavos known as Bellonara Otherys, the love of his life.

>Working on the Smuggler next.
>>
>>25225831
Seems promising. I dunno about convincing a courtesan to marry some nobody ex-pat in Westoros though... good prospect.
>>
>>25225831
Seems interesting to me, and even if he wasn't an assassin, he's a good liar and disguise expert, which would help a lot.

His price isn't too bad either, he seems a good choice.
>>
>>25225831
Second of all, the smuggler. His name, Grot. He also introduces you to his vessel, a rather shabby old sailing boat covered known as the Bitch of the Bay, manned by him, his younger brother, his uncle, his wife and his boy. All of them seem quite scummy and down on their lot, skin marked and marred by pox. They're a bunch of filthy beggars but they seem to know what they're talking about, revealing several hidden compartments on the boat and even offering to show you a few beneath it - but you don't feel like getting yourself soaked for the sake of their show. Even their boat is carefully painted a dull sea green, perfectly designed to blend into the ocean on a dull, overcast day. You notice various pots of paint scattered here and there, each one reflecting other conditions at sea. Although there's very few ways of demonstrating their skill at smuggling, they seem to be adequate enough and quite proud of themselves. Of course, there's no way to prove their claims - so this is an obvious risk. Only the uncle seems to have any missing fingers; either they're very good or utterly inexperienced.
>In return for service, he asks that you provide he and his family with immunity from the law in any ports that you control; starting with Lord Egen's and extending to any ports that you gain control of or build yourself.
>>

Lets go with the Braavosi
>>
>>25225958
Hmm... I prefer Lymorian of these twos.
>>
>>25225980
The braavosi seems like the best bet, perfect for doing things himself, as well as for setting up a network of spies.
>>
>>25225831
>>25225958
Go with the Braavosi, I think. He seems like a better 'spy' type. If we want a smuggler in future, though, we know where to go.
>>
>>25225980
Lymorian all the way as what we need is someone who is a master of infiltration.

Though I have to say the smugglers do have some promise and I don't suppose we could hire both of them?
>>
>>25226051
I think it was a one-or-the-other deal, sadly, otherwise I'd go for both too.

Use the smuggler to get the Braavosi into enemy territory, and then he uses his skills to get the info he needs, then use the smugglers to get him back out again.
>>
Do we actually have need of a smuggler? I'd say at the moment the Braavosi is far more useful to us
>>
>>25225990
>>25225995
>>25226018
>>25226028
Bringing the Braavosi into your fold, you instruct Lymorian to prepare his belongings for shipping to High Harrock. He performs the most ridiculous bow you've ever seen, making you wonder how a man's spine could even bend like that. You decide not to question it, as the Braavosi would likely have a whole new tale to weave and you're quickly running out of time. The melee is rapidly approaching.

>You can choose to do something else before the melee if you wish but there is a chance you'll be late. Is there anything you wish to do beforehand?
>>
>>25226115
I had the same plan in mind and that is why I was wondering if there was a "both" choice.

>>25226139

Nope. Onwards to the Melee!
>>
>>25226139
Nope, let's go to the melee. We can't let our son look out to the stands, and not see us cheering for his victory.

Make sure to pick up the wife and Katrin, I'm sure his little sister will want to cheer for her brother.
>>
>>25226139
Onwards to the Melee!
>>
>>25226139

Let's get ready to rumble!
>>
>>25226184
Finally, you arrive at the central square of Grimarbour shortly before the melee is scheduled to begin. Maester Ralion is there by the sidelines with many assistants to aid him in tending to the wounded; there are even a pair of Silent Sisters kneeling and praying, in the event of death. One person died during the joust but this is a far more lethal and dangerous event. There is likely to be at least one fatality this day and the crowd will simply be screaming for more. This is not jousting, this is not a test of specialised skill. This is true combat.

You spot Deyya sitting beside her daughter and the Egen family, nervously gnawing her lip as she watches the distant figure of Brock clad in a yellow tabard and brigantine, with an unfamiliar green sash of silk tied about his belt. Your wife is clearly worried about your son's safety but then there's the servant at your side, clearing his throat and bowing.

"My honourable Lord Harrock, Lord Benedar Belmore extends his sincere request for you to join him and his other lordly companions in the observation of this tournament. May I ask what your response is?"

>Stay with family?
>Join the other lords?

>Also, how much detail would you like me to put into the melee? As you're not participating as a character, a lot of it will be me writing out scenes with you contributing little input. So do you want every bloody little detail, do you want me to prioritise certain characters over others or do you want me to skip some of the matches and only mention important details?
>>
>>25226327
>an unfamiliar green sash of silk tied about his belt
Oh shit did he get a favor from Egen's daughter?

And just focusing on certain characters (Lord Royce, Brock, Ser Lyn) should be fine.
>>
>>25226327

Also family
>>
>>25226327
Hmm... I'm torn. It'd do us more good to be with the Lords, but with our wife worrying about Brock, she will almost certainly appreciate our presence. We could also talk to Egen's wife, see if we can get her to tell him to let Brock marry his daughter.

As for the input thing... I'd say prioritise the characters we give a damn about, like Ser Banton (our new sworn sword), Bronze Yohn, Ser Belmore (Lord Belmore's brother), Ser Lyn, and Brock.

I assume, then, that we won't be choosing what moves Brock makes? It'd be too complicated in mass combat, I bet, and you know how he'd act better than we would.

That is what we want, but our eyes need to be on the prize so to speak, we need to know what Benedar has cooking, and to know, we need to watch. And also, if he does do anything to fuck with Brock, we need to be nearby so we can plant a knife in his throat.
>>
>>25226610
Good point, I agree. Give our wife a kiss, tell her why we need to be with the rest of the lords, and then go over there.

I sort of agree with this. As much as we love our family, this is politics, and we need to be seen with the rest of the lords, if only to hear what they're talking about as they plot against us.

You find yourself sitting amongst the lords - Lord Benedar Belmore, Lord Loras Egen, Lord Alesandor Saul and Lord Jon Lynderly. The mummer, the bravo, the watcher and the snake and you as well, the hangman. As usual, they seem to be trading bets and small talk, basic banter and such. It's also the perfect position to see how they react to losses and victories. Although he is still spending many golden dragons, the Mummer of Strongsong is definitely not smiling, his mind clearly on his crippled son. Perhaps there's some humanity in him after all.

"Lord Artys. Care to join us for a gamble?"

>First Match: Red vs Blue
>Reds win; Lynderly and Egen both betting 100.
>Blues win; Belmore betting 100.
>Terrance Lynderly will be first to fall; Belmore betting 100 for, Lynderly betting 100 against.
>Bronze Yohn remains standing; Egen, Belmore and Saul betting 100, Lynderly betting 100.

>Will you join in at all?
>>
>>25226856
No one insulted what you wanted to do. That is poor form.
Both have ups and downs, that is why it is a decision.
>>
>>25226931
No gambling. Just sit, and be steel. Listen, observe, and make Belmore look like an idiot every time he addresses us.
>>
>>25226931
We're not here to bet on the lives of men, when some might die. Blood money isn't my idea of fun, gentlemen.

>>

Refusing to bet, you sit back and listen to the men mutter and chatter. Lord Egen is a babbling sycophant, Lord Belmore is a mocking fool, Lord Lynderly is a sharp-tongued liar and Lord Saul is almost as quiet as you are. It's hardly pleasant company at all but from this position, you can see their reactions. Paying them little heed, you watch as the first round begins.

The match between those wearing red and those wearing blue is the most unbalanced. What hope is there for those who face Yohn Royce in ground combat? Wearing that infamous bronze platemail of his all covered in old runes, it is said that he is impervious to all harm while in that armour. Armed with a large shield and a great mace, he is a slow but unstoppable giant. As for Ser Banton? Covered in chainmail and armed with a long, slender spear his stance is that of a common infantrymen, carefully guarding the left flank of his group. He's hardly as impressive a figure as the Castellan of the Eyrie, but he's enough.

The battle begins and those wearing blue immediately disperse, circling about the red group for any sign of weakness or opening. Yet Bronze Yohn maintains order in his ranks, roaring commands and keeping his group in a tight formation, locked together in a bristling wall of shields. The crowd quickly becomes impatient as the blue team hovers and dances about, looking for any method of attack. The roaring and jeering of the masses suddenly transforms into a wild cheer of elation as finally, one of the Belmore knights rushes in to try and run Bronze Yohn through, aiming at an exposed joint in his shoulder.
>>
>>25227076
I like this, heh.
>>
>>25227113
>one of the Belmore knights rushes in to try and run Bronze Yohn through, aiming at an exposed joint in his shoulder.

Well, I guess we know who is going to die first then.

And it isn't Bronze Yohn.
>>
>>25227193
>>25227113
Almost effortlessly, the bronze lord raises his shield to deflect the blow and smashes at the knight with his heavy mace, denting the shield and then shattering it with a second blow. Other warriors in blue join the fight, a Braavosi leaping forward to try and assault Ser banton only to be kept at bay with many jabs of the spear. It's an odd dance, with the water dancer far too agile to be struck but too far away to land a blow against the hedge knight. Even when he does, his blades only bounce off of Banton's shield. As for the Belmore knight? He trades blows with Bronze Yohn, only to find himself being worn away, his armour battered and tattered to useless pieces. Eventually after one strike too many, the warrior simply falls, barely leaving a mark on Yohn Royce's armour.

The rest of the fight is much the same. The red team is a meat grinder, slowly forcing its way through their opponents and denying any opportunity of attack. Of course, one or two of them fall, the weakest links. The rest endure. Eventually the only blue survivor is a young squire, his leather armour covered with many serpents engraved into its surface – and he simply forfeits, too terrified to dare attack, much to the laughter of the crowds and the combined shame and relief of Lord Lynderly. The wounded are dragged away, to have their injuries tended or their dead bodies blessed. It's difficult to tell from where you're sitting.

>Red Team Wins. Their composition for the final match is as follows:
>Ser Banton of No House
>Lord Yohn of House Royce
>Ser Andar of House Royce
>Ser Boyn, Sworn to House Coldwater
>Laamir of Qohor, Endorsed by Lord Palfrey of House Badics
>>
>>25227230
Great showing by Ser Banton. Hopefully he'll leave this place on our side.
>>
>>25227269
He's already agreed to serve our house for 7 years.

We'll have plenty of time to ensure he actually wants to stay during that time.
>>
>>25227230

I'll take things that are entirely unsurprising for 100 Alex.

In other news, good to see our new knight in good form.
>>
>>25227230
It shows that Ser Banton is a team player, and knows his role. This is good.

After the second fight, we should have Ser Banton announce his new allegiance to our House, so at least one person from our House is in the final.

I'm starting to get worried that Brock might try to take Bronze Yohn on, and get smacked down for his trouble... though the idea of Ser Lyn Corbray and Bronze Yohn fighting it out is sending shivers down my spine.

But yea, there's no way the Red Team can't win this, I'm afraid.
>>
>>25227314
Oh, sweet. I must've missed that. Thanks for clearing it up for me.
>>
>>25227326
Yea, we sorted it last session. We just decided not to have him declare until the final, in case the Belmore lot tried to kill him.
>>
>>25227321

I suspect our son will try if he makes it to the next round. And it will likely be a good effort, though a losing one. It would do him so good to have the sense knocked into him and drive him to improve.
>>
>>25227321
Hmm, I think it'd look a bit odd for a man with No House to suddenly declare his intentions halfway through a competition.
>>
>>25227360

Odd or a statement towards the prestige of our House?
>>
>>25227357
Losing to Yohn Royce, but doing pretty well during the effort, would be a huge success.
>>
>>25227230
Turn to Ser Lynderly and pat him on the shoulder. "There's no shame is conceding defeat when it is truly inevitable, and nothing can be gained from fighting on regardless. Your son is clever, no need to fight five against one."
>>
As the contestants of the next match prepare themselves, more bets are placed down.

>Second Match: Green vs Yellow
>Green Team Wins; Lynderly, Egen and Belmore betting 100.
>Yellow Team Wins; Saul betting 200.
>Lord Palfrey Badics causes most casualties, Belmore betting 100 for, Saul betting 100 against.

>Any bets you wish to place? Also, roll 3d6. I'll accept the second roll.

The match between green and yellow is somewhat different. Ser Lyn is as brilliant and shining as ever, arrogant enough to not wear a helmet and let his hair flow free instead – enough to send many noble ladies and common girls alike swooning and screaming their affections respectively, not that he pays any heed. The bachelorhood of the Corbray trio is an eternal mystery – how are such attractive men unmarried and without children, or even bastards? Your son is far more impressive, hardly as incredible a sight as the good knight. Wearing the barely fitting brigantine and a lobster pot helmet while carrying a hefty mace, he's quite the odd figure. They murmur amongst themselves, preparing themselves for the coming fight.

And when it finally arrives and the battle is underway, the first thing that Brock and his companions do is charge. A shrill scream from Lady Delayis, a thunderous roar from your boy and wild cries from the rest, excluding Lord Coldwater and Ser Lyn. Both remain in cold silence as they stampede towards the enemy line, many of the green fighters scattering and getting out of the way as quickly as they can. Unfortunately, a few of the more experienced are just a little too slow and your son Brock, he lands the first strike of this fight.

Swinging the heavy metal sphere on the end of his flail towards the trembling figure's shield, he allows the head of the flail to simply smash through the wood, leaving behind only splintered fragments as though it was never there. The sheer force of the metal is enough to leave a colossal dent in the young fighter's armour and send him flat on to his back, no longer moving. The sound is beyond description, melding the cracking of bone and the deformation of metal. There's a brief moment of hesitation from your lad as he stares at what he has just done, but it's quickly interrupted by a blunt sword smashing into his helmet. A nasty dent is left behind but this only seems to anger your son.

This campaign of raw aggression is an effective one, with many green fighters descending; yet those more experienced upon the yellow find themselves drop as well, at the hands of Lord Palfrey Badics. The mercenary lord hacks and slashes and even stabs with a bastard sword in one hand and a fencing blade in the other in a crude, wild style, not doing anything to avoid killing his contestants. Eventually he ends up in a duel with Ser Lyn, with his crazed and alien method of combat contrasting against the more elegant, tradition style of the Corbray knight. Yet they are easily equal to one another, neither able to break the other down entirely.

Yet such a conflict does not last forever. Very soon the numbers of the green team are whittled down to nothing with only Palfrey left. The bloody-haired lord receives a sword smashing into his side from Delayis and a shield smashing into his face from Coldwater. Yet it is Brock's flail that lands the felling blow, slamming into the lord's hip. The only thing preventing the bone from completely shattering is the armour that lies between the flesh and the metal sphere. This attack sends the Lord of Moonsgrey slumping into the floor, helmet striking the earth. He does not stir. The crowd roars for the blood that was shed but Brock seems to have an uncertain, confused look on his face and Ser Lyn an extremely aggravated one.

However they may feel, they are soon to be fighting again, against the team led by Bronze Yohn himself. There is little hope there.

>Yellow Team Wins. Their composition for the final match is as follows:
>Brock Harrock, Squire to Ser Morys, Sworn to House Harrock
>Lord Royce of House Coldwater
>Ser Lyn of House Corbray
>Lady Delayis, Sworn to House Belmore

Red against yellow, five against four, defence against offence. Bronze Yohn against Ser Lyn. That's the whispered match, one that gets hearts pumping and the crowds eager for blood. Many names are being chanted but Brock Harrock is not amongst them. The teams assemble themselves and prepare themselves after cleaning their weapons and beating out the dents in their armour, getting new shields and other important things. Although the joust is a far more noble and skilful contest, the melee is attracting far larger crowds. It's a swarm, it's a hive of dirty smallfolk and they are loving it.

Meanwhile, more bets are being made by some lords who are growing increasingly irate and others who are almost entirely serene.

>Third Match; Red vs Yellow
>Red Team Wins; Belmore, Egen and Lynderly bet 200.
>Yellow Team Wins; Saul bets 100.
>Ser Lyn will cause most casualties; Egen bets 100 for, Belmore bets 200 against.

One hundred on yellow. Even Saul blinks at this, giving you a wary look. It seems that even he doesn't expect a victory out of this, he's simply entertaining a bet for the sake of it. After all, he has already made so much off the idiocy of the others lords - why not spend a little to amuse them? Placing his thoughts aside, the watchful lord sits back to well, watch.

And without further ado, the match begins.

Polar opposites to each other, both teams do exactly what they did in their previous matches. Why change something that works? Lady Delayis, Lord Coldwater, Ser Lyn and Brock the Squire all charge forward, this time without the wild screaming. Intimidation is not a tactic that will work here. In return, the shieldwall of Ser Andar, Lord Yohn, Ser Banton, Ser Boyn and Laamir remains strong and unmoving, wooden circles locked together. The unstoppable force and the immovable object. The Seven themselves seem to hold their breath as the two teams draw nearer to one another, waiting for them to finally clash.

Brock's already proven quite skilled at disarming well trained knights, and even Bronze Yohn would be hard pressed to win without a weapon.
>>

Eh, the madam was a better choice. We can't trust any of these spies, but at least with the madam we know that and are only paying gold and silver for information.
>>
>>25228329
the issue being that we only gain information related to the city she's in, where the faceless one can travel and recruit an actual spy network.
>>
You fucking idiots. Our wife tells us two things: Don't bet and we need a stablehand. What do you fuckers do? You come back with a Braavosi clown who wants a marriage with a whore from across the sea and you're throwing away coin to troll the other lords.

What the fuck.
>>
>>25228329

Eh maybe. She would have stayed here though and that wouldn't help with the biggest issue we seem to have.

At least with the Bravo we can use his "teaching" sessions as him relaying information to use.
>>
>>25228329
i tend to agree with you, but, hey. cooperative quest. i'm sure whatever happens, plasma will make it entertaining as fuck,
>>
>>25228345

The stablehand is something we can handle at home and the betting is going to end in a plus. We're doing fine this time.
>>
>>25228345
Even though we're going to lose this bet, I'm pretty sure we still made 50 dragons.

...But yeah why didn't you guys get a stablehand.
>>

But he's clearly not, and never was, a faceless man.

>>
>>25228376
She'll likely be upset about us ditching her to sit with the lords too. That will just be an extra detail for her to get pissy at us about.
>>
At least we aren't betting wantonly on everything. Just on those that are ours. We show our faith in our man and son so other Lords may not whisper otherwise.

The stablehand thing is sorta eh. We don't greatly need him and if we do, we have many of our own men already experienced with our horses to do so.
>>
>>25228376
>>25228394
She's been pretty warm with us so far, but yeah I think we should have spurned Belmore's invite and sat with our family.
>>
>>25228394
You'll want to loose the trip, man. Plasma ignores trips.

And eh, we're up 50 Gold Dragons, so she can't bitch that much. It's not like we've lost money.
>>
>>25228345
We'll do better getting a good stablehand...

On Land
We're on an island, we want a stablehand used to dealing with Rounsey's and Mules, the Mounts of the Mountain. Better found on land
>>
>>25228367
He proved himself a master of disguise right in front of us, which is good enough from my standpoint.

Master of disguise goes in, recruits a spy or two from inside the city he's traveled to and goes out, never the same face twice, never getting caught.

The person we recruited themselves aren't going to mean much as an individual, it's the network they'd be able to create and maintain that's important, and he seems like the best bet to be able to create a proper network.
>>
Lord Coldwater reaches the line first, meeting his liege lord head on. The reward for such reckless behaviour is a spearhead in his side and a mace smashing against his shield, the first strike deforming the wood and the second shattering it entirely. Then Ser Lyn arrives, diving forward with cat-like grace and slipping his sword between the shields, the tip of the blade sliding into the belly of Laamir. The Qohorik responds with a gaping maw, his mouth twitching uselessly as he sways desperately. Then Delayis charges in with a shriek of her own, ripping into the side of the shield wall and burying a sword tip in Ser Banton's shoulder. But the one who breaks the wall is Brock, with that great flail his hands. Rushing forward with all of the strength and might in his body, he brings the head of the flail slamming into Ser Boyn's shield, obliterating it and knocking the poor fool backwards.

Suddenly the battle is divided into two, with Delayis and Lyn fighting Andar, Banton and Laamir while Brock and Royce face Boyn and Yohn. Slamming the flat of her blade against the spearman's helmet, the wrathful lady quickly knocks Ser Banton to the floor only to receive a hammer to her stomach. Her entire body arches in agony and she crumples to the floor, her armour deformed by the blow. Twisting his blade and wrenching it out, the knight of Corbray quickly puts an end to the suffering of Laamir leaving the poor fool to bleed out on the ground, turning to combat Andar. Easily parrying a sword blow with the haft of his weapon, Brock smashes the head of his flail into Boyn a second time and then a third, blasting the wind out of him while Bronze Yohn renders Coldwater unconscious with a clean blow to his armoured head.

Only two men from either team remain standing, Brock and Lyn and Andar and Yohn.

Your son and your liege turn to face each other, weapons readied.
>>
>>25228361
>>25228403

Yes, because we can afford to ship a whore from across the Narrow Sea over here. I'm sure our wife will absolutely love that. I promise, this is going to cost us more money and get us in more trouble than it's worth.
>>
>>25228403
You raise a good point. If we want to start raising people into positions of power, we should be doing so from our own lands. We have a healthy well of potential recruits, and they're more likely to be loyal than anyone we recruit from Grimarbour.

That said, the kennelmaster should be fine. But this Bravossi is bad news.

Bronze Yohn is the first to strike, clobbering your boy about the head with his mace and leaving a second dent in the helmet, stunning the lad for but a moment and giving the lord of Runestone the chance to land a second blow and a third, each strike of his mace stripping away the metal places in the brigantine. Eventually recovering, your boy launches a furious assault in return, roaring at the top of his lungs. Each blow forces the bronze lord to step back but he only steps forth again, swaying this way and that like a great oak tree in the wind, impossible to uproot. Your boy even manages to shatter his shield, reducing it nothing but his armour hardly seems to shift at all. Perhaps the myths are true; perhaps Yohn Royce is invulnerable.

For every blow that he gives, Brock receives one in return and unlike his rival he cannot survive them so easily. The metal of his armour screamed, pieces of the brigantine falling away from the constant rain of blows provided by the mace. You can almost hear the crack of ribs fracturing over the crowd and you can definitely see your son's helmet shatter from a third strike. Bronze Yohn does not need to land devastating strikes, he is simply wearing your son down, whittling him away to nothing and there's nothing he can do in exchange. The desperation is evident on the face of your boy as he lashes out and again and again...

… until with a roar of frustration, he casts the flail aside.

The boy deserves to become a man today, in all ways.
>>
>>25228754
Oh yeah. Sorry. Haha, still, takes guts to fisticuffs a guy with a mace.
>>
The crowd does not how to react. Some laugh, some roar for blood, others are too confused for words. Yet all becomes clear as Brock lunge forward to grasp the gnarled old Yohn Royce, grasping his mace arm with a vice-like grip while other reaches up to grasp at his opponent's helmet. In return, he receives a bronze gauntlet to the face. But your piggish son is too stubborn to give up so easily. With a loud whining grunt of exertion, he rips the helmet away from Bronze Yohn's skull, exposing his head for all to see. As a reward for his effort, Brock receives another savage grunt as the lord tries to free himself and escape from the grapple.

Refusing to relent, the heir of House Harrock returns the favour, forcing his gauntleted fist into Bronze Yohn's jaw, once, even twice before Lord Royce finally rips himself away from Brock with a brutal shove and knocking the boy off of his feet with a mace blow to the head. Stunned and on the brink of consciousness, your lad slams into the earth and flails about, seeking some sort of way to fight back as the bronze lord advances. But there's no weapon, nothing. Pinning your lad's gut beneath an armoured foot, your liege raises his other to slam it into your boy's thick head, his face a grim and blood-stained mask with a ruined nose and a misplaced jaw.

It is enough of a distraction. Bronze Yohn had no way of seeing Ser Lyn as he defeated his son, he had no way of noticing him stride over and he had no way of avoiding the flat of the sword that crashed into the back of his head. The sound of metal meeting flesh and bone seems to echo and without another sound, the invincible lord crumples and slumps to the earth beside your son.
>>

>implying he isn't just going to drink and eat it off

You obviously don't think very highly of one of the best knights in the Vale.
>>
>>25229029
Really I think we need to get Brock more tactically involved in the defense of our homeland. We need to groom him in the running of the house, at least militarily before we let him out of our sight.
>>
>>25229062
>implying he isn't just going to drink, eat and fuck it off

Last thread we had discussed taking him to a brothel. In fact, regardless of how sweet he is on Egen's girl I think we should do it anyway. That kind of stuff like not being a virgin is important to a kid his age.
>>
Do /tg/ threads auto-delete after 500 posts? Just wondering, in case I should be setting up the archive now (since this thread has more posts in it than damn near any Harrock thread has ever had).

>>25229089
Yea, we need to make him a proper man today, both blooded and bedded.
>>
>>25229089
I'd say no. While yes, many do feel that way, I don't read Brock as that sort.
>>
I'll raise the point of House Harrock having problems with bastards again while talks of brothels appear.

Just a point of case guys.
>>
Why do I get the image of a hockey fight when Brock throws down the flail

Must be a 'gloves off, time to go' thing
>>
You're the first to break the silence that follows with your applause but others join in, roaring and cheering for Ser Lyn, the last man standing. With a massive bruise swelling on the side of his skull, Brock Harrock pushes himself to his feet, swaying and stumbling while Ser Lyn moves to assist Lord Yohn in a show of chivalry, trying to rouse the groaning man. A vicious blow like that was only enough to keep that great oak tree that is Bronze Yohn out for a few moments. His face is easily as swollen and wrecked as that of Brock, stained with blood and sweat. While the knight of Corbray is struggling to heft the bronze lord's weight and help him to his feet, you turn to speak to Benedar.
>>25228932
The glare that you receive in return is one full of fury and hatred as the man quivers with rage, your comment digging deep into the lord. The next words that come aren't snide or petty but instead radiate genuine anguish and loss. You even see the trace of tear as the fat lord rages.
"Your son isn't a fucking cripple. It was your words to Yohn that made my boy a useless wretch for the rest of his life, not even able to walk. I swear to you that I shall pray to the Seven every night and every day that your boy suffers the same fate. So you will have to live with a failure as your heir. So you--"

The sound of a gauntlet striking flesh rings out through the air once more and you turn to face the centre of the square to see Ser Lyn reeling back in shock and the wounded Bronze Yohn seizing his sword, his entire body quivering in anger.

"That was a fight between me and the boy. You had no bloody right. Get over here, Harrock. I am not done with you yet."

Once more, silence reigns. There's only the sound of Bronze Yohn stomping towards your son, blade in hand and with burning fury etched into his face. Brock is simply standing there, agape and frozen to the spot.

No one is doing anything.

What are you doing?
>>
>>25229102

>>
>>25229130

Holy shit, Bronze Yohn is the man.

What! WHAT! No!

The melee is finished!
>>
>>25229130

oh god oh god oh god oh god

Let's run down to the barrier of the melee pit to see what's going on. If we need to intervene we should be ready to leap in and do what we can

>>
>>25229148
Actually I'm pretty sure bastards are traditional, and they've worked fine until like... less than a year ago.

>>25229174

Of fuck, cancel my vote to interrupt. Rush down to the edge of the ring, but don't interrupt unless Yohn outright attacks Brock.
>>
>>25229186
That would be fucking brilliant.

I second this. If it looks like he's going to strike for Brock, shout his name and throw him our blade. If it looks like he's being knighted... well... don't throw him the sword.
>>
>>25229130
Marching down to that field, interrupting the two. "That's enough for today, Yohn. You held the superior position against my son at the end. However, if you do want to fight a Harrock, you'll find one right here."
>>
>>25229206
>>25229205

Sounds about right
>>
>>25229155
If you seriously think that, you're a naive fool.

Yell out for Brock to get his flail!!!
>>
>>25229130
Watch silently. Do absolutely nothing, nothing at all.
>>
>>25229130

A Loud 'Until the Last Ridge' to Brock before turning back to Benedar

"My son and heir has every right to be in that ring with Ser Yohn as he has earned it through the blood in his veins, the sweat on his brow, and the tears he has gone through in his training. maybe before you play your tricks you can have a thought or a care to what can happen, Lord Benedar. However, I share in your loss, as do we all"
>>
I think if Yohn kills Brock it would be within character to hop the bannister and attack him.

>>25229214

>>25229208
I dunno, weilding fucking Valyrian steel against a blunt tourney sword?

As awesome as that is, it's a bad idea.
>>
>>25229233
I think we're antagonized him enough.

Lets just focus on what is happening with our son and Yohn.
>>
>>25229236
I agree. But I doubt that will happen. Yohn Royce is not known to be a sore loser. Just watch patiently.
>>
>>25229253

Agreed on this account. We do not need to shame our son with unfair advantage.

Let's wait and see how this plays out.
>>
>>25229233
>A Loud 'Until the Last Ridge' to Brock

This should definitely happen though.
>>
>>25229256

He pretty much just cursed us and Brock
>>
>>25229130

We should intervene, call for calm and respite from the fighting, their blood is still burning hot from the fight let them clam and think for moment.
>>
>>25229233
Nah, fuck Belmore. We don't even need to dignify that with a response. The situation in front of us demands our full attention.
>>
>>25229233
We already got him to drop his face. No need to say anything else.
>>
>>25229253
well if he does attack then he's being a faggot because the tourney has finished. Therefore I;d say Brock would be well within his rights to wield our sword in his defense
>>
>>25229253
The tourney is over, if Yohn attacks our son it's completely unprovoked, and he has every right to defend himself by every means at his disposal.

In fact in front of this many witnesses, it'd be almost certain to result in Yohns execution for murder.
>>
>>25229236
Are you kidding? Absolutely.
>>
>>25229265

And we do not need to stoop to his level. His curses are in grief and us poking issue. We have said all that needs to be said.

However, >>25229263 needs to happen.

Can we all agree that we're knighting Brock (or try to get Ser Lyn to do it, since they won together)?

>>
>>25229299
This, but we need to get closer to the barrier in case we need to intervene quickly.
>>
>>25229311
This.
>>
>>25229299
It has my vote.

I'm just worried that our shout will provoke Brock into defending himself when Yohn's only intention is to knight him.
>>
>>25229297

We are not personally knighting Brock nor asking for it. If it happens it happens. To do otherwise screams vanity.

>>25229288

Bronze lives to see another day and is our lord liege presently. He won't be creating any misconduct that could result in his head.
>>
>>25229306
I'm pretty sure we wear Ambition all the time. Swords were as much fashion as they were warfare back in medieval times and the same applies to ASoIF
>>
>>25229306

It's a melee, there are bound to be weapons on racks, weapons on the ground, weapons in the hands of our newest sworn sword, etc.
>>
>>25229306
Probably just a dagger, but, if he does it (still don't think he will) it won't matter, we should still go for it, stupid as that would be.
>>
>>25229297
Yeah, Ser Lyn will not be working for us after this. Nor do I really want him to.
>>
You think your son is about to piss himself, even as you storm down the stands to the edge of the ring where that final match was fought. Your call of your family's words does little to sooth him, barely even getting him to look in your direction. The bronze armoured giant offers you a glare, a wordless demand to shut your mouth. At long last Yohn Royce finally stops before the boy, extending a hand wrapped in bronze metal reaching out to grasp his shoulder with an iron grasp. By this point, Brock is gulping in air like a fish, on the verge of sobbing in terror. This is not longer a fight. The melee is over and Bronze Yohn is his liege, his liege with a blade in his hand and a face full of fury and anger.

Yet the facade of rage suddenly melts away into a jester's grin, a demented expression on a face as brutalised and ruined as Bronze Yohn's. Bellowing loudly with laughter, he claps your quivering child on the shoulder with his hand, causing the fat fool's body to twitch and spasm in surprise.

"Kneel, lad."
>>
>>25229323
The guy is basically bursting with fury, I seriously doubt he is going to knight the lad.

>>25229319
It would be unseemly for us to leave right now. If anything happens, its not like Yohn is going to run away from us. We wait and watch.
>>

Bronze Yohn's voice bellows throughout the entire central square, carrying through the air with natural authority even as his sword rests on the shoulder of the kneeling boy. These are words that you are familiar with.

"In the name of the Warrior I charge you to be brave. In the name of the Father I charge you to be just. In the name of the Mother I charge you to defend the young and innocent. In the name of the Maid I charge you to protect all women..."

The commoners are watching on in shock. Even some of the lords are open-mouthed with surprise. Looking down towards your wife, you notice she is crying. Tears of joy, you hope. The words continue and the responsibilities mount on Brock's shoulders, his quivering and shuddering coming to a stop. By the time Lord Yohn Royce utters the last sentence, his body is as strong and resolute as iron.

"... Arise, Ser Brock, a knight of the Seven."

>Brothel

The melee is over. We need to leave Grimarbour ASAP and get back to our lands. Don't forget, they had a bit of trouble while we were gone, and we HAVE to get back. That is more important than basking in this epicness.

>Seeing if we can repair Brock's relationship with Ser Lyn.
>Get Brock a fist-shaped mace
>>
>>25229675
Shit you're right, that's like 3 wealth we just landed? Not even including any prizes third place might grant us.

So:
1) Rebuild tower
2) Land Ser Morys there ( he's unlikely to have heirs so in a few years we may be able to pass it on to another loyal knight. Maybe Ser Tenry)
3) Send Belmore that fuck-you letter

I think we were planning to build a mill or something after that.
>>
>>25229654

>Bask

yes

>encourage Brock basking

yes, have him spend some time with Lorenna as well

>Bro it up with Yohn

Yeah but no. Remember we still need to entertain him on the story of the Qohorik

>Ignore Belmore and Ser Lyn

Yes, but we do need to talk to Lord Badics with the latest news of his archers. Talk to Ser Lyn as well and offer condolences/congrats and thank him for his time with our boy since I don't think Brock would be where he is today if not for Ser Lyn pushing him

>brothel

I'm not sold on it personally. Best just see if the lad wants too or not.
>>
>>25229691
>Brothel/Celebrations with Brock
>Spend time with Family
>Bro it up with Royce (as well as meeting with him and Egen)
>Try to repair relationship between Brock and Ser Lyn (though I doubt it after what Bronze Yohn did)
>Get Brock a fist-shaped mace, commission a set of armour, and reinforced gauntlets
>Get back to High Harrock ASAP
>Deal with shit that happened at home
>SPEND DAT GOLD AND EXPAND, BABY!
>>
>>25229687
Lord Belmore was practically frothing at the mouth back then. We'll need to be on our gaurd on the way back to our lands, Ser Boros will help us there. Perhaps have Ser Tenry escort us home when we get to Egen's land, congratulate him on a job well-done.
>>
>>25229735
I agree wholeheartedly with everything but the Ser Brock and Ser Lyn situation. They never liked each other and even though >>25229733
is right and Brock wouldn't be where he is now without him, Ser Lyn is a cold motherfucker and if we keep him around it's likely he'll ice someone.
>>
>>25229718
>2) Land Ser Morys there ( he's unlikely to have heirs so in a few years we may be able to pass it on to another loyal knight. Maybe Ser Tenry)
I support this. Ser Morys beat two knights half his age, so he should live his last years with dignity as a landed knight.
>>
>>25229639
A played as a Blackfyre pocket king beyond the wall having taken over the Thenns.

The war happened, and the Queen, princess and her children all ended up at my doorstep, Rheager was still killed.
A few days later, Barrisan The Bold showed up next~
It was awesome.
>>
>>25229784
But we have a means to repair their relationship: they won TOGETHER. I just think that we should at least be okay with one Corbray, since we fucked up his older bro a few threads ago.
>>
>>25229790

I'm glad so many people are on board with that. It really does nothing but expands our power and our Knight deserves it for everything he has done.

Plus we are now coming home with not one, but TWO KNIGHTS.
>>
>>25229718
We get our 100 Gold (1 Wealth) back, we get 300 Gold (3 Wealth) from the losers in the bet, we get ? Gold (? Wealth) for coming third in the melee, and we have to take into account that Royce might buy our son his armour and steed.

Definitely this - we'll have to be careful going through Belmore and Egen lands to return home. I think we might basically have to pull our military out of Egen's lands, depending how things go in the meeting with us, Royce and Egen.

Now that Brock is a knight, though, and has shown what Harrocks are made of, Egen might be more willing to wed his daughter to him now... though now I'm wondering if we can't do a fuck tonne better than just Egen's daughter...

We should aspire to more important houses offering their daughter for marriage.

These, including not bothering with Ser Lyn. He's more likely to want to kill Brock after Bronze Yohn showing him up, rather than make friends again.

We have one of the best knights in the Vale as our son, there is nothing we cannot do.

>>25229818
Lyn technically won the melee, and then Bronze Yohn got up and bitch slapped him for interrupting his fight with Brock. Lyn isn't going to forgive Yohn Royce or Brock for that slight any time soon. We might as well write him off now.
>>
>>25229818
Yeah but even though Lyn technically won, Bronze Yohn beat him into the ground for being a prick, and Brock pretty much got all the attention.

So just thank him for all his hard work as a tutor, and hope we never have to deal with him again.
>>
>>25229790
>>25229820
Definitely this. Morys deserves it, for all that he has done for our House.

I only feel bad that there isn't something more we can do for him.

>>25229735
>>25229784
This too.
>>
>>25229855
>Lyn isn't going to forgive Yohn Royce or Brock for that slight any time soon.
Fuck, son, you're right. Brock and Yohn completely stole his thunder.
I keep on forgetting that Ser Lyn's arrogance is canon.
>>
>>25229888
Indeed. I can only assume that he was stunned by the punch Bronze Yohn gave him, because in any other situation, he'd have killed the men that showed him up the way that Brock and Yohn did.
>>
>>25229922
Odds are he might still try, when half the Vale isn't watching.

Best cut him loose, preferably in a way that endears us to his brother.
>>
>>25229968
Indeed - we need to keep him as far from Brock as possible, otherwise he will end up killing him in a fight.

He will not be returning back to High Harrock with us. He can't, if we want Brock to live.
>>
>>25229989
>>25229968

Maybe something to talk to Bronze about?
>>
>>25230003
Good idea, he might be able to help. Brock seems to have endeared himself to Royce, which can only work to our advantage.

We basically now have one of the most powerful Houses in the Vale as our ally. This should prove very useful.
>>
>>25230003
>>25230025
Definitely, nice plan anons.
>>
>>25230003
Now that Royce really fucking likes us, we should talk more about potentially marrying our daughter to one of his sons.

That would net us an alliance through marriage, and Belmore will fucking rue the day he tried it on against us if we have that in our pocket.
>>
>>25229855

Oh man Ser Lyn, will be raging almost s hard as
Belmore, he told us that Brock could never be a knight and he was just knighted by the most respected Lord and knight of the Vale with half its population as witness. And tomorrow no one will remember that he beat Bronze Yohn everyone will be talking about how the previously unknown heir of Harrock fought Bronze Yohn and how their their fight devolved into a fisticuffs match!

Ser Lyn Corbray may as well not being there at all!
>>
Seriously, all the bad stuff that has happened to us over the past few threads - Morys being crippled, us losing our joust, Egen potentially going back on our alliance, people generally not liking us much...

All of that was just blown away by this thread.

Fucking A guys, and nice one Plasma!

>>25230076
Might be pushing it too hard, I think a ward from a future child (as we discussed before), or even just encouraging our daughter to spend time at his court, would go over much better.
>>
>>25230095
I know! Lyn was entirely overshadowed by Yohn and Brock's fight, and then slapped down when he tried to make himself the star, and then spat on when Yohn knighted Brock before everyone.

He is going to hate our entire House, there's nothing we can do about it.

You're right with Belmore too. He's just been shown up by our son being knighted by the Castellan of the Eyrie, the most respected knight in the Vale, and his current liege (until Lord Arryn returns, may the Seven bless him), the same man who crippled his son and heir.

He is going to hate us even more. He won't rest now until House Harrock is razed to the ground.
>>
>>25230134
We had basically got it so that Katrin might be able to marry Royce's second or third son, I believe. Brock managing this will aid our efforts in this area more than he knows.
>>
When we're back at home, just send Ser Lyn back to his family with our gratitude and gifts. He, after all, won the melee and gave us a Knight to match Yohn Royce.

Officially Ser Morys squire, but we can't part on bad blood.

I guess we should really take stock of our defenses and all possible avenues of approach for the Belmores. Our forces are too few to face them in open battle, we will have to rely on guerrilla and delaying tactics. Perhaps even get some clans riled up.

oops

Anyway...feels good to say Ser Brock, don't it?
>>
>>25230202
The ward thing was with Lord Coldwater, not Yohn Royce. Our wife had basically organised that, if we wanted it, Royce would have been alright with Katrin marrying, whilst not his first son, but one of his sons.
>>
>>25230151
Saying she should spend some time over there is a good way to ease the proposal later on, and we know that she's good at winning people over to like her. Hell, by the end odds are Yohn will pushing the proposal.

So I say propose her going over for an extended visit rather than an out-and-out marriage proposal. The latter is too forward, and might even wreck what we have if Yohn thinks we're just trying to take advantage of him.
>>
>>25230258
Except that Yohn had basically agreed to that already, if that was what we wanted.

An extended trip might not be an awful idea though, but our wife won't want that so soon after us having gone to Grimarbour.
>>
>>25230426
True. Besides, it can wait at least until we rebuild the old tower and land Ser Morys. That and raise another unit of infantry, we need to strengthen our forces before we look outside.
>>
>>25230466
Though allying with Royce through marriage would certainly make Belmore think again about invading us, as it could cause a massive incident if Royce got involved.

But yea, we could do with some more Infantry, and yea, we want to land Morys, perhaps gift him the lands we recently settled? We'll still get the income, to be fair.

And yes, we want to rebuild the old tower Belmore built on our lands, and raise a Garrison unit to hold it for us.
