Back to our regularly scheduled VALKYRIAN MERCS QUEST!

Don't know what Valkyria Chronicles is? Check it out here! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valkyria_Chronicles

You are JAGER STURMFUHRER, leader of the fledgling mercenary company DEMONS OF RANDGRIZ. In addition to fighting Imps for money and vengeance, you have your own private mission to hunt down Karla, your former fiance who sided with the Imperials and destroyed your home.

You've arrived in the Federation nation of Albion to help defend it against a possible amphibious attack. However, your boots barely hit the deck before you were assigned a mission to break up a spy ring. However, through a chain of extraordinary events, you not only smashed the spy ring apart, but also managed to capture an Imperial u-boat (mostly) intact, which you repaired and rechristened the Vergeltung.

After rooting out several Imp spy rings and fighting off an Imperial amphibious invasion by defeating their leader, Belkan Knight Sir Fleisher, you've decided that it's now time to move on to greener (or at least more profitable) pastures. You and the Demons left Albion for the besieged nation of Ustio, with new gear and squad members in tow.

Your first mission went well enough, routing a platoon of Imperial soldiers threatening the city of Valais' supply lines. Then you destroyed an Imperial superheavy artillery battery, taking pressure off the city's beleaguered defenders and giving them a chance to counterattack. Now you're in the destroyed town of Somtaw, trying to destroy Qyburn's early research, though you think you've bitten off more than you can chew. But you've found a light at the end of the tunnel.

You see a small copse of trees, possibly the last ones alive in this entire town, nestled away in a little atrium of a nearby building. I would have been impossible to spot from the ground.

"Demons, I think we've found our objective! Big round building, about seven hundred meters to the southeast!" You announce through the radio.

"Good! Because more and more of these guys are starting to show up!" Julia warns, punctuated by another boom from her cannon.

"How many?"

"Fifteen to twenty to my best guess."

"Julia, hold position. Let's finish these guys off." You say.

"Whatever you say, boss." Julia replies as her cannon roars again. Down below, you can see what was once a cafe collapse in a cloud of smoke and dust.

"We've got a pretty good vantage point up here, sir." Tarin points out. "I think me, Sam, and Artya can do better up here than on the ground."

"Good thinking, Tarin." You nod.

JAGER STURMFUHRER.

>>25208781
Stay on the roof, we're more liable to get killed on the ground because of dem cannons.
>>
>>25208781
You decide to stay up on the roof so you can get a better view of the Beasts' movements. Directly below you are Julia and Headcase along with Ramirez and Isolde, forming a rough semicircle around the lab's entrance.

Surrounding them is at least a dozen Beasts hidden in the ruins, peppering them with rifle fire. However, the Fenrir and Kilroy provide more than enough cover. However, another quick glance and you can see six more Beasts marching down the street towards the fighting.

>>
>>25209272

Headcase, Ramirez, and Isolde keeps firing on the beast in the ruins.

"Incoming Beasts from the street! Julia! Drop a round on them!" You order. "Eveybody on the roof will take care of the reinforcements. The rest of you take care of the Beasts here right now!"

Julia fires an HE round at the approaching reinforcements.

Headcase fires a shot at an entrenched enemy position.

Isolde fires her lance at another Beast.

Ramirez lets loose with his SMG.

Sam launches a frag shot at the reinforcements, while Tarin and Artya try and pick them off.

Alek takes a shot.

Unfortunately, a combination of range and cover make it tricky to make effective hits on the Beasts, with most shots missing. From what you can see, no significant damage has been done. However, Tarin and Alek score some hits on the reinforcements, knocking two of them down. The Beasts seem to hesitate for a moment, as if deciding which gunman to chase after.

The Beasts return fire, splitting it between the ground force and the roof.

>>25209746
Fortunately, the Beasts seem to be having the same problems you are. One of the Beasts manages a hit on Isolde, but her armor soaks it.

It seems there aren't any more reinforcements coming, for now at least.

We need to find a spot where we have cover and they don't. Where the objective is, is there any kind of courtyard around surrounding it? Might be a better place to hold up in.

"This position isn't defensible." You determine. Your backs are literally against the wall and there's not telling how many more Beasts are out there. It also doesn't help that they've got plenty of cover to hide behind here as well. "We're going to head straight for the objective! Full speed and don't stop for anything!"

You, Sam, Tarin, and Artya barrel down the stairs as Ramirez and Isolde throw out smoke grenades to cover the retreat. The moment you reach the door you remount your vehicles and their engines roar to life. As you move out you take some last parting shots at the Beasts.

Julia manages to score a good hit with her cannon, obliterating a Beast, while you and Ramirez manage to cut another one down with combined SMG bursts. Alek manages hit one of the Beasts in the neck, but it seems to inconvenience it more than actually hurt.

As the tanks pull away, the Beasts fire off their own parting volley.
>>
>>25210099
Thanks to the smoke, the Beasts can't draw an accurate bead on you, though one ricochets off the Fenrir's plating perilously close to your head.

700 meters isn't exactly far on a tank going full speed, and soon enough you find yourselves in front of a roughly circular building It looks to be some sort of amphitheater. Of course, the tanks can't exactly fit inside without knocking down several walls, so they'll have to be left outside.

Unlike the lab, the ground around here is mostly open. They can try sniping at you from the ruins, but they'll have to expose themselves in order to get closer. Unfortunately, you don't have a cliff at your back here to prevent flanking attacks.

>>25210174
"Alright, Tarin, Ramirez, you're with me. Artya, I assume you're coming with us?"

Artya nods.

NEVER BEEN HERE BEFORE. MAYBE GOOD LOOT INSIDE.

"That's all you think about, huh?" You sigh.

Like the lab, the theater is abandoned and in huge disrepair. You're confident that the front hall you first enter used to look rather nice, but is now dominated by rotting wood stained marble. You carefully pick your way through the ruins and rubble until you reach a set of inner doors. No doubt the ones leading the open atrium you saw.

With a bit of grunt work, you and Ramirez push the ancient doors open while Tarin and Artya move in to secure the area. You find yourself in an open air theater, and sure enough, right there on the stage, you can see the copse of trees you caught sight of earlier, jutting out of the rotting floorboards that used to be the stage.

You carefully creep down the aisles, keeping a close eye on the empty, dusty seats on either side of you, half thinking some sort of half-alive terror would suddenly leap out at you. Finally, after what seems like an eternity, you reach the stage.

You take a cautious step forward, only for the floorboard to give away beneath your foot.

"Oh shi-" You curse before Tarin and Ramirez grab you. "Careful, this place is pretty dang-"

<Moving in> Artya signs before leaping down into a hole in the stage.

"Ah damnit. Tarin, Ramirez, keep an eye on things. Yell if you see anything strange"

Tarin and Ramirez give you a clear "are you goddamn serious?" look.

"Okay, anything STRANGER than what we're in right now." You correct. You look at the dark hole Artya leaped down and take a deep breath and follow her in.

The area under the stage is dark and cramped. You need to hunch over in order to move through effectively, but you manage to catch up to Artya, who seems to have stopped in her tracks.

"Artya, what's wrong?" You walk up and see two masked and hooded figures leaning against the trees, as if they were sleeping. From the layer dust and has collected over them, you can tell they've been here for quite some time. It's then that you notice the corpses of six Beasts scattered around the area as well, dead from a various combination of gunshot, stab, and blunt trauma wounds.

Artya kneels in front of one of the masked corpses and inspects it carefully before moving on to the next one. She then hands you two notes and points to the body on the left.

Then she points to the body on the right.

I think you're really underestimating how common it was.

Basically, Pride and dignity takes a back seat to money, extra equipment and shiny knick-knacks on the battlefield. Forget the romantic shit you might have learned, nearly everyone did it when they had the opportunity to.

dude, its fucking war, soldiers did whatever they could to get an advantage over their enemies, which meant, wherever and whenever they could, they stripped the dead down to their undies for gear

when you are fighting a war, pride is not even something that enters your mind

Many games can say the same thing.

And considering this quest is more loosely based VC (using it more as a back drop) instead of 1:1 for the game... yeah. Things aren't going to be same...

"They died a warrior's death, I don't know if that means anything for your people I know many who would consider this a good way to die." You say, putting a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "We should go as soon as you've made your peace, lest we risk sharing this fate."

Artya nods and starts patting down her own parents' bodies for loot, taking their weapons, rations, ammo, and any thing else possibly valuable.

"Ummm, Artya? What are you doing...?" You blanch.

THEY DON'T NEED THEIR LOOT ANYMORE. THEY WOULD HAVE WANTED IT THIS WAY. Artya writes.

"If that's what you say." You frown, not entirely convinced.

<Incoming> She signs before tossing a metal lockbox at you.

You barely manage to catch it in time, but under the dirt and dust, all you can see the words PROPERTY OF DR. QYBURN written on it. You open it carefully, and there's a dusty old journal nestled inside.

TREATISE ON MILITARY APPLICATIONS OF RAGNITE GAS AND DERIVATIVE SUBSTANCES

You drop the journal in revulsion. You've never seen it in action, but you've heard the stories. Ragnite gas, a weapon so horrible that both the Federation and the Empire agreed it was something that could never be used again.

With trembling hands, you grab your you lighter, pick up the journal, and set it ablaze. You watch it burn and you make sure that it burns down to the very last bit of ash. The deed is done.

"Artya... let's get out of here." You mumble.

Julia's quick maneuvering of the Fenrir spoils your aim, but you see enough bullets and explosives laying into the Beasts that it doesn't really matter.

However, what DOES matter is the Beasts suddenly exploding in a massive blue fireball, taking out what has to be a couple city blocks. You feel the blastwave roll over you like a hammer blow, causing even the Fenrir and Kilroy to rock in surprise.

"Fuckers had ragnite charges strapped to themselves!" Ramirez curses. "What the fuck!"

Even though that particular group of Beasts was defeated, you were still forced to divert, meaning you still need to make up for lost time.

Fortunately, you don't encounter any more Beasts and you make it back to the mine without incident. However, when you arrive, you see that Darcsen survivors packing up and.... preparing to move out?

"Ah, Captain Sturmfuhrer! You have returned!" Artyom says happily.

"Artyom, what the hell is going here?" You ask, bewildered.

"It is a miracle! The people saw you fighting the Beasts, and it has given the courage to leave!"

And, I mean, hell... if they were only looting and stealing and foraging because they were pressed by the Beasts, then if that means they won't need to loot/steal anymore once they've left, then great.

As far as I'm concerned -- IF they actually ARE the partisans, and if they don't need to steal anymore once they leave this place, then Mission Fucking Accomplished.

"Any excuse the get the hell out of here." You nod.

You don't to wait long, though. The Somtaw survivors wanted to leave before nightfall, and prepared accordingly. It's a simple matter to drive back to the pass.

"Captain! You're all right!" Heloise sighs in relief and she sees your little convoy approach. "And you brought friends!"

>>
>>25213775
Our?
>>
>>25213666

It'd be funny (and fucking horrifying) if it was actually the Beasts that were doing the raiding.

I mean, after all... How would Artyom know, for sure, that the monsters never go beyond the town, if the Darcsen survivors themselves rarely even check on the zombies and try to keep the fuck away from them, then they might not have the best intelligence on what the Beasts get up to in general.

On the other hand, the surviving villagers might be too scared/traumatized to leave the village -- but maybe there are outsiders who are brave and/or foolish enough to go INTO the village. So maybe some outsiders were providing the villagers with supplies. God knows what they'd be getting in exchange though.
>>
>>25213750

"Artyom, I need to speak to you about something." You say.

"Well then speak, friend!" Artyom says happily.

"I haven't been entirely truthful." You admit. "We were also sent out here on a mission to investigate raids on Ustian supply convoys. You wouldn't happen to know anything about that, do you?"

"Well... about that..." Artyom chuckles nervously. "It was a bit of a ploy on my part. I managed to 'convince' the surrounding towns that we were the only people standing between them and the Beasts, and they gladly 'donated' to our 'war effort'. The people up here are very independent, you know. Moved up to the mountains to escape the government, so they weren't keen on calling them in to deal with the problem. We were just glad enough for the food and supplies we didn't ask where it came from. I guess with the war and everything they had to resort to stealing..."

"Yeah, that sort of has to stop." You say sternly.

"If you'll escort my people back to Valais, I'll go speak to them right away. I promise." Artyom says.

"Good. I really didn't feel like having to shoot you or other Ustians."

"FIRE IN THE HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLE!" You hear Heloise scream from somewhere up above. There is a series of explosions, and a wave of rocks come tumbling down, blocking the pass. Vehicles wouldn't be able to pass and you doubt that even a person would be able to scale it safely. Heloise was certainly good with her work.

---

The ride back is thankfully uneventful. It's already well past night time when you reach Valais. The Somtaw survivors all shuffle off to one of the many refugee camps, and you return to your barracks. Freyberg is already asleep, so you'll just give him your report in the morning.

"Um, Cap, we've got a problem." Sam says, stopping you at the door to your office.

"Huh? What?"

"We, uh, picked up an extra." Sam points behind you.

You turn around and see a very familiar masked figure peeking out shyly from the door behind you.

"Hey, no need to be scared, Artya." You say, motioning for her to come forward. "We're all friends here."

Artya steps forward slowly, her head darting around in all directions before handing you a note.

IS THIS YOUR HOUSE?

"Awwww, she's so cute. Can we keep her Sam?"

"That depends..." Sam frowns. "Artya, how old are you?"

"Cap, she's just a kid. I don't feel right recruiting her in a mercenary unit where she's got a good chance of dying, especially now that she's got a shot a normal... or at least less weird... life."

"Well, what about you, Sam?" You narrow your eyes.

"Yes... but what does that have to do with this?" Sam asks suspiciously.

"Well... you want her have a second shot at life, right? Well, I was thinking we send her to Lanseal."

"WHAT." Sam's mouth falls open.

GOOD LOOT THERE? Artya writes.

"Okay, assuming this is even feasible. How do you even expect her get into Lanseal? She's not a Gallian citizen, and I don't think she's got the right... uh... credentials for this."

"Oh Sam, that's a commoner's way of thinking." You jokingly laugh. "Don't you remember? I'm still a noble. A nice little letter of recommendation, my royal seal, and BAM, instant ticket it."

"Stop making sense, Cap, it scares me." Sam shakes her head. "Wait a minute, you have a royal seal?"

You pull the little stamp out of your pocket. "Never know when I might need it."

"Okay, okay... I think we can pull it off..." Sam nods.

"So how about it, Artya, you want to tag along with the Demons, or do you want to go to one of the most esteemed schools in Gallia."

SCHOOL? Artya cocks her head curiously.

"If you tag along with the Demons you'll see a lot of the world, we'll try to keep you safe and off the front lines, but we can't prepare for everything. We'll take care of you as best we can.

Or you can go to Lanseal, it's a safe place, you can learn more about fighting, but it'll be in a safe controlled environment with people your age, all of you trying to learn and improve yourself so you can protect those who can't defend themselves when you get older. There will be shooting and hiding, but nothing truly dangerous.

Neither of them will have Beasts, they're never leaving Somtaw if we have anything to say about it.

Why didn't you tell me about the zombies? The ZOMBIES, man. The ones in the city, the one in your basement?
>>

So yeah. I'm wondering -- what if it wasn't QYBURN that locked Richter in there?

What if the Beasts locked Richter in there themselves, because he had used Qyburn's gas on them all?
>>
>>25215317
This

Whats the bet Richter was Qyburns greatest creation, and is still alive
>>

>>You mean Richter?
>>
>>25215357
Now that would be quite a turn. At least he's still restrained... right?
>>
>>25215309
He doesn't mean Richter, he means Artyom, the one who would have actually employed those weapons, who is likely more than a little deranged after 20 years in a small valley with a large group of zombies.

"What, you mean Richter?" You ask. "I shot him in the face. Was that a bad thing?"

"Richter... he was such a terrible man." Qyburn shakes his head. "The only thing shorter than his conscience was his attention span. He usually loved organizing Darcsen hunts out of boredom. Anyways, he ended up as a victim of one of my weapons, R2 Gas. He exhibited unusual side effects, though. Rather than die as would happen normally, his body became much stronger and more pain tolerant, with major cosmetic changes. I locked him away when I left the town, but I never imagined the gas would also remove their need for sustenance..."

"What about his troops? The Beasts?"

"Horrible men. Even more terrible than Richter. He at least knew when to give up. It's rather ironic, that he would follow my weapon's intended use. When he saw the effects of R2, he lost his stomach for fighting, but could never afford to show weakness in front of his men, so he sent them all off to die. Deliberately tricked them into walking straight into one of my traps. He would've made a clean getaway too if he didn't fall into another one of my traps."

"There were more than just Richter." You point out. "A lot of the Beasts ended up like him as well."

"Oh dear, I'm so sorry." Qyburn says, completely shocked. "After they were gassed, we buried their bodies as quickly as we could. We just assumed they were all dead, but if they were only changed like Richter..."

Qyburn shakes his head. More reason to make sure R2 never sees the light of day again.

"Do you know anybody by the name of Artyom? He seemed to know you." You say.

"Ah, Artyom, that is a name I haven't heard in a long time..." Qyburn leans back in his chair. "He's a good man. Probably the most sensible of the lot. He helped smuggle me out of Somtaw, on the condition that I never return there again. Last I saw he was trying to evacuate the surviving residents."

"Well, he was still there, but he led the last of the survivors out." You confirm.

"Ah, good for him. I hope he can find peace now."

"Yeah, well, he and the survivors are in one of the refugee camps. You can go visit them, I guess."

"I'll consider it." Qyburn gives a weak smile. "Thank you, Captain. You've lifted a weight off my shoulders. I guarantee you that I'll have that secret project finished by tomorrow!"

"No zombies, right? Please no zombies."

"No, nothing like that."

"Good, because then you'd owe all the Demons two weeks of drink instead of one." You say, patting Qyburn on the shoulder. "Hope your pension can handle it."

"I suppose you deserve at least that much." Qyburn says, totally resigned.

"Now, if you excuse me, I need to get some much need sleep, hopefully without any nightmares."

Unfortunately, you do have a nightmare that night. If Nightmare Karla wasn't bad enough, you had to deal with Nightmare Zombie Karla.

"Goddamnit Qyburn." Is the first thing you mutter when you wake up.

Sadly, as much as I am for this plan...the Idiot Supreme is needed. No one else has the charisma to keep Class G together. There's no DOUBT that the others are the brains of the operations, and to the Moron's credit, he does defer to them.

On the battlefield, he is the guy who you want. Someone who has the force of personality to make disparate people work together as a whole.

He's just SUCH an insufferable idiot at every OTHER moment though.

Personally, I say have Matt and Artya go on a mission to steal Dr. Forester's work and have her send some 'special' goons after them.
>>
>>25215947
>Class G
thats what I hate, that seemingly a single class of uneducated iltrained teenage miscreants is responsible for the countries safety, seriously, they could have all been killed within 3 seconds of their first battle, and it would have changed absolutely nothing
>>
>>25215971
But they weren't the only ones at Lanseal. G being seventh letter of the alphabet there's at least another six classes of less iltrained and more educated individuals responsible.
In fact you don't know how large Lanseal's student body is.
Point is Class G only became the last line AFTER a whole heap of plot related shit went down.
Up until then they're barely breaking even with the other classes.
>>
>>25215996
If I remember correctly for Class G it wasn't that they were necessarily incompetent, it's that they were the sort who were difficult to evaluate properly.

That being said, that's mainly an excuse to have a ragtag band of misfits led by Captain Fuckwaffle save the day.
>>
>>25215971
Yeah, I'm not saying VC2's plot isn't amazingly dumb and full of Anime Crap Plots, because it is.

But the sick part is that there's some really interesting stuff in it. The GRA, the racism issue, the Feds supplying the GRA, Dr. Forester's work, the possible mass proliferation of the Artificial Valkyria Tech, that student from the Empire, the list goes on.

There's a bunch of great elements that can be used to support a strong story...and they scrap it for Anime Bullshit.

And we're still not getting VC3.
The world fucking sucks sometimes.
>>
>>25215947
Yeah things on the battlefield are something he's strong in and he has the good sense to take advice from smarter people, such as Zeri.

We don't know how well Matt'd do as a leader.

>>25215971
Avan at least has town watch experience which is what Alicia and Welkin (maybe) had before they entered the war.

I'm just going to say right now that Matt and Artya will not be put in Class G for reasons similar to why I'm avoiding Squad 7. However, you might run into individual classmates from Class G. But I'd have to do more research on them because I never played VC2 because fuck the PSP.

>>
>>25216360
"Royal" doesn't mean just any noble.

roy·al (adj): of or pertaining to a king, queen, or other sovereign: royal power; a royal palace.

So, let me reiterate. Wat.
>>
>>25216373
Lanseal Grad AND a vet of EWII, I'd say that makes Jager pretty worthy of a Royal Seal from Cordelia whose shown to be VERY generous with her royal gifts
>>
>>25216378

>>
Sturmfuhrers could be royal blood, IIRC Gallia does not use a monarchy or patriarchy, so he could have royal blood but not be tied to ruling the country

>>25216464
theres lots of unexplored possibilities that work well and make sense of it, its just that this particular anon cannot understand that having a royal seal does not mean you rule the galaxy by default

hell, old school RL emissaries to kings and queens had royal seals
>>
>>25216494
That particular anon can understand it and knows about the emissaries. But there is still a pretty big difference between an emissary who acts on authority of the queen and a noble-turned-mercenary.
