You are Captain Numeon Smith of the Knights inductor space marine chapter, and commanding officer of the Aprior sector Joint Task Force, currently on deployment to the world of Tyrae, a world wracked with civil war and genestealer infestation.

The JTF has just conducted a series of lightening strikes on five genestealer controlled PDF bases, quickly overpowering their defenses and retaking these crucial forts.

Under the final base, a nightmarish processing center for implanting captured refugees, Captain Smith has discovered a warren of tunnels leading down into the earth, and has led a strike force of Knights, Sisters of Reason, and the ASIS operative Jager down into the genestealers den.

Now Smith has reached the perimeter sentries, and must decide how to proceed further into the underground complex.

Your task force stands as follows.

SpecOps: ASIS task force, Eldar Ranger squad.

Air Support: Valkyrie Avenger dropships, Shrike air-space fighters.

Heavy Armor: Fenris main battle tanks, precision rocket artillery.

Infantry Support: Sisters of Battle, Battlesuit Team.

Special Units: Confessor, Tau Commander.

A not to players, I am not intending to start the quest right now, but since this is not the usual time for this, I am posting it now to let the players gather in before we begin.

Please check in as you arrive, once a few players are here we shall begin.

You're going to have to be more specific if I am to respond to you.

Like I said, I am just letting the players see that it's up because this isn't the usual time, If nobody shows up them I will simply restart the thread later.

>>
>>25197009
Starting soon, there are some guys talking about the Knights in another thread, I'm going to invite them.

Also, We need a plan to get past a pair of hybrid sentries guarding the door to the next area, there are an unknown, but likely high number of hostiles in this base, so you need a plan of action to start this off.
>>
>>25197162
Wish we had some weapon that could be suppressed.
I'm not seeing many options aside from throwing in the grenade and rushing the position once their attention is grabbed by the grenade.
>>
>>25197195
this is true.
>>
>>25197210
>>25197195
You could go with this, or talk to the team for suggestions.

Another possible tactic would be charging into melee and killing them before they can get the alarm off, but knowing the broodmind, it is likely that they will pick up on your presence before too long, especially considering you just blew the top of their base off.
>>
>>25197252
lets ask the team for advice before charging in.
>>
>>25197252
Broodmind would know either way, because it would feel two voices go silent.

Let's ask the team if anyone has any ideas. Or if anyone picked a weapon that might be useful here.
>>
>>25197278
You turn to the team and open a vox channel.

"Suggestions? It would be useful if we could get past this post without alerting the entire brood to our presence."

"We could gas them." Cypress suggests. "Throw in some knockout gas and put them to sleep, silent and not an obvious cause for alarm for the rest of the brood, simply suspicion."

Jager shakes his head. "That would take too long, the brood would send another team to investigate, I have a different plan, a bit risky for me at least, but it would put them right out.

I don't look like one of you, I dont even look like a soldier, let me walk out there, and they'll think I'm just another brood member that got left behind in the fighting, when I walk by I'll knock them out. The brood will know something is up, but they won't know who is responsible or what exactly happened"

"That cannot possible work." Hisses Cypress, "You'll just get yourself shot if you go out there and they'll know anyway."

"No, I can do this, trust me, I can get past them."

They both look to you. "Your call Captain."
>>
>>25197363
I vote we just shoot them personally. Speed, not stealth.
>>
>>25197393
Any arguments?
>>
>>25197393
I dont like putting Jager in danger like that, too easy for it to go wrong.
Just shoot them.
>>
>>25197462
He seems confident, although you suspect there might be something wrong with his self-preservation instinct.

Confirm for just shoot them?
>>
>>25197477
Right, shooting them in a second.
>>
>>25197540
"Negative, the broodmind will know no matter what we do, so we need to move fast, subtlety is not a luxury we can afford here."

You motion for one of your brother Knights to take the target on the left, while you sight in on the right.

Two simultaneous shots and both guards are blasted apart before they ever knew you were there.

You rush forward from your hiding spot, vaulting over the makeshift barricade in the tunnel, the rest of the strike team falling in behind.

You proceed further, the passages having leveled out now. To each side the walls are lined with simple metal doors, and through a few open doorways you see vox equipment and chugging cogitators, but it seems that this part of the base has been abandoned in a hurry.

Continuing on for a short while, you begin to hear the sounds of activity ahead, voices and movement and the sounds of electronics.
>>
>>25197620
Crouching low, you cautiously walk over to the corner of the passage and sneak a periscope around the side, observing the chamber ahead of you.

It seems to be a command center of some sort, humming cogitator banks and vox systems line the walls and everywhere hybrids are moving with a purposeful air, checking over weapons, taking defensive positions, or speaking quickly into vox systems, informing the other bases of your attack, and trying to reach the bases which you recently retook.

Towards the back of the room a tall man, or something that looks like a man, is giving orders to a group of hybrids, gesturing towards the tunnel you are now in, and after a few more seconds the armed group starts jogging towards your position from the far side of the large command room.

Actions?
>>
>>25197668

>>
>>25197668
Open fire on them while they're still in motion, before they can get ready.
Capturing that leader is the high priority.
>>
>>25197690
Wait until they approach then kill them then the rest?

Also, I forgot to mention in my previous burst of exposition, on the far side of the chamber is a set of large double doors, easily thirty feet high reaching to the top of the chamber.

here you go brother:

>>
>>25197842
>34

You launch yourself forward, diving out of the concealment of the hall and sliding into the cover of a rockcrete support column, firing as you run.

The hybrids look somewhat surprised as they see a marine come charging out of what they thought was their tunnel, and more surprised when a dozen more as well as a mass of Battle Sisters, and a man with a pair of SMGs come charging out as well. Half of the forward group are shredded within seconds as your team rushes, the 'krump' of a grenade off to one side sending bits of desk and hybrid flying, the distinctive boom of bolters echoing off the chamber walls.

A number of hybrids were cut down before they could react, but the survivors have grabbed for their weapons and are firing back from cover, the leader figure silently directing his brethren from the protection of another support column.

You have inflicted moderate casualties in the moment of surprise, roll to engage the survivors.

Also, how do you chose to deal with the leader?
>>
>>25198148
Here's my version.

Basically, they are the Captain Picard of space marines, willing to negotiate with anyone regardless of where they are from or what they are.

If a daemon sat down for an open and frank discussion of mutual grievances they would hear it out, but they very rarely do that.

The PC here is Captain Numeon Smith, commander of the Aprior Joint Task Force, a composite unit of Apriori Guardsmen, Knights Inductor, and the support units listed at the top of the page, drawn from the various human and xeno citizens of the Aprior sector, and in the case of the Eldar Rangers, calling in a favor from a nearby craftworld.

"Jager, Brothers Corbin, Hamlin and Wulf, provide suppressive fire!"

Jager leaps up, a fountain of hot brass pouring from his SMGs, the staccato boom of bolters roaring into life, desks being torn to shreds and large divots being torn from the walls.

You torn and tap the Knight next to you to gain his attention.

"Brother Linnaeus, move up and frag that commander, I want him alive!"

The Knight nods and breaks from cover, firing wildly with his bolter one-handed, drawing a frag with the other. You pour your fire into the crowd of hybrids alongside the rest, the sheer amount of firepower on display sending shrapnel and body parts flying through the room.

Linnaeus rushes up and slips into cover, throwing his frag towards the commander and his entourage. Seeing the granade bouncing towards him, the commander reaches out and hurls one of his guards onto the explosive, the blast tearing the unfortunate hybrid in half.

Still caught in the shock wave, the leader is thrown to the ground, head cracking against a piece of rubble, dazing him.

As the echoes of gunfire fire begin to dim, and the smoke starts to clear, you see that there are no hybrids left standing in the command center.
>>

advance with caution, then quickly "interrogate" the commander. questions are:

2. location of prisoners soon-to-be infected

4. location of armories/barracks
5. location of any genestealers/purestrains
6. location of any enemy leadership
7. quickest route to all these locations and any map of the facility he has
8. the emperor's mercy
>>
>>25198709
You walk forward, surveying the ruined command center as you advance, bits of 'stealer dripping off of tables and ruined consoles.

"Secure those cogitator databanks for study." You order, pointing to some of the still intact devices.

You march over to the prone commander, your bulk overshadowing him as you draw near, the heavy thump of your footfalls echoing around the suddenly quiet chamber.

When you reach him he is groggily reaching into his cloak, but you raise your bolter to his head, the enemy staring down the bore of a gun large enough to slip a few fingers down.

"Don't." You growl in a tone as much felt as heard.

Cypress and Jager, as well as a few Knights walk over, surrounding the prone form on the ground.

Still obviously dazed, the commander looks first from you to Cypress, then his eyes linger on Jager, his brown knitting in confusion.

"Yes, one of these things is not like the other." Jager says, hands sweeping to indicate the mass of armored figures in the room. "Can we move on please?"

"As for you..."

You lean down and tap him between they eyes with the butt of your bolter, knocking him out before manacling his hands and feet. You hand him to a departing Knight who slings him over his shoulder like a sack of potatoes.

"Probably wise." Cypress says, "Who knows what kinds of tricks he had up his sleeves."

"Yeah," Jager says grimly, given how he was directing the brood it's likely he was a psyker."

The room is silent for a moment.

"I was talking about concealed weapons in his robe." Cypress says quietly.

"Well he probably had those too." Jager shrugged.

Turning away from the group, you motion for the remaining Knights and sisters to stack up on the door.

"Well now, let's see what was so important it needed all this protection."

The teams take up position around the door, two Knights moving up to grasp the handles.

"If I know how the brood thinks, and believe me I do, it must be something pretty damned important." Jager says, checking the loads on his SMGs.

You nod, and your brothers pull wide the doors.

>>25199459
Before you lies a dim chamber, its vaulted ceiling reaching higher than the command center itself. Whereas the room you are now in carries an air of military efficiency, this one is lit by braziers and the floor is covered in soft carpets, stitched together at the seams to stretch across the whole room.

A great fire burns off to one side of the room, casting a flickering orange light across the entire scene.

Off on the other side of the room a great pile of cloth sits slumped against a wall, finely spun fabric and mountains of padding propped up in a haphazard pile.

You do not see any immediate signs of habitation, the only movement in the room is the flickering of the firelight.

You wave the team into the room, sweeping the floor with your bolter, eyes and ears sharp for any signs of habitation, your team filing in and fanning out behind you.

As you advance you get a better look at the room and its contents. The walls are lined with paintings and sculptures, a dozen different artistic styles with no clear rhyme or reason to their placement.

Larger statues dot the chamber, and on a nearby table gold engraved plates and goblets sit disused.

All about you is discarded finery, piled here like a dragon's hoard and half ignored.

As you proceed through the room, Jager grows increasingly agitated, sweeping every passing corner with his SMGs and glaring into the dancing darkness.

You can tell that Cypress is uneasy as well, a look of growing concern on her face as she sweeps the empty room with her bolter.

At last you have reached the great pile of cloth and cushions against the far wall. There are still no signs of movement.

Actions?

For a moment I was tempted to say

"COME OUT, FOUL XENO, AND FACE THE EMPEROR'S JUDGEMENT"

but that would have been unreasonable. How many exits are there? I get the feeling they get real swarmed real soon. If there are more than two, place some proximity explosives in them as we pass by - bonus point if they are capable of collapsing the tunnels.
>>
>>25199881
You do not see any other entrances of exits at this time, but it is possible that they are in the seemingly empty segments of the room you have not yet searched.

Look up. Isn't there a big hole in the ceiling?
>>
>>25199951
As you move up, you turn to your allies.

"What's wrong?" You ask, turning again to look around the room.

Cypress looks to you, her brows creased in concern. "We should have met some resistance by now, considering how desperate they were to defend this room."

You nod. "Just stay alert, who knows what lurks in these shadows." Cypress nods in response and links up with a few sisters moving past the great fireplace.

"Jager, how are you doing."

After there is no response, you look over to the operative, sweeping the room with his guns.

You walk over, placing a gauntleted hand gently on his shoulder. He whips around about to bring up his guns, but when he sees it is you he relaxes fractionally.

"What is wrong?"

He shakes his head, letting out an explosive breath.

"I've got a bad feeling about this sir, I've seen this kind of scene enough times to know how it ends."

"No need to be afraid Jager, keep your senses sharp and your weapons ready, we are all here to watch each others backs."

He nods, and is about to walk off when you gently grab his arm and pull him along behind you as you walk over to the mound of cushions, a fireteam of Knights covering it with their bolters.

TBC
>>
>>25200259
You walk over together to the mound, nodding to the Knights as you pass. You firmly grip your bolter in one hand, reaching out with the other, grasping a spun gold curtain with your armored fist.

You throw the cloth aside and snap down your bolter, covering the area ahead. Taking one step forward into the cushioned room, you spin about to see, nothing. The room is entirely deserted.

"Well that was... anticlimactic." You hear Jager say.

You frown and turn about into the greater room. You are about to tell the Knight Sergent to take his team and sweep the corner of the room, but you stop when you see Jager's eyes go wide.

His body shakes, and his guns clatter to the floor before he drops to one knee, holding his head in obvious pain. You jump from the cushions to rush to aid him when he raises a hand to ward you off, shouting desperately.

"Captain look out!"

As you walk forward the floor beneath your right foot gives way, as scything claws slash up through the carpet, a purestrain leaping up towards you.

Throughout the chamber the sounds of battle erupt as packs of hybrids and purestrains leap from their spider holes and engage the forces throughout the chamber.

You pull your boot out of the scything talons before slamming it back down into the creatures head, sending the purestrain back down into the hole it crawled from.

Pausing only to throw a frag grenade down the hole before you leave, you raise your bolter and begin picking off targets, adding one more round of gunshots to the din of battle erupting throughout the chamber.

Off to your right you see Cypress has formed her sisters and a few Knights into a double layered ring, pouring fire into the ranks of monsters charging at them.

You lend them some support, precision fire decapitating a few purestrains rushing them. You turn to see Jager climb back onto his feet, just in time to be crash tackled by a purestrain that grabs him by the wrists and forces him down.

Jager brings his feet to the monsters chest and launches it over his head, he rises to his feet before they rush at each other again, each snarling with seemingly equal ferocity.

TBC
>>
>>25200572

It would seem that you have no time to help him unfortunately, as you are quickly pressed upon again by another swarm.

"KNIGHTS!" you shout firing into the crowds, "TO ME!"

The ragged knights throughout the chamber rush to your side, and you imitate Cypress in forming a two ranked firing line, pouring dozens of bolter shells into the onrushing mass of 'stealers.

It seems like you might have the situation contained for a moment, before you hear a great whistling of air and snarling from above.

Your head snapping back, you see a great shadowed mass dropping down from the ceiling, slamming into the floor with enough force to crack it and collapse a few of the spider holes beneath the surface.

Rising from the crater is a great creature, like a purestrain but much larger, its great scything talons rake the air as it hisses with malice before rushing your position.

They respond admirably, blazing bolters lighting up the darkness of the chamber as your team pours bolter shell after shell into the onrushing monstrosity. Your accurate shooting injures the creature it would seem, blunting its charge, but not enough to stop it.

The great monstrosity crashes into your fireteam, scattering them like ninepins, flailing wildly in pain.

You are knocked back into the massive bed, and tear yourself free of the sheets and blankets before leaping back onto the field.

The Knights who stood with you have been scattered, in various states of health, about this section of the chamber. The broodlord rises up and howls in pain and aggression, before its slanted pupils come to rest upon you.

Try harder. Your writing style gives you away.

Of course, should you actually manage to impersonate OP well enough to be indiscernible, you would effectively only give him opportunity to take a rest with no detrimental effect to the quest.

>2

You snap up your rifle, firing at the broodlord as it rushes towards you, the bolts slamming into it in a tight grouping in the chest, prompting another scream of rage and pain.

Spurred on as if by spite alone, the broodlord rushes forwards and slashes at you with its talons.

You go to parry with your bolter, having nothing else on hand, the great clawed limb cutting it cleanly in half.

There is a moment's lull in the fight as the great best reels back. You Knights have ceased their fire while you were in melee, do you order them to continue? There is a possibility of friendly fire, mind you.
>>
>>25201184
I would never use such an unprofessional contraction! "BLAM!"

------

You drop the worthless pieces of bolter, drawing your pistol and shock maul, and leaping from the bedchamber out into the greater room.

Now having more room to maneuver, you duck and weave around the monsters attacks, smacking aside darting claws with the crackling maul.

The shock maul is certainly not the weapon of a fencer, but between your strength and long decades of practice you manage to keep the monster from pressing upon you for a few moments, though it steadily pushes you back.

Finally, after having its claws snapped at a final time, the broodlord launches at you with its entire body, lashing at you with its massive hands. You batter one aside with the maul, cracking chitin, but the other reaches past and grabs you about the chest.

The broodlords maw opens wide and it lifts you up, but you wriggle your arm free and draw your bolt pistol, firing into its open maw.

The beast screams, whipping you bout in its flailing hand. Finally it raises its clawed hand high and launches you through the air, seeming to decide it doesn't want you anywhere near its face.

You fly for at least a dozen yards before to slam into the ground, bouncing once before slamming into a large statue. You hear a loud cracking sound as the statue breaks at the feet and topples over onto you, pinning you to the floor and driving the taste of copper into your mouth.

You cough inside your helmet, your HUD flickering for a few moments before it resolves itself. Now that you can see again, you look down at the statue pining you. It is a large full body sculpt of someone, you think you recognize one of the previous governors, made of marble.

You grunt and push against the statue atop you, which creaks and rocks a little before sliding back atop your chest. Your arms, it seems, are pinned to the floor at your sides, and you cannot wedge them up under the statue to get any leverage.

Off in the distance you hear the broodlords scream of pain, but you cannot crane your head around to see it.

"Brothers." You croak into your vox. "Knights I have been pinned by the broodlord, I need your assistance."

You are answered only crackling static, it seems that the crash has damaged your vox system.

You gather your strength for another push, when you see movement out of the corner of your vision.

You twist your head searching for the source of the movement, before you see it. A figure, hunched low and predatory, running towards you, silhouetted by the crackling firelight as it closes with your prone form, hands outstretched.

TBC
>>
>>25203548
Close your eyes, maybe it doesn't see you then.
>>
>>25203548
Seeing the creature move closer, you push against the statue again, the unyielding stone visage of the long dead aristocrat seems to taunt you as it barely shifts atop you.

Without leverage to move the weight, it seems that you cannot move it, nor can you fight.

You look back to the running beast as it grows ever closer, and you frantically kick and squirm against the crushing weight, to no avail it would seem.

You try the vox again, but it seems well and truly out.

"Well it certainly seems like you've seen better days Cap."
>>
>>25203679
"yes I have. And you are?"

"Hah! Very funny. Now get this thing off me, we've a job to finish!"
>>
>>25203679
You pause for a moment, thinking that the vox had suddenly stirred back to life, but then you realize that you had heard the voice of one nearby, not through your vox.

Looking back to the running figure, you see it solidify into the form of Jager, his coat whipping behind him as he skids to a stop, panting.

"Wherever would 'pant' you be without 'pant' me to come and 'pant' help you out?"

He comes over to the statue and grips it, blood running from his hands and staining the marble red. You push together, and to your surprise the statue moves a little, but not very much.

"Frak!" Jager swears, before keying his vox.

"Cypress, can you give me a hand over here? The Captain has been pinned under a statue by the broodlord."

You don't hear the response, but from Jagers nodding, it seems that help is on the way.

That's when you notice the flickering shadow come over the pillar, and the hissing of the purestrain behind Jager.

"Jager check six!"

"FRAK!" Jager shouts spinning about, reaching into his coat, but the monster is upon him before he can draw his weapon.

The purestrain raises its fore limb and brings it slashing down, sending Jager slamming against the statue.

The monster hisses and moves towards you, struggling under the statue. But before it can reach you, you see Jager pull himself up and strike at its back, making the purestrain hiss in agitation and turn to face him head on.

The purestrain hisses at Jager, Jager hisses back, and they crash together in a flurry of grapples and strikes.

But it seems Jagers wounds have slowed him down, and after a brutal few seconds of the beasts fury the purestrain pins him to the statue, holding him by his wrists and opening its maw wide.

Under the statue, you struggle and curse but you cannot do more than rock the stone back and forth.

The creature leans in for the coup de grâce, but just before it finishes Jager, it seems to hesitate, sniffing at him.

It leans back, seemingly confused, before leaning in and inspecting him again. After taking a moment, the xeno seems to make up its mind, and opens its mouth again, the ovipositor sliding out.

Jager goes very still, staring at the creature before him, then he glances at you, and then back to the purestrain, his eyes flashing in the firelight as the creature leans in.

You hear something that feels like gagging, but you cannot see what is going on for a moment, before the 'stealer leans back away, a pair of gun barrels wedged under its throat.

"Frak. You."

Jager squeezes the triggers and shreds the purestrains head off at point blank range.

Jager staggers from the statue and sinks to one knee, breathing heavily. When Jager turns into the firelight, you get a good look at his front.

His coat is torn in a few places, and one of his gloves is gone. Without the long coat to cover him up, you notice his distinctly inhuman body shape.

Under the torn coat and shirt is not flak armor, as you would have expected, but rather white segmented chitin, marred with fresh slashes, slowly leaking blood at some points, and with the glove gone, you see that his five fingered hand looks more like an armored gauntlet, clawed fingers poking through.

He stows his SMGs with his secondary three-fingered hands, and pulls himself up, walking over, and setting his hands against the statue again.

"So, I'm guessing you have a lot of questions. But for the moment, let's just get this ugly rock off of you. I promise that I can explain everything."

"This wasn't in the ASIS dossier."

"It wasn't? No I suppose it wasn't. Damn, someone at ASIS is playing games."

He pushes against the statue but still fails to move it, but to your side you hear the tromp of booted feet.

Looking up, you see sister Cypress running over.

"I am sorry Captain, the enemy pressed upon my sisters and I needed to..." She sees Jager "what!" Bringing up her bolter.

"Woah, woah woah!" Jager shouts, "You know how 'stealers work, do you think that implantation does this?" He points to himself with all his arms." I didn't get through ASIS without ever having to take a physical, now help me get this damned rock off of him, fight now talk later!"

In the distance the broodlord howls again.

He turns his back to the Sister and starts to push the statue again. After a few moments of hesitation, Cypress slings her weapon and joins him. After a few seconds of your combined effort, the statue slips sideways. And you roll out, free at last.

Looking around, you see that the battle continues ferociously, more rienforcements piling into the battle as others are taken out, brothers and sisters forming islands of ceramite and bolter fire in the small sea of chitin and flak armor.

Off to the side the broodlord has seemingly shaken off almost being shot in the brain, and has risen to its feet, stalking towards a bastion of Knights.

>I believe the plan was to detonate some knockout gas canisters to blow it up when last there was planning.

The sole reason why we're not instantly blamming him is because we're reasonable marines, that's why we're getting him in prison as soon as possible. Yes, lets give him the perfect opportunity to slip away with all of our secrets and blackmail us. That has no way of ending terribly.

OK, now we definitely need to run a fucking investigation, and keep Jager alive as witness. This shit can't pass.
>>
>>25204660
We could strap some kind of a remotely detonated payload on him? Like melta bombs or something.
>>
>>25204609

We're getting him out for a chat which might end in him getting imprisoned, executed or returned into service. And we're going to have a chat with his immediate superior as well for keeping important information from us. And from the sisters as well, apparently.

Right now we have no idea if he's "someone's" spy, even if it's a possibility.

Not on the dossier we were given, which isn't necessarily everything that ASIS has on their own files on him.
And we didn't read through his specific dossier, only on the team that he was on, and on Kolchak, the team leader.
Kolchak, who personally was with the medicae as they administered a genestealer exam to Jager and the rest of his team after they were recovered from the genestealer hive.

So Kolchak knew and he didn't tell us. So ASIS knew about Jager's mutations.
>>
>>25204704
Returning him to service is *not* an option. He has shown himself to be untrustworthy which means he's easily compromised. In covert operations that puts the entire team at risk. One way or another he won't be serving in military ever again.
>>
>>25204736
His team already knew about it, as did ASIS. They simply didn't inform us about it, like a CIA team attached to an Army command will keep its own secrets from the commander.
>>
>>25204733
>and he didn't tell us
Which is the point why he cannot continue to serve under us anymore. He's a liability that endangers his whole team. Would you rather put aside one man instead of trying to recruit an entire covert operations team on short notice?
>>
>>25204761

So what else didn't they tell us? Can we trust the information they've provided, like the results of the genestealer screening?
>>
>>25204761
Irrelevant, he's a mutant not a human. Take him off in irons.
>>
If Jager wanted to kill us, he could have done so when we were pinned under the statue helpless like a baby, making it clear his intentions are not hostile. If he has any other motives and no plausible explanations with evidence in his favor, he can be shipped back home for interrogation, examination and dissection, in that order.

That being said, it boggles the mind why anyone would feel so compelled to try and annoy other people with absolutely no benefit. It's so... unreasonable.
>>
>>25204765
He didn't tell us because he expected it to be in the dossier that ASIS forwarded to us, because it's most likely already in his ASIS personnel file.
A reasonable assumption to make.

>>25204776
Then are you going to distrust the entire ASIS team? Because that's what you're effectively saying we need to do.
>>
>>25204800
>Then are you going to distrust the entire ASIS team?
If they are withholding vital information such as this, it sounds like a very reasonable thing to do.
>>
>>25204800

Verifying and cross-checking the information they provide, as well as starting an investigation makes sense. It's a reasonable course of action at this point.
>>
>>25204799
I thought that we were supposed to be REASONABLE marines? What sounds reasonable to you about 'if your covert operatives lie to you, totally let it slide'?
>>
>>25204800
It wouldn't be the first time, say, CIA and Army were at odds in field. I think it would be prudent to pull back the ASIS team from active duty and use Eldar Rangers for scouting from now on.
>>
>>25204799
>It's so... unreasonable.
Quit slapping that word onto your post as if it somehow gives your argument more weight and authority. There is nothing reasonable about trusting a man who lied to you.
>>
>>25204840

Exactly, if we find that there were REASONABLE REASONS for this lapse of information, we may elect to let it slide, after being sufficiently cross with ASIS leader.

Do not pretend that real life commander know everything about intelligence agents posted under their command.
>>
>>25204720
"Good." You say, "Now we need some way to light it off."

Jager snaps his fingers, a grin forming.

"Plasma gun!" he shouts, "I'll go get one. He turns and runs off over the bloody carpet, back towards the fighting. "Be right back!"

"Frak." Swears Cypress under her breath, handing you her bolt pistol.

"Okay, we need to get that things attention, I say I draw its attention and then run, then you plant the gas while it focuses on me."

She checks over her bolter, drawing herself up tall and looking to you expectantly.

"Right, you draw its fire, I plant the bomb."

Cypress nods, and you both take off running, long strides bringing you close to the monster.

Cypress begins shouting a battle hymn as she runs towards the broodlord, firing her bolter on full-auto, but at this range there is little that can be said for accuracy.

The monster notices her shots and turns, seeming to chose to deal with this minor annoyance rather than the greater threat, charging low and reaching out its talons.

Cypress promptly about faces and runs away, shouting something markedly less sacred as she runs.

After a moment, the creature is about to rush past you, seemingly missing you in the dark.

Seemingly too intent on chasing the sister, the broodlord does not notice your presence in the dim chamber.

Running up behind the massive genestealer, you stow the gas canister on your belt and leap up, digging your combat knife into the chitin on its back.

The creature notices you after a moment and flails, trying to shake you, but you cling on and climb higher up its back, grabbing its shoulders to pull yourself up.

Taking its snapping upper jaw in hand, you drive the canister into its mouth, wedging it between a pair of teeth. Your task done, you plant your boot on its neck and kick off, twisting in midair to land on your feet, knees bent to absorb the blow.

The monster gags on the canister, but decides you are the greater threat and faces you.

"Captain!" You turn to see a hybrid running towards you, plasma gun held over his head, Jager winds up and hurls the plasma rifle end over end.

The broodlord dives at you, and you leap sideways, rolling on the carpet before reaching up and catching the plasma gun.

Wheeling around, you snap the rifle up and draw a bead on the turning broodlords head, aiming for the glinting canister in its mouth.

You squeeze the trigger.

The ravening burst of star-stuff erupts from the guns muzzle, momentarily lighting up the darkness of the chamber, before streaking into the creatures open mouth, directly into the canister.

The result is instantaneous, the gas canister rupturing spectacularly, the superheated plasma igniting the entire volume at once, blasting the broodlords head and half its torso to bloody gibbets.

All around you, you hear the genestealers erupt in howls and shrieks of panic, anger, and perhaps fear.

>>25205211

After that, the battle is decided swiftly. Without the broodlord to direct the swarm the remaining genestealers broke against the unshakable will of the knights and sisters like water upon rock, and in a matter of minutes they all either lay dead or have retreated back down the tunnels from which they sprang, howling in defeat all the way.

Around you the battlefield grows quiet once more, the gently steaming corpse of the broodlord and the movements of injured warriors the only sounds but for the roaring of the fire.

Cypress walk over, her face flushed with sweat, but healthy. Jager limps over as well, tying a bandage on one of his forelimbs, but a grin starting to form when he sees the corpse of the broodlord staining the carpets.

The battle is concluded, actions?

Call the PDF general, Tell him that we got the broodlord and he should begin a general advance while they are disorganized.

Second.
>>
>>25205333

You key your vox, searching for general Kiersen's frequency, after a moment you remember that your vox is broken and remove your helmet.

"My vox is damaged, I need a replacement."

Jager unclips his transmitter and hand it to you, grinning sheepishly.

You hold the tiny device up and key it.

"This is Captain Smith calling General Kiersen, Commander Vael and Colonel O'Niell, come in."

After a few moments the various commanders report in.

"This is Smith, the operation to retake the PDF bases has been concluded successfully. In our attack on the final base we discovered a genestealer broodlord, and have slain it. The swarm will be disorganized for some time until another purestrain takes command, the time to strike against them is now."

"Did you say a broodlord?" Kiersen asks incredulously.

"Yes general, the overall commander of the swarm, I advise that you counterattack immediately to capitalize on their confusion, liaise with O'Niell and strike the winning blow against them."

"Yes my lord, I shall do so!"

He disconnects, and you turn back to your companions.

"Cypress, organize the able fighters and secure this room, collapse those tunnels if you have to and link up with the other brothers securing the base. And Jager."

You fix him with a steady gaze.

"Come with me."

>Unless you want to talk to him on the way out.
I want to hear the story from his CO.
Kolchak checked Jager out, and was signed off on Jager's medical scan for genestealer infection.
Therefore, Kolchak already knew about it, and didn't tell us.
Questioning Jager won't be as useful, since he believed we were already briefed on his condition.

You begin walking across the room, stopping to check in on wounded brothers, some are hurt very bad and will need the help of a good medicae to fight again, a few are beyond any help but the Emperors now.

As you walk you turn to Jager, eying the blooded carapace beneath the coat, which he then draws shut, trying to arrange the various holes and slashes to hide his inhuman physique.

"So, Jager, explain yourself."

I'm kind of surprised nobody said anything before now, I tried to drop hints and foreshadow wherever I felt appropriate, nice to see you picked up on it.

Well his absolute hate and disgust with genestealers was pretty obvious. I didn't think in really needed to be pointed out?
>>
>>25205703

"You deserve that much, and damn if I don't feel the need to tell somebody."

He is silent for a moment, composing his thoughts.

"This all started when I was born, I suppose, and don't you laugh. I was born into a genestealer cult on some mining colony back in Aprior. The first thing I remember is the voice of the brood in my mind, drowning out all thought until I just went along with the patriarch's command."

Jager shudders at the memory.

"I grew I was taught to obey, to fight, to subvert, but luckily my brood was found by ASIS before they could do any real damage, and those of us who were not killed ended up in ASIS custody. It was actually Kolchack who found the brood, back when he was still a field agent, it was he who took me custody, after I tried to tear out his throat to defend the brood."

Jager is quiet for a few minutes. As you walk up through the facility, you pass the remains of a hard fought battle in the halls and rooms you pass. It would seem that once you began to battle the broodlord it called upon its servants in the rest of the base to aid it, and the Knights securing the facility found themselves beset upon by waves of enraged 'stealers, but were able to corner and eventually eradicate them.

"After that," Jager begins again, "I spent six years in an Apriori medicae, undergoing psychic therapy and corrective surgery to harmonize my human and 'nid parts, otherwise I wouldn't have much of a life expectancy. So after the psykers scooped out everything I used to be, and the therapy staff taught me how to be a person again, there was the question of what to do with me. Most wanted me locked away as a lab rat forever, not a life I would envy."

He laughs.

In the end, it was Kolchack who came to my rescue again.

TBC
>>
>>25205848

"He pulled me out of that medicae and gave me a purpose, even asked nicely if I wanted to fight with him. But hell, ASIS is the entire reason I exist, so I couldn't say no. I signed up with special operations and have been here ever since.

Worked with ASIS for a few years, moved on up the ranks, became one of their better problem solvers. Eventually I reached the rank of field officer and built my team, we're an odd bunch of outcasts and renegaded to be sure, but we're all damn loyal to Aprior sir, we've got your back.

As for why nobody told you about my 'condition' I generally don't know. All I can say is talk to Kolchack, if he doesn't know then I can't even begin to think how this might have happened or why."

He turns to face you as you walk into the sunlight of the base, making sure his coat covers all revealing bits.

"And that really is the whole story sir."
>>
>>25205952
Say anything further to him, or return to base and confront Kolchack?

Unless there was something else you would like to do?
>>
>>25205952
lets wait until we here the story from Kolchack
>>
>>25205952

Does he feel brood mind compelling him somehow?

He certainly did not seem affected by the brood lord, but this would be a risk a commander should be aware of.

Regardless, we're going to have a chat with Kolchak. And possibly ship this particular operative back home. If some local girl caught him with pants down, all our work here could be undone.
>>
>>25205989
Ask him if he's able to listen in on the local Broodmind. From what we saw, it seemed that his "condition" could momentarily confuse genestealers.

Then we need to talk with Kolchack.
Is this something that ASIS cooked up, and is the Chapter Master aware of this.
>>
>>25206017
>>25205991

"After the psykers finished pulling out all the 'nid in my head they put up wards to prevent the brood or hivemind from taking me over again. I can sometimes 'hear' them, but it's faint and indistinct, muffled so I can't really tell what they're saying. If they shout really loud or push hard, then the wards flare up and it can be, painful, as you saw down there.

As for why that purestrain was confused, I think it has less to do with any psychic communication and more to do with how I smelled."

Jager rolls his shoulders, somewhat embarrassed.

"Yeah, that's part of how i'm a good operative for this kind of work, a 'nid's sense of smell."

He taps his nose, grinning.

You activate your vox and call Kolchack, the senior agent answering in a few seconds.

"How may I assist you Captain?"

"I know about Jager's 'condition' meet me at the command center. We need to talk."

The line is silent for a moment.

"Yes, I suppose we do."

The line cuts out. You look over to Jager, slumped against the seat.

"You understand you will be off active duty until this is sorted out."

"That's fine bossman." He says, unscrewing a canteen and pouring it over his head. "I could use a vacation.

If medical and psykic experts of our intelligence services are confident that the man's not only safe, but useful in the field, I don't see any problem here. This is not dark eldar expedition where even our own kinsmen would feel inclined to stab our backs.

Of course there's the obvious issue that we should've been informed that one of our men is a hybrid. Especially given circumstances.

Hear Kolchak's story. If it checks out with what Jager's been telling us, ask him if there are any more surprises we should be aware of among the men. Like if perhaps one of them is not secretly a daemon or something like that.

Nothing further is said as you fly back to the capitol, there is nothing else left to say. Eventually the Avenger sets down outside your HQ and the two of you step out.

Kolchack is waiting.

"Dismissed Jager." You say, eyes boring into the senior ASIS operative.

"Sirs." he says, a somewhat worried look on his face before walking away to sit on a stack of tires in the vehicle park.

The two of you walk into the HQ in silence, proceeding until you reach your office on the second floor, window overlooking the parking area and street, Jager sitting off to the side.

"Explain yourself Kolchack." You growl, "I do not take kindly to unknown elements under my command. Why did you not feel the fact that he is a tyranid was relevant to the dossier."

Kolchack is silent for a moment, walking over to the window.

"I suppose that he told you the story of how I rescued him from the brood?"

You nod.

"Then he will have told you how ASIS picked him back up, gave him a purpose, a cause to live for, a home."

Kolchack scoffs at his own words.

"ASIS didn't give Jager a home, they gave him a cage, all they saw in him was claws and chitin, a tool to be used in their wetwork department. And so they sent me, the friendly remembered face, to take Jager from his medicae and bring him back to ASIS, where he quickly became the agency's black-op attack dog. They kept him penned, starved, and turned him loose when they needed a problem solved, and he never complained because it was so much better than the brood."

He turns away from the window and starts to pace.

"I knew he would never be anything more than a living weapon back in Aprior, but out here..."

He looks to you, nodding.

"This Task Force is unlike anything which has ever been attempted, you will travel far and see much in your service to the Imperium.

So, when I was told to write a dossier on my team as a potential resource I, neglected to mention Jager's 'condition'.

TBC
>>
>>25206663
Honestly, nobody back at ASIS expected you to pick this unit, but now that you did they see no conflict with Jager serving here.

He is fully sanctioned and I trust him with my life, he has prevented major catastrophes across the Aprior sector in the past, and is genuinely one of the best agents I have ever known.

I know I have no right to ask anything of you after what I've done, but I don't ask for me."

He looks out the window at Jager.

"Give him a chance Captain, the fault was mine not his, and if there needs to be punishment then it should fall upon me."

"I understand sir, What I have done is not excusable, but I could not simply sit and rot. And from a pragmatic standpoint, he is a valuable asset to any team, and far more subtle than most of his 'brethren'."

"I will be keeping an eye on Jager, I cannot allow him to be compromised with the civilian populace."

"It hasn't happened yet sir." Kolchack says definitively, "Jager has worked undercover for months in close quarters without having his cover blown, he can be a ghost when he wants to be. But as always sir, the operational discretion is yours."

You stare at him for a long time. Heavy gaze boring into him.

"Anything else I should know about? Any daemons working in the guard division I should be aware of."

Kolchack maintains a perfectly straight face. "There are no daemons operating within this task force at present."

You nod, the hint of a grin on your face, but only the hint. "You can both stay, but damned if there won't be repercussions for this Kolchack. Dismissed."

Kolchack salutes and excuses himself from the office. You watch from the window as the senior agent walks over to Jager and tells him the news, the hybrid agent leaping up and clapping his handler on the shoulder before rushing off in the general direction of the nearest bar.

We should coordinate with the techpriests and the Governor, about setting up an Aprior-style civil defense training program, and purchasing shipments of Aprior-produced lasrifles until a local production factory can be built and start feeding their need for weapons.
>>
>>25207196
With the broodlord slain and his magos in custody, not to mention the loss of several key bases, the infected forces on Tyrae soon devolved into complete disarray, the uncanny coordination with which they had led their assault up till now broken, while the defenders were only heartened by the news of the leader's demise.

Following the JTFs lightening strike, loyalist forces begin to slowly roll back the enemy's forces.

The tightening noose becomes a true stranglehold with the arrival of the first shipment of Fenris MBTs from Aprior, to which the PDF take with gusto, clearing base after base.

Slowly, the attacks fade, the war died down, the skirmishes grew fewer and fewer, and in the end the conflict ended not with a bang, but a whimper, as the last major genestealer stronghold was stormed by a PDF division.

Eventually, the PDF is taken from an active war footing to standby alert, and the public scanning continued until the vast majority of the populace had been declared free of taint, with scans continuing to root out the last few un-scanned individuals.

The reconstruction of Tyrae's industry is coming along apace, and a proposal to instigate a civil defense training has been accepted, with classes already underway.

You are filing paperwork with the PDF liaison when you receive an invitation to the Governor's palace, apparently Varan is hosting some form of social function as a way to cement the end of major hostilities in the eyes of the people, and he extends his invitation to you.

I'm confused as hell.

Someone knowingly hid a hybrid among our task force and it was -never- mentioned in passing to the force commander?

And his reason is that 'woe is his tragic backstory'. Not only is every part of that unreasonable for him to do, but its brushed off with 'there will be consequences later'?

Endangering the mission, the task force and even the SECTOR by his deception. Relieve of duty and phone home for a replacement. That bastard could have doomed everything

Not to mention that 2 rolls under 9 still resulted in getting horribly thrashed against a brood lord that ate bolter rounds to the face and chest. Shouldn't an infestation of this size have one of the psyker monstrosities that is a patriarch?

>>25208316

>>25208414
Kolchack is human. He has flaws, he has failings, and he has his hopes. He does not always make the 'right' decision, based on what is best from anothers viewpoint, rather what he himself believes to be correct, or what he wants to see happen.

Remember, the Inquisition already knows that the Apriori treat genestealers, it was in that inquisitor's report from the stories. While it may make interactions with locals a bit uncomfortable if found out, it wont make the Inquisition any more likely to kill you than they already are, unless his reveal causes some great catastrophe.
>>
>>25208414
A good roll may lead to victory, but would you prefer that I rewrite that section to where we effortlessly curbstomp a 30-ft tall psychic monstrosity, rather than defeating a powerful opponent through skill and planning, and triumphing over adversity?

If I let you effortlessly kill every enemy just because of one good roll then this ceases to be interesting for the players and me.

And as for us getting thrashed, we got a few scrapes and bruises, it ended up blown apart from the inside out, we came off better to be sure.
>>
>>25208633
Being human isn't a problem. Hiding critical information from a commander knowingly is worse than incompetence, it is knowingly betraying the trust that commander needs in your abilities.

He didn't just screw up, he intentionally destroyed the very thing his commander must have in all of his subordinates.

>>25208845
Luck is just as powerful a tool as anything else, especially when you've walked into an enemy ambush. Considering the best-of-three rule and lack of enemy skill rolls, it does seem like you're just killing enemies because of one good roll.
