Carrying on last nights shambolic thread. I was quite hungover, my writing skills were not with me and I jumped the gun a little bit with our new Warforged buddy.

That being said, we'll have a few more hours of questing, I'll try to pull out all the stops and make this much more enjoyable.

Just as a quick recap, we had the day off and went around the other smiths to learn some secrets. El'Galia gave us a bit of engraving training, Anamman revealed the secrets of Al'k'Zir Steel (not-Damascus Steel), we met his fire demon, Calcifer. We met a lovely girl, whose name we still don't know, at the Mining Consortium and learnt a bit more about the available ores (well, not all of them).

You were then making your way back to town when you discovered that a Warforged, who was missing an arm, came into Urist's shop seeking repairs and ending up trashing the place. Taking the advice from anons in the last thread, the next post will draw that to a conclusion. You also have a date in a few hours.
>>
The Warforged stares you in the eye, waiting for your reply. It's domed head gleaming in the light that Calcifer is throwing around the room.

You look around at the other smiths, who are eagerly awaiting your reply.

You let ouy a deep sigh "There's no way we'd get this done in a reasonable amount of time, this type of work would probably take months..." You look at Urist, "However, having an extra pair of hands, sorry, 'hand', around the shop could be very useful."

Urist looks at you and nods, he steps forward out of the shadow of the Warforged. "Tell ya what, ya big contraption, we'll fix ya arm for ya, if ya do some work around the shop."

The Warforged looks down at Urist and then back up at you. He flexes his fingers on his remaining hand and offers it out to you.

"That sounds like a fair trade." His voice rattles out of his metal throat, you can imagine the springs and coils that make up his vocal chords vibrating and shaking around. You shake the Warforged's hand and Urist steps up and does the same. "Well than, do ya have a name?"

"You may call me Balthazar."
>>
>>25195205
That won't do, we'll compromise and call him 'Ballsy'.
>>
>>25195235
Also, forge some brass balls on him as a practical joke.

Looking pleased at your new arrangement, Balthazar immediately starts to undo the mess he's created. As he lifts the upturned tables the other blacksmiths start to walk out of the shop.

After a little while the shop is back to normal, Balthazar starts to generally clean the shop for now, and you pull Urist over to have a talk.

"I've got a...date...tonight Urist, you've been in this town a lot longer than I have, where would you go if you were me?" You ask the smith. You can see Urist form a slight smile under his mighty beard.

"Yer settling in just fine lad, got a pretty lass already, eh?" He nudges you in the arm.

"Well let's see..." He runs a coal-stained hand down his beard, "Dwarven dating is a lot different than Human dating, last time I took a lass out we got drunk on fermented mushroom ale and ending up having sex in a cave." You wince at the actions that follow his words.

"But I tell you what, if there's one thing we Dwarves now, it's real beauty. There's a mine to the west of here, only about half an hours walk, and when the moonlight hits it just right, well, it's a sight to remember." Urist pats you on the shoulder and starts to help Balthazar tidy up the shop.

Well, looks like you better get ready for your big date.
>>
>>25195262
Jesus fucking christ
>>
>>25195278
Right, so the details of the date are up to you.

What clothes should we wear?
Do we buy her a gift?
Where will we go in the city? Will we listen to Urist and try out his mine idea?

Do we shave?
>>
>>25195314
>Do we shave?
Are you out of your mind?

Also, buy her flowers.
We bought that elf chick some, might as well do it again
>>
>>25195314
Never shave, not even before death itself.

We shall wear whatever clothes are to be worn on a date, but will make sure it exposes our manly chest hairs.

Our gift will be a perfume of the highest quality mixed with our manly musk.

We shall take her to the mines.
>>
>>25195262
Oh come on, a warforged smith with metal balls jingling from his crotch is a hilarious idea. It's not like he even realizes the joke with what being a construct and all.

Raiding the clothes you brought back from your old home you find a smart shirt and some nice trousers to put on.

You wash thoroughly, god knows you stink after working in a smithy even for a short amount of time. After a little while you are the epitome of suave, your hair is combed back, you have washed your beard so it now looks fairly presentable and you have 'borrowed' some of Urist's very powerful aftershave, but only a drop or two.

You get the directions to the mine from Urist and pop out to the shops. Soon you have a lovely bouqet of fresh flowers, along with a picnic hamper filled with bread, meat and cheese. Nothing like a picnic on a moonlit night.

Heading up the road you eventually come to the Consortium, it's gigantic stone walls illuminated by the stars. Just under one of the oil-lamps outside you notice the sillhouette of your date, she steps out into the light and your breath is taken away.

Her hair cascades down her shoulders like a silken waterfall, her earrings shimmer in the light like stars and her dress flows softly to her legs.

She walks over to you as you stand there with your mouth slightly open. "Hello stranger, I don't believe we've met, my name's Sarah." She holds out her hand and giggles slightly.

>Take it away.

"Alaric." You simply reply. You grab her hand and kiss it, your bristles stroking against her wrist.

You present her with the flowers and pick up the basket with one hand, offering her your free arm. She quickly holds onto it and asks you where you are going.

"My Master has said that there's a sight that even the Dwarves consider beautiful, just outside the city gates." You tell her, she seems intrigued.

You spend the walk talking about little things, you learn that her father is one of the quality assessors in the Consortium and that his passion for ore has been passed down to her. She tells you lovingly about the first time she saw mithril ore and how it sparkled when the light bounced off it.

After a little you arrive at a small hill just outside the mine that Urist mentioned. Coming to the apex of the hill both you and Sarah's breath is taken away by the site before you.
>>
>>25195724
That wasn't punching her in the face
>>
>>25195724
What might appear as a dirty little hole in the ground in the day, has now been transformed into a dazzling display.

The bottom of the mine is blackened by night and the veins of ore that run through the rock twinkle and sparkle in the moonlight, like a cat's eye in the darkness. Tiny dots of light burst forth from the rock, no doubt gems of some value, and radiant ribbons of ore streak through the darkness, brilliantly lit up by your silver companion's luminescence.

You lay down a small blanket on the top of the hill and start to set up the picnic. You and Sarah talk through the night until the wee hours of the morning, sharing fond memories and laughs. The moon starts to drop in the sky and a faint orange glow appears at the opposite horizon.

You end up walking Sarah home, she tells you she has had a wonderful evening as she leans in and kisses your cheek gently.

Just another day in the life of a blacksmith.

You wake up in the morning and despite your restless night, you still feel quite refreshed. No doubt due to spending the evening with a beautiful girl.

Wandering down to the shop you are greeted by Urist, you tell him all about your night and he pats you on the shoulder again "Told ya didn't I laddy? No girl can resist glittering rocks."

"Anyway, enough romance for one day, we've got work to do!" He pulls out his notebook and starts to thumb through the pages. "How about this one?"

I think we'll go with the best of the first 3 votes. So in this case we've accepted.

You have 3 actions to spend on smithing these items.

1 of them will have to be smithing the product. The other 2 rolls can be used on improving the smithing quality, or applying a 'finisher' to the product; polishing, sharpening, engraving, etc.

So let's get smithing out of the way first, 1d100 and the best from the first 3 rolls will be taken into account. Decide amongst yourselves what you want to spend the next actions in.

We take 10% of any roll used to improve a primary roll.

Our primary roll was 42, with the -5 modifier it takes it down to 35. We then added on 10% of the secondary roll (97, well done) which brings out total to 44.

If you can get it to 50 or above, you put it into the next quality bracket, and will earn a little bit of smithing experience.

>Hey you guys are good at this
>37 + 9 + 9 = 55 (my maths was off on the previous post).

The steel in your hands quickly submits to your will as you shape it into the various pieces of the mace. Working on the rods that you had produced a few days you, you deftly make the handles of the maces.

Hammering out the rods into thin sheets you produce a number of flanges that will easily destroy any attackers defences.

In the end you have a selection of fine steel maces in front of you, your face reflects off each part of the mace as you admire your work. Sure it's not as balanced as you'd like it to be, but it'll get the job done.

>Great job

>>25196419
After seeing you craft the maces over a number of days, Balthazar seems to become interested in the process.

Usually he's bringing ores into the shop, or fixing up pieces of woodwork that he destroyed when you first met him, but every so often you see him peering over at what your doing, and almost imitating you.

Eventually the giant Warforged walks over to you one day and bluntly asks to be taught how to do your job.

"Balthazar, truth be told I'm still learning myself." The Warforged looks down at the floor, dissapointed in your rejection. "But you can always help me out on my jobs if you want."

"I would like that." Balthazar replies, he's obviously done some minor repairs to his vocal chords as his voice rings out across the workshop.

>Due to his size Balthazar will only help you on larger products; warhammers, platebodies, etc.
>Specify that you want him to help and he will provide a small +5 modifier to the primary smithing roll and +2 to any secondary smithing rolls after that.

>Right, you've finished your job, no need to deliver the goods. Is there anything you'd like to do?

"One of the Captains in the town guard wanted a ceremonial platebody to be dne, he understands it might take a bit of time, so he's asked for this well in advance. I have no doubt that you'll be able to pull it off."

>Putting all 3 actions into extra engraving.

Balthazar is very eager to start smithing and it's not long before you have the makings of a platebody in front of you.

You work on the platebody, tapping and hitting the metal into place gently, while Balthazar follows up as a striker, swinging the hammer you've given him with all his force. The sounds echo out of the workshop and into the street outside.

You decide to start to engrave the platebody, your first real engraving since you helped out El'Galia and Urist on that suit of armour.

After talking with Urist and a few members of the Guard you end up with quite a bit of information about the Captain. He's been in the town guard all of his life, so you decide for a very powerful and dominant design.

After the engraving is done you take a step back and look at the platebody, to get the bigger picture. A pair of crossed swords adorn the top part of the chest, a number of shields with the Captain's family heraldry on it (a double headed dragon) adorn the pectorals of the product.

Scrolls and flowers roll down the sides of the body, as if they were in motion, depictions of armed soldiers defending their walls are scattered across the metal.

You've done a perfect job in engraving the product. The actual platebody is good quality but the engraving really takes it to that next level.

Running your own business was originally what this quest was going to be. But it eventually was decided that we should earn our way there.

Our popularity and prestige levels is slowly going up, it'll take a while but the more jobs and favours we do, the higher those levels will get. It'll probably start off with upgrading Urist's shop, complete with opening ceremony and will end up whever you want it to go.

So, do we want to talk to Balthazar now? What do you want to ask him?

I'm guessing we know very little about warforged, so he could tell us his life story if he wanted, im curious about his thoughts on smithing though, it would seem prudent, if you're a living metal creature, to be a proficient smith, tp atleast maintain your own body

After the work is complete you call Balthazar over and have a chat with him. You don't really know much about Warforged, so any information he could provide would be great.

"So Balthazar, do you mind telling me what exactly a 'Warforged' is?" Both of you are now sitting down against the workshop wall outside, you start munching away on an apple you bought from the shop a few doors down.

"Well our race was created an age ago, to fight on behalf of a kingdom lost to history. We were originally made in the thousands, but due to unforseen circumstances, the Great War never happened." Balthazar stares up at the sky, the light glints off the glass in his eyesockets.

"My brethren wandered the earth for years, some becoming priests and trying to understand their place in the world, others became mercenaries and ended up fulfilling their debt. All I can remember was that I awoke in an abandoned cellar, deep underground. As I made my way through the rooms I managed to eventually find the exit, which was guarded by a particularly large dragon."

His shoulders clank against the stone wall as he shifts his weight. "And the rest, as you say, is history."

>>25198144
It's just one apple. And anyway I'm not keeping track of cash yet, I probably never will, it's just too much effort.
>>25198162
Thanks for sticking around.

"So, what's it like making something out of what you're made of?" You ask Balthazar, taking another bite of your apple.

"There's something...divine...about it," the Warforged answers you back, "It's a very hard concept to explain, almost akin to being a doctor or a healer for you, but so much more."

You and Balthazar sit outside for a little while watching people walk past you in the street. A few of them naturally stare at Balthazar in awe, it's like they've never seen a 9 foot tall metal golem before.

"Wait a second...if you woke up in this cellar alone, how do you know your name?"

"I don't even know if I have a proper name, it was simply the first thing I thought of. Whether it was the original name of my creator, or just the product of some subliminal message imprinted onto my conciousness I'll never know"

Once you and the Warforged are done speaking, Urist steps out into the street and looks at the both of you. "I think we're done here for today," he says as he wipes his hands on his apron "I'm off to the tavern for a drink, you guys can do what you like."

It will become a heirloom in his family and for generations will be a symbol of how one good blacksmith helped out a poor peasant.

I've also completely forgotten about the metals. Rolls are required for forging, you will also have to state what type of metal you want to make, and how many rods/ingots you want to make (30 rods or 20 ingots per day).

You decide to make a start on replenishing the metal stock within the workshop.

After a couple of hours you have made a few ingots and rods and have brought the stock levels back up to normal.

30 bronze rods
30 iron rods
30 steel rods
30 bronze ingots
30 iron ingots
30 steel ingots

>I have just amended this as I completely forgot about the different metals.

Hephaestus, I've just got caught up in the archives!

Just wanted to say that you're doing a good job despite the setbacks, it's very fun to read. And that I admire that you keep going after making a mistake, that's real big of you. So many quest authors give up so easily.

Keep it up man, I'm looking forward to more.
>>
>>25199673
Well, it's a great quest OP.
I hope you keep it up.
>>
>>25199585
>>Next time we forge we will be using up the entire day

I was under the impression that we actually spent several days doing the jobs. No way we can make the suit of armor in a day. I thought you kept the time vague because you're not sure how much these things actually take.
>>
>>25199679
>>25199727
Wow, thanks for the praise guys. I've been trying to learn from my mistakes, and as you can see I'm trying to improve my writing. I hope you guys stick around!

>>25199744
I've just deemed that forging takes a day, when we're not on a job. When we are on a job it takes up 1 action, however smithing and engraving, while taking 1 action, don't necessarily take 1 day either.

This is the problem we had from the first thread, which is why I tried to completely re-do the system.

Thread has now been archived. I'll stick around for a bit longer, my brain has now turned to mush so I don't think I can write any longer.
>>
>>25199807
If you need any help OP, I'm a freelance writer. Feel free to email me if you are in a squeeze and I'll gladly help out.
>>
>>25199807
Thanks OP for your work, I enjoyed the tasteful romance bit!
>>
>>25199857
It's hard to plan ahead with this, I've just got to write on the fly because everything is so randomised. I can't even write up a paragraph about a sword you might make, because you might end up doing something completely different with it.

However, I'm open for any advice. What did you think of my writing on the dates and the maces/swords we did? I think I really need to try and embellish the creation of them a little more.
>>
>>25199673
>malleable

Nicely done.
>>
>>25199958
I found your writing quite good, both for the date (interesting yet brief, could perhaps get slightly longer later on when we're more invested there, but the right length for right now) and for the smithing.

Let's *definitely* keep rolling 3d100s in each post, though; rolling one roll each when we might need 15d100 for a job seems excessive.
>>
>>25199958
I'd give you this advice.
When writing about something and you don't know how it's done or how to describe it: Go see it.
We have the internet. So open up a video of somebody
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d7I4Z5t8Xdo
Like this one
Observe.
What sound does the hammer make when it contacts the iron, how high does he raise it, are there sparks, how fast does the iron cool, what posture is the guy assuming, how does the fire look etc... And then you can write about all these things.

If you are still not sure how to proceed, just remember, that the most important thing is to show. And how do humans experience the world around? With senses.
So you can write something up for all of the senses (well not all of them, but most) like:

>The glove chaffed him and he felt the heat penetrating it and biting his fingers.

>He could taste the sweat rolling through his beard.

>He could smell the iron residue in the air, a thing which will undoubtedly give him some weird respiratory disease.

>The hot iron glowed with an orangey afterglow, which it inherited from the fire

>The sounds of the hammer resonated all day, but they weren't as nearly as dousing the hot iron in water and listening to the steam escaping

And I've noticed you don't tell us what the character "thinks", but only what he says and does. This may be on purpose so I don't think it's a minus.
>>
>>25200196
>They weren't nearly as satisfying as*
>>
>>25200100
>Let's *definitely* keep rolling 3d100s in each post

I can support that. There is no difference between rolling them in separate posts or just one no matter what some players want you to believe.

>Fabrique Generale Quest also had best of three system for each action
>Every update consisted of 10 actions
>30 separate rolls every damn update
I tried to convince the author to have players just roll 3d100 and be over with it but since most player loved rolling their stupid dice so much it didn't happen. And now the quest is dead.

>>25200196
fifty shades of anvil?

>>25200232

>>25200100

>And I've noticed you don't tell us what the character "thinks", but only what he says and does. This may be on purpose so I don't think it's a minus.

I'd argue that's a plus; the main character is supposed to be our avatar, so saying what he's thinking (unless it's in response to something we talked about in-thread) doesn't seem like a good idea. Notable exceptions include things like the first view of the mines, because we're not there to see them and go "oooh shiny".

(Of course, if you can find a picture to include, bonus.)
>>
>>25200323
I'll have to try and get in character a bit more just to add a little more depth to him. So far it's just BEARD BEARD BEARD.

And I'm going to rifle through all the image dumps and arms and armour threads that I can to try and have some images to go with the jobs, much like we saw today.
>>
>>25200308
Another suggestion: consider posting the "success levels" table (X-Y terrible, (Y+1)-Z average, etc), the 10% rule for followup smithing (nice idea, BTW), and the example finishers (polish, sharpen, engrave) in the OP or OP+1 of each thread.
>>
>>25200372
>I'll have to try and get in character a bit more just to add a little more depth to him. So far it's just BEARD BEARD BEARD.

True, that would help. I think the best way to do that might be to introduce more of whatever overarching background plot you have in mind, so that we have the opportunity to develop the character accordingly.
>>
>>25200372
Thank you for successfully ignoring the various "kill her" trolls who popped up for the date at the beginning of the thread. A note for the future: you may want to move that kind of thing to the middle or end of threads, because it tends to attract that kind of attention near the beginning, but trolls often taper off later on in a thread.
>>
>>25198860
>>25198929
"donating" doesn't seem like a great idea, but this is the kind of thing where in-kind trades make sense. A spade like that for a year's supply of whatever they're growing for us and Urist.

>It was my pleasure to ignore those people. Especially the first person who said 'punch her in the face'. But I understand what you're saying about leaving it till the end, in future I will do.

Doesn't have to be until the end; the middle is fine. Just suggesting that you'll avoid some of the trolls if you leave romantic endeavors until after some initial non-romance, to give the thread time to find the audience that's going to stick with it. This holds especially true if you're running threads on Saturdays, when Quest Thread General threads typically run.
>>
>>25200524
>I think donating products like this would improve your popularity massively, but may also impact on your 'property' level, as you'd essentially just be giving away lots of money.

It's not a bad idea, but I do also think we ought to try for some trades for things we might need more than money at the moment.

I'd also love to see some more interaction with the other smiths (not just the elven detail-work smith, but the others as well), and some more cross-training with them on complex jobs.

Stop turning good quests into shitty animu romance simulations and maybe your opinion would have a merit.
>>
>>25200882
Stop complaining about normal human interactions in every quest thread and maybe your opinion would have merit.

See, it doesn't work no matter who says it. Participate or don't, but your opinion carries no more weight than any other. Explain yourself and people might listen, but gripes and trolls just get ignored as noise.

In any case: I do agree that romance shouldn't become the focus of the quest, but I am enjoying the broader plot elements that the smithing fits into, because without those it just turns into a mechanical farmville.
