Predator Quest: Episode 24

You are Three-Claw, a Yautja hunter of the Cloud Viper clan. You have been tasked by your clan Matriarch to investigate breaches of forbidden knowledge by clan Weyland on the planet Fey'lenn, or Pandora, as it is known in the human tongue.

The nebula is quiet. You have repelled your invaders at the cost of disrupting the flagship's foldspace engine. You eye your sensors nervously while your teammates work on getting the engine back online.

"How long?" you ask over the comms.

"Half a hour," Burning-Scythe tells you.

"You said half an hour ten minutes ago," you tell him.

"Yes, well, the cooling manif...."

"We have a problem," your mentor interrupts.

"Foldspace signature detected within the nebula. Faint, but it's a large ship; about our size. Can't tell you much more than that."

Do you:

A: Suggest the flagship engage full stealth while you take your ship to scout it out.
B. Suggest the flagship go into combat alert and wait.

>>A:

"Go silent. I'll scout it out," you suggest.

You put your own ship into stealth mode and turn in the direction of the foldspace disturbance, and push forward.

Your sensors detect something - traces of radiation from recent usage of a foldspace engine - snaking through the nebula. You close in on its source, and stop your ship just beyond its weapon range.

It's a Yautja capital ship, of a design you do not recognize. It has the size of a large frigate but the energy signatures of a light battleship. Though it's about the same tonnage as the Night-Prowler flagship, it's far better armed.

It has not detected you yet, and so you take the time to scan it from prow to stern. It has no clan signatures. You suddenly notice a marking towards its midsection, which marks its home port.

It makes the ship as from Yautja Prime, the seat of the empire's power. If it is indeed the case, it's a long way from home.

Do you:

A. Remain out of range and follow it through the nebula.
B. Attempt to open a comm channel with its bridge.
>>
>>25167480

B, I can see no way this could possibly go wrong.
>>

Well, we wanted to know how high the conspiracy went...
>>
>>25167542
That...would be amazing.
>>
>>25167542

That's... entirely possible actually. They could have been prompted to appear by the fight, and the actual "kill fleet" is still some ways away.
>>
>>25167563
There are no yaujta kings - it's a matriarchy, though males can get rather high positions if they're damn good at what they do.
>>
>>25167480
A.

We should have our team hail them, and if they attack the Night-Prowler ship we always have a surprise nuke for them.
>>
>>25167542
>>A. Remain out of range and follow it through the nebula.

You slowly tail the ship as it powers up its engines and falls into a searching pattern. You maintain a certain distance behind it, using its engine trail to mask your already faint energy signature.

It is slowly but surely heading towards your flagship. At this rate, it'll make contact in 25-30 minutes.

Do you:

A. Drop back and warn your mentor of what's coming.
B. Continue tailing the ship.
C. Drop out of cloak and fire a disruptor torpedo
at its engine. (DC: Medium-Hard)
D. Drop out of cloak and fire a fission torpedo at its engine. (DC: Medium-Hard)
E. Attempt to hail it.
>>
>>25167592
It's not a matriarchy. The ruling class are all Hunters.

"Adjudicators: The adjudicators are the administrators and law enforcers of the Yautja. They are world leaders and the ruling class in Predator society. Less than 1% of Yautja are adjudicators, due to their massive worldly role. At this point, they simply no longer have time to hunt off planet, but often foray into the underground hunting grounds, where younger hunters train in order to lend experience to the young ones. Adjudicators are always the leaders of a clan and no adjudicators have ever risen to that position without first having completed at least five Hive cleansings."

Though, this is assuming that the Op is sticking close to the shit described in the wiki and EU.

You drop away from the large ship to a safe distance where you can open a comms beam to your flagship without risking detection.

You make your message brief.

"Large ship from Yautja Prime. Inbound your direction."

You receive a simple acknowledgement. It would be too risky for your mentor to respond with anything more detailed.

Do you:

A. Return to the unknown capital ship and continue tailing it.

Depending on which wiki you use, the accuracy could be wildly varying.

I'm sourcing this quest based on three chief sources:

1. Movies
2. Novels
3. Comics

... In that order. Mostly, I use material from the novel Alien vs. Predator: Prey which has the most information about Predator politics. There, it makes mention of an "Empress" who leads a conglomeration of clans, governed individually by "Matriarchs".

While it's true that males DO have significant influence in Yautja politics, they lead military matters and uphold the various complex rules of honor. But when it comes to politics, it is usually the females who perform these duties.
>>
>>25167763
>>A. Return to the unknown capital ship and continue tailing it.

You return to the unknown ship and resume tailing it. You follow it as it snakes through the nebula, slowly but surely narrowing its course towards your flagship.

Suddenly, your sensors warn you of two additional foldspace signatures falling in from the distance.

The ship in front of you must have detected the same thing, as it brakes its engines hard, and turn quickly towards the new contacts, almost 90 degrees from its current heading.

Do you:

A. Continue to follow it.
B. Scout out and investigate the new signatures.
C. Return to your flagship and get ready to jump.
>>
>>25167724

We should attempt to contact them. We have no idea who they are, and any information we get is beneficial to us. Also, we can try to buy time for the flagship to get away.

Oh shit. Oh shit oh shit oh shit.

I have a bad feeling I was right when I said >>25167542

If they were expecting backup, they wouldn't be reacting like that. There are three factions in this nebula, and its 50/50 whether or not we've been shooting at the right ones.

B. I think it's a good time to see who we're dealing with here...
>>
>>25167918

B. It's entirely possible these two contacts are the third party, and this flagship is the one attempting to destroy us. However, the ships we were just up against we unmarked, unlike the flagship, which makes it marginally more likely this flagship is our friend.
>>
>>25167918

>>
>>25167944
>>A. Continue to follow in silence.

You quietly trail behind the large ship as it ploughs through the gaseous nebula. As you approach the two contacts, you're able to glean more information about them from your sensors.

Both ships are destroyer-sized vessels, slightly smaller than your capital ship. A quick analysis of its radiation composition shows that it's carrying a large number of anti-ship torpedoes.

The ship before you suddenly dims its engine and coasts to a stop.

You detect a comms beam going from the unknown ship to the two destroyers far in the distance. They are speaking.

Do you:

A. Wait patiently for them to finish.
B. Veer to the side and attempt to intercept the comm beam. It will not be an easy task, however, as the nebula is heavily interfering with your sensors. (DC: Medium-Hard)

>>B. Veer to the side and attempt to intercept the comm beam. It will not be an easy task, however, as the nebula is heavily interfering with your sensors. (Fail, with DC: 15)

You slowly veer to the side and attempt to intercept the beam, but the nebula interference is simply too strong. You are unable to intercept the comms beam with any success.

Suddenly, you detect the beam break, and several dozen new signatures appear in the distance, hurtling through the nebula towards the frigate beside you.

They're torpedoes.

The frigate lets loose with its dense array of point defense cannons. It would have shot them all down, were it not for the nebula's effects on the ship's tracking systems, but two torpedoes strike the frigate head on.

The impact rocks the nebula and the resulting shock wave throws your ship backwards. During the chaos, you detect the two destroyers in the distance enter foldspace and escape.

You turn to the frigate. It shows significant damage to its lower frontal decks, and one of its ten bore cannons seem to be inoperative, but is otherwise unscathed.

A. Attempt to open a comm channel with the frigate

He clicks in amusement. "That's a tall story, pup. Where is this ship? Let's find out if we..."

Suddenly, half a dozen foldspace signatures light up all around you. The two destroyers from before plus an escort carrier and three corvettes emerge. They lock on to the frigate and begin to fire.

You feel the tractor field dissipate as the frigate begins combat manoeuvres. The chaos of combat erupts around you. The frigate launches several volleys of its main cannons at the nearest destroyer. Simultaneously, a swarm of torpedoes rise from its back.

DC was 10, so we fail, unfortunately.
>>C. Remain at stand-off range and fire disruptor torpedoes (you have 3 remaining) (Fail vs.DC 10)

You lock on to the carrier and fire a disruptor torpedo in its direction. The torpedo streaks forward, but disintegrates as steams of plasma bolts from its point defence guns knock it out.

The escort carrier begins to turn in your direction. further missiles will be more difficult to penetrate its defensive screen.

Do you:

A. Initiate an attack run to get closer. (DC: Medium)
B. Remain at stand-off range and fire your fission torpedo. (DC: Hard)
C. Remain at stand-off range and fire disruptor torpedoes (you have 2 remaining) (DC: Medium-Hard)

You roll and dodge through the enemy fire to close in on your target. You bank hard to avoid a hail of plasma bolts and take down two seeker missiles closing on you head-on with your gatling cannons. You are now within range to use your cannons.

What do you target?

A. The hangar's launch bays.

You target the hangar's launch bays and line up your guns. You depress the trigger. Your main cannons shake the ship as they roar to life. Two brilliant plasma bolts streak through the nebula and strike the hangar bay head-on.

The hangar explodes outwards and turn into molten slag. The escort carrier can no longer launch fighters.

Suddenly, sharp warnings echo in your cockpit as several wings of intercepters shift from attacking the frigate to attacking you.

You are forced to bank hard and peel off your attack.

Do you:

A. Return to the frigate and attempt to shake off the interceptors.
B. Lure the interceptors away from the carrier and its point defenses and fight them. (DC: Medium)
C. Ignore them and continue to tackle the carrier. (DC: Medium-Hard)

>>B. Lure the interceptors away from the carrier and its point defenses and fight them. (Pass, vs. DC 11)

You bank away from the escort carrier and strafe down an enemy interceptor with your gatling cannon. As you pull away, your sensors report a large silhouette inbound from the distance.

It's the flagship.

You bank hard to avoid an incoming missile and shred another interceptor in the process.

You scan the battlefield. One of the destroyers is bleeding plasma from a gash along its side and the other is missing an engine.

Two corvettes are still making strafing runs at the frigate, which seems to have taken on severe damage along its right flank.

You hear your mentor's voice on comms. "We're here. How can we help?"

Do you:

A. Suggest he pit the flagship against the escort carrier and take it down.
B. Suggest he move the flagship to support the frigate.

"Support the frigate. I'll keep the carrier busy," you tell him.

Your mentor acknowledges. He drops the human battle-cruiser at the edge of the battlefield and gun full throttle for the frigate. Before he leaves, however, he launches a volley of seeker missiles at the interceptors pursuing you. A few are shot down but most manage to hit. There are now only 3 interceptors in pursuit, and the carrier isn't likely to be able to launch more.

After a gruelling dogfight, you're able to take all three down while suffering minimal damage.

You turn back to the escort carrier. It has turned around, and is attempting to escape the battle. You notice the escort carrier is quite agile for its tonnage.

Do you:

A. Disable its engines with a disruptor torpedo (you have 2 left) (DC: Medium-Easy)

Unfortunately, we fail against the DC of 10.
>>B. Pursue it and fire your main cannons at its engines. (Fail vs. DC 10)

You gun your engines in pursuit. The carrier is fast, but you close the gap steadily. You line up your guns with its engines. You depress the trigger and fire. The two plasma lances sail through the nebula, but before they make contact, the space around the carrier warps and expands violently. It enters foldspace, and your two shots sail into the ether beyond.

You turn your ship around and head for the frigate.

Your flagship has swatted one of the corvettes down with a fission torpedo and is closing on one of the destroyers. The frigate, though suffering heavy damage to its right flank, nonetheless turns to deliver a broadside to the other destroyer.

The remaining corvette, its engines on fire, attempts to escape the battle, hurtling headlong towards you.

Do you;

A. Destroy it with your cannons.
B. Disable it with a disruptor torpedo (2 left)(DC: Medium-hard)

>>A. Destroy it with your cannons.

You fire your cannons at the severely damage and turn it into a plasma fireball.

You speed past the wreckage in time to see the frigate loose its broadside against the destroyer. Withering firepower slam into the destroyer and tumbles it bow over stern through the nebula. It re-orients itself and fires a volley of torpedoes at the frigate.

On the other side, you see the flagship trading blows with the destroyer, each launching missiles and attempting to penetrate the other's point defense screen.

>>A. Attack the destroyer targeted by the frigate

You turn towards the frigate and position yourself between it and the destroyer. You supplement your ally's point defenses with your own.

The incoming missiles are vaporized by a combination of your efforts, and the enemy destroyer begins to turn tail and run.

The frigate, however, has no intention of allowing the escape. It fires another barrage of plasma bolts straight into the destroyer's rear, setting off its reactor and turning it into a nuclear fireball.

You turn to the second destroyer, in time to see its point defenses collapse as 3 fission torpedoes slam into its side, destroying it.

The nebula is once more calm.

You open the comms channel as the frigate's captain hails you. "Thanks for you help," he says, "I owe you a debt of honor. I am Flame-Mantle, and this is my ship, the Kraken-Slayer. Those ships are here to recover Night-Star. My mission is to bring him into custody. I would like to extend an invitation to you and your team to board my ship and have a discussion."

Your mentor speaks to you over a second, private comms. "Foldspace engine ready to go, but I can give you a pretty good guess on who these guys work for. Don't anger them."

Do you:

A. Accept his invitation.
B. Decline.

You accept his invitation. You land your ship aboard his hangar. A few moments later, Steel-Arrow arrives on his ship and step out with your mentor.

The three of you are greeted by Flame-Mantle, as he leads you to his observation deck. As you walk through his ship, you see several damage control crew members busy running back and forth.

"We've been hit pretty bad," he tells you. "Would have fared better, but that alpha strike they delivered to spring the ambush was devastating."

The four of you sit down in the observation deck. He takes something from his belt pouch and puts it down on the table.

Your mentor picks it up and examines it. "It's a sigil from the Empress," he tells you.

"I trust this is sufficient to prove the gravity of my mission. I'm here to take Night-Star for questioning."

Do you:

A. Tell him you'll agree to transfer Night-Star to his custody.
B. Tell him Night-Star needs to stand trial for what he has done, and you will not relinquish him.

>>A.

"We will aid the Empress in her request," you tell him. "We can transfer him to you now."

He stands up.

"Thank you for your coop..." Suddenly, another warning flares up.

"Captain! More foldspace signatures inbound!" A lieutenant shouts over the intercom."

"Dammit!" Flame-Mantle mutters. He turns to you. "Right. We all need to get out of here. I'm coming with you aboard your ship to make sure the VIP is secured."

"Lieutenant Commander," he shouts over his comms. "You have the bridge. Enter foldspace and them away from us."

The four of you quickly sprint to the hangar.

Aboard the flagship, Burning-Scythe and Quick-Shadow have already re-tethered the human battle-cruiser and powering up the foldspace engines.

In the meantime, the enemy begins to close in.
