So, what if I had a skeleton big enough to put a city into?

Could I get a necromancer to heebeejeebee it and have a mobile citystate?
>>
>>25063638
That would be one mother-fucking onyx stone for the ages.
>>
>>25063663
a whole military campaign was fought for it!
>>
short answer: yes.

some what long answer: not very likely.
>>
would be like a walking sky scraper... thats almost unimaginable power to raise that skellington
>>
>>25063638
That's a hell of a shnozz on that bone daddy
>>
>>25063638

Where does this city gets its food from?
And it's fresh water?
>>
>>25063638
They do it in Exalted. Well, it's more of a massive corpse. It's called Juggernaut and it's part of the reason why Mask of Winters was able to conquer Thorns.

Let's see...Bas-Lag in China Mieville's series of the same name is built on top of and around a mysterious set of bones jutting up and out of the earth.
>>
>>25063773
Sorry, New Crobuzon which is IN Bas-Lag.
>>
>>25063638

Why not just have a city of skeleton houses? Small creatures, like gnomes, living in the bodies of Gargantuan skeletons? Mobile, provide for benefits, and then you can link up the arms and bodies at night to form a defensive fortification?
>>
>>25063748
Farms in the hollows of the bones where the marrow used to be, and water from rain, perhaps? Or maybe some sort of system that funnels it up through channels in the skeleton's feet and legs, which would require the city to periodically walk through bodies of water to refill.
>>
Something like that happened in Xombie, except it was a floating castle built out of a Nephilim's skull.
>>
A Giant Undead Turtle would be better I think. More stable. Less bouncing around
>>
You know this is basically what the Lich Queen of the githyanki/zerai has, right?
>>
>>25063832
I don't, no.

Is it time for stories?
>>
>>25063748
>>25063795
I dunno about IN the hollows of bones, because most plants need light, and either 1- exposing the innerworkings to light 2 - growing fungi instead might compromise structurally integrity. I'd go for some kind of hanging gardens, possibly from the ribs, or on shoulders.

...I guess really, it depends on exactly how goddamn fuckhuge you're talking. I'm having trouble imagining the scope of a true mobile skeleton city.
>>
>>25063944
It would probably be made out of a titan, to be big enough to fit a city in.

And titans are sometimes mistaken for mountains. So there's some scale for you.

>>

Bah, if we're building a city in a massive moving monster skeleton, I'm going to assume some sort of magical dampening.
>>
>>25064008

A giant set of suspension systems where each limb meets the main body mass.
>>
>>25063773
No, the bones are the one block where they CAN'T build.
>>
I'd like to propose that all the residents of Spooky City are smaller skeletons that splinter off of the Ur-Skeleton. They worship it a la the tree of Sadida in Wakfu.
>>
>>25063638
A concisdent number of necromancers will have to maintain the spell.
>>
>>25063955
Maybe you could chisel in series of terraces, then? Perhaps on the skull or shoulders. You could plan where it wanders in accordance with the seasons, to grow all year-round. Space for livestock to graze is probably kind of difficult though, at least the traditional varieties.

It's Morrowind, there is no way to explain shit.

Presumably the same MAAAAAAGIC that keeps the skeleton moving in the first place.
>>
>>25064119
The Redoran city was built around the carcass of a dead, giant crab. Within its cavernous shell they constructed manors for all their noble houses. As the daedric invasion ravaged the land, they decided to re-animate this leviathan to fight for them.

The warrior house still fell, but their sacrifice made sure the rest of Morrowind made it through that crisis relatively intact.

>>
>>25064257

I meant as a House, Telvanni is fucking dead, sure they got a few wandering elder mages, but really, when was the last time you met a Telvanni that fucking CARED about the House as a whole?

Just like I'm certain there are still a few Hlaalu cum dumpsters, smugglers and businessmen, and wandering former Redoran Warriors, just wandering the world doing what they do.

I always enjoyed playing a Wandering Redoran warrior, sorta like being a ronin or lost samurai without all the GRORIOUS NIPPON bullshit.

Y'know, like a Rogue Knight / Black Knight except somewhat eastern-themed but garbed in armor and weapons made of bone and steel.

It is astoundingly hard to give any sort of theme to House Redoran and their attitude and kit other than "House Redoran"
>>
>>25064217
But magic that mantains structural integrity and keeping a skeleton moving are not the same kind of magic. Keeping the houses together would require the constant output of several Wizards. Would these wizards be used like the Astronomican for 40k?

>>25063638

Alright, let us just try for a good sized city of 20,000. 90% of the population lives in poverty, and the other 10% live pretty decently.

Lets go for the cheapest accommodations possible as the city 'on the move' would then extend itself when it rests for a season. 18000 beds in barracks require 1800 SS, or roughly 144,000,000 cu ft. You would need a Titan that is enormous just for that amount of space, much less anything else. That amount of capacity would make a cubic structure ~525 ft on each side. Including kitchens to feed the masses, sanitation, additional housing, storage for fodder and feed, etc. you are looking at a cube upwards of 800*800*800 to serve your entire group.

Now the legs will provide for a great volume of this depending on thickness, though there will be issues regarding movement unless you use some sort of stabilization method if being used for residential housing. The torso would be able to support outer and inner living, and the pelvis should remain relatively stable for all waste disposal and storage functions.

But that is a fuckhuge titan. And for a completely 'liveable' 24/7/365 facility you can multiple those numbers by five or ten times.

No sir. You are going to need a bit more than one necromancer to do that. And someone to handle where the shit comes/goes out, hot to provide irrigation through the skeleton (pools carved out? How do you fill them?), food, light, etc.
>>
>>25063638
Square cubed law.

But with magic I suppose it doesn't matter one bit.

Are you asking what if you lived in the hollowed out bones, or are you saying built a city around the skeleton/in its' ribcage and piloted around essentially a giant walking city mech?
>>
>>25064308
Redoran's attributes can be described most simply as Honor, Faithfulness and Seriousness.
>>
>>25064607

Don't forget Simplicity and being humble.

There is a reason most of the "rewards" you get in the first few missions of becoming a retainer of House Redoran you get the Vvardenfell equivalent of Chewing tobacco, and it's not just because you are helping the people on the very outskirts of society.

I fucking love House Redoran, even more than I love House Dagoth.

However, i believe that shortcuts and cheating doesn't form right path to become a neither good player, nor DM.

>>25064809
That's why i wrote "I don't know where your skeleton comes from". It doesn't have to belong to creature from said planet/plane of existence, it can be a statue, or something...

Such creature couldn't walk on its own.
>>
>>25064751
>Forgetting fucking magic is animating the bones, and allowing it to walk without muscles, tendons, or ligaments.

Seriously? Are you that fucking autistic?
>>
>>25064852
Could be possible, but assuming its made out of normal human bones then the answer is no. If the skeleton is made out of a stronger material/extremely lighter material then its possible. Or its reinforced magically the fuck and back/strategically placed levitation spells to lessen the actual weight the skeleton feels.
>>
>>25064852
Because the point of the thread is the city inside the skeleton, not the goddamn skeleton itself. Why does it bother you that the skeleton is impossible, and not the frickin' city we're talking about sitting in it?
>>
>>25064897
Because /tg/ is full of autism.

I'm surprised nobody's mentioned On The Backs Of Gods yet.
>>
What about a moving city made out of many, smaller but giant-compared-to-human skeletons?

With 13 legs made of arm and leg bones, scattered skulls thrown around everywhere good measure. In my mind its more or less a giant centipede/snake skeleton with a long line of buildings on top. Miles.

Also with a vaguely human skull on front, jaw bone partly wore away from grinding on the ground. Welp, I have something to doodle in my spare time now.
>>
>>25064852
If something is fun, you use it, and you justify it with magic/nanomachines/cosmic rays/whatever.

As long as you maintain internal consistancy, it's fine. And in a world with gods, dragons, and wizards who can stop time, a giant city skeleton is fine.

Now away with you, fun police.

I agree with you in part, but also agree with the other anon you're talking to. I love the idea of the giant skeleton system, but find that it is better to figure out a reason why this sort of thing can occur before going 'magicaintgottaexplainshit' whenever possible. Sometimes there's just that moment where you're doing something and suspension of disbelief with a new item can throw the game into a lengthy discussion with even calm open-to-anything nerds, and I'd rather dodge it by going 'here's what it is' than always relying on Rule of Cool or "MAGIC!" to get away with it.

Seriously the whole thing is, I can raise up the undead (in this case skeletons), and I have the power to do it to something large enough to allow for a skeleton-city state. You didn't but the OP did and you were responding to it.

Yeah you're not autistic at all, and Fighter in 3.5 can do something more than full or power attack. Something tells me if someone raised the dead in your games your autism would flare up badly.

Anyway, who knows? Maybe it's the Skeleton of a dead god. Maybe way back when, gravity was different. Should we also argue about how Dragons shouldn't be able to fly because they're too large and their wings are too small?
The point is the city. Let's talk about the city.
Now does anyone have any idea how the people that live in this skeleton city get rid of their waste? Also how would the markets/trade work?

You said that the creature which provided the skeleton would not be able to walk on it's own, and stated that 'magic' does not justify said creature being able to walk (With no qualifying statements, of course!)

And yet, you didn't mention that skeletons being able to walk on their own is also justified by magic, leading me to believe you are perfectly okay with this.

Is there some defined level of magic you are working on here that the rest of the thread is not aware of? Perhaps you should let us into your thought process so that we may stand aghast and bathe in your genius? Because clearly, you are the only one who is allowed to decide how much magic in a given argument is too much.

You're a fucknozzle because everyone in the thread was working on the assumption that the setting this scenario is taking place in has enough magic to justify it. By barging in and not accepting this, instead demanding that everyone accept your own rules instead, you are proving yourself to be a goddamn asshole.

Then it makes it more massive, thus making it heavier. The creature wouldn't be able to lift itself from the ground, let alone make a single step. You may remember the old X-men comic book, when someone from Hellfire club made Wolverines skeleton extra heavy. I believe Magneto did same thing on a few occasions. Cheesy examples, i know, but first that came to my mind.

>>25065212
Interesting solution! It's a little like Dune's "spice comes from sandworms", right?
Actually finding such skeleton and finding that its made purely from some precious material presents a shitload of good quality plot hooks. I believe there was some story taking place in our world, that was circling around giant dead body of God himself that was found in the ocean.
H.P.Lovecraft wrote something similar too.

I was right the first time. You're playing by your own rules, here, and even considering that there are other rules to play by is beyond you. Everybody else is WRONG while you are RIGHT, and that's the end of it. And so you stagnate. You desperately try to prove to everyone else how wrong they are, and how things they enjoy are not actually fun, because they aren't correct. You might as well be dead. You don't encourage ideas, you don't provide anything to the discussion, you just sit in your bubble and crash into things.

Arguing with you is clearly pointless. Not even an argument, actually. This right here? It's you barging in and then demanding that we accomodate you and your autism. This is your bubble crashing into the discussion.

They saved hundreds of lives that day. As

A city can't exist without transportation infrastructure; without ports, roads, trains, airports, etc, it has no reason to exist- people move to cities for jobs, there aren't jobs if you can't make money, you can't make money if there aren't outsiders to sell things to or buy things from.

A skeleton walking around would have a society more like a travelling caravan, not a place where people would set up their lives like a city. I have doubts about people who would willingly approach this giant skeleton to trade with its inhabitants, by the way.

These skeleton-dwellers would also have enormous water problems. The surface area that receives direct rain fall when the skeleton stands is miniscule so unless they're building big horizontal shelves like a huge rain collecting sombrero, they're fucked.

It has potential for a BBEG scenario where the people living there weren't aware that it was a skeleton, like they thought it was a big cavern because clay and rock filled in around the bones, then a necromancer came along and got it to stand up, fucking shit up, and the PCs have to escape or stop it or something.

Why do you assume that? Perhaps the various paints wash away over time because fuck, that's a lot of work.

I just imagine a lot of murals slowly washing away in the rain and winds, with the interior skeletal armies being repainted repeatedly like Greek statues. During the holy days of the God of Death they dress in drab, and during the !NotHalloween they burn fires in the skull's eyes to call the dead to their city while freeing their ghosts to roam, visit families and friends, and generally spend the time when the spaces between life and death are minimal.

Thus the bright colors. It's a giant skeleton tower for a festival wherever they stop for the year's festivities.

There would be an obvious need for crack guard teams or adventurers to catch the infiltrators that would obviously be sent to sabotage the wards and runes. Since they are sort of a glowing magical weakpoint in the most literal sense.
>>
>>25065947
I didn't say that. I'm just saying that, to anyone outside this conversation, it'd seem to be just tossed in last minute, and break any level of immersion into a semi-serious setting.

I enjoy fun, but to anyone else this might just be the point of no return.

>>25065957
That makes more sense. All the casters get together, after months of research and planning, and focus on a single, ritualistic casting of Prestidigitation and/or Arcane Mark to, "paint," it all in one go.
>>
>>25065925

You seem to be falling into the trap of excessive use of the phrase Mary Sue. While I can see your point of it perhaps being out of place in some settings, to call the merely eccentric Sueish is an overreaction.

I like this idea, if you don't mind I've imagined it up a bit.

Various classes of residents live on different levels of it, higher classes closer to the top.

The lowest live on the feet, clinging to the outside and struggling to stay on, not welcomed by the rest of its society.

The low class would live in the hips where they don't receive much light because it's blocked by higher levels. Waste from above filters down on them and they deal with the immigrants and such.

There wouldn't be a whole lot between the hips and the ribcage, a divider between the poor and the middle class, with a column of buildings around the spine. Thin spindly columns of various materials support structures higher up in the torso, some residents live in makeshift buildings attached to these, precariously sitting hundreds of feet in the air.

Further up, in the ribs the city would have more structure and protection from the elements. The buildings here would be sturdier and there would be more order. Each rib could be one vertical layer of this portion of the city, giving many of them direct access to open air and sunlight.

The upper classes would live high in the ribcage, getting a clear view of the sky above. A different class of peasants, criminals and cast-outs would cling to the outside of the shoulders and be constantly fighting the city's guards who try to drive them off.

The skull would be the home of the nobility and ruling class, with few actual inhabitants and giant palaces attached to the inner walls, long narrow walkways connect them above an open cavernous skull and drop down to the rest of the city. Access up here is only by a central elevator or by flight.

Up on the top, the sombrero, the nobility keep gardens and their slaves who farm for them.

I also think there would be some layered light restriction, giant sombrero and layered skeleton city and all. It works with how macabre/celebratory the place is.

Yanki then, not Zerai.

The fun thing is that you pretty much can't tell it's a corpse anymore, since they've turned it into one big fortress. With the astral plane having subjective gravity, the fortress spans across the ENTIRE corpse.
>>
>>25064452
You are way off on your estimates. The Nimitz class aircraft carrier is ~70 million cubic feet, houses about ~5600 people, can operate for 25 years before needing resupplies, and does so while being filled to the brim with military equipment. Assuming naively that volume and populace are a linear relationship, housing 20,000 people would take a volume of ~250 million cubic feet. As a cube, that's 630ft in all dimensions.

Of course, this skeleton isn't going to be full of aircraft or anti-other-giant-skeleton missile systems or radars or whatever else, so in the end that's a whole lot of room that's freed up to turn this place from livable with an emphasis on function to comfortable if a little tight. And, a human-like skeleton will have non-cubic dimensions. They'll have a ratio of something like 10 units tall : 3 units wide : 1 unit deep, so... close to about 2000ft*600ft*200ft...

Yeah. A skeleton less than half a mile tall will handle about 20,000 people at least as comfortably as a Nimitz cruiser.
>>
>>25066139

It would be interesting if the skeleton was completely unaware of the city inside of it, or in the other direction, knew but was trying to get rid of it but is kept in check by the controllers, but something happens and a controller is unavailable and it starts ripping the city out of its chest so the PCs have to regain control or gtfo.

>>
>>25066305

Ah yes, the flying island, I have seen it with my own eyes and even stood upon it when it first came to these lands.

On its surface is an empty city. It carries no armies, it has no weapons, it's as if everyone disappeared suddenly centuries ago, leaving tables set for dinner, shoes left by the door, carts lying in the middle of the streets.

it just floats above a city days or even weeks and then the next time you return the city it hovered above is inexplicably gone, as if it never existed, just a barren mud flat with the occasional scrap of building materials sticking out of the ground.

No one has lived to tell the tale of how the flying island destroys cities, all I can tell you is that when it appears on the horizon, you need to run.
