It's time for Blacksmith Quest!

You are Alaric Tyvin and you've just completed a 7 year apprenticeship under Master Smith Helbrecht. You now find yourself in the world without a job and you must prove your worth to become a Master craftsman.

First up, a few details:

>Male
>20 years old
>Knowledge in forging, smelting and finishing products.
>If you wish to learn more specific trades, you will have to seek them out yourself.

So now /tg/, it's up to you. But first, roll 1d100 to see what kind of glorious beard you have. Every Blacksmith should have one!

Despite your youth you have managed to grow a most fantastic and awe inspiring beard and moustache. You sometimes think that there might be some Dwarven blood in you, which again would explain the tendency for smithing.

Master Helbrecht's workshop is located in a small hamlet, Hillstone, which itself is based on the outskirts of a much larger city, Belerin.

Belerin is a main trading outpost and a very well populated city, holding close to some 40,000 people. There is a forest to the east and south of Hillstone and there is a small quarry to the west, in which you remember gathering ore for Master Helbrecht.

>Action, O beared one.

>>25030736

>>

Head to Belerin, look for someone who needs some smithin'.
Stroke beard on the way.
Grab some basic materials from workshop
>>
>>25030725
Girdle your luscious beard with a strap of leather and head for the big city. You're gonna strike it big time there!
>>
>>25030736
You have no access to an anvil, Helbrecht has expressly forbidden you from his workshop now that you are a journeyman. You may have to find somewhere else, you can still gather ore if you want.

>>25030746
See above, and this kind of detail will take weeks, if not months of work (read: fuckawesome rolls)
>>
>>25030746
No, let's forge a completely circular sword instead that can be thrown like a chakram!

>>
>>25030749
>>25030754
You run your hand down your glorious beard, like some kind of Chinese General contemplating his next plan.

Master Helbrecht gifted you some tools when you became a journeyman, you have a pickaxe, a hammer and a few other bits and bobs.

You also have 300 silver pieces, that you have saved up when particularly pleased customers had tipped you on the side, over the past 7 years.

You start the journey towards Belerin, you should arrive there in a few hours.

>These rolls!

As you make your way to Belerin your thoughts start to wander. You start to think of the opportunities that await you, and also of the new sights that you will witness.

But, as all men are wont to do, your thoughts start to turn to that of Rosie, a young barmaid who used to work in Hillstone. You used to be childhood friends and she'd often pop into the workshop while MAster Helbrecht was away, to see how you were doing. She left the town a few years ago and no one had heard anything from her since.

You are abruptly awoken from your daydreams when a heavily armoured soldier blocks your way.

"Halt, who goes there?"

>You are at the gates of Belerin
>These guys are armoured to the teeth, Belerin is almost fanatical about the presentation of their guards.

"I am Alaric Tyvin and I come to this city to practice my trade"

The soldier looks at you and weighs you up. After a few seconds he shouts back to the guards behind him, "Open the gates!". He steps to the side and you step up to the massive oaken doors of Belerin.

They creak open as the guards heave to pull the massive wooden slabs aside. You stand in awe as you see the town stretched before you, vendors applying their trade, smiths tempering steel outside, prices of goods being shouted at full volume.

The main street is in front of you, it stretches up all the way to Belerin Castle, at the top of the hill in which the town is based upon.

>>
>>25030877
You head further into the path in front of you and start to keep an eye out for the various smiths who have set up shops here.

You talk to every blacksmith you see, you judge their wares and compare your beards to them. You tell them you are a Journeyman smith and are looking for some work within Belerin.

>The information on the smiths will be on the next page, they are all willing to accept a Journeyman, however it will be up to you to decide which one to go for, or even if you want to join a shop at all.

>Master Smith Urist
>Male, Dwarf
>After the Human/Dwarven alliance was founded, trade routes flourished and trade between the two races bloomed. It was shortly after this alliance, that Urist found his way to Belerin and wanted to apply his trade.
>Jack of all trades, Urist will smith anything that he is asked to, yet he has no discerning 'mark' that elevates him beyond the others yet.

>Master Smith El'Galia
>Female, Elf
>A Elven female who has been in the city for as long as anyone can remember. Tall, lithe and due to her Elven looks and heritage, is very easy on the eyes, leading to a lot of customers simply coming to her shop and forgetting to order something.
>Crafts the finest jewellery in all of the city, majority of her customers are women.

>Master Smith Van Gan
>Male, Barbarian
>A gigantic colossus of a man, covered in symbolic and tribal tattoos. The offspring of the Chieftan of the Barbarian Hordes that had allied with one of the main Human cities during a Crusade. After the Chieftan died during a particularly nasty incursion, Van Gan was enstrusted to a lowly Private, John Hessian, now the Captain of the town guard. Van Gan was brought to Belerin and ended up becoming a Blacksmith.
>Due to his strong ties within the town guard, and due to his enormous frame, he is often entrusted to do wotk to the fortifications of Belerin (cannon work, iron banding, some stonework, etc)

We will join the dorf, He has no speciality. This suits us perfectly since we are to green to specialice for now, must build experience first.
Also we experience is in hand we can specialice together with the jack of all trades dorf. I am sure that his dorfish smithing blood(and ours) will manifest if we stand by his side

he is probably also the one with the best beard
>>
>>25031096
>best beard
Aside from US, of course.
Great beards work together.
>>
>>25031074

>Master Smith Anamman
>Male, Human
>A tall, swarthy man, adorned with charms and amulets. His long black hair is plaited into dreadlocks that run down his back and tied together with a custom-forged steel band. Hailing from the desert nation of Al'k'Azir to the south, Anamman has applied his unique blend of smithing to the weapons he forges.
>Has a number of unique smithing techniques that improve the quality and the finish or both iron and steel weapons.

>Master Smith Feland
>Male, Human
>A pale skinned, blonde haired smith, who is the latest of a very powerful bloodline within Belerin. Due to his social status he has been employed by the King to solely produce armour for the town guard and Belerin's soldiers.
>Very good at producing armour, also does a fair bit of engraving work as well.

Urist is probably the best for starting out, to get experience with a wide variety of techniques before we specialize.

However, you missed out the most important detail. How big are their beards?
inb4 the elven woman has the largest beard
>>
I'll leave the choices up for a little bit, it looks like you guys are having fun arguing over the Master.

Also, if this quest takes off, this won't be the last you heard of these guys. If you stay in Belerin I'm sure you'll see more of them.

>>25031114
>>25031126

Urist has a beard that (almost) rivals your own.

El'Galia has no beard, not even a slight lip fuzz.

Van Gan has a beard, but not nearly a threat to yours.

Anamman has a Jack Sparrow-esque beard, complete with braids.

Feldane has a musketeer style moustache and muttonchops.

>I love how this is becoming Beard: The Quest!
>>
>>25031142
But Anamman has totally bitchin' dreadlocks, you can't just ignore those completely. Besides, being trained under a superior weaponsmith is good for getting in favor with nobles and adventurers, that's important stuff.
>>
>>25031172
Yes. I love my beard
>namefagging unlocked

This is turning into my favourite quest!
>>

The very first thing you had us do was roll for beard size. What did you think was going to happen?

>>
>>25031203

>>25031177

>>
Its Dorf time!
>>
>>25031299

>>
Master Smith Anamman.
I can't say no to dreads.
>>
>>25031229
When we and the dorf have become beardbrothers,
I vote that we stir up a competative mood in the smithy, tyr outdoing eachother for a month. Our results might show us what direction our specialization lies

>>
>No love for Feldane or El'Galia
>1 vote for Van Gan, the Barbarian Blacksmith
>3 votes for Anamman,.

After going over all the choices in your head, you decide to visit the Dwarven smith.

As you make your way down the street you can make out his beard before you can even see his face.

You stand in front of him as he adds the finishing touches to a sword he's working on.

"Aye laddy, back for more are ye?" He says with a thick Dwarvish accent. His mouth barely visible through the thick, Dwarven locks.

"Yes, I think my skills would best be improved working with you Urist." You reply back to him, your beard bristles in anticipation.

"That's Master Urist to you, ya cheeky little bugger, there's tools in the back, a spare anvil and a shit load'a ore we gotta get through".

You head into the shop and get tooled up.

"Alright laddy, this should be an easy one for ya"

You strap your leather apron on ready to start the work.

"A few adventurers came in today, they need to get 5 bronze platebodies sorted out. They're around the town for a few days, so they wanna get these by the end of the week." He flips through a small pad of paper he has on his person and scribbles something with a small pencil, almost worn down to the nub.

He looks up and notices you still staring at him. "Well? Waddy'a waitin' fur?"

You hastily turn around and pull a few lumps of ore from the piles in the corner of the workshop.

It's smithing time.

Right, at the moment you have access to 3 skills.

Forging
Smelting
Finishing (Polishing, Sharpening)

You have 0 points in each of these skills for now. For every 25 points you get in them, up to a maximum of 100, you are able to make 1 more roll, up to a maximum of 4 rolls.

You will roll 1d100 for the forging of the ores.
You will roll 1d100 for the smelting of the platebodies.
You can then roll up to 5 finishing rolls, but only 1 for each 25 points you have in those skills.

We'll forget about time constraints for now, ignore the '1 week thing'.

You will always succeed in the job. But the rolls will determine the quality of each successive step.

So first up, 1d100 for the forging of the ores.

After a number of painstaking hours you emerge with a set of four, very-high quality bronze platebodies. The light-brownish hue accentuated by the glow of the forge.

You place them onto the table within the workshop, give them a final polish and head off into town.

You head to the tavern with the intent on having a few pints.

You make your way onto the main street and see a few pubs you can choose from. Each of them is usually frequented by a select group, and each of the Blacksmiths you 'interviewed' will most certainly be here, along with a number of other shop owners.

>Death's Door (Van Gan)
>The Last Stop (El'Galia)
>The Dented Shield (Feldane)

Jewelry also require very precise and elaborate work for good pieces. Along with high purity smelting foir superior quality of the piece.

Delicate work that requires dexterity... It's perfect for an elf and a craft that a dwarf or regular smith would definitely lack..

You step into the Last Stop, it's a relatively small tavern with lots of intricate woodwork adorning the walls.

You buy yourself a drink and look around the place to see who else is in here.

You notice someone in the corner with long blonde hair, it can only be El'Galia.

You walk over to the table and cough slightly to announce your presence. She turns her head and sees you standing there.

"Alaric, nice to see you again!" She smiles as she speaks to you, she stands up and gives you a slight hug. Your heart skips 3 or 4 beats.

"Come on sit down" She leads you to the seat by your hand, as if you were some kind of child.

"I understand you went to Ulric, what was it about him that made you want to be his Journeyman?" She takes a gulp of her drink (milk) and smiles at you over the table.

"Humph!" She pouts and turns away from you as you start to slightly poke fun.

"No I'm sorry, I didn't mean it like that. Tell you what, if I end up staying in Belerin I'll give you your first proper order. How's that sound?"

She quickly faces back towards you as her hair flicks over her eyes for a split second before drifting back down to the sides of her face. "Really? Do you mean that?"

"I promise" you reply. She smiles at you and takes another mouthful of the drink, her eyes never leaving yours.

Backlog. Any smith worth his salt, especially in a major city, is going to have a backlog, even if it's just shoeing horses, nails, or even screws(even if those are a bitch to make without machines). We free up some of his time and clear that mess out, as a good apprentice should, and our master smith can teach us what he knows.

You notice Urist has a lot of orders that aren't difficult, they just take a lot of time. Taking that into consideration you think it'd be better to smelt some bars and then help him do some smithing.

You load ore into the massive forge and start piling up bronze and iron bars in the corner of the workshop. In a few hours you've actually got a fair few done, that'll do wonders for Urist's workload.

You place another 2 bars down into the pile when you see a figure appear at the door. "How can I help?" You start to dust your hands off as you walk towards the figure.

The man standing in front of you is one of the town guard, but he has a large, silver, 4-pointed star on his breastplate. "Is your Master in?" The man enquires.

"I'm afraid he's out, but I'm looking after the place" You motion around to the shop.

The man looks around, surveying the place. "Indeed." He mutters. "Anyway, I have an order for you, I need a set of 7 pairs of bronze gauntlets for the new recruits, and I'll need them in a few weeks."

You start to repeat what he says as you jot it down in the note book, "7...bronze...gaunlets....few weeks...got it!" You place the pencil and the notebook in your pocket.

"I'll be up at the castle when you're done, just ask for Captain Tobias." The man turns around, hands behind his back and walks out of the shop.

Shortly after, Urist walks back into the shop. "Good work laddy," he says as he spots the pile of bars in the corner "that'll free up some time for us."

You hand him the notebook and he thumbs through the pages. "Well I don't see why we shouldn't get to work on those guantlets, they can be tricky little buggers so I'll give you a few tips."

You start to smith the small, fiddly parts that go into joining the gauntlets fingers and joints together. Urist starts to work on the large pieces of the gauntlet.

He looks over and see you making very good progress on the joints, "Hey you're better than I expected!" he starts to laugh as he shapes the bars into the necessary parts.

You eventually have all the pieces needed to put together the gauntlets. "Now here's where it gets really fiddly" Urist mentions as he pulls out a much smaller hammer. You study closely as he hammers all the joints, pins and parts for the gauntlet into place, the end result is a fully function gauntlet.

"Now you try."

You should try a more sophisticated dice system. It needs to be somewhat reliable and still allow for crits.

The bare-bones of one I'm currently working on is this: First three d20. 11 and above is a success. Crits either remove or add two successes (20 counts as three successes: 1 normal +2 crit). This means there are 14 distinct possible outcomes (-6 till +9; no -5 and no +8).

About 80% of the results would be within the 0-3 range while crits easily move it out of that range. There is about a 6% chance for -1/+4 and 3% for -2/+5.

You grab the rocks and pile them near the forge, and add a couple more for good measure, you're no where near as good as he was.

People are still walking through the market place and you are smelting these bars.
The sun disappears behind the horizon and you can hear the merry-making of the tavern-goers, and yet you are still smelting.
Urist comes back in the morning and you are there....still smelting.

"Have you been here all night boy!?" Urist almost sounds angry, you get the faintest whiff of ale from his breath, Dwarves barely let it touch their tongues.

You rub your bleary eyes and give him the notebook. He looks at it and his eyes open wide.

"Shit, looks like we forgot about one." He looks around at the massive pile of steel ingots and rods you have laid next to the forge.

"Get a few hours kip upstairs, I'm gonna need your help for this one...". Urist starts to pile up the bars nearer the anvils as you make your way upstairs.

You find a small room with some blankets in and just fall into them, going to sleep as soon as your head hits them.

Despite your gargantuan efforts and your best attempts, the full suit of armor still eludes you.

You have managed to get the platebody and legs in about 20 hours, an incredibly difficult tasks, worthy of the gods themselves.

Urist wipes his brow, "We're not going to get this done without some extra help."

"Go down to one of the other blacksmiths, we'll see if they have some time to spare."

>Choose a blacksmith to help you out for the last day.

You don't have to be faithful to real-times OP, just estimate the work and balance it so it doesn't take the same time to make a fucking platemail than doing just a pair of gauntlets. Besides that, you're golden.

For exact timelines I'd need a bit more information on exactly what we're looking at. Hoplite style armor is pretty simple and could be done in a few days, but something like pic related with full articulation and screws could take 6 months or better. Also requires that the person be there to fit for it since that stuff has some really close tolorances.

Maile is also very time consuming because it involves wire, and lots of it.

That said, unless we're going for ultra-realism, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

>Pretty much unanimous.

You head over across the street to El'Galia's shop. You knock on the door and she quickly answers.

"Alaric! It's so good to see you!" She looks up at you and notices your coal stained face and your bleary eyes. "What happened to you?"

"You know how you always wanted to work on armor? Well now's your chance..."

__________________________

"Ya had ta bring the Elf didn't ya laddy?" Urist peers up at you after doing the finishing touches on the platebody.

"She's a proper....." El'Galia cuts you off before you can finish the rest of the sentence "I'll have you know I'm as good as any other smith on the street!".

Urist sighs and hands her a hammer. "Now we've got the rest of the suit to finish, much smaller pieces this time so try not to hit them too hard."

"I'll hit the metal first, Alaric you hit it where I hit it and Ellie you hit it where Alaric hits it." Urist gathers you around the anvil.

"It's El'Ga....." She is cut off as Urist hits the metal first. "Oh!" El'Galia exclaims as she almost misses her first hit.

Pretty soon you've worked up a fantastic pace and you can see the metal forming very quickly.

>Smithing success!
>+0.5 to forging, for the awesome forging skills.
>+0.5 to smithing.
>Time to finish the damn suit.

You each stand over the finished suit of armour with pride, "Thank God we got that finished!" Urist shouts, breaking the moment completely.

"Time for the finishing touches, Ellie, I think you might be able to help with that. Do you have any engraving templates or anything like that lying around?" The Dwarf breaths on a rag and polished the knee of the armor.

"I might have something in the back of the shop..." She quickly heads out of the door and you and Urist clean yourself up.

Have thought of using the first three rolls?
A botch will cancel out the highest roll.
Some idiot rolls a 1.
Someone else rolls a 56
And someone rolls a 98

the 98 would be cancelled by the 1. But 56 would remain as our result
>>
>>25034769
The 1 should be only cancelled by a 100... Just saying.
>>
Right time to unlcok a new finishing skill;

Engraving.

Using engraving, you can inscribe or chisel on a pattern onto metal. This can be as simple as carving your initials into the armor, or as complex as a full blown floral motif.

>>25034749
Which is exactly what El'Galia has in store.

"Here we go!" She hands a few stencils and lays them over certain points of the armor. The chest has a central motif and the joints of the armor have a few patterns adorning them.

She hands out a few, vary sharp looking tools and tells you to be very gentle.

"It's been a while since I've done this" Urist says and studies the tool quite carefully. "If I were you laddy, I'd concentrate on somewhere where the detail won't be noticed so much."

>1d100 for engraving attempt.

>Going with the average of first 3 rolls, lucky you.

Your engraving is inaccurate, the depth is not uniform and even though you are following the stencil it just doesn't look right.

Thankfully, you're working on the joints near the ankles, so no one should see what a shit job you've done.

"Don't worry Alaric, these things take time" El'Galia smiles at you as she deftly starts to carve the main rose motif into the chestplate.

At the end of the day you are left with a fine suit of steel armour. Expertly smithed and with an average floral motif throughout, it's a job well done.

"Thanks Ellie, we couldn't have done it without ya!" Urist thanks the elf and starts to place the armour back onto it's stand.

"Well it's been a long few days, I'm gonna call it a night" Urist takes his gloves off and places them on the anvil. "You kids can do what you want, Alaric make sure you lock up."

Urist heads upstairs as El'Galia wonders what he means by 'kid'. "I better be off now as well Alaric, I'm tired after all that hard work, maybe armour isn't for me after all."

"Thanks for helping us out El'Galia, and don't be too hard on yourself, you make a pretty decent armoursmith" You smile at her as she walks out.

You breath a sigh of relief and look at the suit of freshly polished armour as it gleams in the moonlight.

"Wow, what a day."

I something is the focus of a story I want it done (somewhat) right. I'm couldn't care less how unrealistic smithing is in any other quest or game, if your main focus is smithing you should look up the basics of it. Just enough to know more than most of your readers but enough to have at least some resemblance of realism.
If you look up enough about medival smithing to bullshit your way through the rest you are golden. Right now even people without any knowledge about smithing will notice how this just doesn't work.

The fact that in a single thread several rolls corresponded to the worst and several to the best result on your chart would be something to complain about but you already want to improve that.
>>
Good feedback, I like it.

I'll work on that 'purple prose' stuff, just had a quick Google and now I'm seeing it everywhere.

As we did a shit load of forging for Urist, I think he'll be fine running the shop for a while, so inter-blacksmith relations will be the name of the game in the next thread.

I will read up as much as I can on medieval blacksmithing and rudimentary techniques.

I just want to run something past you for this revamp. Say a guy comes in asking for an iron platebody, we'd get the first 3 d100's and get the average, this would then give us the quality of the job.

But if we wanted to do extra work to it, such as engraving, should we do another set of 3 rolls, or is that just too much dice rolling?

>>25035162
Seconding this but giving it a 3/10. It wouldve been a 5/10 since the whole thing was utterly average with absolutely nothing to deviate from the sea of quests it swims in, but the amount of dorfwankery going on makes it nigh unbearable. I doubt I will be back for thread 2.
>>
>>25035146
Could we also on chance of insane success rolls take that as a stand-alone? Otherwise we'll never make something good, just churn out average stuff unless we nail 3 dice rolls.

Another set of 3 rolls, in my opinion. It's there to keep the balance so we don't just make absolute shit every fourth try randomly.

When is the next thread?

By platebody are we talking just a breastplate or something a bit more elaborate?

As for dice, I'd say just 1 to see how long it takes and an extra dice for how well done anything extra is(like tempering, welding if we're working with maile, engravings, etc).

We've gotten past the apprentice stage, so I think we can assume we know how to work metal, so we should only have to roll difficulty on something we haven't tried before(like a new style of armor or new method of tempering/engraving) and we can just skip rolls on more mundane stuff(like smelting, baring something special).
>>
>>25035146
If you take the average, how would 1s and 100s count? If they count as crits there will be a huge jump in probability from high results, which would be pretty much impossible, to crits, which happen 5.9% of the time. If you just ignore crits you will take a lot of excitement out of it, in my opinion.
>>
>>25035205
Stick around, thread 2 might be more your cup of tea.

>>25035206
>>25035271
I'd open up the rolls need to get a critical success.

So say out of 3 d100's we take the average, as above. The apply it to the rolls table:

Something like 1-10 would be a critical failure, which is damn near impossible with 3 d100's. (inb4 nat 3)

But we could have more room for description within the 'success' range, it wouldn't just be 'you complete the task to an average standard' it might be a slight difference in the ore, so the metal turns out with a slight tint of colour, we might end up with more metal than necessary so we might make a few adornments for the armour. That kind of thing.

>>25035252
So far we've been talking standard platemail, just one sheet of metal. I think if it comes to the story where we need to smith a proper high-quality piece, we'll attack it over several months, making rolls here and there to further it along.

How does that sound?
>>
Damn, didn't roll.

So if we say 1-10 is a complete and utter failure in whatever skill. If it's forging, the bars don't get made. If it's smithing, the metal shatters because we hit it too hard.

If it's 11-40 say, we'd make the armour but it would require a bit of polishing to bring it up to standard.

41-70 would be the same as the above, but we'd need to spend a little more time hammering out the edges or something.

71-200- we'd need a big section in the middle to justify having an average. Nothing bad, but nothing spectacular either.

201-250 would mean there are some other elements in the ore that got mixed up, but the new colour/tint/patina elevates the product to a higher standard.

251-270 would mean we have some left over metal pieces, we could take our time and fashion those into other pieces onto the armour for a more aesthetically pleasing product.

271-285 would be a combination of the 2 above. The quality of the products would be astounding.

286-300 would be absolutely perfect. But I'm having a hard time specifying what that means exactly.

Of course there are just placeholders, but that's what I'm thinking of going for. Does anyone disagree?

One day, I do wish to Blacksmith and have my own forge and smith my own stuff, so I have great interest in this.

As for rolls, If you take the route of multiple D100's and take the average. Maybe apply a litlte bit of crit success/failures if you get any. So say 5, 40, 70. You make it, but fucked up part of it and need to adjust a part or messed up a little. But if you get two crits, make it a greater effect?

I don't know, I've had too much whiskey to care.

Please no averaging rolls. The result will be in the range of 40-60 for almost all dice checks. Either do the best of 2 or 3 or just take the first roll.
I think it would be better to give us bonuses depending on our skill, how much time we invest, the difficulty of the order.

I find it hard to believe that a Journeyman who spent 7 years learning to smith can absolutely and utterly fail at forging. 7 years of learning a skill is just 3 years short of mastery of the skill.

Or at least don't have our skill start at 0, come on.
>>
>>25036273

>>
>>25036273
>and utterly fail at forging.

>>25036273
>Or at least don't have our skill start at 0, come on.

Having us vote on which bit of smithing our original Master (The guy we apprenticed under) taught us more about would be good.

Like he showed us how to do a lot of basics, but was more adept at teaching armory or something and so we know how to make armor better than other journeymen or something.
>>
>>25036319
I think the 3 d100's represent the fact that you've had a lot of training, but every once in a while something just goes wrong.

I think in this revamp, we'll have every 4 points in a skill gives you +1 to every roll to do with that skill. So maxed, you'd have a +25, which on a max of 300 isn't too bad.
>>
>>25036273
Highest 1 out of three is even worse than average. Just look at how you only have extremely good results now: http://anydice.com/program/1b85
I didn't want to mention it anymore but I thought quite a bit about why I dislike most dice-systems used in quests and >>25034178 solves the issues I have with them. It's easy, reliable and crits still matter.
>>
>>25036302

You mean this >>25035530 ?

That's just averaging the rolls, meaning that we will almost never get anything of outstanding quality.
Someone who knows how to make something, can make them on regular basis with the same quality. I mean, you don't expect for master wood carvers to be able to make just few high quality carvings a year and the rest just mediocre stuff even if they tried, right? If you have the skill, making high quality products is not a fluke.
I think the time we have to make the order should play a big, if not the biggest factor, determining the quality.

We need modifiers, I think. How much time we got, the quality of our tools, our general well-being and mood should play a role too, unless it makes it too complicated.

>>25036421
Yeah, you're right, best of 3 is not good either. Generally, I dislike rolling dice at all but it is hard to play without them.
>>
>>25036365
The passive +1's sound really good actually.
>>
>>25036487
What I'm trying to say is that we our skill level should warrant our output. If we're a journeyman, our products should be near that level unless we spend a lot of time or just get really inspired or something.
If we're a master, most of our products should be at master level.

With the average of rolls system, we'll probably just make average stuff more than anything regardless if we're at skill 0 or 100
>>
>>25036487
Well then, should we just increase the rolls needed to smith a complete success?

So instead of having 285-300 be a perfect score, we'll have 260-300 instead.

We'll get boosts if our smithing skill is high enough.

We'll probably get specific boosts if we get another blacksmith involved, or we get training specifically on that item (say we might have a +5 to smithing rolls for gauntlets, as Urist talked us through it)
>>
>>25036487
Yeah, I don't like most dice-systems for exactly the reasons you listed. That's why I made a system where most of it is üretty average and the really outlandishly good results only happen 1 out of 8000 rolls (-6&+9) while still presenting a variable for rolls to succeed and fail. A crit doesn't mean auto-success. Rolling a single crit is just as good as having three successes. Only rolling several crits will result in weird stuff.

I originally even went with 3d100. There would only be 4 outcomes pretty much all the time.
0 - No success
1 - Boring minimum success
2 - Decent success
3 - Good success
This is good enough for most stuff. A single crit could be balanced by the other two rolls but allows for up to two failures or 5 successes. More than one crit is too unlikely to matter most of the time.

>>25036585
How does this change anything? I don't see how taking more rolls or changing how many points you need for a perfect score relates to his complain that rolls should matter less.
>>
>>25036662
OK, wait I'm getting confused after a long days quest-fagging.

What kind of system are we talking here?

Talk me through it, but slow down a little.
>>
>>25036585
Maybe. We'll see how it works.
Maybe we could get rare opportunities to learn Traits or Perks?

I'm not really good a dice systems or anything, never played any PnP games at all, only familiar with /tg/ quests but I know I don't like averages. On their own they are boring but if you're going to work in modifiers and bonuses then it can work but they shouldn't be just constricted to our skill level.
Say, we have a short deadline and need to make it fast, we will get negative modifier (say, -15 or something), our own skill gives us +10, but we are hangover after last night partying -8, we try to get help from other blacksmith and go to the elf lady +20, apparently last night when we were drunk we thought it was best idea to draw a beard on her face with permanent marker and she refuses to help -20, so we go to somebody else instead +15. In the end we're sitting at +2 modifier.

>>25036662
>How does this change anything? I don't see how taking more rolls or changing how many points you need for a perfect score relates to his complain that rolls should matter less.

Well, it does change a lot. Going from 285-300 to 260-300 means that instead of almost never getting perfect score, it will be just rare.
>>
>>25036903
OK, I think in the second thread (as it's going to be more dialogue based) we'll see how the modifier-based rolling system goes.

Anyway, that's it for me. Thread has been archived. The next thread will be next Saturday, approximately the same time.
>>
>>25036708
Roll 3 dice. Each has a 50% chance to gain a success. This means you can have 0-3 successes. What those mean depends on your skill.

For example going with your skill range of 0-25 you could have each task need a certain number of points to work. For example a basic sword would need 3 points. If you count each success like, for example, 3 skill points someone without any points would have a 7/8 chance at making this basic sword. The maximum this person could normally achieve would be a task that would take 9 skill points.

Going with this the rolls would still matter: They would make the difference between a barely making a sword and making it really well (if you have three successes).

However, this would be utterly boring. Someone with a skill of 5 would always be able to make swords and someone without any point would never be able to make a ornamental cuirass that needs at least 12 points to succeed.

This is were crits come into play. Each crit counts as an additional 2 successes or as 2 failures. Using three d100 there is a 5.9% chance to have a crit. Using d20 the chance is 14.3%. With a single crit - using my example above - someone with 0 skill could create an ornamental cuirass. On the other hand someone with 5 skill-points could fail at making a sword.

The theoretical limits with crits are 4 failures and 9 successes 0.000001% using d100; 0.0125% using d20 This means a unskilled Smith could make a functioning master-work clock (skill requirement 27 skill points). It is just extremely unlikely.

In conclusion: You have clear boundaries set by your skill as a smith. You can overcome them every now and then but you can't suddenly create perfect master-work swords because someone rolled a single crit. Also you don't have to throw around those gigantic numbers. I think 0-3 are far more easily to relate to then 496 out of 600.
