Hey look! It's VALKYRIAN MERCS QUEST! Since it's pretty likely I won't be running this weekend, I'm going to forgo today's side chapter for a main chapter.

Archive: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Valkyrian%20Mercs%20Quest
Pastebin: http://pastebin.com/mdzgR517

Don't know what Valkyria Chronicles is? Check it out here! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valkyria_Chronicles

You are JAGER STURMFUHRER, leader of the fledgling mercenary company DEMONS OF RANDGRIZ. In addition to fighting Imps for money and vengeance, you have your own private mission to hunt down Karla, your former fiance who sided with the Imperials and destroyed your home.

You've arrived in the Federation nation of Albion to help defend it against a possible amphibious attack. However, your boots barely hit the deck before you were assigned a mission to break up a spy ring. However, through a chain of extraordinary events, you not only smashed the spy ring apart, but also managed to capture an Imperial u-boat (mostly) intact, which you repaired and rechristened the Vergeltung.

After rooting out several Imp spy rings and fighting off an Imperial amphibious invasion by defeating their leader, Belkan Knight Sir Fleisher, you've decided that it's now time to move on to greener (or at least more profitable) pastures. You and the Demons left Albion for the besieged nation of Ustio, with new gear and squad members in tow.

Your first mission went well enough, routing a platoon of Imperial soldiers threatening the city of Valais' supply lines. Now it's time to get a better idea of what you're supposed to be doing here.

(cont)
>>
sweet, caught it just at the start. gonna wait for you top finish the thread introduction.

Under different circumstances, you believe Valais would've been a very nice place. The temperature is pretty warm with a clear sunny sky a nice sea breeze. The combination of the coast and the mountains also makes for a breathtaking sight. You're pretty sure that in addition to being an army base, Valais was quite the tourist attraction.

But now it's just a magnet for artillery shells.

Apparently, the Imperials had scheduled bombardments of the city, which happened so regularly that you could set your watch to them. As a result, streets that normally would have been packed with cars and people were eerily empty. Nobody left home unless they absolutely had to, and even then, it was a series of quick dashes from building to building in an effort to not be caught by the artillery.

As a result, the Demons have mostly stayed confined to barracks, and boredom has begun to settle in, which was never good when the people in question had guns and were a tad bit insane.

You yourself have a meeting scheduled with General Freyberg, but that's not for another hour or so.

>Screw it. Let's go early.

You decide to go check in on your squad to see what they're doing to deal with the downtime. You fear that alcohol might be involved, which was a good time waster, but a terrible idea when you're on standby. Fortunately, it seems your fears are unfounded, since you squad seems to have found a way to occupy themselves.

Sam and Elizabeth are organizing the squad's mail, which you find surprising. Considering the histories of most of your squadmates, you weren't expecting to receive piles of letters.

Julia and Headcase seem to be getting into a debate over what to name the Gallian Tank Destroyer, and whether Headcase's planned modifications for it are even legal or feasible at all.

Ramirez, Tarin, Brillant, and Isolde seem to be taking turns sparring. From what you see, things seem to be evenly matched.

Heloise seems to have hit a sugar crash and is taking a nap in the morning sun. Alek seems to be hanging around too, disassembling his rifle and meticulously checking each and every part.

You decide to check in on the quartet of close combat specialists. You think it would be nice to pick up a few pointers rather than flail around wildly like you did against Sir Fleisher earlier.

You hang back at first, observing from a distance. From what you can tell, Brillant seems to be the best at unarmed hand to hand, surprisingly enough. Tarin of course is best with the knife and Isolde is the best fencer, with Ramirez seeming to be the most balanced fighter of the four.

"I see you guys are busy keeping yourselves in shape." You say as you walk up.

"Hey there, boss." Ramirez grins. "Me and Tarin are tied for total wins right now. You wanna try your luck?"

"Isolde, you up for some fencing?" You ask. "It's hard to find a decent opponent these days, and I really want to get back into it."

"Of course, sir." Isolde nods and hands you a fencing blade. You check it and are relieved to see that it's just a harmless practice blade. You don't want to be accidentally scarring somebody for life again.

"Okay, there's one rule and one rule only. Kick your opponent's ass!" Ramirez says, standing between you both. "Fight!"

Ramirez then backs off and joins Tarin and Brillant as they watch in anticipation.

"Point for the Captain." Tarin says.

"She's fascinating, huh? How so?" You ask.

"She is equal parts terrifying and beautiful. One moment she is one of the most enjoyable and charismatic people to be around, like any princess should. The next she can be a ruthlessly efficient warrior, ending any and all threats to her kingdom with a wave of her hand. It's that duality that makes her so formidable."

"But there's something wrong." You continue.

"She has everything a Belkan can ask for. She's in line for the throne, has a knighthood, holds the position of Grand Master, and is loved by her people. Yet... she doesn't seem satisfied. Ever since the First Europan War started, she's been different."

"Three points to the Captain." Tarin announces. "He needs one more point to win."

At least we don't have any insights on the knight we are currently fighting.

"Alright, carry on, then. Don't hurt each other TOO much. We still got Imps to fight." You say.

"Yes, sir!" Everybody says in unison.

You wander away from the sparring quartet and make your way to where Alek and Heloise are lounging. Heloise is curled up like a kitten in the sun, softly snoring. Alek is sitting just across from her, his rifle still in pieces as he inspects each and every one.

"Oh, I didn't see you there, sir!" Alek blinks as he looks up to you. "What can I help you with?"

"It was always something we had to do back home." Alek says. "The cold and snow could really mess up you gun, so it was always important to keep it well maintained. It would really suck if you got ambushed by a bear and your gun jams because you left some moisture in the chamber."

"You have a point." You nod. "I heard you got nicked pretty good when we cleared that hill. You sure it's alright?"

"Yeah, just a scratch." Alek raises his sleeve to show the bandage on his shoulder. "Heloise patched it up pretty quick, so it's no problem."

"You know," You say, looking down at the sleeping Heloise. "Is it just me or does Heloise remind you of a kitten as well?"

"I-I guess." Alek nods.

"Hey. Hey Alek." You give an evil smirk. "Heloise's face. We must doodle on it."

"W-what?!?" Alek pales. "Why would you want to do that?!"

"Sam, Isolde, you're coming with me." You say. Sam was always dependable when it came to meetings, and you wanted to see how Isolde would deal with being in command situations.

"Alright." Sam says a bit reluctantly. She REALLY wanted to sort through that mail, for some reason. "Elizabeth, take care of the rest for me, alright?"

"Sure thing, Sam." Elizabeth smiles and nods.

Isolde politely excuses herself from the impromptu sparring party and joins up with you. You find a jeep waiting for you outside the barracks, which shuttles you to Freyberg's command center. You notice the driver keeps a wary eye for possible artillery strikes and he drives rather quickly.

Once you arrive, you and your escorts are quickly ushered into an underground bunker, where you see General Freyberg and a number of assorted Federation officers huddled around a table.

"Ah! Captain Sturmfuhrer! Right on time!" Freyberg waves you over. "We're just about to begin!"

The strategy meeting seems to be simple enough. Freyberg admits that Ustio currently doesn't have the forces to hold back the Imperials, even with mercenaries bolstering their ranks. However, their current strategy is to try and at least hold off the Imperials until winter, when the snows will block the mountain passes and prevent the Imperials from advancing any farther. Hopefully this delay will buy Ustio enough time to get reinforcements from the Federation. However, in order to pull this off, the Federation would have to launch counterattacks all across the line in an effort to push the Imperials back. Every inch would be critical.

"Captain Sturmfuhrer, it will be up to you to handle Valais front." General Freyberg says. "I'll provide as much support as I can, but my troops simply aren't experienced or trained enough to engage the Imps head on in the mountains."

"I'll do my best, General." You nod.

>>
>>24986150
"Good. Then this meeting is adjourned. All of you are dismissed, except you, Captain. I have a mission for you."

"Finally, something to do!" Sam grins as she finishes up the notes she had been scribbling down. You have a feeling you'll need to consult those again down the line.

"That's what we're here for." You say.

"Good. Good." Freyberg nods. "Do you recall the artillery bombardments? The ones that sound like falling freight trains?"

"Oh yeah, Imperial heavy artillery." Sam shakes her head. "They just love their big guns."

"Gorgon-class superheavy artillery." Isolde recites. "The largest mass production artillery vehicle currently in Imperial service."

"That's... that's right." Freyberg says, caught off guard. "Are you..."

"An ex-Imperial, yes." Isolde nods.

"Well, I'll take your word for it." Freyberg coughs. "We do have some idea where that heavy artillery battery is positioned. If we are to have any chance of pushing out of Valais in force, that battery must be silenced."

"We'll do it." You affirm. "When do you need them down?"

"Our counteroffensive is scheduled to begin in one week. You'll have until then."

"No problem. You can count on the Demons, General."

"I hope so."

---

"Man, they're really not pulling punches down here, are they?" Sam sighs as you exit the briefing room. "Superheavy artillery? You can bet that sort of stuff is going to be well guarded."

"However, the Gorgon classes suffer from a critical flaw in that they are large and difficult to hide." Isolde points out. "And with all their destructive firepower, they are slow to load and fire, and their ammunition is highly volatile."

"You really know your Imperial gear, Isolde." You whistle.

"I used to have one under my command."

"Was it effective?"

"Until the magazine exploded from an accidental misfire."

"Ah..."

And even then, you can't help but notice she still somehow looks cute like that, similar to how Sam always seemed cute when flustered. "Hey, I noticed we had quite a lot of mail, consider most of our squad doesn't have much family and friends to write to. Any idea why?" You ask.

"Well," Elizabeth shrugs, "Part of it is just the backlog catching up to us due to all the traveling. However, most of it is from admirers or people offering us jobs, with the occasional death threat. Really, just the natural result of celebrity."

"I see..." You look down at the letters in your hand. It makes sense that you'd start getting more mail after you gained notoriety.

"If you don't need anything else, I'll be taking my leave, then." Elizabeth says.

>Actually, I need to talk to you about something. [specify]

Most likely she won't know who Matthew is. Best to ask Sam directly.

"Actually Elizabeth if you don't mind could you monitor imperial comms to see where they're stationing their battery when you have the time?"

See if we might get a head start on this mission of ours
>>

"So, did any letters come in for me?" You ask.

"Well, lots, in fact. However, I doubt any of them are from any source you personally know. I wouldn't be able to know unless you authorized me to read them for you."

"That makes sense." You nod. It wasn't uncommon for the local intelligence officer or one unlucky private to be given the job of reading everybody's mail for security reasons.

"Anyways, do you have any idea who this 'Matthew' guy is?" You ask, pointing to one of the letters.

"Just because I'm a spy doesn't make me omniscient." Elizabeth shrugs. However, you get the feeling she's just trying to deflect the issue. "If you really want to know, why don't you just ask Sam yourself?"

"I guess you're right." You sigh.

"Well, I'll see you tomorrow, then." Elizabeth says. "I still need to read through Sam's briefing notes. Gorgons are nasty pieces of machinery, for both their targets and their crews."

Elizabeth then walks past you towards her bunk, leaving you alone in the hall again.

>Deliver the letters to Sam. Ask her about her family and Matthew.
>Nobody's around. Lets peek at the letters first.
>Hold on to the letters and get some sleep. You can always wait till tomorrow.

You decide to go deliver the letters to Sam right away. You manage to find her in the mess hall, apparently having a late dinner as she continues to study her briefing notes.

"Hey, Sam, I got a present for you." You say, ruffling her hair as you sit next to her.

"Sweet! My mail!" Sam's eyes widen and sparkle when she see's the handful of letters addressed to her.

"You know, I never asked before, but you have family?"

"Well, DUH. Everybody has a family." Sam rolls her eyes.

"Well, considering you never really talked about them much, and you seemed so enthusiastic becoming a mercenary, I just sort of assumed..."

"Yeah, I guess that's partly my fault, huh?" Sam nods. "My parents are still alive and kicking in Gallia. Mom's a teacher and Dad's a Colonel in the regulars and fought in both EWs. I have- I mean- had two brothers. The younger one was still around, but the older was killed when the Imps took Ghirlandio."

"I'm sorry to hear that." You say.

"Yeah, well, I already got past that." Sam smiles sadly. "But I still miss him so much. He was a lot like you, actually. Totally fearless and not afraid to jump into the action."

"Sounds like he was a great guy." You nod, and pull out the other letters. "By the way, who's this Matthew guy?"

"Ohmygodheactuallywroteback?!" Sam snatches the letter from your hand with unimaginable speed and has already torn the envelope open before you realized what happened.

"Sam, who is this Matthew?" You ask again, more sternly this time. You're not sure why but your paternal instinct is going into overdrive. "Is he some sort of boyfriend you haven't been telling me about?"

"What? No!" Sam flushes red and shakes her head vigorously. "Matt's my baby brother! If he sent a letter that means..."

Sam's eyes then widen and she clasps her hands over her mouth. You're afraid she got some sort of terrible news or something.

"Sam, if-"

"OH MY GOD HE MADE IT!" Sam locks you in a bear hug. "He made it! He made it! He made it!"

"Made... into... what?" You gasp.

"He got accepted into Lanseal Academy!" Sam absolutely beams. "Not even Dad managed to get there when he was a kid!"

Jaeger has to know what Lanseal Academy is because it's the is the only military academy in Gallia. Whole name is Lanseal Royal Military Academy. Just letting you know what it is by the way so you won't be left out.
>>
>>24988254
>Good for him!

Whilst this the IC reaction, privately I can't help but wonder what kind of competent military academy would let that retard Avan in.
>>
>>24988254
"Good for him!" You say as you hug Sam back. "It's not easy to get into Lanseal. Competition is vicious due to the high demand."

"Hey, weren't you a graduate from Lanseal?" Sam asks.

"To be honest, that whole stage in my life was kinda a blur." You admit. "Nobility is pretty much guaranteed a spot there, but it was the working class guys there that really made the grade."

"Well, it's a big deal for us! Our family has a pretty big military tradition, but Matt's the first Wellings to get into Lanseal!"

>Hey, that's great and all, but isn't Lanseal in the South? Where that whole GRA business is happening?

On one hand telling her now might mess with her. At the same time it doesn't feel something Jagar would just let slide either...

Well. Hope this doesn't backfire in some way later.

Is it really necessary to tell Sam about this? If she did, she'd worry incessantly over it and it might cause her to lapse in battle. Hell, worst case scenario is she'd go to Gallia herself.

Ah, well. We didn't send Elizabeth to scout the artillery. I guess we could send her to get Sam's brother out of the mess.

"Hey, that's great and all, but isn't Lanseal in the South? Where that whole GRA business is happening?" You don't like having to point that out, but it's the elephant in the room you can't ignore.

"Yeah, I realized that too, but, I don't think either side would be crazy enough to toss a bunch of untrained cadets into a civil war, right?"

"Of course not." You try to reassure her. You're pretty sure it wouldn't come to that, but there's a small part of your mind that refuses to be completely convinced. "I mean, come on, he's surrounded by the best and brightest Gallia's got to offer. He'll be fine."

"Yeah, I'm sure he will." Sam nods. "Thanks, Cap."

"So this means you don't have a boyfriend, right? If you do that's something I have to know right away." You deadpan.

"Damnit, Cap." Sam breaks into giggles and punches you in the shoulder. "No promises."

As you return to your bunk, you're suddenly hit with a sinking feeling. Despite pretty much being surrogate siblings for almost a year now, you actually know very little about Sam's personal life. It took some random mail arriving for you to realize that.

Well, at least you learned one thing new about her today. That should count for something.

That night, you dream of Lanseal in flames.

>And that's it for tonight! As I said before, I am going on a trip this weekend so there won't be any new threads this weekend. If I do happen to have time, I'll post a side chapter in the evening. However, the next CONFIRMED thread will be Monday night. Stay tuned!

We should read these. For fun. And then personally write back with some sarcastic or overly-polite response.

That sounds like a good idea. Hope we remember to do that next thread; get a map, Isolde, and Elizabeth, and try to work out where the Imperials would station their artillery... as well as what they'd guard it with.
>>
>>24990224

Another thing we should do that I just thought of: ASK ISOLDE ABOUT ALL THE BELKAN KNIGHTS!

Jaeger probably had some idea of what each of Karla's knights was like, but Isolde would certainly know more.
