Let's come up with some names for fantasy geography.

Decent ones, mind you. Stuff like "Spine of the World" or "Shimmering Sea". Let's not overcook it - no cornball joke names like "Free Palatinate of Dyrwood" or anything like that.

1) The Spice Coast
2) Cape Desolation
3) The Peaks of the Sun
4) Gravedigger's Pass

I recently thought of one called The Shallow Desert.

It would be a giant flat plain of salt water the is mostly only about calf deep, but occasionally sinks all the way to your chest or as shallow as the ankles. There would even be a few oases where the water gives way to enough land to support vegetation that you can live off of and that keeps pure water somehow. I was also thinking of having small seaweed and fish populations, they just dont make for easy survival and its really hard to actually cook any food when there is literally no land in sight. I don't know how well it would work, but it seemed like a neat idea.

I have one range that's just called "The Shields" but it sounds kinda lame.
Especially because there is a small forest at the base called the Shieldwood.
And I really don't want to call the guardtower Shieldwood Point or Shieldwatch or whatever.

A trick is to think of local places and use the etymology, or translate them more or less creatively in other languages (this one works better for non-english speaking groups, 'cause dnd-like fantasy always usese english geographical names because... because yes).
>>
>>24972855

Stink onions/Chicago is on a whole new level of awesome.
>>
>>24973010
Ohh kay, I think I understand. So say if I wanted to have a fantasy version of a place like Beijing, what you're suggesting would be to trace the etymology and translate it into a language that ISN'T Chinese. Right?
>>
>>24972933
Seems to be the case.

Wikipedia translates it as "wild onion", though.

Although these onions are apparently a kind of garlic, so stink onion seems likely too.

It's true. I grew up in and around "Blue Earth" on that map; i.e. Mankato, MN. Funny enough, there is a Blue Earth, MN a bit to the south of the town...

Also, we lovely European-descended people took the name from the Native folks in the area, but we pronounce it wrong... mon-KAH-toe is how it should be said to mean "blue earth." Its most commonly pronounced MAN-kay-toe; which is most closely translated to "blue skunk"

Don't forget that deserts are REALLY hot during the day and REALLY cold during the day due to little to no clouds or bodies of water that could isolate/store heat.

So you'd get a reflective as fuck glass landscape in the morning, lava 'round noon, red reflective landscape in the evening and lots of brittle see-through glass in the night. Y'know, where it's already difficult to see stuff.
>>
>>24975837
Pretty sure that the constant and radical changes in temperature will have just broken most of the glasses by now, resulting in a non ending storms of death as wind blows over the Glass Desert and whips up the glass shards.
>>
>>24976658
Depends on how thick the glass is and how recently the glass was created. A mid-point where nothing can grow and glass storms fly across the land is probably best.

I came up with several hundred of these when I was creating my world. A lot of them are [name]'s X, where X is a geographical point of interest and the name is a semi-popular fictional character's name with a few letters switched out.

Not all of them, though. Let me list a bunch of the others while I have the map open:
Mortwhip Barrow
Cloudrise Tor
Axetail Peninsula
Turnback Point
Fool's Landing
Sandseeker Respite
Srathi Sandsea
Hoarfrost Fields
Shivering Ridge
Goretusk Mountain
Whisperwind Tangle
Forgemaster's Crux
Overwatch Peninsula
Darkmere Valley

Azure Cradle
Illwind Reach
The Pyrewood
Architect's Rest
Scaldwater Plateau
Blackscale Peak
Incendia Traverse
Vizier's Lookout
Tempest Fields

Lunos Tor
Resolute Straits
Newhearth Brightwood
Tristmoor
The Razorwood
Raincage Fields
Titan's Rest
Highborn Thicket
Tainim Hollow
Shiversting Point
Talobi Steppe

Any names bearing resemblence to existing fictional or nonfictional places are probably like that on purpose, but I don't remember the exact inspiration from each name.

The Anvil - massive plateau revered as holy by the dwarves.

The Witchwoods - haunted woods where the dead are said to rise from the grave.

From Wikipedia
>The word Arctic comes from the Greek ἀρκτικός (arktikos), "near the Bear, northern"[6] and that from the word ἄρκτος (arktos), meaning bear.[7] The name refers either to the constellation Ursa Major, the "Great Bear", which is prominent in the northern portion of the celestial sphere, or to the constellation Ursa Minor, the "Little Bear", which contains Polaris, the Pole Star, also known as the North Star.[8]

>>
>>24983717
So during the Vietnam War, we had Even Further South versus Less Further South?
>>
>>24983717
Sort of. It's actually "South of Yue." It's written in the Imperial records that the emperor at the time didn't like the proposed name because it implied that Yue was theirs, but he also wanted them around as a tributary state, so he reversed the characters. Thus, Nan Yue (South Yue) became Yue Nan (South of Yue), or Vietnam.
