"Just..." You say. "The British are coming!" You say, figuring that it's best to just change the subject and hope he forgets about the idea.

"What?" He asks quizzically.

"...What do you know about British tanks? Because we're gonna have to fight through about five of them tomorrow." You finally say, hopefully explaining the situation.

"Oh. Was about to yell you we're on the wrong set of islands for that." He laughs. "Well, bring your girlfriend over." Goddammit. That's actually the last thing you need him thinking at this point. "I'll see what I can do to help you kids out."

An hour later, you make it a point to be the first to the door when the doorbell rings. Grandpa could be an acquired taste and you needed to make sure the girls were eased into his presense gently. You swing open the door- Both have their arms full of books, and papers.

"Thank you!" Miho says. "I'm sorry we're late." She says with a small bow.

"We stopped by my house- I've got a few books on British tanks and I figured they might be helpful." Yukari says with a big grin. "This is so exciting! Our first real battle!"

"Yeah... I just wish it wasn't on such short notice." You say, leading them into the living room. "You can leave the books on the table there- We haven't unpacked all our stuff yet, so it's still a bit of a mess."

"So your grandpa was a tanker?" Yukari asks enthusiastically. "Was he in Europe? Africa?"

"Korea." Your grandfather says, pants on and with a cooking apron over his front. He looks at you and smiles, before switching to English. "Two? I knew you'd grow into my genes eventually!" He says with a grin.

Grandpa Russell almost looked like he was being pushed backwards by the force and aggression of her excitement.

You look over at Miho. You'd expected something, this wasn't it. Grandpa does his best to answer. "I sure was- A real tanke- I was the loa-" Each of his answers was cut short as Yukari excitedly drilled him for information.

Does the loader do anything other than put a round into the cannon? It seems like a job that would be easily automated to me.

Many tanks have tried autoloaders. Numerous Russian tanks, the French, and a few American tanks.

On the Whole, only the Russians got it to work right, and even then it had some significant flaws. The Yank and French ones were utter shit.

It's a good idea in theory, but it's fucking tricky in practice.

Wikipedia says that only Ukraine uses T-64s in any sort of number. And those are being upgraded to the BV variant.
>>
>>24952161

Considering the problems they had to make said systems work, they preffered a good ole loader rather than a jam-prone mechanism who would put the tank out of the fight for minutes. Only on an airplane where it was really, really, really impossible to have a loader were they forced to install an automatic loading system.

3 years later, it still didn't work very well, judging from the poor results the Messerschmitt variant with the 75 mm cannon (that was supposed to "one shot" B-17's) encountered. Jams, jams, jams and more jams, out of a payload of 12 shots, the pilot was 'happy' if he managed to get 3 off.
>>
"So, did you get the maps and everything?" You ask Miho as you take a seat at the table. Yukari has followed your grandfather back into the kitchen, asking him every question could, from the tanks he'd driven to the tanks he'd killed and how long he had fought in a tank...

"Yes. It's going to be held surrounding Oorai." She says, unfolding the map on the table in front of you. "Starting point for our team is here." She says pointing at the map.

You're still staring at her when she looks back up at you. "Wait... I thought Oorai was on our ship."

She laughs. "Our ship is named after the City of Oorai."

You nod sagely. "I see. Go on." She points to a place on the map- a short, hilly pass. "I was thinking we set up an ambush point here. I looked at satellite photos and it's just barely wide enough for a couple of tanks to move up abreast- and it's an uphill climb, so their Matildas and Churchills will have a lot of trouble with it." The two support tanks were slow enough on even ground- but put them on even a slight grade and they'd slow down to a crawl.

The German Bordkanonen Jammed. A *lot*.

The Russians, and the Japanese use Autoloaders, mostly in an effort to keep tank weight down by eliminating the loader. If the Autoloader fails, manually loading is fucking horrendous, especially without a dedicated loader.

Most western tanks, which tend towards being heavier (Abrams, Leaopard 2, Challenger 2) don't need to give so much of a fuck about weight, and so a loader is easier and more reliable.

>>24952215
He said T-62. The T-64 used an Autoloader. And for the Record, Russia still does have a couple thousand T-62s in storage, but plans to scrap them this year.

>"That's a lot of depression- are you sure our tanks will be able to fire on them without exposing themselves?"

Doesn't matter if the expect an ambush if they walk into it anyway, but this shit will sting.
>>
The problem with autoloaders is largely twofold: Capacity and Reliability.

Most autoloaders can only relatively few shots, and replenishing those shots is often a difficult process which requires the tank to be taken out of combat.

The other problem is one of reliablity. A trained loader will get the shell loaded on-time every time. (Unless he's hurt/killed, but even that would knock out the autoloader in the same case. Even then, another crew member can usually take over his position.) Even a reliable autoloader is going to have a much larger frequency of error, and being that it's often a large, complicated bit of machinery, it generally means that the tank is mission-dead until it gets pulled back to a workshop to have it fixed.

For an ambush you only need to hit then run. But you can't ambush if you can't hit them at all.
>>

>>"It it goes south, how easily can we pull back?"

"How about a leapfrogging ambush? The tanks with heavy guns - The Stug, Black Jacka nd the Lee - draw tehm into the ambush alley, where the tanks with shorter-ranged guns engage at close range. Then they pull back under covering fire from the longer ranged tanks, at which point we draw them out into another set of favourable terrain."

I don't think that will work. It looks great on paper but it requires a lot of teamwork, constant and clear communication, and nobody save Miho has any experience in that field.

>>
>>24952427
Well it's either that or draw them into a cityfight from the start.
>>
>>24952442
I think the ambush plan will work, we just need a strong crossfire. Instead of putting all our tanks on highground we should make some of the ones with weaker guns lay in wait on the flanks, with the highground tanks as bait.

>>24952462

>>
>>24952545

"How easily can we draw back when it starts going badly?" You say, looking at the map. Matildas were slow and had relatively weak 2pdr guns, but the 38(t) and I-Go, as well as the M3's 37mm turret, wouldn't be able to penetrate their armor unless they got lucky- that left the StuG, Panzer IV and Black Jack doing the heavy lifting.

"Slight grade- we're near the top of the hill too so we'd have cover from them as soon as we pulled back." She says drawing her finger along the path.

"So, assuming we won't knock them all out at once, what do we do then?" You look at the map, after a short drop, the path back onto a road that lead down the valley into Oorai.

Miho smiles viciously. "We draw them back into Oorai and engage them in urban fighting- it'll be a lot easier to get around to their side and rear armor there." She looks up at you. "In that kind of situation, Black Jack becomes a terror weapon- they won't know where you are, exactly, so they won't be able to move as aggressively because you can easily knock out any of their tanks and then disappear again."

>"Wait, isn't Oorai a city? With people?"
>"Do we know what tanks they'll be using?"
>"What about the rest of our tanks? I don't think Black Jack can carry this entire battle."
>>
>>24952545
Or have the 38t and I-Go track them, split them up, and we can pick them off.

If they stay together to repair, we can bombard them at long range with the 90mm and StuG.

"So wait... We're allowed to fight in the city?" You say, looking at the map. "Aren't there people there? And property?" You're actually a bit worried about this particular point.

Miho shakes her head. "Don't worry- they evacuate everyone to a safe distance before hand. And the government insures them for property damage caused by Senshado." That's got to be pretty expensive, considering some of the firepower being thrown around.

You get up. "I'm gonna get a drink, you want a coke or something?" You say, heading for the kitchen.

She smiles. "Yes, thank you!"

As you enter the kitchen Yukari has taken a post by the sink while grandfather regales her with his old story about how his squad had held of over thirty Chinese T-34s in one night. "I swear, it went right through and blew the turret off the tank behind it." You say in unision with him as you open the fridge and get out a few cans of coke. You throw one to Yukari, sure that a bit of caffiene and sugar would calm her right down.

>"I've heard this one a hundred times."
>"I see Grandpa's giving you all his old Black Jack stories."

and nowadays they are a standard feature if you're not running a chally, a leo 2 of MUH ABRAMS
>>

Shoving one or more of them off a ledge into water with an M-6 Heavy is always hilarious.
>>

>>
>>24952314
if you're talking about tanks pre 1970, you're spot on, after 1975~80 they have been running successfully with no problems, its just that most armies had spent to much on their training and armaments to warrant a change, now that everything is obsolete autoloaders are being put on any newly developed MBT
>>
>>24952855
not really, the terrible ones were all phased out/replaced in the early T72's, only the terrible export models still have them, everything and everyone else who cant afford the big 3 (m1, chally 2 & leo 2) runs them fine.

Not to mention the only NATO tank that can fire on the move at top speed, the Leclerc, has an autoclapper.
>>
"Did he tell you his story about the IS-2?" you say, looking over to your grandfather with a wry smile. He sighs dramatically as Yukari looks at him expectantly.

"Alright, alright." He finally says. "So, we were about a hundred miles North of the 38th- we'd been pushing the DPRK forces back for two weeks," He says pounding his fist into his palm to illustrate the point. "It was the first time we had seen Chinese tanks in the war- and theere they were, coming right up the valley following the river."

He stops for a second to stir the chili. "So, they don't see us yet, 'cause we're up just below the top of a ridge on a little service road, so they're just filing past us on their way to Seoul, I guess. Anyway, Hitchens he wants to open up on them right there, but our Commander has the entire group- Four of us Pershings and another dozen Easy-8s- hold fire until their entire line was in front of us."

Yukari is absolutely mesmerized by the story already, nodding like a kid getting advice from Santa Clause on being a good kid.

It's not a long story- none of them are- so you opt to stick around and hear it again.

"So we're holding our fire, waiting for the Commander to have us open up and then when the last tank enters the valley- that's when we opened up. BOOMBAMBAMBAMBLAM!" He shouts. "We knocked out the last tanks in the line first, so they couldn't just back out, but we're looking at that IS-2 at the front. And he swivels his turret up to look at us." He motions with his hand to illustrate the action.

"We're looking straight down that barrel when Hitchens opens up and nails the poor bastard right on the tip of the cannon as the goo-I mean the IS-2 fires and we must've set it off in the tube because the cannon just explodes outward like an Elmer Fudd cartoon." He laughs. "Saw the entire thing through my loader's periscope. So the crew of IS-2, they know they've got nothing so the lucky sons of bitches bail out, all four of them run for the river. We spent a good ten minutes just sitting there firing- was a turkey shoot."

He laughs a bit. "Most of the poor bastards just abandoned their tanks at the start- the Brits we were overwatching must've captured near-a-hundred Chinese tankers and- this is the best part. There were two IS-2s in the formation- We destroyed the gun on the one we shot, but the other had it's hull gutted by a fire."

Yukari's eyes light up. "You were part of the group that captured #768?!"

Grandpa's eyes light up. "Well, most of it- the gun came from the other IS."

You have a laugh as Yukari almost falls to her knees. She has trouble speaking. "This is... It's just so cool..."

Okay, so, Yukari is bro-ing thing sup with Gramps, and we actually get some solid planning with Miho done. Good.

Anzu begin annoyed strikes me as her being pissed we've gone of to plan this without keeping her in the loop. Because I can't figure out what else we've done so far that'd do it. Though Politicians shouldn't be doing the military planning anyway.

If Anus's pissed at us, this is the retort we should use. The dumb decisions of repainting the tank was pretty much politically motivated, to get public support for her war, as was the press-ganging and extortion of Miho into participating.

She started this war, and now she should button up and leave the planning and war-making to the ones trained for this sort of thing - Us and Miho.

American crews manually reload faster than Russian autoloaders, and don't jam. The expense of an autoloader really isn't justified if a soldier can do the job faster and better.
>>
>>24953595
>American crews manually reload faster than Russian autoloaders
this is the problem everyone forgets, the russian arnt the only ones with autoloaders, and the russian ones are now vastly improved

everyone who is developing new tanks, or using license built tanks that are not the big 3 use autoloaders to the same effectiveness as a traditional 4-5 man crew for less cost and upkeep

autoloaders are the way of the future
>>
>>24953595

Only barely, and the latest arguably match manual loading times under combat conditions. Not that you ever need to fire that fast in a modern engagement anyway. Reliability has improved such that jams are very infrequent, and the Autoloader sustains a better RoF on the move.

Autoloaders just get bad press in Yankeestan because of the shitty, pre-'75 autoloader design used on the monkeymodel T-72 exports. The ones that jack-in-the-box'd the turrets off. Those were shit. All modern Autoloading tanks use far safer and more sensible storage paradigms.

The argument that if the loader is incapacitated, other crewmembers can take over his job is somewhat specious - if the loader is sufficiently injured to be put completely out of action, it's highly probably that other crew members have been too.

Another point to rememember is that the provision of the autolaoder on modern Russian tanks aids in achieving the reduction in weight of over 20t compared to non-autoloading western tanks, while retaining comparable protection and superior armament. This on top of the reduced crew vastly reduces the logistical trail and greatly contributes to improved cross-country mobility thanks to the far greater power-to-weight ratio. Deriding autoloaders in a pure vacuum of "loaders load faster and don't jam" is blatantly fallacious in addition to being factually questionable.
>>
>>24953720
Doubtful. Autoloaders still have massive flaws, where the ammo is stored being the biggest one. Manually loaded tanks store their rounds behind a blast door that channels the explosion out the top of the tank. Not sure if the Ruskies ever fixed that issue on their tanks, but damn if there aren't some nasty ammo cook-offs from even the T-80's.
>>
>>24953921

Good point, but any shot penetrating hard enough to set off the ammo would already seriously harm the crew.
>>
>>24953921
>Manually loaded tanks store their rounds behind a blast door that channels the explosion out the top of the tank

So do modern Autoloaders.

>Not sure if the Ruskies ever fixed that issue on their tanks
They did. They have for decades.

> but damn if there aren't some nasty ammo cook-offs from even the T-80's.
That's less a problem of the autoloader and ammo storage as it was idiotic use of unescorted MBTs being used to storm a city, and crewed by questionably-trained, inexperienced crews.

There were a whole lot of problems with that damned Chechen war, but the Design of the T-80 was not one of them.
>>
>>24953921
>Autoloaders still have massive flaws, where the ammo is stored being the biggest one.
the vast majority of western designed autoloaders store them in exactly the same place as their non autoloaded compatriots, in the rear of the turret

its why so many modern MBT's have massively elongated turrets that cover their rear deck

please, stop sucking the cock of the propaganda that you've been fed

the tech suck, so we improved it, and now the tech does not suck
