Sorry about the lateness, but it's not like you've got anything better to do on a Saturday night, right? Let get some VALKYRIAN MERCS QUEST!

Hey look! It's VALKYRIAN MERCS QUEST!

Archive: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Valkyrian%20Mercs%20Quest
Pastebin: http://pastebin.com/0r7Wr6Xv

Don't know what Valkyria Chronicles is? Check it out here! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valkyria_Chronicles

You are JAGER STURMFUHRER, leader of the fledgling mercenary company DEMONS OF RANDGRIZ. In addition to fighting Imps for money and vengeance, you have your own private mission to hunt down Karla, your former fiance who sided with the Imperials and destroyed your home.

You've arrived in the Federation nation of Albion to help defend it against a possible amphibious attack. However, your boots barely hit the deck before you were assigned a mission to break up a spy ring. However, through a chain of extraordinary events, you not only smashed the spy ring apart, but also managed to capture an Imperial u-boat (mostly) intact, which you repaired and rechristened the Vergeltung.

After rooting out several Imp spy rings and fighting off an Imperial amphibious invasion by defeating their leader, Belkan Knight Sir Fleisher, you've decided that it's now time to move on to greener (or at least more profitable) pastures. You and the Demons are already packed and prepared to leave Albion for the besieged nation of Ustio, with new gear and squad members in tow.

You're currently enjoying a very nice cruise on the Vergeltung as it steams down the western coast of Europa into the Mediterranean. The u-boat is currently running on the surface since it could faster, and it could vent the dangerous ragnite fumes that slowly built up as it ran. Captain Davos assured you that it would be safe, since the back of the Imperial Navy had been broken at Albion, and their u-boats never dared venture too close to the coast where they would be easier to spot.

Of course, there was also the problem of getting shot at by friendly forces. Fortunately, Davos had thought of that possibility and had a massive Albion flag raised over the command tower. More than a few Federation patrol ships and a few fishing boats would pull up absolutely bewildered. You'd give them a casual wave while Elizabeth presumably explained the situation to them over the radio.

It had been several days since you left Albion, and you would be entering the Mediterranean soon. You realize that you don't actually know all that much about Ustio.

You decide to go pester Sam about it. Reading her reports and notes about missions just wasn't the same.

You stalk through the narrow passages and chambers searching for her, giving a polite nod the occasional crewman and Demon you pass by. You find Sam inside the mess hall, busily scribbling away at a piece of paper as she continues to draft your strongly worded reply to the GRA.

"Sam. Hey Sam." You take a seat beside her and start poking her should. "I just realized I need info on Ustio."

"You know, why do I even write down those detailed notes and reports when you don't even bother reading them?" Sam sighs, setting down her pen.

"Benefits of command, Sam. I get to order you to do the reading for me." You bob your head jokingly.

"Fiiiiiine." Sam pouts before pulling out another folder from her bag. "Ustio's this large peninsula you see here. It's one of the Federation's easternmost territories. Pretty unique in that it's not actually connected to the Federation by any land route, due to the Empire controlling all of them."

"Then how did they manage to remain independent from the Empire?" You ask.

"Because Northern Ustio is pretty much one big mountain range. The Imperials can't use their favorite tactic of 'roll it over with waves of tank', so they have get through the range the hard way, mountain by mountain. It's why Ustio is managing to hold them off, even with an army a fraction of the size of the Empire's. However, the attrition is starting to catch up to them, and if nothing's done, current estimate is that the Imps break through the mountains within the month, and Ustio is done for."

"Anything I should know about the Ustians themselves?"

"Very stubborn and individualistic. They actually resemble Gallia in a lot of ways, though without the universal conscription since they're just a tad more pacifistic than us.

"Major strengths?"

"Well I guess that's good for us."

"Unfortunately that also means their army is very well equipped, but small and inexperienced. No SOE or super navy to help us out here."

"Expected." You shrug. "Not like we haven't picked up some extra firepower on the way."

"It's gonna be tough. Northern Ustio is nothing like Gallia. Tight valleys and mountain passes, and treacherous mountain paths. It's going to be a nightmare for an army to get through."

"What about a small band of elite mercenaries?"

"You got a point there, Cap."

Satisfied, you decide to leave Sam to her work.

You decide to track down your mad genius inventor Qyburn. Apparently being confined to the tight spaces of the u-boat has magnified his creative instinct, and he had locked himself away in one of the aft bays ever since you left port. From the sounds emanating within, nobody has found the courage to try and investigate what he was up to.

Well, you guess it was time to change that.

Walking up to Qyburn's temporary lab, you can hear the whine and clanking of machinery on the other end of the bulkhead. You knock on the door just to be polite.

"Oh! Please, come on in, whoever you are!" Qyburn's voice squeaks from inside. "It's quite safe in here... for the moment!"

Grimacing at the last part, you carefully open the door and peek inside. It looks as if Qyburn had taken some of his older inventions and tore them apart to cobble something entirely new and terrible.

"Ah! Captain Sturmfuhrer! A pleasure to see you again!" Qyburn says happily, taking off his heavy welding mask. "What brings you in today?"

"Yeah, well, I told them I wouldn't take up their offer... politely of course."

"Archduchess Cordelia isn't the type of person to lie about something like that. But It's something that happened way back in the past. We have bigger things to worry about for now." You say.

"Well said, well said. I suppose I sound like a senile old fool doddering about things like that, eh?" Qyburn grins. "But it's always important to know where you you came from, especially for Darcsens, who have no place to call home. However, I find it funny..."

"What's funny?" You ask, perplexed.

"Everybody is so caught up with who caused the Calamity, or who won that terrible war it ended, that they start wars of their own to settle things. Tell me, Captain. Have you ever seen a Valkrur? A real one, in person?"

"No, I can't say I have." You shake her head. You heard of a couple showing up during the invasion, one on each side, but the Imperial one died in battle and the Gallian one straight up disappeared.

"And how many Darcsens have you seen?"

"Lots. In fact, there's you, Tarin, and Heloise on this ship right now."

"Exactly! People keep saying the Darcsens lost the war, yet here we still are, clinging to life despite the world's best efforts to stop us. Rather ironic, isn't it? The Valkrur are all but extinct yet we Darcsens still remain to suffer for their sins..."

"Qyburn, are you drunk?" You ask. You can swear you can sniff some alcohol under all of the machine oils and cleaning fluid in the workshop.

"Just a bit." Qyburn shrugs. "It helps jump start my inventor's instinct sometimes. Nothing that would impair my normal functions."

"Does it have to do with something like that?" You point to a large tube-shaped contraption nestled at the back of the chamber.

"Oh, just my latest project. Nowhere near done, but I think I've worked out all the kinks for it."

"Mind giving me some details on it?" You ask.

"Oh no, I'm sorry, but it's a policy of mine not to give any details on unfinished works." Qyburn shakes his head. "I don't want to get expectations up, you see? But I can guarantee you that if it works, it would help you greatly in Ustio's mountain ranges!"

Well, that didn't really tell you a lot, but you suppose you'd have to go with it.

The rest of the journey is rather uneventful, passing by the occasional Federation naval patrol. However, as you near Ustio's western shore, you notice a heavier and heavier naval presence. In fact, as your destination comes within sight, you can see Ustian and Osean battleships bombarding the mountains farther north.

"Well, that's encouraging." Sam muses.

The u-boat pulls into Valais, Ustio's northernmost major port and frontline base. From the looks of it, the "frontline" part has become rather literal. You can see much of the city has been damaged from heavy artillery bombardment, with the barrels of countless Ustian artillery pieces pointing up in the sky in defiance.

"Charming place." You say.

"Definitely not like Albion, that's for sure." Sam agrees.

The moment the gangplank drops and you step foot on the dock, you're already accosted by Ustian civilians trying to do god knows what. It takes an entire platoon of Ustian troops to push them back.

"I'm sorry about that." An Ustian officer steps forward to greet you. "Ever since the Imperials surrounded us, the only way out of Valais is by sea. And with all the ship being commandeered by the Federation, you can understand the residents here being a bit... antsy."

"Okay, let's get this over with." You sigh. "Just point the way and we'll be there."

"It's nothing much." Freyberg says. "You missed the action yesterday. The Imperials cut the southern road just last night, cutting off our only land route with the rest of Ustio. They haven't consolidated their position yet, so they're vulnerable to counterattack. My men are tied up just holding the northern passes, so I'll need you and your men to clear the south."

"Alright, we'll head down the moment we get all our gear unloaded." You say. "Enemy strengths? Troop composition?"

"Nothing concrete, but it was fast. From what reports we got from our scouts, it's mostly light infantry, but very well equipped."

"Okay, DEMONS WE ARE MOVING OUT! Vehicles and combat gear are a priority for unload! Everything else can wait!"

"You realize, we're going to charge extra for a rush job like this." Sam points out to Freyberg.

"I'm willing to pay the price." Freyberg says. "Just get those damn Imps off my road!"

Looking at the map, you see there are two possible defensive positions the Imps could be holed up in. Each has a good line of sight on the road. There's a hill that provides high ground vision over the road, and a forest next to the road that provides cover for ambushes.

Sure why not

Dmitri Petrovich
Mortar Crew Leader
Prideful - has had a very long service record as an artilleryman, has worked with the smallest knee mortar through to the largest howitzers employed by Imperials. Became a mercenary after the rout of Maximillian's army, his crew were all under Radi Jaeger's command during the invasion. Likes joining in with Ivan in singing when the oppurtunity arises.

Ivan Volkhov
Mortar Crew member
Cheerful - Served alongside Dmitri for the course of his military career, typically whistles old tunes whilst operating the mortar, in fact generally sings old marching songs or tuns at any turn. Rumoured to be a raging alcoholic, but given his peasant origins that sort of is a given, Dmitri is often heard screaming at Ivan for being drunk on duty. Attempts to remain sobre during fire missions. Has once tried dropping a bottle of vodka down the tube.

Alexei Miroslav
Mortar Crew member
Oppurtunistic - Worked as a supply officer before his company was thrust into battle, joined Dmitri's mortar crew reluctantly, but has found himself quite at home amongst the two men he's come to consider his brothers. Thanks to his experience supplying units on the front he's great at mooching munitions from anybody he can, more than once he's handed Dmitri a mortar round with hostile markings.

2004, at Al Amara.

Fuckin' psycho Brits, man.
>>
>>24932930
To be fair, most bayonet charges in recent times are mostly as desperation moves. As the war in the Pacific proved, bayonet charges are woefully ineffective against properly trained and disciplined soldiers.

>>24932669
"Everybody hold fire!" You order.

One cue, your squad holds its fire. Confused, the Imps also hold their fire as well.

"ATTENTION IMPERIAL SOLDIERS! THIS IS JAGER STURMFUHRER OF THE DEMONS OF RANDGRIZ." You yell loud enough to make sure they can hear you. "YOU ARE OUTNUMBERED AND OUTGUNNED AND HAVE NO HOPE OF WINNING. SURRENDER NOW AND YOU WILL NOT BE HURT."

>WWII
Battle of Danny Boy and Al Amara were both MUCH more recent than that. And were successful.
>>24932975
The Japs charged positions that could actually stop them. Six riflemen can't stop a bayonet charge, not if you do it right. If we had smoke grenades it'd be easy. Pop smoke in the open, wait for it to get nice and thick, then charge.
>>
>>24932975
Who said anything about bayonets. I meant shotgun to the face style charge tactics, we are a shock trooper after all.

Lets be clear here. The reasons bayonet charges failed in any theatres of war was the presence of well prepared defensive lines and defensive weapons such as automatic weapon and mines
None of which the six poor sods in front of us possess, I already acquiesed, but I'll not be told that a bayonet charge isn't effective especially in our particular situation.

I havn't the foggiest clue, although in VC2 there were classes that fought with friggin' great swords and hammers sooo...

I can't remember right... but did Merc switch the whole ones overrule all to ones cancel out the highest roll. Maybe crazy but I don't remember.

iirc it was ones cancel out the highest roll, leaves us with a 3, so not really helpful.

Yeah, he did. We get not one, but a whopping 3.

>>
>>24933240
Most of the return fire is rather inaccurate, but a lance shot bounces off the Fenrir's front armor while a bullet grazes Alek's shoulder.

"Son of a bitch!" He curses.

"You alright, Alek?" You ask.

"Yeah, yeah, just a scratch."

"Well, I guess that's their answer." Sam frowns. "Idiots."

"Captain, mortars loaded and ready to fire on your command." You mortar team announces.

>Fuck it. Unload EVERYTHING on these bastards.
>Lets just methodically push these guys out. No sense risking our lives unnecessarily.

Lets just overwhelm them. Given the number of foes it might be best to just get our lancers to fire 2 frags and sit back and bomb the place to ruins.
>>
>>24933276
Are we coordinated enough to do a creeping barrage? Shell them ahead of our advance enough thet they're panicked and demoralized, then finish them off with a push.

Some of them might have a change of heart and surrender, but if they don't, whatever

Clear them out methodically, frags in first, advance under machine gun cover from the tanks
>>
Hey Merc, just caught up with this quest last night, really like it so far. Based /tg/ dice made it even better. That said. Mortar them and make our employers for the ammo.
>>
>>24933276
"Well obviously these guys are in no mood to listen." You scowl. "Mortars, soften up the enemy positions. Demons, once the mortars are done shelling, Julia and Headcase will advance. We follow them in and mop up what's left. Got it?"

The mortars rain down, bracketing the the Imp positions with high explosive destruction.

And it seems like the Imps had finally had enough. Once the mortar shelling is over, you see three pairs of hands raised up out of the ground.

"We surrender!" One of the soldiers shouts. "Just... just stop shooting!"

>Accept their surrender.

"Okay, come out with your hands up, and no funny business!" You yell back.

Out of a platoon of about thirty men, you've taken nine of them prisoner, most having been wounded. A quick search of the forest reveals that there was never any Imps there. While you're sad that you wasted a bunch of mortar shells on what was essentially nothing, the bright side was that there weren't any Imps in there waiting to ambush you.

It takes a couple more hours before General Freyberg arrives with reinforcements in the form of several platoons of Ustian troops to relieve you.

"Thank god you arrived when you did." Freyberg smiles. "I managed to scrounge up some men to keep an eye on things here. However, it is troubling. If the Imps could sneak infantry this far south, god knows how far into the mountains they've pushed."

"Well, more work for us, I guess."

"That's the spirit!" Freyberg laughs. "These trucks will take you back to Valais for some R&R. You definitely deserve it."

The ride back is rather uneventful until you get into Valais proper. The city gets shelled by Imp artillery, and the Ustian artillery responds in kind.

Yeah, this definitely wasn't going to be like Albion.

>And that's it for today! Next thread will be on Wednesday 6-7pm PST. Unfortunately, I'm going on a trip for Memorial Day weekend, so unfortunately, no VMQ next weekend.
>>
>>24933909

Accept the surrender, but don't be nice about it. They did throw your initial offer back in your face, after all.
>>
