And we're back for VALKYRIAN MERCS QUEST!

Archive: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Valkyrian%20Mercs%20Quest
Pastebin: http://pastebin.com/P3xYeHhn

Don't know what Valkyria Chronicles is? Check it out here! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valkyria_Chronicles

You are JAGER STURMFUHRER, leader of the fledgling mercenary company DEMONS OF RANDGRIZ. In addition to fighting Imps for money and vengeance, you have your own private mission to hunt down Karla, your former fiance who sided with the Imperials and destroyed your home.

You've recently arrived in the Federation nation of Albion to help defend it against a possible amphibious attack. However, your boots barely hit the deck before you were assigned a mission to break up a spy ring. However, through a chain of extraordinary events, you not only smashed the spy ring apart, but also managed to capture an Imperial u-boat (mostly) intact. After a massive victory party that left you with a headsplitting wakeup call, you met with the mysterious and totally trustworthy Colonel Lynch of the Albion Intelligence service.

After rooting out more Imperial spies, you were sent out with the Vergeltung to investigate a possible staging point for Imperial infiltrators, only to find that it was a staging point for the entire Imperial invasion fleet. Thinking quickly, you came up with a daring (and crazy) plan to sink the Imperial flagship, the Lion of the Empire, which you somehow managed to pull off.

However, despite their loss, the Imperials have pressed ahead with the invasion anyways. While defending the beaches, you've inflicted massive losses on the attacking Imps. You then drew the attention of their Commander, Sir Fleisher the Red Swallow. Playing to his pride and honor, you convinced him engage in a duel, which you managed to barely win. Defeated, Sir Fleisher agreed to pull back his forces, essentially ending the Empire's plans to invade Albion.

You're now participating in the second Albion victory party, taking advantage of the momentary peace before you inevitably wander off to another battlefield that is in need of your skills.

"Hey, Captain! How's it going?" Ramirez waves you over. Apparently he and Brillant have started an impromptu arm wrestling contest, and Ramirez is smoking the competition. "Hey man, you wanna give it a try?"

You consider Ramirez's challenge for a moment. You've still not quite recovered from that fistfight with Sir Fleisher, but you eventually give in the peer pressure.

"Alright, you're on." You say, taking a seat opposite Ramirez. A large crowd gathers around to watch. "You sure you want to try this against a guy who just punched out a knight?"

"It's not fun if I don't challenge the best." Ramirez grins.

"W-wha?" Brillant stammers. "But I don't remember reading that-"

"I'm just fucking with you, Brillant." You laugh. Ramirez joins in too. "So how's the training with Tarin been going?"

"Uuuuhhhh, well...." Brillant takes a pull from the nearest bottle he can find. "It's less training and more like Hell. Her idea of training is to drop me in the middle of the forest and I have to find my way out on my own. She makes it fair by giving me a twelve hour headstart."

"Okay..." You grimace. "You're at least improving, right?"

"I've picked up a healthy fear of trees, if that's what you mean."

"Yeah, good luck with that." You say before turning to Ramirez.

"You almost had me there, Ramirez. But you asked for my best and I gave it to you, if I didn't I'd have lost. "

"Wouldn't have had it any other way, boss." Ramirez responds.

"So what brought you to the Demons?"

"I guess because I was bored." Ramirez shrugs. "I'm from Sapin, so I started out as a merc fighting in the civil wars there."

You frown. From what you've heard, Sapin was a highly politically unstable country, with dozens of factions vying for control. The running joke was that somewhere at sometime, there was some kind of civil war going on in Sapin.

"Anyways, when EWII broke out, Sapin finally got its shit together and focused on the war effort. No more civil wars." Ramirez shrugs. "Got boring fast, so I decided to do some traveling."

"And how do you feel about the Demons, then?"

"Think I made the right choice." Ramirez grins and raises his glass to toast you. "We're going to have hell of at time."

"Hey, but if-I mean- when EWII ends, what'll you do?" Brillant asks.

You wander off back into the crowd, and you see Heloise again at the bar. She's making more of those sickeningly sweet cocktails. Opposite her on the bar is Alek, who looks a bit tipsy. You see that he's been taking drink after drink from Heloise.

Greetings gents. I'm actually piddling around with the notion of a proper VC RPG, based mainly on VC 1, and I'm going to implement classes that work to focus your character. Rather than having a BAB & Saves + Specials every few levels, they'll just mark a few of the skills as Talents, which will get your Edge modifier; which starts at 1 and goes up 1 every 5th level, becoming +6 at level 20 (and no, it' snot d20; 20 just works as a major level cap for this # range). Past level 21 you'll just get 1 skill point every odd level. Otherwise, characters will be getting to increase the rank of two skills by 1 ~every 3rd level, and gain more Health (based on archetype and Vitality) ~every 4th level.
Also, the core attributes are extreme abstractions of Vitality, Coordination, Intelligence, and Charisma; which players assign a -1, 0, +1, and +2 to at level 1 and don't touch again.

NOW, I'm not going into a game that's not even in an 'alpha' form yet, and ask the question I came here to ask: What should the Classes be?

Here's my current plan:

Engineer - mechanic + pilot
Fencer - melee fighter
Lancer - tough heavy soldier, w/ lance spec.
Medic - field medic
Scout - survival & scoutting, +support fire
Shocktrooper - rounded
Sniper - stealthy support fighter
Spy - stealth and cunning (inspired by this thread)

To be fair, you're sure that it would've been a very nice cocktail, if the taste wasn't hidden behind all the sugar and sweeteners. At least you didn't pass out or throw up.

"It's uh..." You cough. "a bit too sweet."

"Everybody always says that." Heloise pouts and takes a sip herself. "I don't see anything wrong with it."

"Yeah... about that..." Can't you try toning it down a bit?

"I'll think about it." Heloise says as she cooks up a new cocktail, obviously not heeding your suggestion.

"And how did you rope Alek into being your guinea pig?" You ask, pointing to him.

You nod grimly. Depending on the family, bastard children were either treated as outcasts, or worse than trash. What was universal was that bastards were automatically disqualified from inheritance.

"So I'm guessing you got kicked out?" You ask.

"Yeah." Alek nods as he wobbles back and forth. "As soon my dad died, my mom kicked me out with nothing but what dad could finagle out of the family fortune."

"That's the spirit." You slap him on the back reassuringly. You hope that he'll actually remember this little pep talk when he wakes up in the morning.

"Sorry, Heloise. No offense, but I don't think your drinks are for me." You say apologetically.

"Ah, it's no big deal. I've heard other people say worse." Heloise shrugs.

You then wander off into the midst of the party again. There's still one member of your squad you've yet to talk to. Unfortunately she also tends to be the hardest to find.

Fortunately for you, though, it seems Tarin had made an exception for today. For once she seems to be at the center of attention, playing the dreaded age old knife game.

"Oh, I have all my fingers, the knife goes chop, chop, chop!
If I miss the spaces in between, my fingers will come off!
And if I hit my fingers, the blood will soon come out!
But all the same, I play this game, 'cause that’s what it’s all about!

Oh, Chop, Chop, Chop, Chop, Chop, Chop, Chop,
I’m picking up the speed,
And If I hit my fingers then my hand will start to bleed!"

Everybody sings as Tarin goes faster and faster without any apparent concern or fear.

"Hey! Jager!" Jack ambushes you from behind again. "You should try challenging her to it!"

"Already tried, mate. Twice" Jack raises his hands and you see several fresh cuts on his fingers. "She's a goddamn prodigy at it, I tell you."

"And I'm eternally grateful she decides to use it for the forces of Good."

Nah, we don't challenge her, that's a terrible idea.

But putting our lot in with her, have her challenge someone and put our hand on hers as a handicap for her and a guarantee that we'll be the one who gets cut if anything goes wrong.

It shows trust in her, makes the game more interesting, and she'll still win.

"Seems you're having a good time." You say to Tarin.

"I guess." Tarin shrugs. You notice even as she's shrugging she manages to keep perfect control of the knife.

At that point, the song finishes.

"That's the sixth one in a row!" Someone shouts.

"She's gotta screw up eventually." Another person in the crowd says.

"Hey Tarin, how about we spice things up a little?" You walk up and put your hand over Tarin's.

Tarin blinks and frowns. She's obviously not used to this sort of intimate contact.

"Are you sure about this sir?" She asks.

"Don't tell me you're losing confidence in your abilities already." You say.

"They're your fingers." Tarin warns and readies her knife.

You would be lying if you said you weren't at least a little nervous while Tarin started stabbing the table dangerously close to your fingers at ever increasing rates of speed. However, Tarin manages to get through the song without stabbing any fleshy bits.

"Nice job." You say, wiping some nearly formed sweat off your brow.

"It was nothing, sir." Tarin says.

It's then you notice that Tarin's been sweating profusely, something that you hadn't noticed in her earlier attempt.

"Look, Tarin," you say, taking a seat next to her, "I can understand if you don't want to talk about it, but I can guarantee me and the Demons will back you up. We're family. A crazy, dysfunctional, heavily armed family, but a family nonetheless."

Tarin is silent for what seems like a long time before finally speaking.

"You remember I mentioned I used to live in the Empire? I was part of the Darcsen resistance since I was old enough to hold a knife." She then sighs sadly. "My father didn't want that sort of life for me, so he smuggled me into Gallia. He stayed behind, and I haven't heard anything from him since. I guess I figured joining a mercenary unit like yours would increase my chances of finding him."

What does he look like? Is there a good way for us to recognize him since we don't know him like you do?"

"Look Tarin, if it means anything, I can't promise you we'll find him, but I promise that me and the Demons will try our hardest to. If you haven't noticed, we got people from all corners and walks of life of Europa here. Someone's bound to know something."

Tarin nods but doesn't say anything.

"So, who is your father anyways? What does he look like?"

"Well..." Tarin shifts nervously. "I haven't seen him for years, so his appearance might have changed, but he's a White Darcsen. The Imperials call him Edwin the Direwolf."

"Thanks. I'll see what I can do."

"Thank you, Jager -I mean- Captain." Tarin says.

Wandering off back into the crowd, you feel the alcohol beginning to overtake you. Your addled mind gets a devious idea, and you make a beeline for Sam. You see she's gone back to her regular routine of drinking men three times her size under table. You just waltz over and pick her up.

"Whoa, hey, Cap! What're you doing?!" Sam wails.

"Sam, this party is just too damn QUIET. Gotta show these people the glories of some good old GALLIAN ANTHEMS." You then set her down on the bar. Clearing your throat, you start roaring out a popular Gallian marching song.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TtKU_rSelvM

Eventually, Sam joins in, and the rest of the partygoers begin joining in as well, though not very well since it's a song not well known outside of Gallia.

Not to be outdone, Jack and his SOE squad respond with their own Albion military anthem.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XsW4FoRzhQw

And then as a compromise, you start singing another anthem both nations would know.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8ft371DLlo

Then Sam clears her throat and stands up on the bar.

"Ummm, this song's kinda new, but I kinda want to sing it, for all those men and women who didn't come home." She says a bit meekly.

She starts off a bit weak but you recognize the song she's singing. It was pretty much Gallia's new unofficial national anthem.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9_Bgoaf_xYk

You don't join in because you feel that you won't be able to do the song justice like Sam does.

By the time she's finished there's not a dry eye in the building.

"For Albion!" Someone yells.

"For Gallia!" Somebody else yells.

"For the fallen!" A third person yells.

And the party resumes.

Honestly can't really remember much beyond that point, but when you wake up the next morning, you have an odd, satisfied feeling.

Then you see a letter on your desk. You pick it up and look at it with bleary eyes.
