Haha! Looks like I actually got some time off today, so lets do some more VALKYRIAN MERCS QUEST!

Archive: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Valkyrian%20Mercs%20Quest

Don't know what the setting is? Check it out here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valkyria_Chronicles

Since it's another unscheduled session, we'll be doing another side chapter today! Choose your adventure!

>A certain ruthless guerrilla fighter.
>A certain friendly lancer.
>A certain hyperactive cook.

So, I caught yesterday's thread in between running Tavern Quest. Very Rejoice worthy, our little spy is quite the killer. If I were you, I'd keep an extra eye on her.

Oh, and the fact that the whole thing was half and half despair and Bond references was a plus.

As for today:

>A certain friendly lancer.

You are Samantha Wellings, and it is just another day at the office.

If you can consider a bombed out village an office.

You're part of Squad 6, whose busy acting as a rearguard for retreating Gallian Regular forces after the Imperials broke through their defensive lines... yet again. Honestly you think your squad would do a better job than these pansies.

However, orders are orders. Unfortunately, the problem is that Squad 6 doesn't have many members, and this was a very big village. Your commander came up with the plan to split the squad up and fight the Imps guerrilla style. It was insanely risky, but it was honestly their only alternative.

Since you're the unit lancer, it's up to you to ambush the incoming Imp armor as it tries to pass into through the village. Fortunately for you, it seems like the regulars were retreating so fast that the pursuing Imp armor was outrunning their infantry support, so you don't have to worry about being ambushed... for now.

Checking up on your squad's meager armory, you've got two choices of lances to use.

Lancaar: One of the oldest and most respectable of lance designs, the Lancaar is a very reliable, though not very precise, weapon. Can use both armor piercing and frag lance tips.

Theimer: Nicknamed "The Tamer" by Imperial armor crews, the Theimer pattern lance has vastly improved accuracy and armor penetration over the Lancaar. However, due to its design, frag lance tips are incompatible.

>Choose Lancaar

>>
>>24736481
>Choose Lancaar

>>
>>24736481
You decide to roll with the Lancaar today. You never know when you'll run into some infantry.

There's still a large column of retreating Regulars. The whole image of one lancer headed to battle while hundreds of men were going the other way seemed patently ridiculous. It was probably why none of the Regulars could bear making eye contact with you.

You frown when you notice you're pretty low on lance tips. Maybe someone in the retreating column could spare something.

>See if the Regulars can spare any extra ammo.

My thoughts are a flashback Involveing some Sort of marriage Promise pinkie swear that in the future makes her seriously doubt her oaths. Since your 'oath' happened before hers to the emps.

Also, secret weapon for conversion or to make her lose her will to fight. Your own wedding vows. -shit-! I'm sitting here playing VC1 and I see there's a quest for it. Awesome. Then I see people picked the Lancaar over the superior Theimer. Dammit. Lances are hysterically inaccurate and frag rounds are crap at doing that thing we're supposed to do, which is kill tanks. That being said, all it takes is one scout running up on us like a hyperactive hedgehog and we're done like dishes.I suppose the frag rounds will help prevent that sort of thing. I just wish lances weren't so damn inaccurate. Or that we had someone - anyone - on support fire, so we could use the Theimer.

>Think I'm going to implement a new rule that nat 1s will cancel out the highest roll, just to spice things up. Thankfully for you guys, 16 is still a success.

The Regular lancers frown and look at each other for a second. One of them shrugs and says, "Hey, it's not like we need them."

"Plus that'll give us another excuse not to hang around on the front." Another says sagely.

Between the lancers, you get two extra AP rounds and two more frag rounds, giving you a total of six AP and three frag rounds.

"Hey, kid." The the third lancer hesitates for a second. "Good luck out there."

"Don't need luck, just my trusty little baby here." You pat your lance, which already has six marks scrawled on the side, one for each tank you've killed so far.

With that, the retreat column disappears into the village. Already, you can hear the distant rumble of approaching armor. You've been fighting long enough to tell the difference between Imp and Gallian engines.

Remembering the layout of the town, you've got several choices in where to set up.

The bridge, which served as the main entry into the village, was a pretty big choke point, and blocking it off would mean the Imps having to risk fording the river or finding an alternate route. However, you can only engage tanks from the front there, since there's no safe way to flank them on the bridge.

The square is a big, open area where the tanks will funnel into. Lots of cover on the perimeter, but the tanks will have more room to maneuver.

The alleyways were the easiest place to ambush tanks, but due to the cramped nature of the area, you could easily be ambushed yourself.

You decide to keep an eye on the bridge. You've set up in a perfect position in a two story building overlooking the mouth of the bridge. If you angle it right, you can probably hit the tanks from the top, where their armor was much thinner.

The wait seems to take forever, but eventually, you can see the Imp armor slowly break the horizon. You can see the first wave is just light tanks in a tight, single file formation.

How sloppy, you think. The Imps were obviously being extremely overconfident.

You wait as the tanks begin crossing the bridge. You experience has taught you to wait until they get as close as possible. Lances were notoriously inaccurate, and you had to make every shot count.

Your lance shot gets a solid hit on the front of the lead tank, causing it to screech to a halt. However, the tank isn't completely knocked out, to your dismay, though judging from the hole punched into the armor where the driver is supposed to be, it's definitely a mobility kill. The other tanks in the column screech to a halt as well. It seems they haven't spotted you yet.

You decide to reposition, loading a fresh lance tip as you dash down the stairs. You have a secondary position set up in a small copse of trees that gives you a flanking shot on the bridge, even if the range is a bit far.

On the bridge, you can see the commanders of the remaining tanks have popped out of their hatches and are arguing with each other over what to do.

"Hey! Sam!" Your radio crackles. "I assume that little firework show was yours?"

"Damn right it was, Dan." You reply. "You got eyes on the Imps?"

"Yep, and I got my crosshairs on what looks like the head honcho."

You grimace as for a brief second, the lance tip flails in the air and it looks like it's going off target. However, somewhat miraculously, the lance tip suddenly tilts back on course and punches into the side of the rearmost tank, blowing of the track.

At this point, the Imps have had just about enough and start firing randomly in hopes of hitting whatever is shooting at them.

I don't like that 17.

Also: Hahaha! Hope they like being stuck on that bridge.

Depending on how damaged the tracks are they can be there for some time.

And fortunately, they aren't even anywhere close. With a track blown, the rear tank can't really move. Even though replacing the track was a relatively easy fix, that would mean the crew would have to exit the tank, which was plain suicide with Dan keeping an eye over things.

"You know better than to ask that over the radio. Never know who's listening."

"Cut the chatter." Lieutenant Brixton says sternly. "Continue your mission to harass and interdict Imperial forces. Maintain radio silence whenever possible."

With the bridge blocked off, the only path armor can take to cross the river is a shallow section to the north end of the village. However, the crossing is well away from the buildings, meaning getting into a good firing position would leave you exposed.

You set up in a three story building overlooking the river crossing. It's a bit farther that you would like, and the crossing is quite a bit out of the Lancaar's ideal range. However, you've got a commanding view and the high ground, so hopefully it will work in your favor.

As if on cue, a new column of tanks begins to approach. This time it's a medium tank flanked by two light tanks. They stop at the edge of the river for a few seconds before gingerly edging into the water, like a swimmer putting their toe in to check the temperature of the water.

>>24739334

The revolver is amazing in CQC, especially in RO2. You can usually get the first shot due to its increased mobility, so even if I take a MP40 burst to the chest, the guy who shot me is usually bleeding out right afterwards.
>>
>>24739344
>Use your ragnaid. This is a bad time to be wounded.
Mobility is our most important asset. A tracked light dies fast.
>>
>>24739344
Normally you'd ignore a minor wound like this, but in this situation, having impaired mobility is pretty much a death sentence. You pull out your ragnaid from your back and twist it. The small contraption releases a bright blue glow before going dark. You feel the pain in your leg melt away, and you test out your leg. It's like nothing happened.

"Dan, I need eyes." You say. Already you can hear gunfire and explosions as what is presumably the rest of your squad begins engaging the Imps.

"It's a mess down there, Sam." Dan says. "The infantry's finally catching up to the armor elements. In addition to the three tanks that just crossed the river, I've count at least company strength number of infantry moving in. I have no idea how many are already in the village, so watch your back."

"Got it." You nod. You make a quick count of your lance tips. You've only got three AP and three frag rounds left.

The squad can hold out for a while against infantry, I think. Once the tanks get in on the scene, it's gonna be murder. Take out the tanks first.

You decide to hunt down that enemy armor that crossed the river. You can't let it link up with the infantry, or else there will be no stopping them.

Mentally recalling the most likely path the tanks will take through the village, you have a good idea of what route to take to head them off.

You manage to find the damn medium tank that managed to elude you the first time. It rumbles past you, trying to push its way deeper into the village. You see your chance and sprint forward, ending up directly behind the medium tank. Again, in the tight confines of these alleys, its impossible to miss. The medium tank goes up in flames, much to your satisfaction.

"Attention Squad 6!" Brixton announces. "The village is overrun. I repeat, the village is overrun. All active units fall back!"

Damn, and you still had one more tank to take out. Guess you'll just have to let it go.

"BELAY THAT ORDER!" A new voice bellows, nearly making you yelp in surprise.

"Who is this?" Brixton asks.

"This is General Kusher of the 2nd Gallian Royal Rifles! You will send reinforcements to cover our retreat! We're in the northwestern section of town!"

That doesn't make any sense, all of the Regulars should have pulled out by now.

"Look sir, there's Imps crawling all over the village, and our path of retreat goes south. There's nobody I can send!"

"We require assistance you and will provide it!" Kusher roars.

"Sam, are you still alive?" Brixton asks.

"Ready and waiting, sir." You reply.

"Look," Brixton sighs. "I can't in good conscience order you to do this, but you're the only one near the position of that ass. You can go and bail their asses out, or you can retreat with us. It's your call."

"I can't leave fellow Gallians to die, sir. I'll go." You say.

"I was afraid you would say that." Brixton sighs. "Be careful out there."

Slinging your lance, you begin double timing it to where General Kusher's unit should be. It's really not that hard, since all you have to do is follow the sounds of gunfire. As you get closer, you get a clearer picture of what's going on.

You see a number of Gallian regulars pinned down behind some cargo trucks, returning fire with a similarly sized blob of Imperial soldiers. Both sides would have been relatively evenly matched if it weren't for the light tank providing fire support. You see a couple of lances fire off at it, but both shots are wide and hit harmlessly in the sides of the buildings behind it.

You got one AP round left, but 3 frag rounds.

>Use the AP on the tank.
>Use the frags on the infantry.
>>
>>24740329
Hit the tank. Since the other lancers just fired, if they see us destroy the tank they might be able to switch to frags, in which case we all dump frags on the infantry together. That should buy enough time to get out.

You decide to get the hell out of here. Even with frag rounds, you doubt you could handle an entire squad of Imp infantry on your own.

However, as you turn to run, you see more Imps coming from behind you. It looks like the reinforcements had caught up at last. With no choice, you try to circle around the retreating Imps. You take an alley path that you hope the Imps won't use. Unfortunately, as you sprint down, you see a pair of Imps appear at the end of the alley. You slide to a halt and try to draw your lance, but its too heavy and unwieldy and the Imps beat you to the punch.

"Not so fast, sweetheart." One of the Imps says, holding you up at gunpoint. "Drop the lance."

"How about no." You say. Summoning all the speed you can muster, you slam your elbow down on your holstered lance, flipping it so the front end is pointing toward the Imps and you hit the trigger, literally hipfiring the weapon.

The weapon bucks in your hand as the frag round launches, hitting one of the Imps square in the gut before exploding, turning both of them into paint on the walls.

However, since their weapons were already drawn, the Imps manage to get some shots off as well. You feel several hammer blows against our chestplate, knocking you down on your back. Stunned from the impacts, you can't do anything as you see more Imps coming in from the opposite end of the alley. One of them points toward you and they start moving forward. You try to reach for your lance, but all you can do is wave your arms around feebly. Even if you did reach it, it would do no good since you'd have to reload the damn thing anyways.

Suddenly, you hear a roar of SMG fire and the Imps are cut down in a hail of bullets. You lift your head up to see a Gallian shocktrooper headed towards you.

"You mean you seriously don't know?" Jager seems almost hurt.

"Sorry I apparently don't get out much."

You suddenly burst out laughing. You're not sure if this guy was crazy, pulling your leg, or was the real deal, but you're too amped up on adrenaline to really care at this point.

"Hey, that wasn't supposed to be funny." Jager scowls, flicking a finger into your forehead.

"Hey, this may sound pretty sudden." Jager says, looking as the village slowly disappears over the horizon. "But how would you like to transfer to the Regulars under my command? I lost a lot of good people in that battle and I need people I can trust."

"Really?" You ask, "Aren't you a bit too hoity-toity since you're a noble for a common girl like me?"

"Look, I'll put this straight." Jager says, leaning forward. "Not many people would have willingly tossed themselves into the frying pan like that just to save some asshole General and his men. Even fewer have the skills and insane luck to do it and survive. Not to say too much, but I got some serious trust issues at the moment, so it really means a lot for me to reach out like this."

You run things through your head for a second. His intent seems genuine enough, and getting into the Regulars does have its perks. However, you can't just up and leave Squad 6 like that.

"I'm really tempted by the offer, but I'm afraid I can't in good conscience leave my squad without saying anything to them." You say.

"Oh, that's no problem. I'll recruit them, too."

"Hey, look here, Cap- wait what?"

"I'm technically the ranking officer right now." Jager shrugs. "So I pretty much call the shots here now."

"Well then," You say, still a bit bewildered, "I guess we've got a deal."

"Excellent!" Jager grins and ruffles your hair again.

"Quit it!"

"Sorry, I can't resist. You really are like a little kid!"

"Gah!"

And so in the flames of battle, a rather unusual friendship was forged...

>>
>>24741600

Hey, just saying no one can act surprised when she garrotes one of our men at Lynch's behest. Even if she does have a good cry afterwards.
>>
>>24741619
Brillant and Julia, according to the original drawfag.
>>
>>24741623

Lynch knows it isn't in his best interest to double cross our relationship with him. And by the time he does, we might have enough points on Elizabeth to make her think twice about it.

...probably. Hopefully.
>>
So I just got through reading the archives recently and I realized Merc Command passed up an opportunity to fuck with us after that apology to Sam.

>>24741623
I'm more interested in a different implication. She seemed pretty interested in our whole war-torn love story and with what's happened to her that kind of makes sense.

Now consider her decision on her own war-torn love story.

She's no better than Karla.
>>
>>24741639

Actually, she's worse in a way. Karla could have killed Jager and didn't.

>>24741635

I hope you're right, but after that side chapter I am not sure Beta can be truly converted, any more than you could truly subvert Bond.
>>
>>24741623
Which is why I said before that at the first sign of betray she gets a lead injection.
>>
>>24741656

I was against the deal in the first place, so I am behind you there. A face full of rounds and a watery grave.
>>
>>24741656
Jager doesn't seem the type to execute people like that.

Then again, we're nursing a healthy suspicion on Lynch. And Jager did say he's having trust issues in this side story. It might not be that farfetched at all.
>>
>>24741639
Could be she sees us, Jager and Karla, as a chance at redemption. A way to make it all right, be absolved of her sins.
>>24741655
Lots of people are willing to kill for Queen and Country as long as they still BELIEVE in Queen and Country. But if they get fucked over by Queen and Country? That changes things. All we need to do is earn her trust, wait until Lynch inevitably hangs her out to dry, and then we offer her work.
>>
>>24741689
I'd think Jager would be extremely aware of people that might betray him after the whole burning mansion thing.
>>
>>24741698

I think that is optimistic as fuck, but we'll see. We should have no qualms about ending her if she endangers our men or us though.
>>
>>24741689
Plus if the events of that thread ever reach him that's at least one giant character conflict right there.

I kind of still see her being converted, just not really on the closest terms with Jager
>>
>>24741711
>trying to kill Bond
Yes, because that ALWAYS works out so well for the ones doing the killing.
>>
>>24741716
Jager probably won't mind her backstory that much. She was a soldier, and he knows how it is to be duty-bound. He is, however, fiercely protective of his men. When push comes to shove, he'll most likely choose what's best for the Devils.
>>
>>24741732

As long as he doesn't go for theatrics and just shoots there's a chance.
>>
>>24741732

Generally speaking, its because they try to kill him using increasingly elaborate deathtraps. I propose a bullet to the head. Or the crushing weight of the sea's depths. Or both.

I was thinking more of the parellels between her and Karla. Both her and Beta are women who completely fucked over men that liked them to serve their country. I don't really see that sitting well with Jager.

Maybe she can help him come to terms with Karla's betrayal though since she's can emphasize with Karla's decision.
>>

If we don't flip out then there's the usual d'aww times and possibly some sort of combination of the above if she turns out to actually be psychopathic.

>This isn't really paranoia at this point. It's good sense.
No it's paranoia.

>>24742012
>It's not paranoia if they're out to get you.

Then why not kill everyone in the squad. I mean they must all be out to kill us clearly. Alex is Imp lets start with. How about that Darcsen? Clearly can't trust her. Just shoot her. Clearly Sam can't be trusted either. She's been playing us all this time just waiting to take over our spot in charge. Just hang her.

It's fucking old. Drop the stupidity.
>>
>>24742121

Really? Our 'paranoia' isn't hurting anyone, and it may someday pay great dividends. In this specific case, with this specific spy working for this specific shifty character, a little bit of suspicion just may be warranted.

It's not stupidity when people disagree with you. You need to drop that point of view. We will all be here, every thread, no reason to antagonize each other.

And you kinda went hard strawman with your examples there.
>>
>>24742121
The paranoia stems from her being recommended to the squad and as a result she doesn't have the same amount of trust as the people who have been with us the longest. Implicitly trusting someone who is new is foolish at best. What makes her an even larger candidate for distrust is from where she came from.
No matter what is said, the spy division of any nation gets into many unsavory actions, and she was said to be among the best of them. Granted as mercenaries the Demons have probably done many things that can be considered wrong, but that was done collectively by them.
>>
>>24742165
>Really? Our 'paranoia' isn't hurting anyone, and it may someday pay great dividends. In this specific case, with this specific spy working for this specific shifty character, a little bit of suspicion just may be warranted.

And yet there hasn't been any reason to have this train of thought for our 'spy.' Has she not been on the up and up with us in our dealings? What reasons has been given beyond being a spook, for Jager?

>It's not stupidity when people disagree with you

It's not that they disagree with me. It's moron plans people start putting in place with this train of thought. It's that stupidity I do not want to see. That always leads to nothing but it endless bitching by the people who put them in place when it blows up in their face.

>And you kinda went hard strawman with your examples there.

No worst than you.
>>
>>24742268

From Jager's perspective, she reports primarily to Lynch. Lynch is his employer, to be sure, but this is not an implicit bond of trust between for a mercenary. He distinctly requested Jager take her on, and we know her to be reporting on our actions. In Lynch's office, it was explicitly noted that he had Gallian troop positions marked as well as Imperial. While not unusual for an intelligence agency, it does not exactly make him out to be a moral paragon. It is a reminder that his goals are not necessarily ours, he pays us in the short term but our endgames are possibly contradictory. She is not truly a member of the Demons, and until she manages to become one Jager's first priority is to the men who currently follow him. She is not an immediate threat by any means, but an agent of an outside power among his men should not be implicitly trusted simply because she is currently helping him.

I hope that has made my thoughts on the matter clear.

And I have never strawmanned you, or anyone else here, please do not misrepresent facts.
>>
>>24742327
Also, albeit this is meta-knowledge (as well as the Oswald thing, btw), Federation chucklefucks are going to sponsor a goddamn civil war in Gallia. Hence, our alliance with Lynch is hardly permanent and we might part on less than friendly terms.
>>
>>24742378
Actually, that in particular might not sit well with Beta. We don't know her well enough to be certain, but it's possible she's not down with that shit.
>>
>>24742378
Keep in mind that unlike the Empire, the Federation is not a singular entity. It's an alliance of various republics with their own self interests who share a common goal in not getting steamrolled by the Empire.
>>
>>24742421
Hence "might".
