You are Princess Lydia Tannhäuser Von Cygnus Gates the third, duchess of Tannhäuser and executive director of the Royal Rocketry Corps of Midland. It is now turn 17 of the year 714 of the Gates Dynasty, and Tannhäuser isle is being hit hard by a Typhoon. Fortunately you evacuated to the Principality of Westrin to attend the Fall Equinox festival.

Currently Dame Cohbham is drunk and telling Galimberto Nestle how much she loves the tiny snack cookies his company makes. He has expressed interest in licensing the tangy orange powder your astro-knights mix into the drinking water.

As you are talking, Colnel Smith arrives with The Dean of the Acadamy of Natural Philosophy and a young man whit bleach blond hair. Apparently he wishes to be introduced to the Professora.
>>
>>24734816
We shall ask the identity of the Young Man, and find Professora Minerva.
>>
>>24734833
The Bow bows and introduces himself as Klaus Jonckheer in a mild nordo-suthish accent. The Dean tells you that he is the academy's star pupil, and that he shows incredible talent in radio-alchemy. Apparently "Frau Pallas" has always been his idol. It certainly says something when he meets with a princess to be introduced to a lowly scientist.
>>
>>24735062
>nordo-suthish accent
Somewhat suspicious, but nothing concrete enough to stop him.
We shall grant his request, and introduce him to the Professora. But do not let our guard down around him.
>>
>>24735107
There are a lot of white people living in suthland. They are the descendents of Nordic raiders, but then again, so are you.

As you wander through the crowd looking for Minerva, he talks about radio-reactive theory and practice. He seems to be well informed, maybe even a bit obsessive. The Dean wasn't lying, this kid is barely older than you and seems like he's powered by radio-elements himself. His manners are perfect, but he's filled with energy, and seems ready to build a reactive-pile right here in the center of the party.
>>
>>24735254
How fascinating. If a background check clears him, then we may want to bring him in for working on our radio-reactive generator project.
>>
>>24735254

Maybe the lord protector and some guards can wait with him near the punch bowls as we go grab our professora.(BACKGROUND CHECK THE INCREASINGLY ENERGETIC MAN!)
>>
>>24735431
As this is a social event, the only guards present are the Lord Protector, and to a lesser extend the Colonel and Dame Cobham, who are wearing swords with there dress uniforms.
>>
>>24735572
Make sure that Lord Pero stays near us, and let us find the Professora.

>drunk Cobham
We slightly begin to regret making Cobham the first human in space. If we had known that she would be prone to such bouts of public drunkenness, Sir Waleys or Dame Palmer would have been better choices.
>>
>>24735572

well I'm sure the professora won't mind talking with this guy.(why oh why are there so few guards at a festival with multiple important people, have there not been any assassinations or kidnapping of at these events?)
>>
>>24735789
But they didn't score near as high and besides we may still yet add them to the space program.
>>
>>24735800
The Patriarch has his own guards, and many of the guests either have there own bodyguards, or are accomplished duelists themselves.

>>24735789
Waleys and Palmer are still on the second Roster.

A background check would take time, but for now you can always introduce him.

You find Minerva accompanying Amelia, who looks bored until she spots Klaus, and then sort of just hovers behind her teacher eying him. Minerva is much more mannered and waits for you to introduce him.
>>
>>24735986
We shall introduce Klaus to the Professora and to Amelia. We shall take part in their discussion of radio-reactive theory as best we can.
>>
>>24736084
Seconded
>>
>>24736084
Klaus has tons of questions, most of which Minerva just can't answer for security reasons. The boy however also has intresting ideas about elemental fusion. A radio-pile or reactive-bomb both use the principle of elemental fission, where elemental particles are split, releasing the contained energies.
Klaus however thinks the reverse should also be possible, and that an even greater amount of energy would be released.

At first Minerva thinks this is silly and disapproves of the boy's idea of making an even larger bomb "why on earth would you need MORE than 10 thousand tonnes of conventional explosive equivalent!" but halfway through she seems to realize something and becomes lost in thought, as if she had just got an idea. Klaus doesn't realize this and just keeps talking.
>>
>>24736431

we'll have to drop him an invite to the island at some point, and slate him as somebody with interesting ideas that we wouldn't want the Huns to get their hands on.
>>
>>24736431
We shall have to consider offering him a position in the RRC's Energy Development Division.
"Mr. Klaus, we understand the theoretical possibility of elemental fusion. But for a sustained reaction, the enormous pressures and heat involved seem impossible to construct. Have you any ideas as to methods of containment?"
>>
"Containment?" Klaus looks like he hadn't considered what to do with the energy once released.
>>
>>24736844
Of course. If you want it to function as anything other than a bomb, you need a method of channeling the energy.
>>
>>24736844
"Yes, containment. Surely more can be done with a continuous chain reaction maintained at criticality than a single burst of explosive power of super-criticality.
"We hope to develop a radio-reactive pile for power generation purposes very soon in the future. A fusion reactor would potentially produce more energy, if only the chain reaction can be maintained."
>>
>>24736918
"And even then if you need a way to keep the workers safe, because of radioreactive sickness from the materials isn't that right Professora."(we should know about radiation sickness right, that was documented right?)
>>
>>24736918
"I figured I solve that out after I find out how to get the particles to combine properly first." He smiles innocently with a shrug.

>>24736985
(Yes, many alchemists have died from cancer messing around with radio-reactive elements. it is now known that harmful waves are emitted from radio-reactions, which can disrupt one's vital humors)
>>
>>24736943
>maintained at criticality than a single burst of explosive power of super-criticality

We might be getting our fission and fusion concepts confused here. Such is hardly very becoming of us, and could add a considerable amount of unnecessary confusion to things.

>>24736985
Acute radiation poisoning should be a well known phenomena before the first fission bomb is constructed. The long term effects will take a few decades, and suitable statistical methods, to make themselves known.
>>
>>24735789
Yes, maybe we should excuse ourselves from this discussion and see if we can get the Dame to sober up. Hardly the image we wish to project of either our Void Knights or the nobility in general.
>>
>>24737128
"Professora, is something bothering you?"

Take notice that Minerva is thinking on something.
>>
>>24737305
You snap the Professora out of her cognitive trance, and she returns to her senses. "Oh yes, Lydia, may I have a moment alone please?" She asks after a few moments.
>>
>>24737380
Of course Professora, what is it?
>>
>>24737380
"Of course, Professora."
Since the Dean of the Academy is already here, we shall ask him if we can rent lab and work space for further development of our projects.
>>
>>24737380

"Of course, I'm going to mingle. I hope to see you later Mr. Klaus"
>>
>>24737604

We should hire this guy, at least before anyone else does.

Would the Dean want to see us and Mrs Cobham (when she's a little more composed) speak at the University?
>>
Minerva and Perro trade places and she ushers you aside to have a word in private.

"This boy has a dangerous mind, but his ideas on fusion interest me. If the anomolies we are seeing are artificial, they would have to be the result of a sustained fusion reaction. I am just afraid He's obsessed with the limitless energy, and dosn't care about how it's used."
>>
>>24737998
"Ok, and what do you want to do about it? I'm sure we can hire him on under you, or we can give him a nasty letter to stop. What do you want to or think we should do about it?"
>>
>>24738106
"It's up to you and the Colonel. I'm only here to watch my pupil, and advise her in her future endeavors. I left the RRC officaly a few years after you were born, and only serve as a civilian consultant now. You know this."

"That said, the Dean seems eager to put another of his students into your organization. If you allow him to study with us, I'm sure he'll be able to lend you more resources."
>>
>>24738517

By all means let's hire him. Better in spitting out than out spitting in, and he's clearly motivated.
>>
>>24738630
Lets not jump into this boat before we check it isn't leaking.

Lets talk to the Dean about hiring the possibility of hiring the lad, after we complete a full background check and ensure that he signs all of the proper security documentation.
>>
>>24738517
"Professora: If you think his mind is dangerous, it may be best to keep it aimed at tasks of benefit to mankind. If we were to take this young man on, would you be willing to help shephard him towards more socially concious products? I would rather his mind be harnessed by the Nords to our detriment."
>>
>>24738676
With a mind like that, we may need to either put him to use out of reach of the nords or put him under.
>>
>>24738734

I think we have an agreement.

Has Mrs. Cobham made a fool of herself irrecoverably, or did she get away with it?
>>
>>24738838
We may need to appoint a handler to steer her back to her room.
>>
>>24738838
Ms Cobham seems to have gotten away with it. Mr Nestle thinks talking with a drunk Astro-Knight is amusing, and is genuinely interested in licensing the powdered drink mixture.

You head back to the main ballroom and tell the Dean that you would love to offer Mr Jonckheer an internship if he can pass a security test and be sworn to secrecy.

The dean also accepts the offer to have you and members of your staff give a lecture to the students once class resumes next turn, and would not mind allowing you to borrow a lab or too at all. He seems very glad for the publicity this will bring.

>>24738861
The Colonel is escorting her back home right now.
>>
>>24738966

That sounds like a good deal! We should work on the automatic computer; radio-reactive research is best kept isolated and safe. We can do that in our Secret Island Hideout With Launchpad For Doom Rockets.
>>
>>24739031
We super-villain now...?

But seriously, accept the Dean's offer. This is a good deal for both parties, especially if we can keep this lad out of the hands of the Nords.
>>
>>24739135
We should probably appoint someone to sit on him while we are running the background check. I would hate for him to take a trip with some nice nords that happen to be pressing a pistol to his ribs.
>>
>>24739211

If Minerva is okay with it, he can start tagging along with her immediately -- both are key personnel that need protection anyway, and probabl have a lot to talk about.
>>
>>24739211

or promises to help him build that stuff for free if he just teaches them how too.
>>
>>24739211
The professora agrees that focusing on computer research, at least until you get back to the island to build more secure facilities, is a good way to test Klaus, and she agrees to keep an eye on him under the guise of mentorship.

Having a Foreigner on your team might be risky, but he's too valuable to leave out in the open.
>>
>>24739341

We already have Prince Orion.... Is this at odds with the usual immigration policy? Because brain drain is a good thing if it's coming in.
>>
>>24739372
We just have to ensure that he can't leave.

He isn't a prisoner, just a guest...who can never leave.
>>
What shall you do now?

Shall you retire for the night, or go find more people to talk to?
>>
>>24739692
I say that we retire for the night, and strongly suggest that Dame Cobham does the same.
>>
>>24739692
Talk to dean of the academy. Procure Research space.
>>
>>24739692
We had ought to pay our respects to the Patriarch for the party. Also, we should see if there are any who wish to do business with the RRC. Especially those in mettalurgy, as we could probably use some higher heat alloys.
>>
>>24739800

This, but we're set for other things. Let's just enjoy the rest of the evening
>>
>>24739842
No, it's business time. Talk to Dean, talk to patriarchs, talk to everybody.
>>
>>24739880
Yeah, I agree. We had ought to work the room like a royal is trained to do.
>>
>>24739880
Talking to everyone at once would be rude. Whom do you give your attention to first?
>>
Rolled 93

>>24739880
"Yesterday during a festival of the summer solstice princess Tannhauser went crazy and attempted to talk to any person that was within 15 feet and asking them if they would like to visit her island and to go to space. The royal family has no comments on the situation."
>>
>>24739969
Let's go with Dean of the Academy.
Then the Patriarch.
>>
>>24739981
This is the Fall Equinox not the summer solstice.

>>24740003
The Dean wants to know just what you plan on working on while you are at his academy, and what topics your lecture will cover.
>>
>>24740054
A lecture on orbital mechanics, and we will work on a vacuum tube based computational machine.
>>
>>24740054

We were thinking about a small automatic computer that's clever enough to operate a camera and keep it pointed at the ground. It will have to operate in space so it can't be water-based.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MONIAC_Computer
>>
>>24740054
Perhaps we can have the Professora give a seminar on observed versus modeled physics of the launches and re-entries. Make this a stealth vehicle for modeling plasma sheathing. Tell him about our plans regarding radio reactive piles, photovoltic technology, and automatic computers.
>>
>>24740538
"An automatic computer. Not what I was expecting at all, but I suppose it makes sense now that I think about it."

You continue to hammer out specific arrangements and exchange pleasantries for a few more hours.
>>
As you continue to discuss things, the party winds down and it is soon time for you to return to the Embasy and go to bed.

It is also time for your GM to go to bed as well.
I regret to inform you that I shall be attending the Astrological Society's meeting on Saturday night, so this quest will have to wait till next Tuesday. I apologies for any inconvenience.
>>
>>24741265

Have fun!
>>
>>24741265
>Astrological Society

That better be a typo.
