You are ELIZABETH PARKER, (probationary) spy and SOE operative for the Albion Intelligence Service. The year is 1933, and you're being sent on your first assignment.

Currently, you're sitting in a train bound for the Imperial city of Meinhard, considered the center of the Empire's heavy industry. Unfortunately for you, it seems like Lynch wasn't willing to spring the funds to get you a seat in first class, or even second class seating. Nope, you're stuck in economy, where all the poor and the Darcsens are seated. Not that you have anything against Darcsens, but the car was packed like a sardine with very few creature comforts. It could've been worse, though. You could've been packed into a crate or something like that. You at least have a decent seat, since apparently it was apparently the law on Imperial trains to make space for non-Darcsens.

You're starting to like this country less and less.

"Attention passengers." The intercom squawks. "We will be approaching Meinhard Central Station in fifteen minutes. Please have your belongings ready and prepare for arrival."

You double check your belongings. Of course, you couldn't bring your favorite AIS-issue beret. That would make you stand out a tad. In order to enter the city unnoticed, you're dressed as a student, since Meinhard boasted many prestigious engineering schools. You had to study up on basic engineering principles for MONTHS in order to get your cover identity straight. However, you feel a bit naked without your regular gear, which you couldn't bring with you due to the current climate in the Empire. Rumors of war have increased tensions to the point where pretty much everybody was getting searched. Thankfully, there's supposed to an AIS cache in Meinhard you can take advantage of.

You mentally try to recall your mission. You of course couldn't carry any incriminating documents with you, so you had to memorize all of your mission details.

You're here to...

>SABOTAGE

...you remember that you're here to sabotage some kind of new weapons project the Imps were cooking up. AIS wasn't quite sure what the Imps were working on, but it had to be BIG, judging from the amount of materials being poured into Meinhard.

So, you have the dual mission of finding out what exactly the Imps were up to, and then destroy it by any means necessary. Simple enough.

As you exit the train, you can see quite a number of Imperial troops milling about the platform, all led by a black-coated officer. Immediately, the Darcsens around you recoil in fear, possibly just out of reflex. As the train grinds to a halt, the doors to the cars swing open and the passengers begin to disembark. On cue, the Imperial soldiers move forward and start pulling random people out of the crowd, "asking" them to let themselves be searched.

Even though you're not carrying anything incriminating, you'd rather avoid attracting unnecessary attention.

>Move with the crowd and try and blend in.
>Wait till most the passengers get off, then try and slip through while the guards are distracted.

Are VC2 n' 3 as bad as they look?
These threads made me buy VC 1, and I haven't finished it yet, but I'm having fun. When I looked into the sequels 2 seemed 'okay,' but 3 just looks horrid. I'm also fidgeting around with a proper RPG for the setting.

VC2 by far is the weakest in the trilogy. The designers were obviously trying to experiment with mechanics that looked good on paper, and the shift to a high school setting definitely turned off a lot of fans of the first game.

VC3 is actually pretty decent, besides the starting valkyria and ridiculous sword cannon. It also addressed some of the gameplay weaknesses from VC2, except still being PSP only.

. . . why? How do you logically come to the conclusion that the way to take a war centric franchise is 'teenage drama?' One of the best parts of VC1 was when Welkin says, "I'm 22!" I was revealed that I wasn't playing another 30 year old teenager.

You decide to hang back for a little, letting the rest of the passengers exit first. As soon as the Darcsens exit the car, the Imps swoop in, herding them all to one end of the platform where they could inspect each and every one at their leisure without fear of any slipping away.

Fortunately for you, this means most of the guards' attention has been diverted away from the train itself. Taking your chance, you exit the car and begin walking briskly, being careful not to walk too fast to outpace the other passengers and make you stand out. The guards don't even notice you and you're almost home free when you hear a shrieking sound behind you.

Turning around, you see that a Darcsen boy has broken free from the pack and was sprinting for the exit, the guards running after him shouting to stop. You notice to your dismay that the kid is headed right for you, since you're on the way to the exit as well.

You can see the fear in his eyes. Whatever's going to happen to him if he gets caught, it won't be pretty.

>Help the kid. You can easily "accidentally" get in the guards' way.

Fuck if I know. Some of the characters in the game are pretty good, such as Zeri, but Avan is a piece of shit.

Thanks to your SOE training, you've got quick enough reflexes to sidestep the approaching freight train of hurt. You look on as the kid races past you and onto the street. Four guards follow him out. One of them pauses for a second as he passes you, tips his helmet to you.

"Sorry for the inconvenience, m'am. Can't take your eyes off these rats for a second." He then rushes out the door as well.

You notice that with the commotion over, the rest of the crowd has returned to their regular business. The guards don't give you a second thought, but you can see some of the Darcsens in the crowd giving you some rather poisonous looks. You pretend not to notice them, but it bothers you all the same.

You decide to take a quick survey of the surrounding area. It was still rather early, so there was still quite a number of people milling about on the streets, making it easy to move about with a relative amount of freedom. With your student disguise, nobody gives you a second look.

After strolling around for an hour or two, you get a rough idea of the layout of the town. The northern sector was primarily factories and foundries, and where your target was most likely to be. The center of town was where Meinhard's commercial district and technical schools are located, which means you can move about in that area virtually unmolested in your student persona. The western and southern areas are mostly residential areas for Imperial citizens, while the east was by and large a slum for the Darcsen factory laborers.

"M'am! Excuse me, m'am!"

You turn to see where the voice behind you is coming from, and your heart freezes when you see the same Imperial guard from earlier running up towards you. His body language suggested he wasn't in any sort of fighting or aggressive stance, but who knows what's on his mind?

Looking at the state the guard is in, you honestly feel a bit sorry for the guy. However, the spy part of your mind is telling you that this is a major opportunity.

"Hey, don't worry about it. I thought it was very sweet." You say, putting a reassuring hand on his shoulder.

"Y-you think so?" The guard says.

"I'd at least like to know your name."

"O-oh yeah!" The guard straightens up, raises his visor and salutes. "P-private Oswald Weissritt, 1st Meinhold Defense Force, at your service!"

It takes some effort to hide the surprise on your face. Oswald is barely any older than you are. You at least came to terms with your young age due to Lynch believing it would allow you to elude suspicion in covert operations. It seems the Imps recruited them young.

"Ah, Katina Elzworth." You say, remembering to use your cover name instead of your real one.

"It's a p-pretty name!" Oswald nods furiously. "You're a student here, right?"

Sensing your opportunity, you decide now is the time to strike.

"Yes! I've just recently transferred here, and I heard that Meinhard was busy producing some kind of new wonder project! I came here to see the best Imperial engineering has to offer!"

"R-really?" Oswald scratches his head, then leans forward conspiratorially. "You know, not many people are supposed to know this, but one of the factories I guard has this really cool new tank!"

"Really?" You're genuinely interested now, and you let it show. "Can you show me? Please please please?"

"W-well, I can but..." Oswald shifts uncomfortably. "I'm not really supposed to show anyone, and I could get in real big trouble if we're caught..."

While it certainly is tempting to get access to the Imps' secret project right away, you're nowhere near prepared for it. Better to play it cautious, though there's no reason not to milk the moment for all it's worth.

"It's okay Oswald, I understand, I wouldn't want you to get in trouble for me. I'm being selfish, I'm sorry." You say, putting on your best sad puppy face. You even managed a fake tear. The AIS acting instructors were very good at their jobs.

"It's alright! I totally understand! It's way too sudden for that sort of thing!" Oswald says, then lowers his voice. "Hey, I have a shift there tomorrow night. I know all the other guards' routes and I know a way you can get in without being noticed. Just promise not to tell anyone!"

"Not a word." You nod.

"Cool! Just uh, meet me here tomorrow at midnight! I'll see you later!"

Oswald then runs off, and you see him link back up with his three buddies from earlier, who were apparently watching the whole exchange. You can't hear what they're saying, but from the whoops and brotherly back patting and thumbs ups they're giving him, they're pretty stoked about what he did.

So, you've got about twenty four hours.

Feeling confident that you've accomplished enough for today, you make your way to where the safehouse is. It's innocuous enough, being at the back end of an apartment complex commonly reserved for students. Inside is a basic apartment with all of the basic necessities, with a large box in the center of the room with note saying "To use at your discretion."

>You can carry up to THREE items. These have varying levels of concealability, so choose wisely. Basically, HIGH stealth rating means it can pretty much pass any security check, MEDIUM means it will elude casual observation, and LOW means it's pretty much impossible to hide unless you hide it in a bag.

Garrote: Basically just a piece of wire, the garrote is a quick and quiet way to eliminate foes from behind.
Stealth Rating: High

Lockpicks: Makes you a MASTER OF UNLOCKING.
Stealth Rating: High

Ragnaid: Basic healing item.
Stealth Rating: High

Brass Knuckles: Small and concealable melee weapons that give your punches a bit more oomph.
Stealth Rating: Medium

Knife: Deadlier and more utility than a garrote, but a bit harder to conceal.
Stealth Rating: Medium

Silenced PPK: A compact, silenced pistol to silently eliminate enemies from range.
Stealth Rating: Medium

Truth Serum: A powerful, experimental drug that can compel the target to tell the truth when questioned. Side effects may vary.
Stealth Rating: Medium

Bulletproof Vest: A vest with overlapping armor plates woven into it. Provides some protection against small arms but restricts movement slightly.
Stealth Rating: Medium

Starlight Goggles: Experimental goggles that allow you to see in low light conditions. Image quality still isn't very good.
Stealth Rating: Medium

Demolition Kit: Explains itself.
Stealth Rating: Low

Silenced SMG: For when the PPK isn't enough.
Stealth Rating: Low

You decide that maximum stealth would be the most prudent course of action here. You take the most concealable items: the lockpick, garrote, and ragnaid. Confident you're ready for the mission tomorrow, you let out a big yawn. You're going need a lot of rest in preparation for the mission tomorrow.

---

The next day at midnight, you're back at the town square. Due to the circumstances, you decide to just keep wearing your student uniform. While not exactly romantic, it was the most pragmatic, as it didn't draw any attention and you were able to move around easily in it as well.

"H-hey! Over here!" You hear Oswald call out. You turn to see him running up to you with a large duffel bag. "Here's your way in!"

He then unzips the bag to reveal a full Imperial soldier uniform.

"It's actually my spare." Oswald grins. "It might be a bit big for you, but the Empire's philosophy is 'one size fits all'!"

"So your plan is to sneak me in as a guard?" You ask.

"Yep!"

>>
>>24718247
"That's actually pretty cool." You admit. Oswald wasn't just leaving the door to the chicken coop open, he was literally opening it for the fox to waltz in.

"Yeah, as long as you're dressed as a guard, the other guys shouldn't ask questions. Well, unless we run into an officer..." Oswald continues, "but they hardly come down to the factory floor anyways!"

It takes a while to get the uniform on. Since you want to preserve your modestly, you basically just wear it over your school uniform, since that gave you the added bonus of being able to quickly discard the soldier disguise if it became a liability.

As Oswald leads you through the factory district, he tries to start some small talk, which you indulge him with. While you only give him the bare minimum information needed, Oswald can't seem to stop gushing about himself in front of you. However, you learn that he's been born and lived in Meinhard all his life. The city's importance to the Empire's war capability is a very big deal for him, and is a source a pride. You almost feel a bit bad that you're job is to completely demolish it.

Almost

"We're here!" Oswald says, pointing to a rather large and menacing factory complex. "Just follow my lead."

You nod and he leads you to the front gate, where a very bored guard makes a half hearted attempt to stop you both.

"Whoa, Oswald, who's that you got with you?"

"Just a new recruit. The Floor Manager wants some extra security for the Special Project, so I gotta show this rookie the ropes."

"Ha, don't envy your job." The gate guard laughs before waving you two through.

"Alright, are you ready?" Oswald is unable to hide the grin on his face as he gets ready to open a large and very heavily locked door.

"Yeah! I'm so excited!" You fake-squeal.

"Ta-da!" Oswald opens the door and you see your target for the first time.

"Wh-whoa..." You gape as you tilt your head upwards to get a full view of the monster in front of you.

"Heh, I figured you'd say that." Oswald laughs. "The guys here say it's the biggest one they've ever seen built. They say the prototype here should be ready to deploy in six months, and ready for mass production in a year or two!"

However, you're too busy just trying to accept that the steel monstrosity in front of you is real. You knew that the Imps' tank technology was leaps and bounds ahead of the Federation, but you never knew they were capable of THIS.

It had to be destroyed. At all costs.

However, you know that you can't just destroy the prototype here. You'll also have to find the blueprints and destroy those as well. While you doubt it'll completely scuttle the project, you hope it'll at least delay it long enough that the Federation would be ready for it.

Oswald is still gushing over how amazing the monster tank is. This is your chance.

You decide now is the time to act. The thing here looks almost complete.

"So, who designed it?" You ask, walking around to get a better look at it.

"Not sure, really. I occasionally see some top brass and some scientists around here, but they haven't really told me anything."

"And does it have any weaknesses?"

"Well, I overheard the engineers talking about problems with heat dissipation. The current fix is just to manually vent it by opening up the radiators, which exposes them to enemy fire.I think they were cooking up a fix for it somewhere here, too."

Well, that was a third objective to worry about. Confident that you've gotten all you could, you decide now is the time to strike.

"Hey, what's that up there?" You ask, pointing up to the tank's cannon that happens to be right behind Oswald.

"Oh that? Well, it's supposed-"

The moment Oswald turns his back, you strike, wrapping the garrote around his neck. Oswald silently gags as he gasps for air he can no longer breath. However, you find yourself struck with a dilemma you never thought you'd find yourself in. Kill him or spare him?

With the garrote, you could feasibly just choke him until he loses consciousness, rather than let him suffocate to death. Your trainers taught you how to do it, after all. However it was a very precise art. The difference between life and death was one literally measured in seconds.

>Kill him.

Despite how much you wanted to spare him, in the back of your mind, you knew it was a pipe dream. Oswald saw you, and he knows your face. Even if he didn't know who you REALLY were, the risk was just too great.

After gently setting his corpse down and stashing it safely away in an empty oil barrel, you realize that you're crying.

You decide to look for the blueprints first. After all, those could be used to build even more of these monsters. Also, if this project was as secret as you thought it was, then the Imps most likely only had one master copy, to keep it from falling into the wrong hands.

You deduce that the blueprints would be in the foreman's office, which is situated above the factory floor. Since you're dressed as a guard, you just waltz up the stairs like you own the place. You see a couple other guards pass through the factory at regular intervals, but they don't give you a second glance.

At the foreman's office, what is presumable the foreman or at least an engineer filling out paperwork as he downs a very large mug of coffee. Right behind him, on the work bench, is a roll of paper that is clearly the schematics for the monster tank.

Does he have a coffee pot with him? Could we 'accidentally' bump his cup to spill it, apologize, and then he'll go get more coffee.

Are there any steam pipes nearby? Things we could have cause noise and draw his attention away and us as a passing guard could say that he's an engineer and he might want to have a look at it.

Stashing the body under the desk, you roll up the blueprints and drop them into the wastebasket. A small torch you find on a nearby work bench is enough to set the plans alight, quickly burning them to ash.

Your first objective done, you casually stroll down to the machine shop the engineer pointed out. Indeed, you find the radiator fix he was talking about. It seems like a bunch of random tubing and pipes that you cannot even begin to fathom how it works. It's already loaded on a cart so you decide you can demolish it along with the tank.

But the problem is, how are you going to destroy it?

If this is a working factory then there will be tons of stuff lying around other than fuel and ammo. Gas for welding. Oils and solvents for servicing. That sort of thing. If there is a large furnace or boiler around we could pretty easily rig this place to blow sky high.
>>
>>24720597
Unfortunately, you don't find anything convenient like munitions or demo charges, but you find lots and lots of ragnite fuel. Fortunately for you, they're getting ready to test drive the tank soon, so it's fueled and ready to go.

You've got enough knowledge on how to operate a tank. You're sure you can get in, but the trick is climbing the tank without anybody noticing. After all, even dressed like a guard, that sort of thing would seem suspicious.

"I know, right? Lazy bastards." The guard shakes his head. "Carry on."

As the guard walks away, you use your lockpicks to open up the hatch. For such a large tank, you note that it's incredibly cramped inside. Nonetheless, you managed to find what you assume is the driver's seat. The controls are easy enough to figure out. After all, they wanted regular tank drivers to be able to operating this thing. You find the ignition switch to turn on the engines.

There's two ways to go about this. You can just leave the tank idling and lock the radiators in. According to what you've learned, the tank will eventually overheat and catastrophically fail. Or, you can take a different route and disengage the brake, letting the tank go on its merry way and demolish anything in its path. It makes a clean getaway hard to pull off, though.

>>
>>24720912
This. And they can't exactly clibm a tank rampaging its way through the facility.
>>
How guarded is this tank? Is it just one guy on patrol?

Could we somehow get Oswald's body into the tank and lock him in so when the tank blows they'll find his corpse and think he was behind it all?
>>
>>24720866
What reason do we have to believe that this tank can't be repaired after failing? Unless it's loaded with ammunition and is going to explode after overheating I don't think we should go with this plan; it might not be a permanent solution.

Sure, creating a fuzz as big as this would just attract everyone's attention. Any avenues of escape will then be guarded, and good luck trying to get out with the whole place buzzed. Doing it quietly like this would give us enough time to get away before they notice anything wrong.

Of course, there's still the matter of the tank possibly not getting wrecked as it should be if we take the stealthy choice.

You decide to opt for the subtle option and just leave the tank idling. Considering how lax the guards are, they'll probably think it's just all part of the plan, and the only guy who could say otherwise is a cold body inside the foreman's office.

However, just to make sure, you douse the entire driver's compartment with some of the extra ragnite fuel you found and set it off, consuming all the controls in blue flame.

You manage to exit with no problem, since none of the guard have reason to believe you're suspicious. However, just to make sure, you stay in the general area for a bit. About an hour later, there's a dull WHUMP, and the factory complex holding the tank suddenly goes up in flames. Since the fire and explosions were caused by the stored ragnite fuel, and all the evidence was destroyed, the whole affair would be logged as a tragic industrial accident rather than sabotage.

Satisfied, you return to the safehouse. However, the moment you begin to let yourself calm down, the implications of Oswald's murder suddenly hits you like a freight train.

For the next several hours, all you can remember is sitting curled up in the corner repeating the words "I'm sorry!" over and over again while openly bawling your eyes out. No matter what you do, you can't seem to get his face out of your head, especially during his last moments. It hangs in the back if your mind, haunting you side by side with the same dark side that convinced you to kill him in the first place.

"I'm so sorry, Oswald! I'm so sorry!"

---

Three weeks later, and you're sitting in Lynch's office for a debriefing.

"You performed and excellent job, Beta." Lynch says, nodding in approval as he reads your report. "You completed all of your assigned objectives without cluing in the Imps that we were involved. A nearly flawless operation."

"Yes sir." You say, somewhat emotionally drained.

"I understand you also had your first kill on this mission."

You nod absentmindedly.
