Events Summary:

After escaping the sudden arrival of two angels, you retreated to Jacob's Field and sowed discord in the Kanian army. Sir Flint met you there the next day and convinced you to return to Evinbrook to fight against an approaching Kanian army, led by a demon lord.

You met Ila, a shadow mage who helped you restore the Velarion and hunt mages. You also met the succubus, 'Annette', who pledged loyalty to you after witnessing your prowess, and who seemed to know something about Sir Flint's magic parasite. However, thinking her an enemy, Ila killed her.

The duke's plan to pierce the shield protecting the core of the Kanian forces succeeded. After a chaotic battle, you've secured the ground for the duke's forces. You managed to defeat the demon lord with the assistance of Auriel and Sir Flint.

After the battle, you tried to help Sir Flint and Auriel copulate, but once their ignorance potion wore off, they had a negative reaction to your 'help'.

Well, you did your best.

Auriel has decided to join you, Flint, and Joey on your journey to find Adavan and Abigail, supposedly to protect your other two companions from yourself.

You've learned that, while she is stubborn in her prejudice against you...there are certain precedents that make it so. Whether you can convince her to abandon old assumptions is an open question, and in any case, you're not sure if you truly feel compelled to do so.

>DM's Note: the books section has been updated with "Notes on Ritual Summoning", which highlights mechanistic differences between itself and normal raw-spell summoning, as follows:

Ritual summoning reduces the magical input and maintenance required by the mage. In exchange for a long period of preparation, great creatures can be summoned even by those will little raw magical power. Instant-summoning spells require strength of will and mana, so ritual summoning is a good starting point for any mage, regardless of natural talent.

A warning: ritual summoning should not be attempted alone. Any summoning circles should be checked and rechecked a MINIMUM of 5 times to ensure accuracy and safety. Unless experienced, do not summon demons with power or influence over mind or emotions; such demons will readily sieze any opportunity to make their summoner lower his defenses.

Ritual summoning consumes the reagents it requires. The summon in question can be maintained indefinitely, as long as the user has some mana remaining. Unlike normal summons, the presence of the creature does not continually drain mana. However, they do not take orders like normal summons, either. Their presence is governed instead by the command structure built into the summoning ring. The creature summoned will respond ONLY to this command structure - a potential weakness, when comparing ritual summoning to raw summoning.

Rituals, in short, must be constructed with the greatest caution. New mages SHOULD NOT deviate from tried-and-true ritual circles in any fashion, and any deviations to achieve new effects should ALWAYS be checked by another individual.

Learned Abilities

-----------
-----------

Supersonic - Fly at supersonic speeds. You'll move extremely fast, but suffer a large penalty to stealth and magic stealth. Takes 1 turn to activate.

Mimic - Take on the vague form of things you've seen. Won't stand up to close examination, but works well in the dark.

Snuff - You shadow can put out the lights it touches.

Blink - Sight-range teleportation. (Cannot blink through walls, through the ground, into places you can't see, etc. 5-turn cooldown in battle. Auto-cooldown if battle ends. You can only Blink yourself and inanimate objects on your person. Max range 1/4 mile or 0.4 kilometers)

Shade - Create an illusory projection of yourself to confuse enemies. (dodge buff. Costs 1 mana)

Water Strike - A pressurized blast of water imbued with magical force. (2 base power. Costs 2 mana)

Purify - Spend 3 Mana: 100% chance to heal 1 ailment on target. Spend 6 mana: 85% chance to heal all target's ailments. Spend 9 mana: heal all of a target's ailments and the ailments of all those you are physically touching.

I'm not going to lie, seeing this made me squeal

Lets go check on the status of Jacob's Field... maybe snag a few Mages if we can. Apparently we all want healing asap.
>>
>Last Time...

<You said I cannot expect you to forgive me, just like that,> you begin. <But I wonder. What is it that I have done that needs forgiveness?>

"How about consuming an angel, for starters?" Auriel says.

<He forced me into it. I'm not sure if you noticed in your time with him, but Raziel was completely insane.>

"Passionate in his duty. Bloodthirsty, it's true. But some of us got that way after decades of the stuff. You become what you do. If you knew something other than the end of his blade, you might think differently of him."

<It sounds like you are scrambling for justifications.>

"I made a statement. I wasn't scrambling for anything."

<It matters not. In then end, I was merely defending myself from immediate and reactive prejudice.> You glance at her. <You said those trying to get Erebus's attention were at fault. It sounds that in this instance, mankind was evil, not the shadow. You would hold Erebus responsible for their actions?>

"He could have - should have - stopped them. It would have been finished with but a command from him. His inaction let people die. He's no less guilty than they are."

<If Erebus was truly at fault,> you say, <I would have helped stopped him or his self-proclaimed underlings myself, no matter what element they were. Element, I find, matters little in determining what is good, and what is evil. It is on this point we disagree.>

"It's easy to say that, 700 years after the fact," Auriel says. "Actions speak louder than words."

<That, we agree on.>

You turn, and glide toward the other end of camp, keeping a close watch on the night.

ALL OF MY READY!

First thing we should do is talk to Auriel about Abigail, and how she should act to the little gir who we and Flint had save from being burnt at the stake. Let's mention that Flint might be very happy with her if she is nice to Abigail...

Also, we should ask sometime about WHY Auriel seems to care so much about Flint, and when she started. If she doesn't fess up let's mention what we were talking about last night to Flint...
>>
>>24686308

A few people pointed out that you would have plenty of regeneration time through the night to fully heal, so I've acknowledged this by bringing you to full health.

I think that needs slight nerfing, however.

From now on, regeneration will heal you to a maximum of 2/3 of your HP, unless otherwise stated. In exchange, regeneration will start on the very same turn you fall below 2/3, rather than the turn after. I'll note this in the ability list for next time.

MOTHERFUCKER

So I did.

Nightflare - Disrupt target spell or enchantment. (costs 2 mana)

Bind - Trap an enemy in ropes of spirit magic. May spend 0 to 10 mana (determines strength).

>spending 0 mana on bind, ever
>well...whatevs
>>
>>24686429

>Also, good to see you, SM!

The dawn slowly comes without your camp being disturbed. You do a few laps around the surrounding plains, but find little other than a nest of rabbits. You kill two and drag them back to the camp.

Flint and Joey seemed pleased by your find. If Auriel is tired for having spent the night awake, she doesn't show it.

After the three of them eat, they mount up and trot up along the river, staying away from the road farther inland. With a war on, that's an invitation to be set upon by bandits, or worse.

Do you have anything to say to Flint or Auriel before you reach Jacob's Field?

You jog along the horses at an easy pace. Your 'legs' waver and stretch in the sunlight. Even you think you look a bit odd - a shadowy nothing on top of stretching stilts. But it gets the job done.

You shorten your stride and go even with Auriel. <What has Flint told you about who we're looking for?>

"...a young girl, with Spirit magic. And a local specialist to whom you both entrusted her, an alchemist of little note."

<...and what is your opinion on Abigail?>

"She needs to be taken to the empire so her magic can be sealed. Barring that, she'd be separated from her soul, but I think you made your opinion clear on that option."

<What if I like neither option?>

"Then we have a new problem. I'm not about to let a talented spirit mage raise an undead army out in the wilderness."

<Abigail would do nothing of the sort. She's nine years old.>

The angel gives you a hard look. "Donovan already told me she could commune with latent spirits and accidentally summoned an undead creature. That young...it's unusual."

You stare back at the angel. <Let me make something clear,> you say. <I am tolerating your presence, not the other way around. If you try to harm her - by which I mean my OWN definition of harm, not yours - there will be dire consequences involving your immediate health.>

Auriel stares you down for a good while, then eventually sets herself straight on her horse. "You don't get it, shadow. Do you think I enjoy persecuting a girl that isn't old enough to appreciate her position? Do you think I enjoy persecuting you, even? I can face facts. You've done good. You've helped Donovan, and the people of Jacob's Field. You fought the Kanians, and killed the demon lord." She glances back. "That's not the point at all. Even if you yourself are good, your existence creates shadow magic, creates physical unbalances. The elementomachy was a combination of fiction between peoples and too much magic. One way or another, that has to be dealt with, and the safest, surest, and least cruel way is to simply remove the source of instabilities. Let's say I can trust you. I can't trust the next lich, who'd use your power for his own ends. Yi Fang proves that in Archon every single day. The only reason he hasn't attacked the empire is because we face a greater threat in the Black Lady, yet still his schemes try to poison us from the inside. So my apologies if I seem a skeptic to your liberal attitudes - I've only the evidence of seven centuries riding behind my words."

You fall silent for a time. This woman believes what she says with a conviction wrapped in the same iron she wears, and she's fought for those ideals for much longer than you've been around. It might be impossible to talk her out of them.

But if you could...if SHE could change...

An experiment, then. Like she said, actions speak louder than words.

And if she still doesn't change...

...you're always hungry.

<Have you heard of a person called Adavan?>

Auriel glances at you sharply. "...where did you hear that name?"

Bring Flint into the conversation first. Talk to him about Adavan and that he should have told her about him in the first place, then mention to her about him and let her know that if Adavan dies at her hand today, Flint might die fom that parasite on him. Even if he doesn't die, he'll be really pissed, so much so that she might not be able to breach the wall she put in front of her...

So just putting this out here, but why are ALL the flight-based birds extinct? Nature is much more clever than that. Migration would virtually stop(and those forests would still be fucked) and a LOT of them would die but many more would adapt. Utilizing the same tactic that Auriel used to avoid the sky-sever is one thing that could happen and adapting nest building for shelter during winter over migration and stockpiling food is another. Predatory birds will become a lot less effective, particularly ones that rely on fish for sustenance(but some of those have swimming capabilities so they may take to a dive, resurface, and glide style of movement and hunting), but even quite a few of them could manage to get by.

Might be too soon for them to physiologically change but I can see a lot of behavioral changes that could keep at least some of them around.

<What would you do if you found out what happened to him?>

Auriel pauses, then shrugs. "...an old bit of the past, settled, I suppose. It's not like he's still kicking. I doubt he survived the fight when the four greater elementals finally pinned Hecate down."

<A moment.> You leave her looking curious as you sidle alongside Flint. You speak so only he can hear. <...have you been listening?>

"I got the gist," Flint said. "Can you try to drop the shadow against light discussion? That's the kind of thinking that caused the Elementomachy. We need to put aside differences and focus on how - "

<That's all well and good,> you say, <but what happens when she sees Adavan, still alive, a lich?>

"...I hadn't thought out that far," Flint mutters.

<I'm going to tell her.>

"I don't think that's a - "

<Good idea? Obviously not, if you lied to her about it. But what happens when we find them and Abigail is put in danger because Auriel reacts...badly?>

Flint swallows. He licks his lips, then nods. "...let me do it." He clicks his heels, and trots his horse over toward Auriel. You follow. Joey watches the comings-and-goings curiously, but doesn't say anything.

"Highest, there's..."

"Donovan. For the last time. Auriel."

"Ah...Auriel."

She smiles. "Yes, Donovan?"

"About the alchemist with Abigail...he's...Shadow brought him up with you. His name is Adavan. He'd been sealed under the forest near Jacob's Field for some time."

"...you...let one of Hecate's generals...alone...with another budding spirit mage..." Auriel seems stunned. "Donovan. There is optimism...and then there is stupidity." She grips her reigns so tight the leather squeaks. "...what have you done?"

Flint waves his hands rapidly. "It just turned out that way! I had three thousand Kanians to deal with!"

<I was the one that made that decision,> you say.

Which is exactly why I stated they would do something similar to what Auriel was doing to chase us. It dp\oesn't take much to realize staying in the sky too long = bad.

It's not like every single bird was in the air and not a single bird egg was unhatched at the exact moment the sever occurred.

<... and if he has hurt her, I will kill him Myself!>
>>
>>24687492
We should use that tone of voice, but remember we're trying to keep her convinced that we are both not murder happy and a voice of reason in this world. It's going to take a whole lot of work to get her to stop viewing Shadow as the element of chaos and source of violent instability and oppression in this world...
>>
>>24687417

"...then you're even more naive than he is," the angel says to you. "Unbelievable. Absolutely unbelievable. I was informed of the trail he'd left us. He'll lead us, alright. Right into the wilderness, then abandon us to our own devices. You're both mad." She stares at you. "You entrusted an innocent little girl to -a lich-. With the time and preparation you've given him, she could be a complete slave by now."

"...no," Flint says. "I don't think he'd do that. Despite his...history...Shadow stopped us from fighting. We came to an understanding."

"And then you promptly turned your backs on him. Hyperion help us."

<If he has done anything, there will be nothing left of him when I am finished.>

"Little good that will do the girl!" Auriel shouts. "For spirits' sake, you're both incorrigible!"

<And yet here you are, riding along side us with the whole rest of the world to get back to in the exact opposite direction,> you say. <In any case, we need Adavan's expertise in dealing with Flint's parasite. Unless you know something about it, and you haven't told us. Because at this rate, it could very well kill him.>

"...I haven't even sensed it," she says.

<Then we don't have a choice. I can see it, but no one else. No one. And I believe following the trail back to its source is too dangerous without guidance.>

"We're going to hell in a handbasket." Auriel clicks her heels, spurring her horse a bid faster. "I only hope I'm strong enough to save you from your stupidity, Donovan."

Flint sighs, and you continue onward.

>anything else you need to discuss, post now. Otherwise, adventure time!

New Theory: It's due to the repression of various elements that an Elementomachy occurs.

You'll note that Shadow and Spirit mages have a tendency to be sealed, enslaved or killed? Maybe that's why we came into being, because the Shadow element is unable to express itself in any other manner.

Either that, or that an Elementomachy occurs every few centuries due to some sort of Magical cycle.

We are not Erebus, Erebus was simply the name of the Elemental Lord that preceded us.

Did you know, adavan told me about his history... it was amazingly similar to yours. Family and friends butchered by the light, non combatants slaughtered for their affinity with the shadow. Many years of pain and betrayel.

Also, flint explained to me that magic begets magic. If you truely wanted to prevent all conflict you would have commit suicide and set laws to slay all mages not only those of the elements opposite of yours.
>>
>>24687577
<Well, there was a succubus that could see it. She pledged her loyalty to me before Ila skullfucked her with a dagger. What say you, Auriel? Would you like to assist in a spot of demon summoning?"
>>
>>24687354

Your argument is perfectly valid. Plenty of flightless or less-flying birds still exist. Chickens, domesticated ducks and geese.

The thing is, the Sky-Sever would kill the birds before they got back to the ground. Birds can't observe to learn as readily as we can; they'd fly up, up, and then be dead before they knew what happened.

Birds that you think would survive did survive. Birds that migrate or otherwise fly for long periods while hunting or scoping out their territory for food would die.
>>
>>24687644
In which case the second theory makes more sense.

The Elementomachy occurs on a Magical cycle between the personifications or most powerful users of a particular element.

The elementomachy happened the same reason religious wars happen. a bunch of little kids with a lot of power having a shouting match whose element is better and more holy than the other which turns out a little bit more violent than a shouting match.

>>

I don't see how wild birds could survive.
So lets say some ravens are super smart and figuredout flying is insta death. How do they survive? They are NOT designed for WALKING.
They cannot run from predators, their legs cannot handle long walking, they cannot reach their food... they are simply fucked.

>>24687726

>>
>>24687577

>>
>>24687799
Same thing as before, thing with ravens and crows is they are low-ground scavenging birds, usually picking out targets from not that high up at all before landing and moving to another spot. If it hurts to fly to long they can hop and glide, which is what those kinds of birds do with slight injuries to legs or wings anyways.
>>
>>24687737
>>24687746
>>24687774

Actually, I didn't mean the Elementomachy, I was speculating on the nature of the existence of beings such as Erebus, Hyperion, etc.

I believe we are the same kind of being as Erebus, but not Erebus himself. Instead, we are the personification of the Element of Shadow, just as Erebus was before us.

Each of these personifications comes into being every few hundred years at about the same time due to some sort of Magical cycle.
>>
<Actually, there was a demon that could see it,> you say.

"...you exhaust me," Auriel says. "First a lich...and not just any lich. And now, demons? Are you insane?"

<I ignored it,> you say. <It spontaneously decided to follow me, and fight alongside me. For what purpose, I don't know. I was toying with destroying it. In any case, it related that it could see Flint's parasite. I have no pretense to ally myself with demons, but under controlled conditions, perhaps a summoning might be worthwhile.>

"...a last resort," Auriel says.

<On a side note - >

"Enough!" Auriel said. "Do you ever shut up? Talk, talk, more talk! I thought shadows were quiet!"

<Does it bother you to confront and be shaken in matters you had long thought black and white?>

"Shut up!"

<Adavan told me a story much like yours,> you say. <Amazingly similar to yours, in fact. Family and friends butchered by the light, non-combatants slaughtered for their affinity with the Spirit or Shadow. Many years of pain and betrayal. Yours is not a unique case, Angel. Have you considered that those you fought felt the same about you as you do about them? I wonder, if they had won, would the world be as it is now, but flipped, with Light mages hunted or made slaves? It wouldn't make the Shadow right. They'd be just as wrong as you are now.

<I suppose 'ifs' and 'buts' are only good for discussion,> you say. <But it was the feelings he related that made me trust him. Even then, they were written plain on his face, as yours are written on yours. Strange, though - I find that an angel has most in common with a lich.>

You fall silent. Auriel remains unresponsive. Her face is clenched tight.

"You've said enough, Shadow," Flint says. "When a lady asks something of you...you should respect it."

<I see. Then silence, until the angel requests otherwise.>

"Don't hold your breath," Auriel mutters.

<I don't have to breathe.>

An ugly look crawls over Auriel's face, but she lets it drop at that.

Ravens and crows survived, sure. I'll throw ground owls there for kicks. They have greatly reduced populations, but some have adapted.

That is a good point.

Perhaps it's more of an existence issue.

There must always be an Elemental Lord, but nearly all of them were killed during the Elementomachy.

Fast forward a few hundred years, and suddenly, the world has given birth to 7 new Elemental Lords.

Unless... SM did we sense the Spirit of Earth when we were on the Throne?

>must...kill...all...misunderstandings

The other three lesser elementals - water, earth, and spirit - fell individually. Water vanished. Spirit also vanished; one PLAYER theory is that Spirit is what is sealed under Jacob's Field, but this is unconfirmed. Earth was driven mad by a curse via Hyperion and trapped in an endless cyclone of winds by Aeolus.

With them dead, eventually all four greater elementals took on Erebus at once. That resulted in what is known as the Mutual Annihilation Event, erasing all five of them, too.

It's been too long.

You wonder what it is about her that draws you to her. She's just another human...and yet...pure. Much to grow, much to learn...

Perhaps you see something of yourself in her.

"Shadow?" Auriel asks. "Is there a trail here, or not?"

Besides we just agreed to not pester her as much, maybe we can pester flint then.

I am more concerned about the speed of our progress... horses? Maybe we can carry them both and leave the horses behind?

Curiosity is making Shadow ask questions about such things, and if Shadow is taught that all this romance and mating stuff is used as a way of expressing affection, then it will most likely consider that perfectly valid, even if it doesn't quite get the physical appeal of some of the things it's supposed to do.

Nothing's stopping you from playing a character that randomly snaps and consumes everything.

Just saying.

No one would vote for that in numbers to make a difference, though.

It's been five days since you started traveling, and it's been rather uneventful. Flint is noting your progress on a map. You've skirted the towns and villages you've come across the river, not wanting to draw much attention. You're now only half a day out from Detson.

<Flint, something I've been meaning to ask you.>

Flint stops rooting in his bag for his tobacco and looks at you. "Yes?"

<What are tits?>

Flint quickly glances around the spot at the river at which you'd made camp to take a midday break and water the horses. Auriel is some distance away, splashing water on her face. He leans close. "...a woman's chest...ah...has, ah...two breasts."

<I know that.>

"Tits are...those. Slang. It's...rather lewd."

<I find it odd that some words are lewd and some are not, despite the fact they have the same meaning. I suppose that's just humans.>

Flint shrugs. "I guess. You're the only outside perspective I've got." He nods. "Thanks for keeping quiet, the past few days. I think..." Flint glances at Auriel again, then back to you. "I think losing her powers hit her hard. And I think she's giving more thought to what you say than you realize. I get that feeling when I speak with her. I'm glad for it."

<...hmm. Actions speak louder than words.>

"I guess."

"What are you two mumbling about?" Auriel asks. She's walking toward you.

<Tits and outside perspective.>

Auriel flushes slightly, then shakes her head. "And you can stop right there."

In short order, your companions mount up once again.

>on to Detson...
>>
>>24688704

Speaking of curious about human stuff. Didn't SM mention something about Shadow wondering about wearing clothing after 50 Humanity or am I remembering something wrong? I at least remember the clothing thing mentioned if not the number of Humanity.

The Tairns has noticeably shrunk by the time you reach Detson, with creeks and streams and other tributaries slowly subtracted on your way north. Vessels are quite absent from it...with the war on, you suppose that makes sense.

Detson looms ahead of you, nestled high in the upper foothills of the Steelback mountains. The mining city is like a nest of dark towers. You can see one of the duke's three remaining airships floating in the air above the towers, patrolling a lazy circle.

You reach the next marker several miles from the city, on the road. It points you northeast...

"Well," Flint says. "I'd like a comfy bed, but we don't know how much ground we've made up, and we were already several days behind. We should probably keep moving."

"No argument," Auriel says.

Joey doesn't say anything. He's been looking very droopy, lately. After the first night, Flint has been drilling him in swordplay with sticks every single day before they fall to sleep.

<Indeed. Let us continue.>

Another two days pass...

...and you arrive at the edge of Tarun Gakth.

The sheer plateau of the unnatural rock rises from the plain like the stratified bones of the earth.

"Can you sense the next sigil?" Auriel asks. "They probably just went around the edge."

<...yes. Here.> You press into the ground. Adavan's spell reacts to your presence...

The triangle turns, rotates, and points directly into the canyons of Tarun Gakth.

Silence.

"...no," Auriel says. "This is it. This is the part where he throws us off on a wild goose chase. We go around."

<If you're wrong?>

"I won't be, if he truly is the man...or the thing, I should say...that I remember."

Flint looks uncertain. "I don't know what to think. Tarun Gakth is not...a friendly place."

Auriel sighs. "It's obvious, Donovan. Plain as day. He's either running into the Great Forest, or straight to the Black Lady."

<He doesn't know about the Black Lady,> you say. <He just woke up from a 7-century nap.>

"Unless he can dreamwalk, in which case, he absolutely knows."

What do you do?

I'd suggest we go through either way, as even if his intention IS to betray us, it is better we find it out by way of this potential trap rather than in a direct confrontation with him where Abigail (or any relevant others) might come to harm.

<You forget that I could easily fly over it,> you say. <I could carry you.>

<...the horses, we might have to leave behind. I can carry the saddlebags.>

Auriel folds her arms. "What happens when you inevitably get tired and we're forced to land inside that place? You've no idea what's in there, do you?"

<No.>

"Wild orc clans. Wyrms that burrow through the earth. Mad machines of the dwarves, running amok. Criminals and outcasts and exiles from every nation seeking refuge. And the place is littered with openings into the Timorian Deep, which is even worse. The ability to fly would just make you exposed. We'd be infinitely safer on foot - if you can call it safe. Besides, I'm not about to trust you with me 1000 feet in the air, even if I could slow the fall."

"...she's right, Shadow," Flint says. "Flying over it is a bad idea. Maybe if it was you alone, but not with all of us."

Well. What do you do now?

2. For 700 years she never once had an introspective moment where she went "gee, I wonder if maybe hating what I do means I should look for alternative ways of doing it".
3. If she DID the above, then she clearly never found an alternative way of doing things, and isn't that stupid.

She's a liberal who believes in gun control. That's what she reminds me of, anyway,

"I'm more serious than this naive piece of black fluff we're trailing around."

"That's enough!" Flint shouts.

Auriel looks taken aback. "...what's wrong?"

"What's wrong?" Flint says. "What's wrong is that you're trapped in thinking that caused a war so great it made THAT!" Flint jabs a gauntleted finger at the cliffs of Tarun Gakth.

"Donovan, I'm beginning to suspect that you actually trust this thing with your life. You should know better." Auriel folds her arms and cocks her head. "This is why I can't let you alone. It's rather endearing, really. But I - "

Yeah, no. That's all your conjecture and your ignoring that her actions are the societal norm. How long did slavery go on for in America before it was opposed? It was very ingrained into our society at one point; do you not know of the three-fourths act?

The only thing that would redeem her in your mind is if she was the one person who led a social revolution of her people and that is asking way too fucking much. You're problem is with a society not a person.

That's sort of what we're doing. Getting her to stop thinking in black and white. If an angel who actually fought in the war can change, then it's proof that everyone else can as well, and that can be the catalyst for the new world.

The issue here is that you threatening to consume her every five minutes does not help matters in the slightest and is becoming irritating, when it's clear that the majority does not favour that option.

In the elementomachy, it was on a huge scale because of the magic. But those conflicts have never ended. They've kept going, and you've helped keep them going because of your close-mindedness. What needs to change isn't the magic in the world - it's US. People need to change. Society itself need to change. If we're too irresponsible to handle the kind of power we toss around every day, maybe we should take a second look at ourselves and learn some goddamn discipline!"

By the time Flint has had his say, his light is flaring brightly enough to make you shrink back. The parasite rattles and twists, and slowly shunts it back.

"...so...that is how you feel," Auriel states.

Flint tries to say something else, but the creature latched to his soul steals the words.

"No more words for me, Flint?" Her voice cracks. "Please. Tell me more about how I've been wrong and killed people for the hell of it."

"T-that's not...I don't..." Flint can't find his voice.

<The parasite is stunting his speech,> you say. <Flint. Calm down. Say what you need to say.>

He can't force the words out.

"Yes," Auriel says. "I'm sure. Because he had such a hard time with his --speech- just earlier."

She guides her horse a distance away and stares at the canyons. Flint bites his lip. He works his reigns in his hands. But he does not move.

Slowly, you make camp for the night.

>>
>>24689825
Namefags are generally the most obnoxious people in a quest, this has always been the case.

It's not the namefags who're the problem, it's the Anons being assholes when they say something who are the real problem.

Where have I threatened to consume her?

I don't like her. I don't like her at all. I think that it's reasonable - she tried to kill us, then tried to kill us again, and now won't stop being a snarky ivory tower patronizing slunt about the whole thing. I think not liking her is a reasonable state to be in.

But I do acknowledge that "you lot", perhaps blinded by the desire to convert her so we can add more members to our party, or perhaps swayed by Flint's affections, but for whatever reason, want to keep her around. So when we've actually been talking TO her and not ABOUT her I've done my best to keep my suggestions in the realm of "things to ask her" not "insults to hurl at her". Don't be surprised though if you all start talking about her and I tell you I don't like her at all. Because I don't.

I also don't see any need to prove she can change or not. She can change. Everyone can change. We could snap right now and kill everyone around us. There's no point to this little experiment, but you're all set on it so I'm going along with it.

>>24689684
The only thing that would redeem her in my mind is if she entirely stopped being wrong. I think that accepting anything less than that and considering someone "redeemed" is wrong.

I don't expect her to lead a social revolution. I expect her to think things through and come to the logical conclusion.
>>
>>24689861

<The parasite chooses when to rob his words Auriel. And it is malicious. The mayor wanted to burn Abigail at the stake... and it prevented him from from convincing the villagers with words. Again and again things like that happen. It chooses the worst moments for him to stumble, over his feet, or his words. It does its best to destroy him. But subtly. I do not know why or how but that is why it MUST be removed. And that is why we must head into the gorge. And you cannot deny its existence. Not after the battle with the demon lord. His magic then was awe inspiring I'm sure you agree..>

Namefags cause problems, because they are cunts and people know who to hate and who to direct their hate at and can't resist flinging shit.
Namefriends don't because obviously people don't hate them, but why can't they just remain anonymous? All they do is give a thread potential to be shit-up.

I namefag (now tripfag, see above and probably below because the ride never ends) because I don't want SM to think the all my posts are different people building a false consensus. It also helps people know what my platform is when we argue if they know that previously I have stated that X and so it's likely I still state X.

Names do not shit up threads, but a lot of the time they aren't necessary and it annoys me when I see them because they're flirting with danger.
Namefags (fag being operative) shit up threads.

This is nearly the same justification the forces of Light use for their murder and enslavement of Shadow and Spirit magic-users.

We don't need to pay lip service to a greater good. We need to BE the greater good.
>>

It would serve as an excellent distraction for freeing the enslaved magic users...

The Duke could even use his remaining Airships to evacuate civilians while the Angels try to stop the rampaging elemental which their own patron elemental drove insane...

Or we could lead it Towards the city and just let the Angels come out of their city to fight it...

War is never pretty or clean. We can do our best to ensure a favourable outcome, but casualties are to be expected. I mean, there were probably numerous casualties to the Civilian Population during the Demon's siege...

Either way, It's not like Geb is invisible... They should see him miles off and deploy to engage him away from the City itself...

You are all horrible people. We have been given a PRIVILEGE to take part in this quest, this masterpiece, this potential incredible experience. SM has been gracious enough to stay with it for thousands of posts and likely days and days of planning, all for us. And we shit on all that by bickering senselessly and harboring useless hate for people in the quest who actually have genuinely good ideas.

This MUST end. Seriously, just don't even participate if you're going to contribute negatively. Get out, because you're disrespecting the work SM puts into this (which is colossal), and you're disrespecting the anons and names who genuinely enjoy this quest and have been for weeks now.

Can't we discuss things like hypotheses about Port Vanta, the Black Lady's involvement in everything, Ila's significance (if any), or Flint's loyalty and his value? Can we discuss something constructive for once? I haven't seen this for multiple threads now. Let's get back to being questers and innovators and problem solvers, not childish aggressors.

Please.

No one ever said it was a good idea. I still don't know how we'd free him in the first place.
>>
>>24691156
pls keep up with the thread pls, we stahpd talking about names and anons
>>
>>24691156
We're already doing that and you just brought the whole issue back up. I appreciate your intent and completely agree with you but you couldn't have picked worse timing.
>>
>>24691156
Nice try.
>>
>>24691156
We have been given a PRIVILEGE to take part in this quest, this masterpiece, this potential incredible experience. SM has been gracious enough to stay with it for thousands of posts and likely days and days of planning, all for us.

That's the kind of thinking that turns QMs into egotistical cunts.
>>
>>24691182
I typed too slowly. It's nice to see that everyone stopped being fools though...
>>
>>24691156
Dude. You are on fucking 4chan. We're all horrible people here. We're (probably) nice people in real life but in a completely anonymous setting, this is what you get.
>>
>>24690869
More likely the parasite will cause a "whoops wrong hole" moment or premature
>>
>>24691156
>Putting in random capitalized words so someone will think you're MrTT and start arguing again.

Oh you, we've moved on to terrible ideas involving Geb now.
>>
>>24691212
I-it's not like I didn't want anal, baka!
>>
>>24691156
No, because Anons tend to think I'm trolling when I start dispassionately describing supporting characters as resources to be used either refined into better tools or discarded once their purpose has been served. Not worth that set of arguments, at lets this stuff has mostly been in good fun.
>>
>>24691156
Nice speech, a little late...
>>
>Geb
Only way we can reach him is if we find/resurrect the dwarves and get them to make peace with the elves and come united before him.
>>
>>24691212
Well Auriel IS an ancient Angel with several centuries experience of having a stick up her ass, so maybe she's into that.
>>
>>24691212
I think she might like that first one.
>>
>>24691215
They weren't random. And I think getting a mad Earth Elemental to do what we want is pretty unlikely but could be fun.
>>

How's your blood pressure doing pls? I'm starting to worry.
>>

blood pressure too high without good reading material, thank you for asking though pls
>>
>>24690966
I'm sure Sandalphon would heartily agree.
>>
>>24691291
Given how good the parasite is at fucking with Flint, he'll probably end up missing so badly it ends up in her nose.
>>
>Implying that Auriel isn't A MAN
>>
>>24691291
>implying he'll get the chance
I've got a feeling we'll finally manage to convince Auriel to stop being such a bitch, only to have Adavan casually kill her the moment we meet up.
>>
>>24691311
Oh that would be too good.
>>
>>24691143
An insane force of geological destruction, bending and tearing the landscape all around it as it travels, shoring up canyons, rending apart mountains, and opening deep chasms from which magma bubbles. Screaming with the sound of breaking earth, amplified a thousand times into a shattering screech that pierces to the heart.

It does not taunt. It does not laugh. It does not bargain for surrender. It merely destroys, screaming all the while.
>>
>>24691325
And when it destroys the Ring City it can scream YOU DID THIS.
>>
>>24691243
Except there's already an immovable rod wedged up there.
>>
>>24691371
Then that rod will go up Flint's urethra.
>>
Sorry I'm late,

I was too busy laughing my ass off at the last hour of posts.

And a grand old time was had by all.

Page 7 is risking it for another ~2 hours, which is what I have planned. Next post is new thread.

Alrighty...what the fuck was I thinking before I left...

Link to posts you want me to take a look at.
>>
>>24691378
thank you please based SM is back pls praise the shadow

Do that one that had a ton of replies.

If only...

But, as always nonsense diplomacy rolls will let /tg/ do the impossible and reconcile these two ancient enemies, even if doing so breaks immersion and character consistency. Besides, odds are that Auriel gets taken out by her own side to cover up the fact that she lost her angelic powers.
>>
>>24691378

I don't think anything of value occurred. Mainly just the discussion of the repercussions of unleashing Geb upon the Ringed City...
>>
>>24689900
this was my suggestion, it was supported by a few people. Including several MrTTs.

Though you might want to clean it up a bit... I have horrible grammer.

Rolling for diplomacy is not a bad thing. I don't like it, but it has its place.
>>
>>24691489
Never claimed that. Just that diplomacy always seems to work out in these games, which can be a bit annoying when it doesn't make sense. Everything else was wild speculation.
>>
>>24691539
Not quite. Remember our first meeting with Auriel?

And that was when the 1ocalypse started to form...
>>
>>24691539
We failed pretty bad when trying to convince Auriel after our fight with Mr. TriggerHappy McBloodLust
>>
Did someone archive this yet?
>>
>>24691539
Yeah, for some reason /tg/ quests are prone to being diplomacy the movie the game.

I think that sometimes diplomacy failing due to no fault of your own has a place. Not always, or even often, but it does. In fact it happened nicely earlier in this quest.
>>
>>24691569
Yup.
>>
>>24691570
Having the QM determine "receptivity" to an argument behind the scenes is reasonable; some people are more amenable to reasoned or impassioned argument than others. However, having *players* roll diplomacy rather than just taking their roleplaying into account seems almost universally bad.
>>
>>24691593
I think if the QM takes the roleplaying into account by modifying the DC, it works out better.
>>
>>24691593
The idea of rolling is to add randomness into it. I imagine our nat-1 in-world was us accidentally talking about exactly the way Auriel's parent's died or something, automatically throwing anything else we said out the window because she just completely walled up.

Also, because /tg/ has the brainpower of like 20 people and are generally good writers, and we usually select the best example, our roleplaying will always be good, and we just end up becoming boring diplomancers.

>>24691619
This is best system.

New Thread

>>
>>24691593
Oh god, we're not having THIS argument in a Shadow Quest thread. But let me just say what you've probably heard every time you've brought this up on /tg/: that requires the person roleplaying to be just as charismatic and diplomatic as the character their pretending to be. That is not someone everyone is capable of doing. Presenting an argument or giving a general idea of what you want to do to discuss is something to be done but you should never force a person to rely solely on the ability to be as good as their fantasy.
>>
>>24691634
>Also, because /tg/ has the brainpower of like 20 people and are generally good writers, and we usually select the best example, our roleplaying will always be good, and we just end up becoming boring diplomancers.

That's one of the reasons I enjoy questing so much.

>>24691619
Agreed; however, that's something that can be done behind the screen. Turning it into a player roll just makes the talk feel meaningless.
