The sun beams warmly on you as you run, laughing, through a grassy field, chasing after a little girl about your age in a simple dress. Closing the distance, you touch her on the back and turn to run away, your roles in the game now switched.

Wildflowers bloom, studding the field with vibrant colors. Their fragrant scent wafts over the field, mingling with the scent of sunlit grass and recently-faded rain as you and the girl play.

The flowers grow, coming first to your knees, then to eye level, then taller still, like sunflowers, towering over your low vantage point.

You continue your game with the girl unperturbed, weaving through the stalks.

The flowers twine together, fusing to become trees. First saplings, then full-size trees, covered with colorful blossoms. A bird warbles cheerfully in the distance. Bees and butterflies dance among the blooms, and you frolic together with the girl in the shade of the trees.

The flowers curl in upon themselves and become fruits. The fruits ripen and swell as the sun begins to set, casting the world in golden hues. You sit with the girl under a tree, resting from your game.
>>
>>24629614
The fruits grow ever bigger, first as big as apples, then grapefruits, then watermelons, and bigger still. The boughs bend low under their weight. As evening fades to twilight, the fruits fall from the branches, breaking open with wet cracks as they strike the ground. From within the fractured hulls of the fallen fruit rise shadowy figures -- grotesque man-shapes, chattering harsh gibberish.

The goblins circle in on you. The girl clings to your back, hiding between you and the tree trunk. Though trembling with fear yourself, you spread your arms in defiance.

The goblins press in, lashing out with clawed hands. You try to fend them off, but it's no use -- you're not much bigger than they are, and you're far outnumbered. They knock you off your feet, pushing you aside. As you fall, you bite your tongue.

You taste blood.

The goblins gather around the girl. They strike her, eliciting a shrill shriek of terror.

You see blood on the girl's arm, trickling from claw wounds.

You taste blood.

The girl's blood drips onto the ground, bright crimson in a world otherwise drained of color by the dimness of dusk.

You taste blood.

Planting your hand to lift yourself to your feet, you feel it rest on a sturdy stick.

The goblins strike the girl again, drawing more blood.

((Taste their blood))
>>
Clarity washes over you. Clarity of vision. Clarity of purpose. Like the lifting of a veil.

((I shall taste their blood))

You grip the stick tightly in your small fist and rise to your feet.

((Let us dance))

You charge at the goblins, striking one with your stick. The wood impacts with a satisfying crack, and the goblin staggers.

((Come, reveal to me your treasure))

You strike again, harder. The goblin falls.

((Spill it forth))

Another blow falls. And another. And another. The stick comes away slightly wet and glistening.
The goblin stops moving.

((I have glimpsed your heart's treasure))

Another goblin lunges at you.

((You shall not have mine))

You sidestep and strike.

((Strike deep))

You strike again.

((Strike true))

You beat and beat and beat the goblin until it struggles no more.

((Break away the shell))

Another goblin comes. Your stick fractures slightly against its skull.

((Reveal the treasure))

Another blow. Your stick cracks sharply, part of its length flying off.

((Take it))

You leap upon the goblin, gouging with the jagged end of your broken cudgel.

((Taste it))
>>
Your weapon breaks skin, and ichor oozes forth. Not bright crimson.

((What is this?))

Dark. Foul-smelling.

((A tainted vintage))

Disgusted, you strike again, and again, until the goblin stops moving.

((Disappointing))

More enemies, more fighting.

((Which of you has a treasure worth finding?))

More bodies. You are a whirlwind of death in the dusk.

((All foul, all worthless))

One remains.

((The gold among the dross?))

Your stick is splintered beyond usefulness or recognition. You discard it, wiping the foul ichor on your pants as you step toward the final foe.

((Is your treasure worth tasting?))

The foe shrinks away from you. You leap upon it, grasping it by the neck of its dress.

((Come, show me))

You raise your fist. The foe looks at you with fearful, panicked eyes.

((Let me see it))

You strike. The foe shrieks pitifully.

((Let me taste it))

You strike again. Blood trickles from her nose, vibrant scarlet to match the ribbons in her hair.

((There it is!))

You strike a third time, drawing more blood. The foe whimpers, looking up at you with mournful eyes.
She speaks, in a plaintive voice, "Producer?"

((Sweet ambrosia!))

"Producer?"
>>
You jolt awake, shivering, drenched with cold sweat.

You're in your bedroll, in the small cavern chamber where you had holed up to rest. Of course you are.

No sun. No field. No flowers or trees. No goblins...or at least, none in your immediate vicinity.

There is a girl, though, leaning over you with a worried look on her face. Not the one from your dream though -- this one's older, more a young woman than a girl. Of course she is. Who would bring a little girl like the one in your dream down into a place like this?

"Producer," Yukiho asks, "are you alright? It looked like you were having a really bad dream."

>[] I fight monsters for a living. Why would I be scared by a silly dream?

You smile at her, hoping you don't look as rattled as you feel. "Yeah, just a bad dream. Don't worry about it, Yukiho."

"O-okay then," she says. "At least it's over now, right?"

"Yep. Nothing to worry about!"

...Or so you tell her, but truth be told you do feel rather worried about it. It's been a long time since you had one of *those* dreams; you'd thought you'd put all that behind you long ago. And if "that" should ever happen to spill over from mere dreams...

You recall a number of prayers and meditations you learned during the time you spent living in monasteries after "that" first happened. Perhaps one of those would help calm you down and make sure nothing more comes of it...

Seems like it'll help the most. I found the thread with brief descriptions of the temple, but I forget if the gods have a detailed description somewhere.
>>
>>24630334

QM,
is there anything more about gods than http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/23073160/#p23075488 ?
>>
>>24630334
>>24630371
Unfortunately, no. Other than what was in that thread, the details on the gods are all in my head. I really ought to get around to writing those up for everyone sometime soon.

As far as the ones specifically mentioned here:

Sister Flame is, of course, the goddess of fire, and by extension also things related to fire like the sun and passionate emotions. Devotees of Sister Flame seek spiritual fulfillment through contemplation of the beauty of fire and its paradoxical nature as both a destructive force and the source of all-important heat and light. Their philosophy tends to emphasize embracing and nurturing one's passions, but also keeping them directed toward proper ends rather than letting them out of control.

The Arbiter is the god of law, order, and authority. Devotees of The Arbiter belive that discipline and regimentation are essential for fulfilling life, and thus tend to live according to strict personal codes and emphasize the importance of governmental authority.

The Hero, as mentioned in the earlier thread, is the god of valor, strength, and protection. Devotees of The Hero emphasize the cosmic struggle between good and evil, the ultimate victory of good in said struggle, the importance of personal courage and sacrifice for the sake of others.
>>
>>24630548
Well, with those descriptions none of those seem particularly worse or better than the others. Guess it really is just a matter of preference.
>>
If anyone hasn't voted yet, I need a tiebreaker between the Orison of the Hearth and the Way of the Hero.
>>
>>24630548
Okay, then I stay by >>24630235

We'll go with that then.
>>
>>24630548

Wouldn't Arbiter be the most useful for keeping our emotions straight?

Praying to Sister Flame seems like it'd stoke the emotional flames further so to speak.
>>
>>24630637
> but also keeping them directed toward proper ends rather than letting them out of control.
>>
>>24630646

Point taken. Guess I'll settle for red then.
>>
>>24630637
Basically, as far as views toward emotions go, Sister Flame promotes proper tending of them, as one tends a fire -- something good to have, so long as it's kept within proper bounds.

Brother Frost, on the other hand, promotes complete detachment from the passions -- apatheia in the classic Greek stoic sense, basically.

The Arbiter doesn't actually address emotions per se one way or another, more just the idea of rigorous discipline. As far as The Arbiter is concerned, so long as you don't let your emotions drive you to break the rules, it doesn't matter how passionate or stoic you are.

So like this, then.
>>
>>24630116
Getting out of your bedroll, you ask Yukiho if she could scoot over and let you get at the candle for a little bit.

"I just gotta unwind a bit so I can get back to sleep easier."

Kneeling before the candle, you cut a short piece of twine and soak it in some oil from your lantern. You light the twine from the candle flame and lay it down on the stone before the candle. In hushed tones, you pary the Orison of the Hearth:

"Fire is Life-Giver, source of warmth and light. By the grace of Sister Flame, may we never be without it, lest we be struck blind by darkness and die shivering in the cold. Likewise shall I never douse my passions, the fire of my heart, for it is their heat that gives true life to my soul. Rather shall I tend them with care, ever stoking the hearth within my heart.

Fire is Life-Taker, source of destruction and death. May Sister Flame, in her passionate love for us, never let it run rampant, lest we be burnt to cinders. Likewise shall I ever keep my passions with care, lest by their excess I destroy myself and all I love. Rather shall I restrain and guide them, never allowing them to spill forth from the hearth within my heart.

Fire is Purificator, rendering precious metal from the dross. May Sister Flame burn away the impurities of my soul, purging me of all corruption by the heat of the hearth within my heart."
>>
>>24631088
As you finish your prayer and return to your bedroll, Yukiho remarks, "Producer, I didn't know you followed Sister Flame."

"Well, it's not like I worship her exclusively or anything, but I suppose she is one I tend to go to more often than most. Her and The Hero, mostly, I'd say."

"I-I see."

>[] "Do you have any particular gods you tend to pray to, Yukiho?"
>[] "Well, anyway, sorry to worry you with my nightmare. Good night, Yukiho."
>[] Other (specify)

>Note that in this setting's culture, religion isn't quite as deeply personal and private as it is in most modern societies in the real world. There's nothing particularly rude or personal in inquiring about someone's preferred worship habits, since everyone generally acknowledges all the major gods in the pantheon -- it's just a matter of personal favorites.

"Do you have any particular gods you tend to pray to, Yukiho?"

"M-me? W-well, I really like the Artist too. L-like, um, I really think the idea of art as worship, a-and, um, a central part of what life is about makes sense. Especially poetry." She holds up the small book of poems she's been reading.

"Hm. I would've figured you'd like the Vagabond, given the way you love digging holes. Y'know, since he's the god of earth and all."

"W-well, yeah, that's true. He's probably second after the Artist, I guess?
I also kind of like Sister Flame, b-but Father always says it wouldn't be proper for a woman of the Hagiwara family to follow her. H-he says Sister Flame encourages licentiousness and undignified conduct. So I've never really studied her teachings much or anything."

"So your dad's pretty strict, huh? But he lets you be an adventurer?"

"W-well, I had to work really hard to convince him. And he still doesn't really like it."

"Well, let's hope he doesn't change his mind! It'd be a real shame for 765Pro to lose such a great earth mage!"

Yukiho blushes and holds her poetry book a bit higher as if to hide behind it. "O-oh, I'm not that good. I-I'm sure you'd be just fine w-without me..."

"You really ought to quit being so hard on yourself, Yukiho. You're really quite talented -- if anything, the only thing you lack is confidence!"

"Y-you think so?"

"Definitely. Anyway, I should get back to sleep. Got a big day ahead of us!"

"G-goodnight, Producer!"

"G'night."
>>
>>24631686
Your nerves considerably calmed between the prayer and the quick chat with Yukiho, it doesn't take you long to fall back to sleep.

--------------------------------

You wake to the prodding of a finger against your cheek. Opening your eyes, you see Ami and Mami looking down at you, grinning.

"Ah! Nii-chan's up!", Mami cries, finger still jammed against your face.
"How many was that?", Ami asks.
"Eleven times!"

You see Miki, Haruka, and Yukiho behind them, struggling to stifle giggles. Sitting up, you rub the sleep from your eyes...and find a smear of charcoal on one hand when you're done. Popping your sword a few inches from its sheathe, you check your reflection on the blade and see doodles drawn all over your face with charcoal.

>Your response?

>>
>>24631822
"Hm..." You put on a show of pondering your reflection for a moment. "It's a nice idea, but I don't think it quite goes with my eyes," you remark as you push your sword back into its sheathe and wipe your face clean. "Looks like everybody's up, so let's eat a little breakfast, pack up, and get going!"

The trail rations are rather bland and disappointing after last night's home-baked bread and honey cakes, but at least they fill your belly. As you eat, you check up on Haruka to see how she's recovering from yesterday's injuries.

"Mm...I'm just a little bit tired still, but I should be fine!"

Once you've eaten and gotten everything packed up, you ask Yukiho to do another scan of the cavern layout with her magic to make sure you're on the right track to get to the odd room she noticed yesterday. It turns out you did in fact make a wrong turn at the three-way fork, and you'll need to backtrack a bit.

Quieting Yukiho's fervent apologies, you dig out the pages of the profiles Kotori wrote up to introduce you to the members of the guild.

"Ami, Mami, give me some of that charcoal. Yukiho, can you keep that spell up long enough to tell me exactly which route to take at each fork we'll get to?"

"Y-yeah, I think so."

Using the charcoal, you write the directions Yukiho tells you in the extra space at the bottom of the last page of the profiles. Then, you finally have Yukiho open up the tunnel and head out into the caverns.

You head out into the caverns, working your way along the directions you'd recorded from Yukiho's spell. You have a couple run-ins with goblin scouting parties, and one more sizable guard patrol, but take them down with little difficulty. Your party takes a few minor scrapes and bruises, but nothing serious.

By the time you break for a quick lunch, you seem to have made it about halfway to your goal, judging by the number of forks left on your list of directions. Assuming it takes you about as long to get there as it did to get this far, you shouldn't have to worry about running out of oil. You have about 2 hours' worth left in the lantern, and 3 flasks left for refilling. You should only need to use 2 of them to make it to the end.

Finishing your lunch, you press onward toward your goal.

Over the course of the next few hours, you make steady progress through the caverns, coming across a few more patrols and a couple of traps, but still managing them without too much difficulty.

About halfway through the first of your three remaining flasks of oil, you notice the tunnel opening out into what looks like a fairly large chamber. You also notice the floor ahead isn't bare stone; judging by the smell, the chamber seems to be carpeted in a deep layer of guano. Calling for a halt, you crane your neck to see the ceiling as best you can from your still somewhat-distant vantage point. You see what looks to be a flock of bats roosting on the ceiling, along with a few rather large shapes, much bigger than any bat you've ever seen. Perhaps goblins or kobolds clinging to the ceiling somehow...but then if that were the case, wouldn't they disturb the bats? Certainly the only other things you can think of that might be about that size on a cave ceiling are predators that bats certainly wouldn't roost peacefully around -- spiders, slimes, and so forth.

You don't rightly know what those might be...and in a dungeon scenario, it's always best to assume that what you don't know can and will kill you.

"What is it, Producer?" Haruka asks.

"Bats," you reply. "All that on the floor up there is guano, and I can see them on the ceiling. But there's also something else up there with the bats. Something much bigger."

"So...giant bats?", Ami asks.
>>
>>24633817

>Drop Bats

Yukiho, think you can tunnel through to the the next passageway?
>>
>>24633817
"I guess," you reply. "As far as I know, there's not really any such thing, at least not in normal dungeon fauna. Giant bats do exist, but they don't tend to be this deep in caves -- in fact, they rarely live in caves at all, they're forest creatures. Probably because they don't fit easily in most caves, I'd imagine. I suppose that would be the best guess to work on, but we should be prepared for anything."

Taking nearly an hour to update seems to have driven a couple of people off.
>>
Rolled 8

Fuck I nodded off

Here, a roll
>>
Rolled 9

>>24634078
>>24634108
maybe combine these and have twin illusions throw the explosives flames?
>>
Rolled 17

Fuck it.
>>
>>24634424
OKAY YEAH LET'S NOT FUCK WITH FIREJARS TODAY GUYS
>>
>>24634424
Every time.

Thanks for the laugh.
>>
>>24634347
Or have the bottle(s) be made to look like a person. My concern with the fire approach is everything seems to be on the ceiling and not in fire range, and it takes a bit away from any surprise we may have.
>>
>>24634424
Should we use a reroll in this case?
>>
>>24634474
Nothing's happened yet. Let's save our one reroll for when we're actually in deep shit.

>>
>>24634474
Probably not a bad idea think we may be nearing the end of this session. Then again >>24634487 has a point.
I abstain from a vote on the matter for now.
>>
>>24634487
Just a suggestion. So which method are we going for?

>>24634078
>>24634108
Either or both of these seem to be alright.
>>
>>24634474
>>24634487
yeah flaming floor and bats dont seem that bad
>>
>>24634500

Ok, I laughed.
>>
>>24634500
QM, you card.
>>
>>24634503
I'm voting on >>24634108.

Illusions don't die. Or turn an entire fucking room into a firestorm that could backfire horribly.
>>
>>24634547
Fair enough. Let's have the illusions test the waters.
>>
>>24634424
I propose for the next quest we form team justice with Makoto, Chihaya, and Yayoi, and if needed Iori. Bet our rolls never go into double digits.
>>
>>24634577
We should be taking Iori to our next quest as she, Chihaya and Yayoi are the only idols left that we have not gone questing with.
>>
>>24634500

QM, a suggestion. Why don't you use pastebin for the profiles/inventory in the first post?

Would be easier to update and view.

"The most important thing is to get a clear view of the 'giant bats'. Ami, Mami, can you draw them out with an illusion? Maybe something of you two running in and causing a ruckus?"

The two snap you a salute, then turn to face the chamber ahead. They clasp hands together and each extend one arm down the tunnel, palms outward. You get the impression they're posing more for show than anything.

In a moment, you see translucent doppelgangers of the twins appear, as if stepping out of their bodies, and prance into the chamber ahead. They start running and jumping around, yelling insults at the creatures above.

"Hey ugly!"
"Come down and play!"
"Yeah, let's play!"

You hear rustling from the celing of the chamber ahead, along with chittering and a rather unnerving wet, rumbling growl. Then several shapes drop down into view, impacting on the guano-covered floor with a squelching thud. One lands directly on top of the illusory twins, which evaporate at the contact. The creature swivels its head around, trying to find where they went, then fixes its gaze down the tunnel at you.

Illuminated by the light of your lantern, you see that it is essentially a giant bat...but it's the ugliest giant bat you've ever seen. Roughly the size of a mastiff, it stands on the ground propped up on remarkably strong-looking wings tipped with wicked claws. Its face is grotesquely distorted, even for a bat, its mouth hanging agape, probably physically incapable of closing all the way judging by the looks of the mess of jagged fangs jutting out. One eye is sealed shut, covered in bulbous, oozing pustules; the other is tremendously oversized, bulging and bloodshot, darting around frenetically. Behind it, you see a long tail thrashing about, tipped with a wicked-looking barb.

This is no mere giant bat. And whatever it is, there are at least 3 more of its kind in there, if you counted the thuds of their landing correctly.

The freakish bat-thing lets out an unearthly shriek, its fur standing on end, and the guano beneath it churns with the writhing of countless squirming worms.

Pack it up guys.

Well, we're about to be teared a new one.

Is it correct to assume they're particularly blind? Would be kind of useful.

And that's it for tonight's session. It seems we've already lost half the players to sleep or thinking that I fell asleep (which, honestly, is half-true), and it's about that time anyway.

As usual, feedback is much appreciated, and I'm happy to answer any questions.

>>24634638
I have a really bad habit of basically forgetting that pastebin is a thing that exists. I probably should do that from now on.
Though I think putting it all in one pastebin might be a bit much. Maybe just have the inventory linked in the OP with links in the inventory pastebin to a separate pastebin (or pastebins?) for the profiles and glossary and such, since the inventory is the only thing that'll really change from session to session?
>>
>>24635120

Seperate for each is good.
>>
>>24635120
Quite good this evening. Kind of hoping we pick up the pace a tad but it's understandable. Excited about what's going to happen next though.

ETA on the next session?
>>
>>24635149
I should be good to run the next session sometime next weekend, though I can't say for sure yet which day.

I do apologize for the slow posting tonight; I was distracted trying to also watch the Iori stream in another window, plus the fatigue set in a bit earlier than usual tonight. Probably because of the considerable sleep deficit I ran this week.

As for the pacing story-wise, I am trying to streamline wrapping up this arc. I'm thinking next session should see us to the end of this dungeon (though the final boss fight may spill over into the following session).
>>
>>24635279

>Iori stream

What.

Why you no share?
>>
>>24635304
It was posted in the /@/ thread, I figured anyone who would've been interested would've caught it there.

Don't like going to /a/...

Is it still up?
>>
>>24635279
It was good tonight. Rest well!
>>
>>24635394
Yep, looks like it is. It's on Twitch, Verty00.
>>
>>24635279
Good to hear. Just do what you can. Only saying that it might be best to wrap up this particular quest soon. Thank you as always and hope you catch up on your sleep.
>>
>>24635279

I kinda like it. Shows exactly what a step up it is from the previous quests we took.

Get some rest, mate. See you soon.
